In this episode, I’m joined by the amazing Jonathon Koch. His story has inspired me more than anything else and that’s why I’m so grateful to have him here on Bouncing Forward. Jonathon is world-renown producer and director, having worked on films like American Gangster, The peacemaker, and Fearless, and the miniseries The Kennedys. While in Washington In Koch became desperately ill and in order to save his life, doctors had to place him in a coma. A few weeks later when Koch woke up with his mind completely intact, he learned that he had survived septic shock, but his body had been severely compromised – he lost his right leg and left hand in the process. Koch spent the next 18 months rebuilding himself with several painful surgeries, multiple prosthetic fittings, and endless rehabilitation appointments. His dedication to bouncing forward far exceeded his doctors’ expectations. They recognized his mental and physical strength to successfully receive the first human hand transplant EVER. One year later, Koch made medical history by making it through successfully. The doctors said takes several years to learn how to use a new hand, but only four months later, Jonathan was already back on the tennis court. Jonathon discusses why we should be purpose oriented instead setting goals, the reason why people survive, how to change our perspective, and daily practices that helped him succeed. My favorite quote from Jonathon in this episode is, “Don’t wait for something catastrophic to happen before you live in a way that you are ready for anything.” Are you living your life this way? What we discuss: [00:04:53] What does success look like today compared to early on in John’s life [00:05:36] Setting goals = setting limits [00:07:50] Being able vs being capable [00:09:16] Jonathon's story [00:12:42] Being in induced comma [00:17:56] John’s initial reaction after waking up from comma [00:20:38] The reason why people survive [00:21:25] Did John ever victimised himself? [00:42:18] Was there one particular thing that flipped John’s perspective to help him go forward [00:44:07] Daily practices to keep John going and succeed [00:54:04] One things that helped John succeed [00:54:52] One thing about life that john to be true [00:58:23] Resilience is earned

"Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight His paths." (Matt 3:3) He cried out! He didn't speak, as if it was a passing thought like: "Oh by the way, did you know the Lord is coming?" He cried out! He cried! There was urgency! There was passion! He was risking his life to proclaim the Lord's coming. When he came out to the desert, and began to tell everyone to repent, he was on the way to his death. Why did he do it? He had no choice. Only God can give that kind of courage; and John the Baptist had known the Lord from the time he was inside his mother's womb. "When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leapt in her womb." (Luke 1:41)Did John know what kind of road they would prepare for the Lord? Did he ever, for one moment, consider it could be the Road to Calvary? God, the Father in Heaven did not reveal the whole plan to John. If He had, would John have been able to lay the groundwork for our Lord's first coming? He told everyone who would listen, to repent. Did those who were present, that joyful day, hear with their heads and act through their hearts? Did John's words find a place in their lives? When Jesus was baptized by John in the River Jordan and the Father's words descended from Heaven: "This is My beloved Son. My favor rests on Him." (Matt 3:17) was a thorn planted in their hearts? Then, why did they, three years later, place a Crown of thorns on His Head? Our Lord received word that John had been beheaded, John, His messenger and dear cousin, the one who recognized Him, while He was still in His Mother's womb. He was dead! What did Jesus do? He went away to pray. Did He grieve? Had He seen the good that John could have continued doing and was now silenced? Or did He know in His Heart of hearts that John had lived for one purpose and that was to proclaim His coming, to pave the way for Him, the Redeemer, to save the world? John's words, "He must increase while I must decrease." (John 1:30) were they coming to pass? Did Jesus grieve for the loss to the world of this great prophet? Did the Father come to Him and prepare Him for His total mission? When did Jesus begin His way of the Cross? Was it at Cana, the night His Mother turned to Him and said "They have no wine?" Was it when He performed His first miracle, changing the water into wine? Was Jesus trying to tell His Mother that if He does that, the world will begin to know Who He is, His walk will begin, and life as they have known it, will be no more? Was that really what He was saying when He answered His Mother: "Woman why turn to Me? My hour has not come yet?" (John 2:4) Was Jesus trying to buy one more night of normality before starting His Ministry and His long journey to the Cross? Did Mother Mary understand that she was asking Him to begin the journey that could only end up at Calvary? Could she have still said "Do whatever He tells you?" And now, she still is saying the same thing, really, at every apparition, basically "Do whatever He tells you."Related ItemsSupport the show (https://bobandpennylord.store/pages/we-need-your-help)

Text: Psalm 27:1 Series: Glad Bethlehem's Living Light Second Sunday of Advent: PEACE In a “normal” Christmas season, among the various special services our church would be offering would be a children’s musical program of some sort. Since our Children’s Choirs haven’t been able to meet since this past March, there’s no way we could put anything together this year, though we are planning a “family friendly” service in the afternoon on Christmas Eve, in which several of our children will be providing the worship leadership. I’m glad that we’ve figured out a way to involve the children because of how they help us to see the significance of Christmas in ways we might otherwise miss. For example, there’s the story of the children’s Christmas program at another church, where the children were given lines that were to speak at the appropriate time. If you’ve ever worked with children in such a special program or you can remember what it was like when you were a child in such a special program, then you can identify with the situation in which a young boy had been positioned on the front row of the risers and was tasked with the responsibility of speaking those words of Jesus when he said: “I am the light of the world!” But when the time came for the little boy to say his part, he forgot his line. You can picture the scene. His mother is in the front row of the audience, whispering his line to him: “I am the light of the world,” though her son couldn’t make out what she was trying to tell him. She whispered a second time. Then she repeated it a third time. And that’s when the little boy straightened up to speak out loudly and confidently: “My mother is the light of the world!” What I find inspiring about that story is how when faced with a dilemma that in his little mind he knew he couldn’t solve by himself, he personalized the solution. He leaned into the love he knew had always been there for him at such moments. He rested his racing heart with the one source of encouragement and support that had never let him down and wouldn’t let him down at such an anxious time as this. With confidence and even boldness, he may not have gotten the line right, but he certainly got it in a way that seemed in that moment to make the most sense to him: “My mother is the light of the world!” We can forgive a child for in his hour of distress leaning upon that love which had been with him from the start. But as that child grows up, as each one of us must do, the question becomes, ‘Will we lean upon that love that is the source of all earthly loves? Will we cast our hopes on the steadfast and everlasting love of our Creator God, who loved this entire world so much that He gave His Only Begotten Son to be for this world light and life?” The text before us this morning from the 27th Psalm points us in the direction of the confidence that comes to those who in their hour of need lean upon God as the source of their every refuge and help. “The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?” Tradition tells us that David was the author of this psalm and there is no good reason to doubt that claim. You read the stories about David in the Old Testament and you see where trials and tribulations seemed to follow him all of his days. The larger context of the 27th Psalm appears to suggest some kind of military threat David had been facing, a threat that caused him to question his future and to be uncertain about whether he would be able to survive. And in his hour of need, when he did not know if tomorrow would come, David leaned upon the one love that had been with him as a young boy when he faced the Philistine giant Goliath and with boldness and confidence he lifted his heart to the One who had been from that moment on the source of his strength. “The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?” In the midst of his trouble David placed his trust in God, and as soon as he did, his fear and his anxiety were replaced with an overwhelming sense of peace. Perhaps this morning you have come to this place with a heaviness in your heart over some uncertainty that’s been able to get the best of you. In a “normal” time you might have been able to leverage some assets at your disposal to at least manage the threat, but this time is anything but normal and so you face those challenges with a deep sense of “unease.” You’re not sure if in your own power you’ll be able to overcome it. But the good news of this season is that regardless of the darkness that may have come upon us, our God is able to dispel it with the light of His presence and the power of His salvation. Through the gift of His Son, Jesus the Christ, God has drawn near to us in our time of need to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves and to strengthen us and to direct us and to heal us and to save us. All that is required of us is to personalize our devotion, as did the Psalmist, and confess with every fiber of our being that the LORD is “my” light and “my salvation,” and that the LORD is “my” stronghold. Only then will be able to face the darkness with full confidence and resolve. One of the great stories in the New Testament is the story of Nicodemus, a man of the Pharisees and a member of the Jewish ruling council. As the Gospel of John tells us, Nicodemus came to Jesus “by night.” Did John drop that detail into the story because of Nicodemus’ embarrassment over going to an untrained rabbi like Jesus to gain some clarity on his eternity or was John being symbolic, given how light overcoming darkness is a signal theme in his Jesus story. The answer is “probably both.” But what we know for sure is that Nicodemus had no real peace about his salvation. He had a lot of religion, but he had no relationship. He knew about God, but he didn’t really know God. So, when Jesus began to explain to Nicodemus the importance of being “born from above,” it all went over Nicodemus’ head, until finally Jesus spoke to him in words that a Pharisee like Nicodemus, steeped in the Law of Moses, could understand: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” Knowing about Jesus is not enough; we must know Jesus as our light and our salvation before we can experience his peace, even his peace that passes all understanding. Do you know that source of light? Have you embraced Jesus as the only means to your salvation? Once you do, your life will never again be the same. You could ask Gary Adams, an Asheville, North Carolina man who at one point in his life didn’t have much need for God because he thought that he could face life’s challenges on his own. It wasn’t that he was opposed to the notion of God. He had attended Sunday School as a child and so he knew the basics about God. But as he reached adulthood, he just didn’t see the need for God. God was, as he put it, “irrelevant” to his life. One day Gary went “caving” with two other friends in North Carolina’s Nantahala Gorge. One of them had heard of a waterfall hidden deep in one of the caves, and Gary and his friends were determined to find it. But while climbing a rope ladder in one of the caves, Gary lost his footing and fell fifty feet to the floor of the cave. When he came to, he didn’t quite know where he was. He was enveloped in darkness. And even worse, he didn’t know who he was. He was completely confused. But as Gary Adams lay there in the cave praying, he knew without a doubt that God was with him. And so he prayed, “Lord, let me live long enough to find out who I am and what my life is about.” And he said that from that moment on, a great peace covered him so that he suddenly felt “whole and complete.” His two friends had rushed to call the paramedics and when they arrived, one of them called his name, and suddenly Gary’s memory returned completely. But the Gary Adams who emerged from that dark cave was not the same Gary Adams who had gone in. He was now someone who belonged completely to God. He was now someone who didn’t just know about God; he knew God. He was now someone for whom the Lord was his light and his salvation, a stronghold to support him in his hour of darkness. And that same God, who came into this world in the person of Jesus the Christ, can be the same for you. Whether your darkness is physical or emotional or financial or even spiritual, lift to Him your heart and your soul and say to everyone who will listen: “The LORD is my light and my salvation. The LORD is my stronghold. I have nothing to fear.” Psalm 27:1

(17:25) WHEN DOES IT AIR...March 02, 2020EPISODE TRANSCRIPT...Beth:Welcome to ‘You’re Not the Boss of Me’. If you are determined to break glass ceilings and build it your way, this show is for you. I’m your host Beth Graves, and I am obsessed with helping you to not just dream it, but make the plan, connect the dots and create what you crave. Are you ready? Let’s get started.Everybody I talk to is negative. Nobody's working for my team. I don't know how so and so recruited. She must have had it. Big warm market. My family is laughing at me. I can't recruit. I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know what to say. I'm getting crickets. Nobody's open to this opportunity. Stop and pause. Did you hear all that negativity in my voice? Did you hear all of that? Disbelief and what I was sharing. Did your vibration just kind of drop to the floor? Words are the most powerful thing that you have while you're thinking about the idea of recruiting and sharing. So, we're going to start there. I am going to tell you exactly some shifts that you need to make and then I'm going to end with a strategy that I have used over and over and over again to recruit over a thousand people into the network marketing business that I'm in and to help others to do the same. And you don't have to be an influencer, you don't have to have a podcast. You can be, as I was, I share this all the time. A regular everyday person. I had an AOL account; I had a couple of hundred friends on Facebook. I didn't understand the online space, but I was willing to present. I was willing ask the question. So hearing from somebody that's like on a podcast, Oh, all these accolades, I want you to go back with me to 2014 I want you to go back to the person that said, okay, I'm going to trust this business model. I'm going to trust that this is the way that I can break the glass ceiling that I had if I was going to head back to work, to be a teacher. And so first of all, I had to have that belief. So, let's talk about all that negativity.  You heard my voice; I hear it all the time. And if you're a leader or maybe it comes out of your mouth, I can tell you that the person that's saying those things, people are feeling that vibration. People are feeling that negativity. So of course, they're not answering you. Of course, they don't want to talk to you about the business. You don't even believe that it works yourself. So, the first thing I want to tell you is let's shift those words. All right? So, when you hear recruit and grow rich, I want you to have affirmations around your business. I want you to throw away those words that aren't working for you. This is a little thing that I want to share with you is that sound vibration travels through water four times faster than it goes through open air. Considering that your body is 70% water, you'll understand how quickly the vibration from negative words actually resonates with your cells. You guys, it's science, right? I love that little science. So, I read this in an article. I think it's a Goop article, but it was like so incredible to think about the power of the words that we're using. And as I was doing this recruit and grow rich content, I started to think, yes, I can give you all kinds of strategies, but if we don't start with the vibration being high, if we don't start with having affirmations and vision and a positive mindset around the success of our ability to recruit and bring people into the business, and also the belief that that person will have success as a business partner with you, then yeah, might as well hang it up. So, let's start there. And if you haven't listened to my episodes or you're not over in Camp Elevate, it takes a lot of work, you guys to keep that vibration high. It takes working on the mindset daily. Having those affirmations around your business, having affirmations. I have them all over the place because the words create my reality. So, if I'm constantly saying, Oh, gosh, nobody's answering my messages. Nobody wants to do the business. I don't even know why I bother. Guess what's going to happen? Nothing. So, I want you to shift your words. I want you to get rid of those. Throw away words that say, nobody's going to join me. Everybody's crickets. Nobody wants to do this. I want you to create affirmations around how many people or waiting for your message, how many people were like I was in 2014 who is desperate, desperate for a change, desperate for a business that could help us to pay off the debt. And do you think Blair Critch on the day that she sent me a message was like, Oh, this is never going to work. She's never going to answer me. Uh, I don't know why I bother. I don't what to say. Is this spam? Oh, my goodness. No. She had total belief that she was sharing something with me that could change my life. I felt it. And she was just getting started. She borrowed the belief from our other friend that was already having success and she believed in the industry and her words were simple. Her words, we're so simple that I was curious, and I was interested, and I was excited, and it never crossed my mind that she didn't believe it would work. So, if she had sent like, I don't know, Beth, I don't know about this thing, but I actually like the products, but you know, I don't really know. It could be one of those things, but let's just take a look at, and I'm not so sure. No, she was like, listen, I'm all in. This company looks to be incredible and I'm having the best experience with these products. I want you to be a partner with me in this. Let's do this. It could be a great adventure with something like that. I was like, Oh, okay. So, I'm not telling you those are the exact words, but Blair's energy and her vibration and her belief was there. And so, I'm going to say to you, I want you to start with how do you view your business? Do you have gratitude around it? Do you have those five reasons that we talked about? Wait, this is the most insanely amazing thing for someone to become a partner with you. So before I do those reach outs and before I have conversations and before I start talking to people about being a business partner, the very first thing I do is make sure that I have my belief in line, make sure that I have my vibration high, make sure that I have that vision. I mean I visualize people saying yes to me. I visualize people having success. I visualize their life changing and so that vibration, it's high. It's like you have that friend. I know you do. I have that friend and she's like, come on, we're headed out. We're going to it to be so much fun. My friend's name is Heather and she's like, where to play? Ping pong. It's going to be a blast. Everybody's there instead of like, Oh, my gosh, like let's get dressed. It's so cold outside. Let's not go. I'm going to read you a quote. It's Gary John Bishop. Yeah. Has the book an F yourself, and this quote says, retrain your brain one word at a time. We can determine our emotions by steering our thoughts. We can shape those thoughts by being conscious and diligent about our words and the kind of language we engage in. So if you're engaging in any negativity around your business, around your conversations, around what is happening, that's the first step. So, switch it. Figure out a way to have those affirmations. Have a vision for what you're doing with the company. If you need help with this, join me over in camp elevate. We talk about it all of the time, or send me a DM and say, I don't even know what you're talking about so that I can guide you to a training on it. Okay? There's many penny podcasts. If you go back and listen about those routines, now let's talk about a recruiting roadmap. There are 10,000 people out there telling you 10 ways that you could make six to seven figures in your business if you follow this exact action plan. So, my friend Daniel Pope is a brilliant marketer. Brilliant. He's brilliant. And I said to him, everybody out there like I'm doing a challenge coming up and I'll tell you how to get on that challenge list.  