In a world where technology is increasingly intertwined with human emotions, a new frontier is emerging—artificial intelligence that can understand how we feel. Imagine an AI system that doesn't just analyze data but senses our emotional state through the words we choose, the way we describe our experiences, and even how consistently we check in with ourselves. This isn't science fiction. Advances in natural language processing, psychology, and machine learning are making it possible for AI to interpret human emotions with surprising accuracy. Researchers are now using AI-powered systems to classify mood states based on self-reported text, combining insights from neuroscience and behavioral psychology to enhance human decision-making.But how does an AI system detect emotions through words? What psychological theories guide its ability to distinguish between stress, motivation, or disengagement? And could this technology reshape how we interact with machines—perhaps even with one another?Listen For9:46 AI Can Accurately Estimate YOUR Emotional State12:34 AI Detects Emotions Before Humans Do18:41 Is this Ethical?22:48 Answer to Last Episode's Question From Guest Greg WassermanGuest: Michelle Baty, Neuro PsychologistThreads | Instagram | FacebookListen to Michelle on the Stronger by Design podcast with Michelle MacDonaldRate this podcast with just one click Stories and Strategies WebsiteAre you a brand with a podcast that needs support? Contemporary armed conflicts are increasingly complex and, through rapid technological development, increasingly remote. This calls into question the capacity of a machine to apply human emotional traits such as empathy and caution, crucial for effective judgement and evaluation in challenging situations. Despite the precision and reliability that might be achieved through the increased automation of military activities such as target identification, from a humanitarian perspective, outsourcing such high-stakes decisions to machines is highly problematic. In this post, Dr Joanna Wilson, Lecturer in Law at the University of the West of Scotland, calls for the urgent ‘rehumanization' of military decision-making. Emotions play a key role in this. While sometimes blamed for unpredictable, erratic human behaviour, for which a machine might therefore be viewed to be a welcome alternative, emotions are indispensable for effective and flexible moral reasoning, intuition, and self-regulation. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) should thus be exclusively limited to effectively supplementing and facilitating human agency and decision-making: a technological means for strictly human ends.

Research Shows How Dogs are Affected by Human Emotion [caption id="attachment_13446" align="alignleft" width="515"] Author Jennifer Holland with her dog.[/caption] Author Jennifer Holland joins host Laura Reeves to discuss her new book “Dog Smart: Life-Changing Lessons in Canine Intelligence.” This cutting-edge science narrative, chock-full of heartwarming case studies, is one woman's quest to learn the true meaning of dog intelligence and how they are affected by human emotion. Holland interviews trainers and handlers of various working dogs doing their jobs. She was led by a seeing eye dog through the streets of Manhattan and took a sleeve hit in a protection dog training demo. “I have some video of it,” Holland said, “and my head just sort of flops around like a rag doll. And the dog did not want to let go. It took a little while to actually pry him off of me and I got a good bruise. “But again, what I was trying to think about was how you train this animal that, here we've, you know, raised them to be sweet and loving animals. I was told training them to bite a person is a really hard thing to do because they don't necessarily want to do that. “And so it has to be a game. It has to be a game for them. The sleeve is a sleeve. It's not a person and then to be able to train them to stop if they're in mid bite. And here they're getting that thrill and you have to tell them no, the bad guy has waved the white flag. It was remarkable to me that dog can stop and have that self control.” Laura commented that the part of the book that really jumped out at her was research showing that puppies who were given unhappy or negative sweat smell grew up to be unhappy negative puppies. And the ones that were given a happy sweat smell grew into well-adjusted, happy dogs. “(Dogs) are just so affected by us in that way,” Holland added. “Just the importance of our level of stress or for them the feeling that we're feeling good is important to how they respond and how they behave. It just shows that incredible kind of co-evolution that's happened and that bond that we have that really I think makes (dogs) particularly special.”

