Driven by an underlying sense of altruism and a passion for the absurd Roger has made it his mission to bring the genius of silly ideas into the mainstream and goes on to explain the ethos behind the Bureau and its seriously silly work. We talk about how subverting the everyday creates the space for magic to happen, and Roger recounts some of the Bureau's exploits, that include rampant robot wheelie bins, harvesting the pheromones of success whilst masquerading as event sponsors, and working with the UN. We also look at how silliness and eccentricity are at risk in the wake of cancel culture and how we can push creative boundaries by blurring the lines of reality and illusion. Ahtoy has performed with Billy Fajardo, Santo Rico, The Hustle Collective, Team Fajardo, and The New York Movement.Ahtoy formed BAILA Society in 2006 with Daniel Enskat and Joseph Rivera. As Artistic Director, she has created over three dozen works that are showcased worldwide. She is currently dancing with Edwin Tolentino. Together they hold numerous world champion titles in Salsa and Latin Hustle. Ahtoy & Edwin are proud to represent Latin Hustle in the salsa industry, where they are showcasing and restoring the Latinx and Queer heritage of Latin Hustle. Ahtoy is a founding judge of the World Salsa Summit and adjudicates national and international competitions. Michael Shaw Fisher is an actor, producer and writer of musicals, films, and novels in Los Angeles. His original musical DOCTOR NYMPHO VS THE SEX ZOMBIES won Best Musical at the Hollywood Fringe in 2018. Lindy Hume, AM, is one of Australia's leading directors, acknowledged internationally for fresh interpretations of a wide variety of repertoire, and for progressive artistic leadership of a number of Australian arts organisations, including Opera Queensland (2012-2017), Sydney Festival (2010-2012) and Perth International Arts Festival (2004-2007). She was also the first Artistic Director of West Australian Opera (1992-96), Artistic Director of Victoria State Opera and then OzOpera (1996-2001). Lindy has most recently been Creative Director of the Four Winds Easter Festival, Bermagui and is currently Artistic Director of the 10 Days on the Island Festival, Tasmania 2019-2023. In 2021 Lindy Hume was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the performing arts, particularly to opera. Austin is a former longtime member of Pilobolus Dance Theater, and has been connected with the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond for almost 20 years as teacher and founder/artistic director of the University's School of Dance. As Artistic Director of Dalton-Hartel Dance and Hartel Dance Group, he toured nationally and internationally to critical acclaim.  His choreography has been presented on five continents and at prestigious festivals, including in Italy at The Vignale Dance Festival, The Florence Dance Festival, and the Versiliana Festival.   He was presented in Brazil at the 5th Festival de Danca de Mercosul and the VI International Seminar de Danca.  New York performances were produced at numerous popular dance venues, including The Kaye Playhouse, DTW, St. Mark's Church, Clark Studio Theater at Lincoln Center, and more. Austin's honors include the U.S. Department of State naming him as a Cultural Specialist touring throughout Central and South American for ten years, and a 2009 Fulbright Scholar's Grant. At 14 years old I choreographed my first “full evening" performance for 30 dancers - it was called "Dancing the Dream". Graduated by the National Conservatory of Portugal, where I gained my classical technique background, I danced in companies before deciding to found my own - I thought "Everyone else is doing it, so why can't I?". As Artistic Director of Amalgama Dance Company for 7 years, I started to introduce the somatic approach in my creative processes. Being a researcher of Movement and Contact Improvisation, I kept on directing projects, retreats and gatherings (including Arrábida Dance Labs) adding today more than twenty years of professional experience as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. Focused on the theme “Self Awareness for the Cohesion of the Collective Energy Field”, I believe that dance is a liberating tool for embodied interactions.  

