Woke is out at the Department of War, and higher fitness standards are back. Since being sworn in as secretary, Pete Hegseth has acted to “removed the distractions” from the department, including getting rid of “political correctness” and “DEI offices.” “No more dudes in dresses,” Hegseth said during a recent speech, adding, “we are restoring a ruthless, dispassionate, and common-sense application of standards.” Amid the Department of War's implementation of common-sense politics and higher fitness standards, more women have chosen to enlist in the U.S. military. Over the summer, the Department of War, which was recently renamed from the Department of Defense, announced about 24,000 women were shipped off to basic training in fiscal year 2025, up from about 16,700 in 2024. Women want to be held to high standards, and that includes in military fitness, Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson says on this week's edition of “Problematic Women.” Wilson joins the show to pull back the curtain on life at the Pentagon under Hegseth's leadership, and explain the departments aggressive strategy behind defeating narco-terrorists. Also on this week's edition of “Problematic Women,” we discuss who “won” the government shutdown battle. Send us a textDr. Joseph Loconte joins Joe for a powerful exploration of faith, imagination, and courage in times of crisis—how two Oxford professors used story to resist the darkness of their age and inspire generations to come.As a historian and author of The War for Middle-earth: J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis Confront the Gathering Storm, 1933–1945, Dr. Loconte reveals how the trauma of the First World War and the rise of totalitarianism shaped the moral imagination of both Tolkien and Lewis. While fascism, communism, and nihilism were eroding meaning across Europe, these two friends responded with mythic tales that reawakened the timeless virtues of courage, friendship, sacrifice, and faith. In this conversation, Joe and Dr. Loconte unpack what it means to lead with conviction in an age of cynicism—how to confront “the gathering storm” of fear and confusion not through force, but through imagination, integrity, and truth. They explore how literature can serve as resistance, how belief can ground moral clarity, and why cultivating the inner life is essential for any leader facing dark times.Listeners will come away with a deeper understanding of the moral lessons behind The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia—and how these works still speak to the leaders, soldiers, and citizens called to stand in the breach today. In this episode, Joe and Dr. Loconte also explore:How the First World War shaped Tolkien and Lewis's understanding of evil and heroismWhy the 1920s and 1930s created a “crisis of meaning” across the Western worldHow their friendship became a creative alliance and a moral counteroffensiveWhy The Hobbit and The Chronicles of Narnia are, at their core, acts of defiance against despairWhat “the cataract of nonsense” teaches us about propaganda and the need for historical literacyThe spiritual courage required to use one's gifts—even when the world seems to be falling apartHow both men modeled leadership through faith, fellowship, and imaginationWhether you're leading in the military, education, or business, this episode offers timeless lessons on how conviction, creativity, and courage can help us navigate our own modern storms—and remind us that even in the darkest times, grace and goodness still have the final word.A Special Thanks to Our Sponsors!Veteran-founded Adyton. Author and documentary filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza joins the program to tackle one of the hardest and most emotionally charged subjects of our time, the Gaza–Israeli conflict. While we don't agree on every point, D'Souza and I engage in a respectful, thoughtful dialogue aimed at uncovering clarity, context, and possible paths toward stability in a region defined by complexity and pain. We discuss the historical roots of the conflict, the global forces that keep it alive, and the moral contradictions facing both sides. D'Souza also shares insight into his new documentary film, A Dragon's Prophecy — a powerful exploration of the ongoing struggles and competing narratives shaping the Middle East today.Learn more about the film and its message at https://TheDragonsProphecyFilm.comSee exclusives and more at https://SarahWestall.Substack.com

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we discuss Richard Linklater! He's an American indie legend who we recently just spoke to! With two new films out here at the end of 2025 (Blue Moon and Nouvelle Vague), we discuss his B-Sides: SubUrbia, The Newton Boys, Me and Orson Welles, and Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood. Our guest is Ryland Aldrich, our dear friend, an accomplished producer and experienced writer on film, as well as the creator of FYCit App,“the number one smartphone app for awards voters and guild members to find awards screenings, events, and content for all the season's top contenders.” Conor, Ryland, and I dig into our love for Linklater, the highs and lows of his long, accomplished career, and his continued improvement as a stylist. We debate Ethan Hawke's chances of getting an Oscar nomination for his Blue Moon performance, the lasting cultural relevance of School of Rock, and Orson Welles' famous response to a question about Elia Kazan many years ago. There's also mention of the Mercury Theater's famous 1938 broadcast of “The War of the Worlds,” the documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, and those real-life clips of The Newton Boys.
