On today's action-packed episode, Sean first reacts to Netflix backing out of the bidding for Warner Brothers—clearing the path for a merger with Paramount (2:01). Next, he is joined by Chris Ryan to react to Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio's casting in Michael Mann's ‘Heat 2' and give a general temperature check on the movie (6:36). Then, they cover ‘Scream 7' and preface the conversation by discussing the rumored controversy behind the shuffling cast (16:17) before diving fully into spoilers and exploring the myriad of reasons why they found the film to be deeply unsuccessful (21:57). Later, Sean is joined by Amanda Dobbins and Adam Nayman to discuss one of their favorite movies of the year so far: Matt Johnson's ‘Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.' They talk through why the movie is so hysterical, how its sincerity makes the movie feel moving, and why it became an instant cult classic (49:10). Finally, Sean is joined by Johnson to discuss why he felt he needed to make this movie right now, how having no knowledge of the original series actually makes the movie better, and what he's doing next with ‘Nirvanna the Band the Show' Season 3, as well as his Anthony Bourdain biopic ‘Tony,' starring Dominic Sessa (1:18:45). Jackie and MJ are BACK with another slippy sloppy servin' of SECOND HELPINGS! Up top reminiscing about everyone's favorite 'oldest of 6' Big Sis Kara Klenk from yesterday's episode as we dive into the different sib dynamics eeeeeveryone falls into, then IT'S A BETRAYAL ON LEVELS NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN because Jackie didn't tell MJ she was goin' to a DIRTY PUPPET SHOW CALLED "Puppet Up"! And the BETRAYALS just keep comin' as MJ watched the America's Next Top Model docu-series as instructed by Jackie last week....BUT JACKIE DIDN'T WATCH IT, but that's okay 'cause she was puttin' on an amaaaaazing "Monster Fuckers Against Ice" show. The docu-series just basically sums up as Tyra Banks bein' like Jake from Adventure Time, 'cause she 'didn't know it was wrong.' Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire continue to be weird old men and are hittin' up Lisa Rinna's daughters, BUFFY SIDEBAR - Sarah Michelle Gellar got asked "Fuck, Marry, Kill" with Angel, Riley and Spike and her answer has us questioning EVERYTHING, Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell prove once more we should all know a lot less about each other, but what is NOT TMI is that Amanda Seyfried said she felt "so free" while filming the "Testament of Ann Lee" because she got to wear a prosthetic butthole and merkin, Matthew McConaughey did somethin' SHITTY to Timtim on the set of "Interstellar", and Jackie and MJ round out the show with some "Traitors" chat! Buckle up, because Paul Thomas Anderson's thrilling and wildly original film One Battle After Another is quite the ride. We went in completely blind…and honestly, it made the experience that much better. The movie surprised us at every turn with its dark humor, sharp dialogue, and a plot that feels completely fresh in a world full of reboots and sequels. It brings a perfectly crafted soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood (the guitarist from Radiohead), which set a tone that boosted both the anxiety and absurdity throughout, to the standout performances from a truly talented ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti.Stick around until the end for a round of Movie 20 Questions.Safe travels, nomads.

