But if time freedom is a priority for you, and you’re willing to take action, you absolutely CAN break out of the rat race and replace your W-2 income with multifamily real estate. Jenny Gou and Steven Louie are the Cofounders of Vertical Street Ventures, a multifamily investment firm dedicated to helping people achieve financial freedom through passive investing in real estate. All around us, businesses are changing due to COVID-19.  The pandemic is forcing us to pivot, to really take a look at ourselves, reflect, and ask what can be a pretty scary question: ‘Why am I doing what I’m doing?’ Jenny Gaither, our guest for today, is no different. Like so many women we know and admire, Jenny wears many hats — she’s a business and life coach, a SoulCycle instructor, and the founder of ‘The Movemeant Foundation’ - a non-profit organization that uses the power of movement to teach young girls to be more comfortable in their own bodies.  And like many business owners, Jenny has had to move her business entirely online (she now works out of her small apartment in NYC’s Upper East Side) and restructure all her carefully planned goals.  Most of The Movemeant Foundation’s work was based in schools, because Jenny wanted to reach girls early. After COVID-19, The Movemeant Foundation has had to pivot to really focus on the backbone of the organization, its instructors. Instructors have been struggling to pay rent and find the resources they need to fully digitize their offers. Sounds familiar?  We spoke about what these pivots mean for the industry and whether digital is going to become the new normal. While business owners (and some of the newer members of our audience) are struggling, this week, our goal is to remind you that this struggle is temporary.  If you’re ready to hear Jenny’s insight into where the industry is headed and what this means for business owners, as well her own journey with body positivity and perspectives on movement, grab those AirPods, this is a good one.  Here’s a peek at what else you can expect: How Jenny realized the power of movement at age 7 How she built her non-profit from the ground up The impact SoulCycle has had in her life Her relationship with dancing The incredible female team that helped her build her non-profit Her impulse lighting buys RESOURCES The Movemeant Foundation - Website Jenny Gaither - Website Jenny Gaither - Instagram   This Week’s Joy: Jenny’s history with dancing is complicated. She fell in love with it at age 7 and fell away from it when the visual aspect of dance took a toll on her mentally, leading to a bad eating disorder and a fractured relationship with her body.  Now that she has learnt to fully embrace her body, one of her greatest joys has been embracing dance again! This Week’s Hustle: Studios are being set up in people’s bedrooms with enough lighting equipment to rival an indie film set. [00:10:05] Which integrated services do PR firms need the most?[00:11:29] Why Jenny left Brands2Life to move to a much smaller firm, Babel. [00:15:03] What is Babel’s sphere of work? [00:16:26] Are we in danger of overcomplicating the talent issue in public relations – don't employees of PR firms just want to do enjoyable work for clients they care about?[00:19:00] Why Jenny thinks the PR sector is still behind other sectors with flexible working.[00:19:15] Jenny talks about Anna Whitehouse's Flex Appeal approach to flexible working. Today’s conversation is with Jennifer Wallace, a wonderful expositor to the main ideas of value investing, but also a very deep thinker when it comes to the interaction of value investing and the market at large. Jenny is the co-founder of Summit Street Capital Management, where she is the portfolio manager of the US equity value fund. She's also a Columbian through and through as she holds a BA from Columbia College and an MBA from Columbia Business School. Jenny is a member of the advisory board of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing and a great mentor to me. While working towards her MBA, Jenny joined the first cohort of students to take the value investing class offered by Bruce Greenwald. After being introduced to value investing, it became clear to Jenny that to be successful she needed to develop a skill set that would allow her to assess businesses, independent of conventional wisdom. To gain that perspective, she first went to work for McKinsey & Company. After leaving McKinsey, Jenny worked alongside investing legend Bob Bruce, before ultimately co-founding her firm. On this episode, Jenny and I discuss her studies at Columbia Business School as a student in the first cohort of the value investing class, her early career with value investing legends, how Summit Street was started, how Jenny developed her investment philosophy, her approach to data analysis, the impact of the growth of the passive investing industry on active managers, and so much more!    