Dr. Sam Lee, Co-CEO of Cocrystal Pharma, is an expert in developing small-molecule antiviral drugs to treat COVID-19, Norovirus, influenza, avian flu, West Nile virus, Dengue, Zika, and other RNA viruses. Cocrystal uses its structure-based drug discovery platform to identify promising drug targets for potent broad-spectrum oral and inhaled antiviral therapeutics. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for vaccines and effective therapeutics to respond to viral outbreaks and prevent further transmission. Sam elaborates, "Before we talk about avian flu, let's just step back up about the strains. Influenza, as you know, includes influenza A strains, influenza B, and the C. But the public health point of view is the influenza A strains are important. These cause the pandemic flu, as well as the seasonal flu. Influenza B is roughly less than 20% of flu patients that have this influenza B. It's seasonal. It doesn't cause a pandemic influenza infection." "So we're talking about avian flu. Avian flu is mostly an influenza A strain. So, it's often classified as H5N1 or H7N9, depending on the antigen. So, why is it so important? We know this year that people isolate the avian H5N1 from cow and cow milk and humans. Avian flu is normally avian influenza that stays with the birds, the wild birds. What we see here is already past the host barrier. So instead of staying with avian, the birds, or domestic animals, now it's passed to a human. So it's a serious issue that the avian flu, H5N1, actually we see here, not only cow and farm workers are infected with it. That's a really serious concern." "We believe we have a pretty good understanding. If you look at the 1918 Spanish flu, that was actually classified as an H1N1, but several years ago, with a beautiful molecular analysis, people completed the sequencing analysis with the patient sample from 1918 Spanish flu victims. They isolated the gene. They showed that even those with H1N1 contained the avian flu sequence." #CocrystalPharma #AvianFlu #Influenza #WestNileVirus #AntiviralTherapeutics #RNAViruses #COVID19 CocrystalPharma.com Download the transcript here

Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/BuTi67hB7HY   The biomedical researchers at Georgia State University have designed a universal flu vaccine containing less variable proteins from both Influenza A and B virus including the multi-neuraminidase proteins and the universally present M2 ectodomain protein.  This vaccine has, to date, only been tested on mice but it was found to protect them from infection by a slew of diverse influenza viruses that include the influenza A seasonal variants H1N1, H5N1, H3N2, H9N2 and H7N9 as well as the Yamagata and Victoria lineage influenza B viruses.   The next step: testing in ferrets that possess respiratory tracts similar to humans.  Then, no doubt, on to the clinic.   https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1010755   #influenza #universalvaccine #influenzaA #influenzaB

According to an exclusive report from Natalie Winters at the National Pulse, it turns out that the Wuhan Institute of Virology assembled a monkeypox virus genome that allowed the virus to be identified through PCR tests, but since the researchers said that there was no monkeypox in China, they did it using a method that artificially creates fragments of the virus—which is a technique that researchers have flagged for potentially creating a “contagious pathogen.” This was done several months before the current outbreak. Furthermore, also in Wuhan, researchers there have just published a new study showing that the top researchers at the Institute of Virology appeared to be once again engaged in a form of gain-of-function research—by manipulating the H7N9 virus to be more lethal in mice and chickens. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch

Remember, when you give a vaccine to millions of people, side effects that only have a one in a million chance of occurring are going to be discovered (yes, I know that's not how the math works out here, it's just an expression).Given that Guillain-Barre is also a potential side effect for Covid, as well as many other known potential long-term effects, I'd still take my chances with the J&J vaccine. It is also an important part of the public health aspect of the vaccinations - being a single dose vaccine, it is the preferred brand for people that are more likely to miss an appointment for a second dose - like the homeless, for instance.

In this interview of Sue Grey, lawyer from Nelson who has also researched Health issues and has a degree in biochemistry, we learn that things are definitely not as they seem. She has been an activist on the battle front over the last decade endeavouring to bring transparency to so many of the issues that now are bearing down on us and now - totally surround us. She is also the Co leader of the OutDoors Party - Outdoorsparty.co.nz -  and sees clearly that humanity and the ecology of our entire biosphere is at the crossroads of either we come together as a ‘conscious’ caring humanity - and in essence a global family … or continue down the path of becoming victims to corporations in cahoots with captured Government - who themselves are caught up in their own self serving agenda to not truly engage and empower the community from the grass roots up. When did you hear them mention ‘empowering the grass roots?’  To relocalise and work cooperatively with NZ’s communities?  I start by thanking Sue for her continuous selfless effort to want to educate the NZ people on ‘other’ specific health issues that are being ignored by the Government and Health Boards. As a lawyer, she could have gone into the corporate structure and become very successful, but she knows that we as a planetary civilisation are at the precipice and as a mother she wants a healthy future and planet for her children.  I wish we had more people both male and female in NZ who are committed as we need more conscious people engaged and activated. Lock Down - Vaccinate - Reset   Today, sadly - it appears that Western governments globally are working towards locking down their people. With no apparent let up.    This is taking away choice -  freedom to choose.   Whereas Freedom is one thing -  but, it’s also a great ‘discipline’ for us as well.   The issues Sue has been involved in lately is the calling for transparency due to the rapid deployment of 5G - in relation to the lack of research on health and what is the accumulative effect on humans, animals, birds, insects and the vegetable kingdom?  Now Covid and Water Control have impinged on her valuable time. These below are some of the questions and answers that came up during this interview. That due to time constraints it has been impossible to transcribe this interview - however I trust that ‘you are able to listen’ as there is much valuable information that you need to know. Because, if you wish to know the full context of what she conveys - please listen - it is only the memory equivalent of 3 or 4 photographs   This link below was a very recent presentation to the NZ Parliamentary Health Committee by Sue and Alan Simmons of the Out Doors Party - on  both questioning and stopping the taking of our water rights away from us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct-AJNY6nT8 In today's interview, Sue was asked that when she was a candidate in the last election here in NZ, did the Labour Government mention or signal back then that if they remained in power they would fluoridate and chlorinate NZ’s water supplies throughout the nation?  Was this in their manifestos?  She said that as far as she knows - this was never flagged or mentioned.  This being the case, is this not deceitful of our Government to now set about doing this virtually behind our backs? Because this is a gigantic issue that affects the health of the whole nation. Is this what has become of NZ’s socialist Labour Government ? If David Lange ex PM of the 4th Labour government had been alive today, he would surely call his own party out? Was it Labour’s intention to always want to Nationalise more private property?  