Send us a textThe hardest part isn't the call. It's what your body and mind carry after the sirens fade. We go straight at the myth that strength means silence, and trade it for a practical blueprint to complete the stress cycle, name emotions without fancy language, and rebuild trust through honest conversation.Stephanie Simpson continues to share simple, fast tools first responders can use to process stress on and off scene. We break down why compartmentalizing is necessary in the moment but corrosive if it becomes a lifestyle, and how two-minute rituals—like shaking out the limbs, breath-led resets, or a quick run—help your nervous system return to baseline. When words are hard, we turn to creativity: playlists that mirror your mood, drawing the shape and color of tension, and short journaling bursts that expand emotional vocabulary over time. These practices aren't woo; they are physiology and practicality for police, fire, EMS, dispatch, and anyone supporting them.We also dig into the social side of resilience. Isolation plus workouts can numb; venting without boundaries can spiral. The solution is blending self-soothing with smart connection: candid debriefs, dark humor in safe rooms, and mentors who normalize not knowing. Stephanie explains how coaching pairs with therapy to create forward action, using energy leadership to help you lead your life with intention. For leaders and rookies alike, vulnerability becomes a performance advantage—fewer avoidable errors, tighter teams, and a lighter hidden load.If you're ready to replace “I'm fine” with tools that actually work, hit play. Then share this with your crew, subscribe for more conversations like this, and leave a review to help other first responders find these resources. Got a post-shift ritual that helps you reset? Welcome back to Breadcrumbs & Broomsticks, the Thursday companion to our Heir of Fire season. This is where we step out of the strict chapter-bound analysis, and step into the theory pit. In this spoiler-friendly episode, Jac and Amy read listener submissions and talk through the biggest discourse moment of these chapters: Rowan punching Aelin. We expand on reader reactions, unpack whether this moment earns its place in the arc, and dig into the foreshadowing this scene plants for their future dynamic, trust, and eventual reversal of power. We also chase down theories tied to: Maeve's manipulation & long game (who benefits from restraint?) the symbolism of mist / cold / the moon-white imagery Manon's wyvern introduction + what that unlocks later Dorian, Sorscha, Chaol, and the political fuse that's already quietly smoldering This is where your thoughts get center stage — from “Rowan was unforgivable here” to “this is deliberate low point arc engineering,” to “SJM is mirroring Aelin/Rowan with Manon/wyverns on purpose.” Full spoilers are allowed for all future Heir of Fire chapters and the rest of the Throne of Glass series. The Fire of Christ's Heart: Surrendering to Grace or to the World Today's Homily reflects on a challenging Gospel passage . . . . . . where Jesus says He came not to bring peace but division. The Homily also invites us to linger with difficult Scriptures rather than skip to “favorite parts,” because they reveal essential truths about salvation. St. Paul reminds believers that although Christ has already won victory over sin, we must still freely choose to surrender to God's grace instead of giving in to old habits, emotions, and worldly desires. We Must Still Freely Choose to Surrender to God's Grace Jesus speaks with deep urgency and longing for our salvation, revealing His burning desire to complete His saving mission on the Cross. True peace is not simply avoiding conflict or leaving things as they are; rather, Jesus brings a necessary division between the old life of sin and the new life of grace. Choosing the Kingdom means leaving behind “business as usual,” even when that causes tension within ourselves, our families, or society. Ultimately, life presents only two paths: God's way or the way that leads to emptiness, shame, and death. The Lord calls us to choose the way of life, to surrender to grace, and to walk with Him . . . who gives us strength in the Eucharist . . . to become truly new and free in Him. In this episode, A Nation Tailored in Fire, I explore a powerful teaching from Rav Avigdor Miller about how Hashem created the Jewish people with a fiery nature—stubborn, passionate, and relentless—and then gave us a fiery Torah perfectly suited to that design. Each mitzvah acts like a custom-made suit, shaping and channeling that inner fire toward holiness instead of letting it burn out of control. Our very nature, which can seem difficult or defiant, was intentionally crafted for greatness. By the end of this episode, you'll see how the Torah wasn't given to restrain the Jewish spirit—it was given to refine it and reveal its divine strength.Join the Conversation! Firefighters say they no longer have confidence in their ageing vehicle fleet, and fear they could let them down in life or death situations. They say they have learned to get by, but worry they won't be able to continue plugging the gaps. Fire and Emergency New Zealand says new trucks are on the way, and insists the current trucks are being well maintained. Despite this, the firefighters' union is planning further industrial action, saying FENZ needs to do more. On what's typically one of the busiest nights of the year for firefighters, Guy Fawke's, Checkpoint's Evie Richardson tagged along with one of the country's largest fire crews to see what they're up against.

