Luke Tomlinson (Impropod Podcast) and Ash Farkas return to Flixwatcher to review Luke's choice Elvis. Elvis (2022) is an epic Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz (Moulin Rouge!) Luhrmann. It stars Austin Bulter as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker. Told from the Colonel's point of view it tells the story of Elvis' rise to fame and peak celebrity status. Filmed in true Baz vision Elvis is loud, gaudy and chaotic version of Elvis' early days and cult icon status. Interesting for a biopic it doesn't feature any original Elvis recordings. Despite not winning the best actor Oscar, Austin Butler gives an impressive performance as Elvis. Scores for Elvis were mixed, recommendability depends on your interest and enthusiasm for Elvis and the divisive Baz Luhrmann aesthetic, clocking in at two hours and 39 minutes it didn't score high for repeat viewing either. Overall Elvis scores 2.75. Babs and Fran from Over/Underrated podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Bab's choice Full Metal Jacket. Full Metal Jacket (1987) is Stanley Kubrick's ‘war is hell' film based on the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers by U.S Marine Gustav Hasford. It stars Matthew Modine as Private James T. "Joker" Davis, Vincent D'Onofrio as Private Leonard "Gomer Pyle” Lawrence and R. Lee Ermey as Gunnery Sergeant L. Hartman. Unusually for a Vietnam War film Full Metal Jacket primarily focuses on the gruelling eight-week drill training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. During the boot camp, Leonard is relentlessly tormented by Gunnery Sergeant, who nicknames him "Gomer Pyle” and bullies him over his weight. Joker at first is inclined to help Leonard but pulls back after a jelly doughnut incident incites punishment for the whole platoon. The second half sees Joker as a sergeant based in Da Nang as a reporter, finally seeing some action. Full Metal Jacket is a classic anti-war film, it central theme is about the abuse of young men by the military and the abuse turning them into killing machines that kill other men as well as women and children. Recommendability scores for Full Metal Jacket were mixed, like the film itself, the first half is stronger than the second half. It's near two hour runtime gave for lower repeat viewing and engagement scores and Full Metal Jacket scores 2.92 overall. James Lloyd and Steve Smith from The Alcohol-Free Revolution podcast join Flixwatcher to review James' choice E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. E.T (1982) is a sci-fi adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg. It stars Henry Thomas as Elliot, a boy who befriends E.T, who had accidentally been left on earth during a visit with his family. It also stars Dee Wallace as Henry's mum Mary, Robert MacNaughton as Michael, Henry's brother and in her debut role, Drew Barrymore as Gertie, the boys younger sister. When ET, a small brown alien with big blue eyes, is left behind, Elliot finds him and takes him in. As they begin to bond they start sharing thoughts and emotions. Elliot with his brother Michael and sister Gertie's help manage to hide ET from their mother and help ET make a device to phone home. It quickly becomes a race against the authorities when government agents locate ET. Recommendability scores for ET were pretty high, for a film from the 1980s it has aged pretty well and ET scores 3.91 overall. Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently, Sugar Sugar and So Much More

    A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2025 52:00

When you think of catchy pop anthems from the late '60s and '70s, chances are Andy Kim's fingerprints are all over them. The Canadian singer-songwriter carved out a space in music history with a string of hits that defined an era, yet his journey stretches far beyond his chart-toppers. From his humble beginnings in Montreal to penning global hits, stepping away from fame, and eventually enjoying a triumphant comeback, Andy Kim's story is as fascinating as his music.Born Andrew Youakim, the son of Lebanese immigrants, Andy grew up in a large family surrounded by music . He was drawn to the excitement and energy of rock and roll, idolizing Elvis and Buddy Holly, while dreaming of making it big himself. By his teens, he was already writing songs, learning the ropes of show business, and imagining a future far beyond the streets of Montreal. At just 16, Kim headed to New York City with little more than ambition and determination. He knocked on doors in Manhattan's famous Brill Building, the mecca of songwriting in the '60s, where legends like Carole King, Neil Diamond, and Jeff Barry were crafting timeless hits. His persistence paid off—he eventually landed a meeting with producer Jeff Barry, who became his mentor and collaborator. In '68, Andy Kim released his first single which cracked the Top 20 in the U.S. This early success was just the beginning. The following year, he co-wrote Sugar, Sugar for the fictional band The Archies. The bubblegum pop anthem became a worldwide smash, selling over six million copies. Even though Andy wasn't the face of the Archies, his contribution to one of the biggest hits of the decade cemented his reputation as a first-class songwriter.Andy followed up with his own string of solo hits. His knack for crafting feel-good melodies kept him on the charts and in demand throughout the early '70s.The defining moment of Andy Kim's career came in '74 with Rock Me Gently. Written, produced, and recorded entirely on his own terms, Kim initially struggled to get labels interested. Refusing to give up, he pressed the record himself, and the gamble paid off. The song soared to No. 1 and became an international hit. At the height of his fame, Andy Kim was a household name. But the music industry can be fickle. After the success of Rock Me Gently, the hits became harder to come by. By the late '70s and '80s, Andy chose to step back from the spotlight. He adopted the pseudonym Baron Longfellow and released music under that name, but the commercial magic of his earlier work proved elusive.Still, he never stopped writing and recording. Though he wasn't topping charts anymore, he was quietly influencing younger artists and remaining connected to the craft he loved. In the '90s and 2000s, Andy's legacy started to be celebrated more widely. Younger musicians, especially in Canada, cited him as a pioneer. In 2004, he made a triumphant return with I Forgot to Mention, written with Barenaked Ladies' Ed Robertson. That collaboration rekindled his profile. In 2015, he released the album It's Decided, produced with Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene. Andy Kim's contributions haven't gone unnoticed. He's been inducted into Canada's Music Hall of Fame, received the Order of Canada, and continues to be recognized as a national treasure. His enduring influence lies not just in the timeless appeal of Rock Me Gently and Sugar, Sugar, but also in his perseverance, humility, and generosity.Even today, Andy is active in the music world, performing, mentoring, and celebrating the power of song. His story is a testament to resilience—a reminder that the peaks and valleys of fame can't overshadow genuine talent and passion.Andy joins us today to share his story. I really hope you enjoy it.