Tim mentions that when he was a teenager living near Matamata, in a farming community, the big statement then among some farmers and those involved in small business, was that Labour would eventually, one day - want to nationalise all of our farms, because they were socialists. But, for now they are wanting water … Thus the question, have our elected representatives in Wellington - run away with their own political party agenda and subtly, but very clearly made it known to all party MP’s that they must not go against the party dictate? Even if the electorate that the MP specifically represents have got an alternative view point and want their elected servant to openly debate that alternative.   ‘Toe the party line is the name of the game, especially if you want an interrupted steady income for life.’   Nationalising all Drinking Water Nationwide? So now we have Labour moving to nationalise our water - and it appears all other parliamentarians (the opposition) are silent. That the Labour Government wants control of all water taken away from District Councils and have the Government through the Department of Health control this life giving resource - the natural commons. Whereas for generations across NZ the District Councils are elected and are answerable to the local electorate. The people. This current situation means centralising Government power towards a ‘command & control’ economy. Like that of the ex Soviet Union. This is where the Central Government can now dictate what it does to our water such as chlorinate and fluoridate all water that is for drinking.  Yes, they have their standardised ‘scientific’ viewpoints but there is ample evidence that fluoridation affects children’s intellectual capabilities. See GreenplanetFM.com -   https://www.ourplanet.org/greenplanetfm/dr-paul-connett-dr-vyvyan-howard-declan-waugh-fluoride-is-a-neurotoxin-that-reduces-iq-of-children Then scroll on down to the bottom of this page and there are three other GreenplanetFM.com - links on fluoride.  Even if it’s rainwater from your roof or a spring somewhere on your land, it will come under Government control. This time to add chlorination. Because the Government Health Department who are not elected officials will do the bidding of the Government in power.  Which is strange - because for years now - multinational corporations have been extracting water out of various rural areas that have ‘water rights’ situated across NZ. This has been happening for many years and all that water has been free of charge other than a minuscule rental fee. Thus ambiguity continues to this day. Here is an interview of this. https://www.ourplanet.org/greenplanetfm/niki-gladding-should-new-zealand-be-bottling-our-water-and-sending-it-overseas The Commons  Sue mentions the Magna Carta of 1297 in England. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magna_Carta - stating that ‘water is in essence a human right’ and that it cannot be taken over as it is an integral part of the web of life and the ‘Global Commons. Listen.  The ‘Commons’ needs to be taught at all levels of the educational curriculum - so that NZers become aware of its importance.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commons COVID - this was the 2nd part of the interview.  With regard to the Covid equation Sue mentions that the Government has not complied with the legal requirements to further this Government's agenda it now wants to use lockdowns, when appropriate or needed and to roll out vaccinating the whole country. She has a link on www.outdoorsparty.co.nz - for you to see more. As a result of this interview - the following is an opinion piece by Tim   - apologies for the poor grammar and structure - due to time constraints   Wearing the Public Down Today rapid change is being forced upon us - usually by corporate expansion and enterprise and abetted by government - especially in the cases of new technologies or land developments etc. These are being continuously deployed or actioned and are forcing change due to their financial power, control and connections. In NZ the Government ‘does its bit’ by asking for submissions from the NZ public. However after decades of being continually ‘on the back foot’ - the concerned and aware public are tired, under resourced and time constrained to have to ‘continually’ complete submissions or sign petitions, that have time constraints on them - that it has become an energy sapping process of continued letter writing, going to meetings, rallies and protests with placards and signs. This is a ‘controlled’ game that the Government carry on because ‘they are all fully paid’ during all these times. As the upper controlling echelons of these political parties always remain in power - for decades.  Whilst the struggling electorate are unpaid and continually volunteer to stand up for the rights of the children of today and future generations - as well as the land and the sacredness of the environment, that sustains our very bodies. It should be incumbent on those wanting to change the laws or release new technologies  - that they pay for the public costs of submissions. User pays.  With the Government tying us down in having to write time consuming submissions, attending meetings etc, we have to ask, who really knows anything about the ones who have been chosen (hand picked)  to read or listen to these submissions - who may not necessarily be fair adjudicators or discerning of what is being conveyed, or lack the capabilities of being impartial. Hence more and more people within the community don’t believe these officials will carry their concerns forward, but instead defer to the status quo. The System is Designed to Wear Us Down. This is a carefully crafted game-plan devised by powerful interests - corporations/bankers in lockstep with whatever current Government is in power, to continually put the populace on the back foot and ‘wear them down’.  Because they have the resources and connections to power, big money, lawyers etc they eventually steam roll the little person and the ordinary man into submission. Meanwhile, the politicians draw their salary, smug in the thought that they are above it all, and are still ‘seen to be giving the people a chance’ - to voice their opinion. This is where 21st century politics has descended and no wonder people have become cynical of the political process.  What is Agenda21 and Agenda2030 We now have Agenda21 and Agenda2030 being sneakily enacted (infiltrated) across the country whilst an unconscious NZ public are totally distracted with countless other issues. Especially with Covid, contact tracing and the population being ‘readied’ for mass vaccinations, (and there may not be any trace of the Covid19 in the vaccine itself). There is so much going on. However the ‘astute’ people within the NZ public have gone around MSM and via Social Media (and it has its pitfalls) - and these people are wising up. Especially now since the Governments open door immigration policies - these many new immigrants are realising that back in their country of birth - the Covid ‘thing’ - is taking many various and strange twists - see what’s happening in Israel, Britain and South Africa but essentially all of Europe and that the farmers of India are not becoming infected!  Check out Globalresearch.ca   - in this case - https://www.globalresearch.ca/the-2020-worldwide-corona-crisis-destroying-civil-society-engineered-economic-depression-global-coup-detat-and-the-great-reset/5730652   The Wellbeing Budget, though a World First is it a Red Herring?  At present the current NZ Government has a ‘Wellbeing Budget’ which is touted as a world leading initiative - and it is - it sounds fantastic, warm, and signifies compassion. That it is produced by a Government that cares and is kind - but look behind it and there is another story. It parallels all the ubiquitous orange cones that you constantly see on so many roads and streets throughout NZ. They are training us and conditioning us to ‘stay in line’ and to obey and stop on demand. To slow us down. It’s a program that is deftly applied under the theme of public safety.  