“And my brother saw an opportunity with the Pioneertown Motel, which was just behind Pappy and Harriet's. It was not in the best shape, but it was next to this amazing event venue, and situated in this incredibly rich historical context that hadn't been fully exposed or told or explored, at least in the past from our perspective.” We're in great company with Mike French, Co-Founder and Partner at Life & Times - a creative design and development company passionate about detail-rich, contextually responsive, culturally driven and responsible placemaking - as realized through their restoration projects in Pioneertown Motel in California and Captain Whidbey in Washington, with a few other community projects on their culture map. Pioneertown Motel, originally made famous as a backdrop for the world's best Westerns, today offers a step back in time lodging experience at the nexus of deep nature and quality entertainment. Captain Whidbey is the gateway to beautiful and rugged wilderness, fostering a sense of romance, a longing for adventure and a communion with the natural world. In this episode, Mike shares how his creative career and open mindset led him to join together with family and friends to create Life & Times, preserving history, ingrained in community, and driven by culture. Top Takeaways [3:00] It was a family affair from the beginning for Mike and his brother Matt - and with a little persistence provided by their mom, they found themselves in a new world of hospitality. [6:30] How the narrative changed and created what would become Life & Times - certainly not a traditional company by the books, but one that is ingrained in every aspect of the community. [8:25] The history of Pioneertown - built in 1946 by the likes of Hollywood actors, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, as a working movie set to film all of the iconic Western films - transpired into a community of creatives living and working in the film industry. [12:00] The common thread woven throughout Life & Times is an “exercise in looking into the past, finding these special moments in history, trying to evoke the best of those moments and those feelings and those eras for each venue.” [14:20] Life & Times and other locals alike are breathing new life into the High Desert with cherished culinary classics, a reimagined release of the original Pioneertown Gazette, and the historic Post Office acting as a curated shop of local makers, artisans and brands. [24:10] Why Captain Whidbey on Whidbey Island, just outside of Seattle, Washington, is “the gateway to beautiful and rugged wild, fostering a sense of romance, a longing for adventure and a communion with the natural world.” [25:35] Expect to Dine In Good Company with freshly caught mussels right from within view of The Restaurant while you sip on local Washington wine. [27:50] How a Japanese Onsen experience, seeing the reverence for bathing culture there, inspired Mike to bring more holistic wellness experiences to the future of Captain Whidbey, beginning with the conception of a spa. As August draws to a close, I'm not sure how I feel. While I'm excited to start a new season of HOS in September, it also means a great time is coming to an end. After traveling to Spain and France, I returned to LA and started working on Yard Of Blondes' new record. Getting up early and spending the day listening to music, writing and demoing new songs has become a habit for me. And I have to say I'm pretty happy about it. I actually started working on that record last year, but scrapped everything I had because I didn't think it was good enough. There is a saying that a second album is always harder to write than the first, and it's true. There is a delicate balance between not repeating yourself and not alienating the people who support you. In the end, though, I think this shouldn't be on your mind since you can't write songs with other people in mind. The only way to carry something relevant is to be honest. I think I tried too much on the first songs I wrote last year. Putting pressure on myself wasn't helpful. The time I spent in Europe helped me relieve that pressure and when I returned home I was finally ready. Damn, I'm excited! The project isn't finished yet, so we'll see where it goes. At the moment, I'm taking a short break to record voices for an upcoming French band that my friend David Gitlis, the boss of Nowhere Records, has just signed. That's exciting too. You might not know it but we started our podcast as a hub for Nowhere records. I'll talk more about this soon, as things are beginning to take shape. Anyway, here we are at the end of my Hanging On Sunset Summer special recorded at the Pioneertown Film Festival. It's a very short interview but It's a very interesting band we got here. The Sons Of The Pioneers are the oldest band in the entire fucking world! It dates back to 1933. Can you believe that? Let me give you a little context and history here… Because the story of this band is tied to Pioneertown itself. 