Are there tendencies within Christian tradition that put some versions of the faith in tension with core principles of democracy? What is “Authoritarian Reactionary Christianity?” How can a pluralistic society guard against the rise of political figures—including Donald Trump—aiming to weaponize this phenomenon? In this two-part conversation, we dive into these provocative questions with the Rev. Prof. David Gushee (Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University) and discuss his book Defending Democracy From Its Christian Enemies. Segments to look forward to in part 2: (02:12) Christianity in the reactionary politics of France and Germany in the 20th century   (07:54) The allure of authoritarian leaders who promise to fix cultural issues  (13:06) The idealization of a past Christian nation and the ubiquitous use of anti-LGBT rhetoric in policial mobilization (18:20) The difficulty of appealing to authoritarian-leaning Christians and the influence of leaders in those communities (32:30 ) “Covenantal democracy” rooted in the Baptist tradition (35:18) The importance of civic literacy and political ethics education among Christians to inoculate against authoritarian tendencies (40:00) The importance of long-term cultural and interpersonal work to build stronger democratic norms. Are modern habits around cleanliness, parenting, and social contact shaping your gut health more than you realise?  In this episode, Professor Tim Spector explains how gut microbes are shared between people - through relationships, daily contact, and the environments we live in, and why this matters for long-term health. You'll learn how human contact may be influencing your gut in ways most of us never consider. Tim explains why supporting gut microbiome is less about control and more about balance, and you'll learn simple ways to support a healthier gut through food, social connection and lifestyle habits. If your gut reflects the people you live with and the places you spend time, what small change could you make this week - in your home, your habits, or your social life - that might support your gut for the long term?

He explains Sia's augmented consulting model, where proprietary platforms and AI tools sit at the core of delivery—not as add-ons.The conversation also covers Sia's approach to growth through selective acquisitions, the balance between building and buying capabilities, and how culture-led integration supports scale. Joe and Matthieu close by discussing how AI is reshaping consulting economics, talent models, and why firms need to think in decades, not quarters, when building lasting value. In this episode you will learn:Why Sia Partners was built with global scale as a core ambitionHow founder commitment drives successful international expansionWhy early investment in AI and data created long-term advantageWhat augmented consulting looks like in practiceHow Sia approaches M&A without diluting cultureWhy consulting firms must think long-term to build real valueThis episode offers a long-term view on what it takes to build a global consulting platform—through sustained investment, founder leadership, and a clear belief in technology as a driver of scale and value.Connect with Matthieu:LinkedIn: Matthieu CourtecuisseWebsite: SIA-Partners.com Resources:SIA Partners Case StudySend us a textProf. Joe O'Mahoney helps boutique consultancies scale and exit. In this episode, we tackle the contested and often misunderstood question of Christian Nationalism. With two guests offering opposing perspectives—David Ramirez arguing in favor and Peter Burfeind raising concerns—we explore what the term actually means, where it comes from, and whether it can be squared with Lutheran theology. The conversation probes the relationship between Church and state, the limits of political authority, the nature of Christ's kingdom, and the risks of confusing the Gospel with national identity. Our aim is not heat, but clarity—testing claims carefully, naming real points of disagreement, and helping listeners think more precisely about faith, nation, and Christian witness in the public square. Everything we thought we knew about women in the Bible was shaped by centuries of erasure. In this groundbreaking episode, I sit down with Professor Tal Ilan, one of the world's leading historians on Jewish women in late antiquity, to uncover the real lives of women in the first century. From synagogue leaders to economic powerhouses, from temple participation to early Christian leadership, Prof. Ilan reveals the evidence that's been hiding in plain sight. Her research in the Lexicon of Jewish Names and the Feminist Commentary on the Babylonian Talmud Project has reshaped how scholars understand women's roles in ancient Judaism, and this conversation will transform how you read the New Testament. This isn't just history. This is about recovering the stories that were written out of Scripture and discovering what happens when we put them back in. Prof. Ilan walks us through inscriptions, archaeological evidence, and ancient texts that prove Jewish women held far more agency, influence, and leadership than we've been taught. And when we apply that context to figures like Mary Magdalene, Phoebe, Priscilla, and Junia, the New Testament comes alive in ways you've never seen before. In this episode you will learn:- Why 70% of the "silent, secluded woman" image is historically accurate, but the 30% that isn't changes everything- The archaeological evidence of women as synagogue leaders, donors, and patrons throughout the ancient Jewish world- How women participated in temple festivals, sacred spaces, and religious life in ways that contradict common assumptions- Why Mary Magdalene may actually be the founder of Christianity based on her role in the resurrection narrative- The truth about female apostles like Junia, Phoebe, and Priscilla and what their leadership tells us about early Christianity- How the destruction of the temple actually reduced women's religious participation compared to earlier periods- Why Paul's list of resurrection witnesses deliberately excluded women, and what that reveals about early Christian politics- The connection between Jesus's inclusive ministry and the women who became his closest followers- How rabbinic Judaism developed partly in response to Christianity's "New Testament" model- What modern Christians are missing when they read the Bible without understanding first-century Jewish women's real livesConnect with Prof. Tal Ilan:Prof. Ilan's groundbreaking work includes:The Lexicon of Jewish Names in Late AntiquityIntegrating Women into Second Temple HistorySUBSCRIBE TO THE DIG IN PODCASTYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thejohnnyovaCONNECT WITH JOHNNY OVAAll Things Johnny: https://linktr.ee/johnnyovaGet Johnny's Book, The Revelation Reset: https://a.co/d/hiUkW8H