I'm doing a challenge March 14th it's absolutely free and I'm going to give you five days of, I don't even know if it's called a recruiting roadmap because that sounds so like everybody has one. But my challenge is making money your way and it's feeling aligned with how you recruit. You're recruiting plan an actual way that you're going to create an event to share your opportunity. But we're also going to go way into the mindset. So today I'm going to give you a strategy. You're going to walk away with something that you can do today that you feel excited about, aligned with, and have a conversation with somebody that is your Beth from 2014 we're going to talk about that. But I want to talk about what Daniel Pope said and Hey, Hey Daniel, if you're listening, and I said to him, it's like Daniel, everybody out there is sharing a roadmap, a bootcamp. Everybody's saying, here's the way to earn six and seven figures. If you follow this exact social media blueprint or you follow this exact plan, and he said, Beth, it's like chicken pot pie and I want you to think of your business-like chicken pot pie. If you go to all recipes and you look up chicken pot pie, there's like but 272 that you're going to come across and there's different pictures and there's different ways that you can make the chicken pot pie the way that you recruit. It might have the exact same steps as me, but your recipe will always be different because your ingredients, everything that's making up your chicken pot pie. Is this making sense to you? When Daniel said it, it sounded way more brilliant. I'm going to have to interview him on the podcast about this. But when he said that to me and I was talking about this challenge I'm putting together and I said, I want it to be different. I want my listeners of the podcast and my followers that want a really good free training. I want them to come in and I want them to really feel confident, aligned, excited, not feel that icky and be excited to reach out to someone and say, okay, Hey, take a look at this. Here's what I want to show you. It's like show and tell in kindergarten. And he said, Beth, yeah, of course a lot of people like the buzzword’s you guys recruit and grow rich recruiting roadmap, the six and seven figure way to recruit hundreds and three to five new customers a day. Right? And he said that the way that it's delivered, the way that it's received, the spices that you put in yours, everybody has a little bit of a different shift. So that's what I'm sharing with you today is my recipe for chicken pot pie. But I want you to remember that there are certain elements of recruiting that have to happen along the way. I think for you to have success, and the very first one is that mindset. Is that okay? The mindset, the affirmations around, I am going to have a conversation with someone, and they are going to be blown away by what I'm sharing with them. I cannot wait to hear the difference. Oh my gosh, this week is going to be such a successful week. I cannot wait to connect with so many women that are ready and looking for a way for financial freedom, without having to sit in their cubicle. I can't wait to connect and share this incredible, incredible opportunity to hear the difference. Oh my gosh. I feel like tomorrow my inbox is going to be flooded with women that are asking me about how they can make an extra $200 to $500 a month, diversify their income and do it online and be a part of an amazing community. I can't wait. So, when I put that out there, did you guys feel the difference between why are there crickets in my inbox? Right? So that belief, so we obviously have to have a list. Everybody has to have a list. If you're going to recruit, you have to have a list being who is it out there that you have on your list, on your phone, on your social media, in your community. I don't care where it is that would be aligned with building a business with you that's looking for what you have. So, first of all, you've got to determine where is that list coming from? No, I hope that if you follow me at all, you know that I am consistently saying five, four, three, two, one, add two to your list today. Where does your Emily, that's my avatar. Where does she hang out? So, first of all, what is the pain, the frustration, the benefit of recruiting to your opportunity, going to give to someone. Do you know that that is first you cannot recruit? If you do not know that answer, what do you solve? Why would someone want to join you in the business? Well, for me, I absolutely positively wanted no glass ceiling. I wanted unlimited income potential. I want it to be able to have a flexible place to work. I wanted a first to market product. I wanted mentoring and leadership that was top, top, top in the industry. I had all these, these things. What are the things that you have? What are the things that you offer? What are the benefits of your opportunity? Because it is a crowded market out there. So, I want you to know what are the benefits of your opportunity, and just know that you don't have to explain it all to your prospect, but you've got to be able to know these things. Because if you were explaining to me why I should go to this new restaurant, because they have the very best cauliflower tacos, you are excited. I don't need to know what ingredients are in the cauliflower tacos cause I'm not a foodie, but I love cauliflower tacos and I am like, and they have skinny margaritas. I am so there. What night are we going Jessie? Think about that. So when you have decided that you have something that people are going to be waiting for you, they're like waiting for you to reach out and we know what paid and frustration we solve, then it's time to take some action. And I know that we have all kinds of things that say, Oh, never reach out. If you put the best content out there, they're going to come to you. Well, we can be strategic in our content and we can be strategic in that strategy. And we can put a lot of things in our stories that connect all of the dots. And very often when we're consistent and connecting those dots, we do have people that say, what is it that you do? But if you want to go to seven figures, I've got news for you. You cannot passively sit back and wait. Even if you have the best opt in and lead magnet and you've got people that are showing up every day saying, I want what she has. You still have to have a conversation. You still have to have an invite. So, let's back up a little bit. We've got that list. We've grown that list. We're connecting with people. Let's say that I have, I've connected with people in my Peloton group and I'm not saying go into these groups and recruit. I'm saying these are friends that you've connected with. I'm going to give you an example of a new connection. And how that works is I'm really learning about intermittent fasting for my health. Of course, weight loss is a great benefit, but for my health, I've read about regenerating cells when you go without food and I'm learning. So, I'm in some intermittent fasting groups and I'm genuinely sharing information. I'm genuinely cheering for people. I'm genuinely sharing because it's a group that I'm interested in. So I made a few connections with people that were giving me advice and I shot them a friend request adding two to my list and went over, you know, did some commenting and posting over on their wall to get to know them as you would a new friend, just like you meeting a new friend in real life. So now we've got, you know, we've added to the list, right? So you're thinking about, okay, I'm putting all this great social media out. I've got these curiosity posts, I've, I've got things in my stories and my new friends aren't asking me. This is what they said works in attraction marketing, right? If you put it out there, people will show up in your inbox. I am all about curiosity. I am all about sharing with people genuine content that aligns, but I am also about, you've got to take some action. If you don't take some action and you just wish that people show up, you will have a very, very slow build, a very slow build. So every single week, this is one of the big strategies that I used in still use in recruiting and every single week I create some sort of an event that I'm going to invite to that's going to inform and the purpose of this event is to get information about my specific opportunity. There's a lot of different ways that we can get connected with people in different challenges, but this, every single week I have specific action toward an event. Do you hear that specific action toward an event? I've done all the affirmations, I've done all the visualization, I know exactly what it is that we have. I've got groups that I can add to that are corporate wide or team wide. But if you are going to recruit, and I don't know if you guys heard my vending machine analogy, I might've shared it last week and I heard this in… who shared this. Somebody that was in Rob's group shared that network marketing is like having a vending machine and having a lot of them, right? You can like sell one big house as a realtor and make a really great commission, but once that house is sold, you've got to find another house to sell with the network marketing model and the distribution model, it's like owning different Coke machines and they're all over the place. So I might have 5,000 Coke machines and although I made a bigger commission on selling one big house, having these Coke machines, which would be represent the business builders, your business partners, your promoters, your distributors, means that you have touched the market in all of the different places. And so, my goal when I visualize that, visualize it and people, and I have a U S actually a world map and I visualize people that are joining me in all different places to build a global team. Then I have to get to work. So, I've done all the posting, you know, I've got all the interaction going on, I've got things in my stories. I'm educating on what a great business model. I even have a robot that was cleaning floors at Walmart and I'm talking about why we have to look to build in the online space. But if I want to build, and I'm saying I, if you want to build and you want to build quickly, you have got to actually reach out to people and ask and you don't have to be like, Hey would you be open? And if that doesn't feel right to you. But through my connection, through the interactions that I'm having and listening to my friends all over the place, so when I make new connections and new friends, I am making sure that at least at least once a day I am asking someone to take a look and I know that sounds scary and I know that you might want to shut down this podcast and say, I thought she was all about building an aligned business. I am you guys. I would never have had people like Jen or people like John or people like Jody or Nancy or Julie if I hadn't had the guts to just say, John, I'd love for you to take a look. I've got this event. It's 15 minutes long and I would love for you to just hop on in, listen, see if you've got questions, see if you're aligned with it. Okay? It's going to give you the information about why our company, why the network marketing model and why it might apply to you. Would you hop on in and I know that you're like, okay, what did she just say? What did she just say? That was my conversation with John, so John was a customer and I had gotten to know John and I knew that he had a goal of buying their first house or not their first house, but buying a house, getting out of a rental situation, paying off some debt, and that's also knowing your customer funnel. You can, your best people are waiting in your customer space. Did John feel like was like invading him? Was he like, Oh my gosh, I can't believe she asked me about the business opportunity? No. If I would've been like, Oh, I had to reach out to John. I don't know. He's going to think I'm spammy and weird. You know he is an attorney. No, I was like, everybody needs to diversify their income. The network marketing model is insanely brilliant, and you would be awesome at this. John, will you take a look? Do you hear the difference? Even that first invitation wasn't as good as that second one. Will you take a look and I have an incredible event going on? See I always have something to invite them to, to give them information. I find that if I'm inviting them to come in and take a look, and usually what I do, and this is my strategy is I'm Facebook, you can't go live and maybe you can with [inaudible] one stream live, but I haven't had success with it inside of an event. So, I put together a pop up group meeting, a pop-up group that I call an event. This is where I'm going to be adding people for my short-term event, so once a week. So, if my event takes place on Wednesday at nine o'clock and that's what, what's going to happen, I am going to say Wednesday at nine can you be their life? And this is the key you guys is I know we talk about automation, but it's the personalization. Once they say yes to the invite. So if my goal is to have at least at least if you're going for six and seven figures, you've made all these connections, at least five conversations a week, I am going to have to invite like 10 and when I send that invite for somebody to take a look, it feels really, really good because I know the benefit if they are going to receive, but I am not out there recruiting other network marketers let are like posting about their thing and being weird after a friend request the vision, the alignment, all of that that we come across. You will know when it's the right time and you will also have, if you use all of my strategies of great social media branding, giving out valuable, valuable content week after week after week, then you will have people asking you, you will have many people asking you and then you also have this event. So, once a week I get together. If you have leaders, you can do it with leaders, you can create your own. And I literally put together a quick event that takes place inside of a Facebook group and it's literally a 10 to 12-minute thing. And so, people's attention span I think is about six minutes. So inside of my event that I've invited John to, I have partnered with two or three or four other people that have different stories in the industry and we go live in this event on Wednesday nights. Now if somebody can't make it live, then we use one stream live and we drop it in. But we alternate. So, this week this is what we did, and it really, really worked. And I actually recruited three people from this actual method and I you're like, Oh, I thought this was something new. Imagine the consistency of every single week. So inside of the group I had five different people sharing and we talked about the big benefits of our personal company and the big benefits of the industry. And then the personal story behind we had and almost empty nest mom, a corporate America guy that has that. His son's in college. That was John. And we had two moms, Kristin and Sarah, yeah. That are working full time, making six figures while working this business part-time. And then we had Claire, who actually has come back to the company after she had made $1 million with our company, went out and found that she didn't find the right fit and recently had come back. And that was a powerful story. The purpose of this podcast isn't to tell you how great we're doing, but it's to give you a specific example. So, what was happening, and this is where the duplication comes in, is if your entire team has a blitz, okay, hear me out here about an invite, then everybody's into action. So, I know to build a multiple seven figure business, I not only need to recruit, but my team needs to recruit. So, I've got the affirmations, I've got the visualization, I've got the event set, and I help my team with the verbiage of how to invite to the event. So, I will say, let's pick a number. All right, and I want you to personally pick this number. And remember last week when we talked about atomic habits, we talked about writing something down and the time and the place that it will happen. You have a 91% greater chance that it will happen, so let's apply that atomic habit to what we're doing with our teams. If you have a team of three, great. If you have a team of 45 great. If you have a team of 4,000 great, this still works, and this may not be a new strategy for you. This may be something you've heard, but are you consistently doing this every single week? Are you consistently showing up every single week to follow these steps? This is how you become a master recruiter. You consistently show up on social media with the right marketing, with the right content, you consistently pour value. You consistently make those connections. You consistently do all of those things that we talk about for great marketing, but this is the bread and butter. This is the way that you actually pull those people that you've been pulling, right? Pulling and saying, Hey, we've got this event this week. I know you've been curious, or I know we've chatted about this in the past. You make a decision; you write it down this week I will invite five people into our business builder promoter distributor opportunity event on Wednesday at 9:00 PM. I will invite them during a blitz on Monday at noon. I will follow up with them again on Monday at six and I will send a reminder for the event at eight 30 on Wednesday. Does that sound like a lot of work? It is, but it's a lot of work to keep working at your job because you're not making a multiple six or seven figure income because you didn't do the due for the recruiting, so I'm just going to be honest. There's a lot of people out there that are saying, Oh, you just posted. People come and you have this…It's really great. If you talk to any person that's made seven figures in the industry, I'm going to tell you they had a consistent plan for how to show the business and I find that if you show the business in a very systematic, very shark oriented, detailed way that most people will fall off. They want to hear the stories, they want to hear the benefits, and the next step after that is if somebody is, has that shark personality and wants those details, the next step after that is to go do that. So, here's your strategy for the week. I mean we've talked about for this, and like I said, this is helped our team to recruit thousands. This has helped me to consistently recruit week after week after week after week. I set that intention with my affirmations, with my visualization. I write down what it is that I'm going to do. I make that promise to myself, like we said with Atomic Habits. Then I schedule a Zoom. This is the important piece. I schedule a zoom with my team and if you don't have a team schedule with some sidelines or invite your one person on your team, I have to set up the event, the events easy to set up, and I could talk about this all over in camp if you're in the group, but the event gets set up, we plan it, we set up the group, we I'll talk about what the content will be and we say it's five minutes each. So, the whole event itself could be a total of 20 minutes. If you have four people sharing, the first-person welcomes talks about the benefits of, you know I might talk about the benefit of diversifying income, right? Residual income and I might say a few things about the personal comp plan and then I'm going to share my personal story and what made me decide and then I'm going to say, hold on. Coming up next, I'm a, I'm a sign off from this live and I do it this way on purpose. I don't go into a Zoom where we're all sharing because it gets too long. I want to have snippets. So, five minutes, five minutes, five minutes, and this is just one strategy. There's many the five minutes, five minutes, five minutes, and you can automate those videos. But I really, really know that the live touch during that life. Okay, so we've got, we're talking about setting it up. I'm going to go back to the Monday. So, Monday at six o'clock, let's say every week on Monday. And this is consistency of showing up for your team. If you have layered leadership, you guys, I'm not always running this Zoom, but I'm always doing my inviting. So, you get on and you say, okay, let's all make a commitment. How many are you inviting? Let's invite tonight. What verbiage would sound great? Okay, great. Let's give it a go. And while we're on the zoom, we're braver together, right? Remember, girls don't go to the bathroom. Like when you're in high school, you bring somebody with you because you're braver together. All right, so we've done that Zoom. Here's the thing is if you can get one or two people into action or a hundred or 200 people into action and they're doing the invites, you have got momentum on your team. The reason why people stop and they're not growing is because they're not having conversations and they're not having conversations because they don't know what to say and they don't know what to say because nobody's giving them a cool event to invite their friends to. Like if I had to call my friend Sarah and I wanted her to play tennis, but I didn't know where we were playing tennis or when or what the date was. And I was just like, Hey, tennis. But if I knew I had a invitational that had food and mimosas and it was going to be a competition and it was going to have our favorite pro rubber, I'd do like, it's on the seventh we're going to meet at 10 it's going to be awesome. Are you in, can I count on you? Yes. So different. So, when you get your teams on board with a little blitz each week to invite to the event, more people have action. And if you do it on a Zoom and you have different ideas and you're sharing verbiage and you're all like being super brave and you're making a commitment, right? People are in action. An action creates results. And start that zoom with the visualization. Start that zoom with some positive affirmations. Show your team how to show up in a positive way and say, you know what, you guys, somebody is waiting for your message tonight and I can't wait to find out who someone's life is going to change because you're introducing them to your business. I can't wait. Yeah, people excited and together squash that negativity. So, notice how this is now duplicatable. So, we're inviting to that Wednesday event. They say, yes. Awesome. So as soon as someone says yes, they've put up their hand and then the conversation starts like, Hey, I'm curious, like what do you do now for work? Have you ever done another online affiliate network marketing business, getting the details, staying in touch? Because if someone says they're showing up, that's a hot lead for the week, right? Even if they don't answer, then I'll do a reminder. So, if I've promised myself to reach out to 10 people and have conversations and one person says she's showing up, that's awesome. Two is even better. Three home rent, right? So, what happens, this is the differences. A lot of people have events, a lot of people have zooms. The consistency of how you respond to that invitation is key. And like I said, this is the difference between making sometimes money like grocery money and making life changing money is how you handle that live event. So, let's say that I've invited Sarah and she said, yes. Hey Sarah, it's we're getting ready to get started. I'll see you over in the event and I will actually tag you as well. So, during the event, I'm very active. So if it's me that's going live, I'm asking someone to tag if I'm live, I'm asking somebody else to tag the people below and to say like, Hey, Beth is life at this life and your team is on and you're like creating energy and you're making comments and you're tagging and people are seeing the excitement. All right, so the live event happens. The next is find out if they were on live, reach out and say, Hey, what did you think? The replays will be up in the group. They're going to stay up in the group for 24 hours. Can you watch those tomorrow? Cause I'd love to have a conversation with you after you have watched the videos. If they've watched them, tell me what, what are your thoughts? And then ask for the close. Just say, is there any more information that I can provide for you? Tell me what's on your mind. Isn't this incredible? And pause. Three-way chats can come up once they've had the exposure. Then you've got to see if they need any more information, any more education, any more validation before they're ready to make a decision. So, you've had them look and then the follow-up is, Oh, my gosh, wasn't John's video? Incredible. I just love him. What are your thoughts? What are your thoughts? And quickly then I love to say, you know what? Usually I will say, I've got a special tonight for my own personal special for new promoters. Here's how this is going to work and I'm getting started tomorrow with an incredible group to be running for these bonuses. Can I count on you? Conversations, connections, get some