1946 saw the creation of Pioneertown by two of the biggest names in Western films, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Over 50 films were shot here in the 1950s at their film studio near Yucca Valley. Roy Rogers wasn't just an actor. He was a singer and he was the one who originally formed the Sons Of The Pioneers. Despite the fact that none of the founding members are alive today, the band has never stopped playing. Whenever a member retires, he is replaced by a new member. The same timeless arrangements are used for the same Western great songs to this day. In the town named after them, the Sons Of The Pioneers closed the festival. That was really moving. Many people in the audience burst into tears (including my friend Victoria Smith, the amazing rock photographer). It was truly magical. Their closing performance at a festival celebrating Western culture could not have been more appropriate. Hopefully they will return next year for Edition number 2. That's all for now! One of my favorite insights from Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch in episode #75: “Maybe 1994 or 1995, a switch came on, and I started writing better songs. There's no doubt about that. I remember writing a song called ‘Dog on Wheels' at the start of 1995, and then quickly after that, I wrote a song called ‘The State I Am In,' a song called ‘Lord Anthony,' ‘Sleep The Clock Around,' and it suddenly started flowing. There was a moment when I been in my favorite cafe, which I practically lived in — the Grosvenor Cafe — and I started getting the idea for ‘The State I Am In.' I had a little tune and I took it outside because it was too noisy in the cafe, and the words started to flow. It started coming easily, riding on top of the tune. And I didn't have to ponder the words. And actually I kind of didn't know where the ideas were coming from, I didn't know what I was saying — it all tumbled out.” Belle & Sebastian's awesome new album, A Bit Of Previous, is out now. The California band Cracker would have its greatest success with its second studio album, Kerosene Hat. Cracker is David Lowery on lead vocals and guitar, Johnny Hickman on lead guitar and vocals, Davey Faragher on bass and vocals, and Michael Urbano on drums. The name of the album comes from a time when Lowery and Hickman lived together in an old run-down house whose only heat source was a pair of kerosene heaters. They had to walk to a nearby gas station to buy more kerosene and would bundle up with a wool cap that came to be known as the kerosene hat. While the group considered themselves more drawn to roots rock or country, the album went platinum during the days of grunge as an alternative rock sound. It definitely does not follow the over produced "hair band" sound that was beginning to wane in the early 90's. Much of the album was recorded in an abandoned sound stage in Pioneertown, California, in a location so run down that the group had to round up old mattresses from junk yards to provide insulation on colder days. The band holds a music festival there each year. Wayne leads this expedition into the early 90's rock scene. LowThis single only reached number 64 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but it was number 3 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. Lowery claimed that the song was not about drugs, and that the lyric is not "like being stoned," but "like being stone." Other lyrics like "a million poppies gonna make me sleep" make this claim seem a bit more dubious.Get Off ThisThe second single from the album is a response to former fans who accused Cracker of selling out to make more mainstream music. The response is obvious from the chorus: "So let's get off this, and get on with it. If you wanna change the world, shut your mouth and start to spin it."Lets Go for a Ride This deeper track is well described by the title - it is a driving song. "So, drive real fast through the underpass, and if we die or if we crash, well, I'd be flattered to be buried right next to you." Euro-Trash Girl This is a bit of a "hidden track" on the CD (coming in at #69), and is a favorite of serious Cracker fans. It was originally released on the EP "Tucson" It tells the story of a lonely guy in Europe who suffers through a series of break-ups. The band wrote this as a group, partly based on things the members had experienced, and some made up situations. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I Can See Clearly Now by Jimmy Cliff (from the motion picture “Cool Runnings”)The appearance of the Jamaican national team in the bobsled event for the 1988 Winter Olympics inspired this movie staring John Candy. STAFF PICKS:Sober by TOOLRob brings us a grunge song from the Los Angeles band Tool. The song is off their debut album, but it was most known for its creepy stop-action video. Similarities to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" have prompted a number of mash-ups. The lyrics were inspired by a friend of the band whose creativity only came out when he was under the influence.Hey Jealousy by Gin BlossomsThe song Brian features was written by guitarist Doug Hopkins about his former girlfriend. Hopkins was fired for unreliability associated with his heavy drinking, but the song propelled the Gin Blossoms to success. Hopkins became depressed and committed suicide in December 1993. Perfectly Good Guitar by John HiattBruce's staff pick is a minor key blues number from a singer-songwriter who has worked with a tremendous amount of artists. This song from his eleventh studio album laments the way that rock stars get attention by smashing up perfectly good guitars.Bad Thing by Cry of LoveWayne's staff pick is a deeper cut. Cry of Love is out of Raleigh, North Carolina, and has a sound reminiscent of Bad Company. It was a throwback to solid 70's rock during a time when that genre of music was out of favor. Band members would go on to perform with other groups including the Black Crowes and Lynyrd Skynyrd. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Leave That Thing Alone by RushThis instrumental from the Counterpoints album is a bit of a continuation of the "Where's My Thing" instrumental from Rush's previous album.
