Should I Buy a Bond Fund? Ep #206

Do you have bond funds in your portfolio? Many people understand the way that bonds work, but they may not know how bond funds work. El has written in to ask this question which I will answer in the listener questions segment.  Before we get to that retirement question, we'll take a look at a MarketWatch article titled Are You in Retirement Hell? It was such a catchy title that I had to check it out.  The article expresses the author's struggle with finding challenge and meaning in retirement. You won't want to miss the ways that you can avoid your own retirement hell.  Outline of This Episode [2:32] Are you in retirement hell? [5:38] How to prevent retirement hell [6:56] How do bond funds work? [12:53] What are alternative options to bond funds? [16:52] Does John have enough money to retire? Are you in retirement hell? Retirement is a time of fun and relaxation. You no longer have exhausting work schedules, long commutes, or alarm clocks waking you up every morning. Every day is yours to do as you wish.  Passing the days pursuing leisurely activities like playing golf or visiting the grandkids may be just perfect for some laid-back retirees, but for those looking for more challenging pursuits, these carefree days could quickly turn into retirement hell.  You can recognize if you are in retirement hell if you are feeling lost and vulnerable. You may even sink into a depression as the activities that you once enjoyed feel empty and meaningless.  How to fix (or prevent) retirement hell In the article, the author mentions that he didn't break out of retirement hell until he finally sat down and defined his concept of fine.  Contentment is an important part of retirement, it's so important that I even discussed it once in a previous episode with Fritz Gilbert. When you're done listening to this episode, pop back over to that one and have a listen.  I always like to say that you shouldn't be retiring away from something, instead retire to something. It's important to consider what you will do with those extra 40 hours a week that you now have at your disposal.  You don't want to wait until you are in the thick of retirement hell to figure this out. Try creating a practice retirement with some of your vacation time. Take a couple of weeks off and don't go anywhere or do anything exciting. Instead, try passing the days as you would like to when you retire.  How do bond funds work? A bond fund is similar to a mortgage, but you have a group of investors and a company instead of the mortgage lender and home buyer.  Bonds can be purchased individually and held to maturity or they can be traded. Bonds are similar to stocks in that they can go up or down in value but they have different interest rates and different rates of maturity.  To spread out the risk of buying individual bonds, most investors choose to invest in a basket of bonds or a bond mutual fund. The risk is spread in the same way that you spread out the risk in your stock portfolio.  What are alternative options to bond funds? If you aren't happy with the bond funds that you have now try Googling portfolio immunization. Portfolio immunization means that you match your retirement liabilities with your retirement assets.  The way to do this is to purchase a bond in advance so that it matures the year that you need the cash flow. The specific benefit of this strategy is holding the bond until maturity. By holding the bond until it matures you remove the interest rate risk.  Make sure to stay tuned until the very end where I answer John's question about whether he has enough money to retire. You may be surprised by my recommendation.  Resources & People Mentioned Boomer Benefits MarketWatch - Are You in Retirement Hell? I feel like I say this about a lot of my friends that I have on the podcast, but John Caution is one of the weirdest and funniest people I know. I’m happy to talk to John endlessly about funny things that people we both know did 15 years ago, but, in this interview, we talk about the legacy of Weekend Nachos. We talk about the trolling instinct, the impulse to create — either in riff form or otherwise, and being in a band that defined the identity of a lot of angry but funny social misfits. I laughed pretty hard during this interview, and I laughed even harder while relistening to it. John’s instinct for saying hilarious things and pushing people’s buttons remains as strong as ever, even as a suburban father. College is CRAZY expensive. As a parent, where do you start planning for your child's Higher Ed? There is so much competing for money. How much should you be saving? What are ways that can plan for the cost of college other than loans? In Part 2 of this two-part series, John Hupalo, founder of My College Corner and Invite Education, joins Erik Garcia, CFP®, and Dr. Matt Morris, LPC, LMFT to wrestle with these tough college planning and college funding questions. Episode