Key Topics:  The events program for the Heilbrunn Center during the 2019/2020 academic year (1:03) Why you should sign up for the center’s email newsletter (6:15) Jenny’s experience as a student in the first cohort of the value investing class (8:26) The structure of the first value investing class (10:20) Why Jenny decided to work for McKinsey instead of in investing (11:33) How Jenny’s background in psychology helps her as a value investor (12:56) The impact of Jenny’s time at McKinsey (13:28) Summit Street’s investment philosophy (15:42) How business’ operational efficiency contributes to investors’ downside projection (16:37) Bob Bruce’s pitch to Jenny (17:23) The importance of being able to read financials and let the numbers tell you a story (19:20) Bob Bruce’s advice on building up your knowledge about select companies (21:12) The opportunities and crises in the late 1990s market (22:25) The parallels between the investment landscape of the 1990s and now (24:19) The qualities that Jenny believes sets value investors apart from others (25:37) Why Jenny thinks being a good value investor starts with a certain type of person (27:23) How Summit Street was launched (28:32) The evolving focus of Summit Street (29:13) Jenny’s approach to data analysis and searching for investment ideas (32:47) Jenny’s perspective on the changing significance of classic value metrics (34:41) How Jenny use cash flow as a valuation metric to avoid value traps (37:29) Why you should focus on the numbers in assessing the management team of a potential investment (42:26) “Every stock that we buy has something working against it” (44:23) Why Jenny considers leverage and return on invested capital as critical quality measurements (46:17) Summit Street’s qualitative and quantitative valuation methodology (49:25) Summit Street’s research and evaluation process for potential investments (52:53) Why models are so useful for testing your assumptions (55:36) Jenny’s approach to exiting a position (58:59) The importance of using guardrails to force investment discipline (1:02:35) Jenny’s opinion on the growth of passive investing and its effect on the practice of value investing (1:05:29) Why Jenny believes that the fee race to the bottom for exchange-traded fund (ETF) products are not necessarily good for investors (1:09:25) The façade of diversity being offered by ETFs (1:10:45) The opportunities created by ETFs for active managers by ETFs (1:16:11) And much more!    Mentioned in this Episode: Meredith Trivedi, Managing Director, Heilbrunn Center for Graham and Dodd Investing The Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing Events Summit Street Capital Management Benjamin Graham and David L. In today’s episode of the 40 Minute Mentor, I’m joined by founder and CEO of Rubies in the Rubble, Jenny Costa. Having started her career in finance, Jenny soon realised there was a bigger cause she felt passionate about. After reading that one third of all food produced globally is wasted, she knew she had to see it with her own eyes. So, one morning she decided to visit the New Covent Garden wholesale fruit and veg market. Her visit ended with her cycling back with baskets full of perfectly good and yet unsold produce. Produce that would have otherwise gone to landfill. That’s how Rubies in the Rubble, the UK’s leading ‘anti food waste’ brand, was founded. In 2011 Jenny started making and selling chutneys, made of produce saved from the rubbish heap. Having started with a single stall on Borough Market, Rubies in the Rubble now stocks their delicious jams, relishes, chutneys, ketchups and other condiments at major retailers, such as Waitrose, Ocado, Whole Foods and a large number of independent stores. In my conversation with Jenny, we cover some really interesting topics including: - How Jenny took the leap from a lucrative career in investment management to selling home-made chutneys on Borough Market. - Jenny’s key learnings as she’s taken Rubies from a single market stall to a rapidly growing business with products on the shelves of supermarkets up and down the country. - And Jenny’s advice to fellow entrepreneurs on growing a team, building a successful culture and her approach to work life balance. I loved chatting to Jenny about Rubies in the Rubble and hearing how her team are disrupting the food industry with their amazing products. It was fascinating to hear her advice on how we can all help do our part to tackling the problem of food waste and how her team are setting the tone for it. It has certainly changed my view on the importance I place on the appearance of the fresh produce I buy, and hopefully my conversation with Jenny will inspire you to follow in her footsteps and reduce your own food waste too. You can pursue a traditional career and yet still approach it in a unique way, making it your own, and that is the basis for today's interview. Prior to crafting her own career path, Jenny Dorsey was a management consultant in the fashion industry and went on to become the youngest MBA candidate in Columbia Business School. But it was then