Few filmmakers have a style as bold, romantic and unmistakable as Baz Luhrmann. From his breakout debut Strictly Ballroom to the glittering spectacle of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the fever-dream energy of Elvis, Luhrmann has built a career on transforming familiar stories into cinematic events. In this episode, he takes us inside one of his most iconic creative decisions: the unforgettable fish tank scene in his 1996 adaptation of Romeo + Juliet - and reveals how that moment came to life. We also explore his latest project, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, a return to Elvis Presley through newly uncovered footage from the legendary Las Vegas residency. Beyond the films, Luhrmann reflects on the journey that shaped him. Raised in Herons Creek, a tiny rural town in New South Wales, Australia, he grew up surrounded by performance and storytelling: his father ran a quirky petrol station and cinema, while his mother owned a dress shop and taught ballroom dancing. We discuss the setbacks that tested him, his unconventional audition process, his enduring creative partnership with his wife and the viral TikTok moment that sent the internet into a frenzy. I hope you enjoy this candid, wide-ranging conversation with one of modern cinema's great showmen. ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 02:28 Creativity as Self‑Medication 05:52 Why Elvis? 09:22 The Romeo + Juliet Fish Tank Origin Story 11:01 Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen: The Accidental Hit 13:56 Failure #1: Losing Instincts, Depression and Finding the Way Back 26:16 Casting Without Auditions: Baz's Workshop Method 27:58 Creating a Fear-Free Room 28:47 The Big Break That Became a Public Flop 30:56 Rebounding with Strictly Ballroom 32:19 Choosing Collaborators 33:36 Marriage and Deep Trust 35:42 Criticism and Staying Humble (Plus the Viral TikTok Moment) 40:38 Future-Focused Filmmaking & Final Reflections

This week on Movie Mistrial, we dive into the wild excess, dizzying ambition, and unrestrained debauchery of Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street. The Wolf of Wall Street is a high-octane blast of filmmaking, powered by Leonardo DiCaprio's ferocious performance and Scorsese's razor-sharp direction. Its electric energy, dark humor, and satirical bite make it an unforgettable ride through the corrupt heart of American capitalism, exposing greed with both style and swagger. While undeniably entertaining, the film's relentless excess and provocative tone have sparked debate. Some argue it glamorizes the very behavior it critiques, and its lengthy runtime can feel indulgent—mirroring the characters' own over-the-top lifestyles.Join us as we break down the madness and morality of The Wolf of Wall Street. Is it a brilliant satire with something to say—or an exercise in cinematic hedonism that gets lost in the party?Connect with us and share your thoughts:Twitter: http://tiny.cc/MistrialTwitter

Nothing says suburban bliss like little neon flags sprouting up across your lawn like a government-sponsored Easter egg hunt. In today's comedy podcast, Rizz spirals (respectfully) over fiber optic lines being marked directly through his beloved Japanese maple, and we ask the real question: do you get a discount if they destroy your yard… or just emotional damage?Things escalate when we break down the now-viral fistfight between fiber optic contractors in Forestell. That's right — two grown men, in high-vis vests, settling a “you're lazy” dispute with haymakers in the middle of a neighborhood already dealing with torn-up lawns and brown faucet water. Is it professional? No. Is it peak blue-collar conflict resolution? Absolutely. And yes, we debate whether they grabbed beers together after. From there, we pivot (hard) into Mr. Clean announcing his retirement after 68 spotless years. Is he headed to Boca? Fire Island? Is this just a marketing stunt? We investigate like the responsible adults we are. Then it's HBO's “Neighbors” — the show that makes you question humanity and your HOA. We break down the most unhinged characters, including doomsday preppers, beach tyrants, cat hoarders, and a man who casually threatens murder before inviting people to a barbecue. It's everything you love about suburban drama without actually having to move.In Crap on Celebrities, we unpack the wild moment at the BAFTAs involving Tourette's, Michael B. Jordan, and a headline nobody saw coming. We also talk Wiz Khalifa's birthday “tradition,” Snooki's health update, and why Leonardo DiCaprio is slowly morphing into Jack Nicholson in real time. It's lawn drama. It's celebrity chaos. It's suburban anxiety with microphones. This daily comedy show continues to prove that no topic is too small — especially if it involves Kentucky bluegrass and potential property destruction. If you love a loud, unfiltered, slightly unhinged comedy podcast that covers weird news, celebrity fails, neighborhood wars, and the kind of conversations that should probably stay off HOA Facebook pages… welcome home. This comedy podcast proudly serves St. Louis and beyond with daily humor, pop culture commentary, and the occasional emotional breakdown over landscaping.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In Christopher Nolan's 2010 blockbuster Inception, Leonardo DiCaprio's protagonist is paid to implant an idea into a target's subconscious. If you look the film up, its genre is listed as being ‘science fiction' - but could that soon have to be revised? Dream engineering is an experimental new field - with scientists, dream researchers and engineers pursuing the goal of influencing our thoughts as we sleep. For some, the idea holds the promise of a bright future, with benefits for our memories, creativity and wellbeing. On the other hand, though, the ethical issues it causes amid the unregulated world of an emerging technology have led to warnings of a future where our very dreams could be for sale. In The Dream Makers, Anand Jagatia investigates the fascinating potential and developing concerns over what the future of dream engineering could hold.