Every metalhead knows Motorhead for their all out attack playing style with raunchy lyrics that bounces you from one three minute bludgeoning to the next. When Lemmy Kilmister (gravely vocals and lead bass), "Fast" Eddie Clark (lead guitar), and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor recorded Ace of Spades in 1980, the band were hot. 1979 saw the release of Overkill and Bomber, two beloved classics in their catalog, the latter of which going to #12 in the UK. They were making a racket all around Europe and found themselves with the soft-spoken Vic Maile in Jackson's Studios (not our co-host Action Jackson's studio) to make what would become their biggest selling and defining album. From Ace of Spades to The Hammer there are no brakes, no pauses, no ballads, no turning it down. Whether you're gambling day and night (Ace of Spades), making time with the ladies (Love Me Like a Reptile, Fast and Loose, Jailbait) or doing violence in the street (Shoot You in the Back, The Hammer), Lemmy and the boys crush their way through the lens of rough and rowdy real-life rockers. They give a shout out to the young fans who follow them to follow their dreams (Live to Win) and show their love for the guys who live just as hard as they do (We are) the Road Crew) which creates a sense of family and belonging. Fire, Fire and Dance give the audience a chance to shout along The Chase Is Better Than the Catch sums up Lemmy's livestyle succinctly. Hearing Lemmy sing and not just scream is a testament to Vic Maile and what Fast Eddie does with this guitar as Lemmy is occupying that space with his lead bass is why we feel this is the best Motorhead lineup. They may have actually been able to play a bit more than they show but they are all about straight-ahead, white line fever, drink, smoke, rock hard, screw, and do it all again tomorrow. This album is the quintessential Motorhead record and as it turns 45 we give it its due credit. Safety concerns have forced Fire and Emergency to shut down its only live fire training facility for new recruits. NZ Professional Firefighting Union national president Joe Stanley spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Violence against Christians in Nigeria has sparked sudden international attention and debate, with some referring to the ongoing crisis as genocide. In September, news commentator Bill Maher stated that “Islamists and Boko Haram [militants] were systematically killing Christians in Nigeria, attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country.” More recently, U.S. President Donald Trump declared Nigeria “a country of particular concern” and warned of military intervention if the Nigerian government failed to protect its Christian population. However, Nigerian authorities deny the claims that followers of Jesus are being deliberately targeted and that a genocide is underway. In this powerful episode of the Closer to the Fire podcast, Rev. Yunusa Nmadu, the CEO of Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria, joins host Greg Musselman to explore the facts behind the headlines. During the interview, they address the ongoing suffering of believers in Nigeria and examine whether the repeated acts of brutal violence – and the resulting large number of fatalities – amount to genocide. Send us a textWhat if the hardest grief in your life isn't about death, but about change—leaving a team, dropping a title, or stepping away from a community that once defined you? That's where our conversation with coach and educator Stephanie Simpson begins, and it's where many first responders secretly live: in the space between who we were and who we're becoming.Stephanie shares how her evolution from dancer and teacher to professional coach reshaped her understanding of loss. We dig into why “moving on” often backfires and how “moving forward” honors what mattered while making room for growth. Instead of chasing reasons or culprits, we explore a different order of operations: feel first, then learn. Stephanie offers embodied practices—locating sensations, sculpting feelings, and observing them—to shift from intellectualizing to processing. The result isn't soft; it's strategic. Emotions become data you can use under pressure. We also reframe stress for police, fire, EMS, and dispatch. Stress isn't the enemy; unmanaged stress is. Stephanie, who teaches stress science to future first responders, explains how too much strain overwhelms and too little erodes purpose, and why internal stressors—perfectionism, shame, the inner critic—often do more damage than any single call. From Inside Out's portrayal of panic to practical reset routines, we map how to notice, name, and navigate emotions without losing your edge, at work or at home.If you've felt the ache of leaving a role, the pull to find someone to blame, or the pressure to “just get over it,” this conversation offers a more honest path. For more than fifty years, the official story stood unchallenged. Modern forensic science is now putting it to the test. In 1967, Sheriff Buford Pusser and his wife, Pauline, were ambushed on a rural Tennessee road, an attack that inspired the basis for the Walking Tall films. In part 2, Sheryl McCollum continues her conversation with Mike Elam, Jason White, Dennis Hathcock, and Danny