Wait a minute. Yes, our dear (Bryan) is in Edinburgh right now, but we're just getting right into it this week because we have a special guest who's been in The Carriage House so much it might be insulting to call her a guest. She's family at this point, pardon me. It's our dear, dear friend Jessica St. Clair! If you're not listening to Jessica's podcast THE DEEP DIVE (with the equally lovely June Diane Raphael), we don't know what to tell you. You're missing out! Ronna and Jessica, who's off to the south of France tomorrow for a well earned vacation, have a little Carriage House Catch-Up of their own (did Ronna REALLY give Jessica some bad pot?) before giving advice on a mother vs mother-in-law battle and what to do with a boyfriend whose home is less than clean. It's time to get hinky. If you're anywhere near Scotland, you've GOT to go see (Bryan)'s show ARE YOU MAD AT ME at the Edinburgh Fringe! Now showing through the end of August! Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich was one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. But in 1936, Joseph Stalin attended a performance of Shostakovich's opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. The Soviet leader was unimpressed and left early. Days later, the state newspaper Pravda published a scathing review titled 'Muddle instead of music', castigating the music as bourgeois. Shostakovich was blacklisted from public life, and feared for his safety during Stalin's ongoing purges. The traditional style of his comeback Symphony No 5 in 1937 was a hit with the authorities, and Shostakovich's reputation was restored. But his true intentions are hugely debated – some experts argue the Fifth Symphony was a cleverly veiled act of dissent. Fifty years on from the composer's death, his son Maxim Shostakovich unfolds the mystery with Ben Henderson.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the civil rights swimming protest; the disastrous D-Day rehearsal; and the death of one of the world's oldest languages.(Photo: Dmitri Shostakovich and his son Maxim Shostakovich. It's the big day for Starmer's one-in, one-out migrant deal with France. The scheme, which was agreed during the state visit last month, comes into effect today – but Yvette Cooper and other figures in Whitehall remain suspiciously evasive when it comes to putting a number on returns to France. Immigration is, of course, the problem of highest salience across the country, and made even more pressing by recent riots at migrant hotels, giving far-right opposition parties plenty of ammunition. Polling shows that 40 per cent of Reform supporters would consider voting for Labour next time if the number of small boat arrivals fell. So, will it work? Will it prove a better deterrent than, say, the Rwanda deal? This is undoubtedly a landmark agreement with France, and puts us in closer alliance with the French. Are there areas where we should be taking lessons from them – perhaps when it comes to our dealings with overseas terrorists, for example?Oscar Edmondson speaks to Tim Shipman and Madeline Grant.Produced by Oscar Edmondson.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Whether she's evoking the salty tang of the Lofoten Islands, the rustic flavours of rural Normandy, or the buzz of a New York kitchen, her words are rich with atmosphere and emotion - it is of course, Diana Henry, one of Britain's most celebrated food writers. She's a James Beard Award winner, long-time Sunday Telegraph columnist, and author of bestselling books like Crazy Water, Pickled Lemons, How to Eat a Peach, and Around the Table, a new audio collection of essays spanning decades of food, travel and life.As you'll hear, Diana's wanderlust was born not from glamorous holidays, but from imagination. Growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, she escaped into books and encyclopaedias, dreaming of faraway places long before she ever had the chance to visit them.In this episode, we trace her journeys from Dublin to the Dordogne, Spain to Maine. We talk about foraging for mushrooms in France and eating cod's heads in Iceland, She shares why she reads restaurant menus for fun, and the deep emotional connection she feels to the places she's travelled, through taste.I spoke to Diana last month, and although we hadn't met before, I instantly warmed to her. I loved the way she speaks about travel, through a different lens, shaped by flavour and feeling. We continue our series of Adcom Q&As, and this week we have two Q&As, from Harvard Business School's Rupal Gadhia and Maryland / Smith's Maria Pineda. Finally, Graham highlighted a recently published podcast that focuses on the strategy consulting industry and its importance for MBA candidates. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a superb 795 on the GMAT, but a very modest GPA. We discussed the impact of this GPA on their overall profile. This week's second MBA candidate is from India and has not yet taken the GRE. They are targeting top MBA programs outside the United States. The final MBA candidate has a 745 GMAT and 3.95 GPA in chemical engineering. They work at a small firm, with no title change. We do think this is a very strong candidate. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. We proved that victory over Israel is not impossible, and our weapons are a symbol of Palestinian dignity." On today's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten chastises those countries for lacking moral clarity and embolding Hamas through their declarations. Also, a step in the right direction as 4,000 Israelis visit the Temple Mount on Tisha Be'av. Josh says it's significant for Jews to understand that the fight against evil - Hamas and their friends, isn't a battle of territory, but a clash of civilizations with Jerusalem at its center. Hamas understands this, and now more and more Jews are waking up to this reality.

