As the host of the "Flourish or Fold: Stories of Resilience" podcast, I've had the privilege of speaking with some truly inspiring individuals. But my recent conversation with New York Times best-selling author Jamie Kern Lima, co-founder and the powerhouse behind IT Cosmetics and the author of the newly released book Worthy: How to Believe You Are Enough and Transform Your Life, was a profound reminder of the indomitable human spirit and the transformative power of self-worth.The Journey to IT Cosmetics: Jamie's story is one of tenacity and belief in oneself against all odds. She shared with us the raw and real challenges she faced while building her now-thriving beauty empire. From pouring every penny into her dream to facing rejection from major retailers, Jamie's path was anything but smooth. Yet, it was her resilience and understanding of self-worth that propelled her forward.Self-Confidence vs. Self-Worth: One of the most enlightening moments of our discussion was Jamie's distinction between self-confidence and self-worth. She explained that self-confidence is often tied to external achievements and can be fleeting. In contrast, self-worth is an internal belief in our inherent value, regardless of our successes or failures. This realization is not just a nuance; it's a fundamental shift in how we perceive ourselves and our potential.Overcoming Low Self-Worth: Jamie opened up about how low self-worth can manifest as self-sabotage, a feeling of emptiness, and a ceiling on our potential. She emphasized the importance of unlearning the lies that lead to self-doubt and embracing the truths that awaken our sense of worthiness. Her message was clear: when we believe in our worth, we unlock our ability to achieve and enjoy fulfillment without the shadow of imposter syndrome.A Mission to Ignite Worthiness: Jamie's dedication to spreading the message of self-worth is unwavering. She's donating 100% of the proceeds from her book to further this cause. Her passion is not just about sharing her story; it's about igniting a change in others, helping them to recognize and embrace their worthiness. The Impact of "Worthy": As we wrapped up our conversation, I couldn't help but feel inspired by Jamie's insights. Her book is not just a memoir; it's a call to action for anyone struggling with self-doubt. It's a testament to the idea that understanding and nurturing our self-worth can lead to a life of greater achievement and satisfaction. As we continue on our own paths, let's carry with us the lessons from Jamie's journey. Let's challenge the self-doubt, embrace our worthiness, and support each other in our quests for fulfillment. Remember, resilience isn't just about bouncing back; it's about growing stronger and more capable in the face of life's inevitable challenges.I encourage you to share this episode with anyone who might benefit from Jamie's message. Whether it's a friend, family member, or a stranger you meet while walking your dog, let's spread the word about the power of self-worth. And for those who are as captivated by Jamie's insights as I was, her book Worthy:How to Believe You Are Enough and Transform Your Life is a must-read.Thank you for joining me on this episode of "Flourish or Fold: Stories of Resilience." In this inspiring episode of "Schmidt List," host Kurt Schmidt welcomes Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal, a distinguished expert on resilience with a background at esteemed organizations like Cigna and Nike.Their conversation revolves around the theme of resilience, with Dr. Taryn debunking the idea that time alone heals, and emphasizing active engagement in our healing processes.Dr. Taryn introduces the novel concept of "cilliance," which signifies discovering our inherent strengths to navigate life's adversities. The episode challenges the misconception that resilience is an external acquisition, advocating instead that it's an innate trait we can cultivate, particularly by embracing vulnerability.Highlighting "real-time resilience," Dr. Taryn discusses the ability to access resilience in the present, not only in hindsight. She suggests that resilience broadens our self-belief, encouraging individuals, especially women, to ambitiously pursue opportunities despite self-doubt.Addressing "fake" against authentic resilience, Dr. Taryn criticizes the "fake it till you make it" approach, promoting a life vision backed by actionable steps. Resilience is metaphorically described as a muscle powered by our dreams, which we need to actively develop. The power of words and expressions, such as how a smile can influence our sense of happiness, is also covered, underscoring the significant impact our language choices have on our psychological states. The duo discusses professional resilience, with Dr. Taryn advising on the importance of establishing boundaries in toxic work environments. A personal story of her handling a stressful parenting moment exemplifies resilience in action, as