The Gritcast headed out to Pioneertown, California to meet up with our friend, David Corso! Ethan connected with David in 2020 while planning our John Wayne Grit Series Pioneertown run that benefits the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. On this episode, Ethan and David are also joined by our Race Director, Molly Kassouf, and the two sit down with David to get his interesting life story David owns a marketing group that integrates activations for brands and in 1999 got connected with Coachella founder and was asked to help bring brands in to sponsor the event and create activations for the guests. Talk about John Wayne Grit, David went from handing out paper tickets to help drive attendance to the festival and now the festival ticket demands are so high, it is a two weekend event and tickets sell out quickly. David and Ethan also bond over their love of Pioneertown, a town that was once used as a set for westerns and is located outside of Palm Springs in the high desert. David talks about what drew him to Pioneertown and after purchasing it, his plans to keep the Pioneertown charm. Cancer is such a big story in John Wayne's legacy and David was also affected by the disease when his brother was diagnosed. His brother's one wish was to be able to spend his final days with their mom so after failed attempts to get an ambulance across state lines, David loaded his brother up and the two road tripped back to New Orleans so his brother could be closer to their mother. David has been such a good friend to the John Wayne family and has really helped the fight against cancer with his contributions to the John Wayne Grit Series. This is a really fun interview with Ethan, Molly, and David, we hope you enjoy! Born in in Kingston Ontario Canada, near Syracuse NY, Robyn Lewis made her way to California with her first husband – he was moving back to family and Robyn was excited to be near LA to continue her acting career. Robyn describes herself as a shy kid who took some acting classes in Canada to try it out, which lead to doing extra work on films when she moved to Los Angeles. On set, she enjoyed the camaraderie of the other actors and talks about some of the pitfalls of being a newbie in Hollywood. While living in the Los Angeles area, Robyn had a friend with a place in Pioneertown. Robyn, and her then husband, would come up to visit for a change of scenery, wandering around Mane Street, which at the time was mostly residential. They'd wander into Pappy & Harriett's - with no reservations - and were wowed by a young lady who would stand near the jukebox and ‘rocked the place' with her amazing voice. Robyn and her then husband decided to purchase a place in Johnson Valley and moved to the desert. Robyn quickly realized this location was too remote for a young mother with two young children. To meet people and give the kids some social time, Robyn found the parks in Yucca Valley, picnicking with the kids several times a week, meeting other moms and kids. She also discovered a Mommy and Me group where she found herself teaching several classes. Eventually, Robyn rented out the Johnson Valley house and moved to Yucca Valley. Robyn says at that time the Morongo Basin was a pretty quiet place. There was no Starbucks, no Applebee's. Just a Kmart and two grocery stores. Robyn confesses to not spending much time in the National Park until meeting her current partner. If you've been to Crossroads Café in Joshua Tree, Robyn may have taken your order. She recently made the difficult decision to leave the Cafe after working there for over ten years. In this episode, Robyn says the crew she worked with was truly like a family and she met so many wonderful people, visitors and locals alike. In all her years here in the Morongo Basin, she feels this is the largest and longest influx of people that she remembers moving to the desert. She's asks new residents and visitors respect the place, the silence and clean up after yourself.

