On April 29, 2002, in the small town of Pataskala, Ohio, a social worker sat on the floor with a two-year-old girl. The little girl's mother had been murdered in their kitchen the night before, and police thought she might have witnessed the crime. The girl clutched a stuffed animal to her chest while the social worker asked her if anyone else had been in her house the night before. The girl nodded – and uttered a name that would turn her family's lives upside down. Echoes of Civil War and Hidden Histories in the South — Nathaniel Philbrick — Retracing Washington's Southernroute reveals prophetic historical connections to the future American Civil War, as many mansions and estates Washington visited were subsequently destroyed during General Sherman's March through the South. Philbrickdocuments Washington's diplomatically fraught and contradictory interactions with the Catawba Indians, wherein Washington assured them of federal protection while simultaneously waging military campaigns against tribes in Ohio, exposing the fundamental dishonesty of federal Indian policy. Philbrick explores Old Salem, where the Moraviansearch for religious freedom coexisted with a hidden, systematically suppressed history of slavery within Moraviancommunities. Philbrick emphasizes the tangible endurance of history, describing the discovery of physical remnants—bricks, chains, abandoned ferry sites—that materially connect contemporary observers to Washington's eighteenth-century journey. 1889

Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. Founded in 1898 on 240 acres of farmland donated to the state, Massillon State Hospital opened its doors under the name Eastern Ohio Mental Asylum. Its first patients came from 21 Ohio counties. At its peak in the 1950s, the hospital housed more than 3,100 patients and employed roughly 365 staff — part of what many regarded as one of “the most beautiful institutions in the world.” But as treatments and mental-health policies evolved, the massive institution began to shrink. By the mid-1970s many patients were transferred out, and over decades the facility gradually shifted identities — eventually becoming Heartland Behavioral Health Center. The origins: how farmland donated by early settlers became a state asylum. Lives within the walls: personal stories, struggles, and survival in a sprawling mental-health institution. The rise and fall: how peak expansion gave way to decline, changing mental-health philosophies, and shifting societal attitudes. What remains today: the buildings, the memories, the legacy — and the efforts to preserve or repurpose pieces of its history. Join us on a journey through time, memory, and healing. If you're curious about mental-health history, local heritage, or the echoes of institutions long gone — this podcast is for you. A massive capacity glut is forcing established fleets like James R. Smith Trucking to close their doors. We also look at the sudden collapse of two Minnesota carriers, MinStar Transport and Transport Design Inc., which left 200 drivers out of work overnight. As legitimate capacity folds, the industry is becoming a regulatory "hellscape" where loopholes allow minimally trained drivers to replace compliant operators. We discuss how these unchecked market dynamics have contributed to a 40% rise in fatal truck crashes and a surge in cargo theft. State authorities are stepping up enforcement, with Mississippi referring illegal truckers to ICE after identifying drivers violating English proficiency and license standards. This segment highlights the growing push to close federal loopholes that have allowed non-domiciled CDL abuse to flourish. In the financial sector, we analyze the widening performance gap as RXO receives a negative outlook from S&P Global while competitor C.H. Robinson sees its credit rating upgraded. The discussion breaks down the sharp contrast in debt ratios and stock market performance between these two brokerage giants. We also report on the sentencing of an Ohio trucking operator to 30 months in prison for a decades-long tax evasion scheme involving shadow companies. Finally, help celebrate the industry's unsung heroes by casting your vote for America's favorite freight town in our latest contest. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On today's FreightWaves Morning Minute, we report on the sudden closure of two Minnesota carriers that has left approximately 200 drivers out of work. MinStar Transport and Transport Design, Inc., both operating under True North Equity Partners, announced they were ceasing operations over the weekend. We also discuss a crackdown on the southern border where Mississippi is sending illegal truckers to ICE after identifying 85 unauthorized drivers in three months. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is advocating for stricter federal legislation regarding non-domiciled CDLs and English language proficiency to address these safety concerns. In legal news, an Ohio trucking company operator has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for a long-running tax evasion scheme involving Defense Department contracts. Alice Martin must pay nearly $2 million in restitution after pleading guilty to charges related to her company, Martin Logistics. Finally, tune in to FreightWaves TV at noon for a new episode of WHAT THE TRUCK?!? featuring Malcolm Harris. You can catch the live broadcast or listen to the replay on SiriusXM channel 146. On this episode of WHAT THE TRUCK?!?, host Malcolm Harris dives into a packed lineup covering the latest issues shaping freight, technology, and trucking regulation. We kick things off with Rudy Nemeth of Veloster Solutions, who breaks down how AI is transforming fleet management through predictive maintenance, smarter safety systems, and advanced route optimization following their recent acquisition of NextBillion.ai. Next, Magnus Technologies CEO Matt Cartwright joins the show to talk about the real roots of the driver shortage, why it's a systemic issue rather than a people problem, and how empathy, communication, and integrated technology platforms can dramatically improve driver satisfaction and retention. He also shares insights from decades in the industry and why unifying data is the key to modern fleet operations. To wrap up, Andrew Poliakoff, Executive Director of CVTA, gives an inside look at the state of driver training, the federal crackdown on fraudulent training providers, and what fleets, students, and schools need to know about compliance, safety, and upcoming regulatory changes. He explains why proper training matters now more than ever and what red flags new drivers should watch for. Malcolm also covers major news across the country, including Mississippi's crackdown on undocumented drivers, the abrupt shutdown of two Minnesota carriers affecting 200 drivers, and an Ohio logistics owner sentenced for a multimillion-dollar tax evasion scheme. Can a prison sentence be extended after someone's already behind bars? Using the tragic story behind Ohio's Reagan Tokes Act as a starting point, we break down how and why sentences might be lengthened, what role the parole authority plays, and the evolution of sentencing laws in Ohio. Along the way, we touch upon the legal debates around due process, the politics of laws named after victims, and what all of this means for people caught up in the system. Whether you're curious about indefinite sentences, parole hearings, or just want to know how the law actually works beyond the headlines, this episode brings clarity—with plenty of opinions. Here are 3 key takeaways:The Reagan Tokes Act in Ohio introduced indefinite sentencing: For qualifying felony crimes of violence, offenders receive a sentencing range (e.g., 8 to 11 years). The parole board can extend incarceration up to the maximum if there are continuing risks or infractions, fundamentally shifting how time served is determined.Due process and legal controversy: The Ohio Supreme Court recently upheld the Reagan Tokes Act's structure (in State v. Hacker, 2023), deciding that the judge still sets the range while the parole authority determines exactly how long is served—raising ongoing debates around separation of powers and due process. The risks of “exception-based” legislation: Laws named after victims, like the Reagan Tokes Act, often arise from singular, horrific events. While politically compelling, they can create widespread changes affecting many beyond the case that prompted them.Got a question you want answered on the podcast? In the junkyard the meanest dog wins. But we're not in the junkyard anymore. Early in Paul's letter to the Romans we meet a different kind of God: The incorruptible Judge who does not wink at sin, but who also saves from sin. This week's episode is a little different. We wanted to give you a full view inside a VestiBesties mentorship call where Christina Garrity, PT, DPT, NCS interviewed a neuro-otologist she works with in Ohio, Dr. Jimmy Prueter. Dr. Prueter was invited to the conversation to help clinicians better understand when, why and which tests people with vestibular conditions should be getting. The conversation-style interview is between Christina and Dr. Preuter, taken straight from a VestiBestie webinar so you can have exclusive access! In the discussion they outlined the challenges associated with diagnosing dizziness, noting that ENT residency programs don't always adequately prepare physicians for complex vestibular cases. Dr. Prueter stressed that while some tests—such as VNG with calorics or VEMP—can be helpful in specific scenarios, the decision to order them should be driven by whether the results would actually impact clinical management. Particularly for acute vestibular hypofunction, a strong clinical suspicion based on history and examination might mean that testing is less essential, and prompt referral to vestibular rehab can prevent unnecessary delays. They highlighted that clear documentation from therapists AND teaching physicians how to find what they need in it can provide valuable context for physicians. Plus, educating primary care doctors about early referral to vestibular