The Wellbeing Budget has some exceptionally good contingencies but it’s a red herring to showcase that the Labour lead government supposedly cares. Yet, if it is truly honest it will show health statistics that are going through the roof - Sugar usage in food and drink increases, cheap unhealthy cooking oils, obesity increases, junk food increases, medication for depression increases, divorce increases, family violence increases, mental health increases, tooth decay - suicides (numbers are now suppressed etc)  Accomodation costs increases, housing increases, immigration to pay for escalating infrastructure increases. It will also show the increased use of Monsanto’s glyphosate to spray complete paddocks ‘orange’ and that much of the Recycling System is being surreptitiously hidden in landfills. Even the continued poison 1080 use and who actually owns this company. The list goes on and the snowball gathers pace, whilst every day Joe Sixpack and Caroline Cardigan - grimly stare into their 72 inch telly, programmed and hypnotised by the 6pm news and worried that the All Blacks rugby team may lose and that their pizza delivery better not be late …    Here is Dr Ron Colman being interviewed in July 2018 on ‘genuine success indicators’ - this will bring home what it is meant to have transparent government and the challenges in implementing such a far reaching and important policy.  https://www.ourplanet.org/greenplanetfm/ron-colman-genuine-economic-indicators Is the NZ Media Captured by the State?  New Zealanders who are in their late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s realise from past experience that the NZ media seems to be coming part of the system’ - nearly like Pravda and Izvestia that were the mouthpiece of the failed Soviet Union and the communist agenda. That NZ media appears to be toeing the government line and we have to ask is it daily edging closer towards George Orwell's 1984? They have recently received $50 million from this Government and have tame journalists that will not question any discrepancies that Sue Grey points out in the Covid roll out.  Especially within the acquiescent parliamentary press gallery. This Government has made financial handouts to MSM to keep them silent especially with the 5G health narrative and now with Covid and the planned vaccination of every soul that inhabits Aotearoa. There are more questions than answers that are being ignored. Phone and book a time and take a delegation to visit your MP at their electoral office, don’t go alone - because unity is strength. Tell them that their vote hinges on ‘this meeting.’   COVID Doctors here in NZ will not speak out about Covid Vaccines because the NZ Medical Association answers to big Pharma - which is basically based in America but with ties to Britain and other pharmaceutical corporations in Europe. Which in essence is a global control mechanism that goes back to ties to the Rockefeller’s in the USA.  Hence Doctors are too afraid to speak their minds because they are terrified that they will have their license to practice revoked. This is a worldwide phenomenon and Big Pharma is in essence a legalised drug cartel and they are totally against any natural therapies because these cannot be patented. So whenever you see your doctor - he or she is very constrained in what they can say for fear of losing their licence and basically become unemployable.  Note that John D Rockefeller and his son David, who recently died at 104 were ardent uses of homeopathy - just like the British Royal Family. Can you connect some dots here? Note, hydroxychloroquine was mentioned as a cure for covid especially if you got to the patient within the first 24 hours or so. However Big Pharma instantly came out globally and clamped down on it and actually stopped it being sold here in NZ even though hydroxychloriquine has been on the market here for over 20 years. Remember how Dr Simone Gold and America's Front Line Doctors were excoriated by the US Corporate controlled media, for even mentioning that this was a cure for covid - such is the power of Big Pharma in lockstep with the 6 media conglomerates that control the US and the 7th being the BBC out of Britain.  A Global Government Coup? In the interview with Bill Watson 3 weeks ago - he mentioned that we are in the middle of a global coup especially in the West. However controlled MSM does not focus on this at all (Why would they? As they are the communication arm for it) - and in fact do everything to obscure the fact - choosing to give us scattered news items that distract us into a fragmented understanding of the global situation.  Unbeknown to most, there is a battle going on for the soul of our planet, by those that do not believe in soul, or are anti-soul. Bill intimated for those adept enough to grok the big picture that under the guise of Covid - the plan is that Bill and Melinda Gates are to vaccinate the whole human race with an untested vaccine that more and more independent and courageous doctors are saying - is not even a vaccine. Note that Sue in this Interview says’ that there is no responsibility by the vaccine manufacturers in the case of any health or death issues that may result.’ They get a free pass. Listen to her  share how Grant Robertson our Government Minister brought this in.  Sue says anyone who takes the vaccine is part of a global experiment.  The Great Reset This is also the ‘planned’ time for the Great Reset. This has been touted by the World Economic Forum out of Davos Switzerland - to be put in place across the whole Western world. (and eventually beyond) This being ‘guided’ by Klaus Schwab as the only way forward and this will bring us the digital currency - and the end of the fiat cash regime and that we will not have any cash. ‘That we will eventually not own anything and that we will be (laughably) - happy.’ The end result will be that we will be living in the Fourth Industrial revolution where the Surveillance State will become the Security State all connected in the ubiquitous silent 24/7/365 day silent hum of 5G wireless frequencies that will interfere with our bodies health - but this does not matter because we are also in the midst of a depopulation agenda that Roy Harlow so sadly over the last two weeks expounded on.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Guidestones When you die before the vaccine - you only die of COVID - when you die after the vaccine - you die by everything but the vaccine … It’s an Experimental Vaccine  The Vaccine manufactures have no liability if any injuries or deaths occur.   The vaccine manufactures have it both ways - a free pass, to both riches and no responsibility.  No responsibility for ongoing daily health Health - the NZ Government Health Authorities are not telling us how to be healthy - by taking brisk walks in nature  swimming - being barefoot on the grass, breathing fresh air - eating vital organic food, drinking unsanitised ‘vital’ water - Yes it’s expensive - but get innovative and grow food in tubs - take some time out in sunshine and taking vitamin C. It is relatively cheap now.  Eating Supermarket Factory and Industrial food is not going to bring ultimate health and vitality to your being.  Use this as your search engine.  