If I were to ask you if your life ever felt tranquil, you would probably do one of two things: bust out laughing or look at me like I was from another planet.I get it, I really do. Which is why I'm so excited to have the author of one of my absolute tippy-top recommended books with me today. Laura Vanderkam is a time management expert, mother of five, and the author of Tranquility by Tuesday: 9 Ways to Calm the Chaos and Make Time for What Matters. Laura suggests that to bring more tranquility to our abundant, unpredictable lives, we don't need a perfect schedule, what we need is a resilient schedule. In the book, she outlines nine ways that will help us manage the chaos and live joyful, sustainable lives. It sounds much more accessible, right? Today, we're going to talk about how we can actually achieve tranquility in our lives, even in the busiest phases of our lives. In this episode, you'll hear: How to reframe the way you think about how much time you have (hint: it might be more than you think!) Why doing something three times a week counts as a habitThe rule that gets the most resistance, and why sticking to it is so essentialLearn more about Sarah Mackenzie:Read-Aloud RevivalWaxwing BooksSubscribe to the NewsletterFind the rest of the show notes at: readaloudrevival.com/laura-vanderkam Join us for the upcoming Circle with Sarah Retreat: Happy Homeschooling

From Pews to Planet: Faith-Based Steps to Better Creation Stewardship In this episode of the Good Faith Podcast, host Curtis Chang and guest Dr. Katherine Hayhoe—Chief Scientist at The Nature Conservancy and a committed evangelical Christian—explore why Christians and churches should care about climate change as a biblical "love your neighbor" issue rooted in justice for the poor and vulnerable. Hayhoe explains how political polarization and "solution aversion" fuel climate skepticism. She introduces the "Six Americas" framework and offers practical guidance for having hopeful, effective conversations that connect climate action to what people already care about. Dr. Hayhoe offers actionable next steps for individuals and congregations—like sharing solutions, starting church initiatives, and leading with hope instead of doom—so Christians can faithfully steward God's creation. 05:23 - Dr. Hayhoe's Faith Journey and Science 07:12 - Experiencing Creation's Vulnerability 09:17 - Is Climate Change a Justice Issue? 10:42 - Encountering Christian Climate Skepticism 18:06 - Christian Organizations and Climate Action 24:35 - Connecting Climate to Personal Values A 28:23 - Navigating Difficult Conversations 33:31 - What Are the "Six Americas" of Climate Attitudes? 43:02 - Scientific Evidence and Human Impact 48:15 - Focusing on Solutions, Not Just Science 50:03 - What Is One Action Step for the Unsure Christian? 53:00 - What Is One Action Step for the Committed Christian 55:00 - Are There Practical Church-Based Climate Actions? Dry January often raises big questions: how much alcohol is actually safe, and do you need to stop drinking altogether to protect your health? In this episode, world-leading alcohol expert Professor David Nutt explains why alcohol ranks as one of the most harmful drugs to society, how even “normal” drinking can affect your health, and what the science really says about cutting back without giving it up completely. David, a neuropsychopharmacologist and former UK government drug adviser, explains why alcohol was ranked the most harmful drug overall in a landmark comparison of 20 drugs, how harm rises sharply as drinking increases, and unpacks common beliefs like red wine being “good for you”. The conversation also covers the social benefits of alcohol and why the goal isn't necessarily to stop drinking, but to drink with awareness. If you drink at all - whether it's a glass most nights or more on weekends - this episode helps you understand where the real risks begin, and how to make alcohol work for you, not against you. And for listeners using dry January as a reset, David shares practical, science-based advice on how to cut down safely and sustainably. If you're pausing and reflecting this dry January, what might change when you start drinking again? And which habits are worth leaving behind for good? Unwrap the truth about your food