during a sabbatical between leaving her job and moving onto business school that she decided to enroll in cooking school. At the time, cooking was nothing more than a hobby and something she pursued purely out of her passion for food. Once she went back to her original path of business school, she realized something had changed and it no longer aligned with her. This lead to her final decision to pursue food instead. Throughout her journey in the culinary world, she worked both traditional and un-traditional kitchen jobs that eventually lead her to where she is today. Currently, Jenny is a professional chef, author, and artist specializing in multi-platform fusing food with social good. She uses cooking as a way to facilitate conversations about topics like race, privilege, and politics. She leads a nonprofit studio, Studio ATAO, is the co-host of Why Food? podcast on Heritage Radio Network, and runs a popular popup series named Wednesdays. Jenny's story is so inspiring because she could have easily taken the traditional route with her cooking career. She could have become a chef and considered that the end goal, but she didn't. Instead, she found a way to think outside of the box and combine all of her passions into a fulfilling career.   Here is what we chat about in this episode: How there are many ways to do something. That it's normal to feel panicked when you don't know where your path is headed. Why you shouldn't do something just because you're good at it. How Jenny combines food and conversations about social topics. And so much more! “All you've got to do is plant that seed in your mind, care for it, work steadily toward your goal, and it will become a reality. It not only will, there's no way that it cannot.”~Earl Nightingale Jenny Butchart started small. With a young family she had little time for outside interests. Even though she had chosen family over a prestigious art scholarship in Paris, she decided not to  bury her artistic gifts but to develop them in her own backyard. Bringing her children along with her, Jenny built relationships while building on her strengths and through diligence and patience, a lush and inspiring garden was created that has become a Canadian National Historical Site visited by over 1 million people each year.  Jenny shows us, as mothers, that we all have gifts we can develop while we continue to put motherhood first. And as we set that example for our children, we create a legacy of growth and giving! Like Jenny we can start where we are by planting one small seed and then another, and as we do, we bring  joy to ourselves and those around us by producing our own abundant "garden." Listener's Guide: Use the time stamps below to skip to any part of the podcast.  0:58  The story of Jenny Butchart and her garden 6:22  The sunken garden 10:31  How Jenny's passion project influenced others 12:52  A family legacy 15:34  A mindset for mothers 18:38  Gardening and the mind 24:06  A family's best investment:  the education of the mother Quotes from this episode: “Man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth.  If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed-seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind.  Just as a gardener cultivates his plot, keeping it free from weeds, and growing the flowers and fruits which he requires, so may a man tend the garden of his mind, weeding out all the wrong, useless, and impure thoughts, and cultivating toward perfection the flowers and fruits of right, useful, and pure thoughts.  By pursuing this process, a man sooner or later discovers that he is the master-gardener of his soul, the director of his life.  He also reveals, within himself, the laws of thought, and understands, with ever-increasing accuracy, how the thought-forces and mind elements operate in the shaping of his character, circumstances, and destiny.” ~James Allen “Now it stands to reason that a person who is thinking about a concrete and worthwhile goal is going to reach it, because that's what he is thinking about and we become what we think about.  Conversely, the man who has no goal, who doesn't know where he is going, and whose thoughts must therefore be thoughts of confusion and anxiety and fear and worry, becomes what he thinks about. One's life becomes one of frustration, fear, anxiety and worry. And if he thinks about nothing, he becomes nothing.” ~Earl Nightingale “All you've got to do is plant that seed in your mind, care for it, work steadily toward your goal, and it will become a reality.  It not only will, there's no way that it cannot. You see, that is a law, like the laws of Sir Isaac Newton, the laws of gravity. If you get on top of a building and jump off, you'll always go down, you'll never go up.  And it is the same with all the other laws of nature.  They always work.  They're inflexible.” ~Earl Nightingale “Stories like this are just amazing because [Jenny Butchart's talent] nurtured her, it nurtured her family, and it nurtured her community and now it's a blessing to the world.  But it didn't start out that way.  It started out as a small and simple thing.  But it started out, especially, with a mindset.  It started out with how Jenny saw herself and how she saw her talents.  She chose family, but she didn't give up on herself.  And she didn't say to herself, “Well my time is past.