Kim is cofounder and Artistic Director of The Improv Company and has taught and performed improvised theatre for ten years. He has studied improv in Chicago, London and Oxford under some of the most venerated instructors still alive, and as a former board member of the Applied Improvisation Network, he is engaged in keeping up with current trends of improv training, facilitation and performance. As Artistic Director of the Company, he ensures the quality of the Company's instruction and performances. As Artistic Director of the Brandenburg Orchestra, Paul Dyer leads a dedicated team of musicians and support staff who bring passion and excellence to every performance. In 2013 Paul was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his ‘distinguished service to the performing arts, particularly orchestral music as a director, conductor and musician, through the promotion of educational programs and support for emerging artists'. Under Paul's direction, the Brandenburg has become one of the most outstanding period instrument ensembles in the world. Paul Dyer founded the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra with Managing Director Bruce Applebaum in 1989. The Brandenburg's first official concert was at the Sydney Opera House, a moment Paul readily recalls with fondness and disbelief at his own naivete with such an ambitious project. It is however this ambition and passion that Paul has brought to the organisation every day, and which has led the orchestra from strength to strength. Paul's dedication and enthusiasm continue to inspire the musicians and support team, as the orchestra grows and innovates, challenges and inspires, both audience and performer alike. Camille A. Brown is a prolific Black female choreographer, who is reclaiming the cultural narratives of African American identity. Her bold work taps into both ancestral stories and contemporary culture to capture a range of deeply personal experiences. Ms. Brown is the first Black woman to serve as a director at the Metropolitan Opera, with their current production Fire Shut Up In My Bones. Shortly thereafter she's taking the reins of the Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls.She has received numerous honors including a Guggenheim Award, Bessie Award, Jacob's Pillow Dance Award, a Doris Duke Artist Award, a Dance Magazine award, a United States Artists Award, 2 Audelco Awards, 5 Princess Grace Awards, and a New York City Center Award. Tom Ridgely has led the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival since 2018. A Drama Desk-nominated director, he has developed or presented work at the Public Theater, The Old Globe, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare Society, Red Bull and more. He’s worked with Tony nominees Sting, Sherie Rene Scott, Laura Osnes, Will Swenson, Kelli O’Hara, Bill Irwin and others, and his productions have won DFW Theater Critics Forum and ECNY Awards and been nominated for CT Critics Circle and BroadwayWorld Connecticut Awards. He also co-founded Waterwell in New York and served as its Artistic Director from 2002-2018. There he created and produced more than a dozen world-premieres and adaptations of classics that were nominated for three IT awards, a Drama Desk, a New York Magazine Culture Award and a Village Voice “Best of NYC”. Known for building innovative community partnerships, he most recently resurrected the lost WWII-era Frank Loesser musicals, Blueprint Specials, featuring Broadway and military veterans and presented on board the former USS Intrepid aircraft carrier, as well as adapting and directing Waterwell’s dual-language (English/Farsi) version of Hamlet, designed and performed by a company of predominantly Middle Eastern and South Asian artists. Peter Kazaras has been a mainstay of Seattle Opera since his 1985 debut onstage singing the role of Steva in JENŮFA. His debut as a stage director came in 2003. As Artistic Director of Seattle Opera’s Young Artists Program from 2005 to 2013, plus his ongoing work as Director of Opera at UCLA, he has trained a generation of opera artists. Giving Life to PuppetryIn this second episode of our two-part interview with Richard Bradshaw, we discuss UNIMA Australia, a book about shadow puppets, Norman Hetherington of Mr Squiggle and how Richard makes his puppets so distinct and engaging for young audiences.-World renowned shadow puppet master Richard Bradshaw needs no introduction to the international puppetry community. His work has been seen by millions through a life time of stage performances all over the world and through television appearances including “The Muppet Show” and an hour-long documentary in the series “Jim Henson Presents The World of Puppetry”. Australian children grew up with performances of his shadow artistry on ABC TV's “Playschool”, where his shadow puppets were broadcast for over 30 years. From 1976 to 1983 Richard was Artistic Director of Australia's then largest puppetry company, the Marionette Theatre of Australia. Under his directorship the company secured a permanent theatre space in The Rocks in Sydney. As Artistic Director, Richard introduced modern puppetry techniques to Australian audiences and inspired many young puppeteers who were given the opportunity to work and learn from some of Australia's best puppeteers and puppet makers.Richard has performed with his shadow puppets for audiences of children and adults for over 50 years to over 25 countries. In 1986 Richard received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) “for services to the arts as a puppeteer” and in 1987 he shared the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award “for sustained excellence in the field of puppetry”. Richard been a member of the international puppetry organisation, UNIMA, since 1964 and helped to establish UNIMA Australia in 1970. Live theatre is one of the oldest art forms, but rather than fade away in the face of easy social media and instant entertainment, it is experiencing a resurgence. What is it about live drama that keeps filling theatres around the world? How are theatre directors keeping the form relevant, accessible and engaging? What are the cultural touchstones of the stage, and what makes it so much fun? Ben is in Edmonton to chat with Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director