What does it really mean when someone looks at your career and says, “You should be doing more”?In this episode of ComicLab, Brad and Dave respond to a pointed listener question that cuts straight to the bone: If they have the skills, the experience, and the ideas — why haven't they launched even more projects? The answer isn't defensive or dismissive. Instead, it becomes a clear-eyed breakdown of creative bandwidth, sustainability, work-life balance, and the invisible labor that propels up a long-term comics career. From Patreon and newsletters to storefronts, commissions, podcasts, and family responsibilities, they unpack why “doing enough” is often misunderstood from the outside — and why restraint can be a strategic choice, not a lack of ambition. The conversation then pivots to one of the trickiest problems any humor writer faces: How to judge your own work when readers don't get the joke. How many confused comments are just statistical noise—and when do they signal a real problem in execution? Brad and Dave dig into the uncomfortable middle ground between ego and humility, exploring how to listen to feedback without letting it derail your voice, and how to improve clarity without sanding off what makes your work distinctive. It's a nuanced, experience-earned discussion about ramps, chasms, audience expectations, and why “it happens to everyone” is not an excuse — but also not a death sentence. If you've ever felt pressure to produce more, or struggled to decide whether reader confusion is a warning sign or just the cost of taking creative risks, this episode offers hard-earned perspective from two cartoonists who've been navigating those exact questions for decades.TakeawaysCreative projects often take a backseat due to time constraints.Cartoonists manage a heavy workload that includes multiple projects.Balancing creativity with administrative tasks is crucial for success.Feedback from readers can help improve comic writing.Self-editing is a continuous process for comic creators.Reader confusion can indicate a need for better communication in comics.Communication is key in the artistic process. High performers often fear peace will cost them their edge. In this episode, Julie Holly reframes wholeness as a strategic advantage — showing how identity coherence increases clarity, execution, and sustainable effectiveness. What if wholeness didn't slow you down — but actually made you more effective? In this episode of The Recalibration, Julie Holly addresses the quiet resistance many high-capacity humans feel when the conversation turns toward peace, integration, or inner alignment. Beneath performance pressure and decision fatigue is often an unspoken fear:If I stop fragmenting myself… will I lose what's made me effective? This episode dismantles that fear and reframes wholeness as a strategic upgrade — not a personal softening. In this episode, you'll explore:Why performance pressure often comes from identity fragmentation, not workloadHow role confusion and constant self-management quietly drain energyThe hidden cost of success without fulfillmentWhy fragmentation is inefficient — even when it looks like strengthHow peace reduces internal friction and sharpens executionWhy effectiveness improves when identity becomes coherentPsychology + Nervous System InsightJulie draws on psychology and nervous system integration to explain:How identity-based motivation becomes cleaner when you're one person across rolesWhy internal division increases cognitive, emotional, and identity loadHow wholeness removes background effort — freeing capacity without disengagingThis is not burnout caused by failure. It's fatigue caused by misalignment.A Living Example of Integrated ExcellenceJulie points to Denzel Washington as an example of drive without internal division. His presence demonstrates:Authority without tensionIntensity without urgencyExcellence sustained by coherence, not pressureIf you've been successful but tired…If achievement feels heavier than you expected…If you sense peace might actually sharpen your edge…This episode offers clarity, permission, and a grounded path forward.Today's Micro RecalibrationWhere does fragmentation cost me more energy than the task itself?Explore Identity-Level Recalibration→ Join the next Friday Recalibration Live experience → Take your listening deeper! Though the United States has been heralded as a beacon of democracy, many nineteenth-century Americans viewed their nation through the prism of the Old World. What they saw was a racially stratified country that reflected not the ideals of a modern republic but rather the remnants of feudalism. American Dark Age reveals how defenders of racial hierarchy embraced America's resemblance to medieval Europe and tells the stories of the abolitionists who exposed it as a glaring blemish on the national conscience.Against those seeking to maintain what Frederick Douglass called an “aristocracy of the skin,” Keidrick Roy shows how a group of Black thinkers, including Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Hosea Easton, and Harriet Jacobs, challenged the medievalism in their midst—and transformed the nation's founding liberal tradition. He demonstrates how they drew on spiritual insight, Enlightenment thought, and a homegrown political philosophy that gave expression to their experiences at the bottom of the American social order. Roy sheds new light on how Black abolitionist writers and activists worked to eradicate the pernicious ideology of racial