The stolen Nissan Frontier was recovered in Austell by Cobb County Police, who arrested at least one suspect found with stolen credit cards. Cobb County Police responded to the scene around 12:45 a.m. and found Williamson with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being transported to a hospital and receiving aid, he was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation, and police urge anyone with information to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 770-499-3945. He was wearing a dark sweatshirt and navy blue work pants and driving a 2003 silver Toyota 4Runner (GA tag 499WPR), last detected near Lawrenceville and Social Circle. Eaton, who left his medication behind, suffers from dementia and atrial fibrillation. A Mattie’s Call has been issued, and anyone with information is urged to call 911 or contact police. Wyland’s Ford Explorer collided with a Subaru while turning, leading to further collisions with a Chevrolet and a Toyota. Wyland and the Chevrolet driver, Michelle Pack, were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Subaru and Toyota drivers were unharmed. The crash remains under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb County Police. Trained by Tails of Hope, a Georgia nonprofit, Bentley assists first responders after stressful or traumatic incidents. Born in July 2022, he has completed over 300 hours of training and holds multiple American Kennel Club certifications. The department introduced Bentley on Facebook, inviting the community to welcome him as he starts his important role in providing support to those in need. STORY 5: Powder Springs to Opt Out of Property Tax Cap Powder Springs plans to opt out of a new voter-approved property tax cap, which limits annual home value increases to the previous year's inflation rate. Instead, the city offers a flat homestead assessment freeze, providing greater tax relief. This decision aligns with other local governments like Cobb County and the cities of Kennesaw and Marietta. Break: STORY 6: Driver Killed After Crashing into Austell Traffic Pole A man driving a white 2015 Maserati M157 was killed after crashing into a traffic signal pole in Austell on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m. on East-West Connector at Felton Hill Road. The driver veered out of his lane, entered a right turn lane, and exited the roadway, hitting a traffic signal pole and control box. He was ejected and trapped under the vehicle, and pronounced dead at the scene. Cobb County Police are investigating and urge anyone with information to call 770-499-3987. STORY 7: 3 Escape, Several Animals Saved from House Fire in Mableton A house fire in Mableton on Tuesday afternoon displaced three residents, who safely evacuated. Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services rescued several animals and extinguished the fire, preventing damage to nearby homes. The 500 block of Cardell Circle Southeast is closed until further notice. STORY 2:     1 Dead, 1 Injured in Austell Shooting Over the weekend, a shooting at a home in Austell resulted in one death and one injury. Cobb County Police responded to the incident on Linworth Boulevard around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Jeffrey Moore, 54, of LaGrange, Georgia, died from his injuries, while another 44-year-old man from LaGrange is in stable condition. Police arrested 42-year-old Courtney Rashun Woullard of Austell at the scene. Woullard faces charges including murder and aggravated assault and is held without bond. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Cobb Police Major Crimes Unit. STORY 3:  Gun Brought to Marietta Preschool In an email to families, Christine Ramirez, director of Marietta's Emily Lembeck Early Learning Center, reported that a child brought a loaded handgun to preschool. The Marietta Police Department found that the child's regular backpack was broken, and the parent unknowingly sent the child with a different bag containing the weapon. There was no intent to harm, and the gun was not displayed in class. The investigation is ongoing to determine if charges are necessary. Across Georgia, a record 4 million voters cast early ballots, surpassing previous records. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger highlighted the success of the early voting period, noting that 92 of Georgia's 159 counties exceeded 50% turnout. Despite the minimal risk, mandatory Tuberculin Skin Tests will be administered on Tuesday, with follow-up checks on Thursday. Those unable to test on-site must provide results from a private healthcare provider before returning to school. A positive test indicates TB exposure, necessitating a chest x-ray to check for active disease or the need for preventive medication. The U.S. TB rate increased to 2.9 per 100,000 in 2023. The delay stems from a new funding agreement under review since September, which would have the county cover most of the $4 million needed. Initially, the county was to fund the project, but a 2020 agreement shifted costs to the foundation. The project cost has risen from $2.5 million in 2015 to $7 million today. Only $300,000 has been spent on design, with $3.2 million reserved. The memorial will feature a 120-foot sculpture and a park, serving as a tribute and educational tool. Construction is expected to take two years once funding is secured. The library, opened in 1990, will see its first major update in over 30 years, particularly on the second floor, which houses adult and reference services. Renovations include new study and conference rooms, bathroom upgrades, and improved layout. The project begins in July 2025, lasting 6-8 weeks, during which the upstairs will be closed. The library serves 36,000 people and offers over 25,000 books and various programs. STORY 2:     Veterans Memorial Crash Leaves Adults, Children Injured A crash at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Highway and Dodgen Road in Cobb County resulted in multiple injuries on Sunday afternoon. Timothy Rouse, 28, ran a red light while driving a 2020 Nissan Altima with passengers Danielle Washington and two infants. Aguilar Peregrino, 23, driving a 2012 Ford Explorer with two young children, was turning left