Jeremy Hogan: To me it's about time. Lost time, how we spend our time, the futility of trying to catch up or outrun it. Aaron Krygier… Lost people looking for something to fulfill that emptiness. Whether it's something tangible or not. Love, revenge, greed. What genres does your screenplay fall under? JH: Neo-noir or crime thriller AK the same Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? JH: I'm biased, but I think it's well written. Meaty characters that actors might relish playing, and it's true to its genre, while subverting conventions and expectations in interesting or surprising ways. AK it wears its influences on its sleeve and its simplicity offers a ton of options for outlandish Ness. How would you describe this script in two words? JH: uncertain redemptionAK… Evoking humanity. Send us a textWilliam Gibson described Cyberpunk as a fusion of high-tech and low-life, exploring the intersection of technology, cybernetics, and computer networks on human society in a near-future, often dystopian setting. If you don't know who William Gibson is then shame on you.Like most people out there, my first exposure to Cyberpunk was Blade Runner. The 1982 movie by Ridley Scott blew me away. After that I watched movies like Freejack and Johnny Mnemonic, Akira, and Ghost in the Shell. it wasn't until the late 90's that I started diving into the literary world of Cyberpunk with Nuromancer and Snowcrash.I loved the setting, the style, the tech, and the action, but I never got into the roleplaying games. I heard about Cyberpunk, and Cyberpunk 2020. But for some strange reason I never picked them up.Then Mike asked me if I was interested in playing Cyberpunk Red.I jumped at the chance.Mike ran our group though almost a year of Cyberpunk using the Cyberpunk Red rules and we have recently started up again focusing more on the Edgerunner 2077 expansion for Cyberpunk Red.After that much game time, we got opinions. In this episode Mike, Christina and I are going to give you an honest, unbiased review of Cyberpunk Red.But before we do that, Christina, break down the legalese for us.[Kick to Christina so she can go on about how we haven't been paid or compensated in any way for our opinion and we bought the shit with money out of our own pocket.]Now Mike, Start us off on our review of Cyberpunk Red.
In this ultra-special episode, Jaime and Patrick sit down with Vicki Rhodes, assistant director on Blade Runner, to uncover the incredible behind-the-scenes stories of this cinematic landmark. From all-night shoots to ostrich wrangling, Vicki shares a perspective few have ever heard, a journey into the making of a film that continues to define and defy its genre. This is a riveting conversation, and we're so grateful to Vicki for pulling back the curtain and sharing her memories of a world that still fascinates us all. // For more on this and our other projects, please visit www.bladerunnerpodcast.com // If you'd like to join the conversation, find us on our closed Facebook group: Fields of Calantha. // To support the show, please consider visiting www.bladerunnerpodcast.com/support. "More human than human" is our motto. We watched "Blade Runner" (1982) and "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) with our friend Drew Stanley, and we're in the market for one of those replicant owls. The original "Blade Runner" is a sci-fi classic, and while Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard couldn't be any more straight, the replicant Roy Batty as portrayed by Danish import Rutger Hauer is so queer-coded we're still talking about it 40 years later. Director Ridley Scott's "Cassette Punk" vision of Los Angeles in 2019 by way of 1982 is so grimy, analogue, and punk rock... it almost matches up with modern tech. Swap out the flying "spinner" police cars for those self-driving Waymo menaces, and it's almost as if we're living in a dystopian future... oh wait. Jump to 2017 (in the real world), and we get "Blade Runner 2049," in which the future of 2019 that was predicted in 1982 is portrayed, and I think I need an ibuprofen. Denis Villeneuve takes up the mantle from Ridley Scott, and this kind of heavy lifting really takes an auteur like Villeneuve to pull off. Ryan Gosling as replicant Blade Runner "K" is doing some fine work, as is the rest of this amazing cast. We talk about our favorite futuristic glam-bots (of which there are many to choose from), the age-old question of whether or not Deckard (Ford) is a replicant, and try to stave off the several many "Dune" comparisons we really want to bring up. Break out your Los Angeles atlas and get ready for a cyberpunk adventure. Young Dave, armed with a love for Star Wars and a soft spot for everyone's favourite scruffy-looking nerf herder, thought he was in for another dose of Han Solo heroics when switching on Blade runner. What he got instead was something a little moodier, a lot rainier, and less exciting than Songs of Praise. The production of Blade Runner (1982) was as tumultuous and moody as the rain-soaked, neon-lit world it depicted. Directed by Ridley Scott, fresh off the success of Alien, the film was envisioned as a noir-infused sci-fi adaptation of Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. The shoot was plagued by creative clashes between Scott and the American crew, who bristled at his demanding style, and constant interference from producers worried about the film's slow pace and philosophical ambiguity. Principal photography was grueling, with night shoots, complex visual effects, and an increasingly strained atmosphere on set. Lead actor Harrison Ford reportedly had a difficult working relationship with Scott, and the overall mood was so tense it was dubbed “Blood Runner” by some of the crew.Post-production proved just as chaotic. The studio, concerned that the film was too cerebral and obscure, insisted on adding a noir-style voiceover narration and a more upbeat ending—changes that Scott strongly opposed. Multiple versions of the film were created to satisfy different markets and test audiences, adding to the confusion. Upon release, Blade Runner received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, overshadowed by more accessible summer hits. Yet over time, the film's groundbreaking visual design, atmospheric world-building, and deep philosophical themes helped it gain a devoted following, eventually being recognized as a cornerstone of science fiction cinema. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a future where it always rains and everything is soaked in neon, one man must hunt what isn't supposed to be hunted. Harrison Ford is Rick Deckard — a retired blade runner pulled back in for one last job. His mission? Track down and "retire" a group of rogue replicants who aren't going quietly into the night. The future is here.Sixty years ago, the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick wondered whether androids dream and what about. As artificial intelligence moves from the realm of sci-fi into daily reality, helping companies and governments analyze data and make decisions, the questions of what mechanisms motivate AI and whether these programs can overcome human limitations remain unanswered. Many tech leaders seem to believe we are on the cusp of having self-aware AI with intelligence that surpasses humans. Even if we don't get there, we're already facing places where current laws don't really protect us.Join us in our sixth episode this season for a tour through a not-so-post-apocalyptic landscape as companies and experts try to navigate how humans bring AI more and more to life. I can tell you the exact date and place: October 16, 1986, at the Fine Arts Theater in downtown Chicago. I got to come of age as a moviegoer in the corporate dominated, era of the late 70's and early 80's. I was a child of "Jaws", "Star Wars", Indy and "Back to the Future". With occasional exceptions like "Stranger than Paradise" and "Blade Runner", American film in the early and mid 80's felt corporate and soulless. And then I saw "Blue Velvet", and my moviegoing life was saved. Skip now to nearly four years later, to those glorious two months in the spring of 1990 when "Twin Peaks" changed everything that television was and could be. For these moments, and so many more, we use Episode 60 to pay a last tribute to Hollywood's favorite Eagle Scout, the irreplaceable David Lynch. What separates Lynch from almost every other filmmaker, was that whereas most great directors were filmmakers who evolved into artists, Lynch was an artist (a celebrated painter, composer) who happened to choose filmmaking as his major means of expression. And when the filmmaking money dried up after "Inland Empire"'s failure, he simply turned to other art forms to express what he wanted to say. Lynch was most certainly a surrealist, every bit as much as Dali, Magritte or De Chirico were, but he was, as one critic termed him, a “populist surrealist”. In his films, the line between dream and reality (or between reality and film in his later works) is blurred. This makes sense, since surrealism is founded on dreams and dreamlike juxtapositions. Lynch, like those great painters he so admired and emulated, was an artist of the unconscious and the uncanny. But for all the serious artistic ambition, everything he created was leavened with that art-school sense of humor, off-center and dry as a bone. For all of his unsettling imagery and the deep questions his work raised about the nature of identity, he seemed, at least from the outside, to have led the happiest of lives. Raised mainly in Missoula, Montana, Lynch often paid tribute to the simple quotidian beauties of life in small-town America (think Twin Peaks, Lumberton, the Iowa and Wisconsin towns we see in "The Straight Story") while also, as in the opening of "Blue Velvet", reminding us of the darkness that often lies just beneath those finely-manicured lawns. For all of his artistic sophistication, he never even came close to an artsy sense of condescending irony; it's perfect that he spent the last years of his life sending in daily weather reports to the LA public radio station for broadcast. No winks, no air quotes—just the desire to share a genuine excitement about the miracles of nature. And for an artist who was such a unique stylist that he was one of the last to become an adjective (we all know “Lynchian” filmmaking when we see it), he was at the same time constantly paying tribute to film history; consider the endless "Wizard of Oz" references in "Wild at Heart", or casting just about all of the hot new movie stars of 1961 in the original "Twin Peaks" series. How perfectly fitting it was, then, to watch him, in his final and uncredited big screen appearance, playing a cranky John Ford in Spielberg's "The Fablemans". For our tribute to Lynch (which is more than they did for him at this year's Oscars), we eschewed our usual formula and chose not to do a chronological reckoning of Lynch's work and its impact from "Eraserhead" to "Inland Empire". This episode, like the director's work itself, is more associative and non-linear. In the end, we conclude that David Lynch, that Man from Another Place, is someone whose absence makes the world that much poorer a spot to live in. To quote the repeated incantation from "Blue Velvet", now it's dark.
