If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“I wish society would talk more about, and value, down time. There is so much conversation about the hustle culture, and getting ahead, and doing more etc.” ______Donna McGeorge makes work work. As Australia's most sought-after productivity expert, she is passionate about enhancing the time we spend at work to ensure it is effective, productive, and enjoyable. For over 20 years Donna has worked with managers and leaders throughout Australia and Asia-Pacific for an impressive list of clients. Donna is the author of several books and her latest, The 1 Day Refund is the third in a productivity series, joining The 25 Minute Meeting and The First 2 Hours. The 1 Day Refund demystifies the science behind productivity, using Donna's decades of experience to share practical strategies to create 15% more capacity in your life - equivalent to getting back - one day per week. Love the sound of that! Inspired by the recent lockdowns, Donna realised that many people, particularly those in corporate careers, were spending their usual commute time answering emails and catching up on work, instead of spending the time with family or working towards personal goals. With The 1 Day Refund, Donna aims to help people live better lives through creating more thinking, breathing, living, and working space. “My mission is to help people create a life by design,” says Donna. “People tell me all the time that they feel out of control or overwhelmed and are worried about failing at the most important things. We need to get out of this vicious cycle and into a more positive one.” “When it comes to finding our refund, we need to look at both our mental and our physical capacity – our brain space and our living space. And we need to find balance in both our professional and our personal lives in order to access more capacity.Donna is straight-talking and practical - my kinda gal so I was really looking forward to picking her brain on some top tips to help make me a little more productive in my life so I can do more of the things I desire. As a business owner, EOS® Implementer (business coach), Peer Group Facilitator with Twelve Mavens, published author, sought-after speaker and workshop facilitator, and active community volunteer, Emily has developed a passion for helping clients, friends and colleagues get more of what they want from life. As an entrepreneur and business owner, Emily and her two partners have been experimenting with new business models for the furniture industry since 2014. While running their 35-year office furniture dealership, they developed their first start-up Swivelfly, a service that provides modern furniture to companies on a monthly subscription basis. More recently, they have fully morphed the tired, outdated furniture dealer model, into Magnus, shaped on the direct-to-consumer industry framework, supplying in-stock, fast-turn furniture at a 30% savings. Early in her ownership journey, Emily realized that their team needed a vision and plan to bring high-impact results. She found the perfect set of simple, effective tools and principles in the Entrepreneurial Operating System® (EOS) back in 2015. With these tools and practices, she and her leadership team aligned around their vision, executing to that common vision with discipline and accountability. The outcome has been a healthy team that clearly knows where they are going, how to get there and having the ultimate accountability delivering results. This is the magic formula that helped the team run the daily office furniture dealership, alongside developing two start-ups. Emily uses the example of flying a 747 airplane, while changing the model to a Dreamliner.Connect with Emily:LinedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emilyransone/   Email: EFRansone@gmail.com   Website: tractionforgrowth.com    IG: emilyransoneVIP OFFER for  Growth Junkies Unite:  https://growthjunkiesunite.com/vip/FREE EOS 90 Minute Meeting to learn tools for how to run a better business TEXT HOLLY: https://bit.ly/TextHollyJOIN THE CRUSH THE RUSH CLUB: https://www.hollymariehaynes.com/plannerI hope these tips help! Intellectual Property Protection Basics For Small Businesses With Matt Johnston