with a green light when Rouse's vehicle struck his car. All occupants were hospitalized, and the incident is under investigation. Witnesses are urged to contact the Cobb County Police. STORY 3:  Georgia Tech to kickoff against Virginia Tech at Noon Georgia Tech will face Virginia Tech at noon on October 26, broadcast on the ACC Network. This marks the 20th meeting between the teams, with Georgia Tech holding a 4-4 record against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, including a win in their last encounter. Before this matchup, the Yellow Jackets (5-2, 3-2 ACC) will host Notre Dame (5-1) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. She misused her authority to issue unauthorized checks and gave herself a pay raise, also purchasing over $11,000 in Apple products with company funds. As recovery and cleanup continues in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Georgia, Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday as a Category 3 storm. STORY 3:  Fentanyl Trafficking Fugitive Caught in Cobb County Ashley Dawn Crislip, 34, from Kennesaw, was arrested as a fugitive on fentanyl trafficking charges from Trumbull County, Ohio. She was found in Cobb County on September 22 at an apartment in the Lakeside Vista complex. Charged as a fugitive, Crislip was taken into custody shortly after midnight and is held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond. Training for staff has been ongoing, with over 200 deputies certified. Additional devices like the TRP, VKS PRO, TAC-SA PRO, and Breacher are also in use. These tools aim to de-escalate confrontations, reduce injuries, and save lives, with the launchers distinctly colored to avoid confusion with firearms. The initiative reflects a shift towards non-lethal policing methods. STORY 5:  Apartment Complex Opens Near Town Center Mall The Manor Barrett, a five-story, 347-unit apartment complex in Kennesaw, celebrated its opening near Town Center at Cobb. Owned by The Related Group Management, it offers 204 one-bedroom, 127 two-bedroom, and 16 three-bedroom units, with rents from $1,700 to $2,100. Amenities include a pool, gym, co-working spaces, and a sports lounge with a gaming simulator. The pet-friendly complex also features a dog park and pet spa. The emergency, initially declared on August 7, now extends to October 6. The extension addresses severe dysfunction in processing and managing court filings, compounded by a problematic transition from the old CRIS system to the new Icon system. While there has been some progress, issues such as scheduling difficulties, inaccurate notices, and backlog remain. Taylor's office faces staffing shortages and other challenges, with ongoing criticism and a state investigation into her handling of passport fees. STORY 2:  Commission Kills ‘Home Rule' Map, Keeps Richardson On Tuesday night, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners decided to abandon its controversial "home rule" map, opting to use the state map instead, following a court ruling declaring the home rule map unconstitutional. However, the board voted against declaring Commissioner Jerica Richardson's seat vacant, allowing her to remain in office for now. There is ongoing debate about whether Richardson's term will end on December 31 or extend until her successor is elected. The situation remains legally ambiguous, with differing opinions on how long Richardson can serve. The board is moving forward to resolve the confusion and conclude the long-standing dispute over the district maps. STORY 3:  1 Injured in Tritt Elementary School Fire A fire at Tritt Elementary School early Tuesday morning, caused by an HVAC issue, led to one person being hospitalized for smoke inhalation. No students were in the building, as it was early in the day. Cobb Fire and Emergency Services quickly extinguished a small fire from an AC unit. Students were relocated to Hightower Trail Middle School for the day. Regular school operations are expected to resume the next day, with updated dismissal plans provided to parents. Curtis's 2020 Honda Civic crossed the median into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2019 Toyota Rav-4 driven by Dominique Najhawan, 27, of Grovetown. Curtis was pronounced dead at the scene, while Najhawan suffered minor injuries and was taken to Kennestone Hospital. The cause of the lane deviation is under investigation. Cobb County Police are seeking additional information from witnesses. STORY 5:  Patricia B. Terwilliger Family Foundation Sponsors Habitat Home On August 24, construction began on a Habitat for Humanity home in Austell, sponsored by the Patricia B. Terwilliger Family Foundation. Established in 2003, the foundation, led by Patricia and her daughters Tracy and Bonnie, focuses on supporting women and children's issues. The exact schedule depends on whether a December runoff occurs for the November general elections. If no runoff is needed, primaries would be held on February 11, 2025, with the general election on April 29, 2025. If a December runoff does happen, primaries would move to March 18, 2025, and the general election to June 17, 2025. This decision follows a legal dispute over a home rule map that led to the cancellation of previous primaries and general elections for these seats. Commissioner Jerica Richardson's and Commissioner Monique Sheffield's terms end on December 31. STORY 2:    Police: Rep. Seabaugh Refused Sobriety Tests State Rep. Devan Seabaugh, R-Marietta, was arrested for DUI Thursday night after a crash involving a cyclist on Memorial Drive in Atlanta. Seabaugh, who refused sobriety and breath tests, denies being intoxicated, claiming he had only one beer hours earlier. A GSP report noted he exhibited signs of intoxication and was unsteady. The cyclist suffered minor injuries and was unsure if he was hit. Seabaugh, driving with three other passengers including fellow state reps, faces multiple charges. His case will be heard on September 4. Refusal to take sobriety tests may lead to a license suspension under Georgia's implied consent law. STORY 3:  Police Share Record of Suspect in Officer-Involved Shooting Nathain Jenkins, 32, of Valdosta, was shot and killed by Cobb police at a Smyrna Walgreens