feudalism from American liberalism and renew the country's commitment to values such as individual liberty, social progress, and egalitarianism.American Dark Age reveals how the antebellum Black liberal tradition holds vital lessons for us today as hate groups continue to align themselves with fantasies of a medieval past and openly call for a return of all-powerful monarchs, aristocrats, and nobles who rule by virtue of their race. Keidrick Roy is Assistant Professor of Government at Dartmouth College. He has received national attention through media outlets such as CBS News Sunday Morning and the Chicago Review of Books and appears in the HBO documentary Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches. He has curated two major exhibitions at the American Writers Museum in Chicago on Black American figures, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, and Ralph Ellison. Richard Spegal|author of Eternal Nights and the Wolves & Ravens trilogyIntroIs a storyteller who weaves together magic, mystery, and the darker shades of imagination. His worlds—such as those in Eternal Nights and the Wolves & Ravens trilogy—challenge what we believe, force hard decisions, and explore how much of truth can survive in shadows.Richard serves as an officer in the Pennsylvania National Guard and has a long history with the 82nd Airborne Division. Choosing to build a family, he left active combat service and now balances life with a wife, four daughters, and his writing. His entry into writing started from a simple frustration: he saw adult readers being underserved in paranormal and fantasy genres—vampires, magic, supernatural beings—but more often in formats that relied on youth-driven tropes. So he set out to write the books he wanted to read—ones with dark corners, moral risk, real emotions, and stories that don't sugarcoat the consequences. When he's not penning a new chapter or plotting the next twist, Richard draws strength from the ordinary moments: family dinners, quiet nights, research into myth and folklore. Each fragment of life becomes an echo in his stories. He believes that every hidden truth, every choice, every transformation matters—and that fiction has the power to ask what we dare not say aloud.Link:https://richardspegal.com/Tags:Army,Author,Book Publishing,Books,Fantasy BooksOccult,Paranormal,Personal JourneyRomance Novels,Young Adult Fiction,Live Video Podcast Interview,Podcast,Phantom Electric Ghost PodcastSupport PEG by checking out our Sponsors:Download and use Newsly for free now from www.newsly.me or from the link in the description, and use promo code “GHOST” and receive a 1-month free premium subscription. The best tool for getting podcast guests:https://podmatch.com/signup/phantomelectricghostSubscribe to our Instagram for exclusive content:https://www.instagram.com/expansive_sound_experiments/Subscribe to our YouTube https://youtube.com/@phantomelectricghost?si=rEyT56WQvDsAoRprRSShttps://anchor.fm/s/3b31908/podcast/rssSubstackhttps://substack.com/@phantomelectricghost?utm_source=edit-profile-page

This week, Julia and Steve welcome guest host Sam Adams to deconstruct the aggravating, yet strangely charming, table tennis phenom on the make that is Marty Supreme. Played with “BDE off-the-charts” (Steve's words) by Timothée Chalamet, the unceasingly shameless hustler may just be an avatar for our age. Speaking of avatars, we can't avoid discussing Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest installment of James Cameron's immersive mega-franchise. Once again, the big blue folks peopling Pandora drew boku bucks at the box office… but do the Avatar films have any “cultural impact”? And what does “cultural impact” even mean? New Yorker staff writer Michael Schulman steps into the cultural cage match to debate this long-simmering internet argument. On this week's bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, the hosts take up a listener question about “cultural bran muffins,” the bits of culture you know would be good for you if only you could get them down. The hosts confess their bran secrets. Endorsements Steve: The essay "Two Pins and a Lollipop" about Judy Garland by Bee Wilson in the London Review of Books. Sam: The album Penthouse by the band Luna, particularly the song "Chinatown." Julia: Slate's beloved annual tradition Movie Club which for its 2025 edition gathers film critics Bilge Ebiri, Alison Wilmore, Justin Chang, and our very own Dana Stevens for a rollicking exchange about the year in film. --- Email us your thoughts at culturefest@slate.com. Ask Me How I Know: Multifamily Investor Stories of Struggle to Success