Build Value By Choice

Matt Johnston is a lawyer and expert in intellectual property law for business. He joins Nana this week on Build Value By Choice to tell you the differences between the types of intellectual property, what they cover, and how you can apply for them. This is really needed information for every small business owner that could save you from disaster. KEY TAKEAWAYS Intellectual property rights are the rights given to persons over the creations of their minds. They usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use of his/her creation for a certain period of time. There are four main types of intellectual property, these are Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, and Trade Secrets. You can look at this as Knowhow, Messaging, Innovation, and Reputation. A patent is a right granted to an inventor by the federal government that permits the inventor to exclude others from making, selling or using the invention for a period of time. The patent system is designed to encourage inventions that are unique and useful to society. A trademark can be any word, phrase, symbol, design, or a combination of these things that identifies your goods or services. It's how customers recognize you in the marketplace and distinguish you from your competitors. The word “trademark” can refer to both trademarks and service marks. A copyright is around the expression of an idea. Many types of works are eligible for copyright protection, for example: Audiovisual works, such as TV shows, movies, and online videos. Sound recordings and musical compositions. Written works, such as lectures, articles, books, and musical compositions. A trade secret could be something like a recipe. It provides an economic or competitive advantage to its owner because the information is not generally known to or available through proper means by another person who can obtain economic value from its disclosure or use. Is subject to reasonable efforts by its owner to maintain its secrecy. BEST MOMENTS ‘About 70 to 80% of any business is intellectual property’ ‘Understand what can be protected, and what can’t be protected’ ‘Because they made it public, they were ineligible for a patent’ EPISODE RESOURCES www.mattthelawyer.com https://www.uspto.gov/learning-and-resources/uspto-videos https://www.copyright.gov/ Reach out to the host at https://linktr.ee/nmbonsu for help on scaling your business. This week Jason Pittman, President and CEO of Exit Advisory joins Nana on Build value By Choice to discuss the newly released BizBuySell insight report ‘Small Business Acquisitions Pick Up in 2021, Beat Pre-Pandemic Levels in 4th Quarter’. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many business brokers surveyed expressed improved market conditions in 2021, with 62% reporting higher transactions than in 2020. Over half (53%) of those attributed growth to a strong demand for businesses that thrived during the pandemic. Forty-six percent (46%) experienced an increase in owners looking to sell, an encouraging stat given the lack of inventory has been the main barrier to market recovery to-date. An equal 46% experienced an increase in buyers as the Great Resignation, SBA aid programs, and low interest rates ignited demand. Over the past year, a record number of workers have left their jobs for a variety of reasons. At the same time, business ownership has been catching entrepreneurs by storm. Over 5 million entrepreneurs applied for business applications in 2021, the largest number ever recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau. At the same time, 21% of business buyers identified as being part of the great resignation and business brokers say 23% of their inquiries came from corporate refugees or newly unemployed seeking ownership. The businesses that are in demand are those in food and beverage services, or those in consumer services like car washes and auto repair. These simpler businesses are more attractive to potential buyers and in some cases have not been as impacted by the recent pandemic. The number one thing that makes a business unsellable is if the owner is the business. Is the owner doing all the work themselves? Having a team in place who will survive a transition is a much more appealing prospect than a business where their best asset is leaving. BEST MOMENTS ‘When you add it up there’s a lot of activity going on. It’s a perfect storm’ ‘There’s a lot of people with cash just looking for the right opportunity’ ‘You need to make sure the business is not too reliant on one individual’ EPISODE RESOURCES Leave a comment or question on the Build Value By Choice Facebook community page Get more resources on infhorizons.com/podcast Know Your Current Valuation: https://bit.ly/get-free-valuation https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonleepittman/ https://www.exit-advisor.com/ Book a 30 Minute Meeting with Nana Bonsu BizBuySell Insight Report Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast and share it. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about MLB and the MLBPA's 90-minute meeting in New York on Tuesday, and how the two sides remain far apart on several major issues with Spring Training report dates looming. In Tuesday's meeting, the MLBPA made slight alterations to its proposals about the pre-arbitration bonus pool and service time manipulation. They lowered the amount they're asking for in the bonus pool from $105 million to $100 million, but importantly, they continue to ask for players to reach arbitration after two years, compared to the three it is now. The league has said that is a non-starter.Ben goes through issue by issue discussing where the league and the players stand, and the separation that exists between them. He discusses arbitration and pre-arbitration pools. He discusses the luxury tax, which is a major point of contention. It has functioned like a soft cap, while its intended purpose was to prevent high-payroll teams from buying success and bulldozing over smaller market teams. It hasn't played out that way, with tons of parity still existing in the sport even among smaller market teams. The league is a very small increase while the players want a big one. Ben also discusses the issues of a draft lottery and service time manipulation. Regarding the draft lottery, the league's warts are clearly showing, as the players' asks are clearly aimed at competitive integrity, and league seems to be fighting against that, which is hard to justify.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

Welcome back to the new school year! After the roller coaster ride of the past school year, school leaders will be bracing themselves for all kinds of challenges this year. However, what still seems to be missing is the ability to reflect: to stand back and consider issues deeply – and to look honestly at themselves as leaders. It isn't surprising that school leaders find this difficult, given the unparalleled changes businesses have faced in recent years.  In today's episode, I take a moment to remind you why you need to schedule 15-minute meetings with yourself in this new school year. A meeting with yourself can be very casual. The main point of the meeting is to set aside enough time to really reevaluate the goals you've set for yourself (and your team) and decide which to keep pursuing and which to move, reevaluate, or terminate altogether. In a nutshell, I talk about: How to focus on the big picture during your personal meetings. Critical questions to consistently ask yourself for a better life. Why you shouldn't talk about your dreams with people whose job is to protect you. How to rewire your brain to become the leader that you've always wanted to be. … and so much more!   Resources and links mentioned in this episode: Ever wish you knew EXACTLY what to say to a Teacher, Parent or Admin Team in a Hard Moment? Each episode will be packed with tools and strategies – equipping you to build schools with higher staff retention, teacher motivation, parent partnership, collaborative culture, and a beautiful quality of life.    Every week, Chanie shares the truth about the journey to excellence, the strategies that are working TODAY, and the mindset about the critical decisions and choices that you make everyday which impact yourself, your teachers, parents, family, and children who you serve everyday.