validation. So, what just happened here is we created a vision. We created our vibration. We creative positivity around this idea that people need what we have. People are looking to diversify income. There is a robot cleaning the freakin’ floors in Walmart. You guys, people need to know about the network marketing industry. We also have an agreement that we can't just post and pray even if it's incredible content. Even if I've written a book, even if I'm in my stories and even if I'm being interviewed in 15 Facebook groups, I still have to, if I want to go next level, I don't know many people, they may say it, but I'm telling you guys, many people that don't recruit without having an intentional ask and when you're putting out value and when you're showing up as an extraordinary human and your putting out that vibration, nobody is going to roll their eyes and say, why? How dare she asked me what if Oprah asked me to join a network marketing business? What if it wasn't for me? Would I be like, Oh, Oprah, you're terrible. I can't believe you asked me that. I'd be like, wow, Oprah, she's so cool. Cut all this stuff. She does look at all that like love her Super Soul Sunday. That was such a compliment. Thanks Oprah. Like think about that. Think about that. So, then we talked about having an actual event where we're giving the information that is a new opportunity, live event inside of a Facebook group. We talked about having a blitz with your team, where you start with giving them belief, giving them vision and sharing ideas. We talked about the atomic habit of writing down, how many on this day, when, how writing it down, making that commitment. And then we went ahead and talked about what happens during that launch. So, during that I keep it a launch. You guys, what happens during that event? Cause we also do live launch events for launching new distributors and promoters. And we'll talk about that. Maybe we'll talk about that next week. So, this was a mouthful, but I want you to imagine this. I want you to close your eyes for a second. If you're not driving, I want you to imagine every single week having the opportunity to have an invite to show someone what you know, to show someone a way that they can create options for their family. Do you see that person? Do you see that dad? Do you see that mom working two jobs? Do you see the stress at night? They are tossing and turning and thinking about debt. Do you see somebody that's lonely? Do you see somebody that absolutely positively is missing community? It's personal development. They need a circle that perhaps gratitude and new practices of journaling could save a marriage. Perhaps paying off debt could save someone from so much stress that they become ill. what if you have the answer for that person that can't sleep tonight? What if you do? You may miss. You may ask the wrong person. Let's not really the wrong person. You may ask somebody that's not ready, but I ask you this. If you create a system of duplication, if you create an event, do it. Do it for one week. What if he showed up every week? What if you spent this whole activity that we're talking about you guys between the blitz? Even if you run the blitz and you're in the event, it's literally one hour of your time, one hour of your time each week in the most important activity asking, you've got asked for what you want. You have marketing, you have visibility, you have ways that people are attracted to you. You're pulling them to you. You're connecting. But the difference between even a six figure and a seven-figure earner is asking for what you want. Pick up the phone invite, but when you have a blitz event, you teach your team to do the same thing and when you have a live event, they get to see the passion. They get to see the team rallying together. They get to see the excitement. Our event last night you guys, people were excited. They saw the love, they felt like, Hey, I want to take a look at this. I can tell you because I was able to look at the numbers of the people that participated in the event. I was able to look at how many people came into the business and then the fun begins. So, I asked you this, are you willing to take the time each week to grow that business? Are you willing to spend time in the absolute best income producing activity? If the answer is yes, I encourage you to give it a go. Give it a shot. We're going to be talking about this and many other ways to have a recruiting roadmap. I'm going to do a free challenge. It's going to take place on March 14th I don't know that I even have the signup ready yet, so what I want you to do, if you want to get into this free challenge and actually work through this and there's a few other details that are really important that I didn't share with you that I need to be live, go ahead and send me a DM on Instagram or Facebook messenger. Next week I'll have the funnel setup where you can actually get on the list for it, but since we're talking about a recruiting challenge and roadmap, we're going to work through this. So, I am going to give you in that free challenge, I'm actually going to give you different options that are like this and then a super-secret about how to actually close more. Part 2: Can I Trust the Bible as Relevant to the Church Today? No one reads all of the Bible literally. We all make choices about what to not take out of its original contexts. Proverbs 13:24; 1 Peter 3:3; Numbers 5:14-16 The parts that we read differently - more or less literal - than others should be areas we discuss and allow the Bible to open the door to greater relationship with Jesus Christ and others. Those discussions and interpretations became the Midrash to the Jewish people and continue to evolve with time. The point of the Bible is not to give us all the laws but to open the door to the salvation of the WORD of God, Jesus Christ. The Bible includes less ‘laws’ to make life perfect and get us to Heaven and more invitations to understand God, God’s Love, and grow in our image of God. This helps us mature in God’s love. How do we read the Bible? We ask 3 Questions when trying to understand the Bible. Question #1 - What did this passage mean to the first people who heard it? To understand what the Bible literally means we must know what it literally meant to the first people who heard it. Did John 1:1-29 mean more to 1st century Christians than Jesus Christ was God who became one of us, loved us, and died to take away our sins so we could be part of his family? YES! Through John 1 Christians followed Jesus Christ into physically loving the good creation, creatures, and people He created. He was now one with them all. Question 2: What does it still mean to the Church today? I believe the more the Church asks Question #1 the more fascinating and relevant the Bible and the Living Body of Christ becomes to the world in 2020. Let’s review from 1/19/2020… Part 1: ...As the WORD of God? What does the Bible say about Jesus Christ? The Bible identifies Jesus Christ as the WORD of God that was in the beginning, God with us in the water of our lives, and the crucified, resurrected redeemer of all creation. (John 1:1, 1:14; Genesis 1:26-27; Acts 6:7; Hebrews 4:12-13; Revelation 19:13). What does Scripture say about itself? Scripture and Creation can be trusted to connect us to the WORD and to our neighbor. (Psalm 1:2-3, Psalm 19:1-4, Romans 1:20, 2 Timothy 3:15-17, Matthew 7:12, Matthew 22:37-40) In reading Scripture, we keep our eyes on the message and our relationship with the WORD. Do not get distracted with the facts and details. They are important but not the priority. (Hebrews 12:1-2) Jesus Christ uses the Bible to knock at the door of your heart and through the Bible wants to come in and camp out with you! (Revelation 3:20)

During this 183rd episode of “Marketing Today,” host Alan Hart interviews John Harrobin, chief marketing officer at Audible. Audible is an Amazon company, founded in the late 1990s out of an oral storytelling tradition. They began as an audiobook medium and have expanded to be a subscription service, including original programming, access to newspapers and magazines, and free short-form content. Harrobin’s previous experience includes chief marketing officer at Verizon and working with NBC Universal. On the show today, Harrobin discusses the audio content market, how his professional background led him to marketing, mentorship, the future of his industry, and the future of marketing in general. He also discusses the importance of diversity in marketing departments and on boards. Harrobin views marketing as being “right in the center of the action. What I really love is driving growth and launching products. That’s where you really get immediate gratification in the form of metrics and customer feedback. Is what you are doing working now? If not, you know how to adjust.” What sets Audible apart? “Our goal, in many cases, is to guide creators, provide them the data, what they should expect with this. Also, help them market, help them reach new audiences, and dimensionalize their own brand… We like to consider ourselves the best partner because we can provide better results through our reach and strength of distribution in marketing. We want to help build their personal brand and work with them on what they want to accomplish with the project, so we want to be fulfilling to the creator, and we want to be easy and fun to work with." His thoughts on the future of marketing are: "The role of marketers is evolving, and I think we just need to recognize it because, I don't know, 20 years from now, we're not going to be wanting to be marketed to in the same way that we are today." 143:0.1 (1607.1) AT THE end of June, A.D. 27, because of the increasing opposition of the Jewish religious rulers, Jesus and the twelve departed from Jerusalem, after sending their tents and meager personal effects to be stored at the home of Lazarus at Bethany. Going north into Samaria, they tarried over the Sabbath at Bethel. Here they preached for several days to the people who came from Gophna and Ephraim. A group of citizens from Arimathea and Thamna came over to invite Jesus to visit their villages. The Master and his apostles spent more than two weeks teaching the Jews and Samaritans of this region, many of whom came from as far as Antipatris to hear the good news of the kingdom. 143:0.2 (1607.2) The people of southern Samaria heard Jesus gladly, and the apostles, with the exception of Judas Iscariot, succeeded in overcoming much of their prejudice against the Samaritans. It was very difficult for Judas to love these Samaritans. The last week of July Jesus and his associates made ready to depart for the new Greek cities of Phasaelis and Archelais near the Jordan. 1. Preaching at Archelais 143:1.1 (1607.3) The first half of the month of August the apostolic party made its headquarters at the Greek cities of Archelais and Phasaelis, where they had their first experience preaching to well-nigh exclusive gatherings of gentiles—Greeks, Romans, and Syrians—for few Jews dwelt in these two Greek towns. In contacting with these Roman citizens, the apostles encountered new difficulties in the proclamation of the message of the coming kingdom, and they met with new objections to the teachings of Jesus. At one of the many evening conferences with his apostles, Jesus listened attentively to these objections to the gospel of the kingdom as the twelve repeated their experiences with the subjects of their personal labors. 143:1.2 (1607.4) A question asked by Philip was typical of their difficulties. Said Philip: “Master, these Greeks and Romans make light of our message, saying that such teachings are fit for only weaklings and slaves. They assert that the religion of the heathen is superior to our teaching because it inspires to the acquirement of a strong, robust, and aggressive character. They affirm that we would convert all men into enfeebled specimens of passive nonresisters who would soon perish from the face of the earth. They like you, Master, and freely admit that your teaching is heavenly and ideal, but they will not take us seriously. They assert that your religion is not for this world; that men cannot live as you teach. And now, Master, what shall we say to these gentiles?” 143:1.3 (1607.5) After Jesus had heard similar objections to the gospel of the kingdom presented by Thomas, Nathaniel, Simon Zelotes, and Matthew, he said to the twelve: 143:1.4 (1608.1) “I have come into this world to do the will of my Father and to reveal his loving character to all mankind. That, my brethren, is my mission. And this one thing I will do, regardless of the misunderstanding of my teachings by Jews or gentiles of this day or of another generation. But you should not overlook the fact that even divine love has its severe disciplines. A father’s love for his son oftentimes impels the father to restrain the unwise acts of his thoughtless offspring. The child does not always comprehend the wise and loving motives of the father’s restraining discipline. But I declare to you that my Father in Paradise does rule a universe of universes by the compelling power of his love. Love is the greatest of all spirit realities. Truth is a liberating revelation, but love is the supreme relationship. And no matter what blunders your fellow men make in their world management of today, in an age to come the gospel which I declare to you will rule this very world. The ultimate goal of human progress is the reverent recognition of the fatherhood of God and the loving materialization of the brotherhood of man. 143:1.5 (1608.2) “But who told you that my gospel was intended only for slaves and weaklings? Do you, my chosen apostles, resemble weaklings? Did John look like a weakling? Do you observe that I am enslaved by fear? True, the poor and oppressed of this generation have the gospel preached to them. The religions of this world have neglected the poor, but my Father is no respecter of persons. Besides, the poor of this day are the first to heed the call to repentance and acceptance of sonship. The gospel of the kingdom is to be preached to all men—Jew and gentile, Greek and Roman, rich and poor, free and bond—and equally to young and old, male and female. 143:1.6 (1608.3) “Because my Father is a God of love and delights in the practice of mercy, do not imbibe the idea that the service of the kingdom is to be one of monotonous ease. The Paradise ascent is the supreme adventure of all time, the rugged achievement of eternity. The service of the kingdom on earth will call for all the courageous manhood that you and your coworkers can muster. Many of you will be put to death for your loyalty to the gospel of this kingdom. It is easy to die in the line of physical battle when your courage is strengthened by the presence of your fighting comrades, but it requires a higher and more profound form of human courage and devotion calmly and all alone to lay down your life for the love of a truth enshrined in your mortal heart. 143:1.7 (1608.4) “Today, the unbelievers may taunt you with preaching a gospel of nonresistance and with living lives of nonviolence, but you are the first volunteers of a long line of sincere believers in the gospel of this kingdom who will astonish all mankind by their heroic devotion to these teachings. No armies of the world have ever displayed more courage and bravery than will be portrayed by you and your loyal successors who shall go forth to all the world proclaiming the good news—the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of men. The courage of the flesh is the lowest form of bravery. Mind bravery is a higher type of human courage, but the highest and supreme is uncompromising loyalty to the enlightened convictions of profound spiritual realities. And such courage constitutes the heroism of the God-knowing man. And you are all God-knowing men; you are in very truth the personal associates of the Son of Man.” 143:1.8 (1608.5) This was not all that Jesus said on that occasion, but it is the introduction of his address, and he went on at great length in amplification and in illustration of this pronouncement. This was one of the most impassioned addresses which Jesus ever delivered to the twelve. Seldom did the Master speak to his apostles with evident strong feeling, but this was one of those few occasions when he spoke with manifest earnestness, accompanied by marked emotion. 143:1.9 (1609.1) The result upon the public preaching and personal ministry of the apostles was immediate; from that very day their message took on a new note of courageous dominance. The twelve continued to acquire the spirit of positive aggression in the new gospel of the kingdom. From this day forward they did not occupy themselves so much with the preaching of the negative virtues and the passive injunctions of their Master’s many-sided teaching. 2. Lesson on Self-Mastery 143:2.1 (1609.2) The Master was a perfected specimen of human self-control. When he was reviled, he reviled not; when he suffered, he uttered no threats against his tormentors; when he was denounced by his enemies, he simply committed himself to the righteous judgment of the Father in heaven. 143:2.2 (1609.3) At one of the evening conferences, Andrew asked Jesus: “Master, are we to practice self-denial as John taught us, or are we to strive for the self-control of your teaching? Wherein does your teaching differ from that of John?” Jesus answered: “John indeed taught you the way of righteousness in accordance with the light and laws of his fathers, and that was the religion of self-examination and self-denial. But I come with a new message of self-forgetfulness and self-control. I show to you the way of life as revealed to me by my Father in heaven. 143:2.3 (1609.4) “Verily, verily, I say to you, he who rules his own self is greater than he who captures a city. Self-mastery is the measure of man’s moral nature and the indicator of his spiritual development. In the old order you fasted and prayed; as the new creature of the rebirth of the spirit, you are taught to believe and rejoice. In the Father’s kingdom you are to become new creatures; old things are to pass away; behold I show you how all things are to become new. And by your love for one another you are to convince the world that you have passed from bondage to liberty, from death into life everlasting. 143:2.4 (1609.5) “By the old way you seek to suppress, obey, and conform to the rules of living; by the new way you are first transformed by the Spirit of Truth and thereby strengthened in your inner soul by the constant spiritual renewing of your mind, and so are you endowed with the power of the certain and joyous performance of the gracious, acceptable, and perfect will of God. Forget not—it is your personal faith in the exceedingly great and precious promises of God that ensures your becoming partakers of the divine nature. Thus by your faith and the spirit’s transformation, you become in reality the temples of God, and his spirit actually dwells within you. If, then, the spirit dwells within you, you are no longer bondslaves of the flesh but free and liberated sons of the spirit. The new law of the spirit endows you with the liberty of self-mastery in place of the old law of the fear of self-bondage and the slavery of self-denial. 143:2.5 (1609.6) “Many times, when you have done evil, you have thought to charge up your acts to the influence of the evil one when in reality you have but been led astray by your own natural tendencies. Did not the Prophet Jeremiah long ago tell you that the human heart is deceitful above all things and sometimes even desperately wicked? How easy for you to become self-deceived and thereby fall into foolish fears, divers lusts, enslaving pleasures, malice, envy, and even vengeful hatred! 143:2.6 (1610.1) “Salvation is by the regeneration of the spirit and not by the self-righteous deeds of the flesh. You are justified by faith and fellowshipped by grace, not by fear and the self-denial of the flesh, albeit the Father’s children who have been born of the spirit are ever and always masters of the self and all that pertains to the desires of the flesh. When you know that you are saved by faith, you have real peace with God. And all who follow in the way of this heavenly peace are destined to be sanctified to the eternal service of the ever-advancing sons of the eternal God. Henceforth, it is not a duty but rather your exalted privilege to cleanse yourselves from all evils of mind and body while you seek for perfection in the love of God. 143:2.7 (1610.2) “Your sonship is grounded in faith, and you are to remain unmoved by fear. Your joy is born of trust in the divine word, and you shall not therefore be led to doubt the reality of the Father’s love and mercy. It is the very goodness of God that leads men into true and genuine repentance. Your secret of the mastery of self is bound up with your faith in the indwelling spirit, which ever works by love. Even this saving faith you have not of yourselves; it also is the gift of God. And if you are the children of this living faith, you are no longer the bondslaves of self but rather the triumphant masters of yourselves, the liberated sons of God. 143:2.8 (1610.3) “If, then, my children, you are born of the spirit, you are forever delivered from the self-conscious bondage of a life of self-denial and watchcare over the desires of the flesh, and you are translated into the joyous kingdom of the spirit, whence you spontaneously show forth the fruits of the spirit in your daily lives; and the fruits of the spirit are the essence of the highest type of enjoyable and ennobling self-control, even the heights of terrestrial mortal attainment—true self-mastery.” 3. Diversion and Relaxation 143:3.1 (1610.4) About this time a state of great nervous and emotional tension developed among the apostles and their immediate disciple associates. They had hardly become accustomed to living and working together. They were experiencing increasing difficulties in maintaining harmonious relations with John’s disciples. The contact with the gentiles and the Samaritans was a great trial to these Jews. And besides all this, the recent utterances of Jesus had augmented their disturbed state of mind. Andrew was almost beside himself; he did not know what next to do, and so he went to the Master with his problems and perplexities. When Jesus had listened to the apostolic chief relate his troubles, he said: “Andrew, you cannot talk men out of their perplexities when they reach such a stage of involvement, and when so many persons with strong feelings are concerned. I cannot do what you ask of me—I will not participate in these personal social difficulties—but I will join you in the enjoyment of a three-day period of rest and relaxation. Go to your brethren and announce that all of you are to go with me up on Mount Sartaba, where I desire to rest for a day or two. 143:3.2 (1610.5) “Now you should go to each of your eleven brethren and talk with him privately, saying: ‘The Master desires that we go apart with him for a season to rest and relax. Since we all have recently experienced much vexation of spirit and stress of mind, I suggest that no mention be made of our trials and troubles while on this holiday. Can I depend upon you to co-operate with me in this matter?’ In this way privately and personally approach each of your brethren.” And Andrew did as the Master had instructed him. 143:3.3 (1611.1) This was a marvelous occasion in the experience of each of them; they never forgot the day going up the mountain. Throughout the entire trip hardly a word was said about their troubles. Upon reaching the top of the mountain, Jesus seated them about him while he said: “My brethren, you must all learn the value of rest and the efficacy of relaxation. You must realize that the best method of solving some entangled problems is to forsake them for a time. Then when you go back fresh from your rest or worship, you are able to attack your troubles with a clearer head and a steadier hand, not to mention a more resolute heart. Again, many times your problem is found to have shrunk in size and proportions while you have been resting your mind and body.” 143:3.4 (1611.2) The next day Jesus assigned to each of the twelve a topic for discussion. The whole day was devoted to reminiscences and to talking over matters not related to their religious work. They were momentarily shocked when Jesus even neglected to give thanks—verbally—when he broke bread for their noontide lunch. This was the first time they had ever observed him to neglect such formalities. 143:3.5 (1611.3) When they went up the mountain, Andrew’s head was full of problems. John was inordinately perplexed in his heart. James was grievously troubled in his soul. Matthew was hard pressed for funds inasmuch as they had been sojourning among the gentiles. Peter was overwrought and had recently been more temperamental than usual. Judas was suffering from a periodic attack of sensitiveness and selfishness. Simon was unusually upset in his efforts to reconcile his patriotism with the love of the brotherhood of man. Philip was more and more nonplused by the way things were going. Nathaniel had been less humorous since they had come in contact with the gentile populations, and Thomas was in the midst of a severe season of depression. Only the twins were normal and unperturbed. All of them were exceedingly perplexed about how to get along peaceably with John’s disciples. 143:3.6 (1611.4) The third day when they started down the mountain and back to their camp, a great change had come over them. They had made the important discovery that many human perplexities are in reality nonexistent, that many pressing troubles are the creations of exaggerated fear and the offspring of augmented apprehension. They had learned that all such perplexities are best handled by being forsaken; by going off they had left such problems to solve themselves. 143:3.7 (1611.5) Their return from this holiday marked the beginning of a period of greatly improved relations with the followers of John. Many of the twelve really gave way to mirth when they noted the changed state of everybody’s mind and observed the freedom from nervous irritability which had come to them as a result of their three days’ vacation from the routine duties of life. There is always danger that monotony of human contact will greatly multiply perplexities and magnify difficulties. 143:3.8 (1611.6) Not many of the gentiles in the two Greek cities of Archelais and Phasaelis believed in the gospel, but the twelve apostles gained a valuable experience in this their first extensive work with exclusively gentile populations. On a Monday morning, about the middle of the month, Jesus said to Andrew: “We go into Samaria.” And they set out at once for the city of Sychar, near Jacob’s well. 4. The Jews and the Samaritans 143:4.1 (1612.1) For more than six hundred years the Jews of Judea, and later on those of Galilee also, had been at enmity with the Samaritans. This ill feeling between the Jews and the Samaritans came about in this way: About seven hundred years B.C., Sargon, king of Assyria, in subduing a revolt in central Palestine, carried away and into captivity over twenty-five thousand Jews of the northern kingdom of Israel and installed in their place an almost equal number of the descendants of the Cuthites, Sepharvites, and the Hamathites. Later on, Ashurbanipal sent still other colonies to dwell in Samaria. 143:4.2 (1612.2) The religious enmity between the Jews and the Samaritans dated from the return of the former from the Babylonian captivity, when the Samaritans worked to prevent the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Later they offended the Jews by extending friendly assistance to the armies of Alexander. In return for their friendship Alexander gave the Samaritans permission to build a temple on Mount Gerizim, where they worshiped Yahweh and their tribal gods and offered sacrifices much after the order of the temple services at Jerusalem. At least they continued this worship up to the time of the Maccabees, when John Hyrcanus destroyed their temple on Mount Gerizim. The Apostle Philip, in his labors for the Samaritans after the death of Jesus, held many meetings on the site of this old Samaritan temple. 143:4.3 (1612.3) The antagonisms between the Jews and the Samaritans were time-honored and historic; increasingly since the days of Alexander they had had no dealings with each other. The twelve apostles were not averse to preaching in the Greek and other gentile cities of the Decapolis and Syria, but it was a severe test of their loyalty to the Master when he said, “Let us go into Samaria.” But in the year and more they had been with Jesus, they had developed a form of personal loyalty which transcended even their faith in his teachings and their prejudices against the Samaritans. 5. The Woman of Sychar 143:5.1 (1612.4) When the Master and the twelve arrived at Jacob’s well, Jesus, being weary from the journey, tarried by the well while Philip took the apostles with him to assist in bringing food and tents from Sychar, for they were disposed to stay in this vicinity for a while. Peter and the Zebedee sons would have remained with Jesus, but he requested that they go with their brethren, saying: “Have no fear for me; these Samaritans will be friendly; only our brethren, the Jews, seek to harm us.” And it was almost six o’clock on this summer’s evening when Jesus sat down by the well to await the return of the apostles. 143:5.2 (1612.5) The water of Jacob’s well was less mineral than that from the wells of Sychar and was therefore much valued for drinking purposes. Jesus was thirsty, but there was no way of getting water from the well. When, therefore, a woman of Sychar came up with her water pitcher and prepared to draw from the well, Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” This woman of Samaria knew Jesus was a Jew by his appearance and dress, and she surmised that he was a Galilean Jew from his accent. Her name was Nalda and she was a comely creature. She was much surprised to have a Jewish man thus speak to her at the well and ask for water, for it was not deemed proper in those days for a self-respecting man to speak to a woman in public, much less for a Jew to converse with a Samaritan. Therefore Nalda asked Jesus, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink of me, a Samaritan woman?” Jesus answered: “I have indeed asked you for a drink, but if you could only understand, you would ask me for a draught of the living water.” Then said Nalda: “But, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, have you this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us this well, and who drank thereof himself and his sons and his cattle also?” 143:5.3 (1613.1) Jesus replied: “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whosoever drinks of the water of the living spirit shall never thirst. And this living water shall become in him a well of refreshment springing up even to eternal life.” Nalda then said: “Give me this water that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw. Besides, anything which a Samaritan woman could receive from such a commendable Jew would be a pleasure.” * 143:5.4 (1613.2) Nalda did not know how to take Jesus’ willingness to talk with her. She beheld in the Master’s face the countenance of an upright and holy man, but she mistook friendliness for commonplace familiarity, and she misinterpreted his figure of speech as a form of making advances to her. And being a woman of lax morals, she was minded openly to become flirtatious, when Jesus, looking straight into her eyes, with a commanding voice said, “Woman, go get your husband and bring him hither.” This command brought Nalda to her senses. She saw that she had misjudged the Master’s kindness; she perceived that she had misconstrued his manner of speech. She was frightened; she began to realize that she stood in the presence of an unusual person, and groping about in her mind for a suitable reply, in great confusion, she said, “But, Sir, I cannot call my husband, for I have no husband.” Then said Jesus: “You have spoken the truth, for, while you may have once had a husband, he with whom you are now living is not your husband. Better it would be if you would cease to trifle with my words and seek for the living water which I have this day offered you.” 143:5.5 (1613.3) By this time Nalda was sobered, and her better self was awakened. She was not an immoral woman wholly by choice. She had been ruthlessly and unjustly cast aside by her husband and in dire straits had consented to live with a certain Greek as his wife, but without marriage. Nalda now felt greatly ashamed that she had so unthinkingly spoken to Jesus, and she most penitently addressed the Master, saying: “My Lord, I repent of my manner of speaking to you, for I perceive that you are a holy man or maybe a prophet.” And she was just about to seek direct and personal help from the Master when she did what so many have done before and since—dodged the issue of personal salvation by turning to the discussion of theology and philosophy. She quickly turned the conversation from her own needs to a theological controversy. Pointing over to Mount Gerizim, she continued: “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and yet you would say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship; which, then, is the right place to worship God?” 143:5.6 (1613.4) Jesus perceived the attempt of the woman’s soul to avoid direct and searching contact with its Maker, but he also saw that there was present in her soul a desire to know the better way of life. After all, there was in Nalda’s heart a true thirst for the living water; therefore he dealt patiently with her, saying: “Woman, let me say to you that the day is soon coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. But now you worship that which you know not, a mixture of the religion of many pagan gods and gentile philosophies. The Jews at least know whom they worship; they have removed all confusion by concentrating their worship upon one God, Yahweh. But you should believe me when I say that the hour will soon come—even now is—when all sincere worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for it is just such worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and they who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Your salvation comes not from knowing how others should worship or where but by receiving into your own heart this living water which I am offering you even now.” 143:5.7 (1614.1) But Nalda would make one more effort to avoid the discussion of the embarrassing question of her personal life on earth and the status of her soul before God. Once more she resorted to questions of general religion, saying: “Yes, I know, Sir, that John has preached about the coming of the Converter, he who will be called the Deliverer, and that, when he shall come, he will declare to us all things”—and Jesus, interrupting Nalda, said with startling assurance, “I who speak to you am he.” 143:5.8 (1614.2) This was the first direct, positive, and undisguised pronouncement of his divine nature and sonship which Jesus had made on earth; and it was made to a woman, a Samaritan woman, and a woman of questionable character in the eyes of men up to this moment, but a woman whom the divine eye beheld as having been sinned against more than as sinning of her own desire and as now being a human soul who desired salvation, desired it sincerely and wholeheartedly, and that was enough. 143:5.9 (1614.3) As Nalda was about to voice her real and personal longing for better things and a more noble way of living, just as she was ready to speak the real desire of her heart, the twelve apostles returned from Sychar, and coming upon this scene of Jesus’ talking so intimately with this woman—this Samaritan woman, and alone—they were more than astonished. They quickly deposited their supplies and drew aside, no man daring to reprove him, while Jesus said to Nalda: “Woman, go your way; God has forgiven you. Henceforth you will live a new life. You have received the living water, and a new joy will spring up within your soul, and you shall become a daughter of the Most High.” And the woman, perceiving the disapproval of the apostles, left her waterpot and fled to the city. 143:5.10 (1614.4) As she entered the city, she proclaimed to everyone she met: “Go out to Jacob’s well and go quickly, for there you will see a man who told me all I ever did. Can this be the Converter?” And ere the sun went down, a great crowd had assembled at Jacob’s well to hear Jesus. And the Master talked to them more about the water of life, the gift of the indwelling spirit. 143:5.11 (1614.5) The apostles never ceased to be shocked by Jesus’ willingness to talk with women, women of questionable character, even immoral women. It was very difficult for Jesus to teach his apostles that women, even so-called immoral women, have souls which can choose God as their Father, thereby becoming daughters of God and candidates for life everlasting. Even nineteen centuries later many show the same unwillingness to grasp the Master’s teachings. Even the Christian religion has been persistently built up around the fact of the death of Christ instead of around the truth of his life. The world should be more concerned with his happy and God-revealing life than with his tragic and sorrowful death. 143:5.12 (1614.6) Nalda told this entire story to the Apostle John the next day, but he never revealed it fully to the other apostles, and Jesus did not speak of it in detail to the twelve. 143:5.13 (1615.1) Nalda told John that Jesus had told her “all I ever did.” John many times wanted to ask Jesus about this visit with Nalda, but he never did. Jesus told her only one thing about herself, but his look into her eyes and the manner of his dealing with her had so brought all of her checkered life in panoramic review before her mind in a moment of time that she associated all of this self-revelation of her past life with the look and the word of the Master. Jesus never told her she had had five husbands. She had lived with four different men since her husband cast her aside, and this, with all her past, came up so vividly in her mind at the moment when she realized Jesus was a man of God that she subsequently repeated to John that Jesus had really told her all about herself. 6. The Samaritan Revival 143:6.1 (1615.2) On the evening that Nalda drew the crowd out from Sychar to see Jesus, the twelve had just returned with food, and they besought Jesus to eat with them instead of talking to the people, for they had been without food all day and were hungry. But Jesus knew that darkness would soon be upon them; so he persisted in his determination to talk to the people before he sent them away. When Andrew sought to persuade him to eat a bite before speaking to the crowd, Jesus said, “I have meat to eat that you do not know about.” When the apostles heard this, they said among themselves: “Has any man brought him aught to eat? Can it be that the woman gave him food as well as drink?” When Jesus heard them talking among themselves, before he spoke to the people, he turned aside and said to the twelve: “My meat is to do the will of Him who sent me and to accomplish His work. You should no longer say it is such and such a time until the harvest. Behold these people coming out from a Samaritan city to hear us; I tell you the fields are already white for the harvest. He who reaps receives wages and gathers this fruit to eternal life; consequently the sowers and the reapers rejoice together. For herein is the saying true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I am now sending you to reap that whereon you have not labored; others have labored, and you are about to enter into their labor.” This he said in reference to the preaching of John the Baptist. * 143:6.2 (1615.3) Jesus and the apostles went into Sychar and preached two days before they established their camp on Mount Gerizim. And many of the dwellers in Sychar believed the gospel and made request for baptism, but the apostles of Jesus did not yet baptize. 143:6.3 (1615.4) The first night of the camp on Mount Gerizim the apostles expected that Jesus would rebuke them for their attitude toward the woman at Jacob’s well, but he made no reference to the matter. Instead he gave them that memorable talk on “The realities which are central in the kingdom of God.” In any religion it is very easy to allow values to become disproportionate and to permit facts to occupy the place of truth in one’s theology. The fact of the cross became the very center of subsequent Christianity; but it is not the central truth of the religion which may be derived from the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. 143:6.4 (1615.5) The theme of Jesus’ teaching on Mount Gerizim was: That he wants all men to see God as a Father-friend just as he (Jesus) is a brother-friend. And again and again he impressed upon them that love is the greatest relationship in the world—in the universe—just as truth is the greatest pronouncement of the observation of these divine relationships. 143:6.5 (1616.1) Jesus declared himself so fully to the Samaritans because he could safely do so, and because he knew that he would not again visit the heart of Samaria to preach the gospel of the kingdom. 143:6.6 (1616.2) Jesus and the twelve camped on Mount Gerizim until the end of August. They preached the good news of the kingdom—the fatherhood of God—to the Samaritans in the cities by day and spent the nights at the camp. The work which Jesus and the twelve did in these Samaritan cities yielded many souls for the kingdom and did much to prepare the way for the marvelous work of Philip in these regions after Jesus’ death and resurrection, subsequent to the dispersion of the apostles to the ends of the earth by the bitter persecution of believers at Jerusalem. 7. Teachings About Prayer and Worship 143:7.1 (1616.3) A

Ray Hoffman introduces the guest for this episode. John Byrne and Ray Hoffman have known each other for so long that they refer to each other as old friends. John is one of the most significant business journalists of his generation, having written over two dozen cover stories for Business Week, where eventually he became Executive Editor. He also was Editor-in-Chief of Fast Company and the author of some major business biographies of such figures as Jack Welch of GE and the Whiz Kids, including Robert McNamara, who reshaped Ford Motor Company and industrial America after World War II. He’s probably best known and most highly regarded as the go-to journalist on all matters relating to MBA programs and graduate business schools. That began at Business Week in 1988 when he compiled the first ever published ranking of graduate business school programs. Today, that continues within his second career as an entrepreneur. He’s Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of California-based C-Change Media, which operates five websites, including the number-one source for information about MBA programs, Poets & Quants.Listen in to hear more of John’s journey from journalist to journalist-entrepreneur.   Key Takeaways: [:22] Ray Hoffman introduces John Byrne for this episode of This Is Capitalism.[1:41] Did John imagine he would always be a professional journalist for a major publication? John describes the magazine publishing environment of Business Week twenty years ago and how he loved it. Then came the internet. [2:43] Business Week went online for the first time in 1994. AOL gave Business Week a $1 million contract for its content. John built out a Business Week community online. It was clear that this was something that was going to be a major change in the way we thought about what we create, how we create it, and how our audience interacts with it. [3:52] John created the first regularly-published ranking of MBA programs in the world in 1988. John was the Management Editor at Business Week at that time. He created the ranking to entice schools to seek to be included. It began as a biannual feature. [4:52] Companies had been complaining for years that MBA graduates had ‘quant’ skills but were challenged in the area of soft, people skills, which were not being taught in schools. [5:59] John’s idea was to hold schools accountable to their two primary audiences: the graduates and the people that hired them. [7:17] The business school issue was the best-selling cover of the year in 1988. It became immediately controversial and it gathered a lot of attention. John explains how the coverage expanded over the years to an online community in 1994. [7:51] Guidebooks were published by owner company McGraw-Hill. The guidebooks covered all aspects of MBA education and they became very big sellers. [8:11] Toward the end of John’s career at Business Week, John was the Editor-in-Chief of online operations. The average monthly unique visitor at Business Week looked at 1.8 pages; the average monthly unique visitor to the business school section looked at 58 pages. That was an eye-opener. [9:24] The first survey was a consumer satisfaction survey looking for opinions of graduates and the companies that hired them. John wanted it to be simple and pure. Business Week did not tell the survey respondents that it was for a ranking. [10:01] Now, when you survey alumni or companies, there is an inherent bias to the results because they know that the survey will impact how their school fares on the ranking. There is a lot of ‘cheerleading.’ [10:40] The survey was a true labor of love. Back in 1988, there was no internet or email. John collected the names of the graduates, printed out surveys from his home Mac and printer, and stuffed, labeled, licked, and sent out the envelopes. His family helped, in front of the TV watching Yankee games. It took a month of nights. [11:55] Ray notes that the first J.D. Power surveys were also sent from Power’s living room with the Power children helping. [12:17] John tells about the creation of the Poets & Quants website. Quants & Poets was a common term in business schools but unknown outside of the field. A good business school brings together Liberal Arts majors and Science majors, so they can build on each others’ strengths and minimize weaknesses. [13:49] When John thought about starting his company, he remembered this phrase. It is popular lingo to anyone in that world. About nine years ago, Bloomberg bought Business Week. It seemed like the right time for John to go on his own, online. [14:51] John looked at the importance of engagement with his audience. Online content provides a very different level of engagement. John knew there was a market for his planned business from the business school section of the Business Week website. [15:08] In John’s last few years at Business Week, the management did not understand all that John was doing. The average age of a Business Week reader was in the early fifties. John wanted to convert twenty-somethings who visited the website into readers. [16:13] John’s idea was to do a Huffington Post for business. He talked to the former publisher of Forbes.com and to Andy Serwer, who was then Managing Editor of Fortune. John suggested that the three of them get together to build up this company with 10 microsites around businesses that were under-covered in journalism. [17:41] The content would connect to a mega site that would cover business and the economy more broadly. They expected to rely heavily on contributions from consultants and professors with an editorial staff to create original content. Due to different individual financial goals of the group, it never happened. [18:34] Instead, John went to California and started his first website, contracting with a web developer and a designer to create the site, while John created content and enlisted freelancers to help generate more content. John wanted the site to live with a fairly significant amount of journalism in place. [19:13] In those days, Google might take months to recognize a site, but they were very quick to index social media like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook, so John created channels on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook using the new Poets & Quants logo before launching the site. He curated existing content to build an audience. [19:51] When the site was launched nine years ago, in August, they already had an audience from social media, with Google helping their SEO. [20:12] John did it on his own. John’s biggest investment was his time spent reporting and writing for several months to launch. John has not borrowed a dollar or taken a dollar of investment. He owns 100% of the company. [20:35] John has five websites run by 12 full-time employees with benefits and 401(k) plans. The main Poets & Quants site gets 35% of its traffic from outside of the United States. One of the sites is a global conference business. [21:06] John talks about the feature, The Best and the Brightest, about MBA graduates from various programs. John praises Senior Writer, Jeff Schmitt, who created the feature. John explains how they get nominations and pick the best and brightest. [22:29] The feature puts a face on the program and the school and shows the graduate’s motivation and their journey. It is meant to inspire and motivate others to get more education in a program that is right for them. [23:12] John brings up student debt and employment out of college. He discusses the value of MBAs and the market for them. John says 60% of MBAs don’t borrow for their degree because they get scholarship help but those that borrow can pay it off quickly. [24:37] People look at the tuition and fees and get sticker shock but, in some schools, 100% of the students are on scholarships; many are on full scholarships. [25:18] The average class at Harvard Business School is 930 students in a two-year program, so 1,860 are enrolled. 50% get scholarship help. The scholarships are based on need, not merit. Harvard spends $36 million a year on scholarships to 930 students. [26:17] Stanford gives the same level of support to their students, individually. Many other schools are in an “arms race” to give out scholarship money. The MBA is a flagship program. The higher they can rank, the better it reflects on the entire school. So schools are willing to use the MBA program as a loss leader for their other programs. [27:15] For MBA students who pay full price, John says they will have no problem paying off the loan quickly, with an employment sign-on bonus and a salary of $140K, depending on the field they choose. [28:44] In our strong economy with virtually full employment, applications to MBA programs have fallen sharply. Sticker price and a decline in international candidates into the U.S. are other reasons for the dropoff. The documentation to get a visa can be burdensome. Also, good online MBA programs have become very popular. [31:50] There are also specialized Master’s programs such as business analytics, supply chain management, HR management, healthcare administration, and others, that people are choosing right out of college. [32:21] Young people often choose a one-year specialized Master’s or an online MBA. [33:03] Across all the students, the discount on a Harvard Business School degree is 40%. Other schools vary. John cites major school offerings. [33:28] Destination websites with a lot of content and advertising support are like gorillas in a cage that need to be fed a lot of bananas every day. Content is very important. John says content is the campfire around which you gather an audience that has a conversation that creates unity. [34:29] The content has to be new, updated, creative, smart, insightful, valuable, and produced daily. If the content gets old, the traffic starts to fall. It’s a big, serious job. [35:40] In addition to writing every day, editing, and publishing, John also has a company to run with all the money and management concerns running a business involves. John recruits clients from the business school community. Right now, John is considering investing in a customized software platform to do one thing for the site. [37:03] Most of John’s life, he covered management and leadership. Now, he has a real P&L and it is work to get stuff done on a daily basis. [37:44] Ray and John discuss their years of study of Frank Sinatra the performer. Sinatra recorded commercially in seven decades. John compares the body of Sinatra’s music to the work of an entrepreneur. John thinks Sinatra’s biggest regret might be the years he didn’t record. John sees and contrasts three phases of Sinatra’s work. [40:07] John Byrne’s C-Change Media is capitalism — journalistic entrepreneurial capitalism. He has worked in Patrol, Street Crime Unit, Uniform Gang Task Force, CFSEU, Youth Section, and Community Policing. Currently, John is assigned to the North Delta District Community Policing Office and is working on his Master of Laws Degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. His wife, Kristina, is also a police officer and is a member of the Surrey RCMP. Together they have 3 children: Dante, Brooklyn and Ari.   John has been through a number of difficult challenges over the course of his career, with the most recent challenge happening only a month ago (from the time this episode was recorded.) From two collision incidents to heart surgery to being stabbed while intervening in an altercation off-duty — John has been through many traumatic events but has also learned a lot along the way. In this episode, he shares in great detail the stories of each event, what he did to overcome them, how he recovered after each one, and what he did to get back to his normal working routine.   Key Takeaways: [:45] Chief Neil Dubord welcomes John Jasmins on to the podcast. [1:15] Chief Neil Dubord opens up this week’s podcast with an easy question for John: what did he have for breakfast? [2:19] John speaks a bit about his career and then dives into a story of what occured while he was working towards his goal of getting into the CFSEU. [6:42] What was going through John’s mind when he got into an accident on his first shift in his new position with the CFSEU? And was he getting the support he needed from management at the time? [9:20] About John’s recovery from the collision accident: how long it took for him to get back to work and the long-term impacts. [9:54] How much time did John spend with the Uniform Gang Task Force? What position in the department did he hold next? [10:10] What the Street Crime Unit does at Delta. [10:47] The second collision John was involved in — this time, with the Street Crime Unit — less than a year later. [14:42] The importance of management supporting their police officers. [15:20] Did John feel support from management with this second collision? [15:42] What could have management done to make John feel more supported during this incident? [16:14] How John’s career unfolded after this second collision incident. [16:44] Now transitioned to the Youth Section at the DPD, what sort of work was John doing? [18:30] In the fall of 2015, John fell brutally ill, leading to him needing open heart surgery. [20:29] How long was it between the time John was diagnosed and when he had the open heart surgery? How did he manage to keep on working while waiting for the surgery? [23:12] The tough choice John had to make with which kind of surgery he wanted to have on his heart. [25:52] The outcome of John’s surgery, the length of his recovery period, and what he did to stay resilient. [28:36] John begins the story of the most recent incident he was involved in. [29:38] What were John’s first concern after being stabbed? Did he know how bad it was? [32:10] Does John have any memories from the ambulance ride or the hospital? [33:43] John recounts the conversations he had before his life-saving surgery. [36:18] About John’s recovery post-surgery. [37:21] What helped John from the organization to overcome these incidents and what he did, himself, to overcome these challenges. [39:22] Chief Neil Dubord turns it over to Constable Aaron Hill, who speaks about becoming the victor in these kinds of situations; not the victim. [41:01] John shares some final pieces of wisdom about the lessons he has learned. [42:20] Chief Neil Dubord thanks John for joining him this episode!   Mentioned in this Episode: Bend Don’t Break Episode: “The Challenge of a Lifetime: Sergeant Ray Athwal’s Wait for a New Heart” Bend Don’t Break Episode: “On the Brink of Losing Your Job, Your Health, and Your Father: Constable Aaron Hill’s Lesson in Resiliency”   Looking for More Episodes? Jesus' identity as Son of God is revealed at his baptism by John, an old-style prophet who promotes Jewish ritual washing. Did John recognise Jesus at this event or not? The gospels differ. They regard the Baptist as a problematic figure, and treat him enigmatically. The synoptic gospels downplay him. The gospel of John (the apostle, not the Baptist) takes him over.

Here are some of the fun and informative questions you will get to hear the answers to: What would be the one thing Russell would suggest anybody starting out in business should focus on? What’s Russell’s biggest secret to building funnels? What Russell wishes he would have done differently? And what Russell’s team relieves him from? So listen here for the answers to these questions and many more from Dana Derricks. ---Transcript--- What’s up everybody? This is Russell Brunson, welcome to Marketing Secrets podcast. I’m so excited to have you here. Today I’m going to share with you a behind the scenes interview with my man, Mr. Dana Derricks. Hey everyone, welcome back to Marketing Secrets. If you have not yet subscribed, if you are on iTunes, please subscribe and leave us a comment. If you are watching this one YouTube, please click on our YouTube channel and subscribe so you keep getting amazing videos like this. Right now, what I want to share with you guys is behind the scenes of an interview that happened earlier last week. Dana Derricks is in my inner circle program, he just started year number two and when someone joins my inner circle, or they re-up after a year, I let them be part of what we call Decade in a Day. Decade in a Day is basically where I take a decade of my life experiences, my business experiences and jam it into a day for that person. Basically I do this about once a month with my inner circle members. And it was really funny because this time, Dana showed up and instead of just asking me a bunch of, or instead of doing a normal consult back and forth, he just came back and said, “Hey I have a whole list of questions I want for you.” Some were really good questions, some were off the wall, there were all sorts of place, it was hilarious. But there was some really powerful, strong things that came out of the interview and I thought between the humor and the gold, I thought it would be awesome to share with you. So I asked Dana if he’d be willing to let me share this with you guys. And luckily for me and for you and for everybody, he said yes. So I want to take you guys behind the scenes of a Decade in a Day call with Dana Derricks. Like I said, for those who don’t know Dana yet, you will appreciate and love his humor. He is a goat farmer, he’s speaking at Funnel Hacking Live, and some of these questions are amazing. With that said, we’re going to jump over to the interview and have some fun. What’s up Dana? Dana: Yo! What’s up? Russell: How’s it going man? Dana: Good, good. How are you guys doing? Russell: Amazing. (Other people greeting and cheering.) Dana: Oh this is going to be great. Russell: This better be great. Dana: Yeah, no pressure, right. Russell: We were betting before we turned it live, we’re like, “Is he gonna have any goats in the office with him?” Dana: Well, if it wasn’t so cold, I probably could have made that happen. Russell: That’s amazing. So obviously, I know you really well. Do you want to tell everyone who you are, who doesn’t know, and then we can have some fun? Dana: Yeah, we can do that. You’re in for a treat by the way. You’re going to like this, I’m glad I’m last. Whoever set that up, kudos to them. They deserve some treat, Mandy. Oh man. Hold your breath. Russell: Literal or no? Dana: You’ll be fine. You ready? Russell: I’m ready. Ready to rock and roll. Dana: Are we live? Russell: You’re live. Dana: I thought you had to press a button or something. Hey what’s up everybody? I’m a goat farmer, I don’t know technology very well. We’ve been live for 5 minutes, I’ve blown 5 minutes of my time. If you don’t know me, my name is Dana, I’m a goat farmer that Russell let into the inner circle. Also I write copy. And that’s about all. Russell: And books, a lot of books. Dana: Oh yeah. Russell: I got a few books from you this week and I was like, “Did you write both of these this week?” amazing. Dana: Kinda. Yeah did you get that package? Russell: Yeah, that was amazing. Thank you. Dana: Oh yeah, no, for sure. Russell: It was like, here’s the salad you can eat now and here’s what you can have after the BORT. Did you hear we changed it from BART to BORT? Dana: You did? Russell: A Big And Ripped Transformation and BORT is Big Or Ripped Transformation, so you get to choose. We’re calling Bart- Bort now. So feel free to do that, he’ll love it. Dana: Bort Miller, I love it. Yeah dude, the secret about sending stuff in the mail is it’s a lot harder to opt out of receiving mail in the mail, as opposed to like email. So that’s kind of the trick. Russell: During your presentation you should show that clip from Seinfeld where Kramer’s like, “I’m out.” And he breaks up his mailbox. Dana: That’s good. I like that. And you can tell when they do opt out because your stuff comes back to you. That’s awesome. Okay, so I guess I have something prepared. I don’t have slides or anything. I don’t really understand technology that well. So I have a list of just a bunch of questions I’m going to ask you, if that’s okay? Russell: Heck yeah. Dana: Alright cool. So there’s going to be three sections. The first is just business, the second is life, and the third is whatever questions we’re going to open it up to. You guys can ask me, feel free to pick my brain all you want. And then the audience can interject. I don’t know where they are, but if you guys can see anything that they’re saying, let’s do it. Cool? Russell: Let’s do it. Dana: Alright, I might, if you start talking too long, because I’ve got this spaced out just right, I’ll probably just cut you off, okay? Don’t worry about it, I’ll control the time. We’ll start off easy okay. What would you estimate to be the ROI on the spend of one goat over a twelve month period? Russell: For average humans or for Dana? Dana: You’d be surprised. I’d say average humans. Russell: For an average human it’s probably not very good. You can milk goats, right? Dana: You can. Russell: Can you eat goats? You probably don’t eat goats, do you? Dana: I wouldn’t advice it. Russell: You milk them, you shear them to get wool? Dana: No, they have weird fur. Russell: So just milk. Alright. Dana: Pretty much, milk and cheese. Russell: Milk and cheese. I bet you double the ROI. I bet you pay a thousand for a goat you get $2 grand back? Dana: That’s really close. That’s real good. Did John tell you that. Russell: No, that was off the top of my head. I had no idea. Dana: Nice. Good, good. You’re going to have goats soon. Russell: I have astro turf on my field now, they can’t… Dana: They’ll eat it, don’t worry. What would be the one thing you would suggest anybody starting out in business to focus on? Russell: Like the initial, when you’re first, first beginning? Dana: Yep. Russell: Probably focusing on developing yourself through serving other people, until you actually become amazing at whatever it is you want to sell in the future. Dana: So other people’s results instead of your own? Russell: Yeah. Go and serve people, get results, then that becomes the catalyst for everything else. Dana: Nice. What would be one thing you would suggest, anybody that’s already having success, to focus on? Russell: Is this going to become a book someday? This is like the chapters of a book. He’s pre-writing it, he’s making me write the book for him. Dana: Getting content one way or another. Russell: I can use this time however I want Russell. So people who are already having success, I would say the biggest thing is, a lot of times, especially with creators, we have success and then we get complacent for a while because I think initially when we start, a lot of times we are thinking about ourselves. And then you get to the point where it’s like all your needs are met. And most people sit complacent until they realize that this has nothing to do with them. Then you transition back to how do I serve people more? That’s when the next level of success happens. For me, business for me was selfish for a long time. I was trying to figure out how to make money, then my needs were met, and then more so, then it’s like, now what? It wasn’t until I really started focusing on the contribution side of it, then all the sudden, then it lights you back on fire again because you don’t….someone asked me yesterday, why don’t you sell for whatever? And I’m like, I don’t need money at this point in my life, this is about the contribution which is like, the exciting part. Money gets dumb. After you pay your house off, you’re like, well I don’t know what else to do. Dana: {Inaudible} Okay, awesome. Love it. What’s your biggest secret to building funnels? Russell: I don’t start building a funnel until I’ve found another funnel that I’m modeling, like a concept. So I’m always very clear of this is where we’re going. And number two I focus most of the effort or energy on the copy or the stories. Each page in a funnel is its own story that you’re telling, you’re crafting to get them to take the next action, and that’s where we focus. Anyone can do a funnel now with Clickfunnels. Woo hoo, I’ve got a funnel. It’s like understanding and mastering the story, even the short form story. I’ve got a headline and an opt in box, what’s the story I’m telling there? What’s the story on the landing page, and the upsell page? Basically taking the Perfect Webinar structure and breaking it down into, over a set of pages and orchestrating the whole thing together. So that’s where I spend most of my… Dana: Okay, would you also say it’s like, then connecting the dots too? It’s like taking them on a journey. Because people think you just throw them in the top and then they end up in the bottom. But you have to hold their hand throughout. Russell: Yeah, hold their hand and it’s like, when I’m doing a funnel I always think about if my mom was to come and buy this thing….like let’s say she bought this superman little thing. She’s like, “This is awesome.” And then she buys that and then she looks and “What should I get next?” and I’d be like, “Okay, let me explain to you why you need the next thing.” And it’s not like, I get people who all the time that ask me, their questions are like, “What price point should my upsell be?” and I’m like, that has nothing to do with anything. Price point is completely irrelevant. They just bought this, what’s the next logical thing that they need or they think they need to get the end result they’re trying to get. Whatever the price is, doesn’t really matter. It just doesn’t logically make sense. “I have this, now I need this, and this is where I’m going.” Dana: Dude, you’d be such a good goat farmer, because it’s like, they get out, they’re in the neighbor’s yard. So you gotta go over there to get over there, and you gotta bring just enough treats to get them back into your yard. So now they’re in your yard, which is an improvement, but they’re still not in the pen. Then you gotta get them over to the gate with another set of treats. Then you gotta keep them there long enough to get the gate open and then get them back into their actual pen. It’s the same thing as funnels, right? Russell: Goat funnel secrets. You should tell this, that’s actually really cool. That’s what you’re doing, that’s the name of the book we’re writing right now, isn’t it? Dana: Maybe. That’s awesome. What’s your biggest secret to traffic and getting people into your funnels? Russell: You know the answer to this already. But our biggest focus is Dream 100, at all levels. SEO’s Dream 100, PPC’s Dream 100, Facebook ads Dream 100. Dream 100 is affiliates. So it’s like, I’m a hyper, big believer in we’re not going to create traffic so who’s already congregating to that traffic, and then we Dream 100 them from every level, every aspect. We’re doing SEO stuff right now and it’s like, it’s funny because everyone’s like, “How do we get back links?” and it’s like Dream 100. “What do you mean?” I’m like, “Find who’s got the best blog with the best traffic, the best page rank, we Dream 100 them and get an article, and then that gets the dream link we want back and that solves all problems.” Dana: Awesome. What’s your biggest secret to converting traffic once they’re in your funnel? Russell: I always say that the world we live in right now, there’s two steps. The front end direct response, it’s all conversion to get somebody to do whatever to get them into our world, and then when they’re in our world I transition from, I don’t transition away from direct response, but I layer in branding with direct response and now it’s like personality and direct response principals together. Because the front end doesn’t, personality doesn’t get somebody to opt in, typically a new person. It’s like hard core curiosity, the right hook to get somebody in, and after they’re in, to keep them there, it’s like I instantly transform into brand and personality and things like that. The better connection I can build with people the faster, the easier the conversion is. So it’s like putting in all this time and effort into building trust, rapport and the conversions become easier and easier afterwards. Natalie Hodson did a video I think two nights ago. I watched it last night, a Facebook live. It’s her like, “Don’t buy my courses.” And then told her whole story about why she started doing this and how she, it told her whole story of how she came into this business and how much money she has to put in ads to sell a book and how she’s able to have…told that story and I told her, I voxed her like, “This is so good. Everyone who opts in, make them watch this first because they will instantly love you, and then they will buy everything else you have from that point forward.” But that would be horrible as a front end ad. Nobody would ever buy off it. But you convert them in, use that attention now to build a brand and a connection and then conversion becomes super easy. Now its just taking them on a story of your life and you’re offering them bits, the story of how you created that and how that story comes back to them. Dana: Love it. So with that too, that’s part of the strategy of entertaining and putting out, just letting them into your life. And I think it’s important for people to know too because ultimately, looking at the stats, that stuff you could argue is a waste of time, but at the end of the day it’s not because you’re doing exactly what you’re suggesting, that’s the overall strategy on that, isn’t it? Russell: 100% Because I could do an offer nowadays not to my own audience, if I try to drive traffic to it, it would never convert. But I do that same offer to my audience and we’ll do a million dollars in a webinar because it’s like, they love me, they trust me at this point, they have a connection with me, if I’m creating it, whereas with cold traffic it wouldn’t work.  