Canada Is Erasing Its Own History

The LeDrew Three Minute Interview

Should Canada be ashamed of its own history — or honest about it?In this episode of The LeDrew Three Minute Interview, Stephen LeDrew speaks with Mark Johnson, lawyer, columnist, and founder of Save Our History, about how the Town Council refuses to restore a Sir John A. Macdonald statue in Picton, Ontario.Johnson explains that the statue was originally installed through local fundraising and private support, without cost to the municipality. It recognized Macdonald's connection to Picton, where Canada's first prime minister began his legal career. But in 2021, amid national controversy over residential schools and the Kamloops graves misinformation, the statue was removed and placed in storage. Now, Johnson and Save Our History are pushing for the statue to be returned to public view. The conversation covers:Why the Sir John A. Macdonald statue was removed in PictonThe role of activists and local political pressureWhether Canadian history is being erased instead of debatedThe broader trend of removing statues and renaming public spacesThe controversy over historical figures like Macdonald and ChamplainWhy Johnson believes Canadians should learn from history without hiding itAnd whether local politicians are giving in to pressure instead of public opinionLeDrew and Johnson argue that history should be understood in full — not reduced to present-day political slogans. They acknowledge that historical figures were imperfect, but question whether removing statues helps Canadians understand the country's past.Learn more about Save Our History:saveourhistory.caContribute To Information and Debate that is NOT Paid For, and Influenced,ByThe Carney Government:https://paypal.me/3minuteinterviewCheques accepted at:Stephen LeDrew303 Bay StreetToronto, OntarioM5H 2R1Follow Stephen on other social media platforms.https://www.stephenledrew.ca / stephen.ledrew / stephenledrew Hosted on Acast. Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation near Kamloops, B.C. was the site of a national reckoning over the legacy of residential schools. On May 27, 2021, the First Nation announced it had discovered 215 probable unmarked graves on the ground of a former residential school, using ground-penetrating radar technology. The number was later revised to around 200 probable graves.  Since that revelation, leaders of the First Nation have been reluctant to provide more information and have not yet conducted an archeological dig of the former residential school grounds.  Five years on and with few concrete answers, a loud contingent of skeptics and denialists have grown.  Globe reporters Willow Fiddler and Patrick White join The Decibel to report on what they have learned since, the impact of the initial announcement, the complexities of working on a site like this, and what is planned for the investigation going forward. Frances Widdowson is a Canadian political scientist and former associate professor at Mount Royal University who was fired in 2021 (a termination later ruled disproportionate by an arbitrator) after years of public criticism of Indigenous policy, the “Aboriginal industry,” and what she calls the “Grave Error” narrative surrounding the 2021 Kamloops unmarked-graves announcement. Co-author of the books Disrobing the Aboriginal Industry and Grave Error, she argues that many claims about residential-school mass graves lack forensic evidence and have been exaggerated for political and financial gain. A vocal defender of academic freedom and free speech, Widdowson has faced significant backlash, protests, arrests for trespassing at universities, and accusations of “residential school denialism” for questioning aspects of the residential school system's legacy.Watch the Cornerstone Forum 26'https://shaunnewmanpodcast.substack.com/Silver Gold Bull Links:Website: https://silvergoldbull.ca/Email: SNP@silvergoldbull.comText Grahame: (587) 441-9100Bow Valley Credit UnionBitcoin: www.bowvalleycu.com/en/personal/investing-wealth/bitcoin-gatewayEmail: welcome@BowValleycu.com Expat MoneyExpatmoney.com/SNPGet your voice heard: Text Shaun 587-217-8500

Prior to running provincially, Milobar was a councillor for two terms in Kamloops before winning and sitting as mayor for nine years, from 2008 to 2017.   In an interview with Rob Shaw, Milobar said, “I have a demonstrated skill set to deal with diverse views around a large board of elected officials. And then I know how to interstitch all of that with a government bureaucracy. So I think that very much sets me up well for the challenges facing British Columbia.”   As he enters the race, 10 people have indicated they want the job. Milobar says, “I bring a level of seriousness to the big issues facing BC. The biggest being the economy and its direct impact on affordability, crime, education and real estate.” As well, Milobar says, “I am uniquely qualified to address reconciliation in BC, and the manner in which Premier Eby and his party are addressing it, is counterproductive.”   We invited Conservative Party of BC leadership candidate Peter Milobar to join us for a Conversation That Matters about his vision for the party and the province.   You can see the interview here https://www.conversationsthatmatter.ca/ Learn More about our guests career at careersthatmatter.ca

