Mind Won't Switch Off? — Racing Thoughts Meditation for Anxious Nights | 4-7-8 Breathing If your mind won't switch off — even though your body has clearly clocked out — this guided meditation is for you. Whether it's 2am or the middle of an ordinary afternoon, racing thoughts don't wait for a convenient time, and this episode meets you exactly where you are with 4-7-8 breathing, a calming cognitive visualisation, and three daily caring tips you can use anytime the loop starts again. For the nights it gets harder than ten minutes can fix, download Anchored on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/anchored-panic-anxiety/id6785035669 — it's the same voice, free, and there whenever your mind decides it needs help. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett, today's session uses 4-7-8 breathing — in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8 — a technique drawn from years on the road as a paramedic, where changing what the body is doing is often the fastest way to change what the mind is doing. From there, a gentle visualisation reframes anxious thoughts as letters arriving through a letterbox: you don't have to open every one, read it end to end, or write back. You are the house, not the letter. ⏱️ Time Chapters* 00:00 – Welcome: when your mind won't switch off* 01:28 – Introducing 4-7-8 Breathing (from years as a paramedic)* 02:17 – Breathing practice, round one* 04:10 – Breathing practice, round two* 04:29 – The letterbox: thoughts aren't instructions* 05:31 – Today's Gentle Affirmations* 08:17 – Three Daily Caring Tips* 09:28 – Coming back, stretch and release* 09:47 – Outro & be kind

Carlos Castaneda sold more than 10 million books to readers who thought they were buying anthropology. Real fieldwork. A real Yaqui shaman named Don Juan, teaching a real Westerner how to see. None of it happened. Castaneda made it up, and for years almost nobody in the press called him on it.I read all of those books as a teenager. Grew up on them, the way a lot of people my age did, right alongside Kung Fu reruns and books about Gurdjieff my neighbor suggested I read. So, when I heard that Ru Marshall, a nonbinary writer and artist I met years ago at a cult conference, had just published a full biography of the man, I wanted them on the podcast immediately. The book is called American Trickster: The Hidden Lives of Carlos Castaneda, and it took Marshall almost twenty years to write it.Here's the part most casual fans never learn. While Castaneda was cranking out sequels, he was also running an actual cult, a small group of women out of a house in Westwood that he called his witches. That story ends with human remains found in Death Valley. This is a fascinating discussion and will be thought provoking for sure.

Monday Morning Anxiety — Calm the Dread of the Week Ahead | Vagus Nerve Breathing Meditation  Monday morning anxiety has a weight all of its own — that heavy, anticipatory dread that arrives before your feet have even touched the floor. In this 10-minute guided meditation, Calming Anxiety host Martin helps you put the whole week down and meet Monday with a nervous system that is working with you, not against you. Today's practice uses vagus nerve breathing — a slow nasal inhale, a gentle hold, and a long, soft exhale — to press the brake pedal on your stress response. Three guided rounds, followed by a warm golden-light body scan and a set of gentle affirmations for anxiety relief, work anxiety and the Sunday scaries that spill into Monday. It closes with three practical daily caring tips you can carry into the day. Whether you're listening in bed, on the train, in the car park, or in the ten quiet minutes before you walk in through those doors — this is deep relaxation and breathwork you can use anywhere. The pressure to be endlessly happy is leaving the next generation more anxious and isolated than ever. In his new book, The Happiness Crisis: How Adversity Can Build a Resilient and Joyful Next Generation, Dr. Jonathan Eckert calls for a culture shift that we can begin at home. How do we embrace adversity and see the value of challenges, instead of becoming parents who make everything too easy? Dr. Eckert explains the biblical connection between joy and struggle, and why removing adversity — "snowplow parenting" — prevents kids from developing resilience. Arlene and Jon work through real-life scenarios, including a child facing bullying and a teen caught using AI to cheat on a school assignment. The conversation closes with practical steps for helping kids rediscover purpose and joy through community and faith. Dr. Jonathan Eckert is a former middle school teacher and basketball coach who worked in the Bush and Obama Department of Education. He has a PhD from Vanderbilt, and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Baylor Center for School Leadership. 