It’s that, I don’t know, when I got started in this game it was 100% direct response, and there was like the branding guys who I always hated. And now it’s like, the mushing of those two worlds together. Direct response to get them in, and then the branding to build a connection and then the hand off is like, I think that’s the future of marketing. Those two schools of thought merging together into a super power. Dana: That’s awesome. I totally get that as a direct response guy. Okay, before I ask the next one, I have to just throw a disclaimer. I was not involved in all of the question selection. So, just putting that out there. Okay, so I wanted to clear the air and dispel the rumors. Is the CEO of Lowkey Pages actually running the company from prison? Russell: I think so. Dana: Okay, awesome. Russell: I’m pretty sure. Dana: Must be, with the branding it makes perfect sense. Russell: Did you know that the real CEO of the real Lowkey Pages got, anyway, I probably shouldn’t say it publically on video. Never mind. Dana: I didn’t do any back research on that one, that was a mistake. What’s your best advice for somebody deploying the Dream 100? Russell: I think it’s understanding tiers of levels. When I first got in this game I remember the people that I was trying to connect with were Joe Vitale, Mark Joyner, all these guys who were legends and I tried so hard to get their attention. No matter how creative I was it just kind of fell on deaf ears. I remember being offended and kind of upset at first, but I was, I don’t know, I was just kind of a nobody at the time. So after trying it out for a while and not having success I was like, this doesn’t work. Then I met a bunch of people that were kind of at my same level, or a little above me, but they were approachable. It was guys like Mike Filsaime, I don’t remember who it was back that, but a bunch of guys like that. We were all kind of the same level. So I started connecting with them with Dream 100, and because they weren’t up here, they were here, we became friends and we also crossed with each other, helping each other. It was cool. In a very short period of time, within a year, year and a half, all of our businesses came up to these other guys. At that point I started contacting these guys again and they were like, “Oh I see you everywhere man.” And I’m like, “I’ve been sending you stuff for years and you never respond back.” And then they answer your call and it’s like, “Yes, send a package to Tony Robins, that’s amazing. He’s probably not going to do a deal with any of us.” It took me 10 years to get Tony to finally promote something, 10 years of my life, and he was like, “Russell’s book is awesome, you should read it.” But 10 years it took. That’s awesome, but what’s better is look around at the market right now, and who’s kind of at your level and start connecting there. It may not be a billion dollar win over night, but a whole bunch of little wins add up and eventually you’re best friends with whoever you need to be up here, at that level. So I think that’s the biggest thing I would tell people. Dana: Man, I hope the inner circle is listening. Because that is a great lesson for all of us. There you go. How many times were you on the verge of completely giving up? Russell: Like how many days did that happen or like…. Dana: How many different times do you think? Russell: There were a lot, one happened early. It lasted a couple of weeks. Oh, I’m going to figure out the piece. After our company collapsed and I had to lay off 80 people overnight, it was everyday for two years. I would have quit if I didn’t have tax obligations to the IRS that would have thrown me in jail if I would have quit. I had some really good motivators. For two years I hated this business, and I did not like it even a little bit. Until we finally paid the IRS off, it took that strain off, where it’s like, now creativity could happen again and then it became fun again. But a lot of times, I sometimes nowadays even, it’s funny because some days it’s like, why are we doing this? I don’t know what causes that, but I think for me, whenever that does happen it’s like a selfish thing. When I’m thinking about myself more, but what’s cool is I’ll go to bed and sit there miserable and see my phone and I’ll see a bunch of voxers from people and every time I have a voxer and someone says something nice to me I star it. So I have a whole list of starred ones, so I’ll go and listen to those. And all these people who are like, I got one of yours in there, I got other people. It’s just like, you hear them, their gratitude for what you’re doing. Thank you for what you do…it’s like alright, that’s why we do this. Then we’re back into the game. So it’s less often nowadays for me, for sure. During the down times it’s tough and it happened a lot. Dana: That’s awesome. Okay, cool. And he’s definitely not lying folks, because when I was out there writing copy for you, I remember somebody did something stupid, I don’t know, somebody said something or whatever and you got like, “Geez, seriously?” You’re like, sarcastically I think you said, “I don’t want to be CEO anymore. I just want to create stuff.” And I’m sitting there in the corner, thinking, I glance over at Dave thinking, “I’ll be CEO.” Russell: I want your problems, Russell. That’s awesome. Dana: Yeah, so I’ll be on deck. Russell: I think about this a lot. My goal was never, 15 years ago when I started I wasn’t like, “Someday I’m going to be CEO of this big, huge company. I’ll be on video.” No, I just wanted to create. For me this is art. Why do I keep creating funnels? People are like, “Your company is doing great.” It’s the art for me. I’m an artist, this is how I do my art. I just love it. A lot of times I would much rather hang up the CEO hat and go back to the art of doing the thing. Dana: Yeah, it’s awesome. Looking back, what do you wish you would have done differently? Russell: From Clickfunnels as a whole, or business as a whole? Dana: Yeah, let’s look at business as a whole. Russell: I think, man, the first 10 years of my life I was running around trying to be all things to all people, and like 3 ½ - 4 years ago was the first time I was like, kind of set my flag in the ground what I was going to do. As far as Clickfunnels as a whole, looking back on it now, I would have started a software company way faster. That’s 100% sure. Of all the business models I’ve done, it’s the one I like the most. But I would have done it different too. I think if I was to start over from scratch, I would have just done Clickfunnels and that would have been it. We wouldn’t have had Backpack and Actionetics and all these other things. I would have made it simpler. I look at some people have software where it’s sticky but it’s simple. Like it does one thing. There’s power in that. You’re tech team can focus on making that one thing better and better and better as opposed to… Like right now, our biggest problem we’ve had until just recently is our tech team can focus on this part over here, and it’s like, “Okay, everyone move over here and over here.” So now we’re at a point where, as we did that the last time through, we are taking focus here. We hired a whole bunch of people to learn it while they were in there focusing and then we left, and now they’re focusing on making it better. The mistake is three years to get to that point. So I think I would have made simpler software that everyone could focus on one thing. That’s the thing too, with Clickfunnels I have so many messages I have to sell now, so many. I would have focused on just a simple message, simple tool, simple thing. Dana: I love that. Do you know what a Juicy Lucy is? The burger? Russell: No, sounds amazing. Dana: It is. It might be a Minnesota thing. So Brandon and Kaelin flew out for a Viking game and then we went and hung out for a while and they took me to this bar in this weird neighborhood, it was really sketchy, to get a Juicy Lucy. So it’s basically a burger with cheese in the middle, and it was this place called Matt’s Bar in St. Paul, Minnesota, it’s world famous. Anyway, we get in there, and I’m with Brandon and Kaelin, we get in line for the burger, it’s just a nasty looking place, really bad, but great burger, world famous. And what we noticed was, they served us the burger with fries and ketchup and a napkin in a crappy little basket, and then we had water. And then I think it was Kaelin, was like, “Hey, do you have ice?” And they’re like, “Nope.” A bar without ice. And I was like, someone else asked for something but then I asked, “Do you guys have a fork?” “Nope.” So they have Juicy Lucy’s and French fries, and they do that better than every other person and that’s why even despite all their shortcomings they’re the best. So it’s a good a lesson, I think, for everybody. Alright, lightening the mood a bit. Did you know that James P. Friell is actually a really nice guy, deep down? Russell: He’s actually a nice guy, deep down. Dana: He is. Russell: I see glimpses of that, I think it’s possible. Dana: Is he there? Where is he? He has the day off. Russell: Did he leave for the day? Woman: I don’t know. His computer’s here, I don’t know where he is. Russell: His computer’s here. We’ll make fun of him when he gets back. Dana: Of course he’s probably skipped out early. Okay, what are you glad you did and wouldn’t change, business wise? Russell: Biggest thing I’m glad I did, and this took me 12 years before I did it, was actually bringing in partners. I was first 12 years like, “No, I’m Russell. I’m the guy who started this business, blah, blah, blah.” So because of that, you could hire people, but that’s it. Clickfunnels came around, Todd and I sat down and brainstormed the whole thing with Clickfunnels and he’s like, “Hey, I’m only going to do this if we can be partners instead of like an employee.” And I was just like, ugh. And the prideful Russell was like, “No, I’m not…” but then I was like, witnessing my whole business crashing, I’d been humbled a lot. I was like, “You know what, let’s do it.” And it transformed everything. So grateful for that, and I think if I was ever to start a company again, I think my first step before everything, would be assembling my Avengers team, or my Justice League team, whatever you want to call it, before it got started. I need the best in the world of these 5 spots. I gotta identify, here’s the 5 or 6 people, the things we need and I’d go and spend the first year just recruiting those people and getting them in place, then create the thing. Instead of starting as an entrepreneur and hiring employee one and employee two, it’s so much faster just to go the other way around. Dana: Awesome. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever sent in the mail? Russell: Physical mail? Dana: Mmmhmm Russell: I don’t have mine, but I’m going to tell you my friends story because it’s the craziest ever. Dana: I think I know it but.. Russell: Did I tell you this already? So my friend, he pooped in a box and then he mailed it, and apparently it’s a federal offense to send poop. He did it at college and the college mail room got it and smelled it, and he actually got expelled from Brigham Young University, but it never went through the mail. But apparently it’s a federal offense to mail poop. Dana: Wow, so it got intercepted before it departed from BYU campus? Russell: It could have been bad. Dana: Wow. Okay, so I don’t recommend that. Russell: I think the weirdest thing I’ve ever mailed, not mailed but it was like pizza, I’ve done this a lot of times, called up a pizza delivery place wherever a guys at and deliver like 10 pizzas at once. Stuff like that. Dana: yeah, just to get people’s attention. Russell: Yeah, it works good. Dana: Love it. What’s something that having a team relieves you from? Russell: It lets me, like right now with Clickfunnels people ask me, “How do you keep up with the software?” I’m like, I don’t. I use it and I complain and that’s all I do. And that team does everything. So I don’t have to worry about that. I only have to focus on the part I like, which is the marketing. And that’s all I have to, I get to stay within my unique ability and not the blend of all other things. And I think that’s the key of, in fact, James P. Friell if he were here, he’d quote some famous old guy who said something that was really cool. But the division of labor, something, something. There’s the quote, he can find it for us. Basically letting me do my unique ability and having every other person do their unique ability as opposed to other things. Mandy, when she started coaching with us, it was really cool. She gets to focus on the coaching of it. At first I was like, “Okay and then do this and this and this.” And then she struggled. The administration of it wasn’t very good. Melanie is amazing at administration, how about Melanie help Mandy, and now it runs awesome. And Melanie is the most amazing person at that in the world. So it’s like, everyone has a good and unique ability, whereas I used to try to bring someone in a role and give them 30 things to do, because I thought they should all be able to 30 things. When they did one thing with their unique ability and everything else just sucked. I did a podcast on this a little while ago, but I think the reason is because as entrepreneurs, we start the business initially and we have to do all 30 things, and we suck at most of them, but because we have so much brute force, we have success. And then we hire people, expect them to do 30 things like we did, and that’s the wrong way to look at it. You bring someone to do the one thing and be the best at that. They take that piece away from you and do it a million times better and then you can keep doing that. That’s what gives me the ability to do that, just focus on my unique ability and just nothing else. Dana: Love it. I reserved 30 second timeslot for you to give a shameless plug to something you’d like to sell, starting now. Russell: Hey everybody, welcome to the pitch section of the Decade in the Day. I would really like to sell, I have nothing else to sell these guys. I kind of want to do….I got nothing man, I don’t even know. Oh I know what we can do! Okay, you see this book, it’s pretty cool. This book I’m not going to sell, but we just wrote a book called Network Marketing Secrets for MLMer’s, and it’s exactly this thin and it’s got cartoons like this in it. It’s so awesome. So that’s going to go live in like a week and a half, so you guys should go buy that, even if you’re not in network marketing. Just to support me and to funnel hack me. Dana: Awesome, love it. How do they get it? Is there even a URL yet? Russell: There will be networkmarketingsecrets.com. Dana: go there. Okay, dude that was actually really good off the cusp like that. Well done. I should have given you a heads up. Okay, now I have reserved myself 30 seconds for a shameless plug. Mine’s more rehearsed. Go. So all the time, people ask me, literally all the time, “Dana, how do you sell a book for $2,000 when everybody else sells them for $20 bucks? How do you charge $20 grand for something that other people charge $500 for? How do you make so much money as a goat farmer with only 4 goats in your herd?” and I’m just like, dude, it’s simple. It’s the Dream 100. If you haven’t had a chance, or if you don’t know what the Dream 100 is, go get Chet Holmes Ultimate Sales Machine book. If you do and you’re ready to just go hog wild in it and explode your business, then go get the Dream 100 book. Russell: Where do you get the Dream 100 book, Dana? Dana: Dream100.com. Okay, cool. Russell: What’s the price on it, is it still….? Dana: It’s $2 grand, well, unless you find the secret link where you can get it free plus shipping. But yeah… Russell: Is the secret link dream100.com? Dana: forward slash free. Don’t share it. Oh boy. What’s the biggest domino you tip over every day? Russell: Dang, these are good questions. Every day? For me now, it’s making sure that my team all has what they need to get done what they’re doing.  I look into my role now, it’s less of me doing things and more of me coaching people who are doing things. Making sure that everyone has the ability to run in the morning, so they’re not waiting on the direction. You know what I mean? And we have a lot of east coast people, so before I go to bed at night, I try to make sure east coast people have what they have, so when they wake up 2 hours before I do, they can start running. That’s the biggest thing. Dana: Awesome, that’s great. I heard the internet speed in Boise is capped at 1.5 Megabits per second. Is that really true? If so, how can such a successful tech company be headquartered there? Russell: Is that true, Melanie? Do you know? Melanie: I have no idea. Russell: I have no idea. We do get angry though, often at it. Is that really true? Dana: I have no idea. I’m in a much more rural area, so I doubt it. I just published my 5th earth shattering book for entrepreneurs and sellers, should I keep writing more and put them on the shelf for a while to collect dust and do nothing at all with, the hundreds of hours invested in them, or start promoting and sell them? That’s a jab at myself because you called me out on the last mastermind. Russell: No I think, what’s funny though, at the last mastermind is where I had my big epiphany too, of focusing on the value ladder, and then all our creativity should be focused on the front end of the value ladder, bringing people in. I spent almost every day since then, trying to get the rest of my value ladder in place. I’ve killed two businesses that both made over a million dollars a year, because they didn’t fit in the value ladder. So I took that to heart and hopefully you have as well. But I think that’s it. You can keep creating stuff, but as long as there’s the back end to support it. Dana: Love it. The only other time I went to Orlando Florida, my fiancé ended up coming home pregnant. Should we put out a PSA to warn couples traveling there for Funnel Hacking Live that there’s something in the air down there? Woman: Did you hear Melanie’s laugh? Russell: Melanie’s dying over there. Are we doing a wedding when we get down there this time too, so it could be, the first time you got pregnant, the second time you got married? Dana: I got people lobbying for it right now. It’s going to become a hashtag, yeah. Okay, I’m just going to skip to the good ones. I read about a story about a farmer who was visiting your house, that tripped into your pool, in the pitch black, and fell flat out on your pool cover and nearly ripped it apart, and scared all of your children in the process. Is that true? Russell: It is so true. I wish the camera would have been rolling for that, because it was amazing. We have a pool color that’s the same color as the cement around it, and it was dark outside. So Dana goes and walks right to the pool cover and it’s like woosh. And my kids are like, “No!” it was amazing. Dana: Oh man. Okay, finishing up here. Will you sell me your domain name Dream100secrets.com please, you’re not even using it. Russell: Do I own that one? Dana: Yeah, you’re not using it though. I could use it. Russell: I might be up for that. Definite maybe, definite maybe. Dana: Just think about it. Okay, well I’ve exhausted all the good ones. Unless there’s any good ones in the chat. Russell: Did we check the chat? I have no idea. Woman: Everyone’s going crazy. Russell: Everyone’s just laughing at you. Woman: “Loving this.” “This is amazing.” “This is gorgeous.” Russell: No good questions. Dana: That’s alright, unless you have anything for me? Russell: Let me think. When are you launching the super funnel? Actually, did I tell you what we called it inside our office now, for us? Dana: This is going to be good. Russell: Which board is it on? There it is. This is called Project Mother Funnel. This is our Mother Funnel that sends people all the way through our value ladder in the shortest period of time possible, in the most exciting way possible. AKA, Project Mother Funnel. My question for you, with your new value ladder and multiple front ends, when is your Project Mother Funnel all going live? I’m holding you accountable. We gotta cover up that wall. Dana: I know, I wish I could show you through that wall. It’s still there. I’m going to say ASAP, how’s that. Russell: I love it. I’m getting this done by my birthday, March 8th. It’s my birthday present to myself. Can you get yours done by March 8th? Dana: I’ll do it. And what’s the bet then? Who has to do what? Woman: That’s how you motivate Dana. It’s not money. Russell: That’s good. Let’s see, I has to do with wedding or goats or both. Dana: Yep. Dave: If you lose, Dana, you get married at Funnel Hacking Live. Russell: He wants that though. Dana: I actually do. Russell: They want a beach wedding. So on the beach we could do it. Dana: We could bring the beach to us. Russell: I have sand, there’s sand in Boise. We could bring it in the room. It’d be a pain but it’d be worth it. Dana: How about you have to bring a goat to your office for a day, if you don’t hit yours. And I have to sleep with my goats for a night. Dave: You’d enjoy that though… Russell: Yeah, there’s different levels of that. Dana: There we go…I have to….Don’t knock it until you try it guys, geez. Russell: How about this, if you get the whole thing live by my birthday I may be willing to sell you Dream100secrets.com, if not I’m launching a competitor product, I’m going to take you out. Dana: Geez. This is going to be a nasty smear campaign. Okay, deal. I take the deal. Russell: That’s awesome. Dana: What happens if you don’t get it by March 8t? Woman: Oh, he will. Russell: Goat for a day, I’m in on that. Dana: Okay, that’d be actually a good episode. Alright, thank you guys. I appreciate you. Russell: Thank you Dana, you’re awesome, man. Have a good weekend.

