A 54 Hour Sprint to Drive Positive Change Imagine dedicating a weekend to transforming an idea into a tangible business, surrounded by experienced mentors, industry leaders, and a community of like-minded women, all committed to making a real impact. This is the essence of Techstars Startup Weekend Women Dublin, where female entrepreneurs come together to build enterprises that tackle pressing challenges in society and business. Taking place from 21-23 March at Accenture Song, Dublin, this intensive event brings together women of diverse backgrounds - some stepping into entrepreneurship for the first time, others looking to take their experience in a new direction. The theme, "Business for Good," reflects a growing movement where commercial success and social impact go hand in hand. And, even though it says women in the title, everyone is welcome! For more information Eventbrite Booking Startup Weekend Championing Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurship In today's business landscape, sustainability, ethical leadership, and social impact are no longer afterthoughts, they are driving forces for change. Female-led startups are leading the way, tackling challenges from climate change to financial inclusion, from education to ethical AI. Caitlin Hafer, the lead organiser and founder of What the Hack, has shaped this year's event around that very idea. "Entrepreneurship isn't just about profit, it's about purpose," she says. "This weekend is about proving that business can create real, positive change." The People Behind the Weekend Pulling together an event like this takes a team of experienced organisers, dedicated volunteers, and hands-on mentors. Alongside Caitlin, the planning team, Israel Ngombo, Deirdre McCarthy, Sharon Ramsey, Miren M. Samper, and Poorvi Gupta have worked to create a weekend that's both challenging and inspiring for participants. Mentors play a crucial role across the weekend, offering real-world advice, strategic insights, and the occasional reality check. This year, participants will have the opportunity to work with Aine Mulloy, Eugene Mitchell, Gloria Rull, Jenny Ervine, Laura Enache, Lauren O'Reilly, Leyla Karaha, Melissa Roa, Mike O'Dea, Sarah Fleisberg, and Sorcha Mulligan. (I'll also be there, bringing my own experience as a business mentor, having previously served as a judge at last year's event). Speaking of judges, Sunday's pitch session will be the defining moment of the weekend, where teams present their businesses to an expert panel. This year, the judging panel includes Anne Brady, Fiona Nagle, Raisa Pokrovskaya, and Mairin Murray - leaders in business, investment, and social impact. Their role? To offer constructive feedback, challenge assumptions, and highlight which ideas have real potential. What Happens Over the Weekend? Friday night is all about getting started. Participants pitch their ideas in one-minute presentations, after which teams form around the strongest concepts. Saturday is the big workday. With guidance from mentors, teams refine their business models, customer validation strategies, and product concepts, ensuring that they are building something that can work beyond the weekend. Sunday brings the final push. Teams polish their pitches before presenting them to the judges and a wider audience. Some will win prizes. Others will walk away with something just as valuable, a business idea with the potential to grow into something much bigger. "We're looking for ideas that go beyond the weekend," says Caitlin, "it's not just about innovation, it's about creating something with lasting impact." Why It Matters: Closing the Funding Gap Despite the success of female entrepreneurs, access to funding remains a significant challenge. Globally, startups founded solely by women received just 2% of venture capital funding in 2023. In Europe, that figure was 1.8%. In Ireland, the numbers are improving. A Tech Ireland report found that one in four startups that raised investment in 2022 had a fe...