on Friday evening during an altercation. Jenkins, who was armed, had multiple outstanding warrants from Lowndes and Fulton counties. Authorities are investigating a possible link between Jenkins and a previous vehicle pursuit that occurred weeks earlier. Cobb Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer confirmed the officers involved have been placed on leave and expressed condolences. The agreement would start with the cities splitting $6.5 million in the first year, increasing by $500,000 annually. This comes after a dispute over reimbursement for essential services led to mediation between the county and cities. The agreement must be approved by the commission and all six city councils by October 31 to avoid state sanctions affecting grants and permits. STORY 5:  Man Indicted in Slaying of KSU Student Samuel El Harris, 21, has been indicted on murder charges by a Cobb County grand jury in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Alasia Franklin at Kennesaw State University on May 18. Harris faces charges including felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault. The shooting occurred after a dispute outside the Austin Residence Complex. Harris, Franklin's ex-boyfriend, is accused of hiding her cellphone and car after the crime. Franklin, a KSU student government senator, was remembered for her dedication and service. Harris remains in Cobb County Jail without bond. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: INGLES 7 STORY 6:   Bounce for Pounce Scores for Cat Rescue Efforts Pounce de Leon hosted its “Bounce for Pounce” tennis tournament at Lost Mountain Tennis Center on August 11, raising funds for their cat rescue group. Twenty-four players competed, with James Smith and Kim Keller emerging as top scorers, winning prizes organized by Lisa Gardner. Pounce de Leon rescues homeless and abandoned cats, working with Petco stores and 50 foster homes across Atlanta. Since its founding in 2023, the group has adopted 192 cats and provided trap-neuter-release services for 250 cats. The event, supported by Sprouts Farmers Market and Costco, contributes to addressing cat overpopulation in Georgia. STORY 7:     Motorcyclist Killed in Maxham Road Collision Alejandro Garcia-Zavala, 26, was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in Austell, Cobb Police report. Riding a 2016 Honda CBR 650 southbound on Maxham Road, Garcia-Zavala lost control near Pontiac Circle around 10:36 p.m., striking a curb and guardrail before being ejected into a creek. The motorcycle came to a stop in the median. Garcia-Zavala was pronounced dead at the scene. Kennesaw Woman Dies After Crashing into Pole A tragic accident in Kennesaw early Friday morning has claimed the life of a local woman. Cobb County Police report that 20-year-old Amy Wamweya was driving north on Barrett Parkway, near Stilesboro Road, just before 5 a.m. when she crossed a raised concrete median and crashed into a utility pole on the southbound side. Authorities pronounced Wamweya dead at the scene. Investigators are currently looking into why Wamweya lost control of her vehicle and failed to maintain her lane. The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. This prestigious event educates rising seniors about federal government operations. Both boys participated in Georgia Boys State, learning local and state governance. Pool, aspiring to be a lawyer like his grandfather, focused on youth advocacy. Blackwood, inspired by family and TV, won roles including district attorney at Boys State. Their selections for Boys Nation were emotional for their families. The event includes mock campaigns, lectures, and meetings with senators and potentially the president. STORY 3: Family of Hit-and-Run Kennesaw Victim Calls for Justice The family of Ryan Ellis, a Kennesaw man struck in a hit-and-run while riding his bicycle, is seeking justice. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Marietta Man Sentenced for COVID-19 Relief Scam John Gaines, a Marietta man, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for his role in a scheme to steal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gaines pleaded guilty to money laundering, admitting involvement in obtaining an $806,710 fraudulent PPP loan for a fictitious business, Gaines Reservation and Travel. The business had no employees or payroll expenses. Alongside two others, including Teldrin Foster and Carla Jackson, Gaines participated in a larger scheme that fraudulently obtained millions in PPP loans. In total, 23 individuals have been convicted and sentenced for their roles in the scheme, which exploited relief funds meant for struggling businesses. The case was investigated by the FBI and IRS. STORY 5: Man Injured in Stolen Vehicle Crash on Riverside Parkway An Atlanta man, Jamal Muhammad, sustained life-threatening injuries in a single-vehicle crash on I-20 near Riverside Parkway in Austell. Muhammad was evading police after driving a stolen car, initially spotted by a Fulton County officer on Fulton Industrial Boulevard. He fled onto I-20 westbound in the wrong direction and lost control near the Riverside Parkway northbound offramp in Cobb County. The vehicle struck a tree after spinning out on the grass shoulder. Muhammad was transported to Grady Hospital for treatment. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Cobb County Police at 770-499-3987. The truck caught fire, and Beck was pulled out and taken to a hospital, where he later died. This action is in coordination with the Party for Socialism and Liberation in Atlanta. Notably, the protests have adhered to peaceful standards, abiding by university guidelines for unregistered events. A significant march took place through the campus, with university police providing traffic control without direct intervention. The student organizers, while focusing current efforts on supporting their counterparts at Emory University facing arrest, hinted at possible encampments during KSU's upcoming commencement. University officials are yet to comment. This protest is part of a larger wave of campus demonstrations across the country, calling for educational institutions to sever financial connections with Israeli-linked entities. STORY 2: Man Gets Decade Behind Bars for Stalking West Cobb Woman Michael Lydon Strong, 43, from Dallas, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stalking his former girlfriend and her 13-year-old son in late 2020 in west Cobb. Already serving six years for selling cocaine, Strong was found guilty of aggravated stalking and disorderly conduct. The victim and her son had sought a restraining order against Strong due to his violent behavior. He violated the order by breaking into their home while they slept. The son called 911, and officers arrived while Strong was still inside. Strong's earliest release date is Oct. 12, 2030. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. emphasized the office's commitment to protecting domestic violence victims. STORY 3: Smyrna Man Arrested for Murder Bobby Pegues, 40, of Smyrna, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing Travis Johnson, 48, in Marietta. Pegues faces charges including aggravated assault and murder. The incident occurred on Lorene Drive around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Johnson later succumbed to his injuries at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Pegues is held without bond at the county jail. STORY 5: Whataburger Seeks Approval for New East Cobb Location Whataburger, a fast-food chain expanding in Cobb County, is eyeing a fifth location at the former O'Charley's site in east Cobb. The proposed 7,000-square-foot building at Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads includes a two-lane drive-thru, which conflicts with land-use restrictions set in a 1999 settlement. These restrictions prohibit fast-food restaurants or drive-thru services. Whataburger's request for a site plan approval, not rezoning, will go before the Cobb Board of Commissioners on May 21. The chain already has two locations in Kennesaw and plans for another in Acworth, pending construction. The inaccurate information was initially attributed to the Secretary of State's office by Cobb Elections Director, Tate Fall. However, this claim was refuted by Mike Hassinger from the Secretary of State's Office, who stated that it was the Cobb Elections Office's responsibility to ensure the accuracy of the dispatched cards. Fall admitted to the error, citing her newness in the role and unfamiliarity with the process as reasons. She clarified that while the Secretary of State's Office printed the cards, her office oversaw their distribution. The error occurred because the data used for printing was extracted before the precinct lines were updated by Cobb Elections. While both offices acknowledge some responsibility for the error, they agree that the primary goal is to ensure voters have accurate information. Fall confirmed that the mistake has been identified, rectified, and informed to the voters. STORY 2: Biden, Trump romp to primary victories in Georgia In the recent Georgia Democratic Primary, President Joe Biden clinched a resounding victory, securing renomination with an impressive 96% of votes cast. On the Republican side, former President Donald Trump also emerged victorious in a decisive win, although he has yet to secure the nomination. This result paves the way for a repeat contest between Biden and Trump, marking the first such occurrence since 1956. Despite the high-profile nature of the election, voter turnout was relatively low. It is estimated that only around 10% of registered voters participated in the primary. This trend aligns with historical precedents, as the last instance of a former president running for the White House dates back to 1912, and the most recent example of an ex-president challenging an incumbent was in 1892. STORY 3: Smyrna Man Accused of Fatal Stabbing Surrenders to Police Randy Graham, a 50-year-old resident of Smyrna, voluntarily surrendered to the authorities following an alleged incident in which he fatally stabbed 40-year-old Herman Robinson. The incident occurred near Wellstar Windy Hill, prompting a response from the Cobb County Police who discovered Robinson suffering from multiple stab wounds. Unfortunately, Robinson was later pronounced dead at Kennestone Medical Center. Graham initially left the crime scene but subsequently contacted 911 to turn himself in. The investigation into this case remains active, with the Cobb County Police Department urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Robinson's family has been notified of his tragic demise. Currently, Graham is being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. He is facing several charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid has indicated potential for some changes to be implemented shortly but stressed the importance of achieving consensus. Among the proposed changes is an increase in the number of public speakers allowed, albeit with reduced speaking time. A contentious proposal involves banning audio or video media presentations during public comments, due to concerns about deep fakes. This proposal has elicited varying responses from commissioners, with some questioning its implications for free speech. Other suggested changes include imposing limits on presentations and refining the language of resolutions. While Cupid recognized the necessity for a comprehensive revamp of the rules, she proposed a gradual approach to their implementation. She expressed gratitude to those involved in the process and reassured residents that their feedback is highly valued. STORY 5: Residents Flood Commission with Criticism Over Stormwater Fee Residents have voiced their opposition to a proposed stormwater fee put forth by the Cobb Board of Commissioners, raising concerns over potential double taxation and financial stress. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid has defended the fee, arguing that it is equitable as it is tied to the area of impervious surfaces that contribute to stormwater problems. The proposed fee would differ for residential and non-residential properties, with fees for residential properties expected to range between $2 to $12 per month. Critics contend that this fee would place undue burden on tenants and unfairly target certain subdivisions. Commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Keli Gambrill are against the fee, citing issues related to water transfer and questioning its effectiveness in addressing stormwater challenges. The county plans to solicit public opinion before making a final decision, with a vote expected in March. If approved, the fee would become effective from August 1st. The incident unfolded when a Chrysler minivan was rear-ended by an Acura. The impact led the Acura to lose control and subsequently collide with an Audi, which then crashed into a Freightliner semi-truck. The deceased in the incident have been identified as Carl Moore, the driver of the Acura, and James Mettle, a passenger within the same vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The Audi's driver, Brandon Weaver, and a passenger, Monica Wilburn, sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital. Cobb County Police Department is currently investigating the incident. They are encouraging anyone who witnessed the crash or has any relevant information to come forward to aid in their investigation. STORY 2: Marietta Superintendent to Host Town Hall for Parents of New Kindergarteners Marietta Schools Superintendent, Dr. Grant Rivera, has planned a virtual town hall meeting intended to address inquiries from parents of prospective kindergarteners. The session will discuss registration processes, resources available, and future district happenings. Drawing on his own experiences as a parent, Rivera acknowledges the blend of excitement and concern parents may experience as their child embarks on their kindergarten journey. R&B singer Jeffrey Osborne is being sued by concertgoers, Danielle Buchanan and Meneva Currie, for emotional distress. During a show in Los Angeles, Jeffrey Osborne asked a fan to sing his song, You Should Be Mine. The R&B crooner asked for a white person to sing the song and Buchanan obliged while Currie recorded her friend Buchanan sing. Now, they are saying they were utterly embarrassed and are suing for $2 Million. Also, in Georgia, there was a massive teen fight near the Six Flags Over Georgia, that ended with gun fire being exchanged between the teens and the Cobb County Police. The crash resulted in the deaths of two teens, Gabriel Escandon, 17, and Esteban Cortez-Rendon, 18. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office reported that the Mazda 6, carrying five occupants, left the roadway and hit a tree. Roman and two other teens were injured. Speed was identified as a contributing factor. Roman, a student at Hillgrove High School, faces charges including vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, and license violation. He is currently in custody without bond at the Cherokee County jail. STORY 2: Marietta Man Survives Gunshot to Head in Attempted Robbery at Motel 6 A Marietta man, Garrett Osteen, was shot in the head during an attempted robbery while dropping off a friend at a Motel 6 on Delk Road on Jan. 14. Five armed individuals, linked to a recent carjacking at Kennesaw State University, demanded money from Osteen and his friend Willie Ruffin. Osteen attempted to drive away but was fired upon, sustaining a head injury. Remarkably, Osteen recovered quickly and provided witness testimony the following day. Four suspects are in custody, with one juvenile outstanding. The arrests, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, are part of a larger crackdown on a series of carjackings and robberies. Collaboration between agencies and advanced technology have facilitated swift communication and coordination in combating crime. STORY 3: Teens Charged With Bringing Guns to Pebblebrook High School Two Mableton teenagers, Malik Ta'Veon Watkins, 18, and Heaven Marrow, 17, were arrested for bringing handguns, one of which was stolen, to Pebblebrook High School on Jan. 31. Watkins allegedly concealed a loaded Glock 44 handgun in Marrow's backpack to evade detection by staff. Both face charges including felony carrying weapons within a school safety zone and felony theft by receiving firearm. Marrow was arrested on-site by Cobb Schools Police, while Watkins was apprehended by Cobb County Police later. Maria Murray, 61, was driving a 2017 Mazda CX-5 when the boy, outside a marked crosswalk, entered the road. The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. Emergency services transported the injured boy to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital of Atlanta. The driver stopped after the collision. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Cobb County Police at 770-499-3987. STORY 2: Pope High Student One of Two Killed in Crash Two teens, including a Pope High School junior, died in a single-vehicle crash on Towne Lake Parkway in Woodstock. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office reported that a Mazda 6, carrying five occupants, left the road and hit a tree. Gabriel Escandon, 17, from Marietta, and Esteban Cortez-Rendon, 18, from Woodstock, died in the crash. Three others were injured, with one in serious condition. Speed is considered a contributing factor. The Cobb County School District expressed condolences, providing additional counselors for support. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office stated that the investigation into the tragic accident is ongoing. STORY 3: Marietta Teachers to Receive Bonuses Friday All eligible staff in the Marietta school district will receive bonuses this Friday, as approved by a unanimous 7-0 vote during a school board meeting. The bonuses are an extension of Gov. Brian Kemp's teacher retention bonuses, with the state covering most of the costs. The district is contributing over $400,000 to ensure bonuses for most staff. Full-time employees will receive a $1,000 bonus, while part-time staff will get an extra $500. The bonuses, a token of gratitude for staff dedication, will not apply to contracted or temporary workers. Birrell Police K-9 Annex. Funded by $130,000 from Birrell's contingency fund, the state-of-the-art facility will house up to eight of the department's 11 dogs and features climate control and a dog-washing station. Birrell, a dedicated supporter of the K-9 unit, also used $15,500 for a new K-9 named Chief. The kennel's dedication recognizes Birrell's two-decade commitment to fundraising for the Cobb Police K-9 unit and her ongoing support for these vital law enforcement partners. STORY 5: Three Cobb Schools Identified as Underperforming by State Three Cobb County School District schools were identified as needing additional support by Georgia's Department of Education. City View Elementary in Mableton is in the bottom 5% statewide, Cobb Horizon High School has a graduation rate at or below 67%, and Brumby Elementary in Marietta has at least one consistently underperforming student group. The list is mandated by federal law under the Every Student Succeeds Act, categorizing schools as Comprehensive Support and Improvement, Targeted Support and Improvement, or Additional Targeted Support and Improvement. The goal is improvement collaboration, not stigmatization, and the district is committed to enhancing education for these students.   