In this episode, Dr. Mona is joined by Chelsea and Kaitlin, the founders of Mama Psychologists, to unpack a crucial topic that many new mothers face: the difference between the "baby blues" and more serious perinatal mood disorders. Together, they challenge the misconception that postpartum anxiety and depression always look like crying on the floor. Instead, they discuss the subtle, real-world signs—like the inability to hand your baby to a loved one without a racing heart or a mental to-do list that won't shut off at 3:00 AM. The "Baby Blues" vs. Postpartum Disorders: While the baby blues are an incredibly common reaction to the massive hormonal shifts right after birth, symptoms that persist, worsen, or significantly disrupt daily functioning may signal postpartum anxiety or depression. Signs of Postpartum Depression: Key red flags include a persistent low mood, an inability to enjoy things you used to love, and struggling to meet basic needs like eating, drinking, or showering. Signs of Postpartum Anxiety: This often manifests as racing thoughts, an intrusive "worst-case scenario" mindset, physical agitation (like a racing heart or tension), and difficulty turning off your mind to rest, even when the baby is sleeping. The Timeline Myth: Postpartum mood disorders don't always appear in the early weeks; they can frequently emerge four months postpartum or even later. Seeking support is vital, no matter how much time has passed since giving birth. Breaking the Silence: Many moms suffer in silence due to guilt, shame, or fear of judgment. Finding a safe person to talk to is the first step toward healing because suffering quietly is not a badge of honor. Want more? Listen to the full, original episode. Postpartum depression is real, and in some cases it can be severe and even dangerous. Mothers who are struggling deserve compassion, support, and proper care. But what happens when a normal, difficult transition into motherhood increasingly becomes viewed through the lens of pathology? In this episode, I explore the rise of postpartum depression as a cultural phenomenon, the expansion of screening and diagnosis, and whether we are sometimes pathologizing experiences that previous generations understood differently. I also examine the role of feminism, women's media, and modern therapeutic culture in shaping how women anticipate and experience motherhood.
Kat and Guy discussed Guy's recent skin cancer diagnosis and successful melanoma removal, and the importance of self checks when it has also come with Kat's own experience with breast cancer, her double mastectomy, and her ongoing recovery. The two reflected on the complex emotions that come with surviving serious illness, including feeling guilty for having "less severe" outcomes than others, and the importance of early detection. Kat also opened up about her full-page New York Times Style feature, the insecurities she's faced following reconstruction surgery, and the cruel backlash she received from readers who suggested she "deserved" cancer because of her work at Fox News. The conversation closed on a hopeful note as Kat shared how motherhood and watching her baby boy grow have brought new meaning and joy to her life (and how Cheems is fairing with the new member of the family). Postpartum depression affects between 15 and 20% of Australian women during the first year after birth which translates to thousands of new mums and about 100,000 families every year that experience this often invisible condition. For anyone who has experienced it, you’ll likely know that it is more than a short wave of sadness. It can have lasting effects on mums, on their relationships with their babies, on their friendships and their relationships. So we wanted to create this episode not just for the mums who have experienced PPD, but for their friends and partners so that we can all better understand the condition and be able to support someone we love who is experiencing it. Welcome to another cozy chat on The Waves of Joy— where we keep it real, raw, and a little bit glam. In this episode, we're diving into the beautifully chaotic fourth trimester. We're talking baby blues (and knowing when it's more), the supplements that might help, and yes — even a little Botox self-care without the mom guilt. We cover the hot-button topic of co-sleeping vs. the Snoo, and how this mama is blending the two to survive sleep deprivation. Plus: feeding on demand, bottle feeding one meal a day, and the never-ending question — “Is she gaining enough weight?” (Thank you, Hatch scale)Let's also get into the nitty gritty: swaddling, burping, tiny razor-sharp fingernails, and whether it's normal to dread the first postpartum shower. And because moms deserve comfort too, we're talking about those mini sanity-savers: daily walks, a little yoga, and the magical neck relief from the Achedaway heated scraper (yes, please). You're not alone in the swirl. Let's laugh, vent, and feel seen together.

Episode 146. This week, Kristen is joined by Rebecca Fox Starr: author, writer, wife, mother and founder of “Mommy, Ever After.” Rebecca started her blog in 2010 after the birth of her daughter, when she realized that no one was speaking honestly about the difficulties, fears, boredom, loneliness and mixed-emotions that come along with all of the happy enchantment of motherhood. Kristen and Rebecca dive deep into the important conversation around normalizing anxiety, depression, and the overwhelming feelings many experience during pregnancy. Rebecca discusses her books, with her first being “Beyond the Baby Blues: Anxiety and Depression During and After Pregnancy,” and offers insights on how to breathe through the changes in your body and mindset. Kristen opens up about dealing with social anxiety and the stigma surrounding medication during pregnancy. They also dive into the fears of childbirth and share practical tips for coping with anxiety during this transformative time. Rebecca answers listener questions about topics like OCD, returning to work post-pregnancy, and the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression. Plus, they explore the importance of setting both internal and external boundaries to protect your mental well-being. Tune in for a candid conversation about mental health during pregnancy and how to nurture yourself along the way. A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
A hundred years ago, suffragists lobbied to win women the right to vote. Linguistically speaking, though, suffrage isn't about "suffering." It's from a Latin word that involves voting. Plus: military cadences often include Jody calls, rhyming verses about the mythical guy who steals your sweetheart while you're off serving the country. But just who is Jody, anyway? Finally, maybe you've resolved to read more books this year. But how to ensure your success? Start by rearranging your bookshelves for easier viewing. And think of reading like physical fitness: Sneak in a little extra activity here and there, and you'll reach your goal before you know it. Also, bless your heart, baby blue, a brain teaser about the words no and not, wall stretcher, desire path, neckdown, sneckdown, and can't dance, and too wet to plow.
