    What's Wrong with True Crime?

This week, “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” is the most watched show on Netflix. It's a dramatized retelling of the life of the serial killer who inspired “Psycho” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” The “Monster” franchise, which includes two earlier seasons about Jeffrey Dahmer and Lyle and Erik Menendez, is one of Netflix's splashiest hits – the Dahmer season is still the fourth-most viewed English language show in the history of the platform. And the true crime obsession only grows each year. On Netflix last year, 15 of the top 20 documentaries were true crime docs, compared to just six in 2020. But what does it mean for the subjects of these documentaries, that Americans endlessly crave stories about murder and bloodshed and terror? John J. Lennon is a contributing editor for Esquire and writes frequently for New York Review of Books and the New York Times. This week, he spoke to host Brooke Gladstone from Sing Sing Correctional Facility, where he's serving his 24th year of his 28-year-to-life sentence for murder, drug sales, and gun possession. They spoke about his new book, The Tragedy of True Crime, what it was like to watch himself get featured in a true crime documentary, and why he wants to upend the typical 'true crime' narratives of good vs. evil.  On the Media is supported by listeners like you. LightSpeed VT: https://www.lightspeedvt.com/ Dropping Bombs Podcast: https://www.droppingbombs.com/ “Cancel culture is powerful because we put up with it.” What if speaking the truth—even when it costs you—was the only way to keep your freedom? In this timeless throwback of Dropping Bombs, the late Charlie Kirk—founder of Turning Point USA and host of The Charlie Kirk Show—goes straight at cancel culture, free speech, and the small actions that actually move the needle. Be the same person in public as you are in private. Vote with your dollars. Build your own audience. Don't let silence hand the mob a win. From Jon Gruden to buy-cotts, school boards, city councils, and the slow grind to reclaim your community—this is a blueprint for courage in real life, not just online.   As a powerhouse conservative voice who mobilized millions of young voters, Charlie doesn't hedge on the hot buttons: life begins at conception, boycotts work, and mindset shifts beat outrage every time. A key Trump ally, Forbes 30 Under 30 alum, and bestselling author (The MAGA Doctrine, Right Wing Revolution), he hammers the playbook: build your own audience, support the good guys, and refuse to let the regime win. If you're done with power games, here's your wake-up call: sacrifice, speak out, and make your actions count—because saving America isn't a quick fix.   Note: This episode has been edited from a conversation that originally aired in 2021.

Boys are falling behind in reading — and the consequences are staggering. In this episode, we share an excerpt from Your Kid’s Next Read podcast with Allison Tait, Megan Daley, Matt Stanton and Dr Justin Coulson unpacking the crisis in boys’ literacy. From screen addiction to motivation, we explore why reading has lost its spark for boys — and how parents can bring stories back to life at home. You can listen to the full conversation here: Boys and Reading. KEY POINTS: Reading rates are plummeting across the board — but boys are struggling most. The literacy gap between boys and girls now equals a full academic year by Year 9. Why screens are hijacking boys’ brains — and how to reset attention spans. The 3 ingredients that make kids want to read: autonomy, competence, and connection. Why dads matter most — boys become readers when they see men reading. The power of reading with your kids, not just telling them to read. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “For boys to love reading, they’ve got to see men who love reading.” — Dr Justin Coulson RESOURCES MENTIONED: Your Kid’s Next Read podcast with Allison Tait & Megan Daley Raising Readers by Megan Daley Punished by Rewards by Alfie Kohn ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Model reading — let your kids catch you with a book. Choose connection over correction — read with them, not at them. Follow their interests — comics, sports magazines, or game guides still count. Build confidence — help your child feel capable with age-appropriate reads. Make it social — talk about stories, characters, and favourite moments. Glenn shows how to measure capacity (what people are truly capable of), see opportunities others miss, and build cultures where individuality accelerates execution instead of getting managed out. If you're done letting the system write your story, this is your wake-up call to break the box, seize the moment, and build your own playbook.

On The Literary Life Podcast this week, our hosts continue with part 2 of their series on Bram Stoker's Dracula. After sharing their commonplace quotes, Angelina, Cindy and Thomas begin discussing how to properly read Dracula and other books written in this tradition. (Hint: It's not the Freudian or psychoanalytical approach!) Angelina argues that Bram Stoker was trying, among other things, to reintroduce the traditional forms and metaphors into the modern era. Thomas shares the dark etymology of the name Dracula and how that relates to the image of Satan in this character. Cindy brings up Jonathan's memory of Mina when he is in his darkest moments and the power of love against evil. Today, we're talking about plants. For years, our diets have been guided by a simple three word slogan: ‘five a day'. While it's well established that eating fruit and vegetables is good for us, some experts believe the ‘five a day' message puts too much emphasis on quantity, and not enough on variety. So, is time to adjust our guiding plant principle? I'm joined by Professor Tim Spector and chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who advocate for a new goal: eating 30 different plants each week. Together, we'll explore why diversity is key for your microbiome and share some delicious ways to bring more plants onto your plate.