Kick off your new year by trading in fear for creativity and comparison for curiosity. In episode 5 of season 3 of the Fearless Self-Love Podcast, I interview artist, teacher, and creative coach, Jenny Bevill. Jenny’s career and personal life have taught her time and again how healing and essential creativity is, not just for artists, but for everyone. “Everybody wants to be creative,” she says. The problem is, we often feel we’re not good enough or don’t have certain skills. Listen in for tricks to peak your own curiosity and ultimately bolster your own creativity.     How fear prevents us from being creative Why curiosity is the basis of creativity How to use your own personal connection to cultivate creativity   Links Mentioned: Reggio Emilia  https://www.reggioalliance.org/ Kylin O’Brien https://www.kylinobrien.net/ Kylin O’Brien Interview Season 1 Episode 19 https://www.groundedhere.com/season-1 Jamie Wyman https://www.jamiewymanmusic.com/ Jamie Wyman Interview Season 1 Episode 22  https://www.groundedhere.com/season-1 Kiki Smith’s Wolf Girl https://www.artnet.com/auctions/artists/kiki-smith/wolf-girl Jenny’s Website: https://jennybevillcreative.com/ Show Highlights:   01:29 Easeful Living Practice ~ Reggio Emilia’s Emotional Continuum 13:25 Interview with Jenny Bevill begins! Jennifer Morgan is the brains behind A Fresh Bunch, a creative licensing agency where designers and clients collaborate and create something big together. Jenny began her journey into creative licensing in 2002 when she founded Hen and Barley Press, her own successful wholesale stationery business focused on personalized stationery goods.   Jennifer soon realized just how much of her time was spent on everything in her business except design, and discovered many other creative people in the industry were burnt out just like her. Inspired by the opportunity to bring designers and clients together, Jenny founded A Fresh Bunch in 2010.   On today’s episode, Jenny shares how she shifted away from wholesale manufacturing and into creative licensing. She talks about misconceptions that artists have about licensing and provides overview of how licensing works, who it is for, and how a licensing agency, like A Fresh Bunch can help artists diversify their revenue streams.   ON TODAY’S EPISODE: How Jenny pivoted her business from wholesale to licensing Her steps to learning about the licensing industry Knowing when to embrace quitting as a strategy for future growth The benefits of collaborating with an agency How Jenny chooses artists to represent Tips and pointers on how to create a strong and consistent portfolio   The best time to submit your artist application to A Fresh Bunch How royalties and compensation structures typically work What projects Jenny is most proud of Upcoming Blueprint Shows What’s next for A Fresh Bunch KEY TAKE-AWAYS: “Back in the day when there was no SP inkjet, printing was still kind of picking off. Digital printing was not even a thing and really the only way to get product out into the world was to manufacture it yourself.” - Jennifer Morgan “ I think at that time, other stationery designers and I we're all kind of scratching our heads trying to figure out, well what do we do now?” - Jennifer Morgan “Once A Fresh Bunch found its footing as licensing brand and fit for the artists working under the A Fresh Bunch umbrella, the decision to shut down Hen And Barley Press felt very easy.” - Jennifer Morgan “I could not have started A Fresh Bunch without having had the experience I had and making the contacts I did with Hen And Barley press.” - Jennifer Morgan “If I could do anything over again, it would probably be that I would have embraced the notion of quitting as a strategy much sooner than I did.” - Jennifer Morgan “It's really about consistency and discipline as much as anything else.” - Jennifer Morgan “In theory you should be pitching to somebody at a time when they are looking for that art, when you're kind of new to the industry, it's hard to know when that is. ” - Jennifer Morgan “We're always looking for a really unique style, a unique voice, a consistent style.” - Jennifer Morgan “We try to provide like checklists and best practices, things that we know from experience have made artists successful.” - Jennifer Morgan “I am super proud of our artist's ability from all these points around the world, to collaborate online with each other to create a diverse collection of looks that is still cohesive.” - Jennifer Morgan “As with anything at a certain point that often comes down to making the difficult choice of, ‘What I'm going to be When I grow up, am I going to be a licensed artist or am I going to run a company?’” - Jennifer Morgan   CONNECT WITH JENNIFER MORGAN Website:  http://www.afreshbunch.