The Moroccan writer Mohamed Choukri grew up poor and illiterate on the streets of Tangier in the waning years of colonialism. He told the story of his childhood in his autobiographical novel For Bread Alone – El Khubz El Hafi in Arabic, Le Pain Nu in French. Choukri went on to write much more, chronicling life in post-independence Morocco during the “years of lead,” and the marginalized underclass of Tangier: its barflies, prostitutes, petty criminals, day-to-day survivors. We spoke to scholar and translator Jonas El Busty about the unique subversiveness of Choukri's work, and why it still resonates so strongly today. We also talked about the reception of Choukri's work, and the power dynamics embedded in its translation. SHOW NOTESJonas El Busty is a professor of Arabic at Yale University. He has translated Choukri's short story collection Tales of Tangier, as well as the third installment of Choukri's autobiography, Faces, and is the editor, alongside Roger Allen, of the scholarly anthology Reading Mohamed Choukri's Narratives: Hunger in Eden. For Bread Alone was translated by Paul Bowles, in a process that remains contentious to this day. Choukri's writing about some of the famous Western writers – Jean Genet, Tennessee Williams, Paul Bowles – who visited or lived in Tangiers is collected in In Tangier Ursula recently wrote an article in the New York Review of Books on Choukri, Tangier, colonialism and nostalgia. Advertising on Google, Facebook, Instagram, and various social media sites can be exceptional exposure for your books and possibly lead to more sales, but which platforms are better for garnering sales as compared to visibility, and what types of images and copy work best for each site? Also, how long is the ideal time to run an ad? Ingram Content Group's Senior Manager, Consumer Products & Services Development Erin Cox visits “Inside Independent Publishing (with IBPA)” to answer these questions and more!PARTICIPANTSErin Cox has almost two decades of marketing and development experience, primarily in the book industry. The mic has been officially hijacked! For this special Audiobook Lovin Series episode, fan favorite narrator Curtis Michael Holland takes over hosting duties and trust us, he understood the assignment. Curtis sits down with debut author Blair Hanson to spill the tea on their brand-new release, America's Not So Sweetheart, a YA Contemporary. They chat about the story's inspiration, behind-the-scenes audiobook moments, what makes a character “unlikeable” (and why we love them anyway), and the magic of pairing voice with words. Expect laughs, thoughtful convo, and maybe a little chaos (because why not it's June, it's hot, and it's Audiobook Month, baby). Master character development with these five must-read books that transform static characters from boring to brilliant. You've created characters with compelling backstories, but somehow, they still feel... flat. They move through your plot but don't feel like real people. Here's the thing: character development is what makes readers fall in love with your story, not just read it. But it's also one of the trickiest parts of fiction writing. That's why today, I'm sharing five books that have completely transformed my approach to character development. And they've also helped hundreds of my students create characters readers are totally invested in. You'll hear me talk about things like:[01:17] Why most characters feel flat even when they have clear goals and motivations (and which book can help you unlock the missing piece)[06:22] My favorite resource for understanding character arcs, whether you're writing a positive arc, a negative arc, or a flat one[08:16] Which book can help you understand your villain's emotional wounds—and why this might be more important than perfecting your protagonist's backstory[10:35] A book that'll help you make readers feel your character's emotions without ever naming a single feeling on the page[00:00] My go-to resource for learning how to marry your plot with your characters (this one's especially good for pantsers who want a little more structure!)If your characters feel static despite having detailed backstories, or if you're struggling to show meaningful character growth throughout your story, this episode will give you the exact resources you need to create characters readers will never forget.

In this Bible Story, Jehoshaphat becomes king over Judah and rules righteously. He sends out teachers and priests to care for the people, and teach them God's ways. However, his alliance with Ahab the King of Israel proves to be unwise, as Ahab leads them into an unwinnable battle. This story is inspired by 1 Kings 22 & 2 Chronicles 17-19:3. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is 2 Chronicles 17:10 from the King James Version.Episode 126: Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, spent his time fortifying cities and tearing down idols. He also sent teachers and priests to the surrounding territories so that they might know God. What the King was doing became so influential that even other nations such as the Philistines took notice and sent tribute. Jehoshaphat wanted to extend this peace to his brothers in Israel, so he made an alliance with King Ahab. During their celebration, King Ahab requested Jehoshaphat's help in reclaiming some territory. But Jehoshaphat wanted to hear from the Lord first. So Micaiah was called in and prophesied that this battle would be King Ahab's last.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. Angelina and Thomas begin the episode with some thoughts on their Aristotelian approach to literature as seen in this series of episodes. After sharing their commonplace quotes, they dive into their discussion of the last few chapters of the book. Some of the ideas they consider are how the entire plot is a series of symbols, alchemy and the allegory of the soul, and the figure of the “wildman” in the literary tradition. They also go over the characters of the centaurs, the significance of the unicorn, more references to Greek mythology, how Harry exemplifies the “chest” of the well-ordered man, and the great importance of the philosopher's stone as a Christ symbol.  Visit HouseofHumaneLetters.com for classes with Angelina, Thomas, and other members of their teaching team. Intuitive Connection with Victoria Shaw

If you follow this podcast, you know how much I love the sun! In fact, I love it so much that I uprooted my life and moved to sunny Southern California. But it turns out, the little slice of heaven where I live is not always sunny. In this episode, with the help of the guides, I explore how our preferences shape our experience, how contrast can actually bring clarity, and why joy doesn't have to wait for the perfect moment. This is a gentle reminder that the joy we seek is already inside of us, even on the cloudy days.