Jay Fajardo, Executive Director of IdeaSpace & QBO and Jeremy Au discussed 1. Philippines Founder Exit: Jay's journey into tech began in 1983, when his father gifted him a Sinclair ZX81 computer, inspiring him to teach himself programming. By 15, he developed payroll software that he sold to a distributor, marking his entry into entrepreneurship. In the late 1990s, as technology director at BusinessWorld, he led its transition to the web, making it the first Philippine news outlet online. He later founded Airborne Access in 2002, deploying Wi-Fi to over 700 locations across the Philippines. The company was acquired by PLDT in 2008, demonstrating Jay's ability to innovate and scale in an emerging market. 2. Startup Community Hubs: They discussed the Philippines' potential as a tech hub, supported by its 114 million population and strong English fluency. Despite these advantages, the country struggled to attract venture capital in its early days compared to Indonesia. Jay highlighted foundational efforts like Roof Camp (2009) and the first Startup Weekend (2011) in Manila, which helped create a vibrant startup community. Initiatives such as IdeaSpace Ventures (founded in 2013) and Kubo fostered innovation through funding and education. The diaspora played a crucial role, with Filipino professionals from Silicon Valley returning to share global expertise, while challenges like brain drain persisted. 3. AI Disrupting BPO & Services: AI emerged as a pivotal theme, with its potential to disrupt the $30 billion BPO sector, which employs 1.3 million people. Jay advocated for local startups to develop AI-driven solutions to replace and improve existing systems. The conversation also touched on the pandemic's impact, which accelerated digital payment adoption and fostered hyperlocal businesses such as cloud kitchens. Despite challenges like limited middle-management talent and ongoing migration of skilled workers abroad, Jay remained optimistic about the ecosystem's ability to adapt and innovate. Jeremy and Jay also touched on the increasing focus on follow-on funding for mature startups, niche applications of AI, and opportunities for local startups to exit through acquisitions or stock exchange listings. They reflected on early-stage startups as key to reinvigorating the ecosystem and Jay's experience balancing entrepreneurship with family life. === Watch, listen or read the full insight at www.bravesea.com/blog/philippines-startup-community Nonton, dengar atau baca wawasan lengkapnya di www.bravesea.com/blog/philippines-startup-community 观看、收听或阅读全文,请访问 www.bravesea.com/blog/philippines-startup-community Xem, nghe hoặc đọc toàn bộ thông tin chi tiết tại www.bravesea.com/blog/philippines-startup-community Get transcripts, startup resources & community discussions at www.bravesea.com WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VakR55X6BIElUEvkN02e TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bravesea Spotify English: https://open.spotify.com/show/4TnqkaWpTT181lMA8xNu0T Bahasa Indonesia: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Vs8t6qPo0eFb4o6zOmiVZ Chinese: https://open.spotify.com/show/20AGbzHhzFDWyRTbHTVDJR Vietnamese: https://open.spotify.com/show/0yqd3Jj0I19NhN0h8lWrK1 YouTube English: https://www.youtube.com/@JeremyAu?sub_confirmation=1 Apple Podcast English: https://podcasts.apple.com/sg/podcast/brave-southeast-asia-tech-singapore-indonesia-vietnam/id1506890464 Learn more about Nika.eco! Successful Return for Dublin's StartUp Weekend for Women "Why do we organize a Startup Weekend event focused on Women?" asks Leyla Karaha. "It's important to create a safe space for aspiring women tech entrepreneurs to kickstart their businesses." First event in 2021 In 2021, Leyla organised the first event, which was open to all, but the turnout was telling. Out of 15 pitches, only one was from a woman. Similarly, among the nine teams formed, only one had a mixed-gender composition. Recognizing the need for change, in 2022, she pivoted to focus on organising women-centric events, and the results have been nothing short of remarkable. Techstars Startup Weekends Techstars Startup Weekends, lasting 54 hours, offer unparalleled experiential education for both technical and non-technical entrepreneurs. From Friday night pitches to Sunday night demos, participants engage in brainstorming, business plan development, and prototype creation, all aimed at fostering action, innovation, and education. The overarching theme of the recent event has been the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Social Innovation. The Winners In first place was Moop, a venture dedicated to fixing poor reporting with smart data analytics for regulated industries, while contributing to societal good. Second place went to Flit.ie, focusing on financial literacy for women, and third place to Glot AI, an AI-powered language tutor facilitating language learning anytime, anywhere. Panel of Judges The panel of judges for this recent event included Áine Mulloy, Business Development Manager at Startup Loft Accelerator, Amazon Web Services (AWS); Adebola Olomo, CEO of Deefrent Media Agency; Mark Peters, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at WakeUp Capital; Dr Toluwani Akaehomen, Director and Principal Leadership, Learning, and People