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/freshbunch Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/afreshbunch/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/freshbunch/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/freshbunch   SPECIAL OFFER:  3 Free Months of Gusto! Money. The very thought of it can make people squirm in the seats. The word alone has the power to conjure up feelings of anger, jealousy, despair, excitement, fear, anxiety, and gratitude. The good news is, money doesn't have to be a dirty word. And our relationship to it can truly be life-changing. Which is why I'm so excited to be sitting down with my good friend Jenny Karlsson, the brilliant mind behind Financials for Creatives. Jenny is, in my estimation, the perfect combination of left and right brain, with a love for both photography and numbers. Our conversation is a candid one and focuses on both the practical and softer sides of money. We talk money mindset and how the stories we carry around money, success, and work really impact our relationship with money. We also explore how Jenny uses tarot and crystals to support her work, as well as the more traditional approaches like budgeting, spending plans, and YNAB. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I have and that it gives you plenty of food for thought when it comes to your personal relationship with money. I’d love to hear from you! What stood out most from Jenny’s interview? How can you begin to shift your relationship with money by embracing some of the tools Jenny shared? Topics Discussed: An introduction to Jenny Karlsson and the work she does through Financials for Creatives Where Jenny's love for numbers came from The problem with looking left to right versus inside when it comes to money Money as a data point and how to make sure your spending and your values are in alignment Money blocks, self-worth, and how those things relate to our feelings about money The stories that we have told ourselves over the years about money and how they've impacted our lives Why having a coach is a godsend when it comes to working through our money "stuff" How Jenny uses non-traditional tools like tarot and crystals to address money issues Having a JOY budget and setting aside money for the things that bring you joy Using crystals to help support your money goals Why Jenny loves and recommends You Need A Budget What everyday magic looks and feels like to Jenny Resource Links: Connect with Jenny Karlsson online: Website | Instagram | Pinterest Profit First* by Mike Michalowicz Sacred Creators Oracle by Chris-Anne Donnelly You Need A Budget (YNAB) Morning Pages by Julia Cameron Hit me up: Twitter: @emilylevenson and #somekindofmagic Instagram: @emilylevenson and #somekindofmagic FB Page: Emily Levenson Pinterest: Emily Levenson

Cass Midgley interviews Jenny Q. Unfortunately Bob's not with us on today's episode.  Jenny Q was born in Southern California to Palestinian immigrants. Her love of herbs began in her teens while on the road following the Grateful Dead. She has set her roots in Joshua Tree, California, where she opened Grateful Desert, a local apothecary. In 2014, Jenny suddenly became seriously ill and rapidly descended into a coma with slender chance of survival.  She has quite a story and put it in a book entitled "Held Together" which incorporates many of her friends who bore witness to the experience. The book releases June 1st. Here's what one reviewer said of Jenny's book: “Held Together” tells a villages account of a personal tragedy. While seemingly detailing the medical marvel that left Jenny with both of her legs and five fingers amputated, the book truly centers around the power of community and the strength people find in a time of tragedy." This is what drew my interest in Jenny's story: it's testament to the power of community and the determination of the human spirit. So often when tragedy strikes, people either blame god or spin it around to make god look good in spite of it. As humanists and atheists, we avoid both of those silly explanations and just get busy helping remedy it. How Jenny's friends rallied around her to mitigate the suffering and hardship of the tragedy, while beautiful in it's own way, is not unique to Jenny's situation. Many, if not all, of us have witnessed friends and family descend on a problem with love and care when one of our own goes down.  