High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for deaths globally. But what if your blood pressure numbers were only part of that story? In this episode, we're joined by leading cardiologist Dr Sanjay Gupta, who explains why blood pressure is not a disease, but often a scream for help. Together with ZOE's Chief Scientist, Professor Sarah Berry, he explores when blood pressure is a harmless response to stress, food, or movement, and when it signals real, long-term damage. You'll learn why blood pressure targets aren't universal, why worrying can make things worse, and why quality of life matters as much as numbers. This episode also breaks down what you can do to lower your blood pressure. Not quick fixes. Not pills. But everyday lifestyle changes that address the root cause. If your blood pressure is your body sending a message, what might it be asking you to change? Unwrap the truth about your food

In this Prof Responds episode, Professor Wamble reflects on listener responses to the “Best & Worst Teachers at Hogwarts” discussion and steps back to ask a larger question: What does it mean to teach in the shadow of war? Drawing on Hogwarts faculty, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Dumbledore's leadership, this episode explores how education changes under sustained threat, how silence functions as pedagogy, and why students, especially marginalized ones, so often bear the cost of adult indecision. The conversation connects the magical world to the present political moment, examining the dangers of ignoring reality, the limits of preparing students without transparency, and the ethical responsibility educators carry when the world outside the classroom is already on fire. This episode is invites us to reckon with power, authority, and the consequences of what schools choose to teach and what they refuse to name.

Artificial intelligence is advancing at an extraordinary pace, and education is being reshaped whether we are ready for it or not. In this episode, we discuss a new and fascinating book on this topic — Artificial Intelligence in Education: The Intersection of Technology and Pedagogy. The contributors are experts from around the world who are both educators and technically proficient. I'm joined by the editors of the book, who are leading experts in the field of learning technologies. Dr. Peter Ilic is a Senior Associate Professor in the Center for Language Research at the University of Aizu in Japan. Dr. Imogen Casebourne is the research lead at the Innovation Lab at the Digital Education Futures Initiative (DEFI) at Cambridge University. Prof. Rupert Wegerif is Professor of Education in the Faculty of have Education at the University of Cambridge and the founder and academic director of the Digital Education Futures Initiative (DEFI) at Hughes Hall, Cambridge University. The book and this conversation sit at the intersection, and sometimes the tension, between technologists and educators. Historically, educational technologies promised transformation but often end up reinforcing outdated models of learning. AI poses a new challenge that is fundamentally changing education. Together, we explore why simply adding AI to existing systems doesn't work, why dialogue between technology and pedagogy is now urgent, and how approaches like design-based research can help us develop educational AI more responsibly. We also discuss what it might mean to move toward a more dialogic understanding of education, one focused less on the transmission of knowledge and more on collaboration, problem-solving, and learning with both people and technology. At its core, this episode is a call for collaboration between educators, technologists, and policymakers and for taking an active role in shaping the future of AI in education, rather than being shaped by it. Because for decades, we've been told to fear it. “Fatty foods will clog your arteries and send your cholesterol through the roof.” Right? Well, it's not that simple. How ‘fat' affects your health depends on a number of factors, including the type of fat, the food matrix and even how it's produced. One thing is for sure, that single number on the front of a food packet, isn't going to give you the full story. I'm joined by Professor Sarah Berry to dig deeper into fat.