With its bold stylization, pop soundtrack, and provocative sensibility, Emerald Fennell's new Wuthering Heights appeals to a contemporary audience so openly it can't help but call to mind Baz Luhrmann's 1996 adaptation of another literary classic about doomed lovers, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. Fennell citing it as a reference point for her film prompted us to revisit what made Lurhmann's approach so enticing and/or annoying at the time, and consider how its maximalist mix of reverence and irreverence toward the source material — not to mention an ascendant Leonardo DiCaprio in peak heartthrob mode — has turned it into a generation's formative Romeo and Juliet. And Mia wants Holly to explain why there was a barking woman on a leash, and whether the finger-sniffing scene was, actually, in Emily Bronte’s classic novel. This week we're feeling revolutionary as we discuss Paul Thomas Anderson's Oscar darling, ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER fom 2025!We've officially come down with Oscars fever, so this week's episode does double duty as our coverage of the race itself. From OBAA's 13 nominations and SINNERS record-breaking 16, to the joys of ping pong in MARTY SUPREME and the massive snub of our beloved NO OTHER CHOICE, we're covering all of our thoughts on little gold men. This film sees a lot of first-timers to the pod, so we're talking Leonardo Di Caprio's career, Benicio del Toro's beer, Chase Infiniti's fear, Sean Penn's sneer, and how Madonna's web connects them all. And of course we're going down a rabbit hole on Jonny Greenwood's score and the fascism of Nixon and Reagan evolving into the form found in this film.Next time we're heading to the blood rave: join us in watching Wesley Snipes as BLADE (1998)!
A sa sortie, Titanic est le film le plus cher jamais produit, avec un budget de 200 millions de dollars. Pour un tel projet, il faut de grands acteurs. Kate Winslet incarne Rose Dewitt Bukater. "She's a ten to me and that's the part that matters." — Paul EastwickIf it's Valentine's Day, we must be talking about love. Paul Eastwick studies attraction and relationships at UC Davis, and his new book Bonded by Evolution takes aim at the "old science" that treated romance like a competitive market where everyone gets assigned a number. The incels, of course, ran with that research to compound their paranoia about the other sex. Eastwick says they got it wrong—and so, with the exception of Paul Eastwick, did most academics. When two people look at the same photograph and make a hot-or-not judgment, Eastwick explains, they only agree about 65% of the time. After they've known the person for months, agreement drops to barely better than a coin flip. So there isn't any universal hierarchy of desirability. What's real is that some people will think you're an 8 and others will think you're a 3—and that quirky disagreement explains most of what happens in the science of attraction. The problem is that dating apps make everything feel like they're in a market, thereby filtering out the "slow burn" people who need time to grow on you. Eastwick's advice, therefore, is forget swiping, reboot your social networks, throw candle lit dinner parties where nobody knows each other. It's more democratic, it takes longer, and it actually works. Happy V day everyone.About the GuestPaul Eastwick is Professor of Psychology at UC Davis, where he studies attraction and close relationships. He is the author of Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection (2026) and co-host of the podcast Love Factually with Eli Finkel.ReferencesConcepts discussed:● The mating market hypothesis treats attraction like an economic exchange where people are assigned desirability values and seek partners at their "level"—an idea Eastwick argues is far more limited than academics have assumed.● Limerence is the academic term for the intense, obsessive early stage of romantic attraction—what we might call infatuation or passion.● The Dunbar number (~150) represents the cognitive limit on stable social relationships—roughly the size of hunter-gatherer groups where our mating psychology evolved.● Pair bonding emerged in human evolution about two million years ago as brain size increased and children required longer periods of intensive parental investment.● Attachment theory describes the deep bonds that form when we trust someone to have our back, celebrate our successes, and support us through difficulty.Evolution and mating:● Human males became smaller relative to females and lost their sharp canines as women selected for men who were safe around babies—"the evolved male is the good caregiver and good dad."