DUCKDUCKGO.com - for all your searches - far more than Google as it does not censor. The vaccine was not brought in for COVID - COVID was brought in for the Vaccine - once you understand this - everything makes sense. At the outset, Dr. Yeadon said “I’m well aware of the global crimes against humanity being perpetrated against a large proportion of the worlds population. “I feel great fear, but I’m not deterred from giving expert testimony to multiple groups of able lawyers like Rocco Galati in Canada and Reiner Fuellmich in Germany. “I have absolutely no doubt that we are in the presence of evil (not a determination I’ve ever made before in a 40-year research career) and dangerous products. “In the U.K., it’s abundantly clear that the authorities are bent on a course which will result in administering ‘vaccines’ to as many of the population as they can. This is madness, because even if these agents were legitimate, protection is needed only by those at notably elevated risk of death from the virus. In those people, there might even be an argument that the risks are worth bearing. And there definitely are risks which are what I call ‘mechanistic’: inbuilt in the way they work. “But all the other people, those in good health and younger than 60 years, perhaps a little older, they don’t perish from the virus. In this large group, it’s wholly unethical to administer something novel and for which the potential for unwanted effects after a few months is completely uncharacterized. “In no other era would it be wise to do what is stated as the intention. “Since I know this with certainty, and I know those driving it know this too, we have to enquire: What is their motive? “The good news is that there are multiple choices available: hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, budesonide (inhaled steroid used in asthmatics), and of course oral Vitamin D, zinc, azithromycin etc. These reduce the severity to such an extent that this virus did not need to become a public health crisis.” Moderna Chief Medical Officer Admits mRNA Alters DNA by Suzanne Hamner Several prominent physicians, doctors, Sons of Liberty Media Health and Wellness expert Kate Shemirani, her colleague Dr. Kevin Corbett, and I have postulated that the current experimental mRNA injection for coronavirus, aka COVID-19, could alter one’s genetic code or DNA. Bill Gates stated it, which was included in my video “Human Genome 8 and mRNA Vaccine” on Brighteon.com. It is one reason the term “experimental human genome altering mRNA injection” has been used to describe the jab being foisted onto the mostly unsuspecting public.  While many in the media, Dr. Anthony Fauci and his merry band of chronic liars, and “fact checkers” have declared this claim as false, a video of a TEDx Beacon Street talk by Tal Zaks, chief medical officer of Moderna, Inc., one pharmaceutical company manufacturer of the experimental mRNA technology injection, confirms mRNA injection for COVID-19 can change your genetic code or DNA. This TEDx Beacon Street talk occurred in 2017. H/T to YouTube channel Silview Media Backup Channel. Zaks calls it “hacking the software of life”. In the first minute of the video Zaks states, “we’ve been living this phenomenal digital scientific revolution, and I’m here today to tell you, that we are actually hacking the software of life, and that it’s changing the way we think about prevention and treatment of disease.” [Emphasis mine.]He even repeats that they (Moderna) think of it like an operating system, which the Moderna website indicates as “Our Operating System”.At one minute in, Zaks states, “In every cell there’s this thing called messenger RNA or mRNA for short, that transmits the critical information from the DNA in our genes to the protein, which is really the stuff we’re all made out of. This is the critical information that determines what the cell will do. So we think about it as an operating system. …. So if you could actually change that, … if you could introduce a line of code, or change a line of code, it turns out, that has profound implications for everything, from the flu to cancer.” [Emphasis mine.]When “changing” a line of code or “introducing” a line of code” (referring to DNA), the “code” or DNA is then altered, meaning the individual or “subject” has now had their genome changed to what the “scientists” have coded. The individual or subject is no longer a creation of God but a creation of man, meaning the individual or subject could be the object of a “patent”. He goes on to say, the mRNA would tell the cells to “code” for the protein of the “virus”. This “viral protein” is foreign to the body. The individual’s body is making a foreign protein the immune system is to attack. When the body makes a protein the immune system then attacks, your immune system is attacking a protein your body is making, meaning what is occurring in an “auto-immune response” or “auto-immune disease”.This has been repeated a number of times by experts, physicians, nurses and countless others. As readers can see, none of us were “whistling Dixie”. Zaks talks about turning this system on; however, there is no way to turn it off. When do the cells know to stop making this “viral protein”? The cells don’t; therefore, this continues for the duration. In a normal vaccine, the immune system attacks the limited amount of “particles” in the adjuvant to produce antibodies or immune response that the body can recognize at a later time if the individual comes in contact with the same or similar “particle”.The study Zaks cites at the 3:12 minute mark can be found and read here. The abstract is contained on the NIH Pub Med Library website. In the full test of the study on ResearchGate, the mention of “Luciferase” occurs on page 10. A crucial piece of information in this study is contained on page 4 – “Ferrets immunized with 200 micrograms and challenged [exposed to influenza H7N9 via IN (intranasal)] on day 49 had viral loads below the level of detection”. If a viral load was  “below the level of detection”, two questions emerge: 1) did the ferrets even contract H7N9 through intranasal challenge; and, 2) if a viral load is below the level of detection, how do you know the animals even had a viral load? This would bring into question the efficacy of the injection. Moreover, the studies Zaks cites as occurring in humans only lasted approximately 18 months. At about the 4:00 minute mark, Zaks begins discussing mRNA vaccines for cancer. Immediately following that, Zaks discusses a children’s condition where a gene or “code” is missing that causes production of a certain enzyme critical for metabolism where the current treatment is to transplant an entire organ – in this case, the liver. Zaks proposes to inject mRNA that codes for the missing gene, a gene contained in DNA on the human genome, it would “correct” the genetic defect.Ask this question: what causes the cells/body to produce needed enzymes/proteins? Zaks answers that by saying the genetic code or DNA. So, mRNA has to alter a genetic code or the DNA for the body to produce the proteins of COVID-19 for the body to mount an immune response.Out of the words of Tal Zaks of Moderna, mRNA can alter the human genome. Whether by design or “unintended consequences”, this technology is being used to do just that. He calls this “information therapy”; although, some would call it “mad science”. In attempts to “rewrite” genetic code to correct defects, studies have shown there were “cascading failures”. In other words, changing one “defective gene” in one genome caused other genes to “fail” or cause problems. And, it was not just one subsequent gene becoming defective, but many. This is more than likely why there are over 400 adverse events surrounding the experimental mRNA injection. So, the next time someone claims these “vaccines” do not alter the human genome or DNA, you can refer that individual to Tal Zaks of Moderna, Inc. who claims otherwise. Dr. Fauci should be eating some four and twenty blackbird (crow) pie.

The increase in commercial aviation and international travel means that pandemics now spread faster than ever before. Seasonal flu, zoonotic contagions such as Ebola, swine flu and avian flu (e.g. H5N1 and H7N9), respiratory syndromes such as SARS and MERS, and now COVID-19 (the 2019 novel coronavirus) have affected millions worldwide. Add the ever-present threat of terrorism and biological warfare, and the possibility of large proportions of your workforce being incapacitated is a lot stronger than you might think. How would your business fare if 50% or more of your employees, including those you rely on to execute your business continuity plan, were afflicted by illness – or worse? Although nothing can be done to prevent pandemics, their impact can be significantly mitigated. Business Continuity and the Pandemic Threat explains how.

