Connection between individuals is established, logical and empathetic communications are established. Assessments of evidence begins to be made with greater depth and scope, and conclusions are drawn and redrawn using the evidence of intellectually and empathetically acquired data. Obstacles are identified. 4. Creativity is allowed to occur, which is encouraged by enhanced Flexibility with each individual's intellectual and empathetic methods. 5. Innovation occurs, and the obstacles are seen as opportunities, by creating artistic expressions, businesses providing goods and services which help to remove the effects of the obstacles (or remove the obstacle completely), social events, and creative applications that are as-yet unknown. Proper Care of One's Lenses: Questions to ask and answer for one's self: 1. Are my lenses scratched or splattered with obstructing images, such as appeals to any authority wherein the evidence is referred to but there is not any primary or secondary corroboration of the supporting evidence? 2. What observations (available from your favorite search engines on the internet) are available covering various pro/con/objective/subjective/alternative perspectives involving whichever type of “lens” that is being considered (i.e. NVC, the Trivium method, etc)? 3. How does the use of the methods of the above-described “lenses” work in terms of analysis using this version of the “Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs”? Phrases and Expressions that are potentially useful for “Building Bridges of Empathy” 1. “Perhaps....What do you think of this assertion/observation?” 2. “Would you be willing to hear me out on this idea or observation?” (It might often be preferable for there to be made explicitly clear that there is an “opt out” function for them to say “No!” and for more options to be included in the discussion.) 3. (To say quietly to one's self, usually...) “I noticed when I observed _____ I felt ____ because of some apparent desire or value I had for _____ . I'll make a plan to say/do ____ now, or later on, so as to fulfill my own personal desire or value for ______.” All of this is done quietly in one's own head, unless this is being shared with someone who both knows and understands these skills, as well as has the empathetic equilibrium and interest in one's own emotional and intellectual landscape. 4. “I wonder if ______. What do you think about this idea/observation?” 5. “I speculate that _____. Perhaps ________? What do you think?” 6. “It seems possible to me that ______. Does it seem to you that _______?” “Danger Words” - Words with great potential for “Definition Wobble” 1. Forgive- (often implying a desire for increased understanding, respect, connection and caring). 2. Apology- (a communication attempting to implying a desire for increased understanding, respect, connection and caring). 3. Part Three: Helpful Metaphors and Methods What are the results of knowing and using the skills of the Trivium Method of critical thinking in conjunction with the skills of using Voluntary Communication, also known as Non-Violent Communication (or NVC)? This show continues a series about Merging the Trivium Method with Voluntary Communication, and developing strategies for better interpersonal connections. Darrell Becker will be co-hosting all episodes in this series. Discussed Today: (Darrell's Notes) Relevant Metaphors: 1. Splinters in the Mind: Mental Splinters are composed of the dependence and exclusive use of the informal logical fallacies as methods of making important decisions. Emotional Splinters are composed of emotional “wounds” or emotions that indicate values and desires that are not adequately being tended to, and are often used to create decisions that are based upon the “Stimulus-Emotion-Pre-Programmed Response” pattern of the choice of action. 2. Bridge of Empathy: This refers to the connection of caring between individuals, a perceptible and subjectively felt quality of mutual compassion between communicating individuals. The properties of this “Bridge” include the qualities of only being crossable by the voluntary action of each person to each other person. One cannot push or pull one’s own self or someone else across this bridge, only a voluntary decision to care about each other can constitute the construction of a solid “Bridge of Empathy”. 3. 18-Wheeler’s of Logic: This refers to the delivery system of each individual’s information and the method of interpretation that is intended for such information. Picture a “Bridge of Empathy” as providing the terrain required to support the “18-Wheeler” truck carrying the logic cargo from one individual to another. A “Manifest” is included in this cargo, listing all of the included information and the relevant rationales being employed and utilized. Each individual is encouraged to voluntarily choose which items are being desired to “unload” off of the truck and utilize, and which are not being valued (at that time) by an individual, and are left on the “truck”. 4. Intellectual and Empathetic Lenses, Using Them to Help Focus “Reality”: You see the intellectual side of yourself, other individuals and the entire universe, looking through the lens of the Trivium method of critical thinking. Questions are asked consistently (the 5 W's + How) and intellectual equilibrium is desired, designed, engineered and created, using methods that lead to desired and predictable results. You see the empathetic side of yourself and other individuals, looking through the lens of NVC, using an internal and external application of OFNR + knowledge and understanding of the 4D's. Emotional and empathetic equilibrium are desired, designed, engineered and created, using methods that lead to desired and predictable results. Methods to Help Generate a “Bridge of Empathy”, Within and Between Individuals: There is usually a series of attempts made to create a palpable connection of caring/respect between