Peter talks at length with the driver who in 2024 underwent open-heart surgery before rising again to win. Only one other driver in motor racing history - Robert Kubica - has won both a World Championship Grand Prix and a major rally championship; the other is Heikki Kovalainen. Winner of the 2008 Hungarian GP for McLaren-Mercedes and a podium finisher for Renault F1, Heikki subsequently won two Japanese Rally Championships with Toyota in 2022 and 2023. Then, in the spring of 2024,  Heikki's life changed suddenly when he underwent urgent open-heart surgery in Finland. For two hours he was on life-support.As we now know, the operation was a resounding success. Heikki was soon back in business, presenting the trophies on the podium for the Secto Rally of Finland in early August, before winning again in Japan. It wasn't over, though: on November 25 he was lying a stunning third in the WRC2 division of the Rally of Japan when he crashed heavily on a fast right-hander. As he says in this interview, "it gave the new heart system a bit of a work-out..." And still there was to be an epilogue: basically uninjured, Heikki on December 14-15 jumped into a car totally new to him and won the all-tarmac Union Rally in Italy. All for the love of his sport. Which is why, in our opinion Heikki was unquestionably the star of 2024 In this interview he talks to Peter about his surgery (44:30); about his massive shunt in Japan (28.53); and about beating the likes of Michael Schumacher, Sebastien Loeb, David Coulthard, Felipe Massa, Sebastian Vettel and Toyota's latest Rally star, Sami Pajari, in head-to-head match races in a wide variety of cars (17:00).With thanks to Jetcraft, the world's largest buyer and seller of executive jets:https://jetcraft.comTo OEM Exclusive, the passionate suppliers of OEM upgrades for exotic and high-performance vehiclesAnd to TrackNinja, a lap-timer and data app designed to help users improve their on-track car and driver performance through analysis and an innovative Data Garage. The factory has produced Renault F1 engines since the 1970s, but staff have been told this project will stop ahead of F1's new engine regulations in 2026. Bruno explains the thinking behind that plan, the possibility of Alpine becoming a Mercedes-powered customer team, and the alternative projects Viry could work on in future. Bruno also looks back on his year as Alpine Team Principal, the arrivals of experienced engineer David Sanchez and former team boss Flavio Briatore. This week we speak to the man with arguably the hardest job in F1: Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur. Fred is bringing Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari next year. We get into that with him, what (or who) else Ferrari still needs to win a world championship and how Fred uses humour to get his way. He talks about managing the fragile confidence of Ferrari team members and how he is pushing them to take more risks. Former Ferrari F1 engineer Rob Smedley of “Fernando is faster than you” fame helps us read between the lines along with Motorport.com Italy's F1 Editor Roberto Chinchero. Fred Vasseur, 56, has been in motorsport for 35 years. He had huge success in F3 and GP2 (the forerunner of F2) with ART – making champions of drivers like Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hulkenberg. He came into F1 in 2016 as boss of Renault F1 team, (now known as Alpine) he joined Sauber in 2017 and gave Charles Leclerc his F1 break with the team. He transferred to Ferrari for the start of the 2023 season and is now a multiple F1 Grand Prix winner.

We interrupt our regular scheduling to bring you a special episode of Performance Process to coincide with the start of the Formula 1 season. In this special episode we focus less on the processes of going faster and more on the transferable skills, processes, and obsessions between F1 and cycling with former F1 driver and Escape Collective member, Jack Aitken.Jack was the 2015 Formula Renault Eurocup champion and he competed in GP3 and FIA Formula 2 before becoming test drive at Renault F1. He is best known in F1 circles for his time with Williams F1, whom he drove for in the 2020 Sakhir Gand Prix. We recorded this episode last July when he was doubling up driving duties with IMSA's Whelen Cadillac and DTM's Emil Frey racing. Jack is back in IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) this year with the number 31 car Whelen Engineering Cadillac.Jack also takes to two wheels as often as any of us and has competed in both criteriums and gran fondos. We ask Jack what the fascination is with cycling for F1 drivers, and discuss the transferable skills, the leakage of talent that is F1's loss and cycling's gain, environmental endeavours of both sports, how breathable his underwear is, and finally rules … but of course.