she decides to respond with composure rather than react with stress, influencing her son's experiences positively.Dr. Taryn clarifies that resilience is not about imperviousness but entails evolving through adversities by learning and integrating the experiences they grant us. Resilience encompasses a gamut of emotions, and effectively managing these emotions is key.Resilience, as per Dr. Taryn, is intrinsic to humanity, a process involving the adoption of skills and practices. Despite personal challenges, including facing a stalker and living with undiagnosed dyslexia, she asserts resilience as a cornerstone for success in life and leadership. In conclusion, Dr. Taryn points listeners to her resources, like her book "The Five Practices of Highly Resilient People," and the pair exchange accolades on their insights and the value of the discussion on the "Schmidt List" podcast.Dr. Taryn's Social Channel Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtarynmarie/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrTarynMarie/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/taryn-marie-stejskal/Twitter: https://twitter.com/drtarynmarie?lang=enTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/discover/dr-taryn-marieYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWy-FDrXXQnEC7poGI-C1_gResilience Leadership Institute (RLI):https://www.resilience-leadership.com/Triumph Anthology: https://www.triumphanthology.com/welcomeRecent interview with NY Weekly Magazine:https://nyweekly.com/coaching/dr-taryn-marie-is-teaching-that-sharing-our-resilience-stories-empowers-transformation/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/schmidt-list-inspiring-leaders--2664825/support.
In this episode of Flourish or Fold, I'm honored to welcome manifestation coach and author Kathleen Cameron. Join us as we talk about her transformation from a nurse to a world-traveling empowerment figure through unwavering faith and manifestation principles. Kathleen shares her journey, emphasizing the importance of profound faith, detachment from outcomes, and surrendering to the universe. The Genesis of a Manifested Life: Kathleen's story is nothing short of inspirational. In September of 2019, she made a pivotal decision to transform her life. As a registered nurse, she was well-acquainted with the healthcare world, but she yearned for something more. Kathleen embarked on a personal experiment, applying the principles of manifestation to her own life. The results were staggering. She transitioned from her nursing career to a life where she travels the world, empowers individuals, and enjoys the luxury she once only dreamed of. Her secret? Unwavering faith and the application of spiritual teachings. The Role of Faith in Manifestation: During our conversation, Kathleen emphasized the significance of faith. She shared how her understanding of spirituality evolved, leading her to recognize a higher power at play. This profound faith became the cornerstone of her manifestation practice, allowing her to transmute her energy into her desires. Kathleen encourages everyone to find their own resonance with a higher power, as this personal connection is crucial to the manifestation process.Cultivating Faith in the Unseen: For those skeptical or new to the concept of manifestation, Kathleen offers a compelling perspective. Faith, she explains, is about believing in the unseen. It's about trusting in the same way we trust gravity or the arrival of a package. Manifestation is about becoming aware of what already exists in the realm of possibility. If you can imagine it, it's within your reach. This belief in the unseen is the bedrock of faith that can lead to tangible results.Detachment and Surrender: The Art of Letting Go: One of the most challenging aspects of manifestation is the desire to control outcomes. Kathleen speaks to the power of detachment and surrender. It's not about needing our desires to materialize; it's about asking for what we want and then allowing the universe to work its magic. This surrender is not a sign of weakness but a profound strength that aligns us with the energy of abundance and prosperity.Personal Growth and Evolving Relationships: Kathleen's journey of manifestation has also deeply impacted her relationships. As she grew in consciousness, her reliance on others for decision-making diminished. She found empowerment from within, which led to the evolution of her friendships, marriage, and other connections. Some relationships flourished, while others naturally faded. Kathleen reflects on the beauty of learning from every relationship and the importance of leading with love and unconditional love for others."The Best of Yourself" and Manifest Toronto: Kathleen's new book, "The Best of Yourself," is a testament to her transformational journey. It's designed to help readers realize their true potential and empower them to embody the best version of themselves daily. Her vision is to guide