I want to start off by saying the way most people run meetings is wrong. In fact, that’s the reason most practice owners don’t run meetings at all. If you’re not running any meetings shame on you… but it’s probably because you just don’t know how. For those practices that do, most are disorganised, have no structure or are more just like gossiping and conversing. In this episode we reveal the fast meeting process and structure that will make sure you can jump into action with your meetings quickly and get great results. This is the exact meeting method we use to ensure everyone is on same page and we can address any issues on the spot. It’s time to create an incredibly powerful conversation that increases productivity, creates alignment and a powerful culture. It’s actually not just a meeting structure – but also the way to become a powerful leader, gain respect and buy in from your team. We hope you love this episode!

This episode is going to be short and sweet and you’re going to find out why pretty quickly. One of my favorite shows of all time is The West Wing. I loved the quick pace, the witty banter, the thoughtful approach to complex issues, and the relationships of the characters. They were good people doing their best and occasionally, with good intentions, messing up. There are many things I like about The West Wing but what I want to talk to you about today is something I noticed in the episodes and became very intrigued by. The 5-Minute Meeting Most of the meetings happened in short bursts. Some as short as 1-2 minutes and even in The Situation Room where serious things were going down, people got right to the point so they could fulfill the purpose of the meeting which was to make decisions. Information was given clearly and concisely and if more information was needed the meeting was ended and everyone moved on to do what they needed to do. Otherwise, they made their decisions, everyone had their marching orders and they moved on. Meeting over. On to the next important issue. I was reminded of this recently when I was meeting with a woman who was the head of an organization who was in a tight situation. She needed to have contact or facetime with many different groups but her days were getting eaten with meetings and she had to work longer hours to stay caught up on emails and get her own project work done. I told her about what I’ve labelled “The 5-Minute Meeting” from The West Wing. She was intrigued and we explored what this could look like day-to-day for her. Now this is not to say that all meetings are 5-minutes. That number is as arbitrary and meaningless as a 30, 60, or 90-minute meeting. However, only allowing a meeting to as long as it needs to be prevents “needless expansion” from happening. Why Meetings Go Too Long “Needless expansion” includes, among other things, people starting to come late to meetings because the meeting never start on time anyway. Idle chit chat at the beginning of the meeting that serves no purpose other than put off actually starting the meeting, and people coming to the meeting unprepared because they know there is plenty of time to talk ideas through rather than flesh them out beforehand. Also, included in this is when people feel the need to tell stories, gossip, or give irrelevant opinions to the matter at hand. Then there’s the time when two people have a conversation in the meeting that they could have by themselves after the meeting but choose to have everyone bear witness to it instead. I’ve been victim to this rude behavior and I’ve been the perpetrator as well. There are so many ways a meeting can be hijacked by time wasters and if you’re a people pleaser you probably struggle with how to handle it. Rude behavior isn’t always conscious behavior and that’s why we need other people to kindly bring our attention to it. Not all meetings are time wasters but it’s important to do something about the ones that are. For meetings I know to be time wasters, I’m a big fan of cutting the time for the meeting in half. To make it work you need to let everyone know the timeframe in advance and set some ground rules. The ground rules may include that the meeting will start promptly at the start time, all materials to be discussed need to submitted to all attendees, for example, 24-48 hours in advance of the meeting and everyone needs to be prepared to concisely give their report. Let everyone know how much time they will have to present and hold them to it. Time them if you have to. They’ll learn. Don’t be Afraid to hold people accountable. And how do you end a meeting that is starting to go overtime? If it’s in person you stand up and let everyone know that’s all the time you have. Give assignments, thank everyone for their time, and move toward the door. If it’s via video conference you call the meeting to a halt, give assignments, thank everyone for their time and end the call. Soon enough people will come to realize that your time is valuable and when you say the meeting will be 18 minutes (or however long you set for it) that means it’s up to them to make sure they are prepared going into the meeting and get right to the point. Even if it’s not your meeting you can make requests to have them run a bit differently or say you can only be there for part of the meeting. If you’re someone who hates meetings because they eat up too much of your day start doing what you can to minimize your exposure to this time-waster. Though it might be uncomfortable to do at first, the reward is that you will become more relaxed, more productive, and more effective. Isn’t that worth it? Navigating Change: The Podcast from Teibel Education

We’ve all been there -- the eternal ineffective meeting. The facilitator labors on and on, agenda lost long, long ago, with no end in sight. But it is possible to hold effective meetings; meetings with focus, attention, participation, and accountability -- and it all starts with a collective understanding of the rules of the field. In this episode, Howard Teibel and Pete Wright outline those rules and provide suggestions for all who are plagued with ineffective meeting-itis on how to spark the right team behaviors and get back on track.
