Vercel has become the infrastructure platform powering modern web development over the past several years, with companies from Stripe to Adobe to Runway all building their front ends on them. Today we're joined by founder and CEO Guillermo Rauch, who shares why Vercel has been uniquely successful in the fragmented (to say the least!) world of web development platforms. There are now more than 6 million Vercel users, 80,000 active teams, and users have grown 200% year-over-year. The company also crossed $100m in annualized revenue last May, and Guillermo shared with us that they've been growing at 80% since, and were recently valued at $3.25 billion. This is also a particularly interesting moment for Vercel. Last year they launched a new product, “v0”, which lets anyone create and deploy a working website simply by describing it in English and letting AI take care of the rest. Guillermo shares its origin story within the company (and insanely that it reached $2m ARR in the first 14 days!), and how it's changed their entire thinking about what's possible now with AI products. We also cover:How to build a business around an open source project (Next.js)How they balance both being a fast and nimble platform for startups with being a reliable platform for enterprisesGuillermo's unconventional approach to staying deeply technical as CEO at scaleLinks:VercelV0.devNext.jsSponsors:Vanta

Charles, Jacob, Joe, John, Mike, & Russell discuss the nuances of deciding what approach to use when integrating FileMaker data with a web front-end. Do you stick with WebDirect, branch out to using FM BetterForms, or commit to full-stack development? WebDirect has an advantage of proven simplicity. But it also comes with limitations, such as a non-standard web experience and licensing costs for public-facing applications.  FM Better Forms can be an excellent fit when you want to provide a polished, web-based user experience while still leveraging your FileMaker expertise. FM BetterForms can reduce development complexity by handling the back-end integration, deployment, and maintenance tasks that would normally be required in a full-stack web app approach. It also includes common front-end libraries - such as Tailwind, Bootstrap, and Lodash - that are kept updated for you. Drawing from their experience at Cars.com—a platform handling high traffic and concurrent users—they discuss the technical and organizational challenges of scaling applications, managing microservices, and implementing effective observability practices. The conversation highlights the pivotal role observability plays in diagnosing incidents, anticipating system behavior, and asking unplanned questions of a system. Zack and Ethan explore tracing, spans, and the unique challenges introduced by LiveView deployments and WebSocket connections. Tharaka is Head of Partnerships at Kontos, a zk-powered omnichain abstraction layer. Kontos aims to break down barriers in Web3 by providing solutions that simplify cross-chain interactions through a user-friendly interface. Why you should listen Kontos is a blockchain platform that simplifies cross-chain transactions by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and chain abstraction technologies. This approach allows users to interact with multiple blockchains without needing an in-depth understanding of the underlying complexities. The platform's AI Agent, powered by a large language model, identifies users' transaction intents and automates complex cross-chain operations, enhancing efficiency and user experience. Launched on June 30, 2023, by Zecrey Labs, Kontos aims to break down barriers in the Web3 space by providing solutions that simplify cross-chain interactions through a user-friendly interface. The platform offers a unified interface for interacting with blockchains, abstracting accounts, assets, behaviors, and gas fees. This design enables users to focus on their intentions without worrying about the complexities of gas fees, cross-chain bridges, network switching, or account management. Kontos also provides a Web App and a Telegram Bot, offering users multiple avenues to access its services. The Web App serves as a gateway to the Kontos protocol, providing secure and intuitive management of digital assets in decentralized finance. The Telegram Bot allows users to interact with Kontos' AI Agent directly through the messaging platform, facilitating seamless transactions and market analysis. By integrating AI and chain abstraction, Kontos lowers the barrier to using Web3 technologies, promoting the widespread adoption of blockchain and attracting more users and developers to the ecosystem. Guillermo Rauch is founder and CEO of Vercel, a company that provides the developer tools and cloud infrastructure to build, scale, and secure a faster, more personalized web. He was interviewed by Ben Casnocha, co-founder and general partner at Village Global, an early stage venture capital firm backed by some of the world's most successful entrepreneurs.Takeaways:- Any modern cloud-native app is a nexus of services that all work together to create a coherent interface for the user. For example, Auth0 handles login, Stripe handles billing, React is used for the interface, among many more services all working in concert. Vercel helps ensure that the user has an amazing experience no matter what services are all working together on the back end.- Guillermo tells the story of open source Unix winning out over proprietary versions of Linux, even though the proprietary versions had an early lead. He suggests that over the long term, open source will win, more often than not, and that the same story will likely play out when it comes to AI models, with open source models winning out in the end.- When it comes to investing, Guillermo loves to bet on someone who has been obsessed with a topic for years and years. He recounts the story of the Auth0 team who had written books and given talks and spent years of their lives just on logging in and logging out. He also says that he prefers a leadership team that lives and breathes a company's problem space. He says that he's allergic to the idea of a professional leadership team swooping in at a certain stage.- Rauch was born and raised in Argentina. He says that he has a sense of urgency and that tomorrow is not promised that stems from his childhood experience growing up in Argentina. He tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg keeping the Sun Microsystems logo on the back of the Facebook sign at their headquarters when they moved in to cultivate a sense that tomorrow is not promised to anyone.