In this bonus series on Leadership and Learning, we are sharing episodes from other podcast series we recommend. They feature inspirational people that our host, Sue Stockdale has interviewed. This guest episode is from The Sports 2000 podcast.Sue Stockdale talks to John Iley, a new competitor in the Duratec category of Sports 2000 (a sports prototype series) about his debut season, how he works with motorsport engineering student's trackside, as well as how John aims to improve his own driver performance. As a youngster, John dreamed of driving racing cars and it took four decades to fulfil his ambition. His career instead took a different direction where he focused on the technical side of motorsport which became all-consuming. Notable career highlights include working at Jordan Grand Prix as a senior aerodynamicist, before becoming Head of Aero in 1998. He continued working in that role at Renault F1, Ferrari F1, and in McLaren F1 evolving to Performance Director. Now running his own business since 2015, John is a consultant, predominantly helping people's performance vehicles go faster as well as supporting International and National motorsport governing bodies technically. Iley gained his ARDS racing licence at 50 years old and made his Sports 2000 debut in 2021 with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) team where he lectures, mentors and is Professor of Practice. Welcome to episode twenty-five of the Low Tide Boyz, a Swimrun Podcast! On this week’s show, we have Andy Blow, the Co-founder of Precision Hydration. We did a major deep dive into hydration for Swimrun and chat about his quest to solve his own performance issues and how that led him to start PH. More on that later in the show. But we have to tell everyone that Andy was cool enough to set up a discount code for our listeners for 15% off online orders with the code LOWTIDEBOYZ. This code is good through the end of July so place an order and help make us look good while properly hydrating for your training and racing. We have dual shout outs this week! First, we wanted to give a shout out to Tim Fleming of the Endurance Performance Training Center in Mill Valley. As prep for our interview with Andy for this week’s show, he hooked us up with an appointment to get a legit/advanced sweat test. Tim conducted the test and was incredibly knowledgeable. We learned a ton and could have chatted with him for hours. We really appreciated all the time he gave us and we will definitely have him on the show at some point because he is a wealth of knowledge on all things endurance performance.Second, we wanted to give a special shout out to an entire country. The country of Japan has started listening to our Swimrun 101 episode this last week at a super high rate. Somehow the word got out and a bunch of swimrunners or soon to be swimrunners are going to be getting after it in Japan. Konnichiwa and Arigato! We wanted to remind everyone to join our Low Tide Boyz Strava Club. It’s been a fun way to see what everyone is up to training and racing-wise and we make a promise that every person in that group is guaranteed to get kudos from us. So if anyone really wants an extra two kudos for every workout plus the probability of funny comments from us, join up.Now for some exciting news, our pool has finally opened! (Queue the pearly gates music) We are excited to destroy our shoulders and build back up our swim fitness. We are loosely following a training plan from an article from Triathlete Magazine about returning to swimming after a long layoff. Speaking of Triathlete Magazine, make sure to check out our monthly column on all things Swimrun! If you have any suggestions for topics or have questions that you want to be answered, feel free to reach out to us.Now for this week’s interview! Andy Blow has a few top 10 Ironman and 70.3 finishes and an Xterra World Age Group title to his name. He has a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and was once the Team Sports Scientist for Benetton and Renault F1 teams. He raced his first Swimrun (the Ötillö World Championship) in 2014. He founded Precision Hydration in 2011 to help athletes solve their hydration issues. PH became a sponsor and official hydration partner for Ötillö in 2017.Andy’s draw to Swimrun was the idea of being able to race in pairs. After knee surgery and essentially backing away from triathlon, he asked his training partner Elliot if he wanted to check it out. They then reached out to Mats and Michael at Ötillö to get into the 2014 race. (They finished in the top 10) Part of the attraction to Swimrun for Andy was the wild west/infancy stage and the adventure. We chatted about how he started PH by basically trying to diagnose and solve his own fueling problems in races. The idea for the company took shape after helping a bunch of athletes with a lot of success. We also chatted about the misconceptions about hydration and how a lot of symptoms that athletes experience during and after events can be solved by taking proper amounts of sodium. We did a deep dive into how to calculate sweat rate and properly hydrate and how to unlock better race performances. We broke down the different theories around hydration and why hydration now can be much more individualized and effective. Andy explained to us why they designed their products to have three levels of sodium formulas—1500, 1000, 500—and how to determine which to use and when. Finally, we talked about how to properly hydrate endurance events generally (they have a great blog post on their website about this) and specifically for Swimrun. Since teams are limited in what they can carry onboard, properly using aid stations to make sure that sodium levels are kept at optimal levels. We closed out the conversation talking about how to properly recover sodium levels after workouts.Andy and the Low Tide Boyz encourage everyone to take a free sweat test on the PH website and reach out to them with questions at hello@precisionhydration.com. PH also provides free consultations to help individuals get their hydration strategy dialed in which is super cool! Don’t forget to use the discount code LOWTIDEBOYZ that’s good for 15% off through the end of July! That’s it for this week’s show. I also won an Xterra World Age Group title back in the year 2000. Knee surgery forced me out of competitive triathlon a few years ago, but I still compete for fun at events like Coast to Coast New Zealand and OtillO. I mainly get away with this because my incredibly supportive wife Lucy (and 2 kids) agree to pretend that these trips are in fact family holidays. I’ve got a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and was once the Team Sports Scientist for Benetton