● Unlike gorillas with their harem-style mating, humans shifted toward pair bonding because helpless infants with expanding brains needed investment from both parents.● Polyamory research shows that people can form genuine attachment bonds with multiple partners—trust, wellbeing, and attachment levels match or exceed monogamous couples. Also mentioned:● Eli Finkel is Eastwick's co-host on the Love Factually podcast and author of The All-or-Nothing Marriage.● When Harry Met Sally (1989) depicts "one of the most beautiful friendships on screen," according to Eastwick, and holds up well on the friends-to-lovers pathway.● Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996) was the subject of a recent Love Factually episode—"that MTV style of filmmaking" with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio.● The incel and manosphere communities have taken 1990s attraction research and "run with it in some strange and unjustified ways."About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. Epic in scope and length, deliberately problematic characters, a very distinct aesthetic and a Jonny Greenwood score to give you the jitters: Paul Thomas Anderson's 2025 award-bothering opus is Yosra's pick for this month's Flicking. But do Yosra, Hannah and Mick think Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor deserve the plaudits being heaped upon them? Is One Battle After Another a thriller, a father/daughter film, a black comedy, or a social commentary? Yes to everything. Luke & Corrye sift through all the bananas decisions by Paul Thomas Anderson that makes this an instant classic.
Oscars Month marches forward on We Drink & We Watch Things as we tackle the provocative and high-stakes contender that has everyone talking: Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling political odyssey, One Battle After Another. Far from a traditional war movie, this is a stylish, kinetic look at an underground network of anti-fascist revolutionaries navigating a modern America on the brink. Pour yourself something strong and steady - you're going to need it to keep up with the frantic energy of The French 75.This week, we examine the film's portrayal of resistance, following Leonardo DiCaprio's "Bob" as a former munitions expert forced out of a stoner haze to protect his daughter from a shadow-government cabal. We talk through PTA's decision to blend Thomas Pynchon's psychedelic paranoia with very real contemporary anxieties, specifically focusing on the "Latino Harriet Tubman" operation led by Benicio Del Toro's serene sensei. We also analyze Sean Penn's unsettling turn as the obsessive Colonel Lockjaw and the film's central question: in a world of pervasive surveillance and escalating extremism, is organized rebellion a noble necessity or a cycle of "one battle after another?" If you're keeping up with Mackenzie's Oscar ballot or just love a film that feels like a fever dream of the evening news, this episode is an absolute must-watch. We're blending our technical appreciation for this 35mm powerhouse with our usual casual conversation, making this a truly electrifying entry in our journey toward Hollywood's biggest night. This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. A Raimi Movie™ through and through, the film pays loving homage to revisionist entries in the western canon like Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West and Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter, but also sacrifices some of the thematic potential of the genre's Golden Era in favor of shoot-em-up schlock and a thoroughly fun time with a knockout cast of established and up-and-coming greats including Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, and a fresh-faced Leonardo DiCaprio. We begin with a discussion of the Western, its persistence and malleability as genre, and where Raimi's vision falls in the lineage of America's mythmaking. Then, we examine the political limitations of The Quick and the Dead, its topicality as a piece of pop filmmaking, and its reduction of symbolism to mere signifier. Finally, we discuss Sharon Stone as actor and producer, and how the film offers her an oppotunity to explore a character that runs counter to the archetypal femme fatale roles she had made her career playing thus far.Elsewhere, we briefly discuss another great 00s thriller in our ongoing watch project - David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway and share some thoughts on the new Isaac Chotiner interview with The Quick and the Dead and Melania DP Dante Spinotti.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.