- Guillermo believes in giving his team leads radical ownership of their products. He provides the leads with frameworks that explain clear principles for how they build products at Vercel but beyond that he gives the leads a long leash and a sense of ownership over the product. Thanks for listening — if you like what you hear, please review us on your favorite podcast platform.Check us out on the web at www.villageglobal.vc or get in touch with us on Twitter @villageglobal.Want to get updates from us? Michael #1: Solara UI Framework via Florian A Pure Python, React-style Framework for Scaling Your Jupyter and Web Apps Solara lets you build web apps from pure Python using ipywidgets or a React-like API on top of ipywidgets. These apps work both inside the Jupyter Notebook and as standalone web apps with frameworks like FastAPI. See the Examples page. Based on Reacton By building on top of ipywidgets, Solara automatically leverage an existing ecosystem of widgets and run on many platforms, including JupyterLab, Jupyter Notebook, Voilà, Google Colab, DataBricks, JetBrains Datalore, and more. Brian #2: Coverage at a crossroads Ned Batchelder is working on making coverage.py faster. Includes a nice, quick explanation of roughly how coverage.py works with trace function and arcs used for branch coverage. And how trace slows things down for lines we know are already covered. There are cool ideas from SlipCover that could be applicable. There's also sys.monitoring from Python 3.12 that helps with line coverage, since you can disable it for lines you already have info on. It doesn't quite complete the picture for branch coverage, though. Summary: jump in and help if you can read it anyway for a great mental model of how coverage.py works. Michael #3: “Virtual” methods in Python classes via Brian Skinn PEP 698 just got accepted, defining an @override decorator for type hinting, to help avoid errors in subclasses that override methods. Only affects type checkers but allows you to declare a “link” between the base method and derived class method with the intent of overriding it using OOP. If there is a mismatch, it's an error. Python 3.12's documentation Makes Python a bit more like C# and other more formal languages Brian #4: Parsing Python ASTs 20x Faster with Rust Evan Doyle Tach is “a CLI tool that lets you define and enforce import boundaries between Python modules in your project.” we covered it in episode 384 When used to analyze Sentry's ~3k Python file codebase, it took about 10 seconds. Profiling analysis using py-spy and speedscope pointed to a function that spends about 2/3 of the time parsing the AST, and about 1/3 traversing it. That portion was then rewritten in Rust, resulting in 10x speedup, ending in about 1 second. This is a cool example of not just throwing Rust at a speed problem right away, but doing the profiling homework first, and focusing the Rust rewrite on the bottleneck. Extras Brian: I brought up pkgutil.resolve_name() last week on episode 388 Brett Cannon says don't use that, it's deprecated Thanks astroboy for letting me know Will we get CalVer for Python? it was talked about at the language summit There's also pep 2026, in draft, with a nice nod in the number of when it might happen. 3.13 already in the works for 2024 3.14 slated for 2025, and we gotta have a pi release So the earliest is then 2026, with maybe a 3.26 version ? Saying thanks to open source maintainers Great write-up by Brett Cannon about how to show your appreciation for OSS maintainers. Be nice Be an advocate Produce your own open source Say thanks Fiscal support On topic Thanks Brett for pyproject.toml. I love it. Michael: The Shiny for Python course is out! It's an all new That Real Blind Tech Show. It's a threesome as someone on the show does not know how the calendar and reminders work on the iPhone.   We start off insulting a member of our show, because we like to make fun of each other. It makes us feel more secure about our own lives.   We kick our stories off discussing that Atari recently purchased Intelivision, and yes this article is from 2024. Which leads us to a discussion about the potential rise of the Audio Video Game.   Thanks to Autio audio can now entertain you on those long road trips.   We were thrilled to learn friends of the podcast OKO has been nominated as a finalist for the 2024 Apple Design Awards.   Be My A.I. in partnership with Microsoft launched their all new PC Desktop which can currently be found in the Windows Store.   It's then back to the Mac as we discuss the A.I. Mac plug in TypeAhead.AI.   Could the double level airplane seat be coming to an airline near you?   And of course right before we start recording Apple and Open A.I. reportedly have come to an agreement to have ChatGPT on iOS 18. We then got some leaked reports about Project Grey Matter out of Apple for iOS 18. In iOS 18, A.I. will give you more control to control specific features of apps using Siri, but don't expect this feature to Abe available this year, why would you? The conversation then turns to should apple be announcing features that will not arrive for close to a year?   Of course Washington wants new A.I. laws to protect Hollywood and famous rich people. And on a related note, who knew that celebrity voice erotica is all the rage these days! We then dive in to what voice would be our ideal VoiceOver voice.   We then finally get to our yearly look back of wWDC 23. We discuss if we are any closer to being able to talk with our animals?   We then talk about the latest update on the Mac and Apple breaking QuickNav yet again. Seriously we will eventually get in to our Look Back of WWDC 23. We discuss Passkeys,    New voices, point and speak, personal voice, new auto correct and spelling features, and of course improved diction. Seriously how much worse has dictation gotten on the iPhone in the last year. We got a new Name Drop feature. We got a Journal app. We got Air Tag Sharing. We got new interactive widgets to the iPad. PDFs are now in Notes and supposedly more editable. Web Apps and Widgets came to the Mac. We got safari profiles, or did we? Snoopy and Woodstock came to the Apple Watch. Apple Health will now send you surveys and make suggestions when you are not feeling well.
