Science Fiction University returns at long last, with an extended deep dive into one of the oldest and most unsettling questions in the genre — who can you trust when the threat is wearing a human face? The episode traces the theme of trust through three very different versions of the same story: John W. Campbell's 1938 novella "Who Goes There?", Howard Hawks' 1951 Cold War-era adaptation "The Thing from Another World", and John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece "The Thing" — showing how the same basic plot was transformed by the very different Americas that produced each version. Along the way there are detours through the nature of storytelling itself, the difference between trust and faith, the rise of the "mad scientist" trope, and why Carpenter's bleak, exhausted ending hits so differently than Campbell's optimistic one. What happens when a legendary New Jersey comedian sits down with two completely unfiltered gay hosts over Armenian coffee? Pure comedy chaos. This week we welcomed comedian Mike Marino to Undressed with Pol' and Patrik while we were in New York City, and from the second he walked in, we couldn't stop laughing. Between Mike's quick wit, our nonstop banter, and SnowWhite90210 stealing the spotlight as always, this episode felt like old friends sitting around the kitchen table. We talked about Mike's incredible 35-year career, spending a decade performing sketch comedy on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, touring the world, opening for legendary performers, and why comedians don't make their money from television specials—they make it on the road. Mike also gave us a behind-the-scenes look at his brand-new Amazon Prime comedy special, Back to School with Mike Marino, filmed inside the very high school where his stand-up journey began at just sixteen years old. We loved hearing how the local drama students helped build the set and how every ticket sold benefited the school's drama department. Of course, we couldn't resist talking Hollywood. We swapped stories about Jay Leno, Jon Voight, Jamie Kennedy, Tom Arnold, Frank Stallone, Robert Davi, Dino Martin, Martin Short, Comics Unleashed, the Beverly Hills Film Festival, and even our unforgettable evening sitting next to Jon Voight, Dyan Cannon, and Fran Drescher. Mike also shared hilarious stories about being the "plant" in Jay Leno's audience and how sometimes Jay depended on Mike to rescue jokes live on television. The conversation quickly turned into a comedy masterclass as Mike explained that the funniest material always comes from real life. Family, relationships, getting older, and everyday experiences connect with audiences far more than memorized punchlines. His advice to us? Our timing, chemistry and playful banter could easily become a comedy act of its own! Then it was time for Pol's famous Armenian Coffee Reading. It's Disclosure Day on the Book and Film Globe podcast, as host Neal Pollack and chief film critic Stephen Garrett disclose that they didn't much care for Steven Spielberg's new “the truth about aliens” film Disclosure Day. They both found the script poorly-paced and silly, and really disliked several of the film's performances, including soggy turns from Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo. Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, and especially Emily Blunt fare better, but they cannot get the best of a ham-handed scenario, bizarrely convoluted action sequences, and nonsensical world-building. What a mess.We get around to Backrooms this week as well. Critic Daniel Aaron joins Neal to discuss the Internet phenomenon turned box-office sensation. Backrooms is a completely fresh premise, sure to be ground down over time by bad sequels. But for now, it's all about liminal spaces, and genuinely haunting performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, as two Californians in the early 1990s who get caught in another dimension in the back of a failing furniture store. Creepy, unsettling, and weirdly funny, Backrooms will have you thinking twice before entering a strange space.Finally, Scott Gold is back on the podcast this week, talking to Neal about Spider Noir on Amazon Prime, featuring an iconic Nicolas Cage performance as a 1930s noir detective who also happens to have the power set of Spider-Man. The series is eight episodes when it should have been six, with its share of repetitive story beats. But that doesn't take away from its core pleasures: watching Cage give it his all, in a spectacularly physical comic, and semi-tragic, performance. There are excellent supporting turns as well, and enough action scenes to keep this from becoming too dull. After the death of actor Heath Ledger, it took a lot for Nolan to step back into his vision of Batman, but with the help of two memorable villains, and leaning into the political, social aspects found in the first film, he left the franchise on a financial high, with some questionable story choices that have aged well for some (Trey) and no so much for others (Ryan and Jay). Controversial, dated, unique, The Dark Knight Rises ends Nolan's superhero vision on his own terms, for better or for worse. The guys and their guest break down their thoughts on the film, what worked for them and what didn't, the appeal of Anne Hathaway, Nolan's use of the original characters throughout the third film, how radical or dull the film's politics are, the choices Bruce makes throughout the film, the puzzling ending, the opening plane sequence, and plenty of Bane voice impressions.