Born and raised in San Diego, Shaney Jo Darden's first experience with the desert was traveling to visit her grandparents who lived in Palm Desert. About ten years ago, Shaney Jo started coming to the hi-desert to visit a friend, who owned Rimrock Ranch in Pioneertown. Rimrock became a place for Shaney Jo to bring her staff for annual employee retreats: learning about new programs, receiving training and enjoying some off-site downtime hiking, taking in a sound bath at the Integratron or having a social night out together at Pappy & Harriet’s. After a number of trips to the hi-desert, spending more and more time here and meeting the community, Shaney Jo began to realize this was a special place for her. Having spent nearly 10 years in Los Angeles, Shaney Jo was ready for a change and recognized moving to the desert would not only change her surroundings, but would also be the place to fulfill one of her big dreams: to build a wellness center for cancer survivors. Shaney Jo is the Founder and Global CCO of Keep A Breast . The organization empowers young people around the world with breast health education and support and sparks conversation around prevention, early detection and self-checks for young women. This includes art and education programs as well as programs for survivors. In this episode, Shaney Jo takes us through the formation of the organization, from it's humble beginnings as a fund-raising art show, to the international organization it is today, celebrating 20 years of good works (2020). Last year, Keep A Breast was part of the annual local Highway 62 Art Tours, breast casting nearly a dozen local women whose casts were painted by local hi-desert artists and available for viewing during the third weekend of the tours. With their new headquarters completed and staffed in Yucca Valley, Shaney Jo is looking to offer the KAB lounge space for a cancer survivors group to form and is now turning her attention to the development of the wellness center of her dreams. Actively in the planning stages on property in the Rimrock area, this achievement will bring Shaney Jo’s desert journey full circle. As Keep A Breast began to rapidly grow and change, Shaney Jo found herself looking for help to responsibly guide the organization. She found it in the form of a book titled, ‘Let My People go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman‘ by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and one of the founders of 1% for the Planet. Shaney Jo recommends this book to anyone running a business or non-profit who is looking for a better way to lead their organization and take care of its staff. Prior to founding Keep A Breast, Shaney Jo worked in the apparel industry - another lifelong dream realized - with designers like Tommy Hilfiger in NYC, before returning to the west coast to work in the surf/skate apparel industries – Shaney Jo’s fabric of choice is denim. Artist and founder of Earth House Studios, Sharon Davis creates colorful art and installations at her home in Morongo Valley. Sharon and I bonded as two Jersey girls, so you might get hungry listening to the beginning of this episode. Sharon left NJ for the first time in in 1974 and came to California, landing in Huntington Beach, moving on to Moreno Valley, then Palm Springs. After that she's moved between the east coast and Texas, Virginia and Maryland, with a few stops back to California in between. Her first desert experience was in Palm Springs, which Sharon found to be way too hot. When she did decide to come back west, having some pretty specifics requirements for her property, she thought she'd land in Pioneertown, but found the perfect place in Morongo Valley - a place she feels doesn't get enough credit and notice in the basin. Sharon has always liked art and being creative, dabbling in many different types of art from drawing to sewing. As a kid, a woman came to her parents house to buy a couch, saw some of Sharon's art and invited her to come apprentice with her husband, who worked for Tiffany's. Sharon spent one Saturday with the man and another young artist, learning how to inlay enamel with toothpicks. After have her kids, Sharon set aside her creativity and art, only using it to work on projects she typically gave away as Christmas gifts. She finds herself very inspired by the desert and the night sky and tells a story about her high school art teacher, with whom she re-connected with many years later. We also hear a bit of history around the Morongo Valley Art Colony. Being part Cherokee, Sharon tells us a bit about ceremony, sweat lodges and a recent art installation event she hosted at her home to bring awareness to the disappearances of over 6,000 missing native American females – women and children.
