Hey Heal Squad! If you've ever checked all the boxes of “success” but still felt unsettled on the inside, you need to hear this. On this Throwback Thursday, Maria sits down with Lewis Howes, 3x New York Times bestselling author and host of The School of Greatness, for a conversation about emotional healing, trauma, and what greatness really means. Lewis opens up about the childhood experiences, unresolved pain, and emotional wounds that followed him into adulthood, even as his career, finances, and public success continued to grow…They even unpack why achievement alone can't heal inner pain, how emotional wounds get stored in the body, and the moment Lewis realized he had to stop running from his past and finally face it. He shares the tools that helped him begin healing, and how he learned a specific process completely reshaped his relationships, sense of peace, and definition of success. If you're on a healing journey, navigating emotional triggers, or questioning why “doing everything right” still doesn't feel fulfilling, this episode is a reminder that true greatness starts from within! Minneapolis Public Schools canceled classes on Thursday and Friday out of caution, citing protests sparked by the fatal shooting of a female driver by federal immigration agents. The district will not move to e-learning, as that is only allowable under severe weather conditions. School will resume in the city on Monday, Jan. 12.The Senate is due to consider a resolution on Thursday that would block President Donald Trump from taking further military action against Venezuela without congressional authorization. Senate passage would be a significant victory for the lawmakers who have been pushing the war powers issue. To become law, however, the resolution would have to pass the Republican-led House of Representatives and survive an expected Trump veto, which would require two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override.

In this powerful episode, Laura is joined by Dr. Keisha Bentley-Edwards, Associate Professor at Duke University's School of Medicine and Co-Director of Duke CTSI Center for Research, Community Engagement, Social Impact and Trust (CREST Center), for a timely conversation on rethinking resilience. Inspired by Dr. Bentley-Edwards' article "I Am Not (Your) Superwoman, Black Girl Magic, or Beautiful Struggle: Rethinking the Resilience of Black Women and Girls," this episode explores the cultural narratives that celebrate Black women's strength while often ignoring the profound physical, emotional, and psychological costs of relentless resilience. Together, Laura and Keisha unpack the tensions between pride in endurance, cultural expectations like the "Strong Black Woman," and the growing body of research showing how these narratives contribute to health inequities across the lifespan. Dr. Bentley-Edwards offers insight into how expectations of resilience often begin in childhood for Black girls, shaping adult experiences of stress, coping, and wellbeing. The conversation moves beyond critique toward possibility—imagining models of resilience that center sustainable wellness, community care, and structural accountability, rather than individual endurance alone. Dr. Bentley-Edwards also reflects on what Black women can do in service of themselves and Black girls, and what we must collectively demand from systems, institutions, and leaders. Anchored in Season 8's theme, "Leaning Into Joy," this episode invites listeners to consider how joy, rest, alignment, and community are not indulgences, but essential counterweights to harmful expectations of strength.   About Dr. Keisha Dr. Keisha Bentley-Edwards is an Associate Professor at Duke University's School of Medicine and Co-Director of Duke CTSI Center for Research, Community Engagement, Social Impact and Trust (CREST Center). She is also the Associate Director of Research for the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity. Dr. Bentley-Edwards' research focuses on how racism, gender, and culture influence development throughout the lifespan, especially for African Americans. She is the Chair of the Society for Research in Child Development's Black Caucus. Her research emphasizes cultural strengths, including religiosity, and eliminating structural barriers to support healthy development in communities, families, and students, and in birth outcomes. Her research has been supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, IBM, and the National Institutes of Health. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

Why do kids often act so differently at school than they do at home? In this episode, you'll learn how skills like adaptability and “theory of mind” develop over time, why younger kids struggle more with behavior shifts, and how structure, transitions, and social pressure shape school-day behavior. We explore concepts like afterschool restraint collapse, social battery depletion, and masking—and why post-school meltdowns are usually a good sign, in that your home is a place your kid feels safe. You'll learn some practical strategies for making things easier, including creating afterschool rituals, using visual schedules, feeding kids early and often, collaborating with teachers, and getting curious instead of reactive when behavior changes. Look at just about any materia medica, and you will see the word "anti" in front of many an herbal action. These are subtypes of the antimicrobial action, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, antiviral, antiparasitic, antiamoebic, and antimalarial.    When you see these words, it is easy to assume that the herbs they describe are like natural pharmaceuticals designed to "kill" pathogens. However, that framework can mislead you and sometimes lead to poor clinical choices.    