Cupples as they revisit the physical evidence and confront the inconsistensies that have haunted this case for decades. For more background on the Pusser case, listen to Sheryl’s previous Zone 7 episodes: Sheriff Buford Pusser: The Other Story Featuring Guest Mike Elam Tennessee Ambush: The Death of Pauline Pusser New Eyewitness Testimony Laid Bare: The Ambush That Killed Pauline Pusser (Part 1 of 2) Highlights: (0:00) Sheryl welcomes listeners to Zone 7 and recaps recent developments in the Pauline Pusser case (1:15) Jason notes that Pauline was never formally examined despite an established coroner system being in place at the time (2:45) Jason explains that the lack of urgency following Pauline’s death defied every norm for an officer-involved homicide (5:15) Mike describes contradictions between Buford Pusser’s official statements and the public storytelling that fueled the “ambush legend” (10:00) The panel discusses unanswered question about ballistic evidence and TBI’s new transparency in the reopened case (13:30) Danny reviews limited medical records describing Pauline’s injuries and challenges the accuracy of the recorded wound descriptions (16:45) Blood-pattern evidence on the car hood contradicts claims that all shots were fired inside the vehicle (19:00) The team examines blood spatter on the car’s hood and notes the lack of motion, raising questions about whether Buford’s wound could have been self-inflicted (24:45) Domestic context: Pauline was preparing to leave; daughter Diane hears a “pop”; Pauline’s shows appear oddly places inside the car (33:30) The discussion turns to whether TBI will review the Louise Hathcock homicide to better understand the broader case context (44:30) Sheryl and guests conclude part 2 with gratitude and perspective, reflecting on how modern forensic analysis and friendship have carried this case forward Guest Bios: Mike Elam is a former Benton County Sheriff’s Deputy and author. His book Buford Pusser: The Other Story traces his own cold case investigation into the 1967 ambush that killed Pauline Pusser. Jason White is a veteran homicide detective with the Tulsa Police Department, a featured investigator on A&E’s The First 48, and the podcast host of KGRA’s Into the Fire. Danny Cupples is Tennessee’s first Chief Death Investigator and a certified forensic death investigator who has trained elite forensic teams in New York. Danny teaches infant death investigations at MTSU and continues to serve on a cold case unit. Dennis Hathcock was a teenager when he saw Sheriff Buford Pusser on the night of the ambush and later discovered critical evidence along New Hope Road. Enjoying Zone 7? Leave a rating and review. Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to running water is an ideal way to turn off all the stressful things life brings, and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds include a river, flowing creek, babbling brook, gentle waves on a lake, and a bamboo fountain. Rain also creates a natural white noise. Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to rain is an ideal way to switch off all the stressful things life brings and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds are rain on an umbrella, hailstorms, hard rain, soft rain, gentle rain, wind and rain, rain on a car.White noise helps babies and children to get a better and deeper night's sleep. This is because external sounds are masked by the noise. With white noise in the background, your child will not hear annoying cars driving by or dogs barking in bed. This allows your little one to sleep better. And it also saves you as a parent a lot of hours!Pink noise is more common in nature than you might expect. It can be compared to continuous rainfall or wind. In addition to white noise, pink noise is also increasing in popularity, especially in business environments. Because it can increase productivity, concentration and creativity.Brown noise can be compared to waves of the sea, a river current, strong winds or the sound of thunder during a storm. Like pink noise, brown noise is very similar to white noise. However, the frequencies have been lowered even further and a lot more concentrated. This gives it a rougher/coarse tone than pink noise. It sounds a bit deeper and a bit bass-like. The benefits of brown noise are the same as the other types of noise. It provides relaxation, increased focus and improved deep sleep.DISCLAIMER: Be aware that loud noises can damage your hearing. If you can't carry on a conversation without raising your voice while playing one of our spheres, the sound may be too loud for your ears. Do not place the speakers directly next to a baby's ears. If you have trouble hearing or ringing in your ears, stop listening to the white noise immediately and see an audiologist or your doctor. The sounds provided by ASMR Sleep Recordings are for entertainment purposes only and are not a treatment for sleep disorders or tinnitus. As European settlers moved onto the Great Plains, they built wooden structures for shelter. These were vulnerable to fires, especially as settlers began building communities with wooden buildings close together. Fire, whether from natural causes like lightning or accidents caused by humans, could destroy an entire town in the blink of an eye.

