Unpacking Trump's Tariff Policy: Making Sense of Economic NonsenseMatt Robison and conservative economist Jessica Reidl draw parallels between Donald Trump's administration and the fictional Lumon Industries from the TV show 'Severance'. They delve into the seemingly chaotic and inscrutable nature of Trump's economic policies, particularly his tariff strategy. Jessica provides expert insights into the economic ramifications of these tariffs, debunks the justifications given for them, and examines whether they are part of a broader, more dysfunctional pattern in Trump's administration. The discussion highlights the economic contradictions and long-term risks posed by Trump's policies and questions the overall stability and future of the U.S. economy.00:00 Introduction: Comparing Trump to Severance03:59 Analyzing Trump's Tariff Policies08:10 The Contradictions in Tariff Justifications15:13 The Manufacturing Argument23:20 The China Tariff Situation30:17 The Bond Market's Reaction36:40 Long-term Economic Consequences45:11 Concluding Thoughts and Future Work

House AI task force members on Tuesday touted the long-awaited release of their report outlining recommendations to Congress on the federal government's adoption of AI, while confirming that lawmakers are in conversation with the incoming administration about the very same topics. The nearly 300-page report digs into a plethora of areas that the emerging technology touches, including the government's own use of AI, along with recommendations concerning AI governance and the AI workforce. Rep. Jay Obernolte, R-Calif., co-chairman of the task force, said during a press conference Tuesday that legislators and the incoming Trump administration are discussing what could be done to the executive order that the Biden White House released last fall, what items need legislative action and how efforts might be “harmonized” between the legislative and executive branches. Adele Merritt has been named the top IT official for the National Institutes of Health, giving the agency a permanent chief information officer for the first time in roughly two years. Merritt, who was most recently the CIO of the intelligence community, began her roles as CIO and director of the agency's Office of the Chief Information Officer on Monday, NIH Director Monica M. Welcome to episode #957 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Brigid Schulte is an award-winning journalist and bestselling author who has spent her career delving into the intricacies of modern life, particularly the challenges of balancing work, love, and play. With nearly 17 years at The Washington Post, where she was part of a team that won The Pulitzer Prize, Brigid has written for a myriad of publications including The Atlantic, The Guardian, Time, and Slate. Her work often focuses on the unsustainable pace of our always-on culture and the societal narratives that shape our perceptions of success and fulfillment. In this conversation, Brigid discusses her latest book, Over Work - Transforming The Daily Grind In The Quest For A Better Life (her first book was, Overwhelmed - Work, Love, And Play When No One Has Time). She explores how, despite advancements meant to make life easier, many of us feel more pressed for time than ever. The pandemic, she notes, has been a catalyst in reshaping our understanding of work and its true value. It has highlighted stark disparities between knowledge workers who can work remotely and low-wage workers who often face systemic barriers to advancement. Brigid challenges the long-held belief that longer hours equate to better work, emphasizing that this narrative is flawed and detrimental. Workers today are increasingly seeking meaningful and dignified work, and leadership plays a crucial role in shaping a culture that supports this. We delve into how technology, while disruptive, also has the potential to create new job opportunities - but only if we rethink how we value different types of work. If you're interested in understanding the complexities of modern work culture and exploring actionable ways to create a more balanced and fulfilling life, Brigid's insights are both enlightening and timely. This week on rabble radio, we feature a segment from our most recent Off the Hill political panel. This month, our theme was ‘Off the Hill: The myths and realities of Canada's labour shortage'  Our panel featured MP Matthew Green, economist Jim Stanford, president of the Ontario Federation of Labour Laura Walton and researcher and policy analyst at the CCPA, Véronique Sioufi.  About our guests MP Matthew Green was first elected Member of Parliament for Hamilton Centre in 2019 and re-elected in 2021. Previously, he served for the 2014-2018 term as the Ward 3 Councillor, and first person of colour to be elected to Hamilton City Council. Green is NDP Critic for  Employment and Workforce Development; Labour; Ethics; and Deputy Critic for Public Services and Procurement.  Laura Walton is the President of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), Canada's largest provincial labour federation. The OFL represents 54 unions and one million workers in Ontario. Laura previously served as the President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees' Ontario School Board Council of Unions (OSBCU), which represents over 55,000 education workers across the province. In 2022, Laura led an historic strike that won unprecedented gains for OSCBU members and that led to the defeat of Bill 28, the provincial government's landmark anti-labour legislation. Jim Stanford is an economist and the director of the Centre for Future Work, a labour economics research institute with operations in Canada and Australia. Véronique Sioufi is the racial and socio-economic equity researcher and policy analyst at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives BC.  Check out the entire panel on rabbleTV or rabble's YouTube channel!  If you like the show please consider subscribing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your podcasts.
