In a precarious situation, Murr explains how he found himself dealing with racial dynamics, societal norms, and the evolving language surrounding these topics. When men grow up without clear role models or a sense of purpose, they're left to navigate life without a map. The result is frustration, uncertainty, and a quiet struggle to figure out where they fit in a world that often tells them they're either too much or not enough. Strength isn't about aggression, and confidence isn't about dominance—real masculinity comes from knowing who you are and standing firm in it. Reclaiming that means tuning out the noise, finding mentors who challenge and support growth, and building a life rooted in discipline, integrity, and self-respect.Adam Allred, an entrepreneur, speaker, and social media influencer, is known for his candid take on masculinity and personal growth. Raised in a military family, his adaptability and communication skills helped him build multiple businesses, including a garbage company he sold for $3.5 million. Today, he shares insights on the challenges modern men face, reflecting on his experiences in door-to-door sales, business success, and navigating relationships. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond!Quotes: “Life isn't happening to you, it's happening for you. Whatever happens is a blessing.” – Adam Allred“Weakness cannot exist in a power evolving universe, and so there's no place for weakness here. Complacency is death.” – Adam Allred“The greatest threat right now to society is weak masculinity, and we have to own that. We can't blame it on women. We can't blame it on our problems. This is a man issue.” – Adam Allred“The default setting of a human being is to seek challenges and tackle hard things. When they started walking, no one had to encourage them—they just went for it. They'd fall, get back up, and keep going.” – Matt BeaudreauTakeaways:Commit to never quitting when facing challenges, using setbacks as opportunities to develop personal character and resilience.Practice switching between different "masculinity hats" by being intentional about your energy and approach in various life roles (husband, father, entrepreneur).Identify and challenge societal programming that limits your potential, focusing on continuous self-improvement and authentic personal growth.Have honest, open conversations with your children about real-world challenges, supporting their individual passions without forcing conformity.Set clear boundaries in relationships, understanding that respect matters more than being "nice" - be willing to walk away if core values are consistently disrespected. Conclusion:Real masculinity isn't defined by meeting outside expectations but by having the courage to grow, stand by one's principles, and contribute to others without losing a sense of identity. It requires discipline, accountability, and the strength to make difficult but necessary choices. A man who respects himself and his values doesn't seek approval—he builds a life rooted in purpose and conviction. In the end, true strength comes not from dominance or validation, but from the quiet confidence of knowing who you are and what you stand for.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Monday admitted that there was a "gap" between him giving out gift certificates to lawmakers and social norms.
We've been thinking a lot about culture recently, and reflecting on how–whether or not we're aware of it–culture is a force that's always exerting influence on us. It's typically only when we get outside of our daily routine, our city or even our country, and are confronted with new ways of doing things that we can clearly see the values, norms, and practices that make up the culture we live in. Today, we're re-running a thought-provoking conversation we had with Michele Gelfand about notions of what she calls “tight” and “loose” cultures. It's a conversation that helps illuminate some of the invisible forces of culture, and also sheds light on how understanding these forces helps us better navigate the world. We hope you'll take another listen and enjoy. Have a question for Russ? Send it our way in writing or via voice memo, and it might be featured on an upcoming episode. Today, we unpack the book "Predictably Irrational" by Dan Ariely. In this book profile, we explore the fascinating world of behavioral economics, where Dan Ariely reveals how our supposedly rational decisions are actually governed by predictable patterns of irrationality. Charles breaks down key psychological principles that influence our everyday choices, from how relativity affects our satisfaction to why "free" makes us lose our logical thinking abilities.Key topics include:• Relativity and comparison - How we evaluate things based on comparisons rather than absolute value, affecting our satisfaction with purchases and even our salaries• Anchoring and arbitrary coherence - Why the first price we see becomes a mental benchmark that influences all future related decisions• The power of "free" and the