Next stop - the moon! Jeremy Hansen stops by our studio to chat about how he's prepping to be the first Canadian to go to the moon.Plus:Santa's reindeer may be losing their antlers –– and climate change could be the culpritReindeer are the only animal in the deer family where the females also grow antlers, and they typically have a full rack over the wintertime and drop them in June when they give birth. University of Guelph PhD student Allegra Love was monitoring reindeer on Fogo Island in Newfoundland, when she made a surprising discovery that female reindeer are losing and growing their antlers much earlier than usual. This can put more stress on the animal during a crucial part of their pregnancy, and the researchers think this could eventually lead to the reindeer losing their antlers altogether. The work was published in the journal Ecosphere.Pterosaur brains reveal clues about why these mighty fliers took to the skiesFlight has only evolved among vertebrates three times — in bats, birds, and first in pterosaurs. How pterosaurs first took to the skies was always a mystery to scientists, until the discovery of a fossilized 230-million year old pterosaur relative in Brazil. An international team, including Ohio University professor Lawrence Witmer, used an MRI for detailed analysis of the fossilized skull, to pinpoint the miniscule brain changes that happened as the animal developed the capacity to fly. The research was published in the journal Current Biology.Scientists are using AI to find life in 3 billion year old rocksEarth's earliest signs of life are often incredibly difficult to detect. An international team of researchers have developed a new tool that uses AI to find “whispers” of life locked inside ancient rocks. Using this tool, the researchers, including astrobiologist Michael Wong from Carnegie Science, were able to detect fresh chemical evidence of life in rocks that are 3.3 billion years old. This tool can not only be used to explore the origins of life here on Earth, but also on Mars and other planetary bodies. The work was published in the journal PNAS.

From December 3, 2025. The world we live on today has undergone dramatic change since it first formed, and time hasn't necessarily been kind. Earth has gained some weight (and a Moon) after a chance collision. A leaky gut led to some confusing internal structures. Here on the surface, mountains keep finding new ways to pop off and destroy surroundings. But scientists are helping us understand all these factors. Learn how in this episode of EVSN, and also hear about our latest tales from the launch pad. In this episode, Scott Becker discusses SpaceX’s potential trillion and a half dollar IPO and why its massive valuation is capturing market attention.
Today's episode of STEM-Talk features a timely and wide-ranging discussion with Drs. Michael Griffin and Lisa Porter about NASA's plans to return humans to the Moon, the history of lunar missions, and how China's advances in space technology pose a serious threat to U.S. national security. IHMC founder and CEO Emeritus Ken Ford's interview with Griffin and Porter came 10 days before Griffin appeared before the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space and Technology to give testimony on China's advancements in space and the risks it poses for the United States. “We have squandered a 60-year head start on pioneering the space frontier to a nation that, without reason or provocation on our part, has chosen to become our nation's adversary,” said Griffin in his opening comments to Congress. In this episode, Griffin and Porter explain why it is critical for the U.S. to return to the Moon before China. They also argue that NASA's Artemis III mission to return to the lunar surface and establish a permanent base on the Moon is seriously flawed and should be scrapped. Griffin and Porter are co-founders and co-presidents of LogiQ Inc., a company providing high-end management, scientific and technical consulting services. Griffin's background includes roles as the former Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the Administrator of NASA, the Space Department Head at the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as well as Chairman and CEO of Schafer Corporation. Porter's background includes roles as the former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the founding Director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Associate Administrator for Aeronautics at NASA. Show notes: [00:04:44] Ken opens the interview by welcoming Mike back to STEM-Talk, who was a guest on Episodes 23 and 134. He also welcomes Lisa to her first appearance on STEM-Talk and asks her to talk about her decision to major in nuclear engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. [00:08:50] Ken asks Lisa why she went to Stanford for a Ph.D. in physics. [00:10:43] Ken explains that Lisa was the founding director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), a department within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Ken asks about some of the challenges the American intelligence community faced that she addressed as director of IARPA. [00:16:15] Ken asks about Lisa's time working for Mike as Associate Administrator for Aeronautics at NASA, and how she came to accept that role. [00:18:07] Ken explains that when Mike became Undersecretary for Defense for Research and Engineering in 2018, he invited Lisa to become the Deputy Undersecretary for Defense for Research and Engineering. Ken asks Mike why Lisa was ideal for that role. [00:21:07] Ken explains that Mike and Lisa are working together again as co-founders and co-presidents of LogiQ Inc., a company that provides scientific consulting services. Ken asks Mike to give a brief overview of LogiQ's work. [00:24:44] Ken shifts the discussion to space exploration, noting that he wants to talk about Mike's 2024 congressional testimony on returning to the Moon, and a paper that he and Lisa published titled “A system architecture for human lunar return.” To begin the discussion, Ken asks why it is so important for us to return to the Moon. [00:29:11] Ken asks Mike and Lisa to explain why it is important for the US to be the first to return to the Moon in the context of China's ambition to send humans to the Moon and establish a permanent lunar presence. [00:33:24] Ken asks Mike and Lisa if they see the cancellation of the Apollo program as a mistake. [00:35:36] Ken asks Mike and Lisa to give an overview of the Artemis program. [00:41:45] Ken mentions the centrality of the Gateway in the Artemis plan, and the problem with making something that is already hard even harder for no good reason. [00:43:28] Ken mentions his concern that the focus on a Mars-forward approach might impede our success with the current Moon missions. [00:46:40] In Mike and Lisa's aforementioned paper, they propose a dual-launch lunar landing architecture, which is simpler than the current NASA architecture and presents lower risks to the crew. Ken asks Mike and Lisa to elaborate on this idea. [00:48:41] Ken asks Mike and Lisa what they think are some of the other technical and programmatic problems with the current Artemis plan. [00:52:31] Ken asks Mike and Lisa what NASA's response has been, as well as the response of others in the human space flight community, to their paper and recommendations for the Artemis mission architecture. [00:54:25] Ken explains that Sean Duffy, the Secretary of Transportation and acting NASA administrator, has opened the door to some additional lander ideas in light of concerns that the two current contractors, Space X and Blue Origin, may not be ready in time for the current Artemis schedule. Ken asks if Lisa and Mike think this is a good idea or if they think it would further complicate matters. [00:59:25] NASA's current budget is around $24.9 billion dollars, approximately 0.4 percent of total federal spending. Ken notes at a time when China is increasing their investment in their space programs and launching several missions, NASA is facing a proposal to cut its funding by 24 percent to $18.8 billion. Ken asks Mike and Lisa for their thoughts on this. [01:03:13] Ken and Lisa continue Mike's discussion on the core purpose of NASA beyond science. [01:08:55] Ken and Mike reflect on Ken's observation that the U.S. is not as serious about space and the Moon as it was during the Apollo years, years that attracted the nation's best and brightest. [01:09:39] Ken asks Mike and Lisa their thoughts on the way that NASA is contracting more services in the development of Artemis, rather than funding a development program. [01:15:55] Ken wraps up the interview by commenting that he believes listeners will very much enjoy today's conversation. In this episode, we're back with the fabulous Dr. Rachel Phillips, also known as Geo Girl on YouTube, diving into part two of our intriguing Q&A session. This time, we cover listener questions about early Earth geology, the moon-forming impact, geochemistry, and much more. Spoiler alert: we journey into the cosmic and tectonic weeds, so grab your scientific hats as we ponder if the moon-forming whammy kickstarted plate tectonics and its broader implications on our planet! The center of our discussion revolves around a burning question: Did the moon-forming impact trigger plate tectonics? From vigorous debates on early Earth's behavior to the staggering differences between Earth and its 'toxic twin' Venus, we leave no stone unturned—or unmelted. Dr. Phillips