And yes, I have an agenda to assign credit where it belongs--even when it happens in church settings--the credit, and glory, if you will, goes to humans. Loving, caring, compassionate, and godless human beings. Spoiler alert, Jenny survived the sepsis that nearly took her life, and today she joyously shares her life with her tight-knit desert community, her beloveds Yazzy, her daughter and Myshkin, her wife. Jenny's story raises the question, "what is spirituality?" I recently read a book that I highly recommend titled Living the Examined Life: Wisdom for the Second Half of the Journey, by James Hollis. And before we get into my talk with Jenny I'd like to play a clip from it. So here's my talk with Jenny Q. If you connect with her and would like to correspond with her, get the book, or talk about herbs and essential oils, her email is connect@heldtogetherbook.com , her website is www.heldtogetherbook.com, and the website for her herbal business is gratefuldesert.com We taped this conversation on April 29th, 2018.We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. But I know how much work goes into producing anything physical - there's no undo button, you can't just go and restore a backup you made earlier. Plus there's the added challenge that makers and crafters face when selling their work at markets and craft shows and such - I did a bit of this but the introvert in me had a hard time with being around so many people all day long. Am I in the "right" relationship? How do I find my soulmate? Are we truly compatible? Many people show up for dating coaching, life coaching or even marriage counseling with a lot of angst around these unanswered questions. People who are dating can wonder if they've found "the one." Premarital couples sometimes worry whether they're compatible enough to get married. And even married or long time partnered people can wonder if their relationship issues are due to their being too different. (Or having "perpetual problems" as marriage and family researcher Dr. John Gottman likes to call it). I'm simply glad that people are asking these kinds of relationship questions. After all, who you choose to marry is going to have a greater impact on the quality of your life and your long term happiness than just about anything else. And it's also true that everyone is a mixed bag, with aspects to them that are both delightful and frustrating as all get out. So how do you determine what is a relationship red flag, or sign that you're fundamentally incompatible? How to you figure out what differences are okay? When do opposites not just attract, but actually strengthen a partnership? When can you have big differences, and yet still be highly compatible soul mates? The answers might surprise you! On today's episode of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast I'm going to talk through all these questions with you. To do this though, I need to wear three hats. Relationship Compatibility in Marriage First, I'm going to put on my marriage counselor cape hat and talk about the most common culprits that make married couples wonder if they are compatible or not. Listen and learn what (frustrating!) differences might actually be strengths for your relationship, and what differences are harder to overcome. I'll also give you tips for how to build bridges to the center, and appreciate each other for who you are. Want to see an example of this in action? Check out my recent post: "How Jenny and Greg Fixed Their Relationship."  Finding Your Soulmate Next I'm putting on my dating coach  wizard hat to talk about the serious business of finding your soul mate. Dating is all about "auditioning" people and getting to know them over time. I'll share the down low on the biggest mistake I see dating people make, and how it can impair their ability to find a true soul mate. If you are on the dating market, I'll help you understand what's important to look for in a potential partner, and what is NOT as important when you're looking for love. I'm also sharing some practical steps you can take to make sure that you're finding a good match in terms of both character and chemistry. For Premarital Couples Lastly, I'm sharing my advice as a premarital counselor. If you're planning a wedding with some lingering questions on your mind, you'll want to check out the case example I shared about what it looks like when someone is NOT asking the right questions leading up to marriage. The best time to prevent potential pitfalls is before the wedding. It's essential to have serious conversations about your personalities, hopes and dreams, and expectations prior to the "I Do's." Why? First of all, it's enormously helpful to get on the same page and identify potential problems before you're married. But an even bigger reason? Because the one of the most serious red flags for a relationship is not being able to talk through important things respectfully. If you are literally not able to have "Who are we, what do we each want, and how are we going to get on the same page?" conversations together, you might want to slow down. Relationship Compatibility Test One of the resources I talked through on the show is Dr. Helen Fisher's personality test. If you would like to take it for yourself (and / or ask your partner to) you can find it here: http://bit.ly/2cOmEX6. For more information about the ideas behind Dr. Fisher's compatibility quiz and how they impact people in relationships, I highly recommend her book, "Why Him, Why Her."
