Jonathan and JP are spending six episodes inside the Harrison Ford filmography — not Star Wars, not Indiana Jones, but everything else. The films he made between the blockbusters, against the blockbusters, and long after the world had already decided who he was.Episode 1 starts with a question: who is Harrison Ford when he isn't playing a hero the whole world already loves?First up, Hanover Street — the 1979 WWII romance that Ford took because he'd never played a love scene before, hated making from start to finish, and has never seen. A film so thoroughly forgotten that it's not currently streaming anywhere. And yet there's a case to be made for it — Christopher Plummer quietly doing excellent work, a second half that generates real suspense, and Ford visibly more comfortable the moment someone points a gun at him than the moment someone kisses him. Which turns out to be genuinely revealing.Then Blade Runner. Fifty-plus consecutive nights of artificial rain. A crew so fed up they wore protest T-shirts. A director and star who feuded constantly over the voiceover, the Deckard question, and basically everything else. A film that flopped on release the same day as The Thing — both considered too cold and strange for audiences who just wanted to watch E.T. — and went on to become one of the most influential science fiction films ever made. Ford has called it not one of his favourites. The Final Cut suggests he was wrong.The big debates: is Deckard a replicant? Which version did you watch? And does Ford's performance hold up, or does Rutger Hauer walk away with the entire film in the last ten minutes?Up next: the Peter Weir years — Witness and The Mosquito Coast. This episode we look at Blade Runner (1982) (dir. Ridley Scott) and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017) (dir. Denis Villeneuve), two films that imagine a world where the line between human and machine, creation and creator, has all but vanished. Ridley Scott's 1982 classic depicted a rain-soaked dystopia where “replicants”—bio-engineered beings—fight for recognition, identity, and life itself. Denis Villeneuve's 2017 sequel deepens that vision. Law operates in the shadows across both films: as surveillance, classification, and control. The “blade runners” themselves enforce a form of administrative violence that exposes the limits of legal personhood. What does it mean to have rights without recognition, or to be alive without legal existence? And conversely, what are the implications of recognizing rights and legal personhood in robots? This raises questions about whether the data users have given away over the past several years has actually made significant impact or is simply buried in chunks of information that aren't effectively connected to meaningful improvements in AI performance.

Doug Trumbull spent fifty years trying to convince Hollywood that the way movies are projected is fundamentally broken, and most of the industry never listened. The visual effects supervisor behind 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and the director of Silent Running and Brainstorm, Trumbull passed away in 2022. This conversation originally aired in July 2020, before a lot of you were listening, and it's one of the fullest records of him explaining his life's obsession in his own words. We're pulling it back out of the archives because it deserves a wider audience than it got the first time around. Chris and Doug cover the whole arc: getting hired at Graphic Films off a satellite painting, cold calling Stanley Kubrick's secret phone number to get on 2001, the accidental discovery of double stars that led him toward persistence of vision research, and the Showscan process he patented at Paramount. They also get into Trumbull's MAGI process, 4K stereo at 120 frames per second, representing 40 times the data of a traditional HD video, and Chris's own experience helping produce a piece of content rendered through it as a proof of concept. Trumbull gives his blunt account of Ang Lee allegedly misusing his patented process on Gemini Man. This is a conversation about a man who understood something about how movies work that almost nobody in the industry, including some of its biggest directors, ever fully grasped.