At eight months old, after being born in Hollywood, Susan was brought to her mother’s burnt homestead cabin in Pipes Canyon. The family first lived under the stars and later in an Army tent. Susan was raised in upper Pipes Canyon – in what is known today at the Wildlands Conservancy. She attended a one-room schoolhouse, collected bottles for coins from Hollywood cowboys in Pioneertown and set pins at the original bowling alley there. Walking from school, Susan would walk through the movie sets of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, though the excitement was lost on her as she watched them doing the same thing over and over. Sometimes she’d ride her pony to and from school. Susan tells us about the community that at that time included the Golden Stallion Chinese restaurant (9:21), the Red Dog, the Hollywood influence and the rodeo grounds. By the time she was 23, Susan had five kids and was still running around the desert barefoot, even on the campus of College of the Desert in Palm Desert and UC Riverside – it was the late 60’s and early 70’s. In those years she’d read Tolstoy, Freud and Dostoyevsky and though she felt a kindred spirit with these authors, because all of them were men, the thought of being a writer herself didn't come until later. Looking back, Susan believes writing was in her blood as her mother wrote a column for the Pioneertown paper and Susan’s sister has also written a book. On her way to a mid-term just before graduation, Susan was in a car accident, which left her unconscious for 30 days . Her sister arranged with Susan’s professors to give her incompletes and she was able to graduate later, after writing one essay. In the midst of this, her husband left her. These days, Prescott, Arizona is home for Susan where she founded and directed the Southwest Writers Series and the Hassayampa Institute for Creative Writing at Yavapai College. Currently, Susan is Faculty Emerita at Yavapai College, teaches courses at Prescott College, and serves as Event Coordinator at the Peregrine Book Company in Prescott, Arizona. Susan still has ties to the Pipes Canyon area, visiting her brother who still lives in Pioneertown. This month (October 2019) Susan will be reading and selling her books at the following venues in the Morongo Basin: October 4 at 7 p.m. at Black Rock Nature Center, Yucca Valley October 5 at 4 p.m. at the Sun Alley Stage near Space Cowboy Books Monday, October 7 at 7 p.m. at Kip's Desert Book Club at The Palms Wonder Valley You can find Susan's books here. Teaching brought Gay Smith (left in photo above) to California, as after college graduation there was a glut of teachers on the east coast. She’d read about a fellow student who came to Corona, CA to interview, she followed suite and got the job on the spot. Having been in teaching for over 40 years, Gay talks about the changes she's witnessed in the students over the years. Gay's first experience with the desert was during the December holidays in the early 60's with a group of friends she’d met through teaching. The place they visited was her soon to be husband’s cabin on Copper Mountain Mesa. Though there was no electricity or water in the early days, Gay and her husband, John, continued to come back to the his cabin on weekends, all vacations, including the summer months. At some point, they decided it would be wise to at least run electricity to the cabin - which they did themselves, impressing the County code Inspector. When the kids came along, they added a room to the cabin and became permanent residents of North Joshua Tree in 1974. Gay talks about a developer who had a big vision for Pioneertown, found Gay and her husband John purchasing several acres in the area. The developer went broke and plans for the 'Golden Empire' fell through, but John and Gay remained. Thank Gay when you see her for being involved in making Mane Street in-accessible to cars and holding off the County from adding paved roads and sidewalks! In this episode, Gay takes us back in time to 1965 and one traffic light at Old Woman Springs Road and talks about tricks they used to find their home at night. Gay also talks about the history of Pappy & Harriet’s and tells of it's origins, including the biker gang fights, before it became the infamous music-lovers haven it is today. Gay owns the Pioneertown Wild West Theatre, which is a 501(c)3. You might be inclined to check out a show there or donate to the cause after hearing this interview. We had regular guests Joe Kincher & Jacob Balcom and their wives Jolie and Alicia join us for dinner and screening of Howling: New Moon Rising (a.k.a. Howling 7), a film by writer-producer-director-star Clive Turner. After we finished the film, we tried to make sense of it. It takes place in Pioneertown, CA, and takes place in Pappy + Harriet's western saloon. There's footage from other Howling films, and two guys working for the church to stop the lyncathropic curse...we think. This was a mess.