In this article, we'll rethink the entire premise of "anti-herbs" and explore how they really work. Here's what you'll learn: Why the "anti-" framework (antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, etc.) can create an allopathic mindset about herbs That many herbs work by increasing host resistance rather than killing microbes directly Why the "antiviral" label is often misleading — and why there's no such thing as a true broad-spectrum antiviral What scientific Petri dish studies actually tell us (and where the big leaps in logic happen) How the "herbal antibiotic" idea falls short — and whether herbs can disrupt gut flora or drive resistance Why organ affinity and tissue energetics matter more than chasing the pathogen Common pitfalls caused by over-focusing on "killing" instead of restoring balance An introduction to my top 10 broad-spectrum "anti" herbs   ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at:  http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com   Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/   Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ   Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/   Shop our herbal products:  https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/   ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. His mission is to develop a comprehensive approach that balances the science and spirituality of plant medicine, focusing on using plants to heal and rejuvenate the body, clarify the mind, open the heart, and support the development of the soul. This is only achieved through understanding and working with the chemical, energetic, and spiritual properties of the plants. His teachings embody a heartfelt respect, honor and reverence for the vast intelligence of plants in a way that empowers us to look deeper into the nature of our medicines and ourselves. Dr. Kathleen Martin Ginis is a Distinguished University Scholar and a Professor in the Department of Medicine (Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) and in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences at The University of British Columbia. She holds the Reichwald Family Chair in Preventive Medicine and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology, and as is an International Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology. The focus of Dr. Martin Ginis's research is placed on understanding and changing physical activity behaviour, particularly among people living with spinal cord injury. She is deeply committed to knowledge translation; specifically, the development and implementation of evidence-based best-practices to improve health and well-being among people with disabilities. By example, Dr. Martin Ginis spearheaded the formulation and knowledge translation of scientific exercise guidelines for adults with spinal cord injury. These guidelines have been translated into nearly 20 languages and are used worldwide in clinical and community settings. Part 2 Eighty percent admittedly is an arbitrary number, but it's one that most exercise scientists use as a sort of the minimum threshold for deeming someone adherent to the protocol. There were no differences in pain reduction between those with neuropathic versus musculoskeletal pain, but the small ends, small sample sizes for those two groups, make it difficult to really confirm that there is no difference in exercise outcomes for those two groups. She thinks we need to look at that further with bigger samples for each type of pain. Given the pragmatic nature of the trial that we let people exercise on their own in the community, she thinks this speaks to the feasibility of using exercise as a pain self-management strategy, but with the caveat that it's likely not going to be effective for everyone. Fifty percent of people with spinal cord injury report no leisure time physical activity whatsoever. In other words, no activity that could potentially improve cardiorespiratory fitness or muscle strength. And that's not the fault of people with spinal cord injury. Factors that influence physical activity don't just rest within the person, but they rest within society.

Discover the five science-backed reasons you're always tired and what to do about it. From adrenal dysfunction and chronic inflammation to nutritional deficiencies, sunlight exposure, and hormone decline—learn how to identify your fatigue triggers and restore your energy naturally with actionable lab work, lifestyle changes, and targeted supplementation. FEATURED PRODUCT Zen, featuring bovine adrenal gland extracts, is designed to support adrenal function and help regulate cortisol levels—the key hormone controlling your stress response, sleep quality, and daily energy. If you're always tired despite getting enough sleep, Zen provides the targeted adrenal support your body needs to restore balanced cortisol production and reclaim the calm, sustained energy you've been missing. Get zen here: https://mswnutrition.com/products/zen 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS Adrenal dysfunction is the primary cause of chronic fatigue - When stress overactivates your adrenal glands for years, cortisol production becomes imbalanced, disrupting sleep and draining energy even after a full night's rest. Chronic inflammation creates debilitating tiredness - Conditions like insulin resistance, autoimmune disorders, liver issues, and chronic pain keep your body in a constant state of metabolic stress that depletes energy reserves. Nutritional deficiencies directly impact energy production - Deficiencies in B vitamins (especially B6, B9, and B12), choline, and vitamin D impair neurotransmitter production and cellular energy, with genetic factors like MTHFR compounding the problem. Morning sunlight is non-negotiable for energy regulation - Just 10-15 minutes of morning sun exposure produces 10,000 IU of vitamin D, increases serotonin and cortisol naturally, and sets your circadian rhythm for better sleep and daytime energy. Hormone decline accelerates fatigue after age 40 - Low testosterone in men and declining estrogen in women contribute significantly