and Jesse examine the evidence, debunk some age-old myths (bye-bye, late heavy bombardment), and think about how a cataclysmic impact billions of years ago might have reset our planetary clock. Oh, and don't get us started on whether Earth or moon rocks are older—trust us, it's complicated. As we approach the end of our cosmic conversation, we speculate about how such colossal impacts might have played a role in developing early life on Earth. Did these monumental collisions cook up the perfect conditions for life's early proliferation, or did they serve as the ultimate reset button? Join us on this epic journey through time, magma oceans, and cratered landscapes. And hey, if you have more burning questions or just want to say hello, hit us up on all the social medias at Planet Geo Cast or visit our website planetgeocast.com. In this episode we're diving into something I think everyone listening has experienced — the real-life Agents of The Matrix. You know exactly what I'm talking about…The moment you question an “official story,” something in people shifts. Their eyes glaze over. Their tone changes. They start defending the narrative like their survival depends on it.It's the same behavior we see in The Matrix when an Agent hijacks the body of someone still plugged into the system. And nothing activates these real-world Agents faster than questioning space — especially the moon landing. My Website: The Unplugged HumanLunar Lander PhotoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unpluggedhuman.life/Watch this episode on YoutubeGet a copy of The Unplugged JournalPodcast gear, Quotes from Mother, Pine pollen and tallow - Online StoreSignup for newsletter: Send email to: ayahumero@deeperyougo.com with subject line "I Want In"Feel free to reach out with questions: ayahumero@deeperyougo.comField Guide 9 (a group I conduct ceremonies for) - WebsiteBook: The Self-Sabotage Guide: 9 Behaviors Preventing You from Becoming Stronger, Faster, And Sexier

Chat with Carol Connare, Editor The Old Farmers Almanac In this episode, Greg talks with Carol Connare, Editor-in-Chief of The Old Farmer's Almanac, the oldest continually published periodical in North America. Carol shares her path from archival work at UMass Amherst back to her “dream job,” stewarding the 234-year-old institution. She clarifies the recent confusion between The Farmer's Almanac (which closed) and The Old Farmer's Almanac (which is thriving), explains the Almanac's origins, traditions, and editorial approach, and offers insight into how it continues to adapt to modern growers' needs. The conversation touches on climate shifts, regional variability, moon-based planting, and the Almanac's evolution from a simple calendar of the heavens to a robust gardening and seasonal guide.Key Topics & EntitiesThe Old Farmer's Almanac (founded 1792)Carol Connare, 14th editor & lifelong gardenerRobert B. The Old Farmer's Almanac, founded in 1792, is alive, healthy, and independent. Historically, multiple almanacs existed, often overlapping in name and content. Confusion persists because both shared similar naming and themes, but only The Old Farmer's Almanac continues publication. How did Carol become Editor-in-Chief of such a historic publication?Carol “boomeranged” back to the organization after 20 years at UMass Amherst. Her archival and publications work there prepared her well, since the Almanac is essentially an evolving 234-year archive. As a lifelong gardener, she considers the role her dream job. What does an almanac actually do today? At its core, the Almanac remains a “calendar of the heavens”—tracking moon phases, sunrise/sunset, tides, and seasonal shifts. It layers this with planting guidance, long-range weather forecasts, reference tables, quirky curiosities, and everyday inspiration delivered “with a pleasing degree of humor,” following the founder's charge. How does the Almanac support readers in different climates like Arizona vs. North Carolina?Weather forecasts and planting tables are region-specific across 18 U.S. zones. Frost dates, planting windows, and climate references are calibrated for local conditions, and updated continually—especially after recent hardiness zone shifts and warming trends. Is the Almanac adapting to climate change?Yes. Carol explains that warming patterns have required updated planting and frost guidance nationwide. The Almanac recalibrated its data after the 2022 hardiness zone update and continues to adjust based on reader feedback and on-the-ground observations. How does long-range weather forecasting work, and why is it famous?Though not fully explained in this segment, Carol highlights that long-range forecasting is a tradition dating back to the Almanac's founding and remains one of its most used...
