Don and Tom take a reality sledgehammer to investors' wildly inflated expectations for stock market returns. A new survey shows average Americans expect 12.6% after inflation, even as historical real returns rarely crack 9%. They explore how this overconfidence—fueled by recency bias and company loyalty—leads to dangerous behavior like under-saving, over-spending, and poorly diversified portfolios. With real-world client stories, historical decade-by-decade returns, and a deep dive into how long it takes portfolios to recover after major drops, they reinforce the need for long-term discipline and diversified planning. The episode wraps with audience questions on umbrella policies, retirement bond ladders, and smart ETF tax-loss harvesting strategies. 0:04 Don delays the podcast waiting for Tom's arrival (with British accent) 1:30 Survey shock: Investors expect 12.6% real annual returns 2:28 Reality check: Actual global stock returns are closer to 9% 3:45 Dangerous real-world portfolios: 100% S&P 500 near retirement 5:30 One-stock portfolios tied to employers—what could go wrong? 6:50 Under-saving due to false optimism about future returns 7:14 Decade-by-decade historical real returns from 1930–2020s 10:13 The Dave Ramsey fantasy: 8% withdrawals on 12% returns 10:40 Recency bias: Why we forget recent downturns so fast 11:05 50% of years see 10% drops; 1 in 3 see 20% drops 12:47 Emotional investing vs. disciplined long-term planning 13:39 Listener Q: How long to recover from a major market drop? 14:22 Diversification shortens recovery time historically 15:36 Build for the worst case: 50% stock market drop 16:32 Listener Q: Does Ivan need an umbrella policy with $350K net worth? 17:57 Umbrellas are rarely needed—but the industry sure sells them 18:54 Listener Q: Is LifeX 10-year bond ladder a good retirement tool? 20:20 It's mostly return of principal—DIY Treasury ladders are cheaper 22:40 Don't be fooled by nice websites and big yield promises 23:24 Listener Q: Can AVGE replace four-fund ETF portfolio for tax loss harvesting? 24:32 Swap Avantis for DFA funds—nearly identical, wash-sale safe 25:56 Parting shots: Buy a decent mic, don't let emotion control your portfolio Learn more about your ad choices. Steve Gruber discusses news and headlines
Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. Last year, Solstice took ownership of The New Daily. This month it took control of Schwartz Media's 7am podcast. And this week Solstice took a majority stake in Australian Traveller Media. In truth, the expansion of Solstice - which now has 87 staff - has been more organic. Solstice started life as the publisher of South Australian newspaper The Independent Weekly, before taking on News Corp in Adelaide with InDaily.Solstice's national footprint grew when it was hired by some of Australia's industry super funds to launch the New Daily more than a decade ago, and recently bought the masthead from the funds. In the wide ranging conversation, Hamra discusses his shareholder base of impact investors, and tries to avoid answering how much he paid for Australian Traveller. He explains: “The reason why we liked Australian Traveller is because of the cultural fit, that we were like-minded in terms of our attitude towards publishing, our attitudes towards independence and quality.”The intention for the company's lifestyle publications is to help fund its journalism: “If you look over history, you'll see that in any media outlet, it's not the news that funds the business. It's actually other verticals that have funded the business.“Hamra is also refreshingly honest about the post-rationalisation many publishers go through when they build their businesses. “We end up growing a little bit like Topsy until we fall into a strategy. And that's kind of what's happened to us. We actually had an audience and we bolted things onto that audience over time. And then 15, 16 years down the track, you go, oh, hang on… all of a sudden we've got this fabulous audience and we've actually got a strategy.”Solstice had been a beneficiary of Facebook funding, and had to make redundancies when it dried up. Like all publishers, Hamra also has a view on the unavoidable need to do business with platforms like Google, and a more sceptical view on whether the government really wants to help Australia's media owners:“They sound desperate to help, but the reality is we know they're not because they would have done something by now. If they were as concerned about the media as they say they are, something would have happened by now.More from Mumbrella…* Clock ticking for loss-making Aspermont* Union boss slams News Corp's use of AI in newsrooms* On the road again: Compass event series dates announced* Opinion: Marketing measurement is having a moment, but can it deliver?* ‘Callous and punitive': Rosie Waterland launches own podcast network after battle with SCA* Dr Mumbo: Is Youtube social media? Robert Corp discusses his recently-filed lawsuit against the City of Buffalo after an investigative report reveals a decade of unfluorinated water
This podcast episode serves as a reflective commemoration of my ten-year journey with the Real Estate Sessions, emphasizing the importance of authentic storytelling in the real estate industry. I share insights garnered from over 400 episodes, highlighting how the narratives of individuals, rather than mere industry jargon, have enriched our discussions. This episode also revisits poignant moments from my personal life, particularly the influence of my dear friend John Bjorlie, who has faced terminal illness with extraordinary grace and resilience. His experiences have imparted invaluable lessons about empathy, connection, and the significance of savoring life's moments. As I transition into the next phase of this podcast, I express my intention to slow the pace of episodes while I embark on writing a memoir that captures the essence of friendship and the profound impact of shared experiences. In a poignant reflection on the past decade, Bill Risser, the host of the Real Estate Sessions podcast, shares his insights on the transformative power of storytelling within the real estate sector. With nearly 25 years of industry experience, Risser has dedicated the last ten years to uncovering the narratives that shape the lives of real estate professionals, emphasizing the importance of human connection over transactional dialogue. His journey began in 2015 with the aim of understanding podcasting, yet it evolved into a platform that celebrates the intricate tapestry of personal stories, highlighting the resilience and creativity that define the industry. Risser's commitment to authenticity is evident as he recounts how he has avoided superficial marketing tactics, instead opting for deep, meaningful questions that elicit the true essence of his guests' experiences.Throughout the episode, Risser revisits significant moments from the podcast's history, including memorable interviews that have left a lasting impact on both him and his audience. He reflects on the lessons learned from guests such as Joe Rand and Sean Carpenter, who have shared insights that extend beyond real estate, touching on themes of relationships and personal growth. Risser's emphasis on the human element serves as a reminder that the stories of triumphs, setbacks, and reinventions are what resonate most with listeners, offering them valuable lessons in empathy and connection that transcend the confines of the real estate industry. As the podcast enters its next phase, Risser announces a new direction that prioritizes depth over frequency, signaling a commitment to crafting a memoir that delves into his personal experiences with his friend John Bjorlie. This narrative will explore the profound lessons of joy, resilience, and the human spirit in the face of adversity, reinforcing the idea that the bonds we forge and the stories we share are what truly matter. Risser's reflections on his decade-long journey with the podcast underscore the significance of consistency, integrity, and the power of listening, reminding us all of the importance of walking alongside each other through life's challenges.Takeaways: The podcast celebrates ten years of storytelling in the real estate industry and beyond. Bill Risser emphasizes the importance of genuine narratives over industry jargon in his interviews. Listeners appreciate the podcast for its depth, connection, and emotional resonance rather than mere tactics. The 'Die Happy Tour' serves as a significant reflection on living fully and finding joy amid adversity. In transitioning to season 11, the podcast will shift to a slower pace to allow for deeper storytelling. Consistency, integrity, and the power of questions have emerged as vital lessons from a decade of podcasting.

