In today's episode, we sit down with the legendary William Stanford Davis, the Emmy-winning actor who's stolen scenes (and hearts) as the unforgettable Mr. Johnson on Abbott Elementary. From his roots in St. Louis to chasing standup comedy in Los Angeles, William's path to Hollywood is as inspiring as it is unexpected. He opens up about breaking into the industry, the lessons he learned from mentors like Martin Landau, and the risks that shaped his craft. And of course, we talk Abbott Elementary. Davis shares the story behind his iconic character, including a risky, improvised line in his audition that might have sealed the deal. He also gives us an insider look into the dynamic ensemble, the balance between script and improvisation, and how he approaches every set as a team player who makes sure to learn everyone's name. Last night's Fated Mates Live was so much fun, but now we're back in your earholes again. It's time again for our annual Sarah MacLean deep dive (with no spoilers!). As per tradition, Jen asks Sarah a bunch of fun questions and forces Sarah to talk about her book. And it all ends with Julia Whalen reading two chapters of These Summer Storms! It was a delight to see so many of you in St. Louis yesterday, and to everyone else, we're just as glad you're here with us today. NotesIt's finally time for These Summer Storms! And it might not be too late to see Sarah on book tour! Mary Kay Andrews is very fierce on Instagram, and we love her for it. You can also see her with Renee Adiah, author of the forthcoming Park Avenue, which she mentions at the end of the show. When the New York Times published their Best Books of the 21st Century so far, Sarah shared her ballot. Jean Seberg made her first two films, Saint Joan and Bonjour Tristesse, for director Otto Preminger, a tyrannical svengali character whose methods would traumatize Jean for the rest of her life and career. No wonder she rebelled against this bad dad figure by marrying a handsome French opportunist. Meanwhile, Jane Fonda moves to New York, joins the Actors Studio, takes up with her own hyper-controlling male partner, and tries to define herself as something other than Henry Fonda's daughter. Reflective of cultural beliefs and personal experiences, this episode encourages listeners to open up and discuss these difficult yet enriching topics.MORE ALI MEZEY:Website: www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:www.alimezey.com/personal-geometry-foundationsTransgenerational Healing Films: www.constellationarts.comMORE FLORENCE POPOFF:Website: www.gamriegardens.comInstagram: @gamriegardensMORE KAREN BELLONE:The Seventh Sense website: www.theseventhsense.orgFilm Website: www.kbfilms.comBIO:Founder, Doula, Educator: Karen Bellone, MFA, is a Certified End-of-Life Doula and Death Educator. She is the founder of The Seventh Sense in NY's Hudson Valley, where she is an integral part of a worldwide community that is reigniting the wisdom of death within our modern lives. She is also founder of Exit Strategy for Dying, a monthly Death, Arts and Culture Readers supporting a resource hub to educate and refocus the narrative around death and grief through the lens of arts, culture, storytelling and innovation. Prior to embracing her passion for end-of-life work, Karen has had a long career as an award-winning filmmaker and internationally collected photographer. She received a BFA in Film Production from New York University, and did graduate work with the world-renowned Actors Studio, through their inaugural program at the New School for Social Research. After training and becoming certified with INELDA (International End of Life Doula Association), Karenworked with an innovative hospice in Los Angeles where her skills as a death doula were developed and broadened. In addition to working with patients in various stages of their life journeys, she was responsible for training the volunteer staff, nurses and other hospice and medical professionals to bring more understanding, humanity and compassion into their work with the dying. She spoke regularly with groups, such as the Alzheimer's Project, about the role of the doula at end-of-life, and the space that can be held to bring about ‘a good death'. She believes strongly in the ability to demystify and assuage the fear that surrounds death in our culture and to foster safe passage for the dying, as well as to aid the families and loved ones through grief and bereavement. As a visual artist and storyteller, Karen acquired a multitude of skills throughout her career that unlocked a deep passion for the healing power of visual and auditory perception on human consciousness. She integrated these strengths and resources into tools to bring aid and comfort for those imminently facing their mortality. Working with somatic and sensory awareness, Karen utilizes visual, sound and meditation therapy, personalized guided imagery, and commemoration of the sacred in the form of ritual, legacy and memory work, in order to bring comfort - physically, emotionally, spiritually to celebrate and commemorate the life of the individual. In addition to her ongoing private practice, Karen is currently directing a feature film about living American artist Michelle Stuart, whose work also engages with the elemental and ineffable nature of existence.RESOURCES:Edgar Allan PoeExit strategy for dying (Karen's monthly newsletter)All the Little DeathsAllen GinsbergKaren's Episode A 'Good Death', Death Doula: Embracing Life & Mortality PART ONEIn Buddhism, death is viewed as a natural part of the life cycle and an opportunity for spiritual growth. The concept is deeply intertwined with the notions of impermanence (anicca) and rebirth (samsara). Rather than being an end, death is seen as a transition, where the energy of one's consciousness continues in a new form, influenced by karma—the cumulative effects of one's actions, thoughts, and intentions. The ultimate goal is to break free from the cycle of death and rebirth through enlightenment, which means reaching a state of liberation (nirvana) where the mind is free from suffering and attachment. Mindfulness and acceptance of death are considered essential practices, as they help individuals live more fully and prepare for the moment of death with clarity and peace.Green burial is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial practices that emphasizes simplicity, sustainability, and minimal impact on the earth. It typically involves using biodegradable materials, avoiding embalming chemicals, and opting for natural settings like conservation areas or designated green cemeteries. The goal is to allow the body to decompose naturally, returning nutrients to the soil, and preserving the surrounding ecosystem.Lambing season in Scotland, typically from March to May, is a busy and vital time on farms, as thousands of lambs are born each spring. This period is crucial for the meat industry, with farmers carefully tending to both ewes and newborns to ensure their health and growth. While lambing is often seen as a symbol of renewal and the start of spring, it is also a time of intense labor and long days for shepherds, who balance the joy of new life with the practical realities of raising livestock for food production.A Dream Within a DreamBY EDGAR ALLAN POETake this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now,Thus much let me avow —You are not wrong, who deemThat my days have been a dream;Yet if hope has flown awayIn a night, or in a day,In a vision, or in none,Is it therefore the less gone?