We'll be back in a moment    Break: DRAKE – INGLES 5   STORY 6: Fire Damages Marietta Restaurant A fire broke out at a Cook Out restaurant on Austell Road in Marietta, with no reported injuries. The cause is believed to be electrical, as per Chris Smith, spokesman for Cobb Fire and Emergency Services. The restaurant suffered minor damage, and cleanup and repairs are expected to take a few days. Upon arrival, small flames were observed on the building's roof, prompting the evacuation of the restaurant. Two fire engines responded to the incident. STORY 7: Little Free Library in Marietta The Cobb Collaborative organized a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new Little Free Library (LFL) at North River Church of Christ in Marietta. The event was attended by Executive Director Irene Barton, Marietta City Ward 1 Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson, and leaders from various organizations. Little Free Library, a nonprofit, aims to provide books to communities globally. The LFL operates on a "Take One, Leave One" principle, promoting free 24/7 book accessibility. Cobb Collaborative, a community partner, continues its mission of establishing LFLs in Cobb County. North River Church will steward the Park Street LFL, contributing to literacy initiatives in Marietta. The incident occurred on Ben King Road in Kennesaw, near Town Center mall. Pugh was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in critical condition and succumbed to her injuries on Sunday. Cobb County Police charged Cox with vehicular homicide. Cox allegedly admitted to drinking three beers at a holiday party before the crash and refused a voluntary breath sample or blood draw. The investigation is ongoing. STORY 2: Chase Ends with Cobb Police Car Atop Truck in Midtown A police chase, starting near Osborne High School and ending in Midtown Atlanta, resulted in a Cobb police car on top of a Jeep pickup truck. The suspect, Robert Shirling of Dahlonega, was hospitalized with minor injuries. The chase began after Shirling allegedly attempted to ram an officer with his truck during a traffic stop. The Georgia State Patrol reported that the chase involved surface streets and the interstate, with Shirling hitting multiple vehicles. A PIT maneuver by a Cobb police officer caused the Jeep to roll over, with the patrol car on top. Howell Mill Road was closed for approximately two hours for investigation. STORY 3: Marietta Woman Accused of Domestic Dispute Stabbing Nia Danielle Pryor, a 26-year-old Marietta woman, is accused of stabbing a man during a domestic dispute over infidelity allegations at the Walton Ridge Apartments. The incident occurred on November 25, and Pryor allegedly stabbed the victim with a folding knife in the hand, leg, and torso. A roommate witnessed the altercation, where both parties were throwing items, and saw the victim's injuries. The victim was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Regional Hospital. Pryor faces charges of aggravated assault with a weapon and was arrested on November 25, subsequently released on a $20,000 bond. Ficklin was arrested on November 22 and is currently held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. STORY 5: 'You Are Safe Here and You Are Important,' Smyrna Mayor Says at Hanukkah Celebration During a Hanukkah celebration hosted by Chabad of Smyrna Vinings, Mayor Derek Norton assured the Jewish community of safety in Smyrna and expressed love and support. The event included a menorah-lighting ceremony, crafts, music, balloon animals, and traditional snacks. Rabbi Avremel Zaltzman and his wife coordinated the celebration, bringing the Jewish community together. Attendees appreciated the event as a source of hope and unity, especially in challenging times. The lighting ceremony emphasized the symbolism of bringing light into the world through good deeds. Multiple 911 calls reported Theodore's actions. Smyrna Police requested assistance from Cobb County Police to meet Theodore at an intersection, but he repeatedly refused to drop his gun and pointed it at officers. As he advanced towards the officers with the firearm raised, they shot him. Theodore was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is investigating the incident, with the case file to be reviewed by the Cobb Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office. STORY 2: Georgia Council on Literacy Upholds Marietta as State ModelThe Georgia Council on Literacy, a 30-member panel created by the General Assembly to improve literacy in Georgia, is determined to address the state's low literacy rate despite discouraging statistics. Around 56% of Georgia's third graders struggle with proficient reading. Marietta City School District was highlighted as a model for success, implementing the science of reading in its curriculum and investing in teachers and students. The district offers after-school tutoring for students who scored below grade level on standardized tests, hired more reading specialists, and partnered with the Atlanta Speech School for literacy improvement. STORY 3: Acworth Man Gets 20 Years for Producing Child PornA 32-year-old Acworth man was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to producing child pornography. Billy Calhoun convinced multiple minor girls he met online to send him sexually explicit videos and images