Parents—Help Your Children Become “Wise for Salvation”

[From ws17/12 p. 18 – February 12-18] “From infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation.” 2 Timothy 3:15 At least the organization is more upfront with their purpose with this article than with many. It is not primarily to “help your children be wise for salvation“, but rather, as alluded to by the question for paragraphs 1 & 2, to help “children wanting to take the steps of dedication and baptism.”  It would be more truthful if they added “because of strong emotional pressure from peers, parents and the Organization”. This is aside from the issue of whether a formal dedication is required (discussed at length here) since Matthew 28:19b says nothing about vows and dedication but instead speaks only of baptism followed by actions to observe Jesus' commandments. We then find another tweak in the NWT which changes the meaning of the verse. Matthew 28:19 should read “make disciples of all the nations“, not “make disciples of people of all the nations”. Why is this subtle change wrong? Because it changes the emphasis with which most witnesses read this scripture. The focus goes on “disciples of people” instead of “disciples of all the nations”.  The Greek word here translated “nations” is ‘ethnos’ which means “gentiles, people joined by similar customs and culture.” Children are still learning customs and culture; only adults can be said to be truly joined by similar customs and culture. Did John the Baptist baptise any children? The baptism of children is not mentioned in Scripture. Only the baptism of adults fits the context. (See Luke 3:21; Matthew 3:13; Mark 1:4-8; John 1:29.) When did Jesus, the Son of God, get baptised?  Not as a child, but as a full-grown man of 30. (Luke 3:23)  If baptism is so important at such an early age, then why did Jesus Christ not set the example and get baptized when he was a child?  Why did he not encourage the baptism of children? What is the difference between infant and child baptism? Very little. Both have little to no understanding of the gravity of the step they are taking. An infant is not even aware he is being baptized.  He has no say in the matter.  Does a child make the decision of his or her own free will?  Usually, a strong emotional persuasion is exerted by parents, either wittingly or unwittingly, to motivate the child whose natural, inborn desire is to please his mother and/or father.  Most children change their outlook on life drastically during their teen years. The Insight book makes the following comment on Baptism: “That Christian baptism required an understanding of God’s Word and an intelligent decision to present oneself to do the revealed will of God was evident.”  -- (it-1 p253 par. 13) Most countries of the world do not consider a child to be old enough to make important decisions in life until aged 16, 18, or 21, depending on the nature of the decision. Why should becoming a member of a religion with its requirements be any different?  We should bear in mind that Jehovah's Witnesses are not baptising their children in the Christ, but rather, in the Organization.  JW Baptism means being willing to conform to all the rules, tenets and policies of the Organization, whether these conform to Scripture or not.[i]  Few children will realize what they are getting into.  (Indeed, few adults do either.)  The same things said about infants in the Insight book article on baptism (it-1 p253 para 18) apply to children and most teenagers.  How many under the age of say, 16, understand God’s word (let alone organization policy) enough to make an intelligent decision? Finally Acts 8:12 clearly states that “they proceeded to get baptized, both men and women.” Note the absence of children. Paragraph 2 attempts to dismiss any concerns on the part of parents. It does this in part by implying that concerns that the children may later leave ‘the way of truth’ should not stop them getting baptized. However,

From the arms of a martial arts instructor to a Russian yoga teacher, all while mourning the loss of her mom and renewing herself, Francesca shares her journey which has led her to teaching and coaching others worldwide. And at the end of this episode I'll share with you a tiny food that is a big powerhouse for helping fight depression as well as balancing hormones. Our guest, Francesca Gentillé I am very excited to be joined here today by Francesca Gentillé, who is an initiated shaman in 4 traditions, a clinical sexologist, she's an empowered aging specialist, and a relationship counselor. She has published, appeared on television and also teaches all over the world. Francesca has an incredible story to share with us today as well as a really generous gift just for listeners of Clean Food, Dirty Stories, which we'll share with you later. First though, let's get to the story. So Francesca welcome to the Clean Food, Dirty Stories podcast! I'm really excited to have you here today! Francesca: I am so delighted to be here Barbara. Barbara is also one of my favorite people in the world; creative, talented, big hearted. Me: Well we've had a lot of adventures together. We have enough stories to fill up an entire season of a podcasts all by ourselves. But for today's story I know that like me you grew up with depression. Also, you had some quite heavy food intolerances where you may have felt like you were almost in the wrong kind of family. So can you tell us a bit about that? Francesca's story Francesca: Yes absolutely. I was raised in a very loud, periodically, emotionally volatile, creative, dynamic, great cook Italian family, an Italian American family. And my mother was bipolar: it was the worst of times and the best of times, and of course they were cooking Italian. So there were lots of pastas and wonderful homemade pizzas and canola. Me: Sounds like heaven. Francesca: It was on the one hand beautiful and so tasty but I would always feel tired and I would feel depressed and they would say in the family that I was always sleeping. They'd say "Why is she so sensitive?" Enter the food intolerances I think some of our sensitivities are signs of being a shaman and but on the other hand I think some of the sensitivity was exacerbated by the food intolerances. And I didn't know this until many years later when a friend of mine was reading The Body Ecology Diet for candida yeast infection that wouldn't go away. She said that when she started doing the diet her yeast infection not only went away, but within two weeks her body pain went away and within a year she lost thirty pounds. And it was the body pain that I that I kind of tuned into and I decided to try it and as I tried it I realized that my body wasn't hurting. Suddenly I felt like I had more energy and I also felt like my mood was stabilized. Yes, a huge difference. Me: So what food did you cut out for that? What were you intolerant to? Francesca: I was intolerant to gluten. Me: Wow! So Italian food was a big no, no. Francesca: All the breads have lots of gluten. So all the pastas all of that is gluten. We eat that and I was also intolerant to cow dairy; so lactose basically. Me: Well so cheese. Francesca: Cheese, and I could have a little goat or a little sheep but in general they were cooking with cow cheese. And so those were two things that were death to my body and my immune system and really I think creating that leaky gut syndrome for me too. Cutting out the bad stuff Me: I know that you said that later on you solved all of that. So besides cutting out gluten actually what other foods did you cut out? Francesca: Well eventually, I have to say I'm somebody who does my life in like small steps. I'm not someone who has created success by changing my whole life overnight, whether that's in relationships or whether that's in business or whether that's and in food. Normally I'll try one little thing and then try another little thing. Me: Sounds like me. Francesca: At first it was gluten and dairy but I was still eating processed, you know like quinoa pasta and millet bread. And then eventually I went on a two week kind of cleanse where it was no processed flours at all; some grains but no processed flours. No sugar, no caffeine, no dairy of any kind and lots of vegetables - cooked and raw. A little bit of grains that might be cooked and then a small amount of either fish or chicken, but lots of vegetables everyday. Many more than I had normally done in any given day and some fruits. And I found in two weeks that I started to feel better and I found in a few months that even though I actually hadn't lost any weight which was something that I wanted but even though I hadn't lost any weight people would start to say "What have you done to your face? You look younger, you look radiant!" It was all these fruits and vegetables and wonderful fruit and juice smoothies. Then within a year I was down to my ideal weight and I just felt amazing! Me: Wow, that's fantastic! Francesca: I did it the healthy way. Enter the martial arts instructor Me: So then I guess you looked so radiant and so amazing that the martial arts instructor found you right? You mentioned that - how did you meet him and what happened? Francesca: Well in this process it wasn't at the complete end of the steps towards health. But in this process of getting more and more healthy, I am also a teacher of relationships and sexuality, and I teach recovery from trauma, and I teach about tantra in a healing way for couples. So while I was doing this, this gentleman came to one of my classes. I felt some energy between us, but at the same time I had learned that sometimes the man I'm most attracted to is the one that I need to walk away from. My animal instincts that get very attracted to people do not tell me that that person is honest. They do not tell me that that person is good. They only say that we have compatible histo immune systems. I thought I should walk away and I did. But he kept writing to me and one day the email wouldn't work. I tried so many different ways but it would not go through. He had given me his phone number so I called him and I said "Do you know if there's a problem with your email?" and he said "Maybe you're just supposed to talk to me." A beautiful relationship So we started to talk and it developed and it really became a very beautiful and magical relationship. He had been studying Dzogchen Buddhism which is a very spiritual form of tantra for twenty five years. We had a lot in common in terms of core values, and it became a relationship which I think of as a soul mate relationship of the best kind, where we were passionate and compassionate. In the six years we were together we never yelled at each other, we never raised our voices. That's not to say we never had a problem or a disagreement, but we were able to work through those disagreements while staying in a centered, mature, adult state. It was such a grace. When I would walk into the room we'd each take a breath like "ah, now I'm safe, now I'm home". And even though he swore he would never get married because he'd been married twice before and they were these terrible relationships, in four years he asked me to marry him. Are you sure you want to marry me? I always knew he would. Although I thought it was going to take a decade, but I always felt like "yes, he's going to ask me to marry him. He just needs to heal a little bit from these past relationships". So when he asked me to marry him after four years I was shocked. He said "You're not saying yes!" and I said "Well I-I didn't expect you to ask me to marry you yet!" I said "Are you sure you want to marry me? Do you know my flaws? Sometimes I'm messy and I don't clean up right away". He said "Yes, I know that". I said "Oh and I love pretty things and sometimes I can kind of over shop and I'm not good at saving money". He said "Yes I know that". So I was like going through the list of all my flaws and he said, "Why do you think it took four years?" He said "I actually wanted to marry you sooner, but I wanted to make sure that I could hold space for your imperfections". And so I said yes, but we decided to wait until my son graduated from high school. That was a few more years down the road. Good news So you know, things were going well, but his business was failing. He was a full time martial artist, he taught martial arts to school children and adults. And it really wasn't financially successful and that was very hard on his heart. It was very challenging for his self-esteem. One day he came to me and he said "Francesca I have some good news and some bad news". And I said "Tell me the good news!" He said the good news is that a friend of his was selling a fitness center, a gym in town in his town with all the workout equipment etcetera. John said "If I combine fitness and martial arts, maybe that will be the ticket for success". I said "Honey, that's great!" Because of course we want our partners to be happy and fulfil their life's mission. I said "You should do that, what's the bad news?" And bad news His martial arts studio would be open from about 8 or 9 in the morning till 9 at night with some breaks in the day. It would get very quiet until the kids came after school. So it had a certain pace that had some spaciousness in it. And you know 8 or 9 in the morning till 9 at night, although still a long day, is not terrible. He said that this fitness studio was open from 4 in the morning till 11 o'clock at night. Because he was investing his money into it, he felt that for at least the first maybe 4 to 6 months he needed to be there. He needed to see how it was being run so that he could try to change it and make improvements. And he said "For approximately 4 to 6 months sweetheart I'll be getting 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night and I really won't have any bandwidth". Well, be careful of what you say to the universe! I said "Oh don't worry, our relationship is so strong, we can handle this". And 5 days later... Within 5 days of that my mother died. 5 days after he signed the papers and put the money into the investment. You never know how you're going to respond to the death of a parent or someone that's very, very close to you. You don't know until it actually happens. And I adored my mother but I was also afraid of my mother. I was conflicted and although I had a lot of anger towards her while she was alive, I made a choice never to bring that anger to her. As she got older her bipolar got worse and she eventually had Alzheimer's, and it just isn't appropriate to bring these kinds of unresolved issues to people who are mentally ill. Me: But then you have to solve them for yourself, right? How do you do that? The grieving process Francesca: And all of those unresolved emotions were there. All the anger and rage that I never expressed to her was there. And then the grieving, because since about twenty five till when she died when I was fifty I had chosen to mostly be separate from her even though we'd been very close when I was young. So I was not only grieving that she was now dead, I actually was grieving the twenty five years that I had chosen to be separate from her. Me: And did you regret those twenty five years? Francesca: Yes and no, because if I had to go back I would probably still make the same decision because she didn't feel safe to me. On the other hand, for the little girl like when I was very young and she was a bit healthier, probably from you know birth till about thirteen we were very, very close. And so the little girl in me just missed her mommy. I would be at home alone curled up into a little fetal ball rocking and this little voice would come out of me saying, "I don't understand!" It was this little girl who just didn't understand that her mother was gone and didn't understand that she would never have an opportunity to be close to her. I think the magical child always hoped in some way that they would reconcile. So yeah I was very shattered. My son would later say that it was like I was missing for two years. Me: How old was your son? Francesca: My son was... I think he was either, maybe about fourteen, something like that. Me: Oh wow! Okay, so old enough to know that yeah there was some heavy stuff going on. Walking in the underworld Francesca: And yeah, those two years in many ways are a blur. I would eventually end up going to two therapists a week for over a year, a year and a half. And I really ended up feeling like I was later like I was walking with my mother in the underworld for that time. Me: Oh wow! Francesca: Yes, it was very deep, it felt very profound. Me: That must have been very helpful, very healing. Francesca: Where I am now, I'm at peace with her. I feel her love for me, I feel my love for her. It's like we've completed what we were meant to complete in this life, and I feel like I've known her many lifetimes and I'll probably know her again. Me: Yep, I'm sure you will. The birth of a crazy idea Francesca: But in this time period where so much of my energy is now in the underworld or so much of my little girl is grieving and crying while my adult self is missing...In that time period John is getting three or four hours sleep a night. He needed me more than he ever needed me and I couldn't be there emotionally. And then I needed him more than I ever needed him, and he couldn't be there for me emotionally. Neither one of us were thinking particularly straight. But we were noticing that we were getting more and more depleted, more and more raw. It's almost like when you haven't had enough sleep and your mind is just starting to think sort of crazy, and you almost feel like you're shaking because you're under-slept. Both of us were like that because I wasn't sleeping well with the grieving. Me: Well and you do literally start to lose your mind when you lose sleep, when you don't have enough sleep, right? I mean that's a proven thing. Francesca: Exactly, and we came up with this crazy idea which is "We need more support, we need more energy in the relationship. I know! We'll open up the relationship in a 'don't ask, don't tell' model". Me: Wow! So can you explain? Because some people might not know what that is. How not to navigate an open relationship Francesca: I'm not against open relationships or polyamorous relationships or swinging or anything else. And I think there are ways to have open relationships that are beautiful and ways to do them terribly. Just like there are ways to be monogamous that are beautiful and ways to be monogamous that are awful. I mean it's not the design of the relationship that is the grace or the problem. It's really "Are we centered? Transparent? Collaborative? Compassionate? Do we have good communication skills?" That's what's going to make any design better or worse, depending on who we are bringing to that relationship. Well one of the things as a relationship counsellor that I would say is that if you're going to have an open relationship it's actually healthy to be transparent, to reveal to your partner, to not lie, to not hold things back, to be able to collaborate so you still feel like you're a partnership. So even though you might be dating someone else, or going to a party and canoodling with someone else, you still feel like your home partnership is your best friend, is that place that you're the closest to, is the person that you're revealing everything to. And I think it's very dangerous to try to do this without revealing to each other. It's very easy when we start withholding information, whether about sex or anything else. Sex, money, you name it; when we start to withhold information, it's easy to build resentment. So it's easy to start feeling more and more separated. Now this is a crazy notion that I never would have agreed to in my right mind, but I wasn't in my right mind. Where's my primary care support? So we agreed and we weren't living together at this time. We were living in different houses but we'd see each other every weekend and talk every day. And he ended up having a couple of, you