Highlights: John mentions the only factor that will not change around higher education. (3:59) John shares when the idea of the shifting sands started. (4:48) John shares that student loans should be the last resort and not the first option to pay for college. (9:14) Does John think that kids who work through college to help pay for college tend to outperform kids who don't work through college? (13:20) What are some tools that families have access to that they can use to pay for college? (14:43) John mentions the program in Louisiana called the Student Tuition and Revenue Trust (START). (19:02) How does John help people make decisions around taking on student debt? (31:51) John shares why the federal student loan program is beneficial. (33:24) John shares the two reasons why student loan debt is good. (46:16) Key Quotes: “There's a myth out there that if you save too much, you're going to be hurt in the financial aid process and there's a myth out there because it's a myth.” - John Hupalo “I think there has to be student loan debt because when properly used, you can apply that to get the leverage of the investment and get a return on that...I say though, student loans should be the last resort, not the first option to pay for college.” - John Hupalo “The young adults, no longer your toddler, have a responsibility here. Right? The more skin they have in the game, and the more it's real for them, the more success I think that they can have. And finally, it’s Joseph’s turn to convince John about his entry into the MTS Hall of Fame this week: Kid Creole and The Coconuts. Does John agree? Did Joseph get him mixed up with another Kid Creole? All this and more on the new episode of the Musical Taste Society. Like and share and all that good stuff, yeah?

Last week we listened to the new singles that came out from Lady Gaga and Tove Lo, and it was a day for the gays. But before we get into that, Dean and John catch you up on life in a tiny, small, ever shrinking amount of quarantine space. Does John ever sleep? What day is it? Where are we? There's restaurants using mannequins to fill the empty space in order to keep guests socially distant, but how would that even work. And if that wasn't enough, smart AI sex robots are selling out so quickly that manufactures can't keep up with demand. Which leads Dean to try and explain how sex robots are the best new thing in the world. John doesn't take much convincing, a squirting, choking, powered Daddy is all he needs to spend his money on. But music is not far from our minds as we explore the new era that Lady Gaga is about to embark upon, as well as Tove Lo's ultimate relationship revenge fantasy, including a deep suspicion that Dean and John share about whether she may have had a Twincest moment herself.

During this 183rd episode of “Marketing Today,” host Alan Hart interviews John Harrobin, chief marketing officer at Audible. Audible is an Amazon company, founded in the late 1990s out of an oral storytelling tradition. They began as an audiobook medium and have expanded to be a subscription service, including original programming, access to newspapers and magazines, and free short-form content. Harrobin’s previous experience includes chief marketing officer at Verizon and working with NBC Universal. On the show today, Harrobin discusses the audio content market, how his professional background led him to marketing, mentorship, the future of his industry, and the future of marketing in general. He also discusses the importance of diversity in marketing departments and on boards. Harrobin views marketing as being “right in the center of the action. What I really love is driving growth and launching products. That’s where you really get immediate gratification in the form of metrics and customer feedback. Is what you are doing working now? If not, you know how to adjust.” What sets Audible apart? “Our goal, in many cases, is to guide creators, provide them the data, what they should expect with this. Also, help them market, help them reach new audiences, and dimensionalize their own brand… We like to consider ourselves the best partner because we can provide better results through our reach and strength of distribution in marketing. We want to help build their personal brand and work with them on what they want to accomplish with the project, so we want to be fulfilling to the creator, and we want to be easy and fun to work with." His thoughts on the future of marketing are: "The role of marketers is evolving, and I think we just need to recognize it because, I don't know, 20 years from now, we're not going to be wanting to be marketed to in the same way that we are today." How did John make his way into the world of venture and come to be a Partner @ Lightspeed? How did that lead to his founding Unusual? How did his father's MS diagnosis change his mentality towards both investing and how he views the world? What were John's biggest takeaways from his 12 years with the Lightspeed partnership? 