And the common thread between these and other zoonotic diseases: humanity's broken relationship with animals. In general terms, I seize the opportunity to ask Dr. Greger his expert opinion on all my (and perhaps your) lingering questions about what exactly is happening. Where it started. Where it's going. How we prevent future pandemics. And how we survive this one. In specific terms, we explore:What is the difference between COVID-19 and a typical flu?How exactly is it being transmitted? Why do some fall gravely ill while others experience only mild symptoms? What is herd immunity and what is it going to take to get there? How do we make sure our immune response is intact and healthy? What is the effectiveness of Vitamin D and Zinc supplementation? Why are there so many tests, which one should I take and when should I consider getting tested?Should I be disinfecting everything (like my groceries)? How dangerous are airplanes? How important is hand washing? What exactly is the utility of masks and does it matter what kind of mask I wear? andWhat are the most effective things we should focus on for prevention? And perhaps the most fundamental question of all, how can we stop the emergence of pandemics in the first place? The answer begins with the dismantling of our industrialized factory farming infrastructure. Not only are America’s factory farms vile for the animals and the workers that slaughter them, but they are essentially breeding grounds for future pandemics. This is a call for the eradication of these systems--a moral imperative if we want to preserve not only our environment but the long-term viability of our species. This is an important, alarming, and downright terrifying moment of truth. So pay attention. The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. In 2019, HeiQ was awarded the 2019 Swiss Environmental Award for HeiQ Clean Tech because of their solution to reduce environmental footprint of polyester dyeing by 30-40% in terms of saving 30-50% water, energy and CO2 emissions. But most importantly, reducing the cost to the manufacturers, creating an AFFORDABLE GREEN TECHNOLOGY!  In a world of fast fashion, rising global temperatures, strained clean water resources and seriously unhealthy pollution levels, the fashion industry is ripe for this type of innovative solution.  The clothing and textile industry has an ecological footprint which is far from sustainable. In 2017, the industry emits 1.7 billion tonnes of CO2 annually, is responsible for extensive water use and pollution, and produces 2.1 billion tonnes of waste annually. (source: WWF, Changing Fashion, The clothing and textile industry at the brink of radical transformation, 2017) https://www.wwf.ch/sites/default/files/doc-2017-09/2017-09-WWF-Report-Changing_fashion_2017_EN.pdf Carlo and I also discuss the gender balance or lack-there-of in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)  as well as how the numbers currently break down at ETH. The last 12 hires at HeiQ have been women, but he makes it clear that their mission is to hire the best.  But, he says, “That means we hire the best!” (gender not a factor) We talk about the many “near deaths” disruptive, new technologies go through, including HeiQ.  Carlo also emphasizes how important it is to have good timing in addition to a cutting edge product or solution. https://www.amazon.com/Loonshots-Nurture-Diseases-Transform-Industries/dp/1250185963 Lastly and with unbelievable great timing, he announces their newest innovation, Viroblock NPJ03 antiviral textile technology which was tested effectively against the Coronavirus!  “HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03 is a unique combination of vesicle and silver technologies designed to inhibit the growth and persistence of bacteria and viruses. The HeiQ vesicle technology targets lipid-enveloped viruses (such as coronavirus) providing rapid virus deactivation, while the HeiQ silver technology inhibits the replication of both bacteria and viruses. HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03 can be applied to a wide spectrum of textile surfaces including face masks, air filters, medical gowns, curtains, drapes, and more.  Besides testing on human coronavirus (229E), HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03 also demonstrated dramatically improved reduction of virus infectivity against Influenza types H1N1, H5N1, H7N9, and also Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). For more information about Coronavirus, visit the CDC website. To learn more about HeiQ Viroblock, email us at info@heiq.com.” I am truly thrilled to be able to highlight stories like Carlos and Heiq’s, both from an innovation as well as a potential future investment perspective.  While they are not currently a publicly traded company, we hope to see them in the not-so-distant future enter the public markets. Please share far and wide as the world needs to hear this story as well as be inspired to continue to carry the torch of innovators developing both profitable and purposeful companies! https://www.amazon.com/Purpose-Incorporated-Turning-Competitive-Advantage/dp/0692999639 https://digitalswitzerland.com/2016/07/12/founder-week-carlo-centonze-heiq/ https://heiq.com/

Dr. Michael Callahan is CEO and co-founder of the Zika Foundation. He is a highly respected “physician scientist”,  who is board-certified in internal medicine, infectious disease, tropical medicine and mass casualty care, and is on both the clinical and research faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Callahan has clinical appointments globally, including in Thailand, Indonesia, Panama, and Nigeria. From 2005-2012, Dr. Callahan established Prophecy, the first rapid deployment clinical research capability for catastrophic infectious diseases outbreaks, such as Ebola. Dr. Callahan has served as special advisor on infectious disease to two presidents, the Secretaries of Defense and of Health and Human Services, and  the Office of the Commissioner of the FDA. Dr. Callahan has been deployed to 7 mass casualty disease outbreaks, including Ebola, Marburg, H5N1 and H7N9 bird flu, and MERS. He used his experience with dengue to launch the Zika Foundation, where he is accelerating sustainable and low-cost interventions to protect women and men from Aedes mosquitos, which transmit dengue, chikungunya and the Zika virus.  His mission is to ensure that the 64 million pregnancies that occur every year in the tropical Americas are kept safe from Zika, and to prevent the epidemic of paralytic Guillain-Barre Syndrome that may well occur in southern nations over the next five years. The interview that you’re about to see challenges our basic understanding of the Zika virus. Dr. Callahan reveals, for example, that new research clearly demonstrates that Zika virus can have long-term neurological effects in adults. He discusses how the aerial spraying efforts, so common in South Florida, are actually ineffective and inappropriate for targeting the specific mosquito that transmits the virus. However, Dr. Callahan does provide us with some very important, and actionable, tools for reducing our risk of contracting Zika, both in terms of what we can do to reduce the prevalence of the Aedes mosquito and also how we can protect ourselves day-to-day. It’s clear that we have to rewrite the book as it pertains to our understanding of mosquitoes, specifically as it relates to the Aedes mosquito that serves as the carrier of the Zika virus. Unlike what we’re used to, this mosquito lives indoors, and, according to Dr. Callahan, is actually able to watch our eyes to determine when is the best time to inflict its bite. Dr. Callahan explores the effectiveness of various insect repellents and even touches upon his research dealing with genetically modified male mosquitoes in an attempt to limit the reproduction of the mosquito that carries this threatening virus.  If you enjoyed today’s interview, click here to watch more episodes of the Empowering Neurologist.

