Hi friends, welcome back to the podcast! I'm thrilled to share this deeply insightful conversation I had with Stacey Uhrig, a Certified Trauma Recovery Coach who has a gift for breaking down the complexities of developmental trauma into something we can all understand and work with.In this episode, Stacey and I explore how our childhood patterns and core beliefs influence our lives—and how we can heal and transform them to find greater peace, joy, and connection. Stacey's approach draws heavily from Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz that looks at the different “parts” within us and how they work together—or sometimes in conflict—to shape our inner world. Here's what we cover:What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)? Stacey explains how our inner parts develop as a response to survival needs, creating a fascinating internal system that's here to protect us, even if it sometimes causes us stress or pain.Understanding Our Inner Parts: Stacey describes how these internal “managers,” “firefighters,” and “exiles” influence our behaviors, relationships, and decision-making.From Trauma to Wholeness: We dive into how IFS helps us connect with our authentic self, clearing emotional layers and finding self-leadership.Tools and Resources: Stacey shares her favorite books like No Bad Parts by Dr. Richard Schwartz and encourages exploring IFS-trained therapists or coaches for deeper work. This conversation was so healing and enlightening for me, and I hope it resonates deeply with you too. I left feeling empowered to approach my inner world with more compassion and curiosity—and I can't wait for Stacey to come back for another episode!Connect with Stacey Uhrig:Website: flipyourmindset.comInstagram: @staceyuhrigYouTube: Flip Your MindsetStay Connected with Me:Website: katiefarinas.comInstagram: @katiemomandyogiEmail: katie@momontheverge.orgIf this episode spoke to you, I'd love for you to share it with someone you care about! Are you interested in hallucinating to solve urban challenges? Summary of the report titled Harnessing social imagination in the era of the climate crisis by the Centre for Public Impact, published on their website. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Carina Gormley in episode 298 talking about the need for our collective imagination to solve the climate crisis, for example. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see why our hallucination matters to solve urban crises. This project investigated how we might use social imagination to create new practices and processes. Find the report through this link. “They [our kids] can't be more regulated than you are. They can only be as regulated as the least regulated person in the house.” - Stacey Uhrig EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I had the pleasure of speaking with Stacey Uhrig, an adoptive parent and certified trauma recovery coach. Stacey shared her journey into adoption, which began after her own struggles with infertility. She emphasized the emotional complexities and challenges that come with adoption, particularly the trauma that both adoptees and adoptive parents may face. Stacey discussed her experiences raising two boys adopted from Korea and the significant insights she gained about trauma, attachment, and the impact of early disruptions in a child's life. We explored the importance of understanding the emotional wounds that children may carry from their past experiences, even before they come into our homes. Throughout our conversation, we highlighted the need for adoptive parents to do their own emotional work in order to better support their children. Stacey shared valuable resources, including her own ebook, What is Trauma Really?, and her podcast, Flip Your Mindset, both of which aim to educate and empower those affected by adoption. We also touched on the misconceptions surrounding trauma and the importance of approaching parenting with empathy and an open mind. This episode serves as a reminder that understanding adoption trauma is crucial for creating a nurturing environment for our children. I hope this conversation resonates with adoptive parents and encourages them to seek knowledge and support in their parenting journey. ===============
None of us come to parenting without our own mindsets, core beliefs, and past emotional experiences. All of this informs us as parents and shapes our thoughts, emotions and behavior related to our kids and teenagers. But too many of us fail to recognize this side of parenting, even when we're desperate to change the dynamic in our home. Very often, parents must address their own emotional wounds - unresolved trauma from their own formative years - in order to become the parents they want to be.Listen to my conversation with today's guest, Stacey Uhrig, a trauma specialist, working to help heal people from the all-too-often overlooked issues from their past. Starting started her journey with healing at age 15. She instinctively knew, in an era where therapy was not considered an option, that she needed help. She fought for her right to therapy and was able to get it. But after 20 years in therapy, she was still having panic attacks. She knew that there had to be a better way. Stacey began another branch of her journey, diving deep into developmental trauma and it's impact on our mental health. Around the same time, Stacey started her family through adoption and then realized that there was a hidden struggle for parents of adopted children. The struggle of dealing with the trauma that many adopted children experience before coming to their forever homes. Stacey breaks down what trauma is and it is so much broader than we have been lead to believe. Stacey says that trauma is not just the experience, but how we integrate it into our identity. Through various techniques, including hypnosis, Stacey gets to the subconscious beliefs that impact our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Stacey says that often her clients don't even realize that they have had trauma in their lives or that it is impacting their life. But they often feel stuck and they can't figure out why. Stacey says if you have ever felt that you were not enough, that you were different and that you can't have what you want because you are unworthy of having it, then you have experienced trauma. We talk about epi-genetics, highly sensitive people, the window of tolerance, toxic positivity, toxic optimism, the growth that can come from experiencing trauma and how we don't have to identify with our mental health diagnosis. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.06.30.547281v1?rss=1 Authors: Luppi, A. I., Uhrig, L. I., Tasserie, J., Signorelli, C. M., Stamatakis, E. A., Destexhe, A., Jarraya, B., Cofre, R. Abstract: A central challenge of neuroscience is to elucidate how the orchestration of brain function is modulated by different states of consciousness. Here, we investigate the link between distributed structural and functional brain organisation in functional MRI signals of non-human primates, through bi-directional causal manipulations of consciousness. During varying levels of propofol, sevoflurane, or ketamine anaesthesia, and subsequent restoration of responsiveness by deep brain stimulation of the central thalamus, we investigate how loss of consciousness impacts distributed patterns of structure-function organisation across scales. Combining the specificity of electrical stimulation with global fMRI coverage of the entire cortex, we report that distributed brain activity under anaesthesia is increasingly constrained by brain structure across scales, coinciding with anaesthetic-induced collapse of multiple dimensions of hierarchical cortical organisation. Crucially, we show that these distributed signatures of anaesthetic-induced loss of consciousness are observed across different anaesthetics, and they are reversed by electrical stimulation of the central thalamus, coinciding with recovery of behavioural markers of consciousness during propofol anaesthesia. No such effects were observed upon stimulation of a control anatomical site, ventral lateral thalamus, demonstrating specificity. Through causal manipulations of consciousness that integrate pharmacology and electrical intracranial stimulation of the thalamus, our results identify global signatures of consciousness that are under local causal control by specific nuclei of the thalamus. Overall, the present work broadens our understanding of the link between brain network organisation and distributed function in supporting consciousness, and the interplay between local and global functional architecture. Are you interested in how the concept of stigmergy applies to human cooperation? Summary of the article titled Stigmergy in human practice: Coordination in construction work from 2012 by Lars Rune Christensen published in the Cognitive Systems Research journal. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how the concept of stigmergy, the concept of coordination coming from the study of bugs translates to the study of humans. This article compares bug and human coordination and explores the utility of stigmergy for human practice through the example of construction work. As the most important things, I would like to highlight 3 aspects: Stigmergy is a concept of cooperation from entomology, but it can be translated to human context. In the human context, stigmergy means the distributed cooperative work tasks that are integrated by individual actions based on previous individuals' actions. The complex collaboration of construction work can be seen and interpreted as human stigmergy with the addition of forward-looking mindfulness to improve connected tasks. You can find the article through this link. Abstract: Stigmergy is a concept of coordination that may be employed to analyse human practice in complex work settings such as the building process. However, the concept of stigmergy was not originally developed in order to describe human practice, rather it was developed within the field of entomology i.e. the study of social insects. Transposing the concept of stigmergy from the field of entomology to the study of human practice raises a central question: Does the concept of stigmergy add anything to our ability to account for the coordination of human cooperative work? We will argue that it does. We will (1) explicitly compare and delimit the concept of stigmergy to well-established concept describing human coordinative practices and show that it differs from these concepts, and we will (2) apply the concept of stigmergy to an analysis of the coordination of construction work in order to explore the utility of the concept in the analysis of human practice.

Travis Uhrig is the co-founder of Curio Cards, which is the oldest known NFT art project on Ethereum. Launching on May 9, 2017, well before "NFT" was a household acronym (and even before the launch of CryptoPunks), the goal of the project was to use Ethereum to create a new model for digital artwork ownership. The collection features 30 unique NFT cards from 7 different artists. Aside from being co-founder of Curio Cards, Travis is a software engineer who is a fan of cats, cooking and Trello. -- Our "OG Fan" NFT is here! Dr. Uhrig is vice president of Cancer Nursing Services at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and gives great insight on what it has been like leading others on the front lines during the pandemic.