2.) Where does John feel the bar needs to be raised in venture? What does the current product not offer? What do seed-stage founders fundamentally need? How have Unusual structured the firm to provide this? How was the fundraise for John? What does John know post-closing that he wishes he had known at the beginning? What advice would John give to aspiring emerging managers? Why is LP diversity so important to John? 3.) Why does John believe taking multi-stage money at seed is not in the best interests of the founder? How does John explain this logically to founders? Does John agree with Semil Shah, "founders are voting with their feet and choosing multi-stage funds"? Why does John believe to be truly best in class, you have to specialise? Does this not go against the data of Benchmark, Sequoia, Founders Fund, all generalist funds, having the best returns? 4.) How does John think about being company vs being founder first? What does one do when alignment erodes between the interest of the firm and the interest of the founder? How does John look to build a relationship of trust and honesty with his founders? What works? What does not work? How does John feel about VCs being friends with their founders? 5.) What is the most challenging element of John's role today with Unusual? Who is the best board member John has ever sat on a board with? Why and what did he learn? What would John most like to change about the world of venture today? What would he like to remain the same? Assuming Britain makes the leap… what's next for the UK and for Europe? Will the US help us out? Will the Chinese take an interest? And WTF is happening in France…? With over 53 years as a foreign reporter (including many spent as ‘the BBC Common Market Correspondent’) John Simpson has an idea or two about what we might be facing. On this unmissable episode John and producer Lisa Francesca Nand debate the reasons behind the vote to leave and delve into the possibilities that might befall both the EU and Britain if/when we leave our biggest neighbouring trading block.   On this episode we cover   Does John mind being called veteran Veteran is better than ‘venerable’ The three Vs of getting old The UK being in a bit of a civil war state since the referendum Like Cromwell fighting Charles I John being the ‘BBC Common Market Correspondent’ in the 70s General de Gaulle blocking Britain from joining Being involved from the start would have been a better fit Lisa having enjoyed being part of Europe John hating the idea of Visas in Europe Being a Brit first, a European second Focusing on advantages and disadvantages of leaving But this means we have ignored the rest of Europe John’s experience as a correspondent in Brussels How we always stood on the edges of the EU The UK hankering after a lost world position We saw in the referendum how much support there was leaving John being ambivalent about leaving But caring about our standards of living falling Very few people researched trade agreements, laws and their benefits ‘The metropolitan elite’ People that come to London are not all posh John being an ex-Cambridge elite How John thinks everything Lisa says is true (yay!) We have a representative democracy In 2016 we allowed people to take the decisions for themselves People were lied to The divisions of our society The result being as a result of austerity and government cuts Will life get better for the people who felt marginalised? The people that in favour agree life is going to be rougher What’s next for France? The French being the mirror image opposite of us 14.33 – 14.48 edit stop for water break! The French revolution sanctifying violence French protests being entirely different to British France is not collapsing Workers rights in France being very strong John missing Paris but Paris being stuck in the 50s in many ways Will the EU weaken after we leave? John thinking it was a mistake pushing for an ever closer union The UK were the strong person of Europe We had a seat at the table Travellers in the Third Reich and how we slept walk into Nazi Germany Are we too sleepwalking into something that is more sinister? John reporting on the National Front in France What’s really next for Europe A quite uncomfortable closer relationship to the US to survive The Chinese won’t take any great interest in us Britain will drift for quite a long time