Send us a textI'm thrilled to share some incredible insights from our latest episode of the "Endless Possibilities Podcast." This time, I had the pleasure of diving deep into the realms of spiritual awakening and energy healing with the brilliant Dorothy Rowe. Here's a sneak peek into the profound lessons and ideas we explored together:Dorothy explains how our bodies act as vehicles for spiritual growth. When we stray from our highest path, illnesses can manifest to guide us back to alignment. Each part of the body symbolizes different aspects of our spiritual journey. For example, issues on the right side may reflect challenges in engaging with our physical reality. The Body's Innate Intelligence:Our bodies possess an incredible intelligence that constantly works towards healing, even when we're unaware of it.Dorothy emphasizes the importance of shifting our mindset from resentment towards illness to curiosity about the lessons it holds. The Power of Thoughts and Emotions:Emotions, even negative ones, can serve as catalysts for healing if they reconnect us with our divine essence.Positive thinking is beneficial, but a deeper connection to wholeness is what truly drives healing.Integrating Eastern and Western Spirituality:Feel empowered to explore your own healing potential with curiosity and compassion.Stay curious and keep exploring the endless possibilities within you!Warm regards, GarethIntroduction to Illness and Spirituality (00:00:00)Welcome to the Podcast (00:00:31)Reintroduction of Dorothy Rowe (00:00:41)Focus on Healing and Illness (00:01:05)Understanding Why People Get Sick (00:02:06)The Body as a Helper (00:02:32)Limitations of Human Perception (00:03:57)The Body's Role in Evolution (00:05:03)Connection Between Body and Spirituality (00:06:13)Illness as a Signal (00:08:28)Addressing Serious Illness (00:09:12)Finding the Lesson in Illness (00:10:35)Healing Intelligence of the Body (00:11:39)Role of Thoughts and Emotions (00:14:12)Range of Human Emotions (00:16:08)Thoughts vs. Deeper Consciousness (00:17:08)Connection to Creation (00:19:43)Positive Thinking and Reality (00:21:10)Survival Emotions and Their Purpose (00:23:16)Health and Union with the Divine (00:24:24)Eastern vs. Western Paradigms (24:29)Humility in Western Spirituality (26:34)Transcendental Love and Silence (27:38)Gut Bacteria and Divine Connection (30:24)Importance of Gut Bacteria (32:30)Hormonal Influence of Gut Bacteria (34:15)Collective Consciousness and Healing (36:33)Sound and Vibration in Healing (40:34)Body as a Vehicle for Awakening (45:02)Understanding the Healing Process (00:47:23)Illness and Misalignment (00:48:38)Healing (00:49:16)Complexity of Healing (00:50:34)Finding the Root of Illness (00:52:01)Separation from Wholeness (00:53:01)Bringing Back to Unity (00:54:14)Awareness as Source Material (00:55:20)Role of the Energy Healer (00:56:15)Co-Creative Healing Process (00:57:29)Intention in Healing (01:00:37)Diagnosing Issues (01:02:09)Using the Pineal Gland (01:05:42)Childhood Trauma and Spiritual Growth (01:07:57)Understanding Ego in Energy Healing (01:09:53)Healing through Love and Truth (01:12:29)The Role of the Nervous System in Healing (01:15:00)Energy Healing During Sleep (01:16:39)Client Willingness and Healing (01:18:33)Remote Healing Sessions (01:19:57)Empowerment through Self-Healing (01:21:35)Synergy in Conversations (01:23:55)Closing Thoughts and Gratitude (01:24:53)https://www.youtube.com/@EndlessPossibilitiesPodcast

“What optogenetics does is it's an engine of discovery. It helps us identify what matters, what's causing things to happen in the brain. And we know now the cells and the connections make these powerful motivations and drives manifest. That opens the door to any kind of new treatment, right? If you know the cells, then you can look at the DNA and the RNA in those cells. You can see what proteins those cells are making, and that gives you clues for medication targets. You can say, okay, this cell has these proteins on its surface, that would give us an idea for a pill, for a medication that might act specifically on that cell that now we know for the first time is causal. It's not just correlated with, it's actually causing these symptoms or the resolution of these symptoms. And if we can now design a medication that targets that cell, we might have a treatment.” So says Karl Deisseroth, a psychiatrist, neuroscientist and bioengineering professor at Stanford. Karl is also the author of Projections: The New Science of Human Emotion, which is a beautiful revisitation and exploration of his time as a psychiatry resident, where he encountered all sorts of people who didn't quite understand what was happening to their brains—and by extension their minds. In the book—and in our conversation today—Karl explores mania, autism spectrum disorder, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, psychopathy, and dementia, all in gorgeous prose. Karl runs a lab at Stanford that focuses on optogenetics, mind-blowing science that can pinpoint where adaptive and maladaptive behaviors begin in the brain. He's won the Kyoto Prize and Heineken Prize for his research, which is not surprising—it just might change the entire world of psychiatry. Today's conversation is far-ranging and it's also surprising, including a conversation about how some of these disorders—like eating disorders, which can be deadly, can also be strangely adaptive. Please stick with us. Human emotion needs expression not suppression. Yes, that means how to express anger, rage, disappointment, grief, sadness, jealousy, and more. Sometimes feeling our feelings in silence and just being an observer is enough. And other times, those emotions need a bit more drama in allowing ourselves to feel with our whole entire body and not just noticing them with our mind. Buckle up. I'm going to get really human in this episode. Today’s episode is with Sean Webb who wrote a book about hacking happiness. Figuring out how to explain how the human mind works has had some interesting side effects. It turns out that the same model Sean uses to explain the human mind to MHH students also has some amazing applications in the world of Artificial Emotional Intelligence. Using his understanding of mind and deep mind, Sean has developed the first ever Algorithms of Human Emotion that are not reliant on biosensors. These will soon to be used to not only create simulated Turing test passing emotional responses in artificial personalities (think; C-3PO), but they will also be used to help create functional empathy and compassion in computer logic and their applications. This will not only make computers more user friendly and emotionally intelligent, it may also just save us from a rogue artificial general intelligence from accidentally or intentionally bringing an end to the human race. Either way, if Sean knows the human mind well enough to help computers understand how our minds work, he can certainly help you learn how to hack yours to your greatest personal benefit. We talk about the following and so much more: ✅What inspired him to write a book about mind hacking and happiness? ✅His personal journey and motivations? ✅ "Mind Hacking Happiness Vol I," and the key concepts it explores. ✅ How is our mind “hackable”? ✅ The "Code of the Human Mind." - what this code is and how it influences our happiness and well-being ✅ How understanding the neuroscience of happiness helps individuals improve their overall quality of life ✅The importance of "inner control" and "emotional regulation."