This is Special English. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news.China&`&s environmental inspectors have named and shamed more cities for poor air quality control as the fight against smog continues.Inspectors looked at 18 cities in north China&`&s Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province, using unannounced checks at night and undercover methods. The Ministry of Environmental Protection found that Handan city in Hebei Province continues to illegally operate coal-fired boilers. The boilers have been dismantled and further investigations are underway. In Cangzhou city in the same province, an oil pipe maker, a major source of emissions, was not included in the list of companies to halt production on heavily polluted days.A cement producer in Beijing used more electricity than usual in December when it should have suspended production. Two other cement firms were wrongly exempted from production suspensions. The environment ministry has criticized several other cities for not doing enough in curbing the use of "scattered coal". Scattered coal is burned by households or small factories for heating and is much dirtier than that used by thermal plants, which have the equipment to reduce emissions.China is intensifying efforts to fight pollution and environmental degradation after decades of growth left the country saddled with problems including smog and contaminated soil. This is Special English. The new strain of H7N9 bird flu virus confirmed earlier this month could become drug-resistant. A leading specialist in respiratory diseases warns that it might be resistant already.Human cases of the flu have been rising in China. Two human cases of the new strain were reported in Guangdong province. It shows resistance to a commonly used drug in the prevention and treatment of flu.Experts say although the two patients are resistant to the drug, it has been effective for most human H7N9 cases. This means that most H7N9 viruses have not mutated to the new strain. The experts said that although the new H7N9 strain shows resistance to the drug, the drug could still have an effect on the strain. Both patients have used the drug before, so it is not known whether the drug resistance is caused by previous use of the dug or by a mutation of the virus.Scientists say the possible drug-resistant nature of the new strain deserves more attention. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing.China has issued a revised regulation on improving education for the disabled. The regulation was signed by Premier Li Keqiang and will take effect in May.The revision stressed stepping up efforts in developing compulsory, vocational, preschool and senior secondary education for the disabled. For compulsory education, disabled students should be enrolled in normal or special schools near to their home. Those who cannot attend school in person should have teachers visit or receive distance education. Disabled students in regular schools should be taught by teachers with experience in special education. The regulation says vocational education for the disabled should focus on skill cultivation and career guidance. It also stresses raising payment for special education workers, allocating proper funds for the education of disabled people in government budgets and offering subsidies to disabled students with financial difficulties. The initial regulation was enacted in 1994 to guarantee the rights to education for the disabled. This is Special English.International schools in China are posing new challenges for parents who spend huge sums but often find themselves unprepared for a range of issues. The Legal Daily reports that in top-tier cities including Beijing and Shanghai, many parents send their children to international schools to allow them early preparation for studying abroad. Admission has become more competitive amid China&`&s rising number of high income earners and some schools now assess parental participation in community activities before admitting a child. One recent report said international schools in China lack standards in tuition, vary greatly in educational quality, while school ownership is sometimes unclear.International schools in the country come in different forms and many follow the International Baccalaureate curriculum or that of the country they represent. As a new approach, some public high schools have also opened international classes to offer a quick transition abroad. They have become popular among parents, though native English speakers are in the minority as Chinese students comprise 90 percent of classes. You&`&re listening to Special English. In a sun-synchronous orbit, a satellite circles the Earth at the same rate that the Earth orbits the sun. With a geosynchronous orbit, the satellite matches the rotation of the Earth.Scientists say the use of the Long March 8 will extensively reduce the launch costs of low-and middle-orbit satellites, giving it bright prospects in the commercial launch market. This is Special English.China&`&s first high level biosafety laboratory has been accredited and will be fully operational soon. The Chinese Academy of Sciences say the certificate was issued by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment. The lab is based in Wuhan, the capital city of central China&`&s Hubei Province. Here is the news.New kinds of vaccines for the H7N9 strain of bird flu virus have been approved for clinical trials by China&`&s top drug regulator. The Beijing Food and Drug Administration said it will continue to provide assistance and guidance for clinical trials of the vaccines so they can enter the market as soon as possible. The vaccines have been developed by a state-owned enterprise in Beijing. There are currently no vaccines for the H7N9 strain of bird flu available on the market in China or overseas. The flu is most active in winter and spring. Two human cases of H7N9 have been reported in Beijing this year, with both patients suspected of having been exposed to live poultry. Both are in critical condition. One woman died after being infected with the bird flu in southwest China&`&s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The central government has intensified measures to control the spread of the flu, including shutting down live poultry markets. This is Special English. The World Health Organization says the shortsightedness rate among Chinese juveniles ranks first in the world, with 70 percent of high school and college students being shortsighted. The rate is almost 40 percent in primary school students, while it is only 10 percent for their peers in the United States.A World Health Organization research report says the number of shortsighted people in China has reached 600 million, approaching half of the country&`&s total population.Experts attribute the soaring shortsightedness rate in China to the unhealthy lifestyles and learning styles which parents impose on their children. On the one hand, to achieve high scores in exams, children spend too much time studying indoors and don&`&t enough time outside in the sunlight. On the other hand, a growing number of high-tech products, including smart phones and tablet PCs, make children focus their eyes and attention on fluorescent screens for long periods of time, resulting in excessive eye fatigue.Experts suggest that youngsters maintain a proper balance between study and rest so as to protect their eyesight, and parents should play a correspondingly active role in the process. You&`&re listening to Special English. The outline was given in 2015 to improve transportation links in the area. It also includes moving some of Beijing&`&s low-end industries to neighboring areas. The high-speed intercity trains aim to build a modern transportation system. A unified smart prepaid traffic card has been used in 12 cities in the region, and more cities will be included by the end of the year.In addition, a network of high-speed trains covering the whole region has been approved; and another intercity railway linking Beijing and Tianjin&`&s Binhai New Area is expected to be completed by 2020.The Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway was the first of its kind in China. Each of them received 16 parcels on average last year, making university campuses key areas of competition for express delivery companies. The volume of deliveries and on-campus management of the companies&`& operations pose problems for college administrators. Two years ago, parcels delivered to university campuses accounted for 5 percent of the national total, which helped to create 70,000 jobs. A report says that without unified and centralized distribution terminals, the "last kilometer transport" to campuses remains chaotic in many universities.More than 65 percent of express companies in Guangdong Province conduct their on-campus business via a "stall model". Parcels are scattered on the ground in the care of a courier who waits to pass them on to the recipients. Different companies&`& stalls open at different times and in random locations. This means that many students do not receive their parcels on time. The report says that the situation is the same in Beijing, which has the largest overall campus delivery business in China. The report suggests that on campus courier stations should be designated as public welfare facilities and should be part of the campus infrastructure serving teachers and students. Regular shipments are to start on April 1, after a successful trial last month. Normally, it takes more than 30 days to transport seafood by sea from Pakistan to ports in South China&`&s Guangdong province. Now it takes only around 10 days for the seafood to be transported and cleared by customs on the land route. The wholesale price of those seafood products will drop by 10 to 20 percent after the shipments become regular.China is Pakistan&`&s biggest seafood importer, with around 75 percent of the country&`&s shrimp products sold to