by pretending he was a teenage boy. Law enforcement became aware of Calhoun's activities after a local middle school reported the exploitation of one of its students. Investigators discovered that Calhoun had received explicit content from multiple minor girls and found hundreds of other child pornography images and videos. Canton police chief announces retirement Canton Police Chief Stephen Merrifield is set to retire later this fall, according to the city's announcement. Merrifield has held the position since January 2020 and has had a distinguished career spanning over 39 years in law enforcement, including a 33-year tenure with Cobb County Police and service in the United States Army. During his leadership, Merrifield managed the department through the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing public safety and front-line responders. He focused on diversity initiatives, improved community-police relations, and introduced events like the Canton Multicultural Festival and Kickball with a Cop. Merrifield also oversaw several department improvements, including the addition of the rank of captain, fleet upgrades, safety enhancements, and better training initiatives. Merrifield will stay with the department during a round of promotions before retiring. The city plans to host a retirement ceremony and announce details about filling the vacant position. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.   Commercial : CU of GA   STORY 1 shooting     A shooting incident at a north Cobb home resulted in one man's death and another being injured, according to the Cobb County Police Department. The incident claimed the life of 28-year-old Marietta resident Anthony Jones, Jones, along with two other individuals, attempted to rob two men who responded by defending themselves with gunfire. Police responded to a residence on Buckline Court in the Noonday area after getting a report of a person being shot. They discovered a black male, identified as Jones, lying in front of the home with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. Investigations indicate that Jones, along with 20-year-old Darius Butler from Cartersville and an unnamed third suspect, had planned to commit an armed robbery against a 25-year-old man from Kennesaw and a 24-year-old man from Woodstock. The intended victims defended themselves, shooting Jones and Butler during the incident. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. Butler, injured by gunfire, is now in police custody. He faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, and murder. Keep an eye on MDJonline.com for more developments in the case.         Story 2: gas   As Memorial Day weekend approaches, gas prices in Cobb County have seen a slight decrease over the past six weeks. The average price per gallon in Cobb is currently at $3.27, down from $3.37 in April, according to AAA. Georgia's average price per gallon has also gone down by 13 cents compared to a month ago. Georgia motorists are now paying around $49 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline, which is nearly $14 less compared to last year.   AAA reports a decline in gas demand and a decrease in domestic gasoline stocks, which could potentially lead to further reductions in pump prices. AAA advises drivers to maintain their vehicles, combine errands to limit driving, and drive slower to save fuel. As is generally the case, prices typically rise during the summer months due to increased travel and demand.       Story 3: Fire   The Marietta Fire Marshal's Office suspects that a semi-truck was intentionally set on fire earlier this week. Responding to multiple 911 calls, the Marietta Fire and Police Departments arrived at a shopping center on Cobb Parkway South in the early morning. The fire was swiftly extinguished, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. Investigators believe that the incident involved vandalism, with several trucks and trailers targeted. Specifically, a 2018 Peterbilt and a 2017 Freightliner were set ablaze. Anyone who has information about the incident or the individual responsible is urged to contact Lt. Richard Franklin of the Marietta Fire Marshal's Office or the Georgia Arson Control Hotline. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. This lounge offers a quiet and comfortable space for mothers and infants attending Braves games and other events at the park. Located between the Left Field Gate and Section 141, the air-conditioned lounge features rocking chairs, recliners, a changing table, TVs, and expert advice on breastfeeding from Northside Hospital's lactation specialists. Danielle Bedasse, Braves vice president of community affairs, expressed gratitude to Northside Hospital for their support in creating a welcoming place for moms and babies. Lee Echols, vice president of marketing and communications at Northside Hospital, highlighted their commitment to healthy moms and babies and their partnership with the Braves.       STORY 5: 6 years   A former Cobb County Police officer, Robert New, has been sentenced to six years in prison and 14 years of probation after pleading guilty to aggravated assault and first-degree cruelty to children, according to the Cobb District Attorney's Office. New, 51, had 27 years of law enforcement experience and was employed as a Cobb officer at the time of the crime. The investigation began when a concerned individual discovered that the victim, who has cognitive disabilities, had been choked by New. Further investigation revealed that New had met the victim, who had a childhood traumatic brain injury, on a dating site. Prosecutors stated that New choked the woman to the point of her inability to breathe and also attempted to involve her underage niece in their sexual activities. The guilty plea was accepted by Superior Court Judge Kellie S. Hill, with Lindsay Raynor prosecuting the case on behalf of the State and Steve Cook representing New.       