How marketing co-opted authenticity, with Lauren Esmay

I'm calling an amnesty today.  An amnesty on using the word authentic in your copy.  And I realize, having sat down and talked to today's guest, that I'm pretty much going to have to go back and rewrite large chunks of my own copying content.  But I hope that after today's chat, you'll understand why.  Today's guest and I think that the word authentic or authenticity has had its day. I'm talking today to Lauren Esmay.  Lauren is a copywriter who specializes in helping clients create a holistic framework to serve their clients and consumers better.  She's a PhD candidate in health psychology, and she's completed extensive research in self connection. And today, she's talking to me about how Webster's 2023 Word of the Year - Authenticity - is her personal soapbox.  Lauren and I talk about how experiencing the collective crisis of the pandemic has encouraged us all to be the truest versions of ourselves and how this has contributed to the rise of the personal brand.  We talk about how using the word authentic to describe yourself can end up being more divisive because you place your values and beliefs and opinions above everybody else, essentially saying that they're not authentic. We talk about how to do authenticity well,  how to build an online presence that is authentic in the true meaning of the word, and how to show that you're running an authentic business without liberally sprinkling the word all over your copy and content. So as someone who is about to go away and rewrite their website,  and find more creative ways of demonstrating that I run a business that is a true representation of myself and my values. I want to encourage you to think about how often you reach for this easy shorthand of words like authenticity or authentic and how we might be contributing to the co opting of a really important concept by those who are just trying to sell more stuff.Lauren's got a lot of interesting things to say and her background in health psychology makes this a really valuable conversation. So sit back, grab a cup of tea and listen to Lauren get on her soapbox. Find Lauren's website hereConnect with Lauren on LinkedIn here Looking for more? Was, wenn's schief geht? Was bräuchtest Du genau jetzt? How To Find Great Business Ideas?Today we cover the story of a little-known Thai entrepreneur, his name is Itthipat Peeradechapan, nicknamed Tob because I can't repeat that name over and over again. His story highlights how you can start a business starting from nothing. His story shows, that you can make money selling something as simple as seaweed to become a multi-millionaire!Tob had an estimated worth of $600 million according to Forbes in 2018, at that time, he was the 50th richest person in Thailand. In 2004, Itthipat founded Tao Kae Noi (Little Tycoon) Food and Marketing Co., Ltd. The brand sold fried seaweed snacks, which became highly popular among teenagers and office workers. In December 2015, the company had its initial public offer (IPO) on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, raising 1.8 billion baht. How You Can Start A BusinessThere are five questions that I learned from Dane Maxwell, pulled from his podcast and book ‘Start from Zero” These five questions can start any business you might want. They are as follows and meant to be asked of someone else:Over the last month, year, or a decade, what has been your most persistent and prevalent problem? How do you currently go about solving this problem? What happens if you don't solve the problem? What would your dream solution be? Or if you could wave a magic wand, how would you or what would you do to solve the problem?Would you be willing to pay for the solution? If so, how much?Use these questions as a springboard, to build a business that others have already stated they would pay for, what are people willing to do in order to build a fantastic business?

What does an aspiring entrepreneur in a town of 2,000 learn? The importance of new customers! Jared Gobler’s high school had 200 students. It also had a class in entrepreneurship. He used what he learned there as part-owner of a paintball company, handling administration and accounts and getting comfortable with the business side of entrepreneurship. When he started his own moving company, he says his focus was always “finding my next customer. That was my number 1 goal. All of that work was useless if I wasn’t finding a new customer to serve every time.” It worked then, and still does. Today, Jared is CEO of FG Marketing, a full-service digital marketing shop whose clients include high-dollar investment services, a luxury yacht builder, and a firm that researches exotic energy and aerospace solutions. They all have two things in common: They all want to find new customers, and they all trust Jared to help them do it.