BC Law Society Defamation Claim and Boat Storage After Death

Legally Speaking with Michael Mulligan

A  hyperlink and headline can change the stakes of a professional disagreement. We talk through a Victoria-based defamation lawsuit against the Law Society of British Columbia after a lawyer proposes changing mandatory Indigenous cultural competency training language about the Kamloops residential school from an asserted discovery of 215 bodies to wording focused on potential unmarked burial sites. When the Law Society links to a statement titled “Racist Resolution,” the dispute moves from policy and training content into reputational harm, defamation law, and what it means for a regulator to speak publicly during controversy. From there, we dig into the mechanics that actually drive cases forward: pleadings, applications to strike “scandalous” material, and why a judge would order certain loaded words removed before a jury trial. We also connect the litigation to bigger governance questions in BC, including the Legal Professions Act and the push to embed reconciliation and UNDRIP implementation into the Law Society's core duties, alongside concerns about preserving the independence of the legal profession from government control. Then we switch gears to a surprisingly human problem with very real dollars attached: a liveaboard boat owner dies, the vessel sits in a Victoria marina for months, and the marina uses lien legislation under the Commercial Liens Act to secure payment and move toward sale. We unpack what counts as “storage,” why shore power can be essential, and how a redacted legal bill can backfire when a judge needs evidence to assess fairness and avoid double recovery. If you care about Canadian defamation law, lawyer regulation in British Columbia, Indigenous reconciliation policy, UNDRIP, or practical disputes like marina liens and moorage fees, you'll want to hear how these decisions get made. Subscribe, share the show with a friend, leave a review, and tell us: when institutions speak, how careful do they have to be with their words?Follow this link for a transcript of the show and links to the cases discussed.

Ted's story begins in Trail — steel town grit, river valley air, small-town backbone.Raised in the Kootenays, Ted carried that work ethic west to Vancouver, graduating from UBC, and deciding school wasn't for him, he worked as a doorman and later as an arborist. Hard jobs. Outside jobs. Jobs that keep a man moving. He found the love of his life in his late 30s. That's important. Some men rush it. Ted didn't. When he found her, he went all in.And then came the dogs. Not casual pet ownership. Obsession. Bird dogs. Trialing dogs. Training days that turned into full seasons. Upland fields, early frost, heart pounding at the flush. Life was busy. Full. Loud in the best way.Somewhere in there, fly fishing grabbed him. And when it did, it didn't let go.Ted started spending every spare minute around the lakes near Kamloops — stillwater country. Long casts. Chironomids. Watching the wind ripple across glassy mornings. The best advice he ever received?“If you can't cast further, move your boat.”Simple. Tactical. But also philosophical. When the distance won't close — adjust your position. The Move That Changed EverythingAfter retirement, Ted and his wife moved to Alberta to be closer to their daughter. A hopeful move. A family move.Shortly after arriving, his wife was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.Life stopped. For four years, Ted drove her to chemo. Sat in hospital rooms. Lived in waiting areas. The river disappeared. The dogs went quiet. The boat stayed parked.Everything paused. After she passed, the house felt different. The days stretched longer. And then something shifted.Ted found a group of men. Found community again. And he found the river.Standing in current on the Bow River, something came back online. Not instantly. Not dramatically. But steadily. The Bow gave him rhythm again. Walking local streams gave him breath again.Fly fishing didn't erase grief. It gave it somewhere to go.What Ted Believes NowAt 74, Ted doesn't sugarcoat it.Life is not guaranteed. His advice is direct:“Don't wait. If you can retire — retire. Go live your life.”Not reckless. Not impulsive.Intentional.Move the boat.If something isn't working — change position. Change perspective. Change seasons. But don't sit still waiting for perfect conditions.Because perfect conditions don't exist. This episode isn't about tragedy. It's about a man who loved deeply. Worked hard. Lost greatly. And walked back into the river anyway. And that's the kind of story that matters.

