Welcome to Indigenous in the News with Larry K and Gary Wilcox. On today's show, we're honored to bring you one of the last interviews recorded with the late Tom Bee this past summer. It was a privilege to have him on the show and learn about his remarkable journey—from founding the Native band XIT, to initially managing the band before stepping into the role of lead singer. XIT made history as the first Native American band to sign with a major record label, and Tom's extraordinary career later earned him two Grammy Awards. Tom's life spanned 82 remarkable years, during which he touched the hearts of many with his kindness, wisdom, and love. A man of many talents and passions, he approached everything with a tireless work ethic and an unwavering dedication to excellence. Tom was born on November 8, 1941, in Gallup, New Mexico, and who passed away on July 25, 2024, in Albuquerque, was a true legend. It was an honor to have him as a guest on my music show, Indigenous in Music, this past June. I'm grateful to share our interview with all of you. Some of his numerous achievements include: 1) Winning two Grammy Awards. 2) Writing the song "(We've Got) Blue Skies" recorded by Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 which appeared on the worldwide hit album "Maybe tomorrow." 3) Coproducing and writing the song "Joyful Jukebox Music" for the Jackson 5. 4) Singing and writing the backing vocals for the song "Just My Soul Responding" for Smokey Robinson on his first solo album "Smokey." 5) Obtaining a writer, artist, and producer contract with Motown records which led to the internationally acclaimed albums "Plight of the Redman" and Silent Warrior" by Xit. 6) Writing the song "Red Hot," recorded by Taka Boom (sister of Chaka Khan) a top Billboard Disco Dance Chart hit. 7) Writing the song "Don't Be Two Faced," recorded by the top selling rockabilly artist Shakin' Stevens for his highly successful album "the Bop Won't Stop." 8) Working with legendary Producer Gary S. Paxton (Alley Oop by the Hollywood Argyles, Monster Mash by Bobby Boris Pickett, and Cherish by the Association). 9) Receiving the "Eagle Spirit Award" from the America Film Institute in San Francisco. 10) Receiving the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the First Americans in the Arts in Beverly Hills. 11) Receiving the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from Four Directions Entertainment in New York. 12) Being the recipient of the "Will Sampson Award" from the First Americans in the Arts. 13) Winning the "Producer of the Year Award" at the First Annual "Native American Music Awards" (NAMMY's). 14) Receiving of the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the "Native American Music Awards" (NAMMY's). 15) Having July 27, 2002 being proclaimed "Tom Bee Day" by Mayor Martin Chavez in recognition of Tom's accomplishments within the music industry as a recording artist, songwriter, record producer and multi-award winner. 16) Persuading NARAS to recognize the musical contributions of Native Americans by establishing a Native America category at the Grammy Awards. 17) Being CEO and founder of SOAR (Sound of America Records) As we say goodbye to Tom, we take comfort in the memories he shared with us. He will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire us.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Felipe Rose, Original Member of “The Village People” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Felipe Rose, is an original member of one of the most phenomenally popular and beloved music groups of all time: The Village People, who brought us many unforgettable hits we just couldn't stop singing and dancing to, including “YMCA”, “San Francisco”, “In the Navy”, “Macho Man”, “Go West”, “Everybody Is a Star in Hollywood”, “I Am What I Am”, and many more. They had some of the biggest hits of the 70s, and of course, the Village People starred in the classic 1980 movie, “Can't Stop the Music”. Our guest was dressed as an Indigenous American, along with his bandmates Alex Briley, the military man, David Hodo, the construction worker, Randy Jones, the cowboy, Glen Hughes, the leather man, and lead singer Victor Willis, who was sometimes a cop and sometimes a naval officer. The Village People had enormous success, with 25 gold and platinum records, an American Music Award, 2 Billboard Music Awards, a George M. Cohan Entertainer of the Year Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And in 2020, the American Library of Congress inducted the song “YMCA” into the National Recording Registry, which preserves audio recordings considered to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." In addition to his work with the Village People, our guest has had a great solo music career, recording singles including “Trail of Tears”, "We're Still Here," “Red Hawk Woman”, "Going Back to My Roots," “Dance Again” - and now, his brand new single, “That's What You Are”. This single, which was released on June 21, is now available on every major music streaming platform. Our guest has won 5 Native American Music Awards and in 2008, he was inducted into the Native American Music Hall of Fame. I talk with three-time grammy winner, multi-instrumental singer songwriter, winner of numerous Native American Music Awards, and acclaimed painter, Bill Miller. Born on the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation in northern Wisconsin, his big break came when Tori Amos discovered his music and invited him to open her tour for the Under the Pink album. They toured together for over a year. After that it was the same thing with Pearl Jam. If you ever saw Disney's Pocahontas, you remember the song “Colors of the Wind” sung by Vanessa Williams. Bill's flute playing throughout. That song won a Grammy and both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. I'm really just scratching the surface of what Bill has achieved in his life. I met him when he played on my song “Crow Country”. We've since become good friends, sharing shows together, hanging out. I look up to him — as an example of grace and wisdom and a deep sense of honoring the Spirit which animates us all. We talk about his life and perspective on creativity and where it might come from. We discuss the importance of acknowledging loss and setbacks without allowing them to define you. Finally, he let me sit in on a couple of his original songs. It was a great day in the studio.

