James Revisited: Brandon Crowe on the Theology of the Letter of JamesThe letter of James has a reputation problem. Luther famously called it an "epistle of straw," and it's long been treated as the New Testament's odd cousin — a collection of practical maxims light on theology and hard to square with Paul on faith and works. In this episode, Chad sits down with Dr. Brandon Crowe, professor of New Testament at Westminster Theological Seminary, to make the case that this neglect has cost the church one of Scripture's richest theological voices.Brandon and Chad work through his book James Revisited: Christology and Biblical Theology in the Letter of James, which reads the epistle not as an outlier but as a text deeply woven into the whole canon — one that refracts the Old Testament through the teaching of Jesus to call believers toward maturity. They discuss James's often-overlooked Christology, the perennial question of faith and works and how it relates to Paul, the place of the law for Christians (fulfilled in Christ yet still abiding), the kingdom of God, and the letter's themes of perfection, hypocrisy, and eschatology. Quentin's prediction is already on the table.Lynda handles the appalling Diane magnificently, gives her a dressing gown and calmly shows her the door, then has a moment of uncomfortable self-reflection about whether she used to be the same. But Caroline's story doesn't stop at the bench. She built her own laboratory, taught dental technology, treated patients clinically, raised a family, and continued pushing herself into digital dentistry. Icarus 17: As director of covert intelligence agency Box 88, Lachlan Kite is at the apex of his espionage career. If Kite fails to save them, the costs – both personal and professional – will be catastrophic.   Charles Cumming is a British writer of spy fiction. Educated at Eton and the University of Edinburgh where he graduatednwith 1st Class Honours in English Literature. The Observer has described him as "the best of the new generation of British spy writers who are taking over where John le Carré and Len Deighton left off". In 1995, Charles Cumming was approached for recruitment by the United Kingdom's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). A Spy By Nature, a novel partly based on his experiences with MI6, was published in 2001. The novel's hero, Alec Milius, is a flawed loner in his early 20s who is recruited by MI6 to sell doctored research data on oil exploration in the Caspian Sea to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 2001, Charles Cumming moved to Madrid. His second novel, The Hidden Man, came out in 2003. The Spanish Game, 2006, Typhoon, 2008, The Trinity Six, 2011. A Foreign Country, 2012, was named the first Scottish Crime Book of the Year at the inaugural Bloody Scotland Festival in Stirling in September 2012. It also won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for the best thriller of 2012. A Colder War, 2014. A Divided Spy, 2016. The Man Between (published in the US as 'The Moroccan Girl') was published in 2018. In 2020 Cumming released BOX 88, followed by JUDAS 62 (2021), KENNEDY 35 (2023) and ICARUS 17 (2026). Charles Cumming was also the screenwriter of the Gerard Butler action movie 'Plane' and was part of the writing team responsible for the first season of the hit TV series 'The Day of the Jackal. Drawing from local archives alongside national and international records, War and Governance in Scotland, 1543-1559: Destruction, Reconstruction and Reform (Edinburgh UP, 2026) by Dr. Amy Blakeway argues that warfare was the defining feature of government and politics in Scotland for the two decades following the death of James V. It demonstrates that beyond the direct effects of invasion, the need to raise unprecedented taxation, as well as warfare's secondary consequences, such as plague and price inflation, disrupted communities throughout Scotland, engendering enhanced social control. These effects endured for many years after the peace of 1550: new laws were passed to manage those who had collaborated with the invaders and taxation remained high.The post-war decade was one of reconstruction, and it was this which drove religious reformation in 1559-60. The book shows that appreciating the scale of the crown's ambition places the Scottish state's development closer to that of its European counterparts. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. These hieroglyphic threats promised strangulation, mutilation, divine judgment, destroyed families, and even attacks by crocodiles and serpents against anyone who violated the dead.From there, 21-year-old Virginia Carpenter vanishes after arriving in Denton, Texas, on June 1, 1948, to attend the Texas State College for Women. Taxi driver Edgar Ray “Jack” Zachary said he left her outside Brackenridge Hall with two unidentified men beside a cream-colored convertible, but Carpenter never checked in, and later leads—including a possible Arkansas sighting and a 1998 burial-site tip—failed to solve the case.Next, the danger moves into space with asteroid 2024 YR4, theories about weaponized asteroid-deflection technology, Cixin Liu's “dark forest” view of hostile alien civilizations, and Fred Hoyle and Chandra Wickramasinghe's idea that viruses could arrive from space. The episode also traces fears of catastrophe from the sky back to the ancient Cosmic Hunt tradition and the Sámi story of an arrow striking the pole star.The episode then descends beneath Edinburgh's Old Town into The Banshee Labyrinth, a rock and metal pub built partly inside the South Bridge vaults. Reports include a screaming banshee in a gray dress, the ghost of a child named Molly who disappeared in 1814, the mischievous Ole Jock in the women's restroom, and unexplained cold spots, moving glasses, and shadows inside the historic underground chambers.From Edinburgh, the story shifts to Meridian, Idaho, where attorney Emmett Corrigan's affair with paralegal Kandi Hall ended in three gunshots outside a Walgreens on March 11, 2011. Kandi's husband, Rob Hall, survived a gunshot wound to the head, Corrigan died from wounds to the heart and skull, and Hall was convicted of second-degree murder in 2012 and sentenced to 30 years in prison.The episode closes with the December 3, 1865 murders of three children at Anton and Amelia Koch's farm near Burlington, Wisconsin, where hired man Peter Frahm was convicted after bloody footprints, blood on his boots, and a stolen coin pouch tied him to the ax killings. Dr. Julia Bailey-Serres is Director of the Center for Plant Cell Biology and Distinguished Professor of Genetics at the University of California, Riverside. She also holds the University of California John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Chair and is Professor of Rice Physiology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. A major focus of Julia's lab is to investigate how plants survive water extremes with the goal of improving the ability of crops to survive a temporary flood. When she's not working, Julia enjoys gardening, hiking, traveling, and spending time with her friends and family. She also has fun baking and cooking with fresh vegetables from her garden. She was awarded her B.S. in biology from the University of Utah and her Ph.D. in botany from the University of Edinburgh. Afterwards, Julia conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley before joining the faculty at UCR. She has received many awards and honors over the course of her career, including being named an elected Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of the American Society of Plant Biologists. In addition, she has been recognized with the Stephen Hales Prize from the American Society of Plant Biologists. In our interview, Julia shares more about her life and research.

Most people visit the reserve by walking along the cliff tops, but recently for a Scotland Outdoors podcast, Helen Needham was lucky enough to experience it from the water on a skiff belonging to the Catterline Coastal Rowing Club. We hear part of her row to take a look at the kittiwakes.Stonehaven Open Air Pool is the UK's only art deco Olympic sized sea water lido. It was opened in 1934 and is run by Aberdeenshire Council along with charity group, Friends of the Pool Stonehaven. Lindsay Clancy saw her psychiatrist fourteen times. Every appointment was a video call. Dr. Jennifer Tufts testified she never observed signs of psychosis and that Lindsay denied wanting to hurt herself or anyone else. On cross-examination, the foundation of that testimony collapsed.Tufts didn't have Lindsay's full medical record during treatment. She never used the Edinburgh screening scale. She was unaware Lindsay had reached out to a suicide hotline on two occasions. Her board certification arrived on the same date Lindsay filled out intake paperwork. The prosecution brought her to the stand to prove Lindsay was mentally stable. Three hours of defense questioning turned that testimony into an exhibit about a healthcare system that evaluated a struggling mother through a screen.Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis examines the prosecution's strategy three weeks into the trial. The state's premeditation theory relies on a single Google search and the timing of a takeout errand. But witness after witness called by the prosecution has described a devoted mother overwhelmed by thirteen medications and unable to get adequate help. In Massachusetts, the prosecution carries the burden of proving criminal responsibility.