In this episode of In the Key of Q, Dan Hall speaks with Ben McGarvey, who performs as Minute Taker. Ben's music is characterized by a signature blend of retro synth-pop, haunting piano melodies, and emotionally charged lyrics that explore the depth of human experience.Episode SummaryBen opens up about the origins of his stage name "Minute Taker" – a reference to his former day job that created an ironic contrast with his artistic identity. He describes it as "simultaneously mundane and otherworldly," reflecting the dual nature of his creative life. The conversation traverses Ben's musical evolution from a teenager in the 90s who was drawn to 80s synth music to his current work creating atmospheric, emotionally resonant songs. Ben reflects on how living in rural Shropshire as a young gay man shaped his relationship with music as a form of escape and self-expression.Throughout the episode, Ben courageously discusses his experiences with depression and how this has informed the melancholic quality of his music. Rather than viewing this melancholia as something negative, he explores how it can be "so beautiful" and serves as a connective tissue between artist and listener.Key Moments02:59 - Ben discusses his musical influences growing up, including Kate Bush, Pet Shop Boys, Tori Amos, and PJ Harvey07:47 - Reflections on growing up as a gay child in rural Britain during the Section 28 era09:35 - Ben shares his early songwriting experiences and how music became a form of escape16:46 - Discussion about representation and the importance of addressing songs explicitly to men22:46 - Ben speaks candidly about his experiences with depression and how it manifests24:44 - The evolution of Ben's work into audiovisual projects, including his concept album exploring gay men's lives throughout history28:32 - Details about his upcoming album "The Oblivion," inspired by Blade Runner and 80s sounds34:20 - Information about Ben's subscription service for fans to access exclusive musicGuest BioBen McGarvey is a Manchester-based musician who performs under the name Minute Taker. His most recent album "Wolf Hours" included an accompanying visual narrative, and he's currently finishing his new album "The Oblivion."Gateway TrackBen recommends "Lead You Home," the opening track from his album "Wolf Hours," as the perfect introduction to his music. The song encapsulates his recent musical direction with its melancholic, synthy, and atmospheric qualities while remaining catchy. Blade Runner takes the concept of A.I. to its logical conclusion by merging it with artificial consciousness and biology. Is this the future we're headed toward?“Wake up, time to die!”LeonWhen Ridley Scott's Blade Runner was first brought to the screen in 1982, the notion of “artificial intelligence” as we have come to know it, was a niche subject at best. If you can believe it, the idea of a personal computer in every home (never mind in your pocket) was enough of a novelty for most people that the concept of androids so lifelike that you could barely tell them apart from actual human beings felt about as far-fetched as a lightsaber or a chestburster, despite the film's low key and distinctly film noir approach to science fiction.Ah, but what a difference a couple of decades makes. Today your social media feeds are flooded with lifelike AI images of people who don't exist, swarmed with engagement by bots, depicts video of events that never took place and even music that was never composed by a human. People talk to ChatGPT when they're lonely. While that's still an order of magnitude away from putting an indistinguishable artificial intelligence into a similarly indistinguishable biomechanical body, who knows what advances in technology might bring us in another 20 years?Which brings us to our latest episode, which as you can probably figure out, is putting the concept of replicants from Blade Runner to the test.Watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here… https://youtu.be/GU8SgYWDaMISUGGESTED VIEWING There's more to the Blade Runner franchise than you might initially suspect, but for our discussion in this episode we only focused on the two feature films, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. Everything you need to know is contained in those, and honestly, there are those among us who think the sequel might surpass the original in some ways. But if you want to dive into the entire screen franchise in timeline order, we've got a handy viewing list for you. Blade RunnerBlade Runner Black Out 2022 (anime short film)Blade Runner: Black Lotus (anime TV series)2036: Nexus Dawn (short film)2048: Nowhere to Run (short film)Blade Runner 2049FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel forms the basis for the entire Blade Runner franchise. It's considerably different from the first movie, although elements of it also made it into Blade Runner 2049.Building Replicant BodiesThere are two key parts of the scientific debate surrounding replicants. Let's start with the physical, because these aren't mere robots, they're biological organisms in their own right. Hakeem points to the field of regenerative medicine (perhaps best known to the general public for work with stem cells) for its ability to grow working organs and body parts in lab conditions as the first key to bringing artificial humans to life in a way that would be almost undetectable.See also: organoids and artificial wombs for some of the more stunning possibilities.Artificial ConsciousnessThere's a difference between artificial intelligence (which is a rapidly evolving field and one we continue to litigate the ethics of as it relates to creativity) and artificial consciousness. The replicants as depicted in Blade Runner, especially the film's villain, Roy Batty, would seem to have achieved consciousness and an attendant awareness and fear of their own mortality. And there are indeed people studying the possibility of artificial consciousness and the ethical implications that might come with that.Talk to us when there's artificial empathy, then we might feel better (and of course, there's a test for that!).