therapy might streamline the diagnostic process. Abundance and Why Selfishness is Good In this episode, we take on important questions like: "Is carbon dioxide good or bad?", "Is the American Dream still alive?", and "Why is selfishness good?" Canada has 3 proposed laws that may give their government a lot more power and take away a lot of freedom for their citizens. In his stories, George Orwell predicted a lot of the things going on now. While those that believe in Socialism say they want to make people "equal", nature has its own equilibrium. Government just needs to get out of the way. In order to achieve great things, we need to know that we can succeed and keep the benefits of our efforts. Tune in to find out why selfishness in a voluntary society is good. Fake can look pretty (ever heard of Instagram?), but sometimes our lives can feel like that fake Christmas tree in your living room. It's beautiful, perfect, and also..sterile and lifeless. In this 12 Days of Breeders interview, we welcome Andrea Jones of Maple Hill Doodles in Ohio. A 25-year veteran breeder of Goldendoodles, Cavapoos, and Cavadoodles, Andrea has built her program on advanced, and sometimes unconventional, health protocols. Andrea shares her techniques for holistic management, detailing the logistics of maintaining a non-vaccination protocol for her entire program, underpinned by a raw, species-appropriate diet. Critically, Andrea reveals how she's raised the bar for buyers to solidify her own credibility, demanding a higher standard of commitment from her clientele. This episode is essential listening for any breeder looking to bring more holistic rearing into their program, covering not only her dog management techniques, but also her non-negotiable business rules: maintaining a mandatory financial escrow for emergencies, ensuring all contracts are attorney-reviewed and ironclad, and utilizing rigorous structural health clearances (OFA Hips/Elbows) that go beyond standard genetic testing.

John Casmon interviews Dani Lynn Robison, co-founder of a vertically integrated “Freedom Family” of nine real estate businesses, about how she moved from Ohio turnkey rentals into larger multifamily and fund management. Dani walks through why she brought renovations, property management, acquisitions, brokerage, and capital raising in-house, and how that 56-unit “drugs, thugs and bugs” deal became a $2M proof-of-concept for scaling apartments. She shares her hard-won lessons on hiring “Ferrari-level” leaders, structuring roles with profit sharing, and keeping a 100% payout track record by always making investors whole—even on bad deals. Dani also explains why many turnkey buyers don't actually want to be landlords, how she now focuses on truly passive vehicles like funds and syndications, and where she's seeing opportunities in Sun Belt multifamily, senior housing, self-storage, and build-to-rent as bridge loans come due over the next few years. Tish Hyman walks into a women's locker room at a LA Gold's Gym and sees naked male bodies. She tries to ignore it, but it keeps happening for months. When management does nothing, she reaches a breaking point and explodes in an exasperated rant captured on a viral video. But the mainstream media has a problem: Tish is a proud black gay woman and a Grammy nominated songwriter. The person she confronted was Alexis Black (formerly Kyle Grant Freeman), who is white and appeared male – and was reportedly “sentenced to one year in an Ohio prison in 2022 after pleading guilty to savagely beating his then-wife and breaking her jaw” (NY Post). Now the MSM is tied up in pretzels. Can't call her racist. Can't call her homophobic. Can't call her sexist. So instead, the media dismisses 2025's top story about the erosion of women's rights, leaving the real journalism to TMZ. Education activist Corey DeAngelis joins to discuss the Trump admin's dismantling of the Department Of Education, and a whistleblower video of teachers union members claiming “biology is a spectrum.” Tish Hyman (AKA Latisha Tawana Hyman) is a Grammy-nominated songwriter and artist who has has collaborated with Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign, H.E.R., and many others. On the eve of this year's exciting Sithmas event, let's travel back to the winter of 2023, for a conversation about how this multi-club event began: How does a Star Wars meetup become a holiday tradition? Every year, Pennsylvanian collector Mike De Stefano hosts Sithmas, a weekend event that celebrates Star Wars and the holidays. The weekend kicks off with a Friday night meal, followed by Saturday's main event. The day is packed with festivities - from a White Bantha gift exchange to a special dinner together, to tours of Mike's three incredible Star Wars collection rooms. This year, approximately 80 Star Wars collectors from EIGHT regional clubs - Seattle, Ontario, New York, the Northeast, Pennsylvania, D.C/Virginia, Ohio and Indiana - will travel to the Lancaster area to celebrate Sithmas with Mike at his home. Join host David Quinn for a conversation with Mike, as Mike