This podcast is me reading a little book I put out earlier this year: CANADA IS AWESOME It's an audio book about all the weird, wonderful, beautiful things that make Canada ... Canada. Did you ever notice Canadians speak in the collective? "What do you think of the weather we're having?" "Shall we grab a Timmy's before the meeting?" "Think we have a shot at the playoffs?" We, we, we. We use the word we so much. Why do we feel like such a collective? I don't think it's complicated. I think it's because we are one. We all toss around half of everything we make into a big glass jar and use it to pay for everyone's health care, education, and services. Sure, the system's never perfect, but if you shatter your ankle in an icy Canadian Tire parking lot, need a dozen years of free school for five kids in Kamloops, or want to drive on freshly snowplowed roads from Comox to Cornwall to Cape Spear, well ... we got you. We got you. We got everyone. This is a different type of book than I've done before—in addition to this audiobook (totally free, right here) I also posted in its entirety on my blog (totally free) in HTML and PDF: HTML: https://www.neil.blog/canada-is-awesome PDF: https://www.neil.blog/s/NP_CIA_wCOVER.pdf I also made a 78-page, bright red, self-published hardcover (with colour photos) and paperback (available on Prime, but black and white photos.) HARDCOVER: https://a.co/d/8vjssD3 PAPERBACK: https://a.co/d/aCYDAh6 I made these books at cost so the price you see on your local Amazon page is the same as it costs me to make them.  This book was designed by a Canadian in Ottawa (Steve St. Pierre) and the audio and video edited by a Canadian in Toronto (Dave Boire), and even the T-shirt I'm wearing in the YouTube video was designed and manufactured by a Canadian in Toronto (Daniel Torjman), who was also a past guest on the pod: https://www.3books.co/chapters/94 If you're Canadian I hope this holiday season this books help you feel pride in who we are. If you're not Canadian, I hope this helps you see Canada a little clearer. Maybe it will inspire you to visit ... or to move here! (My hood is filling up with Americans like mad these days.)  Flip this on for your long road trip and let's let ourselves get inspired by what's possible when grit, determination, and kindness come together across culture and language. Let's reflect on shared goals of spending time with loved ones, hitting best-in-world education rates, and, of course, kicking back by the lake with a Moosehead and a bowl of ketchup chips. This is a piece of writing close to my heart and something I have been working on for over a decade. I hope you like it.  And, if you do, share it with someone else.  Happy holidays, eh!  Neil