02:35 Why the pursuit of happiness backfires 03:29 How phones and comparison fuel kids' unhappiness 04:57 Snowplow parents vs. building "muscles around the backbone" 09:15 Roleplay: what to say when a kid is bullied at school 14:40 Roleplay: when a teen gets caught using AI to cheat 21:18 My teacher story: destructive vs. productive struggle 28:17 The "man in the arena" quote and the ABCs of joy Connect with Dr. Jonathan Eckert at jonathaneckert.org or on Linkedin. Waking Up at 3am — Anxiety Relief to Get You Back to Sleep | Extended Exhale Breathing Waking up at 3am with anxiety is one of the loneliest experiences there is — your eyes open on their own, your heart is faster than it should be for someone lying perfectly still, and your mind has already found the one unfinished thought it saved up especially for now. This 10-minute guided meditation is built for exactly that hour. Martin explains why it happens: there is a small, ordinary rise in cortisol in the early hours meant to get your body ready for morning, and when you're anxious that rise arrives a little louder and wakes you. It isn't a warning. It isn't a sign. It's chemistry arriving early. From there the session uses extended exhale breathing — a gentle breath in, a brief pause, and an out-breath always longer than the in — because breathing out directly, mechanically slows your heart rate. It's the simplest somatic tool there is, and the one that works best lying down in the dark, when you don't want to count hard or hold anything. A warm light at the centre of the chest, gentle affirmations for sleep anxiety and insomnia relief, and three practical caring tips follow. If you drift off partway through, that's the point — let the voice fade. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett.  ⏱️ Time Chapters * 00:00 – Cold open: awake at three in the morning* 00:39 – Why you wake: the early-hours cortisol rise* 01:23 – Welcome to Calming Anxiety with Martin* 01:39 – Anchored: the nightlight and offline sleep sessions* 02:24 – Settling: letting the pillow take the weight* 03:36 – Extended exhale breathing: the science* 04:17 – Guided rounds: longer out than in* 05:37 – A warm light at the centre of your chest* 06:08 – Tonight's gentle affirmations* 08:19 – Drifting off, or coming gently back* 09:01 – Your three daily caring tips* 09:43 – Closing thoughts and sign-off

What is faith? Faith isn't a feeling, and it isn't wishful thinking — it's trusting in divine facts about who Jesus is and what He has done. In this message from 1 Corinthians 13:13, Pastor Phil Hopper explains how faith, hope, and love form the foundation of the A-Life, the abundant life Jesus promised in John 10:10. You'll hear why every person is a person of faith, and why the real question isn't whether you believe but what your faith rests on. Biblical faith is never blind faith; it stands on rational, tangible, verifiable evidence for God and for the resurrection of Jesus. Richard Elliott, a deputy manager in residential childcare in England, talks about his mother's childhood inside a Catholic convent and, later, a Catholic laundry in the north of England during the mid-twentieth century. Richard describes his mother's four years of separation from her family and her sisters as a child, her return home, an attack by a boyfriend at fifteen that led to her being sent away a second time, and two years of unpaid labor inside a Catholic laundry with no contact with her family. Richard also discusses discovering the full extent of his mother's story only recently, while interviewing her for a book they wrote together, and how his own work in residential childcare has changed the way he understands her. The conversation closes on Richard's petition calling on the UK government to open a public inquiry into the treatment of children in Catholic institutions in England. Richard and his mother published their book under the pen name M. Duffy. It is titled In My Own Words: Memories of the Catholic Convents and is available on Amazon. At the center of Patrick Radden Keefe's new book, “London Falling,” is a mystery: In 2019, a young man named Zac Brettler disappeared, and a few days later his body was found in the Thames River. Surveillance footage showed what appeared to be Zac jumping off the balcony of a nearby luxury tower, leading some to speculate that he had taken his own life. His family, though, didn't quite believe that theory; though troubled, Zac, in their view, hadn't seemed suicidal. Then the Brettlers learn that before his death, Zac had pretended to be the rich son of a Russian oligarch, and fallen in with a dangerous crowd in London's criminal scene. So what happened? That's what Keefe attempts to answer in “London Falling.” On this episode of the Book Review Book Club, the host MJ Franklin discusses the book with his colleagues Jennifer Szalai and Sadie Stein. You can follow along and add your own comments to the discussion here. Calming Anxiety sits with the quiet, exhausting reflex of chronic apologizing, the fear that if you're agreeable enough, easy enough, small enough, nobody will ever be angry with you. We slow the body first with 4-2-6 breathing, in for four, hold for two, out for six, creating the same small pause Martin often had to teach frightened patients as a paramedic: the space between the trigger and the reaction. For daily support beyond this episode, download Anchored on iOS, with Android arriving in a couple of weeks.