So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
It all started when Terry found a Hopi translation of the Bible that no one could read. Sadly, the Hopi people were never taught to read their language, so it sat in a shed gathering dust. This made Terry realize that the Native American people didn't have a translation that spoke to them in their heart language. Terry started small. He wrote and recorded, The Great Story from the Sacred Book. And it won the award for Best Spoken World from the Native American Music Awards. This began the journey that resulted in him and a team of translators translating the New Testament into what we now call the First Nations Version. A beautiful translation that will speak to your heart, Native American or not. Some highlights from our conversation: Terry shares the backstory of the FNV. It all started when he was serving as a pastor to the Hopi people, and he found a Hopi translation of the Bible that no one could read. This helped him realize that most First Nations people could not read in their own language and there was no translation that really spoke to them in their heart language. Terry started slowly with audio recording. This recording won the Best Spoken Word award for the Native American Music Awards. Terry realized then that this was a needed project. We talk about some of the decisions he and the translation team made with names. And why that matters so much in the Native American culture. We discuss the oral culture – and how this translation leans into the patterns of oral storytelling. The FNV is a dynamic equivalence translation. Dynamic equivalence allows the translator to make edits as needed, so the translated text is comprehensible within the receiving culture. Oftentimes the target audience is not familiar with the source language or culture and needs idioms and references explained or localized to make sense. Terry shares the Lord's prayer with us and how he thought through the phrase, “give us our daily bread.” And how daily bread for native American people would have been different than bread. So he used words like buffalo, corn, squash, and wild rice to communicate this truth. Another important change they made was in how they translated the word “sin.” Many Native American people were told long hair was a sin, speaking in their native language was a sin – even being a Native American person felt sinful to them. Since this word had been abused, Terry sought a new way to communicate this truth. He came up with “bad hearts and broken ways.” Terry also shares his vision for how all people groups can learn from each other. It's beautiful. We end with a discussion on Ephesians 4 and Terry closes us by reading the Lord's Prayer and praying over us. Don't miss this! Society has a way of conditioning us to ignore our own souls in favor of the ego. As a result, many people walk the conventional path and find themselves in deep inner pain; looking successful on the surface, but with their souls desperately screaming in pain for something higher. This is the experience Michael Brant DeMaria had - burying his true self for his initial career path, then breaking away from that conditioning to build the life he truly wanted. How did he completely change his life from one of depression and compassion fatigue to creativity and inner peace? In this episode, the Grammy-nominated musician, author, and teacher talks about his life journey, and the experience that changed his entire trajectory. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why inner work is so necessary When we're born we're more soul than ego, how does society's construct change this? How to recover from codependency Why are empaths so prone to compassion fatigue? The truth about workaholics How do we create such aligned existences that every aspect of our lives is a vehicle for our soul work? Guest Bio Dr. Michael DeMaria's life turned inside out and upside down after the first decade of his professional life when he underwent a life transforming “lament in the wild” (vision fast) without food or water, guided by a native teacher. He went there suffering compassion fatigue and burnout from having worked for many years with severe cases of child abuse as a child protection team psychologist. The experience provided a profound healing, a course correction and gave him a vision for his life. Ever since his mission has been to help guide others to what he calls, “The ocean of peace that lies within.” He does this through his work as a musician, artist, poet, filmmaker and teacher. His healing music is heard over a million times a week across the world, garnering him four Grammy® nominations, 8 ZMR awards, 6 #1 albums, a Native American Music Award and appearing on the Grammy® Winning album, All About Bullies Big and Small. He is also a Sounds True recording