Mentor Sessions Ep. 042: Canada's Real Estate Horror Exposed: Unceded Land Claims Spark Massive Housing Crash – Why Top Expert Stacks Bitcoin | Steve Saretsky (Loonie Hour)Canada's real estate empire is crumbling. In this explosive interview, top Vancouver realtor and Loonie Hour co-host Steve Saretsky reveals how a single BC Supreme Court ruling on unceded territory has made 150+ homes unfinanceable overnight, sparking a wave of aboriginal land claims that could engulf entire cities like Kamloops and even Parliament Hill. With 90% of British Columbia on unceded land, property rights are under siege—lenders are bailing, sales are tanking, and national house prices have plunged 18%, the sharpest correction in 30 years. Steve breaks down why this housing crash is bigger than 2008, with Toronto condo sales hitting record lows and Vancouver homes now costing just 8 Bitcoin (down from 2,350 in 2015). As investors flee cashflow-negative rentals amid strict tenancy laws and soaring rates, Steve explains his Bitcoin bull stance: it's the ultimate hedge against fiat debasement and property chaos. Don't miss this wake-up call on why Bitcoin trumps bricks in a broken system.Chapters:00:00 Teaser00:01:25 Intro & Richmond BC Aboriginal Claims00:01:53 Background on Unceded Territory & Treaties00:03:54 Co-Existing Titles Dilemma00:04:49 Lender Reluctance & Financeability Issues00:05:35 Lands Unsaleable Without Discounts00:07:24 Emerging Claims Across BC & Canada00:08:08 Kamloops Entire City Under Dispute00:08:30 Ottawa/Quebec Bands Inspired by Ruling00:09:23 Parliament Hill on Unceded Land?00:09:30 Rectifying the Crisis & Government Response00:10:01 Property Taxes Lawsuit Implications00:10:40 BC Real Estate's GDP Impact & Slowdown00:12:08 New Construction Collapse00:13:54 Investor Pullback & Sales Data00:14:36 Seller Price Resistance & Market Freeze00:15:19 Sharpest Correction in 30 Years00:16:20 Bank Massaging DefaultsAbout Steve Saretsky:Top Vancouver realtor, real estate investor, and co-host of The Loonie Hour podcast. Part 1: Frances Widdowson joins us to discuss her recent arrest at the University of Victoria, the growing political backlash she faces for questioning the official narrative around the 215 “unmarked graves” at Kamloops, and why attempts to open evidence-based discussion on residential-school graves are being shut down on Canadian campuses.Part 2: Tom Flanagan joins the conversation as we examine the collective guilt being imposed on Canadians, the implications of the recent Cowichan Tribes court decision, and what these developments mean for free speech, historical truth, and the future direction of the country.Frances Widdowson is a Canadian political scientist and former associate professor at Mount Royal University who was fired in 2021 (a termination later ruled disproportionate by an arbitrator) after years of public criticism of Indigenous policy, the “Aboriginal industry,” and what she calls the “Grave Error” narrative surrounding the 2021 Kamloops unmarked-graves announcement. Co-author of the books Disrobing the Aboriginal Industry and Grave Error, she argues that many claims about residential-school mass graves lack forensic evidence and have been exaggerated for political and financial gain.Tom Flanagan is a Canadian professor emeritus at the University of Calgary; former advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Author of books on Métis history (e.g., The Diaries of Louis Riel, 1976) and libertarian policy critiques on aboriginal land claims. Senior Fellow at the Fraser Institute; elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1996. Recently co-authored Dead Wrong on residential schools, sparking debate on unmarked graves.Tickets to Cornerstone Forum 26': https://www.showpass.com/cornerstone26/Tickets to the Mashspiel:https://www.showpass.com/mashspiel/Silver Gold Bull Links:Website: https://silvergoldbull.ca/Email: SNP@silvergoldbull.comText Grahame: (587) 441-9100Bow Valley Credit UnionBitcoin: www.bowvalleycu.com/en/personal/investing-wealth/bitcoin-gatewayEmail: welcome@BowValleycu.com Prophet River Links:Website: store.prophetriver.com/Email: SNP@prophetriver.comUse the code “SNP” on all ordersGet your voice heard: Text Shaun 587-217-8500

In October, seven OBGYNs at a Kamloops, B.C. hospital signed a letter of resignation. Those seven were the only OBGYNs in the city. We're used to bad headlines about Canada's healthcare system. Lack of family doctors, emergency room wait times, delayed procedures, but this was different. Mass resignation threatening an entire branch of treatment for the whole city. The letter of resignation is effectively a protest, a warning. The physicians who signed it say their workload is untenable and is placing patients at risk. The resignations will be staggered over the coming months and the provincial government is taking a variety of steps to deal with the fallout. Including offering temporary replacement doctors over $7000 a day to take shifts in Kamloops. Kristen Holliday is the regional editor for Castanet News in Kamloops. She joins us today to unpack the mass resignation.Host: Bruce ThorsonCredits: Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor & Technical Producer), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), max collins (Director of Audio), Jesse Brown (Editor and Publisher)Featured Guest: Kristen HollidayFact checking by Julian AbrahamAdditional music by Audio NetworkMore information:Plan for pediatrics at Kelowna General Hospital sent to ministry as doctor concerns get heard — CastanetDoctor shortage forces another closure of Kamloops' busiest maternity clinic — Castanet7 OB/GYNs resign from Kamloops hospital due to safety concerns — Global NewsInterior Health willing to pay more than $7K per day to fill maternity shifts at Kamloops hospital — CastanetToo Many Canadians Are Leaving Emergency Rooms Untreated — MEISponsors: CAMH Douglas: Douglas is giving our listeners a FREE Sleep Bundle with each mattress purchase.
