Health Secretary RFK Jr. has gutted the CDC's vaccine advisory committee, replacing its members with a mix of anti-vaxxers, COVID contrarians, and medical non-professionals. What do these sweeping changes to our vaccine infrastructure—and the rise of the ironically named MAHA movement, short for Make America Healthy Again—mean for the health and well-being of everyday Americans? Dan sits down with epidemiologist and data scientist Katelyn Jetelina to unpack the implications of Kennedy's policies on flu season, COVID, and a broad range of preventable diseases. Katelyn also explains how the politicization of seed oils, food dyes, and fluoride distracts from the public health issues that actually matter—and shares what she learned from grassroots MAHA organizers about their uneasy alliance with MAGA.For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy's revamped CDC vaccine advisory board stopped recommending certain flu vaccines this week. On this week's On the Media, a scientist debunks the claims that RFK, Jr.'s appointees are making. Plus, how the media covered the U.S. bombing of Iran.[00:00] Host Micah Loewinger unspools the Trump administration's attempts to control the narrative around the war in Iran, including the president's insistence on the “total obliteration” of Iran's nuclear sites, conflicting reports over whether or not Iran had a nuclear weapons program in the works, and how the media is missing the mark.[00:00] Host Brooke Gladstone speaks with Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center and a physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, about how the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., purged the CDC's vaccine advisory committee members, the controversial figures Kennedy replaced them with, and what impact this will have on the future of vaccines and immunology in the US. [00:00] Brooke continues her conversation with Paul Offit about the new controversial figures appointed to the CDC's vaccine advisory committee, and how science communication could improve in the next public health crisis. This episode was recorded in Reno, Nevada, during the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference. The panel discusses their individual experiences with outbreaks in different states. Beth talks about her group's microbial surveillance technology they used to compare rectal swabs from positive and non-positive herds. They noted elevations in specific virulent E. coli, Salmonella spp., and Clostridium perfringens in the HPAI-positive herds. Enrique noted that in California, the outbreak began in the South Valley during periods of heat stress, which exacerbated symptoms. He also felt that some dairies panicked a little and moved cows too much, which did not help. In the North Valley, the outbreak happened in cooler weather, and dairies purposefully did not move cows out of their pens and provided supportive therapy within the pen. (5:25)Dr. Schcolnik emphasized making sure i's are dotted and t's are crossed in your nutrition program to help manage through an outbreak. The immune system is an obligate glucose utilizer, so energy is key, as are protein and trace minerals. He noted they also added binders to diets, and either probiotics or double doses of yeast to keep the rumen healthy. Decreasing intake is a big symptom, so he recommends vitamin B supplementation to stimulate appetite. (12:30)The panel discusses how the Texas and California outbreaks differed from one another, including heat stress, recovery in milk production after infection, bird migration and cattle movement. Enrique notes that in California, it seemed like transmission was going downwind. Animal movement, wild birds and milk trucks were also implicated. (14:31)Several companies are investing in vaccine development, but the virus mutation is a challenge. Dr. Spencer wonders if the vaccine will end up resembling the human flu vaccine where you hope to target the general structure of the virus to reduce impact. The panel talks about natural immunity and how cows will be impacted in the lactation after they were ill. Dr. Schcolnik has observed that a percentage of cows who were dry during the outbreak aren't performing as well after freshening. He hypothesizes this could be due to mammary cell death during infection, as the virus lyses the cell as it exits the cell. (24:41)The panel discusses practical recommendations for dairy producers to prepare for or help mitigate during an outbreak. Biosecurity is key. Vaccines are hopefully on the way, but until then, minimizing cattle movements within the herd, post-dipping cows as soon as possible after the machine falls off and minimizing splashing of milk are all good practices. The panel looks forward to more research about all the different ways the virus transmits. They're also eager to learn more about treatment plans and what has worked for different dairies regarding giving fluids, altering rations, boosting the immune system, managing co-infections and impacts on calves and heifers. (29:18)Lastly, panelists share their take-home thoughts. (37:33)Scott invites the audience to Bourbon and Brainiacs at ADSA in Louisville - a bourbon tasting with all your favorite professors! Will either paper do the hack All-Chicago team before this weekend's series and would any White Sock actually be on it? Wouldn't it be great if George McCasey started dating a 24 year old beauty pageant sixth runner up? And did we know that George went to college at a party school? Are we really supposed to be surprised that Caleb and his dad weren't all that thrilled about being drafted by the Bears with the Flus at the helm? And don't get too excited about the McCaskey's selling some shares in the team to pay their inheritance tax. All that, and more.

