Who Watches the Heroes? When superheroes cause civilian casualties while trying to save the world, who holds them responsible? This episode dives deep into the complex ethics of superhero accountability, using Marvel's Civil War (the comics) and the MCU's Captain America: Civil War (the movie) as starting points to explore broader questions about power, oversight, and responsibility. The discussion examines how superhero accountability parallels real-world debates about police, military, and government oversight. Matthew and Riki analyze different models of accountability, from internal team oversight to international bodies like the UN, questioning whether registration requirements are justified and what happens when good intentions lead to tragic outcomes. Can we trust those with extraordinary powers to regulate themselves? The hosts explore how the evolution of superhero stories mirrors changing public attitudes toward authority figures, shifting from unquestioned trust to demands for greater oversight. The conversation weighs the challenges of balancing individual liberty with public safety when dealing with people who are, in essence, "living weapons."What constitutes appropriate oversight versus excessive control? The episode examines various approaches—from complete autonomy to strict registration requirements—while considering how factors like intent, training, and leadership responsibility should factor into accountability systems.Other Key Topics Discussed:Differences between the comic version of Civil War and the MCU's Captain America: Civil WarThe role of secret identities in accountability debatesParallels between superhero oversight and real-world authority figuresThe impact of Vietnam and the Watergate scandal on superhero narrativesChallenges of regulating innate powers versus granted authorityThe evolution of moral complexity in comic storytellingInternational versus national jurisdiction over superheroesLeadership accountability in hierarchical organizationsBalancing security and individual rightsThe episode concludes by examining how accountability doesn't necessarily mean assuming bad intent, but rather ensuring proper systems exist to evaluate outcomes and prevent unintended harm. Even heroes acting with the best intentions need external perspectives to assess whether their actions truly serve the greater good. This is our February member bonus episode. Protests dominate the news. And while we're familiar with freedom of speech, free exercise of religion, and freedom of the press—what about the freedom of assembly? The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution—also contains “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.”But what exactly does that secure? How does this foundational, but often forgotten, right impact the shape of democracy, undergirding and making possible a flourishing public life? And are we prepared to defend the full application of these rights to our political rivals? Those we disagree with?Legal scholar John Inazu (Washington University, St. Louis) joins Evan Rosa for a discussion of the freedom of assembly—its history, meaning, interpretation, and application—as well as how it impacts the ability for citizens to gather to demonstrate and protest.Show NotesRead the Constitution of the United States of America (1787)Learning toGet your copy of Liberty's Refuge: The Forgotten Freedom of AssemblyClick here to download a free version of Liberty's Refuge. The First AmendmentIntroducing peaceable assembly.“I was working for a federal judge and working on a First Amendment case, looked down at the text of the First Amendment and saw the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and I thought to myself, I've had three years of law school and four years of legal practice, and I've never thought about the Assembly Clause.”Ecclesia as a counter political entity“I can't assemble alone.”“Know Your Rights” by The ClashThree historical points about interpreting the assembly clauseThe grammar of the assembly clauseAssembly and Petition are two distinct rightsThe right of associationThe right of privacyAssembly is the right of associationWhere are the limits of a protest? Is it enough to “hope” for more diversity in next year's Startup Muster top mentors list? As a female mentor of Angela Priestly's once told her, hope is not a strategy. It's clear after the 2023 Startup Muster report's first version of the top eight mentors in the sector that we must find a better action plan to have more diversity and inclusion in Australia's startups. This week, we also take a look at a staggering report that shows three in five employers in Australia are failing to take sexual harassment and discrimination complaints seriously. But we also have a few wins to recognise, including the Matildas' pay boost, a positive update on US reproductive rights and a woman on live TV in Australia leading the way in normalising conversations of menopause and perimenopause. Messaged based on 1 Peter 5:6-11 If we don't stand for something, we will fall for anything. Where should men and women of God take our stand today? At the end of Peter's first letter, he recognizes that Christians are in a cosmic conflict. Instead of focusing on our adversary, he reminds us again of our Advocate who is greater by far. We do not lower our eyes in despair and say, “Look what the world has come to,” but we lift our eyes in delight and say, “Look who has come to the world.” We take our stand on the God of glory and grace. He will not let us fall.Quotes:Jerry Brooks: If you are going to get old, you are going to have to get tough.Duane Brooks: With all the changing fashions in our culture, we may be sure that humility will always be good to wear. Joel Gregory: An obituary for Tie.  I met Tie as a teenager.  I brought Tie and his friends to Baylor when I was 17.  Few friends have been as close for so many years.  Tie has been a friend embracing me in the good of my years and the bad of my tears.  Tie has cleaved to me in weddings and funerals.  When I joined the Fort Worth Club in 1985 it would not let me in for lunch or dinner unless Tie dined too.  The best Italian restaurant, Vito's, would not want me without Tie.  