The Moon and the heart of the lion just miss each other tonight – at least as seen from the United States. As they climb into good view, after midnight, the Moon and the star Regulus will be separated by just a skosh. The farther north and east your location, the closer together they’ll appear. From some spots, they’ll be almost touching. And from much of Canada across to northern Norway they will touch – the Moon will occult the star. It’ll pass directly in front of Regulus, blocking it from view. The Moon can occult Regulus because the star lies almost atop the ecliptic – the Sun’s path across the sky. The Moon stays close to the ecliptic as well, but it does move a few degrees to either side. As a result, occultations of Regulus come in groups. This one is part of a cycle of that began earlier this year and will continue through the end of next year. Each occultation is visible from a different part of Earth. In part, that’s because each one lasts only a few minutes to a few hours, so the Moon and Regulus are below the horizon as seen from much of the world. Also, the Moon is so close to us that there’s a big difference in the viewing angle across the globe – up to two degrees – four times the width of the Moon itself. From any specific location, sometimes the angle is just right, but more often it’s a little off – providing a beautiful close encounter between the Moon and the heart of the lion. Script by Damond Benningfield
“What good is an idol carved by man, or a cast image that deceives you? How foolish to trust in your own creation - a god that can't even talk! What sorrow awaits you who say to wooden idols, ‘Wake up and save us!' To speechless stone images you say, ‘Rise up and teach us!' Can an idol tell you what to do? They may be overlaid with gold and silver, but they are lifeless inside. But the Lord is in his holy Temple. Let all the earth be silent before him.” - Habakkuk 2:18-20The book of Habakkuk is quite unlike any others in the canon of the prophets. Instead of the book being a message that God has given a prophet to share with a nation, Habakkuk is a conversation between Habakkuk and God. The book is structured: “Habakkuk's first complaint”, “The Lord's Reply.” “Habakkuk's second complaint”, “The Lord's Second Reply”, “Habakkuk's Prayer.” The themes in this book are not unlike the themes from other prophet books, but the way in which they are explored is very different and what this book teaches us about how we can approach God and the vantage point God has provides a deep and rich look into the character of God. To help us navigate the book of Habakkuk is Dr. Ken Turner, Professor of Biblical Studies at Toccoa Falls College and author of an in-progress commentary on Habakkuk for Zondervan. James brings back astrophysicist Brian Keating for a practical takedown of moon-landing conspiracy claims—and a wider lesson in how to reason when everyone has a microphone. Episode 324 | The Virgo Last Quarter Moon and Netflix Roulette! This week, Mercury makes a lot of moves, entering Sagittarius, aspecting Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, and presiding over the Virgo Last Quarter Moon. Neptune stations direct in Pisces. Mars relaxes with Neptune for a few hours, but then moves into industrious Capricorn. And once again this week, we have so many transits to cover that there just wasn't time to include a listener question. Plus: Fuzzy-headedness, delegation, and Netflix roulette! Read a full transcript of this episode. Have a question you'd like answered on the show? Email April or leave it here! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Love the show? Make a donation! Timestamps [1:40] Mars squares Saturn (Dec. 8, 4:15 pm PST) at 25º15' Sagittarius-Pisces – a classic “one foot on the gas, one foot on the brake” transit. Slow down long enough to be sure you're going after what's truly right. [3:42] Neptune stations direct (Dec. 10, 4:23 am PST) at 29°22' Pisces, after being retrograde since July 4. During this station, there could be a general lack of clarity. Be careful with Neptune things like medications or any kind of mind- or mood-altering substances. [6:19] Mercury opposes Uranus (Dec. 10, 11:59 am PST) at 28°39' Scorpio-Taurus. Due to Mercury's recent retrograde period, this is the third and final time that this transit is exact (previously on Oct. 29 and Nov. 19). Inspiration is high and words can have a tremendous impact. [7:50] Mercury trines Neptune (Dec. 11, 2:19 am PST) at 29°22' Scorpio-Pisces, the last of three transits in this series (previously on oct. 29 and Nov. 9). It's not the very best transit for sharp analysis and logic, but intuition should be heightened, breakthroughs are possible, and the urge to create will likely be very strong. [9:39] Moon Report! Virgo Last Quarter Moon (Dec. 11, 12:52 pm PST) at 20°04' Virgo-Sagittarius. Virgo is the sign of helpers and making peace with the limitations of your financial budget, your energy, and your schedule. [11:27] Lunar Phase Family Cycle (LPFC). This is the Last Quarter (final action point) in an LPFC that began with a New Moon on Sep 14, 2023 (21º58' Virgo). The First Quarter (action point) of this LPFC was on June 13, 2024 (23º39' Virgo), and