I am so excited to say that my guest, returning for his second interview on the GWA Podcast, is the esteemed American writer, critic, and curator, Hilton Als… A staff writer at The New Yorker for over 30 years, and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2017 and a Guggenheim Fellowship for creative writing, Als is the author of numerous books. He is a teaching professor at Berkeley, Last time Als came on the podcast, we discussed two significant artists for him, the photographer, Diane Arbus; and the painter of people, Alice Neel – the latter of whom he has curated exhibitions of, exploring her life in uptown Manhattan, and her various friendships with artists, writers, dancers, neighbours and social activists. 119 But today I meet Hilton on the occasion of a new exhibition he has curated: Postures: Jean Rhys in the Modern World at Michael Werner Gallery in London, which explores the extraordinary and complex life of Creole-British writer, Jean Rhys, born in Dominica in 1890 to plantation owners, who grew up a white person, or Creole, in a largely Black society, and moved to Britain aged 16 and lived most of her life in Europe until her death in 1979. She was known for telling stories of women in exile, often at the whim of powerful men, and celebrated for her last and best-selling novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, published 1966, that told the life story of the so-called mad woman in the attic, Antoinette Cosway, from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, from Cosway's perspective. And what a beautiful, complex, show this is. Featuring Hurvin Anderson, Celia Paul, Gwen John, Sarah Lucas, Kara Walker, and more, it is a rich portrait of a complex figure who lived between worlds, cultures, reality and fiction. And I can't wait to find out more. Postures: Jean Rhys in the Modern World is at Michael Werner Gallery, London, until 22 November. The Vertical Relationship Show: Relationship Goals, Prayer, Biblical Counseling, Dating Advice, Christian Marriage & Healing

A strong prophetic warning: "Pack your bags and leave for exile!" God has had ENOUGH of our rebellion, false loyalties, false prophets and leaders, idolatry, disobedience, and worshipping pagan gods, in particular Baal and Molech. Therefore, judgment must be unleashed; it will NOT be tolerated in God's Kingdom! God is calling for a return to Him alone, a restoration of desolate lands, and the rebuilding of what has been destroyed due to misalignment and falsehood. God is calling people to flee spiritual "Babylon" with the influence of the "north," signaling judgment and the need to return to their true Creator. However, amidst this heedful warning, there's a promise of restoration; four winds are needed! God is raising up "testers of metal" – discerning individuals purified through the blood of Jesus – to help lead the way with God's authority, not man's! Tom Toro has just published a new collection of his New Yorker cartoons, “And to Think We Started as a Book Club.” The cartoons are from the last 15 years his cartoons have been running in the magazine and are grouped in sections, from Life, Love and Family to Work, Tech and Weird. Some comment on modern life wordlessly, like a teenager in the rain holding a mini-umbrella over his phone while he texts. Most combine graphics with commentary, like a man in a ragged suit sitting around a campfire with a few children captioned, “Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders.” Many, like the one pictured above with angels making “snow humans,” are what Toro calls pure palette cleansers, a much needed break from weighty matters of the day. Toro joins us to discuss how he approaches his art and what it’s been like to comment on the last 15 years for one of the nation’s most illustrious magazines on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. The book is out today, and its official launch is at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 10, at Powell's Books.

Political cartoonist Tom Tomorrow (a.k.a. Dan Perkins) is back as we celebrate his new Kickstarter project, OUR LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE (closing Oct. 30, 2025, so GO SUPPORT THAT), collecting 5+ years of weekly This Modern World cartoons! We talk about how he keeps his sanity (well, tries to), what it was like to look back at the past half-decade week by week, why he decided not to go down a rabbit-hole of extra material for the project, and what it means to have a bookshelf of his strips (and not just pixels on a screen). We get into the importance of his Sparky's List newsletter as the media landscape keeps withering away, his writing process and how the, um, of this administration compels him to build some flexibility each week, and the realization that he's made a major body of work over the past four decades. We also discuss his major life changes since we last recorded, the good and bad of Being Very Online, his love of Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko mystery novels, what makes him a New Yorker, and the impossibly fraught question of what brings him joy. Follow Tom Tomorrow on Bluesky and Instagram, subscribe to Sparky's List, and check out his merch from Topatoco and Threadless. Oh, and you can follow This Modern World on TinyView and/or Daily Kos • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Stripe, Patreon, or Paypal, and subscribe to our e-newsletter