China. This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Here is the news. President Xi Jinping has called for improved birth, employment and elderly policies to cope with the country's aging population in a "timely, scientific and comprehensive" manner. Xi made the remarks in a written instruction made public recently. He says coping with the aging population is crucial for development and hundreds of millions of people's well-being. He calls for better top-down design based on current situations and future expectations. The president stresses that this issue should be put on high agenda and relevant work should be carried out during the 2016 to 2020 period. China has well over 200 million people aged 60 or above, more than 15 percent of the total population. The figure is expected to reach 243 million by 2020. Old age care lags far behind demand and varies greatly between regions. In a separate written instruction, Premier Li Keqiang has urged authorities to take a scientific approach to policies and suggestions on the aging issue. In a recent meeting, Wang Yong, head of the National Working Commission on Aging, has urged related departments to get down to work. He says the focus should be on pressing issues for the elderly, so they feel the benefit. This is NEWS Plus Special English. A recent government guideline on urban planning has sparked heated debate among Internet users over opening up gated residential communities to public road system; and an online poll shows that a majority of participants oppose it. The guideline says the roads in the newly established communities will be open to the public, becoming part of the urban road system. The old communities will gradually connect their roads to the public roads. That is to better utilize the urban land and optimize the urban road network. The news on gated communities triggered uproar among Internet users. The news was forwarded 15,000 times and generated 3,600 comments overnight on Sina Weibo, a twitter-like microblogging site. Many Internet users have expressed concern over the potential risks from opening up the gated communities, including noise and air pollution, traffic congestion and public safety. One Internet user says such highlight in the guideline might violate the country's property law, since the home owners also paid for the roads in the communities when they bought the apartments. In a latest development, a senior judge has hinted at possible revisions to the law when responding to the public concern about the opening up. While expounding the 2007 Property Law, the senior judge with the Supreme People's Court says there is still a continuing process to realize the rule of law through legislation. Beijing plans to almost double the number of air monitoring stations to give a better idea about the true state of the city's air quality. An extra 30 monitoring stations will be added to the 35 already in operation. The stations will cover middle schools, mountainous areas and rural areas, and there will also be more monitor vehicles. Currently, the 35 existing stations observe six categories of pollutants including PM2.5, a major contaminant for Beijing's bad air. Environment authority says the upgrade will provide more data about the city's air quality. Technical preparation of the new monitor stations has been completed, though there is no timeframe for when the new stations will come online. For Beijing and its surrounding regions, the government has set a target of reducing pollution by 40 percent from 2013 levels by 2020. A senior environment official says the city's air quality has improved over the last two years. The authorities have increased efforts to reduce air pollution in the wake of the city's first "red alerts" in December, when smog engulfed the city. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Young people in China who plan to study in the United States are being advised to seek alternatives to the Scholastic Assessment Test, as a recent overhaul has made it more challenging for non-English speakers. A consultant director of the Beijing-based AW Education International says she was advising all her clients to sit the American College Test instead. This is another college placement test in the United States and suitable for those who plan to enroll in the fall semester of 2017. New sample questions from the revised Scholastic Assessment Test do not include many of the question types that Chinese students are usually good at. More time will be required for the students to prepare for the test if they want good scores. Other overseas study consultancy firms have also suggested that their clients turn to other tests. Many Chinese students were admitted to some of the best American universities after scoring high or even full marks in the former tests, but the changes may mean it is no longer easy for Chinese students to excel. Consultancy experts anticipated a reduction in the number of Chinese students taking the test this year. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Twenty-five people have been punished after they were implicated in the illegal disposal of hazardous chemicals, which killed four people in east China's Shandong Province. In October, two of the victims, Zhang Linde and Chen Jixin, hired a tanker to transport dangerous liquid chemical waste to an abandoned coal mine in the province. The two, their driver and a supercargo died from poisoning as a result of dumping the chemicals. Police say twenty-five suspects have been dealt with according to criminal procedures while several others are at large. Five local companies were involved in the case and have been suspended operation. The polluted area has been enclosed in curtain grouting, and the local environment agency is decontaminating the mine. This is NEWS Plus Special English. More than three million cases were classified as Class B infectious diseases, which resulted in 16,600 deaths. HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, rabies, hepatitis, and human infection of H7N9 avian influenza accounted for almost 99 percent of deaths in this category. Category C diseases were responsible for more than 3.4 million cases and 160 deaths. With great verve and passion, Chinese people around the world have celebrated their Lantern Festival in both traditional and trendy ways. The festival, which fell on Feb. 22 this year, brought an end to this year's Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations. It is the day when people see themselves starting a new life in a new year. In China, Lantern Festival is an important family day, but unlike Spring Festival when people stay home for family dinners, it is a day for going out and about. In southwest China's Sichuan Province, 20 dragon dance troupes gathered in Luxian County. A team of dancers under a long "dragon costume" painted red or gold used poles to manipulate the dragon's head and serpentine body. They danced to the accompaniment of drums, twisting the dragon as it danced, shaking its head and swinging its tail through the crowds. Another folk tradition, the Yangko dance, was performed in Yan'an city, the "red cradle" of the Chinese revolution in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. Staging the dance on Lantern Festival has become a tradition in the city. This year, around 3,000 performers in bright costumes with colorful umbrellas, fans and red ribbons danced to local folk music and drums. In Taiwan, the annual lantern exhibition has as its centerpiece a 26-meter figure of the Monkey King, the leading character in the Chinese classic "Journey to the West" to celebrate the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac. In Shanghai, the Yuyuan Garden Fair not only presents traditional lanterns but also the latest high-tech lighting. With a monkey theme, the lantern fair features lasers and pop music. The modern shows attract huge numbers of people. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Tourists from the Chinese mainland are spending more in Taiwan than any other group. Local paper Economic Daily News reports that Japanese tourists were used to top the list for highest average expenditure per person daily when traveling in Taiwan. It is the first time that Chinese mainland tourists have taken the top spot since Taiwan opened up its tourism to visitors from Chinese mainland in 2008. According to Taiwan's tourism authority, every traveler from Chinese mainland on average spent 230 U.S. dollars per day, more than the average expenditure of 220 dollars Japanese spent in the first three quarters last year. Also, every Chinese mainland tourist on average spent almost 123 dollars on shopping, or 40 dollars more than that spent by a Japanese tourist. Japanese tourists have cut down on overseas spending as the yen devaluated sharply and domestic consumption tax rose. The daily expense of Japanese and Chinese mainland tourist in 2014 was 243 and 242 dollars respectively. This is NEWS Plus Special English. China's box office sales totaled 580 million yuan, roughly 88 million U.S. dollars, on Valentine's Day, representing a new high from previous years. China Film News reports that the box office surged by more than 150 percent from the same day last year. More than half of the sales were generated by "Mermaid", a sci-fi comedy by Stephen Chow, a famed Hong Kong director and comedian. "The Monkey King 2" took the second place with around 95 million yuan, while "From Vegas to Macau III", starring Hong Kong actors Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, scored 85 million yuan to come in third. The Valentine's Day box office in 2016 increased markedly due to the date closely following the Spring Festival holiday, which ended on Feb. 13th. The newspaper says the box office surge during the Spring Festival holiday, which totaled 3 billion yuan from Feb. 8 to 13, spilled over into the Valentine's Day. For the past two years, Valentine's Day was several days before or after the holiday. This is NEWS Plus Special English.

