Hey, it's Dave Jackson, and I'm thrilled to bring you episode 1014 of the School of Podcasting. You've heard me say it before: "Podcasts lead to relationships, and those relationships lead to opportunities." Today, I brought proof! I sat down with Kim Newlove and Jan Almasey, who shared amazing stories about how starting a podcast opened doors they never anticipated.Kim Newlove's Story:Kim hosts The Pharmacist Voice, where she shares insights on using your voice in the medical field, as well as the Perrysburg Podcast in Ohio. It's been incredible watching Kim become a mini local celebrity—people in her town now recognize her as "the podcast woman." Whether it's meeting city council members or audience listeners who discovered the area through her podcast, Kim sees firsthand how her show for Perrysburg builds authentic relationships. She even reached out to her local library to run seminars on "how to listen to podcasts," growing her audience one person at a time. You can check out Kim's work at the Pharmacist Voice.Jan Almasey's Journey:Jan started the Apex Podcast after seeing how storytelling could bring hope to his local community in Stark County, Ohio. Over three years, the show picked up momentum, leading to speaking engagements at high schools, partnerships with the local chamber of commerce, and even a sponsorship from the city that helped him set up a podcast studio in downtown Canton. Jan's strategy? Build real relationships—sending thank-you cards or making personal follow-up calls to guests fueled organic growth. Later, those relationships directly translated to business opportunities like agency work, consulting gigs, and even a grant through Jumpstart Inc. to support the local economy. Jan's story proves that podcasting is about more than downloads—it's about building a network that keeps on growing. Learn more at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jan-almasy/My Takeaway:Reflecting on their experiences—and my own—I can't stress enough how starting a podcast can transform your network. Whether you're meeting listeners at local events, helping someone discover how to use a podcast app, or forming business partnerships outside your traditional circles, these relationships turn into possibilities you never would've imagined. Your podcast can be the starting point for new jobs, collaborations, consulting work, or simply making a bigger impact in your community. If you're thinking about starting a podcast or you're on the verge of giving up—let these stories convince you to stick with it. The relationships you build now might lead to the next big opportunity.Ready to plan, launch, or grow your show? Former Special Forces soldier Ant Middleton delivers a shocking exposé on why London is "out of control" and spiralling into a state of "anger and violence" due to the national identity crisis. He reveals why "woke bullshit" has compromised the police, why he is running for Mayor of London, and how he plans to implement "zero tolerance policies" to protect citizens and reclaim the capital as a thriving, tech, economic, safety hub BEST MOMENTS "London and the UK is out of control." "The suppression of one's identity... what does that create? It creates confusion, frustration, anger, and then violence." "If we gave a certain order, all hell would erupt in the UK. The troops are aligned. The armies are behind certain people." Paul Feig #4Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Paul Feig EVEN MORE, on his 4th appearance on the show. In this episode, we don't cover most of what we covered in the past 3 appearances; rather, we discuss some of his super early projects, as well as his current film The Housemaid (in theaters THIS Friday). Along the way, we talk about the first film he directed, while still in film school, and how it almost didn't happen. Then we chat about the passion project that just about bankrupted his family! Obviously, I gush about some of my all-time favorite films; two of which are his, and then we talk about some of his friends and their recent successes. Finally, we get into his newest film The Housemaid. Starring Sidney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, & Elizabeth Perkins; this is Paul's first film back in theaters since Covid. His previous 3 films (The School for Good and Evil, Jackpot, & Another Simple Favor) were all released on streaming platforms. Paul shares his opening weekend habits, and his thoughts on what may very well be his darkest film to date. I absolutely love having Paul on the show and can't thank him enough for his 4th appearance. Everyone should go see this film!