This episode is another live show from the streets of Toronto during our 10th Anniversary Photo Walk & Brewery Tour. The tour took the gang from Sugar Beach and the Great Lake Brew Pub on Lower Jarvis, through Old Town Toronto and into the Distillery District for Old Flame Brewing Co., and then into Riverside for Eastbound Brewing. There were other breweries planned, but due to the weather, we stopped at Eastbound. Despite the weather (which was not pleasant), about twenty people attended the event, and everyone enjoyed the shorter but safer walk. Alex took the time to record short interviews with twelve attendees and asked them a series of questions. What Camera(s) do you have with you, what is your favourite subject matter, what is your favourite film stock and what in your mind makes for a good photo? You can view all of Alex's photos on Flickr.

Ray Long, former Chicago Tribune investigative reporter, joins Rick Kogan to talk about his retirement from the Tribune and what drew him to journalism in the first place. Ray discusses his early years in journalism and also comments on what he thinks will happen with the Mike Madigan case.
There is a buzz about longevity. Many people feel that we are on the brink of a lifespan revolution. There is talk of making living to 100 the new norm. But the reality is just the opposite. So, I thought I should. The truth:Life expectancy is actually declining. Since its peak in 2014, the average lifespan in the United State has declined about 0.5 years. This may not sound like much. But considering the trend has been consistent and represents the average of a population of over 300 million people, it's a hug deal. My big fear…..This is just the beginning and that this trend will continue. Why? Because even though we have more and better medical technology than ever, our environment is increasingly unhealthy. The world has become obesogenic, diabetogenic, and addicted. This is crippling our ability to live long and live well.Figure 1: Life Expectancy from Birth (2003 – 2023)Visit Longetrics.org/blog or fullscope.org/blog for the complete post!

