John Zollinger, Director of Commercial Banking at Home Bank, Speaking on Ways to Protect Your Financial Assets From Fraudsters

Discover Lafayette

John Zollinger, Executive Vice President and Director of Commercial Banking at Home Bank, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss the ways you can stay vigilant to fight fraudsters working 24/7 to get access to your financial assets. With over $5 billion in check fraud last year alone, it's an important topic to understand. Banks work diligently to protect their clients' financial holdings. It is a time and energy-intensive challenge and it behooves each of us to be more aware of the ways we can protect ourselves on the front end. Banking has changed dramatically from the days of teaching kids how to open a checking account and write checks. John spoke of the dangers of check fraud and how we should start relying less on paper checks in lieu of online banking solutions.  It has become commonplace for checks to be stolen and then 'washed' by eraser or chemical baths which remove the ink and allow an alteration to the original. While most checks have security features such as watermarks, threads, and holograms, and alterations can look like a third-grader did the task, with one million checks being deposited per month many fakes slip through the cracks. While artificial intelligence is used to forage out fakes, unless a check is made out for over $10,000, it is unlikely to be picked up on. So criminals make up for it in volume, and as John Zollinger says, "the check fraud business is an industry." "Stop writing checks when you can. Writing a check and handing it to somebody is probably still safe and secure. But writing a check and putting it in the mail with the USPS is not secure. There are people who steal mail out of the blue postal boxes. They will duplicate keys to the mailbox and take the mail out or they pick the box up and take the whole thing with them. USPS employees have also been implemented in fraud by stealing checks." John Zollinger is on a mission to educate bank customers and the public about the desirability of using Automated Clearing House ("ACH") transfers for payments to third parties. By making these electronic transfers directly from your bank account, you have a low-cost way to conduct a secure transaction. "ACH is so much cheaper. While it can cost $3 to $5 for every check a business will write (cost of the check, the printer toner, the envelope, the stamp, time involved to mail it, etc.) it costs 10 cents per ACH transfer. ACH transfers clear in a day or two. From a payment perspective and efficiency, you can't beat the ACH process." He also advocates for the "Positive Pay" app, an optional check fraud prevention service for businesses that use online banking. The customer uploads into Positive Pay all issued check data with information on the payee, date, amount, etc. Checks presented for payment against the bank account are compared to the information sent by the business to Home Bank. Any check not on the issued check list is sent back to the client as an exception for review, to either return or approve the item. This gives the business a chance to ferret out fraud or mistakes with ongoing assistance from the bank. "Our ability to serve clients through technology continues to improve. We spend more today on technology than on our facilities. Ten years ago the industry said checks were going away. We said the same thing five years ago, but checks are still here. I don't know if they'll ever go away unless banks say they won't continue to offer that service. Zelle, Venmo, and other cash-trading apps are very secure. They can be trusted. Especially Zelle which was created by Wells Fargo. But there is no practical difference between Zelle and Venmo." John recommends that you should be leery of almost anything and everything that comes into your email inbox with a link to click. Don't automatically trust emails as that is where hackers come in. You can head off almost anything insofar as a financial loss by taking your time to investigate the message.

Shadow of the Rainbow by Randa Lynne ZollingerThe Hansens seemed to be a contented, happy family when the kids were young. Brandon, the oldest, was the perfect son, continuing the tradition of being a great athlete like his father and grandfather before him. The twins, Jaden and Jenny, revered their older brother and sought to emulate him. As Brandon started high school and the twins began middle school, things in the idyllic American family began to change. The siblings had typical teenage issues in school as well as with their parents, but it was more than that. Fighting, suspensions, and drugs had never been in their plans. Picture-perfect on the outside, the family was jolted when Jaden, who wanted nothing more than to please his dad and older brother, failed miserably as he began to discover his sexual identity. If it hadn't been for the support of his sister and a neighbor, Jaden might have tried to end his life long before he did. While dealing with Jaden, his father was forced to confront issues neither imagined nor expected. Live through Jaden's story as he struggles to understand the ramifications of his father's haunted past and continues to forge on in his quest for the "rainbow."https://www.amazon.ca/Shadow-Rainbow-Randa-Lynne-Zollinger-ebook/dp/B09B85Q9JT/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=9781648954511&qid=1627572964&s=books&sr=1-1http://www.

Buchhinweise: L. Hechenblaikner, A. Kühbacher, R. Stupid but legal: Child Marriage in the U.S.

According to a national report, almost a quarter million US kiddies were married between 2001 and 2010. It also found, and interesting – that the highest rate of child marriage goes to (drumroll please) Idaho! The state that just voted against banning child marriage.Idaho’s current law allows anyone, no matter how young they are, to get married if both a parent and a judge consents to the marriage. So theoretically, you could marry a baby. You’d have a hard time getting said baby to remember it’s wedding vowels, but there’s no law to stop you from giving it a red hot crack! Now, most child marriages aren’t “Romeo and Juliet” situations, where 17 year olds fall in love with their high school sweetheart.Only about 1 in 7 child marriages are children marrying other minors. 77% of the children wed were underage girls marrying adult men, often with a significant age differences – some of the marriages simply legalized what would have been statutory r*ape.Like in an Alabama, where a US state judge once forced a 14-year-old girl to marry a 74-year-old man even though the age of statutory rape is 16. I say “forced”, because there’s no way a child would fall in love with an old man,... unless it’s 17 year old Bella falling in love with 110 year old Edward – which is TOTALLY NOT CREEPY AT ALL because said centenarian looks like Robert Pattison. Now, you might ask why we’re cool with letting children marry creepy old men, when science clearly tells us they can’t all be Robert Pattison.Well, like the second amendment – this problem is caused by a super outdated precedent that desperately needs an update. Back in the ye olde days, getting pregnant out of marriage was a huge deal – and many states didn’t set a minimum age of marriage – as a way of ‘protecting’ girls from having a child out of wedlock and getting burned at the stake etc. But now in Idaho, a marriage of a girl of ANY age can be approved by a judge, if the “judge determines that it is in the best interest of society that the marriage be permitted”.When might a judge find a marriage involving a female child “in the best interest of society”? Oh, that’s right, when a girl is knocked up and is standing before a judge who believes out-of-wedlock births are ruining this country. Republicans in Idaho say blocking child marriage was “an overreach of the government”, and blocked the bill. “I do not think courts should be involved in marriage at all… I think two willing people should be able to go and get married.” says Republican Bryan Zollinger. Really, Senator Zollinger – marriage, is an overreach over government? Really?Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/sciQ)

It’s a multiplier. -Brian Curtis   Resources:  - Join the Club Wealth Real Estate Agent Mastermind Facebook Group - Get info on the Business Strategy Mastermind Conference November 13th-15th 2018 in Anaheim, CA   Three Things We Learned From This Episode Be helpful, not just friendlyPeople don’t meet with us because they need a friend, but because they want to buy a house. This is why so important to make the process professional, effective, and stress free for them. No matter how charismatic we are, if we don’t make their lives easier, they’ll look for another agent. Selling and buying usually involves a lot of administrative work as well, and all of this can be outsourced to someone else.   Luxury clients tend to be savvier and have higher expectations. In the end, however, they’re just people who want the same thing as everyone else: a good customer experience. We need a marketing plan each time we give a listing presentation, and we must be able to prove that we have the expertise and the willingness to go the extra mile for them.   Guest Bio Josh Zollinger has had a successful career in sales and is noted for his excellent negotiating skills and professionalism.