This week, John Jasmins joins Chief Neil Dubord to discuss the challenges he has been through throughout his career.   John Jasmins started with the Delta Police Department as a Reserve Constable, and has been a regular member with the department for over 13 years. He has worked in Patrol, Street Crime Unit, Uniform Gang Task Force, CFSEU, Youth Section, and Community Policing. Currently, John is assigned to the North Delta District Community Policing Office and is working on his Master of Laws Degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. His wife, Kristina, is also a police officer and is a member of the Surrey RCMP. Together they have 3 children: Dante, Brooklyn and Ari.   John has been through a number of difficult challenges over the course of his career, with the most recent challenge happening only a month ago (from the time this episode was recorded.) From two collision incidents to heart surgery to being stabbed while intervening in an altercation off-duty — John has been through many traumatic events but has also learned a lot along the way. In this episode, he shares in great detail the stories of each event, what he did to overcome them, how he recovered after each one, and what he did to get back to his normal working routine.   Key Takeaways: [:45] Chief Neil Dubord welcomes John Jasmins on to the podcast. [1:15] Chief Neil Dubord opens up this week’s podcast with an easy question for John: what did he have for breakfast? [2:19] John speaks a bit about his career and then dives into a story of what occured while he was working towards his goal of getting into the CFSEU. [6:42] What was going through John’s mind when he got into an accident on his first shift in his new position with the CFSEU? And was he getting the support he needed from management at the time? [9:20] About John’s recovery from the collision accident: how long it took for him to get back to work and the long-term impacts. [9:54] How much time did John spend with the Uniform Gang Task Force? What position in the department did he hold next? [10:10] What the Street Crime Unit does at Delta. [10:47] The second collision John was involved in — this time, with the Street Crime Unit — less than a year later. [14:42] The importance of management supporting their police officers. [15:20] Did John feel support from management with this second collision? [15:42] What could have management done to make John feel more supported during this incident? [16:14] How John’s career unfolded after this second collision incident. [16:44] Now transitioned to the Youth Section at the DPD, what sort of work was John doing? [18:30] In the fall of 2015, John fell brutally ill, leading to him needing open heart surgery. [20:29] How long was it between the time John was diagnosed and when he had the open heart surgery? How did he manage to keep on working while waiting for the surgery? [23:12] The tough choice John had to make with which kind of surgery he wanted to have on his heart. [25:52] The outcome of John’s surgery, the length of his recovery period, and what he did to stay resilient. [28:36] John begins the story of the most recent incident he was involved in. [29:38] What were John’s first concern after being stabbed? Did he know how bad it was? [32:10] Does John have any memories from the ambulance ride or the hospital? [33:43] John recounts the conversations he had before his life-saving surgery. [36:18] About John’s recovery post-surgery. [37:21] What helped John from the organization to overcome these incidents and what he did, himself, to overcome these challenges. [39:22] Chief Neil Dubord turns it over to Constable Aaron Hill, who speaks about becoming the victor in these kinds of situations; not the victim. [41:01] John shares some final pieces of wisdom about the lessons he has learned. [42:20] Chief Neil Dubord thanks John for joining him this episode!   Mentioned in this Episode: Bend Don’t Break Episode: “The Challenge of a Lifetime: Sergeant Ray Athwal’s Wait for a New Heart” Bend Don’t Break Episode: “On the Brink of Losing Your Job, Your Health, and Your Father: Constable Aaron Hill’s Lesson in Resiliency”   Looking for More Episodes? James and John discuss the Spice Girls' dual release singles; Holler and Let Love Lead The Way. Before they dig deep into both singles they discuss some Spice news - the photo circling Twitter of Victoria having an alleged anxiety ahead of the Olympics show, Emma Bunton's new album release in a few days and Youtube's 'The Honest Vocal Coach' mesmerized by the Spice Girls' vocals on a live performance of 'Too Much'. Switching focus they move on to Holler, the RnB number 1 from the new Spice Girl line-up (Baby, Scary, Posh and Sporty.) There's a lot to unpack here! James and John agree this is a much more adult Spice era and they bond over Mel C's unfortunate hair choice for this music video. Was it a choice? Or was some gay hair stylist angry with her? James only just realizes the earth, air, wind and water theme in the music video that links to Let Love Lead The Way too! Genius. Victoria Beckham becomes Windy Spice in that wind tunnel and looks fabulous doing it. James and John can't seem to agree on Let Love Lead The Way (there's a surprise), it's not a favorite of John's but James just loves it, though John is quick to point out that Emma is all over the song so that explains James' love for it. Does John not like it because it's not a backing track for a night of passion? Hmmm.