individuals towards self-love, confidence, and a positive impact on the world. At her recent in-person event, "Manifest Toronto," Kathleen created a space for community, love, and empowerment. She expresses gratitude for the opportunity to serve others and the reciprocal growth that comes from elevating those around her.Debunking Manifestation Myths: Kathleen addresses the misconception that manifestation is separate from spirituality or a higher power. She firmly believes that manifestation is a divine tool and cannot be done without tapping into the energy of the universe or God. She also critiques the "fake it till you make it" approach, advocating for alignment with the energy of one's desires to truly manifest them.My conversation with Kathleen Cameron was a deep dive into the interconnectedness of manifestation, personal growth, and spirituality. Her insights remind us that with profound faith, detachment, and surrender, we can all manifest the life we envision for ourselves. I hope this glimpse into our discussion has inspired you to explore the power of manifestation in your own life. In this episode, I am sharing some takeaways from a book I am reading on resiliency. The book is called “The 5 Practices of Highly Resilient People”, by Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal, and I am only part way through and the concept is so freaking powerful. It starts with asking yourself “what story would people think I was crazy, if they knew about me?” That is the vulnerability story that builds resistance and also builds resiliency. In today's episode we discuss: 1) The practice of vulnerability is a foundational piece of resilience. To allow yourself to be vulnerable is to allow your inside self, your doubts, fears, insecurities and your authentic self to be seen by the outside world. Can you allow it to be consistent, aka, the same person? When it is the same person that the world sees, this is called congruence, so the practice of vulnerability is a lifelong practice of letting our inner and outer world be congruent with each other. 2) The more congruent we can be, the more we can actually handle hard times of challenge without burning up a ton of energy trying to do or be something that we are not. 3) There are 3 main fears that people experience with vulnerability, and Dr. Taryn calls this Vulnerability Bias, and it is the fear that if we let people see our true authentic selves, they will not like us; they might not love us; or they might leave us. This keeps us in a cage that we are in by choice, holding the key and not allowing ourselves out of. Vulnerability has the ability to be a strength and a superpower, instead of a weakness. That is how it becomes a pillar of resiliency and a muscle we are continuously building. It was truly an honor to volunteer my time and donate my best-selling books to be of service to executives in Human Resources.I was so grateful to be able to shares my inspiration for writing The 5 Practices of Highly Resilient People, which was heavily influenced by my experiences working with women in rural areas and individuals with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. All of which truly shaped my unique perspective on resilience. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:Redefining Resilience: Contrary to popular belief, resilience isn't about bouncing back to our previous state. It's about bouncing forward, allowing our experiences to transform us.The Five Essential Qualities of Resilient People: I shared the five practices I've discovered through my extensive research and interviews, which serve as a roadmap for navigating life's challenges. The Power of Vulnerability: Vulnerability isn't about sharing everything with everyone. It's about aligning our inner thoughts and feelings with our outward selves. This alignment is crucial for effective leadership and personal well-being.Overcoming the Vulnerability Bias: We often fear vulnerability, thinking it might lead to rejection. I emphasize the importance of overcoming this bias for authentic and empathetic leadership.Being "Self-Full": I introduce the concept of being "self full" - prioritizing self-care to reach our highest potential. It's about putting on our own oxygen mask first before helping others. My mission is to help individuals and organizations build resilience and well-being, a cause I'm sure we can all get behind. I'm excited for you to listen to this episode and gain some valuable insights into resilience, vulnerability, and self-care. I'd like to remind you about our online course, "Flourish: The Five Practices of Highly Resilient People," available on our website www.resilience-leadership.com. It's a one-on-one tutorial with me, offering hours of content for learning and coaching on the five practices of resilience.Stay tuned for more exciting conversations and remember, resilience is not just about surviving, it's about thriving! I'm thrilled to share with you the