Saint John Vianney is known for many miracles, strengthening his reputation as a holy man. These include healing the sick and infirm, providing miraculous provisions for his orphanage despite facing financial difficulties and being able to read souls during confession. Many people attribute their spiritual conversions and changed lives to his intercession and prayers. These miracles continue to inspire faith in Saint John Vianney’s sanctity and powerful connection with God. So, he is truly an inspiration for all who seek guidance in our spiritual journey. What did St. John Vianney eat? Saint John Vianney was known for his severe fasting and self-discipline as part of his spiritual journey. He believed in following the example of Jesus, who fasted for 40 days in the desert and saw it as a way to purify his soul and draw closer to God. As a result, Saint John Vianney’s diet mainly consisted of boiled potatoes and bread, with occasional vegetables or eggs. This simple and humble diet allowed him to focus on God rather than material comforts, and he often offered up his physical hunger as a sacrifice for others. Despite financial difficulties in running La Providence orphanage, Saint John Vianney never compromised on his strict fasting routine. His dedication to this spiritual practice is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-discipline and sacrifice in our pursuit of holiness and closeness with God. What is another name for St. John Vianney? Saint John Vianney is also known as the Curé d’Ars, which translates to “Priest of Ars” in English. This title refers to his pastoral role as the parish priest of the small French village of Ars, where he served for over 40 years. As the only priest in a village filled with religious skeptics and lukewarm Catholics, Saint John Vianney faced immense challenges in his ministry. But through his dedication and selfless service, he transformed the village into a center of spiritual revival and devotion. He spent countless hours hearing confessions, offering guidance and counsel to those seeking help, and providing spiritual direction to the community. His love for God and the people of Ars earned him the title of “Curé d’Ars,” a name that continues to be associated with his legacy as a holy and devoted priest. So, Saint John Vianney is truly an inspiration for all who seek to serve God’s people with love, humility, and determination. What is the prayer of St. John Vianney? One of the most well-known prayers attributed to Saint John Vianney is the “Act of Love,” a simple yet powerful prayer that reflects his deep spiritual devotion and humility. In this prayer, he acknowledges his love for God and desires to serve Him. He recognizes his unworthiness and asks for forgiveness and strength to do God’s will. This act of surrender and trust in God’s mercy showcases Saint John Vianney’s humility and complete reliance on God. How old was St. John Vianney when he died? Saint John Vianney passed away at the age of 73 after spending over 40 years as the parish priest of Ars. Despite facing physical ailments and exhaustion from his intense ministry, he continued to serve his parishioners with unwavering dedication and love. Even in his final days, Saint John Vianney was found hearing confessions and offering guidance to those seeking spiritual help. His tireless efforts in the confessional and selfless service to others until the end reflect his deep commitment to his calling as a priest. What is special about St. John Vianney? Saint John Vianney’s life was filled with unique qualities that inspire and guide people toward a deeper relationship with God. One of the most notable characteristics of his life was his profound humility, which shone through in his actions and interactions with others. Despite being known as a holy man and spiritual guide, Saint John Vianney never considered himself worthy or deserving of such titles. He saw himself as merely an instrument in God’s hands and humbly accepted all praise and honor directed towards him as a reflection of God’s goodness. What is St. John Mary Vianney the patron saint of? Saint John Mary Vianney is the patron saint of parish priests, a title given to him in recognition of his exemplary dedication to his pastoral duties and the transformative impact he had on his community in Ars, France. He was also the patron saint of Diocesan Priests, Confessors, and Faithful Parish Priests. His canonization in 1925 was a testament to his holiness and devotion to God. His feast day is August 4, the day of his passing into eternal life. Could St. John Vianney read souls? One of the most well-known aspects of Saint John Vianney’s spiritual gifts was his ability to read souls. Many people who came to confession with him reported feeling as though he could see into their hearts and understand their deepest thoughts and struggles. This gift allowed him to provide personalized and profound guidance for each individual, addressing their specific needs and offering comfort and encouragement. It also helped him understand the human condition more deeply, allowing him to offer insights and advice that resonated deeply with those seeking his help. Want to learn more about this great saint? They also visited the Château d'Ygrande in the Auvergne, a gorgeous countryside retreat with an elegant restaurant—perfect for relaxing in a beautiful natural setting. But their journey didn't stop there. After their rural adventures, they returned to Paris for a very different kind of experience: a classical concert at Sainte-Chapelle and a stroll through the Marais. Full Text of ReadingsEighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 114The Saint of the day is Saint Peter Julian EymardSaint Peter Julian Eymard’s Story Born in La Mure d'Isère in southeastern France, Peter Julian's faith journey drew him from being a priest in the Diocese of Grenoble in 1834, to joining the Marists in 1839, to founding the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1856. In addition to those changes, Peter Julian coped with poverty, his father's initial opposition to Peter's vocation, serious illness, a Jansenistic overemphasis on sin, and the difficulties of getting diocesan and later papal approval for his new religious community. His years as a Marist, including service as a provincial leader, saw the deepening of his Eucharistic devotion, especially through his preaching of Forty Hours in many parishes. Inspired at first by the idea of reparation for indifference to the Eucharist, Peter Julian was eventually attracted to a more positive spirituality of Christ-centered love. Members of the men's community which Peter founded alternated between an active apostolic life and contemplating Jesus in the Eucharist. He and Marguerite Guillot founded the women’s Congregation of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament. Peter Julian Eymard was beatified in 1925 and canonized in 1962, one day after Vatican II's first session ended. Reflection In every century, sin has been painfully real in the life of the Church. It is easy to give in to despair, to speak so strongly of human failings that people may forget the immense and self-sacrificing love of Jesus, as his death on the cross and his gift of the Eucharist make evident. Peter Julian knew that the Eucharist was key to helping Catholics live out their baptism and preach by word and example the Good News of Jesus Christ. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