A slow season may be exactly what your business needs. Every business owner experiences slow business seasons when ideas stop flowing, outreach goes nowhere, cash feels tight, or the systems and team you built suddenly feel messy. It's easy to panic during these seasons, especially when we're constantly told to keep pushing, stay consistent, and never slow down. But slow business seasons are a normal part of growth. I've experienced plenty of them in my own staging business—from quiet summer and winter seasons to credit card debt, overflowing inventory, and moments when I wondered if my business would ever gain momentum again. Instead of seeing these periods as failures, I learned to use them as opportunities to step back, look at what wasn't working, and decide what needed my attention. When business slows down, your first instinct might be to push harder, but sometimes you don't need more pressure. You need grace and space. Take a look at what's working. Identify the gaps. Clean up a process. Revisit your numbers. And instead of trying to fix everything at once, focus on your next step. Books, podcasts, coaching, and conversations with other business owners can also help spark new ideas and motivation when you're feeling stuck. Most importantly, remember that the season you're in is temporary. If your business feels like a boulder you're pushing uphill right now, take a breath. You may not need to push harder. You may simply need to pause, pay attention, and decide what comes next. What if the person you cannot get over was never actually your person? We tend to give enormous weight to chemistry and connection, especially when we find someone we like who seems to like us back. That feeling can be powerful enough to make us overlook a harder truth: connection alone does not create a relationship. Without commitment and compatibility, chemistry can keep you emotionally invested in someone who is never actually choosing you. Matthew Hussey breaks down the four levels of a relationship, from attraction to compatibility, and explains why so many people get stuck at the stage that feels the most exciting. He also explores why unfinished relationships can become so difficult to let go of. The future you imagined can start to feel more real than the relationship itself, keeping you attached to potential instead of what is actually happening. Matthew Hussey is a relationship coach, bestselling author, speaker, and host of the Love Life podcast. His work focuses on dating, heartbreak, confidence, communication, and helping people build healthier relationships by paying attention to how someone actually shows up, rather than relying on chemistry or potential alone. What's Discussed: (00:00) Why connection and chemistry can feel incredibly important without actually creating a relationship. (01:27) The four levels of a relationship: admiration, mutual attraction, commitment, and compatibility. (03:46) Why someone choosing not to be with you cannot be "your person." (05:07) How heartbreak can come from grieving the future you imagined rather than losing an actual soulmate. (07:58) Why unfinished relationships and "what could have been" can occupy so much mental space. (09:20) How romantic fantasy can become a form of avoidance that keeps you from participating in your real life. (12:37) Why real relationships are built through commitment, difficulty, and repeatedly choosing one another. (13:47) How to intentionally move on by removing reminders, limiting updates, and stopping the person from remaining part of your everyday life.   Thank You to Our Sponsors! Friendship problems rarely arrive with a handy instruction manual. A child comes home hurt, angry, or feeling left out, and a parent is left wondering whether to listen, offer advice, step in, or quietly confiscate every phone in the house. In this episode of The Whinypaluza Podcast, Rebecca Greene talks with award-winning author, speaker, and parenting resource expert Jessica Speer about helping children and teens navigate the complicated social world of friendships, peer pressure, group dynamics, screens, and middle school.Jessica explains that many friendship struggles are not evidence that a child or friend is “bad.” Often, young people are still learning communication, conflict resolution, boundary-setting, and other social-emotional skills. Parents can help by listening without immediately trying to fix the problem, practicing difficult conversations, and teaching children to notice when repeated harmful behavior may require a stronger boundary.Rebecca and Jessica also discuss why social challenges feel more intense in a digital world. Group chats and social media can keep friendship drama going long after the school day ends, leaving children with more opportunities to compare, assume, ruminate, and feel excluded. Jessica offers practical guidance for talking about technology without making every conversation negative, preparing children for peer pressure, and creating a safe plan that allows them to call home when they need help.At the heart of the conversation is the power of co-regulation. When a child comes home emotionally overwhelmed, a parent's calm presence can help settle the child's nervous system. Children do not always need an immediate solution. They need to feel seen, heard, and supported by a steady adult who believes in them.In This Episode, You Will Learn✓ How to distinguish normal friendship conflict from repeated behavior that may require stronger boundaries.✓ Why tweens and teens may remain in unhealthy friend groups because belonging feels developmentally essential.✓ How phones, group chats, and social media can intensify exclusion, comparison, assumptions, and anxiety.✓ Why a parent's calm nervous system can help an emotionally overwhelmed child co-regulate.✓ Which physical and behavioral changes may signal that a child needs additional support.Jessica leaves parents with an honest and hopeful reminder: children do not need perfect parents who solve every social problem. They need caring adults who keep learning, stay connected, model healthy responses, and take care of their own well-being too.Listen to The Whinypaluza Podcast on Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-whinypaluza-podcast/id1534167756If this episode helps your family, please like, follow, share it with another parent, and leave a review.About Jessica SpeerJessica Speer is an award-winning author, speaker, and parenting resource expert who helps children, teens, and families navigate friendships, social challenges, digital life, and growing up with confidence. Where Has All My Energy Gone? — High-Functioning Anxiety & Exhaustion Relief | Guided Meditation If you've ever collapsed onto the edge of the bed at the end of a perfectly "fine" day and thought, "where has all my energy gone? I didn't even do anything today," this episode is for you. Calming Anxiety sits with the exhaustion of high-functioning anxiety, the quiet cost of holding everything together while everyone else sees someone coping just fine. We slow the body first with the extended exhale, four counts in and eight counts out, gently unwinding the shallow, high-chest breathing that builds up during a long day of performing calm, the same kind of over-breathing Martin worked with often on ambulance call-outs as a paramedic. For daily support beyond this episode, download Anchored on iOS, with Android arriving in a couple of weeks.