On July 14, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft made its historic flyby of Pluto, transforming our understanding of this distant world. Ten years later, we’re celebrating that iconic moment and the mission that made it possible. We begin with Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, who reflects on the mission’s origins, its most surprising discoveries, and what comes next as New Horizons continues its journey through the Kuiper Belt. Then we check in with Adeene Denton, NASA postdoctoral program fellow at the Southwest Research Institute, who just returned from the “Progress in Understanding the Pluto System: 10 Years After Flyby” conference held at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Adeene shares highlights from the event, which brought together scientists to explore new results from New Horizons, JWST, Hubble, and ground-based observatories on Pluto, Charon, and the broader Kuiper Belt. Finally, Planetary Society Director of Government Relations Jack Kiraly joins us with a major update on the ongoing fight to protect NASA science from devastating budget cuts. And don’t miss What’s Up with our Chief Scientist, Bruce Betts. We’re talking Arrokoth, the most distant Kuiper Belt object New Horizons visited after Pluto. These bombardments transformed Earth's early atmosphere and delivered the complex organic molecules that allowed life to develop on our planet. While meteorites have provided the raw materials for life to thrive, they have radically devastated life as well, most famously killing off the dinosaurs and paving the way for humans to evolve to where we are today. As noted meteoriticist Greg Brennecka explains, meteorites did not just set us on the path to becoming human, they helped direct the development of human culture. Meteorites have influenced humanity since the start of civilization. Over the centuries, meteorite falls and other cosmic cinema have started (and stopped) wars, terrified millions, and inspired religions throughout the world.

Carl and Mike come back with more football talk and discuss why they believe the Falcons may be getting set to begin "their most important season in a decade' as they look to break a playoff drought of seven years. As they share their thoughts, they also agree the Falcons had a great offseason in regards to adding to their defense and while Michael Panix Jr. only had three starts last season, the offensive pieces around him in conjunction with a hopefully much improved defense, give reason to be excited about the season. They then get into the latest NFL headlines, including Bengals owner Mike Brown saying they have no intention of trading Trey Hendrickson and working to get a deal done with their best defensive player.

Slender Man Stabbing Accomplice Approved for Conditional Release from Mental Hospital After More Than a Decade A Wisconsin woman who nearly killed a classmate at age 12 in an infamous attack inspired by the fictional character Slender Man will be conditionally released from a psychiatric hospital more than a decade later, a judge ruled Thursday. Morgan Geyser, now 22, has been confined to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute since she was found not criminally responsible for the 2014 stabbing of her friend, Payton Leutner, in Waukesha, Wisconsin. On Thursday, Waukesha County Circuit Judge Scott Wagner signed off on a new conditional release plan developed by the Department of Health Services. The plan comes after an earlier version was rejected in April over concerns raised by Leutner's family, including that Geyser's proposed group home was located just eight miles from Leutner's residence. The exact details and timing of Geyser's release have not been made public for safety and privacy reasons. Her attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment. On May 31, 2014, Geyser and her friend Anissa Weier, both 12 at the time, lured Leutner into the woods at David's Park following a sleepover. There, Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times with a kitchen knife while Weier encouraged her. One of the stab wounds narrowly missed Leutner's heart. Severely injured, Leutner managed to crawl to a nearby bike path where a passerby found her and called for help. She miraculously survived the attack after emergency surgery and weeks of recovery. The motive, according to investigators, was chilling: Geyser and Weier believed that murdering Leutner would please Slender Man, a fictional internet character, and prove themselves worthy to become his “proxies.” They feared that if they didn't comply, Slender Man would harm their families. After the stabbing, the two girls began walking toward northern Wisconsin, claiming they were trying to find Slender Man's mansion, which they believed was in the Nicolet National Forest. They were arrested hours later on Interstate 94 in nearby Waukesha County. In 2017, Geyser pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide as a party to a crime but was found not criminally responsible due to mental illness. In 2018, she was committed to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute for up to 40 years. Weier also pleaded guilty in 2017 to attempted second-degree intentional homicide with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 25 years in a mental health facility. She was conditionally released in 2021, agreeing to live with her father and wear a GPS monitor. Prosecutors and state health officials initially opposed Geyser's release. In March 2024, they cited concerning behavior, including her reading a novel involving murder and organ trafficking and communicating with a man known to collect “murderabilia.” Geyser reportedly sent him a graphic sketch and a suggestive postcard. However, her defense attorney countered that her reading materials were approved by staff and that her communication with the man had ceased after she learned he was selling items she had sent. The presiding judge at the time, Judge Michael Bohren, concluded she wasn't concealing anything and allowed the release planning to proceed. Judge Wagner assumed the case after Bohren retired in April. Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