the Full Moon (awareness point) was on March 13, 2025 (23º56' Virgo). [13:25] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. The Moon in Leo squares Uranus in Taurus (Dec. 9, 8:56 pm PST). It's VOC for 2 hours, 24 minutes, then enters Virgo (11:20 pm PST). Play Netflix roulette! Use this VOC Moon period to initiate a new habit of exposing yourself to new forms of art. [15:03] The Moon in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces (Dec. 12, 6:51 am PST). It's VOC for 1 hour 13 minutes, then enters Libra (8:04 am PST). Be inspired by others but not unrealistically infatuated. [15:53] The Moon in Libra sextiles Mars in Sagittarius (Dec. 14, 7:36 pm PST). It's VOC for 15 minutes, then enters Scorpio (7:51 pm PST). Use this VOC Moon period to get in the habit of going after what you want with a light-hearted attitude. [16:46] Mercury enters Sagittarius (Dec. 11, 2:40 pm PST), the sign of its detriment in Sagittarius. A good transit for taking a broad overview or doing long-term thinking, questioning beliefs, initiating higher education. Mercury will be in Sagittarius until January 1, 2026. [17:55] Mercury sextiles Pluto (Dec. 13, 8:32 am PST) at 02°12' Sagittarius- Aquarius. Mercury is on the Sabian symbol 3 Sagittarius, Two men playing chess, and Pluto is on 3 Aquarius, A deserter from the navy. This is the exact aspect in a series (previously on Oct. 30 and Nov. 17). Here is an opportunity to go after something that requires great perseverance and keen perception. [20:30] Mars squares Neptune (Dec. 14, 3:44 am PST) at 29°22' Sagittarius-Pisces. Mars is on the Sabian symbol 30 Sagittarius, The Pope. Neptune is on Sabian symbol 30 Pisces, The Great Stone Face, the rock formation like a face that's idealized by a boy who grows up and begins to look like it. This is an opportunity to review what our ideals are and how we can represent them most positively. Dedicate energy to pursuits that give back to your profession or to your community. [22:59] Mars enters Capricorn (Dec. 14, 11:34 pm PST). Mars will be on the Sabian symbol 1 Capricorn, An Indian chief demanding recognition. Mars is exalted in the sign of Capricorn, so it's a strong time to manage practical matters with maximum efficiency, professionalism, and drive. Mars will be in Capricorn until January 23, 2026. [25:05] Unfortunately, it's another week when the skies are too busy for a listener question. But please keep sending in your questions! [25:35] To have a question answered on a future episode, leave a message of one minute or less at speakpipe.com/bigskyastrologypodcast or email april (at) bigskyastrology (dot) com; put “Podcast Question” in the subject line. The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org From September 2025. Today's 2 topics: - The lunar roving, battery powered, 4 wheel drive "Moon Buggy" allowed astronauts on Apollo 15, 16, and 17 to travel 8 mph on the lunar surface with a maximum range of approximately 4.7 mi. Some of the rocks that these space travelers brought back, from the tiny area they were able to visit on the Moon, contained volcanic glass beads with trace amounts of trapped water inside of them. - When the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa visited the near Earth asteroid Itokawa in 2005 it found this 2000 foot by 800 foot elliptical world to have a variety of surface features. Instead of being a solid object like some asteroids, Itokawa is a rubble pile of boulders and pebbles held together by its tiny gravity. The total volume of pebbles seems to be comparable to the volume of large rocks and boulders which make up Itokawa , however, the depths of the pebbles or their concentration in the center remains unknown. Given this uncertainty, this asteroid appears to be made up of a million times more small particles than larger ones. The Moon is a “dead” world. It trembles with a few small moonquakes, and there may be occasional “burps” of gas. But for the most part, not much happens inside it. That’s definitely not the case for one of the moons of the giant planet Jupiter. Io is the most volcanically active world in the solar system. It’s covered by hundreds of volcanoes and pools of hot lava. Some of the volcanoes are larger than anything on Earth, and the lava is much hotter. The volcanoes can send gas and ash hundreds of miles high. Some of this material escapes Io completely – about one ton every second. It forms a wide “doughnut” around Jupiter. The activity is powered by a gravitational tug-of-war between Jupiter and some of its other big moons. They pull on Io in different directions. That heats Io’s interior, melting some of its rocks. A couple of recent studies found that Io has been at least this active since it was born. That suggests that Io and the other big moons have been locked into their current configuration since shortly after the birth of Jupiter itself. If that’s the case, then Io has been caught in a terrific tug-of-war for four and a half billion years. Jupiter rises above our moon this evening. The planet looks like a brilliant star – only the Moon and Venus outshine it. But you need binoculars to pick out Io and the planet’s other big moons. Tomorrow: gravitational “rings” around a galaxy.
