2025 BBWAA HOF Ballot Happy New Year! It's once again time to talk about the Hall of Fame, this time the writers' ballot. There are plenty of worthy candidates returning to the ballot, and two standout first year candidates to watch. Japanese icon Ichiro Suzuki is a lock for induction this year. Although he didn't debut until he was 27, the spry savant amassed over 3,000 hits, 1,400 runs, 10 All-Stars and Gold Gloves, not to mention two batting titles, a Rookie of the Year, and a MVP. He also holds the single season hit record, with 262 in the 2004 season. Although not the first Japanese player in MLB, his smashing success paved the way for other Japanese stars such as Hideki Matsui, Yu Darvish, and Shohei Ohtani. The only question about Ichiro is whether or not he'll be unanimous. Don't sleep on ace lefty C.C. Sabathia's chances on his debut ballot. As one of just three left handed pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts (Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson the other two), Sabathia was the definition of a workhorse. Add in 250 wins, a Cy Young, a World Series, and an ALCS MVP, and you've got a Hall of Famer, especially in this era. Among the other first-year candidates, there are a few who could survive the 5% threshold to remain on ballot for another year. Félix Hernández was one of the most dominant starters in baseball from 2007 - 2015, but that might not be enough for the writers. Dustin Pedroia and Ian Kinsler were both excellent second basemen that frankly lack the longevity needed for enshrinement, but are certainly worthy cases to discuss, particularly on the same ballot as sabermetric darling Chase Utley. Russell Martin and Brian McCann come up short in the traditional counting stats that writers demand from catchers, but their advanced framing metrics put them in similar ranks as Joe Mauer, Buster Posey, and Yadier Molina. Of the returning candidates, Billy Wagner came up just short last year (73.8%), and he will need a push to get over in his final year on the ballot. In his second to last year, Andruw Jones appears to be stalling around 60% of the vote, not far off from induction, but not close enough to be confident he'll make it this year or the next. Carlos Beltrán and Chase Utley appear to be on track for induction in a few years time, though they'll need to continue their growth. AROD, ManRam, and Andy Pettitte would be in the Hall if not for PEDs, and they're not getting in anytime soon. How many will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker for a July celebration? Find out January 21st when the results are announced. November 4, 2009. It's Game 6 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Yankees will clinch the series tonight on the back of one player, Hideki Matsui. He's a baseball player from Japan, one of the few who made the jump across the Pacific to play in America. In the last 15 years, many more Japanese players have made that move, including superstar Shohei Ohtani, arguably the most popular baseball player in the world today. But before Ohtani, before Matsui, there was Masanori Murakami, the first Japanese player to appear in MLB. How did Murakami go from a village outside of Tokyo to pitching in front of tens of thousands in America? And how did an international incident cut his U.S. career short, leading to a 30-year gap before the next Japanese player would arrive in the Major Leagues? Special thanks to Rob Fitts, author of Mashi: The Unfulfilled Baseball Dreams of Masanori Murakami, the First Japanese Major Leaguer; Kerry Yo Nakagawa, founder and director of the Nisei Baseball Research Project; and Michael Clair, writer and senior manager for storytelling and special projects at Major League Baseball. On this episode of the Three-Inning Save podcast, we recap a rough homestand for the Dodgers, who lost three series in a row at Dodger Stadium. There were troubles with runners in scoring position, and especially so with the bases loaded, too many strikeouts for the hitters, and the continued issue of having the bottom of the lineup produce. The bullpen has struggled as well, and the team just hasn't been in sync for the last two weeks or so. Among the positives though last week was Shohei Ohtani passing Hideki Matsui for the most home runs in MLB by a player born in Japan, and the Dodgers had three major league debuts – outfielder Andy Pages, plus pitchers Landon Knack and Ricky Vanasco – all in the same series. Ohtani and the Dodgers say they want to move on and focus on baseball, and Ohtani for the most part has, going on an extra-base barrage that included tying Hideki Matsui for most home runs in major league history by a player born in Japan. We also take stock of the Dodgers pitching staff with Bobby Miller landing on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, and Walker Buehler nearing a return from his rehab assignment (even though Buehler took a ball off his middle finger in his last minor league start). 10-25-2022 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by laughing at the fact that University of Texas Football Head Coach Steve Sarkisian had to apologize for not signing the school's Texas song after following their loss to Oklahoma State. He then cuts into the fact that it would have not been an issue had the team won. This launches him into his rant about the under respecting of the basic win or loss when it comes to the teams we root for. Win and loss is too basic for most, we need to tell the public we (the media and fans) are much smarter than anybody who thinks, simply, : the team that wins is good and the team that looses is bad. John claims that is all it is. He talks about the NY Football Giants great start and how everybody believes it all about the coach. He asks you if you feel the same way if the Giants lose their next five? (This is not a prediction, just a question.) He then talks about the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears and asks if you would be still down on the Denver coach if they won their next five? Would you believe the Bears are still headed in the right direction if they shit the bed next week? He then finishes off his point by discussing the careers of Hall of Fame Baseball managers Casey Stengel and Joe Torre. Finally, he advocates a Bruce Bochy/ Jacob deGrom combo in Texas (providing Jake really wants out of New York) and why Hideki Matsui belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Topic: LeBron James Laughs at Your ‘Old' Lakers Memes. After His Nap.   