Here is the news.Chinese scientists have used a targeted antibody to significantly reduce H7N9 avian flu symptoms in monkeys. The study demonstrates patients infected with H7N9 virus often end up dead after severe pneumonia and systemic inflammation caused by acute lung infection. Part of the high death-rate of H7N9 is due to very limited effective treatment options. The research results have been published in the British medical journal "Clinical Infectious Diseases". In the study, African green monkeys were inoculated with the H7N9 virus and treated intravenously with an antibody. The treatment markedly reduced lung infections and systemic inflammation. The results show promising progress on helping treat the virus in humans. The study was led by Sun Shi-hui from Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, and Zhao Guang-yu from the Academy of Military Medical Science.Since the H7N9 avian flu killed three people in China in March 2013, the flu has repeatedly cropped up in winter and spring seasons. The study concludes "complement inhibition may be a promising adjunctive therapy for severe viral pneumonia". This is NEWS Plus Special English.Chinese experts emphasized safety when giving children medication, as they called for improved healthcare for 20 percent of the nation's population.Experts from a children rehabilitation center say that improper use of antibiotics is blamed for more than one third of China's deaf-mute children under the age of seven. China has more than 3,500 categories of drug products, with fewer than 60 for children's use only. Many instruction books do not contain information for children's dosage, or only have descriptions such as "children use with caution" or "a reduced amount must be used".Some Chinese parents are found to have considered their children "miniature adults" and given their children reduced amounts of adult medications.Experts have warned of adverse reactions when doing this. They attribute the problem to the severe shortage of pediatricians in China.China has fewer than 70 children's hospitals with less than 260,000 hospital beds for children. According to the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the figures mean that China is lacking at least 200,000 pediatricians by the standards of developed countries. This is NEWS Plus Special English.More than 30,000 Beijing couples have applied to have a second child since the city eased its one-child policy in February last year.According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, of the 30,000 applicants, almost 29,000 were approved. The number is lower than the 50,000 expected. An official from the commission says many couples who are allowed to have a second child have chosen not to do so, but this does not mean they won't have a second child in the future. The official says the major reason for not having a second child include the consideration for the economic and time cost for raising a second child, and the idea that having one child is enough.Beijing is still preparing for an increase of 50,000 births each year. An extra 1,000 beds will be added in hospitals in Beijing within three years. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing.A short, sharp flash of radio waves from a mysterious source up to 5 billion light years from Earth has been detected by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization's Parkes radio telescope in eastern Australia. The organization is Australia's national science agency. Swinburne University of Technology PhD student Emily Petroff "saw" the burst live, the first time anything like this has been seen by astronomers around the world.Lasting only milliseconds, the first such radio burst was discovered in 2007 by astronomers combing old data archives for unrelated objects.Six more bursts, apparently from outside the galaxy, have now been located with Parkes telescope in New South Wales, and a seventh in Puerto Rico.Astronomers worldwide have been vying to explain the phenomenon.Petroff said these bursts are generally discovered weeks, months or even more than a decade after they happened; and she just happened to be the first to catch one in real time.Confident that she would spot a "live" burst, Petroff had an international team of astronomers poised to make rapid follow-up observations, at wavelengths from radio to X-ray.After seeing the burst go off, the team swung into action on twelve other Parkes telescopes around the world, as well as space based telescopes. The 64-meter wide Parkes radio telescope in the central west of New South Wales claimed a place in history in July 1969 when it received television transmissions of Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon.

Just how serious is the situation regarding the H7N9 virus in China? Last week alone there were at least five newly-infected human H7N9 cases coming from four provinces here in China. There was much concern prior to the Lunar New Year holiday when millions upon millions of Chinese people moved across the country to go home--many to the countryside and at risk from coming into contact with live poultry. It's probably too early to tell what impact on the virus the Lunar New Year movement has had but should we be concerned? Has the Chinese government done enough to deal with this or, at least, assuage public worries? Are we being kept informed of all the developments and what scenarios could pan out with the H7N9 virus in the near future? Less than 50 people  have died in China from the threat of H7N9 Flu so now the US populace is being threatened with a governmental "State of Emergency" that will mandate flu shots for everyone regardless of any risk to your personal health or religious objections   The rational is that everyone must be vaccinated for the good of all people, yet many groups have been given exemptions.  Seems to me to be an irrational, Rationale.   We have BioAcoustically examined this NEW Flu.  We plan to discuss its implications for your health, who/what created this threat and if our legal team allows, we will release math-based antidotes and information that can help you support your personal choices for your family.  Public Software has been created that will allow you to Self-Monitor Damages using Public Software.

Dr Kevin Fong concludes a two-part special looking back at the extraordinary events which unfolded a decade ago when the disease known as SARS first emerged onto an unsuspecting world. In a matter of days SARS had travelled around the globe from a hotel room in Hong Kong, and would go on to infect thousands of people, in dozens of countries. But standing between us and the virus were hundreds of healthcare workers who risked their lives to fight against and contain this unknown deadly disease, some of whom paid the ultimate price. Kevin travels to Hong Kong and Toronto to meet the survivors. With concerns rising over H7N9 and MERS, Kevin asks what lessons have we learned since the first SARS outbreak and would those who stepped up to protect us back then, do so again?

Also this week, we know that standardised mortality rates are tricky and have to be interpreted carefully. David Spiegelhater, Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at the university of Cambridge, explains why a figure of 13 000 excess deaths in NHS hospitals is “number abuse”.