Story 6: NCC     In Game 3 of the Class AA state championship series at AdventHealth Stadium in Rome, Jackson Uggla, son of former Brave Dan Uggla, and a junior at North Cobb Christian, seized a golden opportunity. With the score tied 1-all in the bottom of the fourth inning, Uggla stepped up to the plate and delivered. Despite the friendly banter from his former teammates on Mount Paran Christian, Uggla silenced them with a double off the left-field wall, driving in two runs and giving North Cobb Christian a 3-1 lead. This ignited a flame inside him, and the team followed with an impressive eight-run fifth inning. Brock Parker's two-run single sealed the deal, invoking the mercy rule and leading to an 11-1 victory. It was North Cobb Christian's first state title as a GHSA program and a validation after falling short in last year's championship series.   Story 7:  Lowe   Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Josh Lowe, a Pope alum, has proven that his strong performance this season is more than just a hot start. With a batting average of .318, 11 home runs, 34 RBIs, and nine stolen bases, the 25-year-old is showing the potential to become a solid big leaguer. Rays manager Kevin Cash praises Lowe's consistent performance and ability to make adjustments. Lowe was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 13th pick in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. Lowe attended Pope High School in Marietta, He played third base and was a pitcher. He was identified as the last caretaker of the baby before symptoms of blunt force trauma appeared. When interviewed by police, Hernandez said he believed the infant was possessed by spirits and that he may have been too. The baby was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where her parents were unable to provide a reason for her skull fractures and internal bleeding. Hernandez was in jail for three days before making bond..       STORY 2: KSU Commencement ***Audio Sharp Dressed Man*** Kennesaw State University will hold eight commencement ceremonies from May 9-12 to recognize its almost 4,000 graduates this spring. The graduating class includes 664 first-generation college graduates and 60 military veterans, and the age range is from 19 to 81. The ceremonies will be held at the Convocation Center on the Kennesaw campus and will award undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. KSU alumna Georgia McGaughey, Vice President of Data and Computational Sciences at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, will speak during one of the ceremonies on May 9. The university will award degrees to students from various colleges, including the College of Science and Mathematics, College of Computing and Software Engineering, and Bagwell College of Education.           Top of Form           Story 3: Taste   The annual Taste of Marietta festival took place on Sunday, bringing an estimated 24,000 people to the Marietta Square in Georgia. More than 50 food vendors sold a range of treats from ice cream to cocktails, while music performances and activities were also on offer. Attendees shared their favorite festival items, with Chicago-style hotdogs and ice cream being popular choices. Created by the Marietta Visitors Bureau in 1993, the festival takes place on the last Sunday in April every year and has grown in size over the years.       Story 4:  Mt Paran ***Au*** ***Instrumental BED**   Mount Paran Christian School organized "Family Serve Day" where students and their families worked to serve their community. One of the events was hosted by local real estate owner Janice Overbeck who has been hosting the event with the school for several years. This year, families upcycled plastic bags into dog leashes for Cobb County Police. The leashes were picked up by Lt. Col. Michael L. Williams who showed his gratitude to the families that made them. The Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team is working towards limiting plastic usage and finding sustainable options for items typically made from petroleum-based plastics.                 STORY 5:Zoning   The Cobb Planning Commission in Marietta, Georgia, has delayed a decision on whether to authorize a proposed subdivision on Post Oak Tritt Road in east Cobb. The developer, Kenneth Clary, submitted a rezoning request for just over 13 acres in July and has reduced the number of proposed homes from 20 to 18. Opponents of the development have raised concerns that a historic log cabin and gravesite on the property could be disturbed. While the attorney representing Clary denies that there is a cemetery on the site, members of the Cobb Cemetery Preservation Commission insist that there is.       Top of Form       Commercial  Dayco Systems Commercial  ESOG Block Wall                     STORY 6: Pope   Pope beat Woodstock 5-2 in the third game of their second-round Class AAAAAA state playoff series. The 2022 Class AAAAAA state champion Greyhounds (27-9) scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings. John Steutzer stole home and ended with a key bases-clearing double. Woodstock (23-11), last year's Class AAAAAAA champion, cut the lead to one in their trip to the plate. Pope advanced to the state quarterfinals and will host Tift County, with the series scheduled to begin with a doubleheader Friday.     STORY 7 McKinnon ***BED***   The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed running back Jerick McKinnon, who combined for 10 touchdowns in the regular season last year, earning AFC Offensive Player of the Month honors for December. McKinnon, a Sprayberry alum, split backfield duties with rookie Isiah Pacheco. The terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed. The Chiefs' general manager, Brett Veach, expressed his excitement about the team's depth at the running-back spot, with Pacheco, McKinnon, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire returning while also adding undrafted free agent Deneric Prince.   Ingles intro. COBB COUNTY, Ga. (CBS46) - A metro Atlanta mother claims police in Cobb County detained her and her children after mistaking her for a thief.  Deondra Hawkins told CBS46 she and her children were traumatized by what happened to them last Friday at the RaceTrac on Windy Hill Road in Cobb County.  “I'm traumatized when I hear children crying when I see police driving,” she added. “It's just difficult to deal with.”  The family stopped at the gas station so Hawkins's two teens could use the bathroom and grab some snacks.