to persistent tiredness, but addressing adrenal health should always come before hormone replacement. JOIN THE SCHOOL Recovering from adrenal fatigue requires more than just breathing exercises and supplements—your diet plays a crucial role in cortisol regulation and energy stability. That's why we're launching a 6-week "No Grains. No Sugar." class starting Thursday, January 15th. Has the shaking of the world left you feeling paralyzed or unsure of how to step forward? Are you looking for a safe harbor in the midst of the "Venezuela events" and global instability? What if the chaos around you is actually an invitation to create an unshakeable sanctuary within you? In this urgent and deeply healing transmission, Michael Sandler shares a powerful nervous system reset designed for right now. Following the recent events that have shaken many to the core, Michael channels Archangel Michael to deliver a message of safety, grounding, and empowerment. This isn't just about surviving the news cycle; it is about finding your footing when the ground feels like it is moving. Michael explains why 2026 is the "Sanctuary Year", how to move from a "lizard brain" reaction to a heart-centered power, and provides specific, real-time energetic clearings to remove the ancestral fears of war and chaos from your field. Key Topics: The "Sanctuary Year": Why Archangel Michael is relabeling 2026 as a year of safety and haven, despite the external "quickening." Turtle Breathing: A specific breathing technique ("Tai Chi" style) to immediately slow down a racing mind and find peace. A powerful grounding method to root yourself into the earth when you feel "spun" by world events. Why asking "How's the weather?" no longer serves us, and the brave question you must ask instead: "How is your soul doing?" The science behind why chanting "OM" can double your cell membrane's water-holding capacity and instantly switch off the fight-or-flight response. The "Bunny" Strategy: Why looking at "cute and fuzzy" things (like Rabbit Island in Japan!) is legitimate medicine for a fried nervous system. This episode is a balm for your spirit. If you have been holding your breath waiting for the next shoe to drop, this message will help you exhale, remember your power, and realize that your calm is not passive; it is powerful. ON THIS EPISODE: Interrogating 'the white possessive.' And according to Indigenous scholar Aileen Moreton-Robinson, countries like Canada, Australia and the U.S. are best understood as 'white possessions'—possessions which take a great deal of work and resources to maintain, a relentless reproduction of "the nation-state's ownership, control and domination" over stolen Indigenous lands and waters. But, of course, the machinations of white possessiveness can also be less overt. Secure in their belief in a colonial status quo, states now promote Indigenous 'inclusion' within socioeconomic systems predicated on their dispossession and disappearance. Gestures at 'collaboration' that are more confabulation, a 'reconciliation' that's really about recuperation. The kind of contradictions discussed extensively at "Sovereignty First: Tackling the White Possessive in an Era of 'Collaboration'"—an October 2024 panel inspired by Moreton-Robinson's insights into whiteness, race and the state—a series of presentations we'll reflect on over the next few episodes. Today is the deadline for candidate filings in the state of Wisconsin. To break down the races in this busy election year, host Dana Pellebon speaks with three powerhouse local journalists, Christina Lieffring, Enjoyiana Nururdin, and Faye Parks.  There was a general sense of surprise and excitement at the number of contested races. Nururdin says that she's noticed more people wanting to be active at the local level, including with the school board and Dane County Board. And Parks has noticed people getting engaged on topics like housing, school referendums, and other issues that affect their daily lives. Lieffring says that when things are going well, people tend to ignore local government, but things aren't going well right now.  Change is on the horizon in the city of Madison as a number of Common Council seats are up for grabs as the city adjusts to its new staggered terms. And in Dane County there are more unopposed races. Nururdin wants to see more debate and constituent feedback about Dane County Board positions, but this is challenging because newsrooms struggle to devote a lot of time and energy to smaller races, says Lieffring. The Governor's race may be the hottest line on the ballot with a large primary field of Democratic candidates but only two Republican contenders. Nururdin says that people want to see candidates who are active in the community, not just at press opportunities. And Lieffring wants to see the candidates go beyond political slogans.  Christina Lieffring is Tone Madison's Managing Editor, a free-wheelin' freelancer, and lifelong Midwesterner. Enjoyiana Nururdin is a Madisonian and the local government reporter at the Cap Times Newspaper where she covers the ins and outs of City Hall and politics in Dane County. A graduate of UW-Madison’s School of Journalism and Columbia University in New York, Enjoyiana brings experience covering homelessness, government transparency and uplifting community voices in her work. Why do parents think school is going great, while many kids feel disengaged and uninspired? In this Facing the Dark episode, Wayne Stender and Dr. Kathy Koch unpack research revealing the growing gap between how parents and students experience school. Together, they explore why learning often feels passive, why awe and wonder fade as kids get older, and how families can re-ignite curiosity by connecting schoolwork to real life. From dinner-table conversations to creative family rhythms, this episode equips parents to help kids move beyond grades and tests toward meaningful, integrated learning rooted in purpose, faith, and joy.