artist with his music being featured on projects with Eckhart Tolle, Mark Nepo and Noah Levine. He is the author of 4 books, 3 of which were bestsellers, and is the creator and author of the Peace Within Process for Integrative Wellness. His newest book of poetry When All is Lost: Finding Heart in The Dark was released in 2020 and Souling: Birthing and Tending a Soulful Life is due out in 2022. "We are only a single note lingering in this cosmos, but as one people we make a strong chord in harmony with the universe.” Kelvin Mockingbird. Kelvin Mockingbird has been performing the Native American Flute and telling Medicine Stories of the Dineh’ since he was a young man. He has recorded 8 albums, was nominated in 2003 for Best Native American Album, and received several awards from the Native American Music Awards and the Flagstaff Music Awards. Nahko is a man of multiple truths and multiple identities. His heritage is Apache, Puerto Rican, Filipino, and Chamorro, but the indie folk rock star was raised in a white Christian household by adopted parents. His long journey of self-discovery culminated in him receiving a Native American Music Award in 2017. On the show, we discuss how Nahko first broke out of the box of Christian fundamentalism with psychedelics and how the prayers and guidance of his elders directed him back to his indigenous roots. We talk about whiteness as a longing for homeland, but also the harm in glorifying indigeneity and spiritual practices. We talk about medicine and music in the time of coronavirus. Finally, we end with Nahko’s creative process and his new album “Take Your Power Back”. This interview was recorded just as news of George Floyd’s murder was breaking, so while we speak extensively about racial identity, we don’t cover police brutality, protesting, or injustice towards black communities in America. Nahko is a musician, a storyteller, and an activists who is passionate about indigenous protection and environmental stewardship. From longing for validation from the Native American community to breaking free of the boxes of identity, Nahko has much to teach all of us about transcending our understanding of ourselves. Few people have created art across as many disciplines as Joy Harjo. Even fewer have achieved her level of success. The Tulsa native and member of the Muscogee Creek Nation is best known for her poetry, which she writes as "a voice of the indigenous people." Since the 1970s, she has published 12 books of poetry, which have won her myriad awards: the prestigious Ruth Lilly Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Josephine Miles Poetry Award, the William Carlos Williams Award, the American Indian Distinguished Achievement in the Arts Award, the American Library Association’s Notable Book of the Year, to name just a few. Her memoir, “Crazy Brave,” which details her troubling childhood and her journey to becoming a poet, won the PEN USA Literary Award for Creative Non-Fiction. She reflects on that memoir — and the personal history it forced her to confront — during our interview.Joy Harjo first studied visual art — and absolutely loved it. But there was a moment in college where her focus shifted, transforming her from an artist into a poet. This episode of Tulsa Talks is brought to you by the Tulsa Regional Chamber. Most recently, Joy was the Chair of Excellence in the Department of English at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Prior to that, she was a professor of English in the American Indian Studies department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She has also taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Arizona State University, and the universities of Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.Harjo also is an accomplished vocalist and instrumental musician, playing a menagerie that includes the guitar, ukulele, bass, flute and saxophone. Her music often incorporates the spoken word. She has produced 5 award-winning albums and is a recipient of the Native American Music Award for Best Female Artist of the Year. She performs extensively nationally and internationally with her band, Arrow Dynamics.Jerry Wofford from the Woody Guthrie Center dropped by to talk about the musical line-up for the center’s Sixth Anniversary Celebration April 26-28.Be sure to check out these great musicians performing at Guthrie Green, for free, April 26-28. She comes from a long line of curanderas — female healers — on her father’s side. Her maternal great-grandfather was an Irish/Chilean healer who came to the United States from Chile. He called himself a dentist, but did much healing and curing. At the age of five, Terri Sings With Ravens had a vision of the Lady of Guadalupe. It was this experience that inspired the song ‘My Lady Sings (Grandmother Aurelia’s song)’ from the album Blue