discusses how Sithmas began, how it evolved, and why it has become a must-attend event on the Star Wars collector calendar each December! At night, the Ohio data center felt too aware. The radio wasn't glitching—it was responding, shifting with Brian's mood like something was using it to reach him. Then the footsteps came. One weekend, the building replayed a pattern no one living had walked in years: the front door opening… slow steps down the stairwell…a left turn into the basement…and a stop right at Brian's doorway. Nothing stood there. But the air felt charged, like the hallway remembered something it shouldn't. Before the data center existed, the land held whispers of a death beneath an old tree—a story no one could confirm but everyone knew. And the coldest room in the building sits exactly where that tree once stood. Brian realized some places don't wait for company. And some spirits never clock out. #RealGhostStoriesOnline #ParanormalActivity #HauntedWorkplace #TrueGhostStory #NightShiftGhost #BasementHaunting #FootstepsInTheDark #GhostlyEncounters #DataCenterGhost #SupernaturalStories #CreepyWorkStories Love real ghost stories? Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com What does it take to go from Ohio to LA and start mixing records at the highest level? In this episode, I sat down with mixer and engineer Ryan Nasci to trace his journey from the Midwest to Los Angeles, where he worked alongside the legendary Tony Maserati and began mixing artists like Kingfish, Celeste, and more. Ryan breaks down how he built a hybrid workflow that blends analog gear, plugins, and Atmos into mixes that stay musical, open, and emotionally focused. We dig into Ryan's approach to gain staging, managing headroom, using trim plugins, tightening low end, and shaping vocals for dynamic performers. He shares how he uses tape vs. plugins, when hardware matters, how to set compression strategies that preserve energy, and why understanding the why behind every move is the key to a competitive mix. Ryan also talks about mixing in Atmos, building depth with headphones, creative mic choices in small studios, keeping mixes clean without over-stacking plugins, and how persistence, day-rate pricing, and good communication help engineers build sustainable careers in today's industry. In this episode, we step inside The Rooted Refuge, a community-centered acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic founded by Dr. Christopher Peacock, whose approach blends accessible healthcare and deeply personalized treatment. Dr. Peacock shares how growing up with sick parents in rural Ohio shaped his belief that healing must go beyond symptom management and instead focus on root-cause wellness. He explains the fundamentals of TCM—including acupuncture, herbs, tongue and pulse diagnosis—and how he tailors every treatment to the individual, especially for conditions like anxiety, insomnia, digestive imbalance, fertility challenges, and chronic pain. We also explore his mission to make acupuncture financially accessible through sliding-scale pricing, free clinics, and a collaborative practitioner model that reduces overhead to better serve marginalized communities. This conversation offers listeners an eye-opening look at how holistic medicine can be both effective and equitable. To learn more about Dr. Peacock, visit therootedrefuge.com
Union organizing in Cleveland has been gaining ground, and it's not just taking on large corporations. Driven by workers seeking fair wages, safer working conditions, and a voice at the table, local unionization has repeatedly made headlines here in Cleveland. One thing is clear: This isn't your grandparents' labor movement. Multiple sectors, including small businesses and nonprofits, are joining a growing effort to unionize as they face a rising cost of living, inflation, and a challenging political climate. What new strategies are needed to support workers, build solidarity, and create a more equitable workplace?rnrnPanelists: Tim Francisco, Director, The Center for Working Class Studies; Professor of English, Youngstown State University; Grace Heffernan, Executive Director, Northeast Ohio Worker Center; and Brian Pearson, Executive Secretary, North Shore AFL-CIO. Moderated by City Club Director of Programming Cynthia Connolly.

On Friday, October 27, 1989, 10-year-old Amy Mihaljevic rode her bike to Bay Middle School in Bay Village, Ohio. She was excited about yearbook photo retakes, but after classes ended Amy’s mother expected a daily check-in call, and although Amy phoned her saying her choir tryout went well, she never came home. Investigators learned Amy had actually walked to the nearby Bay Square Shopping Center with friends after school. An unknown caller had convinced her to meet them there to buy a “gift” for her mother — a story that wasn't true. Witnesses saw her speaking with a man in the parking lot before she vanished. Months later, on February 8, 1990, a jogger discovered Amy’s body in a rural cornfield in Ashland County, ending the search but leaving behind a haunting mystery.