In this special episode of The Right Intention, its a celebration of the 88th birthday of Wowza, who is a transformative figure in expressive arts therapy and holistic wellness, who has spent over six decades helping people embrace self-expression and healing.Wowza embodies a spirit of agelessness and vitality, which she attributes to connecting with her "larger self" or "the beloved," an inner source of strength that transcends time and societal expectations.Reflecting on her journey, Wowza shares how she transformed a challenging childhood marked by bullying and isolation into a life of beauty and resilience. Embracing her unique path led her to win Miss Florida and become a runner-up in the Miss America pageant. By the time she reached the Miss America stage, she began to feel the limitations of external validation. When she blanked during a final question, she knew her calling was beyond pageants and moved to New York to pursue acting. In New York, Wowza trained at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg, who taught her to embrace every role authentically, integrating light and shadow. This foundation inspired her to create expressive arts therapy, a method allowing people to explore their “social roles” as characters, releasing limiting beliefs and accessing their true essence.Today, Wowza remains a beacon of unity, founding the "Church of Wow" to encourage people to see each other as living art. Her mantra, "wow," reflects wonder without judgment. In relationships, she advocates for balancing masculine and feminine energies, empowering individuals to embody their authentic selves for deeper, harmonious connections. One of her signature practices, “curtain up, curtain down,” helps people briefly embody and release emotions, fostering mindful self-awareness. In her book, The Sacred Actor: Igniting the Performance Art of Living, she invites readers to view life as a divine play, where each role brings meaning within a larger, universal flow. Her "great hum" practice—a simple daily humming—connects people to the vibration of life, grounding them in unity and love.As Todd and Wowza close, they reflect on love as a universal, transformative force. Wowza encourages listeners to embrace every part of themselves, live authentically, and connect with others from the heart. Her journey and wisdom remind us that by living from this larger self, we find freedom and harmony.Connect with Todd Tononi:Follow Todd on Instagram: @ToddTononiSubscribe to The Right Intentions for more thought-provoking conversations and insights into leadership, personal growth, and living with purpose.Connect with Wowza: https://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Actor-Igniting-Performance-Living/dp/B0D2P73WJ8 Hosted on Acast. I think we have all seen the television series “Mission Impossible.” Martin Landau and Barbara Bain had leading roles in that series. Martin was also in Alfred Hitchcock's “North by Northwest,” “Cleopatra” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” He won an Oscar, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award for his role as Bela Lugosi in “Ed Wood.” He was the head of the Actors Studio, beating out Steve McQueen and 500 others who applied. Martin acted alongside his wife, Barbara Bain, in “Mission Impossible.” Barbara won three Emmys for her performance in the show. The couple returned to television in the 70s with a British science-fiction series which they will talk about in this podcast.