No pulpit would welcome me without Tie.I have noticed, however, Tie has almost vanished.  He does not get out much.  His closest friends, lawyers and bankers, have abandoned Tie.  I did not know his condition was as bad as I discovered today.I walked 18 blocks in New York City, from 55th to 46th and back.  In Gotham,  the Big Apple, the crossroads of the world, I did not see any friends of Tie at all, not one.  I alone embracedTie.  Although in denial, I must now face the sad truth that Tie is terminal.  Tie is on life support.  Bye Tie.Lyrics to Monsters:Oh, before they turn off all the lightsI won't read you your wrongs or your rightsThe time has goneI'll tell you goodnight, close the doorTell you I love you once moreThe time has goneSo here it isI'm not your son, you're not my fatherWe're just two grown men saying goodbyeNo need to forgive, no need to forgetI know your mistakes and you know mineAnd while you're sleeping, I'll try to make you proudSo daddy, won't you just close your eyes?Don't be afraid, maybe it's my turn to chase the monsters awayPsaltry Song lyrics: I will cast all my cares upon you.  I will lay all of my burdens down at your feet.  And anytime I don't know what to do.  I will cast all my cares upon you.Duane Brooks: My Father has always been in the restoration business – and He still is!  His grace is still sufficient.  His glory shines forever.  Take your stand on that.  You won't fall.To discover more messages of hope go to tallowood.org/sermons/.Follow us on Instagram, X, and YouTube @tallowoodbc.Follow us on FaceBook @tallowoodbaptist

Was the iconic Roy Lichtenstein a great artist, a thief, or both? This is the question posed by Whaam! Blam! Roy Lichtenstein and the Art of Appropriation, a documentary film directed and produced by today's podcast guest, James L Hussey.“When I set out to make [the film], I viewed it as a very straightforward, intellectual, technical film about appropriation,” says James, who released the film in November 2022. “When is it OK? When is it not OK? What surprised me and surprised audiences is that [it turned] into a human-interest story.” On today's podcast episode, host and NOT REAL ART founder Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with James to discuss Whaam! Blam!, Lichtenstein's legacy, and the thin line between appropriation and plagiarism.A key figure in the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, Lichtenstein borrowed directly from comic books, advertisements, and historical art sources to create bold, graphic paintings. His recognizable works are housed in the world's finest galleries and can fetch upwards of $150 million a piece—but some see him as nothing more than a plagiarist. “[Whaam! Blam! raises] this question about appropriation and whether what Lichtenstein did was right or wrong,” James tells Scott. “Like so many things, it's not always black and white. There's a lot of gray.” Today, James shares stories from the last living comic artists Lichtenstein copied from, and why they're unhappy about it: “[The art world] very casually refers to the original comic art as ‘low art,' while almost an exact copy of it, blown up and hanging in the Tate Modern, is [considered] ‘high art,'” James says, explaining that some of these comics toiled in obscurity, below the poverty line. Tune in for our thought-provoking conversation with James L Hussey on plagiarism, appropriation, and giving artists credit where credit is due.Watch the trailer for Whaam! Blam! empty MEDITATIONS ON AMERICA [05:23-08:56]To live n die in America Pardon my skin I am not aryan Racked my mind and I don't knowThere isn't another place that I can goIt is where I am fromThis is all that I have beenWhat I knowWill not let me inIt would be better If we were in a new era But we are the new era We'll resurrect old errors As we Magnify terror We live with our hairs (heads) up Errors never diedAnd Tensions don't lieWe address Pressures To the skyLet the anger rise As we Lie In Wake And allow moments to dieAs We Negotiate Faith This pace will not bring us peaceThese Situations will bring us to OUR knees Slow DOWNWe are home NOWWe should Respect our dwelling Why are we yelling If mamma's not homeAnd poppa ain't knownAnd our problems are stoneI guess we've gotta be grownOr we're goneTo live and survive in America Pardon my mind I did not care enoughRacked up time This is all I ownDreaming of the places that we can goWhere I'm from Considers me sinThe dreams I holdAre not allowed to beginOne way LETTERSAs We tried to keep our heads upBut if everybody is fed upAnd problems won't let upAre we the ones that dead usOr do we birth effortThe pleasure In beingIs in the privelage of seeing We don't need 20/20 vision Just enough to measure distance And acknowledge differenceI Should not have to RUN for my raceOr sing amazing grace While covering my faceIf grace is so amazingWe would have the will to stop hazing Wait a cotton pickin minute You would think we'd know our limitsAll these battles that we're pickinJust to rattle while we picketIn the gravel or the thicketWe could unravel or just stick inStrange fruitGrow from poisoned rootsWe can go about business in our suitsWhile we Follow suitAnd wallow in sootOr we could make a difference Run the distance in our shoesOr we can go down the CHUTE Playing CHUTES And ladders But the fun stop when who you SHOOTDon't matterWe need to climb the latterSnakes get to feastWhen the blocks get slippery We talk about substance We talk about lovin'The things that we covet Only produce coversTo live and thrive in AmericaPart of our crime we're not aware enoughLaawd hear meOr heal meRemove the fear weMakeIt has Been some time agoDon't know where I'ma goFeelin MIAAll we give youAll we live throughWe just need a wayTime has failed usTime will tell usI can't keep my faithWalkin through the mudI can't no moreTried pull aboveI'm not so sureMy skin huesThese are old newsI wont changeI told youI can't change I hope youWould get itI'm holding to livinThese stares become prisonsI know what I've givenI hope you would listenYou don'tI won't Give up lightOr surrender my rightsThe reason for livin is lifeAnd the American life should be every lifeOur goal to live and rise and America