Moon. As a singer/songwriter, Terri Sings With Ravens was nominated for a Native American Music Award and came in runner-up in the John Lennon song writing contest.Terri Sings With Ravens collaborates with other healers to hold spiritual retreats at the Serpent Mound, a site in Southern Ohio. She and her husband Tom (Johnson) own Alternate Universe Learning Center/Rock Shop. (House of Phacops) just three miles from the Serpent Mound State Park and on the southeastern edge of a five-mile wide impact crater. The shop is also sitting on top of a 17.5 km long fault line that is miles deep and is emitting a constant flow of positive energy. Terri has presented at workshops throughout the U.S. and Mexico and has worked with healers from around the world to hold spiritual retreats in various global locations. The music of Terri Sings With Ravens Rivera can be found at:https://soundcloud.com/terri-singswithravens-riverahttp://www.cdbaby.com/cd/trpiatthttp://alternateuniverserockshop.com/sings-with-ravens.htmlTerri’s husband, Thomas Johnson Thunder Rock (Tom), is a rock man from Michigan and has been collecting rocks since he was four years old. Through the 1960s and 70s, he collected a lot around Sylvania, Ohio, in a 350 million year old seabed ninety feet under ground – until the MSHA and OSHA branches of government stopped his activity in 1979 [Mine Safety and Health Administration, Occupational Safety and Health Administration]. Tom then moved to southern Ohio and began collecting from an even older seabed of 438 million years. After many trips around the world to collect and study fossils dating back to 2.7 billion years, in 1984 Thomas Johnson Thunder Rock was recognized for his achievements by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Geographic Society. He has written three books and for many years has lectured on the subject of trilobites and meteor craters. Later this summer, Tom’s recent work on the Serpent Mound and adjoining meteor crater will air on the Ancient Aliens segment of television’s History channel. Will Clipman began playing his father's drums and his mother's piano at the age of three, and has, since then, mastered a pan-global palette of percussion in addition to the traditional drum set. He has recorded over fifty albums, including twenty-one for Canyon Records, where he is regarded as the house percussionist. Will's music has received many honors, including six Grammy nominations, and three Native American Music Awards. While he is not an officially enrolled member of any tribe, Will acknowledges his family's indigenous heritage by identifying himself as as a Saamokee, a word he coined combining his Cherokee lineage on his father's side with his Saami lineage on his mother's side. This deep ancestral influence infuses Will's recordings and live performances, and informs his approach to the drum as both a musical instrument and a shamanic implement.

http://www.myspace.com/bugginmalone If you are interested in bringing Buggin Malone to your community, or for any event, please contact him at bugginmalone@hotmail.com Buggin Malone's musical writings and production are reflected in his life experiences, his passions, and his philosophy on life is revealed in his musical writings. While very proud of being Oneida, he never fails to forget that he is of blended tribes, Prairie Band Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, and Stockbridge-Munsee. Buggin Malone was born as Wayne Malone, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up on the Eastside of Milwaukee, and struggled with gang activities throughout his early years. These troubles lead him to being incarcerated as a teen. That is when he realized he had the ability to write. Ten years later he released his first CD, titled "Birth of A Warrior". Which earned him three award nominations, the Native American Music Awards, and the Indian Summer Music Awards and Just Plain Folks Music Awards. Buggin' s political influences and views shaped the direction of "Birth of A Warrior", which contains, his most requested song to date, "Dedication to Leonard Peltier".

I’m looking at maybe producing an occasional special Homegrown Song Circle whereby we focus on 2 or three artists performing a couple of stripped down versions of songs. The other idea is for a small weekly spotlight on songwriting/music creation with an artist explaining a little about how a piece came to be. Both of these ideas need your contributions to work. If you an artist who has sent stuff into me or planning to send stuff and you have the ability to either record a short audio file about the writing process or drop down an explination in an e-mail then please do. Equally if you have acoustic versions of songs please send those. I will see what the response it like and keep you posted. Want to contribute to the programme?
