The global economy is in a tumultuous state, inflation has carved away everyone's purchasing power, and prices are almost universally going up. So naturally, PlayStation will follow suit and jack its rates up too, right? Well, no. Instead, they're doing the exact opposite of what seems natural: For their annual, weeks-long Days of Play sales event, Sony has slashed prices on PS5 and PS5 Pro, PSVR2 and DualSense, and even DualSense Edge and the Access controller. Is Sony's boldness in risking economic erosion worth it? Is its strategy simply to put its boot on Xbox's neck once and for all? We discuss. Plus: If all went according to plan, The Order: 1886 would have gotten two sequels, EA cancels its Black Panther project while shutting down the studio behind it, Build A Rocket Boy suggests there may be a paid, organized campaign against its upcoming title MindsEye, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What does Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's success mean for the future of global JRPGs? Could Star Wars Battlefront be revived on the basis of a recent resurgence in popularity? Is Colin ignoring an obvious connection between Souls games and his beloved Castlevania? Should we invest thousands in a commemorative Concord plaque, currently for sale on an online auction site? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. Baldur's Gate 3 dev calls Randy Pitchford's $80 Borderlands 4 comments "gross" because it implies the FPS is more important than "making it day to day" "Real fans are people who love & understand what you do, keep track, and engage with your shit regardless of how much they spend," Douse added. When asked whether Baldur's Gate 3 would also have had a $80 asking price, Douse said even if it did, "we would probably not suggest people do whatever they can to buy it, lest they not be real fans." ‘Marathon' Isn't Canceled, But It's Bad We Even Have To Ask That Colin Moriarity: “I was told by someone familiar with marketing plans in a key overseas market that there are now no plans to do paid marketing for Marathon at all, I don't know if those plans were affected by what has recently happened or if that was always the plan or whatever but it is considered a fairly unusual move for a game of this high profile.” Mortal Kombat 1: We are hearing players' requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on. We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can. ***AUDIO ISSUES IN THIS EPISODE*** We apologize in advance. Our recording software messed up. Listen to our other episodes to hear the quality we typically bring. This is not a representative episode. Apologies to our listener. Episode 379 – “Final Boss Breakdown”Fred's well over 70 hours into Octopath Traveler II and stuck on the true final boss—his patience is wearing thin, and if this boss doesn't go down soon, he's threatening to leap off a cliff. Meanwhile, Jake's still deep in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and holding off on DOOM: The Dark Ages until he wraps up that beautifully strange ride.We did get some listener feedback this week, mostly someone roasting us for using AI. (Fair enough—we're still humans with mics, we promise.)In the news, the June PS Plus titles were announced and it's a stacked lineup: NBA 2K25, Alone in the Dark, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, and Destiny 2: The Final Shape (dropping May 28). Also this week, the FTC officially dropped its long-standing challenge against Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Microsoft is calling it a win for players and, in a timely coincidence, Hellblade 2 has been confirmed for a PS5 release. There's talk of a State of Play hitting in June, though insiders say it'll be smaller in scale and likely follow Summer Game Fest. Sony also announced it's shutting down the PlayStation Stars rewards program, which honestly never really took off. New signups are done, and it'll fully close in November 2026.Elsewhere, Cyberpunk 2077's sequel—codenamed Orion—will return to Night City and introduce a gritty new setting described as “Chicago gone wrong.” And in weird news, Clair Obscur has somehow sold 3.3 million copies in 33 days. Is this real life?Lastly, if you're hardware shopping, Sony is dropping $50 off the PS5 Pro through June 11th via PlayStation Direct.Good time to jump in.By joining our Patreon community for ONLY $1.00 per month, you'll also enjoy these exclusive benefits:Early Access: Be the first to listen to our episodes as soon as they're ready. A delegation of 140 of Ireland's top entrepreneurs, including tech entrepreneurs Liam Dunne of Klearcom, Gareth Sheridan of Nutriband Inc., Alan Doyle of Aerlytix, Eddie Dillon of CreditLogic and Conor Buckley of Granite Digital, are this week travelling to Japan for the annual EY Entrepreneur Of The Year CEO Retreat. Running from Monday 26th to Saturday 31st May, the retreat will see the entrepreneurs travel between Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto as they participate in a comprehensive programme of executive coaching, education and networking, while also experiencing Japan's vibrant culture and traditions. This year's retreat will visit sites of major business, academic and diplomatic importance across Japan. Key visits will include SoftBank Corporation HQ where the group will meet with SoftBank President Kunihiro Fujinaga and Executive Vice President Daichi Nozaki, a 'Mini MBA' experience at Hitotsubashi University, delivered by leading Japanese academics Professor Yoshinori Fujikawa and Professor Hiroshi Ono, and Ireland House Tokyo, the centre of Ireland's diplomatic relations in Japan, where the group will meet with Ambassador of Ireland to Japan, Damien Cole. Later in the week, the group will immerse themselves in Japanese culture in Kyoto before concluding with a visit to the World Expo in Osaka. Japan is the world's fourth largest economy with enduring strengths in areas including innovation, technology, automotive and manufacturing. The existing trade relationship between Ireland and Japan is strong, with Japan positioned as Ireland's second-largest trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region. Many of the entrepreneurs travelling to Japan are already conducting business there, while others are seeking to expand their markets. The delegation includes this year's 24 