Cats-effect library lets us implement modules parameterized with an abstract effect F bounded by Sync, Async, etc capabilities, i.e. not choose a concrete effect monad until the very end of the universe. In opposite, AFAIU, John's approach is different. We still describe our algebras with F, but have to implement modules with IO (zio), which doesn't let us easily migrate to a different IO monad later with a simple replace in the Main class. Does John consider it as a weak side of zio? Or such a lib is not even needed if you use the best io impl like ZIO? ))) I know he has proposed some ideas for Cats Effect 2.0. Does he believe he'll be heard by Nedelcu & co? APOLOGIES for the wait, but you know what they say about Good Things, and this episode was definitely worth the two-and-a-half-year wait! We pity #KevinZegers & #AlexaNisenson at cons... * ...but are #TheVultures really "bad guys", when you stack them against #TheSaviors or even #RickGrimes & Co? * Clever use of film to explain John's story, while the episode's pace explains the weight of his burden * ... our gratification when Dorie finally uses his six-shooters: the culmination of efforts to pull him out of his long isolation * Naomi washing up on John's shores reads like a Greek myth * Wounds, stitches, and anesthetic: the episodic sin of our past * #MadisonClark's & John Dorie's benevolence is very similar, even in the face of terrible behavior * Does John go out of the way to be hospitable and respectful of space and privacy for reasons other than his incredible good nature? * ...because, in spite of his best efforts, he grows attached to Naomi, painfully aware she will leave * Even before saving her from the Trench #Walkers, Laura blurts out her own burden, signaling Naomi's HEAVY barrier is lifting * How can anyone sleep in the #Walkerpocalypse?! * After Saving Laura, Good Guy John just needed someone to understand him to get him to snap out of it * John Dorie's VHS movie classics reviews! * ...How "Meet John Doe" ties into Laura meeting John Dorie * Among all this episode's gifts, it unequivocally explains how surviving is not enough * Breaking down John & Laura's emotional kissing scene: His intense, almost-teenage helplessness against his love for her * Rick's last words finally resonate with Morgan, by way of John Dorie's rehashing of his love story * Morgan ain't havin it: his ability to jump John's sense of sincerity and integrity in the face of doubt * Morgan is exactly where he needs to be: No character, especially him, is a throw-away on #FearTWD * Why we were way more devastated by #NickClark's death than #CarlGrimes' (#RIPNick #RIPCarl) * Formally announcing our desire to compare the #Comicbook to the show, in light of many diversions: there's no reason not to, at this point * Bringing baggage into #TWDseason9's new world: #MaggieRhee as #Alpha, #DarylDixon as #Beta, and how #Enid fits in #Alden #TheWhisperers * ...we're enjoying the possible "the enemy within" and "Who do we root for?" ideas for #WalkingDead season 9 * #JeffreyDeanMorgan's past and how he's able to handle #AndrewLincoln's Method Acting * Carol's #TheDevilWearsPrada professional start that DOESN'T end up as making set-designer for #TWD & #FearTWD. Today we welcome back John Espey, Co-Founder and CEO of Levvel.  Levvel has started getting some much deserved press locally for the fast growth track they have burned over the last 5 years.  Last week we spent the majority of our time talking about the track of Levvel over the last 6 to 7 years as it morphed from Reward Summit and into Levvel. This week I wanted to spend some time with John exploring entrepreneurship in general and specifically in Charlotte.  He’s been with several successful companies and several that weren’t so he’s seen success and failure in Charlotte.  As such, he’s got great perspective and insight into doing things here. Stay tuned to the end as John and I discuss why Charlotte can’t seem to promote its own startup successes like Avid, Passport, DealCloud, MapAnything, Stratifyd, etc. What is necessary to grow Charlotte’s entrepreneurial community: more investors or more entrepreneurs? How do you get more entrepreneurs into Charlotte? Do we need home grown talent or do we need to import a bunch of millennials and future founders to come to Charlotte and start companies? What does John say to a younger version of himself – the 36 year old John who started Reward Summit (which eventually became Levvel)? What advice does John have for the young entrepreneur in Charlotte trying to raise capital? What does John have to say to potential Charlotte area investors who are interested in venture capital or angel investments? Charlotte doesn’t have a huge research presence yet – though UNCC is making big inroads – and we don’t have a medical university.  What does John think we have as a community to promote as great for entrepreneurs? Does John have a hard time finding talent in Charlotte given everyone says there isn’t enough talent in Charlotte? Hopefully you enjoyed our podcast interview with John today.  