We discuss our installation of the @whiteknuckleoffroadproducts sliders on Jose's #80series #landcruiser. Then we talk about our trip from Pioneertown to Big Bear. Apparently, Cody didn't read his own itinerary and Jose tried to kill everyone.
In this week's episode, Barney Hoskyns and Mark Pringle are joined by Chris Campion all the way from Pioneertown, California. The subject of Chris' upcoming book, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, leads into a wide-ranging and discursive conversation about L.A. in the '60s and the music and madness of Arthur Lee and Charles Manson. Continuing the Southern California theme, the three men hear excerpts from a 1993 audio interview with the late Elliot Roberts in which the legendary manager talks about his client Joni Mitchell's house, the Eagles, and the impact of cocaine on the L.A. scene. Finally, in the archive highlights section, Mark selects an interview with Keith Richards' mother, a live review of Jimi Hendrix playing London's Bag O'Nails club in 1967 and – returning to the L.A. theme – a 1972 interview with Elliot Roberts' managerial/Asylum Records partner David Geffen. Produced by Jasper Murison-Bowie Pieces discussed: Inside Grime, Papa John Phillips, Arthur Lee, Devendra Banhart, Elliot Roberts, Little Feat, Fear and Loathing in Little Feat?, Lowell George, The Rolling Stones/Keith Richard's mum, Rik Gunnell, Jimi Hendrix @ Bag O'Nails, David Geffen, Talking Heads on Eno, Merle Haggard, Lenny Waronker and George Michael

A San Francisco Bay area native, Danielle Wall's introduction to the desert came at a young age with visits to her Grandpa's house in Yucca Valley. Fast forward to 2015, with a week to go on her lease in San Fran, she called her Grandpa and said she was moving to Yucca Valley in a week. Danielle didn't know anyone but her Grandpa when she moved here, but spent a year working for herself, catching odd jobs like pet-sitting or secretarial work, which helped her get the lay of the land and it's people. Danielle is now a General Manager at Rimrock Ranch, where the Joshua Trees meet the pines in Pioneertown. Thought she did have snakes as pets, Danielle didn't start out being a snake lover, having been an entomology major in college. She's since trained in snake handling and biology - dissecting them and working with live, but venom-less, rattlesnakes. Danielle says, "It's a thrill and it's cool to be around such a powerful creature." That thrill has turned into a free catch and release service Danielle offers in the Mojave with any donations she receives going to Animal Authority Rescue Team. In this episode, Danielle gives some tips on how to live in harmony with snakes and what you can do to keep them at a safe distance from your desert home. She also advises on what to do if you have a snake on your property and she can't get to you immediately, the consequences of trying to handle snakes yourself and what NOT to do if you get a snake bite. When she's not managing at the ranch or on a snake call, Danielle is a lingerie model. An admitted band nerd, Danielle says it's the last thing she ever expected to be doing. After gifting a boudoir photo of herself to her then husband, she started getting inquiries to come and model and it's just taken off from there. We also talk about the appeal of the tattooing process and how much work has gone into the Mojave Green tattoo around her neck. This episode is a little different than what you've heard so far. Typically, I sit down and have a casual one on one conversation for the entire 30 minutes. In this episode, I've had similar, shorter conversations with eleven desert women, asking them, in most cases, the same five or so questions. As you listen to the episode, you'll get the gist of the questions. How did this happen? Well, I sometimes bring the podcast to community events. I set up a table, have some handouts and introduce the podcast to people who may not have heard of it. Some folks have never heard of podcasts in general, while some know many of the people I've interviewed. Recently, I got the idea of not only setting up a table with information about the podcast, but of taking my recording equipment with me and doing 'woman on the street-style' interviews. It turned out to be really fun. The first four interviews in this episode were recorded at the Covington Park Fall Festival in Morongo Valley, on the further west end of the Morongo Basin. The remaining seven were recorded at the Landers Bizarre Bazaar. Most of the ladies, if not all, were not born here - they moved to the area for various reasons: jobs, creative work, housing affordability, a climate conducive to better health or just looking for a place to quiet down to listen to their inner voice. They give some recommendations about where they take out of town guests. The most popular places being Joshua Tree National Park, Pioneertown and Pappy & Harriet's, Landers and La Copine. And when asked what their favorite thing about living in the desert is, their answers ranged from being peaceful, calming and grounding to the desert's amazing colors and wildlife, to the people and activities and... the sky. The pictures of sunset and sky above are my own and, if you ask me or anyone who lives here, they don't do it justice. Special thanks to the willing participants: Donna Gowland, Kelly Moynihan, Mia Torres (stay tuned for her full episode in the coming weeks), Susan Abbott, Terry Burkhardt, Kim Fulleman, Jet Tucker, Debbie Solaris, Claudia Bucher, Claude Fenton and Diana. If you enjoy this episode, tell me why and what you liked best.