High performers often feel drained even when life is working. In this episode, Julie Holly explains why always being “on” exhausts your nervous system — and how identity-level recalibration restores energy without disengaging from leadership. Why do high performers feel tired even when nothing is technically wrong? In this episode of The Recalibration, Julie Holly explores the hidden cost of always being “on” — a state that often looks like strength, leadership, and responsibility, but quietly drains capacity over time. Many high-capacity humans experience a unique kind of exhaustion that doesn't come from overwork alone. It shows up as decision fatigue, role confusion, success without fulfillment, and a persistent sense of being depleted despite competence and momentum. This episode names what's happening beneath the surface: vigilance — a nervous system state designed for short bursts of readiness that has quietly become a way of life.Julie unpacks the science behind vigilance and explains how three invisible loads stack over time:cognitive load from constant decision-makingemotional load from holding others and managing impactidentity load from sustaining the version of yourself that keeps everything workingThis isn't burnout caused by failure or weakness. It's fatigue caused by adaptation. The episode also highlights Rosalind Brewer as a living example of calm authority in high-pressure environments. Her leadership demonstrates that presence and regulation do not dilute power — they stabilize it.Throughout the conversation, Julie differentiates Identity-Level Recalibration (ILR) from mindset tactics, productivity hacks, or surface-level rest strategies. ILR doesn't ask you to disengage or do less. It works at the root — recalibrating identity so the nervous system no longer relies on tension to maintain effectiveness. This is the recalibration that makes every other tool work again. If you've ever felt capable and depleted at the same time…If success feels heavier than it should…If you're longing for relief without losing your edge…This episode offers clarity, permission, and a path forward.Today's Micro RecalibrationWhere am I staying “on” because it's familiar — not because it's required? No fixing. No forcing rest. Just awareness — because awareness gives your system new options.Explore Identity-Level Recalibration→ Join the next Friday Recalibration Live experience → Take your listening deeper! In this episode, Emily and I are kicking off 2026 talking about fresh starts. Why we love them, why they matter, and why they don't always go the way we hope. There's something about a new year that invites us to pause, reflect, and ask what kind of people we actually want to become. I'm sharing 8 books you should read in 2026 - not as a checklist, but as tools that can help shape your thinking, your faith, and the direction of your life. Even one or two of these could make a real difference. If you're stepping into this year with hope, questions, or a desire to grow, I hope this episode will encourage you. Send us a textStart with the truth: technology keeps changing the book world, but the love of reading isn't going anywhere. That's our springboard for a rich, candid conversation with publishing analyst and author Thad McIlroy about what AI can actually do for writers, publishers, translators, and readers—and where it crosses lines that matter. We trace his arc from bookstore floors to indie publishing, investigative journalism, and desktop publishing, then into the fast-moving landscape of modern AI.We get practical fast. Want a sharper pitch, a cleaner description, better metadata, and smarter keywords? Use AI as a drafting partner—then apply human voice and judgment. Thinking about acquisitions or submissions? Run a secure, opt-out upload and ask the model who the audience is, what comp titles make sense, and how to position the work. We talk tools—Claude for colloquial nuance, Gemini for reasoning, ChatGPT with training opt-outs—and how to protect manuscripts while you explore. We also tackle the hard edges. Headlines predicting the “death of authors” are noisy, but real concerns remain: training on copyrighted books without compensation, contracts that quietly assign AI rights, and the limits of AI detection tools. Thad breaks down recent rulings vs. piracy, separates legal allowances from ethical responsibilities, and shares what to renegotiate now so creators aren't boxed out later. On translation, we sketch a hybrid workflow—machine draft, human craft—that can open doors for books that would never otherwise travel, while preserving the nuance great translators bring.Through it all, we return to the point of the industry: a reader choosing a book, a poet on a shelf, an indie bookseller who knows your taste. AI can help us market smarter, iterate faster, and reach farther—but it shouldn't replace the human spark that makes literature worth saving. If that balance resonates with you, follow along, share this conversation with a friend, and leave a review to help more book lovers find the show.Support the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links