latest episode of our podcast, "Flourish or Fold: Stories of Resilience." This time, we had the pleasure of hosting Daniel Pink, the author of the insightful book "The Power of Regret." In our conversation, we delved into the often-avoided topic of regret. Daniel shared his belief that openly discussing our regrets, learning from them, and planning our growth from these experiences is crucial. This aligns perfectly with our mission of sharing resilience stories. We also explored the reality of career paths not meeting expectations. It's a scary realization, but one that requires courage to face. Daniel likened this process to a dimmer switch or a camera focusing - gradual and revealing. We touched on the importance of segregation - seeking firsthand experience from professionals in your desired field. This helps to gain a more accurate understanding of the job, rather than relying on assumptions. Our discussion took a turn towards the concept of transition and the unrealistic expectation of sudden, sharp changes. Life is a gradual process, and waiting for epiphanies is not productive. We then delved deeper into the topic of regret. Daniel explained that negative emotions, including regret, serve a purpose and can help us improve. He shared the four core regrets that exist universally among people, each reflecting our values: foundational regrets (stability), connection regrets (love), moral regrets (goodness), and boldness regrets (growth). We also discussed the distinction between foundational regrets and the other categories. Foundational regrets accumulate over time due to a series of small decisions, while the other regrets often occur in a single moment. Finally, we explored the intersectionality between identifying regrets and resilience, mental health, and well-being. Reflecting on regrets and drawing lessons from them can contribute to resilience. I'm truly grateful for Daniel's insights and his commitment to uncovering new perspectives. "Resilience is the essence of being human, it's intimately and directly connected to our humanity.""We are all both a masterpiece and a work in progress."Welcome to Season 3 of The Flourish or Fold Podcast! As a podcast host, I've had the privilege of engaging in enlightening discussions about resilience, a concept that is often misunderstood. In this first episode, I explore the concept of resilience and introduce the five practices of highly resilient people, a topic that I believe is crucial for personal growth and development, to you, our podcast audience.Resilience: An Inherent Part of Our HumanityResilience is not an external attribute that we need to acquire; it's an inherent part of our humanity. It's about how we respond to the three C's: challenge, change, and complexity. These moments of difficulty and adversity are not setbacks but opportunities for us to uncover our hidden strengths and talents. The Reverse Bucket List: Appreciating Our ChallengesOne of the concepts I introduced in the podcast was the reverse bucket list. This is a way to appreciate how challenging moments have shaped us into who we are today. I encourage everyone to reflect on their own three key moments and consider how those experiences have formed them. The Five Practices of Highly Resilient People1. Vulnerability: The Power of AuthenticityThe first practice of highly resilient people is vulnerability. It involves being able to connect deeply with ourselves and others. Vulnerability is not about sharing everything with everyone, but rather about aligning our inner thoughts and feelings with our outward expression.2. Productive Perseverance: Knowing When to PivotThe second practice is productive perseverance. Resilient individuals know when to continue in the face of challenge and opposition, and when to pivot or change their goals. It's about assessing the situation and recognizing when something is no longer serving us or yielding diminishing returns.3. Connection: Trusting Our IntuitionThe third practice is the practice of connection, both with ourselves and with others. It involves knowing our worth, trusting our intuition, and navigating relationships. Aligning the connection with ourselves and others is crucial, and knowing what to do when they are at odds is equally important.4. Grandiosity: Finding Gratitude in ChallengesThe fourth practice is grandiosity, which involves finding gratitude in challenging situations and being generous in sharing our resilient stories with others. This not only strengthens our own resilience but also provides a map for others' survival.5. Possibility: Seeing Opportunities in ChallengesLastly, the fifth practice is the practice of possibility. Resilient individuals are able to see possibilities in moments of challenge and navigate the interplay between risk and opportunity.Running Two Human Operating SystemsI also discussed the concept of running two human operating systems. When we feel one way on the inside but present a different version of