Warning: If you prefer to watch a film with a blank slate, don't listen to this episode if you haven't seen or read Killers of the Flower Moon. While it doesn't give away spoilers or information that isn't widely known, and the film itself will be a powerful discovery given the stunning directing, acting, and musical score, it does prepare you for an unforgettable experience with a crash course on the brutal history. Andrea and Terrell Starr of the essential Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack have been watching the rich offering of Best Picture Oscar contenders, and have a lot to say about Killers of the Flower Moon. While it was eclipsed by buzzier films like Oppenheimer and Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon is a monumental masterpiece that explains how America was founded and the forces we are up against today. No one should be surprised by Trump. Trumpism is what founded our country. Killers of the Flower Moon reminds us of the urgent importance and power of art. Today on the show we have legendary actor Lance Henriksen. I had the pleasure of work with Lance on my film Red Princess Blues: Genesis and if was a surreal experience.Lance has been in over 300 films through-out his remarkable career. He's mentored Tarzan, Evel Knievel and the Antichrist, and fought Terminators, Aliens, Predators, Pumpkinhead, Pinhead, Bigfoot, Superman, the Autobots, Mr. T, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. He's worked with directors James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Sidney Lumet, Francois Truffaut, John Huston, Walter Hill, David Fincher, John Woo, Jim Jarmusch and Sam Raimi, but this is just skimming the surface. An intense, versatile actor as adept at playing clean-cut FBI agents as he is psychotic motorcycle-gang leaders, who can go from portraying soulless, murderous vampires to burned-out, world-weary homicide detectives, Lance Henriksen has starred in a variety of films that have allowed him to stretch his talents just about as far as an actor could possibly hope.He played Awful Knoffel in the TNT original movie EVIL KNIEVEL, directed by John Badham and executive produced by Mel Gibson. Henriksen portrayed Awful Knoffel in this project based on the life of the famed daredevil, played by George Eads. Henriksen starred for three seasons (1996-1999) on Millennium, Fox-TV's critically acclaimed series created by Chris Carter (The X-Files).His performance as Frank Black, a retired FBI agent who has the ability to get inside the minds of killers, landed him three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for "Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Drama Series" and a People's Choice Award nomination for "Favorite New TV Male Star."Henriksen was born in New York City. His mother, Margueritte, was a waitress, dance instructor, and model. His father, James Marin Henriksen, who was from Tønsberg, Norway, was a boxer and merchant sailor.Henriksen studied at the Actors Studio and began his career off-Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's Three Plays of the Sea. One of his first film appearances was as an FBI agent in Sidney Lumet's DOG DAY AFTERNOON, followed by parts in Lumet's NETWORK and PRINCE OF THE CITY.He then appeared in Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut, DAMIEN: OMEN II and in Philip Kaufman's THE RIGHT STUFF, in which he played Mercury astronaut Capt. Wally Schirra.James Cameron cast Henriksen in his first directorial effort, PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING, then used him again in THE TERMINATOR and as the android Bishop in the sci-fi classic ALIENS. Sam Raimi cast Henriksen as an outrageously garbed gunfighter in his quirky western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. Henriksen has also appeared in what has developed into a cult classic: Kathryn Bigelow's NEAR DARK, in which he plays the head of a clan of murderous redneck vampires. He was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the TNT original film THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT.In addition to his abilities as an actor, Henriksen is an accomplished painter and potter. His talent as a ceramist has enabled him to create some of the most unusual ceramic artworks available on the art market today. His new film is called Alpha Rift.Nolan Parthmore was just a regular guy, hanging with friends, working his game store, flirting with his co-worker, then one day, destiny came calling. A courier delivers a mysterious antique helmet with no note or description. When Nolan puts it on, his whole world changes. The helmet comes to life and calls out to an evil demon, Lord Dragsmere, who was imprisoned by Nolan's deceased father. Nolan soon discovers he is next in the bloodline, heir to The Nobleman, destined to become a hero whether he wants to be or not. Since the Dark Ages, the Noblemen have been guardians against the 13 Devil's Apostles: dark forces escaped from hell and let loose upon on earth. Generations later, it's the heirs of these original knights that possess the power to open the Alpha Rift:the only defense against these supernatural foes.Enjoy my conversation with Lance Henriksen.

This past year marked the 75th Anniversary of the Actors Studio, the nonprofit organization that has shared “truth in acting” with decades of film, television and theater professionals. This episode is the next in our series celebrating some of those responsible for the studio's success. Guests Roberta and Katherine Wallach are the daughters of stage and screen stars Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach. Jackson and Wallach met during a 1946 production of the Tennessee Williams' play, “This Property Is Condemned.” They became early members of the Actors Studio and would go on to perform together in film, tv and theater for decades. Roberta and Katherine are actors in their own right, members of the studio, and sit on its Board of Directors. Katherine Wallach has appeared in “Goodfellas,” “The King of Comedy” and “Gangs of New York” and also uses her creative talents as a jewelry designer. Roberta Wallach is a Drama-Desk nominee and began her film career while still in high school. The siblings share what it was like growing up around acting royalty, their father's perspective on them going into the family business and their thoughts on their parents' enduring legacy.See omny.fm/listener for privacy information.
This past year marked the 75th Anniversary of the Actors Studio, the nonprofit organization that has shared “truth in acting” with decades of film, television and theater professionals, including some of the biggest names in the business. This episode is the first in a series of conversations with some of those responsible for the studio's success. Alec currently serves as Co-President of the Actors Studio and had the opportunity to speak with two leaders within the institution: Co-President Ellen Burstyn, who joined the studio in 1967, is known for her roles in “Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore,”“The Exorcist,” and “Requiem for A Dream” – and also has the distinction of winning the “Triple Crown of Acting:” an Oscar, a Tony and two Emmy Awards. Alec then speaks with Co-Associate Artistic Director Estelle Parsons, who has been with the studio since 1962. Parsons earned an Academy Award for ”Bonnie and Clyde,” the second film she ever made, and has earned five Tony nominations and two Obies in her illustrious career. The two remarkable women share their stories of finding their way to the Actors Studio and the impact it had on their careers – and their craft. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