and Renault F1 teams. I learnt about hydration and electrolyte replenishment the hard way, by getting things very wrong and ending up in the medical tent of more than one hot endurance event. It took a lot of frustrating trial and error to get to the bottom of my hydration problems. Host: Jai Shukla & Guest: Ben Hurst Q1 — How did it all begin in Oakville, all the way to Canada, and now you're the British GT? The dad of Ben Hurst stirred up the whole process when he took him to Bridgestone racing Academy to try out for a racing license. Ben Hurst got started in Formula Ford, here in Canada. He met one of the teams when he was at racing school there to get his racing license because Ben was just interested in trying. They eventually then won the championship after 3 years of persistence. The team he was with In the UK got partnered with an F3 team during the Formula Ford festival of friends. So that's kind of how Ben got introduced to everyone quickly in the UK. And that's kind of how all his opportunities came out. So it's kind of in one meeting after the next.   Q2 — You started off racing at age 16, did that affect how you saw the races approach the races? Yes, especially in F3 you have to be willing to either go into that corner and either crashed your car into someone else or if they back off. But Ben Hurst is not wired to go into a corner and just either Yes, he is going to make it or he is going to be out of the race. Ben always want to finish races, no matter what.   Q3 — So have you considered endurance racing something like Lemans? After watching it this year with Aston, Ben Hurst knew in my heart that there’s where he wants to be. Ben loves the level of preparation the teams go through. It's like an F1 car, but it's a GT car that goes for 24 hours.   Q4 — Between F3 and GT, what kind of differences are they in terms of pressure and atmosphere? I think there's more pressure because it's not only my race weekend, it's my teammates. Having a teammate does change the mentality a lot because you have to bring the car home for them because it's their race weekend as well. It’s always rewarding to get the results on track in the morning after your teammates may have put in the late night to get the car ready morning.   Q5 — How is your relationship with your partner and what is your advice on how to create a bond with your partner? For my partner, despite our different backgrounds, we have formed an efficient partnership. He is naturally quick but does not have racing experience. He helps me with qualifying for my outright pace and I handle the race starts. To build a great relationship with your teammates, I’d advise you to spend time together, train together, learn how each they work.   Q6 — Do you feel that racing is something you will want to continue for the rest of your life? Well, I've just graduated. And I took a degree that would help me with my racing career (Sports management) So I spent some time with the Renault F1 team, as a work placement in their sponsorship department learning how to how they get sponsors, I think that helped me.   Q7 — Can you share tips on how to get sponsorships? Its hard work, get a lot of verified contacts (email/phone lines especially) who are interested in what you do. Find the market you are in, look for companies that are interested in what you do. A blue ocean strategy will pay off big time. On what companies expect in return: Some opt for increased sales of their cars or other organizing coaching events. Expectations vary from one company to another. Be it Aston Martin, Renato or Renault.     Q8 — How did the university degree help you expand your knowledge about sponsorships?  I did my dissertation on how sponsorship works in Formula One. I also leveraged on the experience of the Head of my management team with 20 years of experience. He moved from the mechanic side to the commercial side of racing. Side by side, these two events expanded my knowledge on how sponsorships work. I’d say that Formula 1 sponsorship is about Business to Business partnership and getting introductions.   Q9 — Would you like to go into Formula One at some point? Or is it La mans and hundred percent endurance racing? I am 100% going to GT and endurance racing. I want to build my career with support from either dealerships or manufacturers at this level and work my way up to a factory role with one of the manufacturers. Rather than trying to find the funding for F3 for another year, FIA F3, for another year and then F2.     Q10 — So how do you manage to deal with that pressure of actually going into the car and feeling like everyone's ready and waiting for you to now deliver? If you're prepared, then you have nothing. That’s exactly my mindset. I think that the biggest thing I've learned is preparation. If I do my training, right, if I eat right, by the time I get to the race, I'm fully prepared and there should be nothing I'm got to think about other than going forward in the race that we're at.   Q11 — What do you feel is the biggest difference between watching and driving? So I think sometimes it looks a bit more intense on TV than it is in the car. Because you're calm in the car, you're just focusing on what you need to do. In the car, you're focused on what's directly in front of you and what's directly behind you. And you count on your team at that point for what's going on the bigger picture. As a driver, I keep a lot of things out of my mind.   Q12 — Have you ever been out of the zone? Are you ever in a situation where you feel like, today's just not my day when you're driving? More so, can you share with us on how you get yourself in the zone? I work hard at making sure I'm in the zone, I have a mine coach that works with my management company. And they help to keep that going system. As a routine, I usually do a warm-up of two to three minutes, jump on the skipping rope. And then I will go and find my own space for about 20 minutes, 10 minutes and listen to music. And then I commonly go put my helmet on. By the time my helmets are on, I keep my visor closed because I want to. I'm in the zone by that point. When I get in the car, I get the radios plugged in, and then I'm talking to my team. And it's all 100% of focus to what you have to do after that.   Q13 — What 3 tips can you share with racing drivers wannabes to put them in a position to make their dreams come true? Work hard. I am a fan of fitness. Have a notebook at the track or when you go-karting. If there are bumps and stuff you notice on the track, or if there's a line that works or a good overtaking spot, write it down. Make sure you know and write it down. It helps you. Don’t give up. You can't give up you have to keep going.