ourselves on the outside, we are essentially running two different operating systems. This leads to internal turmoil and the need to expend a lot of energy to maintain the facade. However, when we align our inner and outer selves and allow vulnerability, we can operate with one human operating system, conserving energy and being more congruent.Looking AheadIn the upcoming episodes, I will delve deeper into each of the five practices of highly resilient people. I will also feature interviews with well-known individuals who will share their own stories of resilience. Stay tuned for more enlightening discussions on resilience and personal growth. Here are some highlights of the episode to look forward to:The Essence of Resilience [00:02:42]: Resilience is the essence of being human, and it exists within us. Resilience allows us to uncover hidden strengths and talents.Challenge, Change, and Complexity [00:06:35]: Challenge, change, and complexity are the fabric of human life. These moments teach us more about ourselves and offer opportunities for growth. The Five Practices of Highly Resilient People [00:11:00]: The five practices are vulnerability, mindfulness, connection, self-compassion, and growth mindset. These practices help us effectively face challenges and create positive outcomes. The first practice of vulnerability [00:13:41]: Importance of aligning our inner and outer selves, running one human operating system, and seeking support in vulnerable moments. The second practice of productive perseverance [00:15:59]: Knowing when to continue or pivot in the face of challenge, assessing the situation, and appreciating when something no longer serves us.The third practice of connection [00:17:13]: Navigating the connection with ourselves and others, trusting our intuition, and understanding the alignment or conflict between the two connections.Quintin Aaron interview preview [00:25:51]: A preview of my upcoming interview with Quintin Aaron, discussing his journey to become an actor and his stories of resilience, wellbeing, and mental health.

Buki's work is inherently focused on investigating how psychedelics can be used as a tool for transformational healing, social reform, personal and collective liberation. Her motivation includes investigating the intersections of spiritual emergence, intergenerational trauma, and transformative justice. After a tumultuous and traumatic childhood and being forced to grow up early after the loss of her father, Buki felt broken and depressed during her early teens. In need of healing and recovery, but without traditional psychotherapy resources, she was on her own. As she battled suicidality and self-harming, recreational drug use became her way to cope. After getting through university, her body spoke up and made it clear that her coping mechanism wasn't sustainable and she abstained from drug use cold turkey. The depression came back and made her withdraw from the world. Then, taking an intellectual approach to investigating depression she found research about meditation and how psilocybin worked on the brain. Thus, psychedelics came back to Buki, with an invitation to look at them with fresh perspective. In this recap of episode 77, Susan Ryan sat down with Larry Minnix, a consultant and author, and perhaps most known for his previous role as CEO of LeadingAge, a national association of nonprofit long-term and post-acute care providers. When he retired in 2015, LeadingAge named its Leadership Academy after him. In this episode of “Let Me Say This About That,” Marla and Mary take a closer look at succession planning—a topic Minnix said kept CEOs up at night. They explore the importance of a succession plan and the steps needed to create one. Mary takes a closer look at the book Minnix wrote and what he says are the secrets to successful aging. Both Mary and Marla discuss how five women from his church had such an impact on his career. In response to Minnix’s suggested that society needs to “unfreeze” the way people are thinking about nursing home care, Marla reflects on how this term is connected to a theory of change. In this special edition of Ask the Author, Dr. Andrea Pennington interviews Joana Soares about her chapter in the book "The Top 10 Traits of Highly Resilient People." Get your copy of the book here: https://amzn.to/2KddGFD Whether people see it or not, the reality is a lot of animals around the world are deeply suffering because they are being mistreated, or simply misunderstood. Veterinarian Joana Soares is on a mission to help change that reality. Joana is a passionate, dedicated, intuitive doctor of animals, first inspired by her own dog, Lucky, and her special interest is in helping pets and their owners to form a deeply connected bond. With a strong connection they can intuitively communicate or “tune in together” to support each other on their mutual healing journey. She accepted this pioneering calling when she started noticing a strong