Regretfully Yours (Part 2)  The Four Categories of Regret from part 1 are: 1. Foundational Regrets - “If only I had more…” 2. Boldness Regrets - “If only took a risk …” 3. Moral Regret - “If I had that decision back I would have…” 4. Connection Regrets - “If I would have stayed connected to…”   How to Respond to Regret: 1. Be Aware of it (this is what the first podcast was dedicated to) Identify them in detail Explore why we have them. The keys to awareness 2. Express it - Do not deny regrets but express them with a select few trusted confidants. Disclosing our regrets. Be vulnerable for it: Releases some of the burden Begins making sense of the process when we begin to articulate Creates bonds to others who can relate and empathize. Eliminate isolation for regret grows in isolation. 3.  Embrace it - Make it matter because it does. To flippantly let on it doesn't mean anything is a sure way to have it hang around.  We can't transcend something we don't embrace. Feel the pain but don't let it turn to shame, acknowledge the hurt but don't let it turn into guilt. When we embrace it we can learn to embrace ourselves with self compassion, self- kindness and self-acceptance knowing that we are good men capable of doing things we may regret. 4. Transform it - renew it, reshape it, remold it, redo it, reconstruct it, rebuild it, recast it, reorder it, reframe it, reorganize it, restyle it.  Just ‘re' it. Turn a bad decision into good data. Turn a bad decision of something we did into a healthy expression of who we really are.   The Benefits of Regret: 1. Sharpens our decision making skills for the future. “I won't do that again” 2. Secures our performance on a range of tasks. The more we do the more we get to do but if we let our regrets of the past hold us back we won't try things which by the way  is one of the four categories of regrets. Don't measure our worth based on our performance but based on our character. As we often say in AMG. “You are a good man” 3.  Strengthens our sense of meaning and connectedness.  We realize that we all are strugglers. I am a fellow struggle with every other human struggler on the planet.  We are all just trying to find our way and sometimes that way is found through regret. 4. Shows us what we really want in that if we did the opposite of what we regret we would have a sense of fulfillment.  The camera negative   We encourage you to talk about your regrets openly and find the freedom of vulnerability and authenticity.

Regret is one of our most powerful feelings and regrettably one of the most misunderstood. Regret covers a myriad of circumstances from wishing we would have eaten oatmeal instead of the cinnamon danish this morning for breakfast to feeling remorse for not telling a loved one how much we loved them before they died. The Four Categories of Regret: 1. Foundational Regrets - did not make choices that give enough stability and security Not saving enough money or not paying attention to health. “If only I had more…” 2. Boldness Regrets - did not take a chance on doing something I should have Starting a business, not asking someone out, not speaking up “If only took a risk …” People who took risks and failed still were glad they took the risk because it taught them something 3. Moral Regret - did something they should not have or did not do something they should have Affairs, bullying, stealing, cheating “If I had that decision back I would have…” 4. Connection Regrets - did not stay in touch and as a result we drifted apart. Disassociated with family and/or friends “If I would have stayed connected to…” It is not too late to reach out and awkwardness is most often rewarding to those who take the initiative.

(12:05)Four Categories of Regret. Through his research, Daniel found four core regrets. foundational regrets are about stability, often related to finances or health. Boldness regrets are about taking chances, like traveling or starting a business. Moral regrets are about doing the right thing. Lastly, connection regrets are related to the loss of relationships. The most common regrets are connection regrets. (17:08)How Leaders Can Use Regret. Daniel encourages leaders to share their regrets and mistakes. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Four categories of effective altruism critiques, published by jtm on April 9, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. When discussing critiques of effective altruism, I often find that lots of different kinds of critiques are lumped together, which can lead to people talking past each other. Here's an attempt at categorising different things one might focus on – I'm not sure the categories are exhaustive and I also welcome suggestions for refined categorisations. Four categories of critiques Normative assumptions & moral values This includes the philosophical underpinnings of effective altruism, including (but not limited to) claims about what is valuable and what people ought to do. Empirical assumptions & theories of change This includes beliefs about empirical questions like "How likely is human extinction this century?" or "What is the most cost-effective way of improving human health?" It also includes worldviews or theories of change, like "Positive societal change is more likely to be gradual than radical" or "Positive societal change is more likely to be driven by elites than by large movements." Institutions & organisations in the effective altruism social movement This includes both institutions in the broad sense of the word, such as how hiring practices or how strategic decisions for the social movement are made. It also includes questions pertaining to specific organisations, such as how transparent a particular funder is or how much an organisation achieved in the past year. Social norms & practices in the effective altruism community This includes things about the community aspect of effective altruism, i.e. the ways that people in the movement interact not just as colleagues, but also as friends, partners, housemates, and subscribers to a shared ideology. Topics to explore could include how people interact with those outside the movement, the effects of talking about money in a certain way, or the causes and effects of demographic and intellectual homogeneity. Examples in each category I also include below some examples of existing work in each category, though each list is thoroughly non-exhaustive. Also, I'm sure that some of the examples could fit into more than one category; I tried placing them in the category they seemed to represent the most. For several of these examples, I haven't read them in their entirety; some I've only barely skimmed. For each, I'm sure there are things I don't agree with, just as there is something in every one of these that I do agree with. You'll note that these aren't sweeping critiques of effective altruism or longtermism as a whole, they are rather critical assessments of specific aspects (although those would also be interesting). I personally find that while both "we should use evidence and reason to do the most good" (effective altruism) and "positively influencing the longterm future is a key moral priority of our time" (longtermism) are rather unobjectionable as general claims, the way they are practised could be better, hence the value of critiques. I would love to see more examples – please post your favourites in the comments! Normative assumptions & moral values Xuan: AI Alignment, Philosophical Pluralism, and the Relevance of Non-Western Philosophy Unruh: Constraining longtermism (Working paper, likely available upon request) Mogensen: The only ethical argument for positive