distinction between social vs. market norms - How we irrationally respond to free offers and why mixing money with social relationships often backfires• Loss aversion and the paradox of choice - Why parting with possessions feels painful and how too many options lead to decision paralysis• The placebo effect and expectations - How our perceptions shape our reality, from wine tasting to pain reliefPredictably Irrational Book: https://www.amazon.com/Predictably-Irrational-Hidden-Forces-Decisions/dp/006135323X-Website and live online programs: http://ims-online.comBlog: https://blog.ims-online.com/Podcast: https://ims-online.com/podcasts/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlesagood/Twitter: https://twitter.com/charlesgood99Chapters: (00:00) Introduction(01:00) How Comparisons Shape Our Decisions (04:00) Technique: Anchoring(07:15) The Magic of "Free" (08:30) Social Norms vs. Market Norms (10:30) Technique: Procrastination and How to Overcome It (12:00) Loss Aversion and the IKEA Effect (13:45) Tip: The Paradox of Choice (15:15) Expectations and How They Shape Our Experience (17:00) The Placebo Effect and Pricing Perception (18:30) Conclusion

What is the best diet for someone with diabetes? Dr. Thomas Campbell shares his research comparing the DASH Diet and a whole food plant-based diet. Their effects on insulin resistance and blood sugar levels are then examined. Although both diets showed improvement, the participants experienced superior results while eating the WFPB diet. Dr. Campbell explains why when he joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast. In the Interview: Plant-Based Diet for Diabetes Management: The interview emphasizes the effectiveness of a whole food plant-based diet in managing diabetes, contrasting it with other dietary approaches like the keto diet, which merely suppresses symptoms rather than addressing underlying issues. Influence of Family Legacy: Dr. Campbell reflects on the profound influence of his father, Dr. T. Colin Campbell who co-authored The China Study, on his career choice in medicine, emphasizing that his motivation stemmed from passion rather than pressure. Challenges in Medical Nutrition Education: He highlights a significant gap in knowledge among medical professionals regarding diet and its effects on health, particularly in treating conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Social Norms and Health: Dr. Campbell discusses how social norms contribute to unhealthy eating habits, making it difficult for individuals to change their diets despite knowing the health risks associated with poor nutrition. Patient Education and Openness: Dr. Campbell stresses the importance of patient openness to dietary changes and the need for healthcare providers to engage in meaningful conversations rather than overwhelming patients with information. EP:128 Our kids' head-banging, rocking, and constant movement aren't just concerning behaviors - they're natural ways they're trying to regulate their nervous systems. As a mom of preemies, I know how much deep pressure and sensory input my babies needed to soothe and settle. Things like pacifiers and thumb-sucking aren't just social norms, they're our kids' innate ways of calming their developing brains and bodies. Instead of stripping away these natural regulation methods, we need to observe the patterns, support their needs, and create space for their incredible ability to self-regulate. It's a journey, but so worth it for their long-term mental health. Links & Resources:

In East Asia, high marriage rates coexist with some of the world's lowest fertility rates. So, why are so few children born in these societies? And how is this related to the strongly embedded cultural and Confucianist influences?Professors Sunha Myong, Jungjae Park, and Junjian Yi investigate the cultural and socioeconomic factors shaping these trends. Using a mathematical model, the team explore how deeply rooted social norms – like unequal childcare and stigma against out-of-wedlock births – impact fertility decisions. Importantly, they examine how shifts in gender roles and government policies could hold the key to reversing declining birth rates.Read the original research: doi.org/10.1093/jeea/jvaa048

Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University, Dan has dedicated his career to uncovering the irrational patterns that drive our decisions. He's the author of multiple bestselling books, including Predictably Irrational, The Upside of Irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty, where he explores the predictable mistakes we make and how understanding them can lead to better outcomes in life, business, and relationships. Join us for an eye-opening conversation with Dan Ariely as he explores the hidden biases and patterns that influence our decisions, from everyday choices to life-altering moments. Why do we often invest more time deciding on small purchases than major life decisions? How does regret shape our behavior, and why do we favor inaction over action? What to