Today, Todd & Leslie have an emotional and heartfelt conversation with Tanya Vance (aka “Tennessee”) from Survivor: Thailand (Season 5). Tanya shares deeply personal stories about her Survivor experience, including the devastating loss of her father while competing on the show. The conversation explores how Survivor transformed her life perspective, teaching her that she could break free from self-imposed limitations and become the architect of her own life. Tanya discusses her brief six-day experience on the island, where severe illness from malaria medication led to her early elimination, and reflects on how different she would play the game now with 25 years of life experience. The episode also covers lighter moments, including behind-the-scenes casting stories, post-show adventures through Thailand, and Tanya's current work in animal pharmaceutical sales while maintaining her commitment to charitable causes.Key Points of Interest:• Tanya lost her father to a heart attack while competing on Survivor Thailand, and CBS flew her home first class to attend the funeral• Her father's death led to a reconciliation between him and Tanya's sister after 10 years of not speaking, inspiring many fans to reconnect with estranged family members• Tanya lost 15 pounds in just six days due to severe illness from malaria medication taken on an empty stomach• She revealed a secret pre-game alliance with Ken Stafford, exchanging phone numbers at the hotel before the show started• Tanya's audition video featured her in a "Happy Bear" costume from her work at the Children's Advocacy Center• Casting director Lynne Spillman made Tanya switch outfits with a stranger right before her final interview to maintain her "girl next door" image• The Thailand location was filmed where Leonardo DiCaprio's "The Beach" was shot, with temperatures averaging 115 degrees• Mark Burnett personally hung out with early eliminated contestants at Ponderosa, a level of involvement that changed in later seasons• Tanya has remained deeply involved in the Survivor community for 25 years, attending charity events and helping aspiring contestants• She credits Survivor with inspiring her career change from social work to pharmaceutical sales while maintaining charitable work with domestic violence and rape victimsSpecial thanks to the best Whiskey on the Planet Watertown Whiskey! Episode 101: One Battle After Another This week on Philosophy in Film, the gang locks in on Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling, darkly funny, and relentlessly restless epic, One Battle After Another. Inspired by Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, the film follows Bob, a washed-up former revolutionary played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who's forced back into a life he thought he'd escaped when his daughter disappears and an old enemy resurfaces. Craig kicks off the revolution with Producer's Notes (11:36). Alain tackles the Beauclair Synopsis (25:20), charting Bob's return to dangerous terrain where revolution, paranoia, and fatherhood overlap in uneasy ways. From the Philosopher's Corner (49:18), Chris traces how the film wrestles with paternal responsibility and competence. The gang then sits at the Round Table (56:24) where they attempt to reveal the film's galactic roots while relating it to Star Wars. The episode follows a crest and dip in the road as Reviews (1:37:06) and Mailbag (2:02:55) close us out. As always, we explore the philosophical and non-philosophical terrain of the film, because when every battle leaves a mark, the hardest fight is often with what you carry forward. We have a new website! Come visit us and check it out! https://philosophyinfilm.ca/
With French 75 Cocktails with the kick of a Diet Slice, we talk about "One Battle After Another." What happens when reality jumps the shark of satire? What happens when narcissists don't plan for their own failure? The contrasting visions of revolution. How Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio's collaboration made the film better. The revolution will not be televised.
World War Two has long been the backdrop for many Hollywood films - meaning that reenactors can sometimes offer their servives to film makers and be employed as extras. emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Will Poulter, originally episode 167 from 2017-10-17.Original writeup below:In the midst of his current promo run for Kathryn Bigelow's 'Detroit', Will takes time to sit down with Pip for a long overdue chat covering - as you will have come to expect from the DPP - a crazy large number of bases... From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'. One Battle After Another earned 13 Oscar nominations - including best picture, best director and a lead actor nomination for Leonardo DiCaprio. In the action-thriller, DiCaprio plays a washed up ex-revolutionary searching for his missing daughter while raging against the machine. In this case, the machine is unabashedly racist, xenophobic, and corrupt. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the ensemble also includes Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor and Benicio del Toro.