Have you ever the story or parable of the sower? It comes from Mark 4:9-20 and talks about those are four categories of "hearing", which are: 1. Seed along the path: the person who hears, but absolutely nothing changes? 2. Seed on rocky ground: the person who hears and is all excited until trouble and challenges come? 3. Seed among thorns: the person who hears, but worry, greed, and deception gets the best of him? 4. Seed on good ground: the person who hears and accepts what he hears, and who produces great things in his life and the life of others? Which one are you? Having enriching, fulfilling relationships is critical when it comes to performance. But the time and attention we invest in our relationships pale in comparison to the focus we give to our work, our hobbies, or even entertainment. Guest Darya Haitoglou shares the strategic steps we can take to erase the early relationship programming we adopted from our parents and how we can repattern our relationship abilities with a relationship blueprint. Find the show notes here — DecodingSuperhuman.com/Darya   “We are not taught how to make relationships work. We are generally led by our models of the families we come from, from Mommy and Daddy, and they are not always very helpful, you know, functional. So, we need somebody who walks us through and creates a new, re-patterns our blueprint and creates a new blueprint of relationships.”   Who is Darya Haitoglou? A psychologist and a relationship coach, Darya began her career managing international consumer brands for Procter & Gamble in the UK, moved on to become a human resources manager and eventually became the HR Talent leader for the P&G Geneva hub. She quit her lucrative corporate job in Switzerland to move back to the UK and focus on helping transform people’s life and work.   With more than ten years of coaching and talent management experience, Darya is the author of a best-selling Enrich Your Relationships book, she also writes for the Huffington Post and has been on BBC morning and evening radio shows.   She holds a First Class Honours in Economics, Bachelor’s in Psychology, Masters’ with Distinction in International Relations and holds a Masters’ of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge. Darya is a certified trainers’ trainer in NLP, professional certified coach (PCC) from the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and strategic interventions for personal and business growth. Working across different countries and speaking five languages, as well as being a mother of two, she is valued for her skills in helping leaders enrich relationships and build successful and meaningful businesses through focusing on their personal growth.   What is a Healthy Relationship?   Everybody has a slightly different meaning of what a healthy relationship is. A healthy relationship is one that brings a person fulfillment and happiness and serves as the foundation of success in life.   Having a relationship blueprint that works for both parties is the first step towards a healthy relationship because the hardest part of our lives is to be in a relationship.   Key Highlights of the discussion with Darya Haitoglou: Top Issues Superhumans have in Relationships [7:09] What is a Relationship Blueprint? Hi there folks! Creatives Meet Business is an event and podcast series based out of Austin, Texas for creatives of ALL disciplines to get from zero to one in thinking of themselves as business owners (in the creative sector). This episode features Jon Lebkowsky, founder and CEO of Polycot Associates. Jon is a fascinating fellow and is beyond knowledgable about all things web and development (and on ALL things internet).  Jon shares about the different types of platforms out there (and the difference between them) and what questions you should be thinking about if you're ready to work with a developer. Because there's so so much that's exciting about this episode - let's hop in and hear what Jon has to say! 0:00 to 2:16 - Ashland Opening Remarks and Intro of Jon Lebkowsky 2:20 to 5:23 - Four Categories of Platforms   Hosted Service - examples include Squarespace, Wix, Tumblr Light Content Management System - you arrange the hosting yourself. WordPress is an example. Note - WordPress does have a hosted version, but Jon is talking about the software, not the service. More Complex Content Management Frameworks. An example is Drupal Web Application Development Frameworks - Ruby on Rails is an example. Basecamp is an example of a site built with Ruby on Rails Rails is good for rapid prototyping and web application development 5:24 to 7:11 - Web Development is less about building from scratch and more about re-tooling to increase and customize functionality. Two ways to extend functionality: Themes, free or purchase - configure to customize based on needs Additional functionality that's not in the core platform: WordPress - plug-ins Drupal - modules Be careful of the plug-ins or modules you attach to your site as they increase complexity to site and potential for conflicts. There could be security flaws with the plug-ins or modules, so be cautious. 7:12 to 11:32 - Questions to Ask When Decided on a Platform What are you trying to do and who are you trying to reach with the platform? Brochure sites - basic information Considered Purchase site - informative, repeat traffic from same visitor Information site or portal - very information dense E-commerce site - can be simple or complex Web application - application that's served over the web (Basecamp is an example) How are you going to choose a developer? If you have someone in mind, get to know their platform proficiency. Recommended to get developer first and include them in the conversation about platform selection that will work for your project How much can you afford to spend? How much are you willing to spend for ongoing maintenance? How often will your website and content change? 11:36 to 12:36 - Content Management System For Self-Maintenance  Open source allowed more freedom for customers to change  developers, no longer locked into a developer if the client was dissatisfied  12:37 to 13:57 - Ashland Closing Remarks If you like what you hear, share the podcast with your friends, rate and review.