We're not sure about anything except we love Cowboys, Aliens and Ramen. INTRO: (00:00) Lulu thinks it's episode 41. It's not, this is episode 42. But ahhhh, what a great episode 41 was. Maybe we shouldn't have ditched our guest googlers just yet. For dinner she goes to Staraya Tamozhnya where they do molecular gastronomy. Also, Alison orders a $900 bottle of Sauternes Wine before taking in a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Mariinsky Theater.LULU’S 10K DAY - PIONEERTOWN, CA: (23:00) Lulu is staying at an eclectic villa in this hip desert community that was founded as a western movie set. Robin and Max were on their way to falling in love when Max brought Robin to Joshua Tree National Park to show her this desert place he loved. A few years later, they found themselves looking at property in Pipes Canyon, bought 22 acres and have lived there ever since. They've co-created a private retreat center there, drawing soul-weary travelers from cities around the world. When the Sawtooth Fire of 2006 swept through Pipes Canyon and Pioneertown, Robin & Max escaped their little piece of desert paradise through a wall of fire thinking their home was destroyed and they would have to rebuild. Robin credits a trough of water strategically dumped on their house from a fire-fighting helicopter for saving their home where they've lived for 20 years. After moving to Pipes Canyon, the mountains, mesas, flora and fauna inspired Robin so much, she wrote two television series and 10 more novels. Most of her books are historical fiction with females at the center of the stories, like 'The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn'. In this episode, Robin reads a small excerpt from her newest book, 'Atlantos - The Early Earthe Chronicles - Book 1' is the first in a trilogy of science fiction, a departure for Robin's writing, though she has had an interest in the 'beyond' since having a 'close encounter', at the age of two, in New Jersey. www.RobinMaxwell.com

In the 60's Constance and a friend left school, got to work and put away their money, eventually taking a cruise ship from their native Canada to England, where Constance began six years of world travel. Here first connections with desert were in Afghanistan and Iran. Constance arrived in California, eventually making her way to Pioneertown with her new partner, who was to begin work designing a project to turn Pioneertown into a resort community. The landowner went bust like spent gold mine and other developers began eyeing the property. Constance went into action, even obtaining her real estate license to head those developers off at the pass. Constance reminisces about how Pioneertown neighbors spent their time, riding horses or listening to Buzz Gamble at Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace. In this episode, we also talk a bit about what this desert area offers, specifically to women, and the value of taking time to travel the world.
The first time Christina came to the desert it was to ring in the new year at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown. She connected with some musicians who introduced her to various aspects of the desert, including the national park and Christina began splitting her time between Orange County, CA and the desert. During the transition, she also took up rock-climbing and has met and been trained by some of the most experienced and best climbers in the business. In this episode Christina also talks about desert dating experiences, along with a side of the desert community she was surprised to bear witness to and how being alone in the desert has helped her with setting some personal boundaries. Her love of desert plants and their medicinal value lead her to create 'Every Leaf Speaks'. Christina studied at The Gaia School of Healing & Earth Education and is in her second year of learning at Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, which is rooted in the Wise WOMBan Tradition. Christina recently began teaching classes on medicine making her in the Morongo Basin. We end the episode with a lovely poem by one of Christina's inspirations, Susun Weed.