From the acclaimed author of 1177 B.C., a spellbinding account of the archaeological find that opened a window onto the vibrant diplomatic world of the ancient Near East In 1887, an Egyptian woman made an astonishing discovery among the ruins of the heretic king Akhenaten's capital city, a site now known as Amarna. She found a cache of cuneiform tablets, nearly four hundred in all, that included correspondence between the pharaohs and the mightiest powers of the day, such as the Hittites, Babylonians, and Assyrians. Love, War, and Diplomacy: The Discovery of the Amarna Letters and the Bronze Age World They Revealed (Princeton University Press, 2025) tells the story of the Amarna Letters and the dramatic world of the Bronze Age they revealed. Blending scholarly expertise with painstaking detective work, Eric Cline describes the spectacular discovery, the fierce competition among dealers and museums to acquire the tablets, and the race by British and German scholars to translate them. Dating to the middle of the fourteenth century BCE and the time of Tutankhamun's immediate predecessors, Amenhotep III and his son Akhenaten, the Amarna Letters are the only royal archive from New Kingdom Egypt known to exist. In them, we learn of royal marriages, diplomatic negotiations, gift-giving, intrigue, and declarations of brotherly love between powerful rulers as well as demands made by the petty kings in Canaan who owed allegiance to Egypt's pharaohs. A monumental achievement, Love, War, and Diplomacy transports readers to the glorious age of the Amarna Letters and the colonial era that brought them to light and reveals how the politics, posturing, and international intrigues of the ancient Near East are not so unlike today's. Taylor Kolls Marine Combat Vet and son of Jay shares his experience in Afghan war and why it should Veterans Week not Veterans Day.Operation Moshtarak (Dari for Together or Joint), also known as the Battle of Marjah, was an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) pacification offensive in the town of Marjah, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. It involved a combined total of 15,000 Afghan, American, British, Canadian, Danish, and Estonian troops, constituting the largest joint operation of the War in Afghanistan up to that point. The purpose of the operation was to remove the Taliban from Marja, thus eliminating the last Taliban stronghold in central Helmand Province.[10] The main target of the offensive was the town of Marjah, which had been controlled for years by the Taliban as well as drug traffickers.Although Moshtarak was described as the largest operation in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban, it was originally supposed to be the prelude to a much larger offensive in Kandahar that would follow Moshtarak by several months.[11] ISAF chose to heavily publicize the operation before it was launched, comparing its scope and size to the 2004 Second Battle of Fallujah, in the hopes that Taliban fighters in the town would flee.[12]The operation was also designed to showcase improvements in both the Afghan government and Afghan security forces. ISAF claimed that the operation was "Afghan-led" and would use five Afghan brigades.[13] General Stanley A. McChrystal, the commander of ISAF, also promised that following the offensive ISAF would install a "government in a box" in Marja.[14]While initially successful, ISAF and the Afghan government failed to set up a working government in the town, leading to a successful resurgence by the Taliban; 90 days into the offensive General McChrystal famously referred to it as a "bleeding ulcer".[15][16] In October the town was still described as "troubling",[17] but by early December the fighting there was declared "essentially over".[18]Shortly after the withdrawal of NATO soldiers from Marja, it was reported the Taliban had regained control of the town and district with US army analysts describing the goals of the operation as a failure.[1] It has later been cited as a critical turning point in the war, as its failure lead the Obama administration to shift in strategy, away from increasing the number of American combatants for a decisive victory and toward deescalation of the war.[19]https://www.tucsonsentinel.com/nationworld/report/021510_marjah/afghan-battle-marjah-might-not-live-up-hype/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

2025-11-13 | Silicon Wafers 054 | DAILY UPDATES | In today's episode we turn our focus to the Eastern front and try to tease out the truth from the tangled narratives emerging from the battle for Pokrovsk. This is a grinding struggle that seems to be entering its final stages, but the ever-shifting balance of the fight seems to be as much about controlling the narrative as it is about occupying territory. We're zeroing in on the contested city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast — still under Ukrainian control, but also still under relentless Russian pressure — and we'll cover the neglected frontline, in the neighbouring Zaporizhzhia Oblast, which is simultaneously seeing a push by Moscow's forces. These two theatres matter: because while all eyes are drawn to Pokrovsk, where Russia hopes to punch a breakthrough and Ukraine hopes to hold the line, Moscow is quietly advancing elsewhere, threatening to exploit the distraction. What, then, counts as “victory” for Russia when so much manpower and materiel is being expended to lay claim to a city that has essentially been reduced to rubble? In a way of attrition, can one side claim any kind of victory, when the price of defence is so high and the cost of attack so monstrously and irrationally large? ----------SOURCES: “Pokrovsk is not captured but remains Russia's main offensive target, Syrskyi says”, Kyiv Independent, 13 Nov 2025“Analysis: With all eyes on Pokrovsk, Russia drives forward in Zaporizhzhia Oblast”, Kyiv Independent, 12 Nov 2025“Ukraine withdraws from another settlement in Zaporizhzhia Oblast amid ongoing Russian offensive”, Kyiv Independent, 11 Nov 2025“Ukrainian forces pull back under fierce Russian pressure in Zaporizhzhia”, Al Jazeera, 12 Nov 2025“The situation is quite difficult — Russia captures 3 settlements in Zaporizhzhia Oblast amid ‘intense fighting'”, Kyiv Independent, 11 Nov 2025“War in Ukraine: Battle for Pokrovsk enters final phase”, Le Monde, 6 Nov 2025“Russia makes gains in southern Ukraine as it expands front-line attacks”, Associated Press, 12 Nov 2025“Ukraine deploys special forces to Pokrovsk in effort to hold key city”, The Guardian, 2 Nov 2025“Ukraine's top general denies encirclement claims in battle for Pokrovsk”, The Moscow Times, 13 Nov 2025“Ukraine withdraws from positions near five settlements in Zaporizhzhia region”, Ukrinform, 11 Nov 2025----------SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISERA project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's front-line towns.https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur events of the first half of the year in Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa were a huge success.