LeBron James has seen the memes and read the punch lines. “The narrative about our age,” he said, “I kind of laugh at it. I actually do really laugh. I'm not just saying that.” The Los Angeles Lakers are old. They are the NBA's Traveling Wilburys, an aging rock star collective hoping to produce one more chart-topping album. Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan have more mileage between them than a 2003 Honda Civic. Carmelo Anthony, 37, recalled first getting to know James, 36, when they were high school standouts — way back in the previous millennium. At 32, Russell Westbrook is comparatively spry. “I don't think it's going to be like peanut butter and jelly to start the season,” James told reporters ahead of training camp. “But that's all part of the process.” In his own small way, James reinvented himself, too, by slightly slimming down at this august stage of his career. “He's made the decision to come back a little bit leaner,” Rob Pelinka, the team's general manager, said. “And I think that's going to translate in his explosiveness and his quickness.” Westbrook, a former league MVP, spent last season with the Washington Wizards before he was traded to the Lakers in August. Westbrook called it a “blessing” to be playing in Los Angeles, where he grew up. “I think it's because we both understand and know what it takes in order to win, and obviously LeBron knows what it takes to get to that next level,” Westbrook said. But the aging process is undefeated, and there are obvious concerns about the Lakers' durability. James, so indestructible for much of his career, has been hampered by injuries in recent years, and Davis limped through the team's abridged playoff appearance last season. For his part, Pelinka sought to downplay the suggestion that the Lakers were brittle by citing the example of Tom Brady, who, at 44, is still quarterbacking football teams to Super Bowls. Amid the doubts and the questions about the Lakers, Anthony can make out a path that leads to a championship ring, which would be his first. There were moments in his career, he said, when he considered the possibility of teaming up with James, one of his closest friends. The opportunity never materialized. Perhaps neither player was ready for that to happen, Anthony said. “But here we are now,” he said. “Timing is everything.” Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/5820559   Next Article   Topic: Tom Daley knits away in between dives at Tokyo Olympics   Tom Daley's way of relaxing between dives off the 10-meter tower at the Olympics keeps him in stitches. Early this month, he made history by hitting his 30th homer of the season to break the record by legendary Babe Ruth, who hit 29 homers as a two-way player during the 1919 season. On July 5, Ohtani hit his 31st homer of the season on his 27th birthday to tie Hideki Matsui's record for most homers in an MLB season by a Japanese-born player. “It makes me happy that I've matched a player I've looked up to since I was little,” Ohtani said. The once-in-a-century player later broke the record with 33 homers, and is ready to dash more records in baseball. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/07/14/2003760791   Next Article:   Topic: Choo Shin-soo becomes latest Korean big leaguer to come home Choo Shin-soo, a former All-Star outfielder for the Texas Rangers, signed a 2.7 billion contract to play for the SK Wyverns, which will soon be taken over by the retailer Shinsegae Group. Following a 16-year big league career, Choo immediately becomes the highest-paid player in Korea Baseball Organization history. The once-in-a-century player later broke the record with 33 homers, and is ready to dash more records in baseball. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/07/14/2003760791   Next Article:   Choo Shin-soo becomes latest Korean big leaguer to come home Choo Shin-soo, a former All-Star outfielder for the Texas Rangers, signed a 2.7 billion contract to play for the SK Wyverns, which will soon be taken over by the retailer Shinsegae Group. Following a 16-year big league career, Choo immediately becomes the highest-paid player in Korea Baseball Organization history. It's not even the All-Star break yet, but Shohei Ohtani has topped Hideki Matsui's record for the most home runs hit by a Japanese-born player. It won't count in the official record book, but the Rays threw a combined seven-inning no-hitter. The Marlins beat the Dodgers yet again with more late-game heroics. Akil Baddoo is quietly putting together a fine rookie season. All this (and more) on today's episode.

11-13-2018 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the show by talking about the recently announced Rookie of the Year Award in MLB- particularly, the AL and winner Shohei Ohtani. John blasts the criticism of people who look at Ohtani in the same way Ichiro, Hideki Matsui, Hideo Nomo, and others were judged when they all came from Japan with many years of professional experience. Ohtani bypassed that, and the financial benefits of remaining in Japan to play for the league minimum in MLB. In addition, he proved to be a true two-way playing MLB pitcher, something the game had not seen since Babe Ruth. John segues that into the mental barrier fans put on themselves when it comes to the knowledge of the sport they "support." In other words, fans put the knowledge of their favorite team over that of the sport, making them biased towards their team. In 2018, it is very ignorant for a fan to ignore the information on sports that is at their fingertips. That judgement clouded some Yankees' fans evaluation of Miguel Andujar against that of Ohtani. John then puts a list together of the ten worst quarterbacks in the (recent) history of the NFL in honor of the just released Nathan Peterman. Finally, some homage is paid to the life of Stan Lee, the founder of Marvel Comics- with a comparison made to Sy Berger, the founder of Topps Baseball Cards.