I thought it was a great discussion on entrepreneurship in the Charlotte area and entrepreneurship in Charlotte in general.  I thought was it was a really good two part interview.  Next week, we welcome Curtis Watkins, CEO of BovaMetrics to the podcast to talk about his company - delivering a virtual assistant to help financial advisors add value to your portfolio through use of performance harvesting. In this conversation, John walks us through many of the details involved in how he achieved this overwhelming success. The interview is full of invaluable tips and insights on various aspects of how to succeed in making money online. Find Out More About John Here: JohnChow.com@JohnChow on TwitterJohn Chow on FacebookJohn Chow on YouTube In This Episode: [01:37] - John shares his biggest aha moment, which was when he discovered that you can make money online. [05:14] - How long did it take John to go from making $0 to making $10,000 a month on his site? He answers, then walks us through the journey of his site through the dot com boom and bust. [08:55] - After Adsense came along, John had a bit of learning curve in figuring out ad placement, colors, and so on. After four to five months, he was making good money again. [09:47] - John talks about the social media boom, which was when things started taking off for him again. He explains how he got into blogging, and talks about being called out on talking about making money by blogging when his blog wasn’t making any money. [13:05] - In response to being called out, John made a case study involving monthly posts about his blog’s income. The goal was to make $3,000 a month on two hours a day. [16:18] -  John explains why other bloggers are able to post their monthly income still, even though he needed to stop due to requests from his advertisers. [17:10] - John stopped using AdSense after about a year and a half. He then explains why he decided to focus on making more money per visitor instead of getting more visitors. [19:08] - We learn more about the products that John has on his site now. [20:26] - John talks more about affiliate marketing. [21:58] - Did John create a course specifically about email marketing using AWeber, or was it more generically about email marketing? After answering, John talks about his choice not to disclose his affiliation with AWeber in his first ebook, before there were stringent guidelines on doing so. [24:34] - John gives us some sense of approximately how much of his income is from affiliate marketing versus his own products. He then discusses adding higher-price items without increasing his time per day. [26:52] - John still works around two hours a day on average. [27:35] - Is this podcast part of John’s two hours a day, or is it in addition to that time? [28:45] - John walks us through how he monetizes his videos. [30:18] - What does John recommend as a next step for someone who is using AdSense? [32:18] - John offers some insight into how to best use AdSense in terms of size, placement, and style. [35:49] - Stephan reveals that his oldest daughter made money on AdSense as a teenager. [37:21] - How often does John recommend blogging to keep up momentum? In his answer, he reveals that he believes his consistency is one of the main keys to his success. [41:28] - Does John theme his days, as recommended by Mike Vardy? Stephan then brings up the concept of having free day, buffer days, and focus days. [43:54] - John sometimes does episodes while he’s driving, he explains. He and Stephan discuss the safety of multitasking this way. [45:32] - Currently, all the traffic to John’s YouTube channel and blog is organic. [47:06] - What is John doing from an SEO standpoint? As he answers, he talks about another (somewhat inadvertent) case study he did on whether you can build a blog without Google. [49:52] - John recommends Affiliate Summit as his favorite conference. A daily devotional through the recorded words Jesus spoke while He walked alongside us. Our website http://alittlewalkwithgod.com. Thanks for joining me today for "A Little Walk with God." I'm your host Richard Agee. Did you ever wonder where Jesus and the thief on the cross went when they died that day? Jesus said they were headed to paradise that day. Well then, what is paradise anyway? Scripture Luke 23:43 Jesus: I promise you that this very day you will be with Me in paradise. Devotional Have you thought much about Jesus' comment to the thief hanging next to Him at Golgotha? Criminal Evil enough for crucifixion Cruelest form of execution Today join Jesus in paradise Paradise Wikipedia - Paradise is the term for a place of timeless harmony. The Abrahamic faiths associate paradise with the Garden of Eden, that is, the perfect state of the world prior to the fall from grace, and the perfect state that will be restored in the World to Come. in paradise there is only peace, prosperity, and happiness. Paradise is a place of contentment, a land of luxury and