know, kind of flings. Things that were a little lighter, it was fun, it was sexy but it wasn't particularly emotionally depthful. But I felt - oh my God! Barbara, I felt like I was going crazy. I felt like I just wanted someone to hold me when I cried. And I wanted someone to hold me in the night when I felt so frightened and alone. For me, I didn't want just a little sexy fun fling. I felt like I needed what they call in the hospitals in America 'primary care support'. Like when someone is in the intensive care unit and they need twenty four hour care. I felt like that was me. Enter the Russian yoga therapist And there was a man that had been a student of mine who was very, very alluring, kind of reddish brown copper hair, big almond brown eyes, slender...He was a Russian yoga therapist and massage therapist. Me: You already got me intrigued! Francesca: With long hair...and he and I started to spend more time together and he was being emotionally supportive. And when this open relationship design came into being I went to him and I said, "What do you think?" Well he was all over it! Me: Literally! Francesca: Oh my God all over it and all over me! I remember a night, I think it might have been the night where I said you know, we've opened the relationship and we could get together where I think he said like he couldn't get out of this chain link fence, he was somehow locked in. He actually climbed the fence, and he ripped his clothes! You know, this person who's just like running to try to get to you... Me: Like in a movie, right? Francesca: And it was the beginning of...of course it was very passionate in the beginning and we were, you know, making love at night and in the middle of the night, and in the morning, and we were traveling together...within a month I had actually moved this guy in! Me: Wow! Did John know at that point? Francesca: No because we were doing the 'don't ask, don't tell' model! Me: Oh! Oh my God...okay! Francesca: Yes! Life with a sexy fitness coach And this guy was this primary care support where he would cook for me, and he was someone who cooked very vegan, very healthy. So he would cook for me. He was also a fitness coach so in the mornings he would have me do yoga stretches. And it was in a way it was exactly what I needed. I could tell that this was moving too fast and that John... I couldn't keep doing 'don't ask, don't tell'. When 'don't ask don't tell' becomes 'you'd better tell' So I visited John and I said I need to talk to you. I said "I have gone and not just dated someone, I've not just had sex, but I've gone very, very deep. I've formed another primary relationship and I've already moved this person in". And of course John was shocked and hurt but once again he was getting three or four hours of sleep a night. He just didn't have the bandwidth to even talk about it. It was just...we tried to talk, but he didn't have the bandwidth, and I didn't have my normal skill sets. I'm normally quite erudite, normally very adept in language and communication and in graceful language and communication, and I wasn't. Within I would say maybe a couple of months, John called me and he asked me if we were having unprotected sex. And we were. John said, "Were you planning to tell me?" I said "Yes". He said "When were you planning to tell me?" And I said "You know, I think the next time we were going to get together". John said "Well, it's over". Another death to grieve And then I was not only grieving the death of my mother, but I was grieving the death of the relationship with my soul mate. It really was the best relationship I'd ever had and it's now been ten years and it will be best relationship I've had so far; hope springs eternal, but so far - and it was another shattering for me. So now I'm with this seductively charming Russian yoga master, and it seemed like 'well maybe you're supposed to be with him'. Is this my stuff or his stuff? But something starts to happen where I start to feel more and more insecure. And at first you know maybe I'm thinking 'well it's because I'm grieving' or 'it's because I'm not centered' But I've come to find out over the years - I now have a data collection taken from many relationships - that in the relationships where I feel the most calm, I am with someone who is honest, with good integrity and who is in fact trustworthy. And when I'm in a relationship with people who are lying to me or withholding or cheating in some way, I start to feel more and more insecure. Me: Well that makes sense, right? Francesca: There is an exception to this and usually whenever I start to feel a little insecure, possessive and obsessive in a relationship, I make sure to get counselling. I make sure to get the support so that I'm coming back to the center and I've separated out what are my issues from my childhood versus what is my energetic intuition saying about this relationship. Me: Yep I get it. When a healthy influence turns to dysfunction Francesca: And so sometimes we do have some of our own issues from the past. But with all the therapy and everything...One week the therapists both said - even though they weren't talking to each other - in the same week they both said "I think you need to look at your relationship. I think you're not just grieving and I think that there are some things that might be unhealthy in your relationship" and they both said it interestingly enough the same week. So with this guy, something would just snap in him and he would begin to yell at me. He'd yell at me and shame me and denigrate me - not just for like three minutes, but I would time it. For fifteen minutes, for twenty minutes, for twenty five minutes, for thirty five minutes. Me: Right, so super unhealthy. Francesca: Super unhealthy! and I would tell him, you know, "I'm grieving, this is not okay, I can't handle this". It would be fine for a little while and then he'd go back to it again. Very emotionally abusive. I didn't actually find out until after we broke up that he had been... we also ended up teaching together and he had gone to some of the students in our classes after he found out that they had been molested as children, after he found out that they had terrible family backgrounds and it was hard for them to understand their boundaries. After he found that out, he would seduce them. Me: Whoa! He should be in jail! Seriously! Francesca: Yeah! I didn't find this out until after we broke up and then ... Me: So what did you do? What's the lesson here? Francesca: I tried to let my community know that this person was very, very unhealthy. And you know I did my best to get that information. But it felt terrible, really, really terrible. I had allowed him to stand beside me and teach, I'd actually helped promote him in my community. That's still something periodically that's heavy on my heart. And for me I want to say that I've learned to forgive myself and that's an important part of healing. Me: Oh yeah. Francesca: We can't just beat ourselves up, we have to get the lesson. Like what's the lesson? Part of that lesson - this is very interesting - when my mother died, no one came to visit. What do you do when someone dies? Where I come from back in the center of the United States, it's more farmland, it's more...people are in the same area generation after generation, and when someone dies, your friends show up or your family shows up and they bring you food. They understand that you're not going to want to cook, that you're going to feel sort of out of your body. So people show up and take care of you at least for the first couple of weeks if not longer. When my mother died, no one came to visit. I tried to email and say, you know, my mother has died, I feel very shattered, this is so hard, I'm having so many emotions...and no one came. Tough questions and enlightening answers A couple of months later when I was out in the world I would see my friends and I would say "Do you know that my mother died?" "Yes". "Okay uh...I'm curious, why didn't you stop by? Or why didn't you call?" And what I heard really highlighted the wounding that we have in our culture around grieving. So what they said was, "Well you're such an independent woman, I thought you would want to do it yourself". Well this is weird because you know, in most cultures in the world you grieve in community. You don't grieve by yourself! That's such a weird modernization. We're meant to do this together. And so I thought 'hmmm, that's a wound of culture that they thought I needed to grieve by myself'. Some people said that they were afraid of death. I understood that and I could have compassion for it, but I thought that's another wound of culture. Because death is so removed. It's in the hospital, it's far away, it's in a hospice. We don't see death like we would have seen it a hundred years ago, a couple hundred years ago where death was a part of life. You learn to work with it. Once again you learn. People would say "I wouldn't know what to say, I didn't want to make it worse". I would say "Well, let me give you an option. One possible thing to say is 'I'm so sorry for your loss'". Me: Yes exactly! Francesca: Fairly safe, but they literally didn't know that! Enter the life-changing answer So the answer that started to change my life was when people said, "Francesca of course I love you, of course you're important to me, but I thought that you're so well loved that you would have people that were closer to you than me. People who would be with you". And I said "Well what I think I hear you saying is that you don't realise that you're important to me. That you don't realise that you're actually really close to me". And they said "Yes!" and I thought 'Whose job is it to let you know that you're important to me?' Me: Yours! Francesca: It's my job! But I'm not doing a good job of letting people know that they actually matter to me! When walls no longer serve When I saw that I thought 'Oh my God! I have a wall around me'. It's the wall that I built to protect myself. I built it brick by brick as a child, as an adolescent, as a young woman. And I built this wall to try to protect me from being hurt by my family or being hurt by mean kids or etcetera. But now I realize this wall that has been designed to protect me also keeps people from me and I have spent my life proving my independence and that I can take care of myself. So if I need to move forward in life, the next development in life is to let people in to care for me and to let out, to be vulnerable, to reveal how important you are to me. Me: Wow! That is almost freaky because I had the same realization about the wall about a year ago. And in fact that was one of the reasons why I started this podcast! Because I thought, 'What way can I start to share some vulnerability with the world?' How can I start to yeah, just you know, tear down the wall, basically! So that is really freaky because I didn't know that that was going to come up today. Wow! Francesca's gift We have to wrap things up pretty soon but before we do that, I mean what an incredible story! I want to put links obviously to what you do in the show notes. But before we get to the food tips for this episode I know that you have very generously offered a special gift for our podcast listeners. So can you say something about that? Francesca: I have! You know, all of the suffering becomes a grace when we learn from it and in that we can help others. So if anybody's listening and they've suffered a lot, on the other side of that suffering is who you are as a healer. I want to offer my support to all of the listeners and to say that I'm happy to offer you a gift session by phone or Skype. This will be approximately forty five minutes to an hour. You would email relationshipdiva@gmail.com and put in the subject, 'gift session'. I'm happy to collaborate with you and really offer my support for our time together. Me: Wow! That is awesome Francesca, thank you so much. I know that people will take advantage of that because I mean you've got so much to offer in so many areas. Around sexuality and relationships and even, you know, life's journey and the whole thing. So thank you so much for that. I really appreciate it. It's been super, super having you on the podcast! So thank you again so, so much! A food that helps you fight depression and helps with balancing hormones So, I mentioned at the beginning of this episode that I'd share with you a tiny but amazing food that can help fight depression as well as help with balancing hormones. And that food is... Flax seeds! Benefits of flax seeds, including balancing hormones Flax seeds are amazing and if you aren't eating them yet, you've got to get yourself some. The reason they can help fight depression is because they're high in omega-3 fatty acids. But they also can help with balancing hormones. I'll link to a study in the show notes that seems to say that eating flax seeds may help prevent some forms of cancer. Flax seeds are also high in fiber and low in carbs, and they help reduce sugar cravings, they improve your skin and hair...I mean there are just too many benefits to mention here, so I'll link to an article or two in the show notes if you'd like to read more about flax seeds. How you eat flax seeds Now, how do you eat flax seeds? Well, some people buy flaxseed oil and pour that over salads and veggies. What I like to do though is buy the whole seeds and then grind them quickly in a coffee grinder or high-speed blender. John Chow is the original dot com mogul -- as well as being an author, speaker, blogger, father, and entrepreneur. He rocketed onto the blogging scene when he showed the income power of blogging with a case study to see what it would take to make $3,000 a month. In this conversation, John walks us through many of the details involved in how he achieved this overwhelming success. The interview is full of invaluable tips and insights on various aspects of how to succeed in making money online. Find Out More About John Here: JohnChow.com@JohnChow on TwitterJohn Chow on FacebookJohn Chow on YouTube In This Episode: [01:37] - John shares his biggest aha moment, which was when he discovered that you can make money online. [05:14] - How long did it take John to go from making $0 to making $10,000 a month on his site? He answers, then walks us through the journey of his site through the dot com boom and bust. [08:55] - After Adsense came along, John had a bit of learning curve in figuring out ad placement, colors, and so on. After four to five months, he was making good money again. [09:47] - John talks about the social media boom, which was when things started taking off for him again. He explains how he got into blogging, and talks about being called out on talking about making money by blogging when his blog wasn’t making any money. [13:05] - In response to being called out, John made a case study involving monthly posts about his blog’s income. The goal was to make $3,000 a month on two hours a day. [16:18] -  John explains why other bloggers are able to post their monthly income still, even though he needed to stop due to requests from his advertisers. [17:10] - John stopped using AdSense after about a year and a half. He then explains why he decided to focus on making more money per visitor instead of getting more visitors. [19:08] - We learn more about the products that John has on his site now. [20:26] - John talks more about affiliate marketing. [21:58] - Did John create a course specifically about email marketing using AWeber, or was it more generically about email marketing? After answering, John talks about his choice not to disclose his affiliation with AWeber in his first ebook, before there were stringent guidelines on doing so. [24:34] - John gives us some sense of approximately how much of his income is from affiliate marketing versus his own products. He then discusses adding higher-price items without increasing his time per day. [26:52] - John still works around two hours a day on average. [27:35] - Is this podcast part of John’s two hours a day, or is it in addition to that time? [28:45] - John walks us through how he monetizes his videos. [30:18] - What does John recommend as a next step for someone who is using AdSense? [32:18] - John offers some insight into how to best use AdSense in terms of size, placement, and style. [35:49] - Stephan reveals that his oldest daughter made money on AdSense as a teenager. [37:21] - How often does John recommend blogging to keep up momentum? In his answer, he reveals that he believes his consistency is one of the main keys to his success. [41:28] - Does John theme his days, as recommended by Mike Vardy? Stephan then brings up the concept of having free day, buffer days, and focus days. [43:54] - John sometimes does episodes while he’s driving, he explains. He and Stephan discuss the safety of multitasking this way. [45:32] - Currently, all the traffic to John’s YouTube channel and blog is organic. [47:06] - What is John doing from an SEO standpoint? As he answers, he talks about another (somewhat inadvertent) case study he did on whether you can build a blog without Google. [49:52] - John recommends Affiliate Summit as his favorite conference. The book he’s currently reading is No Excuses! by Brian Tracy. A daily devotional through the recorded words Jesus spoke while He walked alongside us. Our website http://alittlewalkwithgod.com. Today's Scripture Focus Luke 7:24-28 devotional summary Did John fully understand the message He shared with those around him? I'm not sure he did. I stand on this side of the cross' history. You and I have knowledge John and Jesus' disciples didn't have when they received the message John shared. I share the message of repentance and Jesus' forgiveness often. I try to share it with you in this podcast every day. But do I fully understand the message I share? Not on this side of eternity's curtain. There is so much I will not understand about how the triune Godhead works, yet I still believe it is true. I do not understand how Jesus' blood, shed 2,000 years ago, acts as the payment for the sins I commit today, yet I believe it does when I ask for his forgiveness because I feel the burden of guilt lifted from my heart. I do not understand how God can extend His grace to me when I was His enemy, yet I know He did because I feel His presence in my life every day. There is so much about the message I will not understand until I can sit as Jesus' feet and ask Him about it. But that doesn't mean I don't believe His message isn't true. I know His message is true. I've seen His hand at work. I've felt His presence in my own life and watched Him work His miracles in the lives of others. I know He is God and forgives sins when we ask. I know He can help us live the lives He purposed us to live when we give Him authority over us. I know He can make us greater than we can ever be without Him. What made John so great? He shared the message unfaltering to a world who needed to hear it desperately. Can Jesus make you great as well? You bet He can. Just share what He has done for you. That's the message we are to share with others. He commands us to be His witnesses. So go ahead and start today. Survivor is known for being a game that shines a light on who you really are, deep down at your core. This week, Colton's redemption story appears to have officially come to an end. He made it four days before he fell back into his old ways. The trend so far is for the returning players to score a come from behind win at the Immunity challenge. It may be unlikely for that trend to change unless we get a challenge that is primarily based on brute strength alone. What did you think about Colton's attempt to take control of Galang? Do you think he will quit? Did the Tadhana five make the best choice to target Rachel? Do you think Tyson will take the bait and step in to rescue her? Did John make the right choice to not share the HII clue? Were you sad to see Rupert go? Who will be the next to leave the game? Here are the tribes after episode 2.