Ever wondered where the line between inspiration and appropriation lies in performance art? Captain Frodo welcomes comedian-magician Nick Diffatte for a candid exploration of originality in magic that will resonate with creators across all disciplines.Nick takes us behind the scenes of Tannen's Magic Camp—an intensive gathering where 120 young magicians (ages 10-20) immerse themselves in the craft under the guidance of working professionals. You'll feel like you're wandering the Hogwarts-like halls of Bryn Bawr College as Nick describes the transformation these young performers undergo when they realize they're not alone in their passion. The teaching methodology is fascinating: forcing students to perform on day one breaks down barriers, creating a safe space where they can be vulnerable enough to truly learn. The conversation shifts into territory rarely discussed publicly—the ethical questions performers face when developing material. Through the lens of what Nick calls "the Elvis analogy," they explore how performers can honor magical traditions while still finding their authentic voice. When does a borrowed trick become truly yours? How much must you change something before claiming ownership? The answers aren't simple, but they're essential for anyone who creates. Most compelling is their shared vulnerability about their own creative processes. Captain Frodo confesses his insecurity about performing routines developed by others, while Nick reveals his struggles publishing instructional material that walks the line between teaching technique and sharing complete performance pieces. Their honesty strips away the mystery often surrounding creative work, revealing the human questions that haunt even the most accomplished performers.Whether you're a magic enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates the creative process, this episode offers rare insights into how art evolves through generations while remaining true to its roots. First, we wrestle with Britain's latest flirtation with national ID cards — a grand plan that looks less like efficiency and more like Big Brother with a clipboard. Why should the average bloke need a barcode to buy a sandwich, when freedom is supposed to be stitched into the fabric of the nation? Then, across the Atlantic, we dip into the bizarre saga of Graceland. Fraudsters tried to swipe Elvis Presley's home with forged paperwork. Yes, really. The King's estate nearly went under the hammer, but the con unraveled faster than a karaoke wig. Lies may glitter for a moment, but truth eventually smashes through like a drum solo. Finally, we dust off the archaeology desk — scientists claim a million-year-old skull has been found, nudging human evolution further back in time. Headlines shout about ancestors with funny foreheads, but the real point is this: theories change, God's truth doesn't. Humanity is still created in His image, whether the skulls are dated one hundred years or a million. Mark has a poem, Pete brings the Bible, and together we serve up perspective with punch.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.

Collapsing teams this September inspire a visit with a Twins journeyman who has a huge day at the plate, keeping an unexpected contender in first place for a little longer (though the magic leaves when Elvis does), and then reveals the way he's tried to take charge of his destiny, Rod Carew wonders if he's been accepted, and three old guys living near Cincinnati go to jail for “contumely.”The Infinite Inning is a journey to the past to understand the present using baseball as our time machine. America's brighter mirror, baseball reflects, anticipates, and even mocks the stories we tell ourselves about our world today. Baseball Prospectus's Steven Goldman shares his obsessions: history from inside and outside of the game, politics, stats, and Casey Stengel quotations. Along the way, we'll try to solve the puzzle that is the Infinite Inning: How do you find the joy in life when you can't get anybody out?