In today's episode, I'm continuing my myth-busting season and tackling one of the biggest beliefs holding designers back: the idea that clients only care about money. If you've ever taken pricing questions personally or felt pressure to lower your rates just to keep projects moving, this conversation is for you. I'm breaking down what's really happening when clients push back on price — and why it's almost never about trying to save a few dollars. In this episode, I talk about: Why clients aren't price shoppers — they're confidence and clarity shoppers How money questions are often a signal of uncertainty, not rejection The real reason designers internalize pricing resistance (and how to stop) What clients are actually buying when they hire a designer Why leadership, process, and clarity matter more than being "competitive" How shifting from price-focused to value-led changes everything in your business At the end of the day, your clients aren't looking for cheap — they're looking for smart. They want to feel safe, supported, and confident that they're making the right decision. When you lead with clarity and step fully into your role as a professional, pricing stops being the problem and starts making sense. If this episode hits home, keep your eyes open for what's coming next. What's the definition of a mission field? It is a place where lost and hopeless people live and work. The public school system is one massive mission field. Some incredible believers are teachers, aids, and administrators throughout the public school system, but we need more. God and the Bible have been weaseled out of every corner of our education system. But take heart: those of you serving in the mission field of the public school system are being prayed for today. Don't give up. The fields are ripe for harvest. More of you are desperately needed there to serve as teachers, aides, school board members, and administrators. So please pray for those serving in this battleground mission field and consider joining them in the fight for the souls of our public school students.
Send us feedback/questions via TextOn this episode, I was joined as always by Jim Collison, and we had the pleasure of welcoming Ralph Estep from AskRalph.com—the Content Creators' Accountant—to dive into recent changes in how the IRS handles tips for content creators. Ralph walked us through the new law allowing up to $25,000 in tip income (like Super Chats, Buy Me a Coffee, etc.) to be excluded from income taxes in 2025, provided you track it properly. We talked about the importance of keeping tip income separate from memberships or other payments where the customer receives something tangible or access in exchange. We also took questions and comments from our live chat about accounting software, prepping for taxes, and even how certain types of Patreon support could possibly qualify as tax-free tip income under this new law (with a big emphasis on always consulting your own accountant!). Whether you're using Super Chats, Patreon, or other support methods, this tax year might look a little different.Sponsors:PodcastBranding.co - They see you before they hear youBasedonastruestorypodcast.com - Comparing Hollywood with History?Video Version (unedited)Mentioned In This EpisodeSchool of Podcastinghttps://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/joinPodpagehttp://www.trypodpage.comHome Gadget Geekshttps://www.homegadgetgeeks.comContent Creator's Accountanthttps://www.contentcreatorsaccountant.com/Podcaster Hall of Famehttps://www.podcasthof.comFeatured Supporters: Jill and Alison from the Keep the Flame Alive Podcast. The podcast for fans of the Olympics and Paralympics at flamealivepod.com Podcast Hot Seat Black Friday DealNot happy with your downloads? At the start of this year's school year, we were hearing reports about more and more schools nationwide that were taking steps to get the smartphones out of their student's hands during the school day. This a great move that every school district should take. But there's still concerns about how much time our kids are spending with their smartphones and social media during their out-of-school hours. Some new research, that's not at all surprising, should push you as a parent to set limits on smartphone use in your home. It seems that social media is effecting test scores. For kids ages nine to thirteen, just one hour on social media per day can lower test scores by at least one or two points. Kids who spent as high as four hours a day on social media saw up to a five point drop on their test scores. Our students should be pursuing a love of the Lord with all of the capacities of their minds. Let's help them do this well by setting clear borders and boundaries on smartphone use.