of the renowned Citadel Theatre. About the Guest Daryl began his tenure with the Citadel in September 2016. He came to Edmonton from his role as Artistic Director of Western Canada Theatre (WCT) in Kamloops, B.C. Past chairman of the Citadel Board of Directors, Sheila Witwicky, has said of Daryl that “he has the special combination of vision, skill, experience and artistry that running a theatre centre like ours requires.” Originally from Ontario, Daryl was at the artistic helm of WCT for six years and, in addition, is a nationally recognized director of productions across the country, including at the Arts Club, Theatre Calgary, National Arts Centre, Shaw Festival, Canadian Stage and Neptune Theatre. He was the Artistic Director of Theatrefront, Toronto, known for its unique international theatre collaborations in countries such as South Africa and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which played across Canada and internationally to much acclaim. He’s also the co-creator and director of DRUM! a musical celebration of the founding cultures of the Maritimes which features a large cast of dancers and musicians from Celtic, Acadian, African-Canadian, and First Nations origin. Daryl is thrilled to be spending the next chapter of his career in a theatre town like Edmonton. “My passion as a theatre-maker and Artistic Director is community. It will be my job as Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre to become a contributing part of Edmonton’s artistic community and to provide opportunities to local artists and train emerging artists from the region and across the country,” he says. “I believe the Citadel must maintain a high profile leadership role within Edmonton and continue to figure prominently as part of the national theatre scene. As Artistic Director, I will pursue partnerships and opportunities to showcase the Citadel’s work on national stages. I believe a theatre with the profile of the Citadel should be known nationally for its work, and while the Edmonton community will always be our primary audience, audiences across North America should see our fabulous productions.” Growing audiences is a particular focus of Daryl’s. He’s keenly interested in having young people experience the magic of theatre, as well as in the importance of multi-cultural voices on Edmonton’s stages. WCT is a national leader in the creation of First Nations theatre work and the support of First Nations artists. Children of God, a musical co-developed at WCT about the residential school experience in Canada, premiered at the National Arts Centre in June 2017, and will appear on the Shoctor stage at the Citadel March 3 to 24, 2018. Daryl also has a great interest in theatrical experimentation. At WCT, he created the annual High-Wire Festival, which challenged the relationship between artist and audience by exploring different theatre formats (micro-performance, immersive performance, interactive productions). Daryl intends to bring this desire for experimentation and attracting non-traditional audiences to the Citadel. “I value theatre that asks questions important to its community; I value creative risks,” he says. “The Citadel is an incredible theatre company with a history of innovation, high production values and important contributions to the Canadian theatre landscape. I want to build on this success, honour its traditions and also take appropriate risks to lead the Citadel into the next phase of its artistic growth. Marvin Tontiwachwuthikul Chan, better known by his stage alter-ego Merv xx Gotti, is the singer of of WCMA-nominated Canadian hip-hop/R&B duo, Samurai Champs, as well as Artistic Director of Canadian collective-label, Trifecta Sound Co. With Samurai Champs, Merv xx Gotti has toured internationally to the US, UK, and Europe, performing in festivals such as South by Southwest (SXSW) (Austin, TX), North by Northeast (NXNE) (Toronto, ON), The Great Escape (Brighton, UK), Reeperbahn (Hamburg, GE), Tallinn Music Week (Estonia), and more. As Artistic Director of Trifecta Sound Co., Marvin has curated and organized SK-based cultural events such as Trifecta Music Festival, Trifecta Block Party, and Trifecta Concert Series. As Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on London’s South Bank, Dominic Dromgoole oversaw 10 successive and extremely successful seasons at the Bard’s theatre. And now, Dominic Dromgoole is turning his hand to film directing, with his feature film debut “Making Noise Quietly” - screenplay by Robert Holman. I sat down to talk to Dominic about the transition from theatre to film, working with some of his favourite actors and what he sees himself doing next.

As well as being a celebrated performer, he is recognized as an accomplished composer and curator, and was named a TED Senior Fellow in 2015. Recent seasons have seen Roman perform recitals and concert with orchestras around the US and the world, including performances of Mason Bates's Cello Concerto (which was written for him) and his very own concerto.  Roman is also a very active chamber musician and shares the stage with today's finest musicians. Roman has demonstrated inspirational artistic leadership throughout his career. As Artistic Director of TownMusic in Seattle he has showcased his own eclectic musical influences and chamber music favorites, while also promoting newly commissioned works. Under his direction, the series has offered world premieres of compositions by some of today's brightest young composers and performances by cutting-edge ensembles. In the 2015-16 season at TownMusic he presented his own song cycle, … we do it to one another, based on Tracy K. Smith's book of poems Life on Mars, with soprano Jessica Rivera. He has also recently been appointed the inaugural Artistic Advisor of award-winning contemporary streaming channel Second Inversion, launched by Seattle's KING-FM to cultivate the next generation of classical audiences. The cellist additionally took on a new curatorial role last summer, as Creative Partner of the Colorado Music Festival & Center for Musical Arts. The same organization sponsored him in April 2016 at the 68th Annual Conference on World Affairs on the University of Colorado campus, where he contributed his innovative ideas about how classical music is conceived and presented.  