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists as well as programme alumni representing a broad spectrum of industries and representatives from Enterprise Ireland, Invest Northern Ireland and Julius Baer International. Roger Wallace, Partner Lead for EY Entrepreneur Of The Year, said: "The CEO retreat is one of the highlights of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year programme and this year we are taking the biggest ever cohort of entrepreneurs on the retreat to Japan, for what will be Ireland's largest annual unofficial trade mission. Supported by Enterprise Ireland, Invest NI, and Julius Baer, our 140 entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to meet with local business leaders, academics and experts while also experiencing Japan's vibrant culture and traditions. "Japan is renowned as an innovative leader across various industries, including manufacturing, electronics, automotive and robotics, with world-class Japanese companies such as Sony, Honda, and Yamaha. It is a country rich in opportunity for entrepreneurs looking to expand beyond traditional markets and into the wider Asia-Pacific region, an area which continues to move from strength to strength. This retreat is an opportunity for Irish entrepreneurs to delve deeper into new market opportunities in Japan and expand their knowledge of business and trade in the region. "More broadly, our CEO Retreat is designed to enable entrepreneurs to have the space to step back, engage with their peers and think differently, to embrace new ideas and to push themselves even further. The retreat is also an opportunity for entrepreneurs to deepen business relationships with fellow participants, often leading to fruitful collaborations, which is a core element of the Entrepreneur Of The Year programme. We hope the retreat will inspire and energise our entrepreneurs and may even be the spark that ignites some great new and exciting business possibilities for this talented group of business leaders." Since its inception, the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Ireland community has grown into a tight-knit network of 650 alumni who harness each other's wealth of experience, with three-quarters (75%) conducting business with one another. Together, the ...

The last couple of weeks for Bungie have been nothing short of catastrophic, calling into question whether their upcoming extraction shooter Marathon has any chance at all in finding market success. We've long discussed whether Sony should have bought Bungie at all (they shouldn't have), but now that they're so deeply invested, how do they get the team out of this mess? And what does all of this hullabaloo -- about stolen art, poorly-reviewed gameplay, and lackluster audience reaction -- say about the team's future, full stop? Meanwhile, things aren't much better north of the border, where Quebec-based Haven recently parted ways with founder and once-famous producer Jade Raymond, who has now left three different teams without any sort of release. Is Fairgame$ DOA? Maybe not, but we have lots of new information on the recent closed test of the game under the moniker Project Hearts, and... well... it's not sounding great. Also: MLB: The Show is seemingly getting a mobile release, PlayStation Stars is going away unceremoniously, Stellar Blade 2 is in active development, Xbox's Hellblade II is coming to PS5, Kojima's Physint is at least five more years away, and more. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Dr. Marianne Cooper. Marianne has built a career exposing inequality, while living inside it. As a sociologist and parent in Silicon Valley, she's seen firsthand how even the wealthy fear falling behind, and how families across the spectrum quietly hustle to secure their children's futures. In this episode, Marianne shares what it's like to understand exactly how privilege is reproduced while trying to avoid passing it on herself. Marianne Cooper, Ph.D., is a sociologist, speaker, writer, and expert advisor. She is a senior research scholar at Stanford University's VMware Women's Leadership Innovation Lab and an affiliate at the Stanford Center on Poverty & Inequality. Dr. Cooper is an expert on gender, women's leadership, inclusion, economic insecurity, and the future of work. Her book, Cut Adrift: Families in Insecure Times, examines how families are coping in an insecure age. Dr. Cooper was the lead researcher for Sheryl Sandberg's NYT best-seller Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead and she is an author on all of the Lean In & McKinsey Women in the Workplace reports. Dr. Cooper regularly speaks, writes, and consults on these topics for media outlets like The Atlantic, The New York Times, and Harvard Business Review and companies such as Adobe and Sony. She is an affiliated educator for the Center for Institutional Courage and a LinkedIn Top Voice for Gender Equity. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.

PlayStation is booming, at least depending on how you look at things. On the one hand, Sony's annual financial results are incredibly strong: PlayStation drove more revenue last year than any gaming entity ever has in the entire history of the industry. Meanwhile, PS5 will surpass 80 million units sold soon, and has become the default console for most players this generation. But there's a downside; indeed, Sony is doing all of this damage with one hand tied behind its back, as major exclusive releases have slowed down to a trickle, while the level of behind-the-scenes mismanagement becomes ever-starker. As we were wrapping our episode up, word dropped that first party studio Haven lost its founder and biggest name, Jade Raymond, apparently after a tumultuous testing of Fairgames, boding poorly for the future of that product and team. Maybe this entire initiative was a bad idea, after all? Plus: Death Stranding 2 goes gold, Stellar Blade is coming to PC, rumors percolate about a Grand Theft Auto IV remaster, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will Final Fantasy XVII be turn-based? What does the 11th hour saving of Giant Bomb mean for the future of games media? Could Game Pass' undeniable value proposition begin peeling away the Sony hardcore? Who should we cast Obesaga on, so that we can have an overweight cast member for representation's sake? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement.
