Welcome to the DMF! I'm Justin Younts, and today I'm diving deep into my experience with the iconic Crypt Keeper from Tales from the Crypt. As the story editor for the show, I had the unique opportunity to oversee the transition of the franchise from comic books to television. My role was crucial, as I was the last word on every script, ensuring that each episode captured the essence of what made Tales from the Crypt so special. But it wasn't just about the scripts; I also had the incredible task of writing the Crypt Keeper segments. Imagine trying to create a character who didn't exist yet! I had to invest him with personality and depth, and I drew from my own experiences and humor to bring him to life. The Crypt Keeper became my own little personal Groucho, and I wanted to give him a rich interior life. Throughout the third season, we worked hard to reinvigorate the franchise, bringing in big names and creating memorable stories. The Crypt Keeper evolved into a beloved character, and fans often tell me that he was their gateway into the world of horror. It's amazing to see how a character can resonate with so many people, even when they were told not to watch the show. Join me as I share behind-the-scenes stories, the challenges of writing for the Crypt Keeper, and how we created a character that became synonymous with the series. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just curious about the process, there's something here for everyone. Liz and Sarah talk to social media star Kristen Tepper about navigating Hollywood from the point of view of a writer who’s kicking ass and making a name for herself while working toward her first big break as a screenwriter. How did she get her current job as a Showrunner’s assistant? How should reluctant writers approach the use of social media? Then, in The Craft (& Fain), they talk about why you can’t game the system — no matter how much you’d like to. This week’s Hollywood Hack (inspired by Liz’s recent closet purge) comes from listener Laurie: try the clothing swap app Lucky Sweater. Finally, Sarah recommends the (very dark) podcast Root of Evil. McKeever has appeared on Comedy Central's Adam Devine's House Party, HBO's High Maintenance, and was a regular on TruTV's Almost Genius. “Our goal in writing [Sirens] was to write something that makes you think, and offers the opportunity to re-examine your own assumptions that you made about these characters. And it's taxing. We ask some difficult questions. It's not The Perfect Couple. It's not a murder show. We're going after something thematically that's really large and really ambitious, and that's why the Greek mythology came to mind. These are epic stories. These are about blood, and moms, and torture, and trauma, and pain. These themes are not tiny. These are complicated, juicy stews,” says showrunner and creator, Molly Smith Metzler about why she wanted to invoke big themes from Greek drama in her TV show Sirens.  On today's episode, we chat with Molly Smith Metzler, showrunner and creator of the hit Netflix limited series Sirens starring Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy and Kevin Bacon. The show is based on her stage play Elemeno Pea from 2011. Smith Metzler talks about making the transition from playwriting to television and what she learned about being in the writer's room for Orange is the New Black.  "Everything you do in a [writer's] room is an offering. I'm here to serve, I'm here to serve you. Come in with ideas, offer them. If they don't hit, back off of them. You are a sous chef and a waiter," she says.  She also talks about writing edgy female characters unapologetically, like the ones in Sirens, and the numerous times she was asked to remove a certain risqué scene from the pilot script – which she refused to do. "We have to write these women in their truest form – they're complicated, and they don't have to explain themselves, either. My job is not to soften her so an audience won't turn off the TV show," she says.  To hear more about creating Sirens listen to the podcast.

Episode 300! thank's so much. Emmy, Peabody, and Writers' Guild of America Award winning writer/producer Mike Scully has written many forms of comedy: animation, single-cam, multi-cam, hidden-cam, award shows, and live performance. After seven years of writing for shows you've never heard of, he joined The Simpsons writing staff as a producer in 1993. He was promoted to showrunner in 1997 for Seasons 9 thru 12 (considered the four most consecutive seasons of the show) and co-wrote and co-produced The Simpsons Movie, released in 2007. He was a consulting producer on the show until 2021 and recently wrote a new episode. Mike also served as writer/producer on the Emmy-winning Everybody Loves Raymond, as well as Parks & Recreation, starring Amy Poehler. (He also appeared on the show several times as a disgruntled citizen asking stupid questions at town meetings.) He was a writer/producer on the critically acclaimed NBC series “The Carmichael Show” starring comedian Jerrod Carmichael. He co-created (with wife Julie Thacker-Scully & Amy Poehler) the animated Fox/Hulu show Duncanville starring Poehler, Ty Burrell, and Rashida Jones, which ran three seasons. He also co-created some quickly cancelled shows such as “The Pitts”, “Complete Savages”, and an animated version of Napoleon Dynamite.” He and Julie wrote the pilot for the ABC/Hulu show Shifting Gears. He is a Consulting Producer on the upcoming second season of the Netflix series, A Man On The Inside starring Ted Danson. He has written jokes for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler when they hosted the Golden Globes and for their current live Restless Leg tour. In 1998, he organized writing staffs of all the Fox animated shows to win Writers Guild of America union coverage for the writers, who had previously been underpaid and without healthcare and pension contributions, unlike their live action counterparts. He has five daughters who provide him a never-ending financial reason to keep working. We chat about the Simpsons and being a show runner, leadership style and empowerment, moving to LA, his many ‘odd' jobs, cancelled shows and rejection, false promises, Everybody loves Raymond, creating shows, art vs the business, doing comedy after Robin Williams, point of view, working on Parks and Recreation, moving forward plus much more! This week on Danger Close, Jack Carr is joined by two pivotal figures behind the hit Amazon Prime Video series THE TERMINAL LIST: former Navy SEAL Jared Shaw and Executive Producer and Showrunner, David DiGilio.Jared Shaw, a longtime friend and SEAL teammate of Jack's, played a crucial role in bringing THE TERMINAL LIST to life — handing the manuscript to Chris Pratt before the book was even published. That single act set the project in motion and laid the foundation for what would become a powerhouse creative team.David DiGilio entered the story after reading the novel and immediately connecting with its authenticity, psychological complexity, and emotional depth. As showrunner, he helped shape the tone, structure, and cinematic vision of the series alongside director Antoine Fuqua and star Chris Pratt.Jared came on board as a technical advisor and producer and was later cast as “Boozer,” training alongside fellow SEALs and contributing to the show's realism, tactical authenticity, and emotional weight. David guided the production through the unique challenges of the COVID era, with writers' rooms, casting, and collaboration taking place entirely over Zoom.Together, Jared and David worked closely with Jack at every stage — from script development and character arcs to tunnel fight choreography and post-production editing. Their combined efforts helped ensure that The Terminal List remained grounded in truth, honoring the brotherhood and sacrifices of those who serve. This episode pulls back the curtain on how a bond forged in the SEAL Teams — and a shared commitment to authentic storytelling — helped create one of the most compelling and accurate military thrillers ever brought to screen.FOLLOW DAVIDInstagram: @digiliofilmsFOLLOW JACKInstagram: @JackCarrUSA X:  @JackCarrUSAFacebook:  @JackCarr YouTube:  @JackCarrUSASPONSORSCRY HAVOC – A Tom Reece Thriller https://www.officialjackcarr.com/books/cry-havoc/Bravo Company Manufacturing - BCM Stock MOD3:https://bravocompanyusa.com/bcm-stock-mod-3-black/   and on Instagram @BravoCompanyUSATHE SIGs of Jack Carr:Visit https://www.sigsauer.com/ and on Instagram @sigsauerinc Jack Carr Gear: Explore the gear here https://jackcarr.co/gear