Listen For Introduction – 00:00:00 What is regret, and how does it bias us toward inaction over action? How did Dan's experience in the hospital lead to groundbreaking research on irrational behaviors? Trust, Relationships, and Long-Term Success – 00:40:02 How does trust develop in long-term relationships, and why does it thrive under social norms? What role does empathy play in fostering trust and cooperation? Why are open-ended interactions more effective at building trust than transactional exchanges? Actionable Insights for Better Decision-Making – 00:46:00 How can we overcome regret, procrastination, and indecision in daily life? She is interested in the cognitive and evolutionary roots of economic and political institutions. In other words: what are the links between the design of the mind and the design of institutions? She aims to tackle this topic by focusing on the cognitive foundations of ownership. In this episode, we start by talking about how social minds may generate societal phenomena. We discuss coordination games, and how they can be used to model social norms. We then get specifically into ownership, the domains of our lives it applies to, and where beliefs about ownership come from. In the second part of the interview, we talk about mental health in PhD students, and the challenges they go through. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Has Behavioral Grooves turned into a political podcast? Not really (ok, maybe kinda it has - but for just a few weeks, we promise ). With the 2024 election days away, however, it's felt nearly unavoidable for many people, including us. Attending the Norms and Behavior Change Conference (NoBeC), titled, Democracy Under Threat, sparked some essential thoughts and insights that we feel compelled to share. Democracy relies on fragile social norms that are under serious threat right now. From startling statistics about the rise of autocracies worldwide to the surge in misinformation, it's clear that a renewed commitment to democratic norms is needed now more than ever. So, here's a crucial question for all of us to consider: Is party loyalty more important than the stability of our democracy? Join us to rethink democracy—not just as a system but as a collective responsibility – bound together by shared beliefs. Your voice matters, your vote is essential, and together, we can help fortify democracy. If you don't have a plan for where and when you're going to vote, put one together. Get a friend to vote with you. You may feel disenfranchised or fatigued or angry or sad…just make sure you vote. And put a happy spin on your voting experience: celebrate the fact that we can vote by baking an election cake (or election pie or even election cookies) to bring to the polls! Democracy is fragile, please treat it with respect. ©2024 Behavioral Grooves Special Thanks to: Cristina Bicchieri, Kaushik Basu, Diana Mutz, Gretchen Helmke, Horacio Larreguy, Christoph Abels, Ryan Enos, Robert Talisse, Giulia Maimone, Erik Groenendyk, Nikos Nikiforkis, Cesar Nuñez, Karine Nyborg, Jan Voelkel and Ryan Enos for their participation in NoBeC and their fascinating research! Dr. Mary M. Alcaro, a visiting assistant professor of literature at Bryn Mawr College, takes us on a captivating journey through the intersections of plague, trauma, and Middle English texts. This episode kicks off our new interview series with Dr. Alcaro, who shares her path from undergraduate curiosity to a dissertation on the social and psychological effects of the Black Death. Through her fascinating insights, we uncover the profound influence of the plague on language and its lasting impact on literary theory and the history of medicine. Filled with humor and introspection, this conversation shines a new light on medieval literature and its contemporary relevance. Our discussion takes a closer look at Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Book of the Duchess," highlighting how Chaucer subtly addresses the plague's impact without explicitly mentioning it. Dr. Alcaro explains the use of terms like "wound" to reflect the collective suffering of the audience, drawing intriguing parallels to modern-day euphemisms and the language of trauma. We also explore the concept of a "history of omission," where what is left unsaid can be as revealing as what is recorded, and how language evolves in response to shared traumatic experiences. This episode offers a thought-provoking examination of how literary works navigate the complexities of human grief and communal memory. Rounding out the episode, we delve into the unexpected connections between medieval melancholia and modern-day humor, uncovering tales that resonate with contemporary comedic sensibilities. Dr. Alcaro reflects on the historical context of forced positivity during pandemics, drawing parallels to our recent experiences with COVID-19. We contemplate the long-term impacts of the pandemic on literature and society, pondering how themes of disease, isolation, and sensory perception might shape future works.