Poet and essayist Carol Ann Davis (Fairfield University) joins Evan Rosa for a searching conversation on violence, childhood, and the moral discipline of attention in the aftermath of Sandy Hook. Reflecting on trauma, parenting, childhood, poetry, and faith, Davis resists tidy narratives and invites listeners to dwell with grief, healing, beauty, and pain without resolution.“I don't believe life feels like beginnings, middles, and ends.”In this episode, Davis reflects on how lived trauma narrows attention, reshapes language, and unsettles conventional storytelling. Together they discuss poetry as dwelling rather than explanation, childhood and formation amid violence, image versus narrative, moral imagination, and the challenge of staying present to suffering.Episode Highlights“Nothing has happened at Hawley School. Trained first as an artist at the Royal College of Art in London, she later found her way naturally into the healing arts, studying bioenergetic psychotherapy in Spain, dance with Gabrielle Roth, and Shintaido Martial Arts in San Francisco. Her love for classical homeopathy led her to the UK, where she completed her studies at The School of Homeopathic Medicine in North Yorkshire and became a member of both the UK and US Society of Homeopaths. In 1997, she returned to the United States to establish The Institute of Life Energy Medicine, offering classes on homeopathy, soul psychology, and creative healing—courses she taught for 15 years and now makes available online. Her journey has taken her through Europe, Africa, and India, deepening both her spiritual understanding and her healing work. She studied archetypes at the Carl Jung Institute in Switzerland, earned a master's degree in fine arts, and spent many years living in Spain and the UK. Among her most meaningful experiences were her visits to India to learn from her teacher, Sadguru HLW Poonja, who opened her heart to her higher purpose, encouraged her writing, and gave her the name Ambika, meaning “Universal Mother.” Today, she continues to nurture her inner peace through meditation and lives a joyful, grounded life in Tucson, Arizona. From 1 Kings 23 and Luke 19, Pastor Mateo invites us to see how generations of broken and partially faithful kings reveal our deep need for true peace. Together, we discover that peace is not a fleeting feeling but a restored reality found when we trust Jesus, live in His way, and stay connected to our Savior rather than the storm.

SYRACUSE ARTIST WINS INTERNATIONAL ILLUSTRATION CONTEST Upcoming Hollywood Awards Event HOLLYWOOD, CA - Syracuse, Utah artist Tray Streeter is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest earning him a trip to Hollywood for a week-long master-class workshop, an awards event and his illustration will be published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 42. Tray Streeter grew up in Syracuse, Utah. Like many children, he spent much of his childhood drawing, though he was especially interested in still lifes. That fascination with technique deepened in his teenage years after he received a set of oil paints for Christmas, leading him to study the works of John Singer Sargent and Caravaggio. Portraiture became his passion, one that continues to influence his work today. It was not until adulthood, when he began working digitally, that he turned his attention to sci-fi and fantasy art. The genre offered him the freedom to create artworks that exist beyond reality. Influenced by artists like Frank Frazetta and Alex Ross, he aims to combine both the drama and technique of classical painting with the sleek, contemporary possibilities of digital art. Currently, Tray is attending Weber State University, pursuing a BFA in Art with a 2D emphasis. After graduation, he hopes to continue his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Ultimately, he aspires to illustrate for Dungeons & Dragons, work on cover illustration for comics, and develop his own original concepts. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (The Oppenheimer Alternative), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), Hugh Howey (Wool), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 9 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writers of the Future Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was inaugurated five years later. In the 42 years of the Writers of the Future Contest, there have been 571 winners and published finalists. The past winners of the Writing Contest have published 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories. They have produced 36 New York Times bestsellers, and their works have sold over 60 million copies. In the 37 years of the Illustrators of the Future Contest, there have been 418 winners. The past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 6,800 illustrations, 390 comic books, graced 700 books and albums with their art, and visually contributed to 68 television shows and 40 major movies. The Writers of the Future Award is the genre's most prestigious award of its kind and has now become the largest, most successful, and demonstrably most influential vehicle for budding creative talent in the world of speculative fiction. Since its inception, the Writers and Illustrators of the Future contests have produced 41 anthology volumes

What if everything we think we know about AI understanding is wrong? Is compression the key to intelligence? Or is there something more—a leap from memorization to true abstraction? In this fascinating conversation, we sit down with **Professor Yi Ma**—world-renowned expert in deep learning, IEEE/ACM Fellow, and author of the groundbreaking new book *Learning Deep Representations of Data Distributions*. Professor Ma challenges our assumptions about what large language models actually do, reveals why 3D reconstruction isn't the same as understanding, and presents a unified mathematical theory of intelligence built on just two principles: **parsimony** and **self-consistency**.**SPONSOR MESSAGES START**—Prolific - Quality data.