I am talking with Travis Uhrig who was one of the founders of Curio Cards NFT. Curio Cards became famous among NFT collectors this past month as the project was 'rediscovered'. And is now widely recognized as being the first art NFT project on the Ethereum blockchain. As Travis says during the interview, they couldn't give the NFTs away in 2017. However this past month all of the cards were sold within minutes of the project's rediscovery. Travis Uhrig is the founder of Curio Cards and he organizes the Bitcoin meetup group in San Francisco, which boasts over 6,000 members. Last May, he quit his job altogether to become full-time crypto. This is around the same time that he launched the first set of Curio Cards. Curio Card's mission is to create a platform for artists and collectors that finally benefits artists. As it states on their website: "Until now it's not been possible to sell digital artwork without massive fees, theft, or restrictive DRM." Curio Cards is changing that. The project is doing phenomenally well, with over a thousand cards sold and artists making on average $300 - $900, according to Uhrig. Any artist can submit their work for free to be voted on at community.curio.cards. Learn more at Artnome.com

C. Abstract: Neuroimaging non-human primates (NHPs) is a growing, yet highly specialized field of neuroscience. Resources that were primarily developed for human neuroimaging often need to be significantly adapted for use with NHPs or other animals, which has led to an abundance of custom, in-house solutions. In recent years, the global NHP neuroimaging community has made significant efforts to transform the field towards more open and collaborative practices. Here we present the PRIMatE Resource Exchange (PRIME-RE), a new collaborative online platform for NHP neuroimaging. PRIME-RE is a dynamic community-driven hub for the exchange of practical knowledge, specialized analytical tools, and open data repositories, specifically related to NHP neuroimaging. PRIME-RE caters to both researchers and developers who are either new to the field, looking to stay abreast of the latest developments, or seeking to collaboratively advance the field. Abstract: Anesthesia induces a reconfiguration of the repertoire of functional brain states leading to a high function-structure similarity. However, it is unclear how these functional changes lead to loss of consciousness. Here we suggest that the mechanism of conscious access is related to a general dynamical rearrangement of the intrinsic hierarchical organization of the cortex. To measure cortical hierarchy, we applied the Intrinsic Ignition analysis to resting-state fMRI data acquired in awake and anesthetized macaques. Our results reveal the existence of spatial and temporal hierarchical differences of neural activity within the macaque cortex, with a strong modulation by the depth of anesthesia and the employed anesthetic agent. Higher values of Intrinsic Ignition correspond to rich and flexible brain dynamics whereas lower values correspond to poor and rigid, structurally driven brain dynamics. Moreover, spatial and temporal hierarchical dimensions are disrupted in a different manner, involving different hierarchical brain networks. All together suggest that disruption of brain hierarchy is a new signature of consciousness loss. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.11.078535v1?rss=1 Authors: Grigis, A., Tasserie, J., Frouin, V., Jarraya, B., Uhrig, L. Abstract: Decoding the levels of consciousness from cortical activity recording is a major challenge in neuroscience. Using clustering algorithms, we previously demonstrated that resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) data can be split into several clusters also called "brain states" corresponding to "functional configurations" of the brain. Here, we propose to use a supervised machine learning method based on artificial neural networks to predict functional brain states across levels of consciousness from rsfMRI. Because it is key to consider the topology of brain regions used to build the dynamical functional connectivity matrices describing the brain state at a given time, we applied BrainNetCNN, a graph-convolutional neural network (CNN), to predict the brain states in awake and anesthetized non-human primate rsfMRI data. BrainNetCNN achieved a high prediction accuracy that lies in [0.674, 0.765] depending on the experimental settings. We propose to derive the set of connections found to be important for predicting a brain state, reflecting the level of consciousness. The results demonstrate that deep learning methods can be used not only to predict brain states but also to provide additional insight on cortical signatures of consciousness with potential clinical consequences for the monitoring of anesthesia and the diagnosis of disorders of consciousness. R., Surendra, K., Haller, M., Karl, V., Uhrig, P., Maier, A., Krauss, P. Abstract: In the field of neurobiology of language, neuroimaging studies are generally based on stimulation paradigms consisting of at least two different conditions. Depending on the desired evaluation, these conditions, in turn, have to contain dozens of items to achieve a good signal to noise ratio. Designing those paradigms can be very time-consuming. Subsequently, a group of participants is stimulated with the new paradigm, while brain activity is assessed, e.g. with EEG/MEG. The measured data are then pre-processed and finally contrasted according to the different stimulus conditions. In this way, only a limited number of analyses and hypothesis tests can be performed, while for alternative or further analyses, completely new paradigms usually need to be designed. This traditional approach is necessarily data-limited, and the cost-benefit ratio is therefore rather poor. In contrast, in computational linguistics analyses are based on text corpora, which allow a vast variety of hypotheses to be tested by repeatedly re-evaluating the data set. Furthermore, text corpora also allow exploratory data analysis in order to generate new hypotheses. By combining the two approaches, we here present a unified approach of continuous natural speech and MEG to generate a corpus-like database of speech-evoked neuronal activity.