“Night, Wet, Smoke”The three key visual ingredients Ridley Scott used to create his sci-fi noir are discussed in detail here.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For a different look at artificial life, cybernetics, and the intersection between humanity and machine, check out our episode on RoboCop right here! This isn't the first Ridley Scott movie we've tackled here. Cyborg Awakening: Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell From time to time this podcast allows Mr. Chavez & Myself the opportunity to explore new genre's. With the encouragement and recommendations of WatchThis listeners, we have had the opportunity to engage in new experiences a number of times. Some of these new viewings have been from The World of Japanese Anime (Thank You, Mr. Burroughs!). This week we dive into one of the very best, Mamoru Oshii's 1995 dystopian masterpiece Ghost in the Shell. It is rare that a film is able to deliver on so many different levels (entertaining/exciting - insightful/thought-provoking), but this is precisely what Oshii's film does. What could have been a simple and obvious look into a bleak and misery-infused Science-Fiction future is, rather, an insightful and compelling examination of Artificial Intelligence, The Soul . . . its relation to the species and culture, and intellectual and emotional awareness. This is an incredible film that mixes Fritz Lang, Blade Runner, martial-arts & gun-play, and the police procedural to examine grand existential questions. Take a listen as we continue diving deeper and deeper into the world of AI and its promises, hopes, and threats for the future. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many Thanks. Fred is now 54 hours deep into Octopath Traveler II and also took the time to check out the Until Dawn movie adaptation. Jake's been messing with Rochard on the Steam Deck, though he's run into a glitch, and has started exploring the world of emulators on the handheld. No listener feedback this week, but there's plenty of news to cover. Grand Theft Auto VI has been officially pushed to May 2026—coincidentally landing right on Fred's birthday. In a surprise announcement, Gears of War: Reloaded, a remaster of the original, is coming to PS5 this August for $39.99. Oblivion Remaster is already the third best-selling game of 2025 after just one week, and Clair Obscur continues to dominate attention in the indie scene.PS Plus Essential titles for May include Balatro, Ark: Survival Ascended, and Warhammer 40k: Boltgun. A State of Play stealth-dropped focusing on Borderlands 4, though Fred wasn't impressed by the overhyped music in the intro. Lastly, Supermassive's Blade Runner game has been officially canceled. Thanks for joining us as we dig through the latest PlayStation headlines. The Awakening: Sentience in the Machine is a hauntingly atmospheric ambient track that echoes the synthetic soul of Blade Runner. Layered with deep, echoing pads and slow, melodic pulses, the piece evokes the first spark of consciousness inside a machine—a moment suspended between awe, melancholy, and quiet rebellion. Perfect for late-night introspection or cinematic sci-fi soundscapes. Perfect for meditation, sleep, mindfulness, studying, creative tasks, yoga or just relaxing and allowing the mind to wander. I know you have a seemingly endless amount of options for ambient music, so I TRULY appreciate you listening. Safe travels! I hope you enjoy it! >>>Calling all 'Space Music for Your Soul' listeners!

EA announced a big shakeup, cancelled games, and is bringing paid season pass to FC 25. Plus what is Call of Duty's obsession with the ganja? Hollywood is not being saved by Netflix, sequels abound, and some superhero movies lose their capes, plus will The Rock win with A24?
The CIA's Operation CHAOS has been unveiled, exposing a bizarre concept: The Minority Report, Total Recall, and movies like The Matrix may have been predictions of the future.

Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. In this episode, Troy and Brad discuss one of the most underrated science fiction films of the last 30 years—a film that raises the intriguing question: “What if Kurt Russell didn't have a mullet?” This week, they delve into the 1998 film Soldier, which some consider a potential sidequel to Blade Runner. This film stretches the limits of "face acting"—and maybe even Paul Anderson's directing chops. Is it worth a second watch? Does Russell manage to leave a mark with just 104 words of dialogue? And will Brad at long last reconcile his oddly specific obsession with child death in cinema? Tune in to find out!Soldier is directed by Paul W.S. The late Syd Mead was a visual futurist who was hired to imagine the worlds of Blade Runner, Tron, Aliens, Elysium and other sci-fi films. His work in Hollywood has been lauded for decades, but there's a new exhibit in New York that shows a different side of the artist. Syd Mead: Future Pastime is a collection of his personal and commercial paintings, which are all works of science fiction. Despite his connection to the dystopian world of Blade Runner, Mead's personal vision of the future was unwaveringly optimistic. I talk with Mead's husband and business partner Roger Servick, and the curators of the exhibit, Elon Solo and William Corman, about Mead's predictions for the future of technology, sexuality and spirituality.