Gurdip, Bec and Justin decided to crack open a time capsule from the early 1980s and inside sat the album that has become possibly the most divisive Elvis bootleg ever released. Intended as a spoof of cash-grab compilations of "hit" Elvis movie songs by RCA in the 1970s, an infamously crass compilation bringing together some of the "worst" of Elvis's film songs at first glance seems to be going for mere shock value, but the contents of the album and the story behind its compilation do reveal in-jokes from deep within the Elvis fandom at the time. The question then becomes, did the jokes reach their intended target or did they fly over everyone's head and simply pile on more mockery and add to the problem? Justin reflects on Greil Marcus's contemporary account of the album from 1985, which frames it as part of an ironic, playful punk recontextualization amid a cultural reckoning with Elvis as an object of mass attention, but also ponders whether that read misses the forest for the trees. And what of the songs themselves? Do such songs as "US Male" and "Beach Boy Blues" deserve to be labeled as among the "greatest sh*t"? We discuss it all within! For Song of the Week, Gurdip blasts through the breezy "Carny Town" from Roustabout, while Justin meditates on "We Call on Him," the inspirational number written explicitly for Elvis released as an Easter single in 1968. Metal YouTuber and fellow Oregonian Taylor Danley shows up with riffs, opinions, and a tube-amp habit that could brown out a neighborhood. We trace the path from Elvis ukulele kid to extreme-metal lifer, then get into the real fight: cranked amps vs. modeling. We make the case for the Boss Tube Amp Expander (turn it up, keep your lease), why an Axe-Fx is the smartest carry-on, and how millimeters of mic placement beat a mile of copy-paste presets. We talk producers who actually make bands sound like bands (Adam D., Will Putney), the charm of leaving one or two “human” wobbles in the take, and why the Boss Katana is still the new-player cheat code. Gear heads get the goodies: Orange OR80, old Marshalls, NS-2 doing unglamorous hero work, the Metal Zone used tastefully (yes, it can be done), and the story behind Taylor's Obsidian Audio boost plus a new preamp on the way. There's record-store nostalgia, kids discovering Sabbath, a Corolla-vs-'69 Camaro tone analogy, and a very Portland pizza detour to land the plane. Good laughs, useful takeaways, zero gatekeeping. “A lively new book.” —The Guardian“Spine-chilling exposé.” —The Daily Mail• Draws on firsthand accounts from Elvis's wife, Priscilla, his friends and family, the Memphis Mafia, and his spiritual advisors• Looks at key teachers who influenced him, including Yogananda, H. P. Blavatsky, and Manly P. Hall• Examines Elvis's efforts as a natural healer, the significance of his UFO encounters, and his telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveling abilitiesElvis Presley, the most successful solo artist in history and an emblematic cultural figure of the Western world, has been widely perceived as a conservative Southern Christian. However, the truth about the man has been missed.Writer and researcher Miguel Conner reveals how Elvis was a profound mystic, occultist, and shaman. Beginning with the unusual circumstances of his birth—and his stillborn twin brother—Conner traces the diverse thread of mysticism that runs through Elvis Presley's life, drawing on firsthand accounts from the people closest to him, including his wife, Priscilla, the Memphis Mafia, and his spiritual advisors. He shows how Elvis studied seminal 19th- and 20th-century occultists, including H. P. Blavatsky, Manly P. Hall, G. I. Gurdjieff, and P. D. Ouspensky, and was a devotee of Indian yogi Paramahansa Yogananda. Conner argues that Elvis was well-versed in the esoteric practices of sex magic, meditation, astrology, and numerology and had a deep familiarity with Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Theosophy, and Eastern traditions. He also reveals how Elvis was a natural healer, telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveler who had significant mystical experiences and UFO encounters.Looking at the conspiratorial and paranormal aspects of Elvis's life, the author explores the "Elvis visitations" that have occurred since the King's death and the general high weirdness of his life. As Conner convincingly argues, Elvis was not just a one-of-a-kind rock-and-roller. He was the greatest magician America ever produced.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Miguel Conner - The Occult Elvis - The Mystical and Magical Life of the KingElvis Presley, the most successful solo artist in history and an emblematic cultural figure of the Western world, has been widely perceived as a conservative Southern Christian. He was the greatest magician America ever produced.• Draws on firsthand accounts from Elvis's wife, Priscilla, his friends and family, the Memphis Mafia, and his spiritual advisors• Looks at key teachers who influenced him, including Yogananda, H. P. Blavatsky, and Manly P. Hall• Examines Elvis's efforts as a natural healer, the significance of his UFO encounters, and his telekinetic, psychic, and astral traveling abilitiesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