correlation between the health of pets, their owners and their families during her clinical observations. This became the foundational idea behind Joana's innovative concept of the LovePair, which focuses on the love, compassion and communication between pets and owners as an important contributor to their respective wellbeing. Resilience is something we all want, but how do we get it? In this episode, Valeria interviews Dr. Den Houter who offers a fresh perspective of the inner-workings of resilience. Dr. Den Houter was puzzled why one individual would surmount unbelievable challenges to lead a happy life, while another was stuck with just half the worries. From her successful clients, seven resilient qualities emerged and she became passionate about sharing this powerful message. Valeria interviews Dr. Kathryn Den Houter. Kathryn's early years were spent on a hobby farm in southwest Minnesota. Living on the prairie in the heart of the Midwest taught her many lessons about resilience, the blessings of simple faith, compassion for one's neighbors, and the value of honesty as the bedrock for good relationships. She attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she received her teaching credentials. Her first years of teaching were in the Wisconsin public school system. But, the fresh beauty of Michigan and the state's aspiring people wooed her back to the area. After training in a Montessori Method in Chicago, she became a Directress at Marywood Montessori School in Grand Rapids. There she met her late husband, Len Den Houter. They raised four children on a small hobby farm near Lowell, a small burg east of Grand Rapids. Kathryn pursued a doctorate in psychology at Michigan State University and began her private practice in 1989. For twenty-five years she had an immensely fulfilling career as a psychologist. It was from treating hundreds of clients that she formulated her theory of resilience. Also, after becoming a widow in 2006, her own resilience was extremely challenged. From all the years of helping others through tortuous waters, she was able to help herself. Today, she will be sharing her insights about resilience. Dr. Den Houter is the author of four books—two of them are nonfiction (Van: A Memoir of My Father and Resilience: A Workbook). The most recent books are two historical fiction books (Abigail's Exchange and Cobalt Chronicles). These books articulate the struggles of women, who, by the end of the novel, prove themselves to be both resilient and compassionate. Sometimes we are not aware of how our automatic behaviors impact our wellbeing. Becoming conscious of what's going on deep in your subconscious isn't always easy, but it may be the key to overcoming disease, relationship difficulty and even money problems. Two of our authors this week shared insights that surprised even me! Leslie van Oostenbrugge is The Awakening Dentist who recently published "Emotional Alignment is Easy" a book which combines holistic dentistry, the Law of Attraction and spiritual wisdom. https://amzn.to/2UkoFmD The Top 10 Traits of Highly Resilient People features 21 real life stories of people who have overcome serious breakdowns and not only bounced back, but have developed incredible strength to improve their lives and wellbeing. https://amzn.to/2RW5i1L My New TEDx is LIVE!
Have you ever lost your mojo? If you've ever felt down on yourself for losing your zest for life, or your enthusiasm for your work, then please know that you are not alone. #Burnout is all too common these days. It comes as a result of overworking for prolonged periods, being everything to everybody else and not finding enough time for you. I feel it's really important to say that this in NOT failure. It is a normal, human reaction to overwork. AND it's something that we can use to improve our lives. Hitting rock bottom is sometimes what it takes to bounce back up again. Or maybe you are reading this before the burnout has fully set in - in which case you can now course correct and avoid the lowest point. During the peak of my struggles with depression and stress, I got a referral to a great therapist who was known for treating high powered executives. He told me something that REALLY stuck. He said I needed to become F.A.T. Flexible. Adaptable. Tolerant. He explained to me that these were a few of the traits found in people who run multi-national companies, or have other roles that are incredibly responsible. In short, these are some of the traits that help people to manage their busy lives without crashing and burning. He was talking about resilience. This conversation woke me up to the whole topic. And since then I've been fascinated by what the others traits of resilience are, and how we can develop them for ourselves. This is where my study of the subject began. Over the years I've compiled a list of the top ten traits of resilient people. The first one on the list is Insight, and this is what I am talking about in this video.