Roman performed at the Kennedy Center Arts Summit that same month and is a member of the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors artists committee. Roman's cultural leadership includes using digital platforms to harness new audiences. In 2009 he developed “The Popper Project,” performing, recording and uploading the complete etudes from David Popper's High School of Cello Playing to his dedicated YouTube channel. In his latest YouTube project, “Everyday Bach,” Roman performs Bach's cello suites in beautiful settings around the world. He has collaborated with photographer Chase Jarvis on Nikon video projects, and Paste magazine singled out Roman and DJ Spooky for their cello and iPad cover of Radiohead's “Everything in Its Right Place,” created for the Voice Project. For his creative initiatives on behalf of classical music, Roman was named a TED Fellow in 2011, joining a select group of next-generation innovators who show potential to positively affect the world. He acted as curator for an outdoor amphitheater performance at the TED Summit in Banff in the Canadian Rockies this past summer. Beyond these initiatives, Roman's adventurous spirit has led to collaborations with artists outside the music community, including his co-creation of “On Grace” with Tony Award-nominated actress Anna Deavere Smith, a work for actor and cello which premiered in February 2012 at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral. His outreach endeavors have taken him to Uganda with his violin-playing siblings, where they played chamber music in schools, HIV/AIDS centers and displacement camps, communicating a message of hope through music. Before embarking on a solo career, Roman spent two seasons as principal cellist of the Seattle Symphony, a position he won in 2006 at the age of 22. Since that time, he has appeared as a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra, New World Symphony, Alabama Symphony, and Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional del Ecuador, among many others. An active chamber musician, Roman has collaborated with established artists such as Andrius Zlabys, Cho-Liang Lin, Assad Brothers, Earl Carlyss, Christian Zacharias and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as other dynamic young soloists and performers from New York's vibrant music scene, including the JACK Quartet, Talea Ensemble, Derek Bermel and the Enso String Quartet. A native of Oklahoma City, Roman began playing the cello at the age of three on a quarter-size instrument, and gave his first public recital at age ten. Home-schooled until he was 16, he then pursued his musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Richard Aaron. Ruth Lawrence’s work as an artist has taken her to Ireland, France, the US, and across Canada. As Artistic Director of White Rooster Theatre, a company in its 16thyear, she produces the work of women writers, garnering accolades and presentations across Canada.She is co-founder and coordinator of the Women’s Work Festival, now celebrating 10 years of developing new plays by women, the festival has a proven record as a successful springboard to production for women playwrights.As a filmmaker, her short films have screened, won awards and nominations across Canada and the US.Ruth won the Joan Orenstein Best Actress Award for Clipper Gold at the 2011 Atlantic Film Festival and the RBC Michelle Jackson Award for Emerging Filmmaker in 2011 for Two Square Feet starring Jeanne Beker. She was named the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council’s Artist of the Year for 2011 and in was honoured with the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2013. Since 2014, she has produced three award-winning short films for Blue Pinion Films and co-produced her first feature Hunting Pignut (Pope Productions), all with women as writer/directors. As Artistic Director for Belinda King Productions, Lisa Cottrell is responsible for the whole process of creating and presenting shows from beginning to end. In this great interview she shares her expertise.

David Lan is a huge force in theatre in Britain, indeed internationally. But how he got there is surprising. Brought up in Cape Town, he began his career as an anthropologist, living for two years in a remote area of Zimbabwe in order to study spirit magic. He went on to become a playwright and documentary director, and he's written the libretto for two operas. One critic recently described Lan as a 'Diaghilev-like figure' because of his flair for bringing artists together. As Artistic Director of the Young Vic, he led the £12.5m theatre rebuild - and has over the last 14 years established a reputation both for spotting new talent, and for persuading directors from all over the world to come to London to direct wildly inventive productions. His latest role, announced this year, is Consulting Artistic Director for the New York Arts Centre, which is still being built, on the site of the 9/11 attacks. In Private Passions, David Lan talks about his upbringing in South Africa, and how he learnt to love music as a young boy in his grandmother's shop, which sold bicycles - and piles of old 78s. He describes his time as an anthropologist in Zimbabwe, living in a remote and dangerous part of the country just after the war of independence. And he pays tribute to the relationship at the heart of his life, with distinguished playwright Nicholas Wright, whom Lan met when he was only 17. As Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment, Alex Mustakas manages a multimillion dollar theatre empire, the third-largest professional summer theatre company in Canada, just after Stratford and Shaw. Alex talks about some of the folks who inspired him during his high school days, at Kitchener's Eastwood Collegiate institute, including John Kerr and George Joyce. Alex's father encouraged Alex to study business, but theatre was in Alex's blood. His uncle Sotiris Moustakas, was one of the most celebrated Cypriot / Greek actors, breaking into the acting scene in the 1964 Oscar winning film “Zorba the Greek.” Alex talks about squaring his love of theatre with his father's wishes, Drayton's philosophical approach to growing the business and the value of community theatre.