fulfillment. Is it heaven? Has the thief already faced judgment and entered into eternity with the triune Godhead around the throne? Does John's Revelation and other eschatological writings agree with or refute what Jesus says to the thief? Arguments by believers and non-believers alike Does everyone go here awaiting judgment or just believers? Is this like the lobby to heaven where you get the appetizers before dinner? If Jesus talks about a judgment day, then what is paradise? A place between death and heaven? Will good people, but non-believers stay here instead of hell? Is this the opposite of purgatory for those who earn a better place than the flames or eternal separation from God? No one knows this side of heaven. We do know some things. Death is not the final victor, there is something after that - Jesus talks about that There is a heaven and hell - Jesus talks about both There will be a judgment day - Jesus talks about that We determine by our faith and actions now whether we will spend eternity in heaven or hell - Jesus talks about that What is paradise? We don't really know this side of the curtain we call death. But for believers, whether we are ushered into an anteroom of heaven with Jesus awaiting the judgment that He called paradise when He talked to the thief, or whether we face judgment immediately, or whether time just stops and doesn't matter anymore once we pace from this life to the next, does it really matter? As long as we are with Him, who cares? We don't need to be concerned about what paradise is or when it is or what it looks like or if it's part of heaven or not. Who cares? Just be ready when He comes and you'll hear Him say, “this very day you will be with Me in paradise.” If you want to learn more about my church, you can find us at SAF.church. If you like the devotional, share it with someone. If you don't, tell me. I hope you'll join me again tomorrow for "A Little Walk with God."

Christian Life Community Church - online

Our new series is based on the Epistle of First John. This little letter contains all kinds of interesting and practical instruction about Jesus. It is one of my favourite New Testament books. In particular, I really enjoyed sharing the message of this letter back when I was involved in trying to witness to hippies during my high school days. It contains the wonderfully "hip" comment that "God is Love" and this in fact was the opening into many discussions with the "it's all about love; make love not war; free love" generation. John is writing his epistle in order to correct some strange thinking about the person of Jesus Christ. Some teachers were advocating that Jesus was not truly both God and man. This heresy was called Gnosticism and held that matter is evil and that God could not come in the flesh since he was wholly spirit and therefore good and would never subject himself to the evil of a human form. To them salvation was escape from the body which was not achieved by faith but by special knowledge (gnosis in Greek). This heresy led to moral evil since they believed matter was evil and not breaking God's law (1 Jn. 3:4). Breaking any moral law was of no consequence since what you were "in spirit" was the only thing that counted. Out text reveals that Jesus was a real human being and not simply an apparition or spirit. He was touched and seen by the Apostles. In fact, they examined him carefully. He was the real deal. He was one with the Father and he embodied Eternal Life. Without this fundamental understanding of Jesus, testified to by these eye, ear and hand witnesses, it would be impossible to have fellowship with the Father and to enjoy the promises of the Kingdom today. Questions for Discussion: 1. Slide 2. What do your friends think God is like? Were there views represented in the video clip? 2. Slide 5-6. Why does John delay the subject to his sentence until after the four "that which" clauses? Why the mystery? How does this strengthen his argument that Jesus is the Word? Does he expect his readers to know Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1? Imagine the shock of someone maintaining that they had touched God, literally. What does that say to the reader? 3. Slide 7-9. Why do you think the translators capitalized the "Word?" (Usually this means it is referring to the person and not simply the message). Think of John's gospel and his emphasis on Eternal Life. What scriptures come to mind? Discuss how John connects the Father, the Son and Eternal Life. 4. Slide 10-11. In what ways is the Church both the mission and the message? What difference does this make in how we perceive our work as Christ's servants in fulfilling his commission? 5. Slide 12. Why is koinonia so important to John? What part does joy play in Christian living? Does John imply that if the readers don’t get this very important understanding of the person-hood of Jesus that they would fall out of fellowship? What does that tell us, if anything, about the essence of what it means to be a Christian?