The May 12, 2025, EO from the President is supposed to lower prescription drug prices, some say up to 80%. The EO, however, which is not a law, magical wand, or price control, simply directs the Security of HHS, RFK Jr., to negotiate better prices. The May 5, 2025, White House directive titled "Reduce Regulatory Barriers to Domestic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing," tells more of the story. The goal is to reduce costs and make more drugs in the US. Section four of the May 12 order states: "To the extent consistent with law, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (Secretary) shall facilitate direct-to-consumer purchasing programs for pharmaceutical manufacturers that sell their products to American patients at the most-favored-nation price." In other words, more factories, more drugs, less regulations, and direct manufacture to consumer deals. This EO does NOT MAGA or MAHA, it greatly increases the manufacture, distribution, and usage of substances that do that opposite. As does the introduction of funding for universal covid-vaccines.A few key details are left out of the political assumptions and pandering: 1. why do Americans need these drugs to begin with? As the sickest developed nation in the world, that spends the most money on healthcare, it should be obvious the pharmaceutical industry is not helping us - in fact, the opposite seems to be true. 2. even with lower negotiated prices the overall cost can still be exceedingly higher than the price tag of development, marketing, and the earning of honest profit. 3. if, as the order says, America is the "largest purchaser of pharmaceuticals," and "Americans should get the best deal," then we are missing the point; the largest purchaser would indicate higher demand which would mean higher prices; getting the best deal doesn't mean becoming healthier - it means continuing to pay money for things that don't contribute to our health.-*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. In this episode, Bob ‘n Joyce explore what it really takes to create a workplace where people thrive — and it's a lot more than free snacks and ping pong tables. They dive into the idea of on-site wellness centers, where employees can unplug, recharge, and access real support. Imagine a workplace that offers: ✅ Manicures and massage therapy ✅ On-site counseling for burnout or stress ✅ Flu and COVID shots without leaving the office ✅ Yoga, dance, and meditation sessions Bob ‘n Joyce make the case that this isn't a far-out fantasy. Companies like SAS Institute in Cary, NC, have been doing it for over 40 years — and it's a big reason they consistently rank among the best places to work in America. Tune in for fresh ideas on how your company can move beyond surface perks and start building a true culture of care. Come on in, grab a snack, and welcome!
In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Anice Lowen discuss the bird flu outbreak, highlighting the virus's spread from birds to dairy cattle and recorded cases of human infection. Dr. Lowen explains the differences between influenza A and influenza B viruses, talks about which type causes pandemics, and what we can do to try to prevent future pandemics from these flu strains. Key Takeaways: An epidemic affects a specific region, a pandemic is global. Only Influenza A viruses can cause pandemics and are often transmitted via birds and mammals. Humans can become infected with viruses from animals only if we are exposed to those animals. Flu epidemics happen every winter due to the circulation of influenza A and B viruses. Pandemics happen sporadically, the last four were well documented in 1918, 1957, 1968, and 2009. Bird flu can become serious if human to another. So monitoring is critical. "Viruses circulating in these domestic animals actually present the greatest pandemic risk simply because humans are exposed to those animals more than they are to wild animals." — Dr. Anice Lowen Connect with Dr. Anice Lowen: Professional Bio: biomed.emory.edu/PROGRAM_SITES/MMG/about-us/faculty-detail/anice-lowen-phd Website: https://www.lowenlab.com/ Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Flu season is almost over, but if you hurry, there's just enough to catch the seasonal bug if you want. You have until the end of May, in case you're interested. There's really a lot to be said for being sick. It forces you to slow down. It teaches you how to be sympathetic towards others when you're well. It jump starts your body's immune system, which needs a good workout every once in a while. Of course, there are a lot of downsides as well. There are the obvious physical aches and pains, but there is also a more hidden (and sometimes sinister) impact that long-term illness can wreak on a family. Join us this week on A Time to Sharpen, as we discuss the ups and downs of being sick. How we care for the boys at the ranch when they come down with something. How we counsel families who are fighting chronic and sometimes deadly diseases. And how, sometimes, God speaks through suffering, or what C.S. Lewis called, “the megaphone of pain

It's been an unusually tough winter virus season. Rates of flu-like infections are higher than they've been in nearly 30 years. And for the first winter since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, flu deaths have surpassed COVID deaths. Add to that a higher-than-average year for norovirus, a nasty type of stomach bug. Then there's the emerging threat of avian flu. While there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus, about 70 people in the US have contracted the virus from livestock since April 2024.To make sense of the latest viral trends, Host Flora Lichtman talks with Dr. Katelyn Jetelina, epidemiologist and author of the newsletter “Your Local Epidemiologist”; and Dr. Erica Shenoy, chief of infection control at Mass General Brigham hospital.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