each of the individuals. O-F-N-R is used to make a guess as to finding a way to connect to any specific individual. A. Speak specifically in reference to the other person’s Needs (motivating factors, values & desires). This means the abstract concepts (see: literacy of needs), with no nouns or proper nouns. B. Speak of your own Feelings, as a method of being vulnerable, unless you would think this could be confused with an attempt to solicit pity or some other emotion, in reference to the discussion. C. Speak of your own Needs (motivating factors stated in the abstract), unless you would think this could be confused with an attempt to beg or persuade, and if it seems such attempts would not serve to create connection. D. Speak of the other person’s Feelings, unless you think this could be confused with some Diagnosing of the other person, or some other psychological “intrusion” into unwanted emotional territory. Also open to discussion, for the purposes of connecting empathetically and potentially creating intellectual harmony, is communicating about the Observations and Strategies (a.k.a. “Requests” or Actions). A. Speak to how the other person Observed the situation (from their perspective). B. Speak to how you Observed the situation, unless you think this could be confused with an attempt to persuade or imply some inaccuracy on the part of the other person. C. Speak to how you wish to respond with Requests which could lead to enhanced levels of connection and empathy, unless you see such requests being confused with Demands. D. Speak to how the other person choses to respond (their Requests or actions), unless it seems that speaking about the other person’s choice of response is being confused for a Diagnosis. Part One: Purposes and Definitions What are the results of knowing and using the skills of the Trivium Method of critical thinking in conjunction with the skills of using Voluntary Communication, also known as Non-Violent Communication (or NVC)? This show begins a series about Merging the Trivium Method with Voluntary Communication, and developing strategies for better interpersonal connections. Darrell Becker will be co-hosting all episodes in this series. Darrell's Purposes For This Pursuit 1. The first purpose was so that an individual may possess an explicit (meaning explainable to one's self and others in a simple and straightforward way) method to find and gently remove one's own sources of “cognitive dissonance”, which were labeled with the metaphor of “splinters in the mind”. 2. The second purpose was to be able to know and understand other people's “splinters”, and to be able to avoid putting undue pressure upon such obstacles to other people's method of critical thinking, but rather, to offer opportunities of connection by virtue of building “bridges of empathy”, metaphorically and subjectively understood signs of understanding and respect which seem to “coincidentally” correspond to enhanced communication capabilities. 3. The third purpose was to produce enhanced empathetic connections and communications, which seems to correspond to more frequent collaboration, which in turn seems to correlate with increased creativity and innovation. 4. The fourth purpose is to help to generate circumstances (filled with connection and creativity) which are likely to lead to increased innovation, wherein obstacles and “problems” are seen by more and more people as being opportunities to provide goods or services which help to solve those problems. These obstacles are apparently caused by the impediments individuals are able to identify as preventing someone from gaining whatever is needed or desired. These obstacles are very often caused by any “barrier” that is perceived by any particular individual as obstructing something that is needed, desired and/or valued. With creativity, obstacles are turned into opportunities to make businesses, to make artistic expressions, to create a functional gathering or an event, or a product or service, something that has potential to thrive and survive due to the perceived need and desire for what is created. This can be something which, in the long run, helps to render the problems (problems that are often seemingly caused by “obligatory monopolies” which are wielding threats and backed up by extensive tradition and supporting individuals) caused by apparent situations of coercion obsolete, due to a plethora of solutions being innovated, reproduced, improved and distributed to all who need and desire them. Rhys Roberts, as well as How To Read a Book by Adler & Van Doren are also required for this course.) _____________________________________________________________________________   - Thumbnail sketch of Formal Rhetoric   -   RHETORIC - Systematic Wisdom - persuasively expressing or using Knowledge (general grammar) and Understanding (Aristotelean logic).   > (Definition of Art - Anything produced by the "arm" of man ["arm" is being used metaphorically to reference etymology]. This is, again, a broad definition that includes the concept of "fine art" which is the most popular connotation of "art". It can be either an idea having only mental existence or a physical art-ifact produced by the "arm" of man from an idea. An unwritten poem passed on from one person to another is an example of the former; a novel, an opera, a sculpture, a space shuttle, or the protocols of medicine are examples of the latter.)   Systematic Wisdom is not the art of persuasion and explanation itself, but the art of selecting the best means of persuasion and explanation from a set of known principles.    