Pressure isn't punishment — it's purpose. In this inspiring episode of Youth Worker on Fire, Doug Edwards unpacks what it means when God allows pressure in your life and ministry. Drawing lessons from Steve Irwin's family, Luke's precision as a gospel writer, and James 1:2–4, Doug reminds youth pastors, volunteers, and parents that pressure is evidence of God's trust in you—not His disappointment. From the early struggles of student ministry to discovering God's power in weakness, Doug shares how to: ✅ Recognize pressure as preparation, not failure ✅ Stay faithful when ministry feels overwhelming ✅ Tap into God's strength when yours runs out ✅ Find peace knowing God uses pressure to shape your purpose ✅ Lead students with excellence—even under stress
From Saxon arches to Wren's soaring spire, from the rebel hanged at its doors to the golden dragon that's ruled the skyline for three centuries, St Mary-le-Bow has witnessed a thousand years of London life. Its bells gave birth to the Cockneys, its court judged the clergy, and its crypt hides a mystery stretching all the way to Wall Street. Fire, faith, riots and rebirth – this is the story of the church that quite literally defines London.
Demand for the energy storage is as high as ever, and is about to triple-quadruple. The development of technology is at unprecedented phase, and even within a single project you may face different cell, battery or container generations. This pace reshapes how we think about battery energy storage safety, from enclosure design to emergency response. We sat down with Noah Ryder from the Fire and Risk Alliance to unpack how BESS has evolved from walk-in containers to dense, modular “refrigerator” units—and how the move to liquid cooling, tighter layouts, and higher amp-hour cells impacts both opportunity and risk.We explore the real jobs batteries do for the grid: shifting solar and wind, replacing peaker plants, stabilizing frequency, and powering microgrids. Then we zoom into the fast-growing edge case: AI-hungry data centers integrating batteries at the rack level for modularity and speed. That flexibility has a cost. Less free airspace and larger cells mean faster gas accumulation, higher heat flux into insulated enclosures, and a credible explosion hazard from a single failure. We walk through the failure timeline—monitoring anomalies, venting, immediate versus delayed ignition, sustained fire, and potential propagation—and identify practical interventions at each step.Noah lays out the tradeoffs many teams avoid: accept that a damaged unit is a write-off, or try to save modules at all costs? Should we prefer a known flame over an uncertain blast by using intentional spark ignition? How should NFPA 855's push toward gas-triggered mechanical ventilation and deflagration venting influence spacing, panel placement, and vent direction? We also dig into enclosure construction—non-combustible insulation, steel skins, coolant flammability—and how better insulation can safely cut spacing by slowing heat penetration and reducing internal temperature rise.Looking forward, stacking feels inevitable. The smarter approach is to treat batteries not just as a cause but as a fuel, borrowing tested methods from high-rack storage: quantify heat release and radiant exposure, model gas evolution and overpressure, orient vents to manage flame jets, and define acceptable loss before design begins. If you care about real-world energy storage—utility sites, microgrids, or data centers—you'll leave with a clearer framework to make informed, defensible choices. If you would like to learn more about Noah and the Fire and Risk Alliance, you can find them online here: https://fireriskalliance.com/Enjoy the conversation, then subscribe, share this episode with a colleague, and leave a review to help more engineers find the show.----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. Pope Leo XIV has recently formally declared St. John Henry Newman—who was canonized only in 2019 by Pope Francis—a doctor of the Catholic Church, a recognition given only to 37 other saints in Catholicism's over 2000 year history. This places Newman among great figures like St. Augustine, St. Gregory the Great, St. Jerome, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Theresa de Avila, St. Catherine of Sienna, and the Little Flower, St. Therese of Lisieux. What is the significance of giving St. John Henry Newman—an Englishman and Anglican convert to Catholicism who was born over 200 years ago—this title? What is it about Newman's approach to communicating the faith that earned him this great honor—and why now? Equally important, how can contemporary evangelists draw inspiration from his work to proclaim the Gospel in a drastically different world, religiously and morally, from Newman's 19th century Victorian England?
