What books do you think about when you hear the term Banned Books; do you envision classics like Huck Finn or The Catcher in the Rye? Or books that you wanted to sneak to read when you were a kid because it had swearing, magic, or sexual content? In fact a book series that has been arguably one of the most beloved in modern history, the Harry Potter series, is still high on the list of Banned Books so many years after it was first published. Our episode today was recorded during Banned Books Week, a weeklong annual event sponsored by the American Library Association to celebrate the freedom to read and bring awareness to both current and past attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. We believe this topic is one that you can think about any time of the year, not just for one designated week so we wanted to explore the topic with our guest, Natalie McCall, a librarian and head of youth services at the Mill Valley Public Library in the Bay area of California. She is also the host of a podcast called Eight Books That Made Me where she has conversations with Young Adult authors about 5 books that influenced them growing up and 3 books they encourage readers to check out now. Natalie discusses what it meant to be a hi-lo reader when she was a child, why she thinks one of the most common types of censorship for libraries is based on what books they don't choose to purchase, and about the role of libraries and the freedom to read as one of the foundations of democracy. Books Mentioned In This Episode: 1- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott 2- The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgon 3- Babysitter's Club series by Ann M. Martin 4- Sweet Valley High series by Francine Pascal 5- Fear Street series by R. L. Stine 6- Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine 7- The Rights of the Reader by Daniel Pennac 8- The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie 9- The Winter Pony by Iain Lawrence 10- A Love Story of Two Boys by Brian Roberson 11- Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder 12- Forever by Judy Blume 13- The Things They Carried by Tim O' Brien 14- All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque 15- Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell 16- Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones 17- Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds 18- The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery 19- Quiet by Susan Cain 20- Only You Can Save Mankind by Terry Pratchett 21- Johnny and the Dead by Terry Pratchett 22- Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card 23- The Black Kids by Christina Hammonds Reid 24- The Crossover by Kwame Alexander 25- Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson 26- Caminar by Skila Brown 27- Under the Mesquite by Guadelupe Garcia McCall 28- Inside Out and Back Again by Thanha Lai 29- Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse Podcast mentioned: 8 Books That Made Me TV shows mentioned: It's Ok to Not Be Ok (Korean Drama on Netflix) Dark (German Drama on Netflix)

He also had a very big mouth, was always getting into trouble and was unbelievably accident prone. Something inside of him made him start looking into the brainwave entrainment field when he began to observe that sometimes, time would seem to move faster and more pleasantly than other times. He eventually made the connection that when time seemed to move quicker the sounds, he was hearing were more rhythmic in nature. And when time seemed to painfully stand still, the surrounding sounds were far more disjointed in nature. After many years of using other people's products, with some limited success, he was determined to figure out why these recordings seemed to work only in a minor way, when all of the research he read suggested the effects should be more dominant than what he was experiencing. He decided that his best route to understanding was learning at the feet of an expert in the field. So, he finally contacted the world's foremost...

Sports Illustrated calls Trevor Moawad “the world’s best brain trainer.” With an accolade like that, and a history of working with the world’s elite athletes, you might expect him to have some sort of fancy, highly-complex system. If so, your expectations would be wrong. Moawad keeps it simple and straight-forward, focusing on changing what people say, what they consume, and how they form habits. On this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Trevor Moawad discusses a realistic alternative to the trendy idea of positive thinking, explains the connection between what you say out loud and how your life turns out, and proves conclusively that, contrary to popular belief, your past does not predict your future. This episode is brought to you by: Indeed Better Help: Get 10% off your first month at https://betterhelp.com/impacttheory   SHOW NOTES:   Negative thinking is bad, but positive thinking doesn’t work all the time either [2:42] It’s much easier to change what you say than it is to change what you think [7:07] Trevor tells stories of how people talked negative outcomes into existence [8:26] Tom and Trevor discuss Man’s Search for Meaning [12:13] Everyone has messed up thoughts, but you don’t have to say it out loud [13:36] Your past does not predict your future [15:48] You have to ask: what do I want, why do I want it, and why don’t I have it [20:06] If you watch 3 minutes of news it increases your chances of having a bad day by 27% [22:34] Trevor explains why hope matters [23:21] Trevor discusses why he says choice is an illusion [25:13] Trevor shares the impact he wants to have on the world [30:12]   QUOTES:   “If someone says something out loud, it’s ten times more powerful than if they think it.” [7:07]   “Negativity is a multiple of four to seven times more powerful than positivity. So think about that. If I say something out loud, it’s 10x. If it’s negative, it’s four to seven times more powerful. So when I say negative things out loud, it’s 40 to 70 times more likely that that will happen--or cause a result that won’t be good for me--than if I just didn’t say anything.” [7:21]   “If you say stupid sh*t out loud ultimately you’re predicting and perpetuating exactly what you don’t want to have happen.” [13:42]   “The past is real. In this episode, Francis talks about his company The Resilience Element which has the mission to reactivate people´s inner power and passion. In this episode, we deconstruct each component and Francis shares incredibly valuable insights to each of those components. So, Francis Piché is an enthusiastic speaker and mindset coach from Canada and the host of The Resilience Element Show that explores how individuals can follow their heart to accomplish their dreams despite delay and adversity encountered along the way. Raised in Quebec, Francis began cutting his teeth in sales at just 8-years-old by going door-to-door selling products for charities and fundraisers. Pounding the pavement pounded into Francis a love for connecting with people and fuelled his rise to top sales performer status at multiple international corporations, including Xerox. Soon after, Francis realized sales teams driven by numbers and dollar signs alone resulted in individuals who felt defined by numbers and disillusioned by signs of despair. Refusing to believe that making massive money and having huge happiness must exist in opposition, Francis embarked on a journey to discover the key element to sustained and sustainable satisfaction in life. His answer? The Resilience Element. Best-selling author Cal Newport literally wrote the book on how to “Get so good they can’t ignore you.” Instead of looking inwards and trying to find your one true passion, he advises lowering the bar and finding a few decent interests. Then, raise the bar for skill acquisition and mastery. Anyone feeling “stuck” in life will find his approach challenging and refreshing. So tune into this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, and listen to Cal Newport discuss why you should not necessarily follow your passion, why you should disconnect from social media, and why sacrifice promotes the good life.   This episode is brought to you by:  BrandCrowd: Get started for FREE by visiting https://BrandCrowd.com/maker Butcherbox: Use the discount code: "TOM" at https://butcherbox.com to get 20$ off and FREE BACON HelixSleep: Get 125 dollars off ALL mattress orders for our listeners at https://HelixSleep.com/IMPACT Audible: Start listening with a 30-day Audible trial and your first audiobook plus two Audible Originals are free.