As a body of Knowledge has been gathered and arranged, and an Understandable summary or conclusion has been made from that arrangement, the choice of how best to communicate this information to others must be considered and, in the process, the subject being examined usually comes into a still sharper focus to the author of the propositional argument. At this point of clarity, the entire propositional argument can be called a "Statement of Rationale". That is, the conclusion, and - of equal importance - the thought processes behind that conclusion have been stated. In a modern context, what is often overlooked when considering the Wisdom Phase is that it can be more than a form of conceptual expression; i.e., of simply being the Art of Persuasion. In times past, civic matters were the major concerns, and the art of having others come to one's point of view was of paramount importance. Today, due to its product of mental clarity, rhetoric can also be used to provide a physical outcome by deducing a "Statement of Protocols" (a set of instructions) from the Statement of Rationale. A physical result or a man-ufactured artifact can be actualized by proceeding from Knowledge, to Understanding, and on through the Wisdom Phase. Again, this is a broader view of rhetoric than the view proposed by the ancients.    The elements of Systematic Wisdom are:   1. The five stages (or what are called "canons") of composition:   -   1] invention, 2] arrangement, 3] style, 4] memory, and 5] delivery.   2. The three types of discourse: deliberative (political), judicial (forensic), and ceremonial (epideictic). They are related to time: future, past, and present tense, respectively.    The Past and Future belong to men; the eternally present Now belongs to the gods. --Aristotle   3. The three appeals: rational, emotional, and ethical. Stated more succinctly in Classical terms: the rational is the Logos of the proposition or argument being presented, the emotional is the Pathos of the audience, and ethical is the Ethos of the author or orator of the proposition.    4. Types of proofs: inartificial (which is external, objective evidence), artificial (is subjectively devised or invented by the author of the proof or argument).    5. The topics --   The common topics: genus or kind, comparison, and consequence.   The special topics: the right and expedient (deliberative), the just and unjust (forensic), praise and blame (epideictic).    > Oration (Wisdom presented in formal speech)   6. Arrangement: the five parts of classical oration: introduction (exordium), statement of facts, confirmation, refutation, and conclusion (peroration).   7. Style: diction (selection of most appropriate words), sentences (length, type, and variety), rhetorical figures (schemes and figures of speech or tropes).   Skilled Wisdom authors can use the discipline in two senses. In its most fundamental form, Systematic Wisdom is the art of efficiently passing thoughts from one person to others. In its most effective form, it is the art of passing "validated" thoughts from one person to others.    The internet is a valuable adjunct to the concepts presented above. A simple word search on any of the technical terms listed should suffice to bring the proper clarification needed to implement a useful rhetorical dissertation.   A SUMMARY OF WISDOM / RHETORIC   > The work of Wisdom is the cogently expressed communication of Knowledge and Understanding. It leads to a higher levels of knowledge and understanding: the knowing of Knowledge and the understanding of Understanding.   > The effect of Wisdom is to demonstrate the usefulness of Knowledge and Understanding. That is, it is to display the insight - the thought process - in an article of persuasion or in the formulation of an outcome.   >Through the skilled use of rhetoric, all planned human activity can be communicated and directed. This is a two edged sword. Rhetoric / Wisdom can be directed to beneficial or to malevolent goals.   Let us end by reviewing some of the personal benefits which are inherent in the Trivium Method. The following will be most efficiently and effectively realized by using the trivium to train the mind for critical and creative thinking: 1] the path to a challenging, productive livelihood can be intelligently defined; 2] sound physical and psychological health, a judicious ethical standard, a high level of self esteem and the sense of well-being can be optimized; 3] rewarding personal relationships will manifest through the cultivation of beneficial ethics and well being; and 4] the astuteness to best discern the issues (i.e., the quality of information) regarding security will be developed. That is only the beginning. An adherent of the Method can acquire elevated levels of penetrating insight which would otherwise not be available. Through that insight he can also self-teach the contents of a propositional argument or of an entire, formalized subject of knowledge if he chooses to bring his - likewise - heightened focus to doing so. When a culture's government, education systems, and news media are not corrupt, the constant need for "fact checking" is not as critical as it is during the periods of dis-information and propaganda like that which we are currently experiencing. The trivium is the premier method for independent fact checking. The next two benefits of insight are corollaries: 1] a person is truly educated in that he can now thoroughly entertain any idea without necessarily embracing it (this was an observation made by Aristotle); and, 2] traveling somewhat in another direction, he becomes free from the prison of his own prejudicial opinions ... he obtains an open mind. Because the trivium harmonizes subjective thought with objective reality, he could, in fact, develop new and original propositional arguments and entire bodies of knowledge as competently as those respected people who have preceded him. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it. Across 4 studies, the authors found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor, grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile, they estimated themselves to be in the 62nd. Several analyses linked this miscalibration to deficits in metacognitive skill, or the capacity to distinguish accuracy from error.