Development Consultant at Vantage Dymensions; and, Billy Linehan, StartUp Ballymun and Consultant at Celtar Advisers. Hello and welcome back to another episode of Her HypeSquad with Bosstrack In this episode I talk with Candis Hickman, a Spiritual Life Coach and Marketing Mentor for business leaders. We talk about storytelling and how it can help new leaders communicate more effectively and build trust, we talk about her slow year experience and what she has planned for 2023. About Candis Candis Hickman is a Spiritual Life Coach and Marketing Mentor for business leaders, a public speaker and storyteller, and former on-camera host and podcaster. Throughout her decade-long career as a coach and creative professional, Candis has challenged clients and audiences to overcome their fear, build their stand-out personal brand and become known for their unforgettable stories. Born and raised in Australia, Candis started her career as an Occupational Therapist. But when a move to the United States in 2011 resulted in the loss of her professional credentials, she was forced to forge a new path. With no formal training or experience, Candis went on to secure work as an on-camera host and commercial model before transitioning into the coaching industry in 2015. It is here that she began teaching rising leaders how to develop, expand and manage their personal brand and has since guided 300+ clients and students to build brands they love anchored by their unique purpose. Candis holds a degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Queensland, Australia as well as certificates in Health Coaching and Image Consulting. She has spoken on diverse platforms such as the Small Business Expo, StartUp Weekend, Women for Success Summit and LIT College Tour, and has been the talent for brands including Schwarzkopf Professional, Wilson Sporting Goods, LifeFitness, and Virgin Trains, to name a few. In this episode, Rob and Ileana are joined by Alex Santana, VC and Startup Business Development Manager at AWS (Amazon Web Services) in Mexico. Alex shares his really unique "early" perspective having been a witness to the growth of "entrepreneurial economies" across Latin America over the last 10+ years. He tells stories of having helped grow some of the best known global entrepreneurial support organizations, StartUp Weekend, Techstars, SeedStars and NXTP Labs into Latin America and Mexico. Alex's father and grandfather were businessmen who exposed him to life of entrepreneurship. He is a Civil and Industrial Engineer by his studies, whose first technology efforts were in construction, and has now become a well known "community builder" across LatAm. He forecasts his vision of the next chapter of what he calls a "maturing of the entrepreneurial economy" across Latin America and Mexico, which he says was accelerated by the Pandemic. Prior to his current tenure at AWS, Alex previously served as Regional Manager LATAM at Seedstars, Regional Manager at Techstars, Country Manager at NXTP LABS Mexico and he was a three time startup founder himself in Colombia and Mexico. He and his fiancé Rebecca live together with their beloved cats in Mexico City. Building and creating authentic digital connections can be challenging, but does it need to be? As an early-stage entrepreneur, Hoyin Cheung began chasing the overarching vision that is an entrepreneur's pitfall: building based on what people say they want — even though it's not actually what they want. But catering to what consumers think they want ultimately led Hoyin to develop a technology that was a solution to their needs. Hoyin created a platform that delivers what social media cannot: a place to connect authentically and cultivate relationships digitally. In this episode of Access To Anyone, Michael Roderick sits down with Hoyin Cheung, Founder and CEO of Remo.co, to talk about humanizing the online experience. Hoyin discusses the importance of authenticity in social media, the value of digitally creating natural interactions, and the importance of collaborating in virtual environments.

She has been podcasting since 2005, and was part of the birth of podcasting as an industry. In 2007, Jennifer founded National Podcast Post Month (aka NaPodPoMo), a community event that encourages folks to create 30 podcasts in 30 days during the month of November. This event gave new podcasters a chance to "fail fast and get good" while motivating veteran podcasters to experiment with new technology and new podcast formats. This year, NaNoPodMo is celebrating its 14th anniversary of inspiring podcast innovation. With the recent popularity of live audio platforms like Clubhouse and new live audio features like Twitter Spaces, she now hosts live weekly audio sessions on both platforms. Rahim also shares some of his biggest challenges as a founder.“It could be because they have some disability that might prevent them from being there in person. But they've got the motivation, they've got the skill, they've got the know-how, and they're able to create, like this really compelling experience for their prospect without ever leaving their home. And that is most definitely the direction we're headed. And I think it will become the new norm again, with some selective, selective in person.” - Rahim FazalToday on Startups for Good we cover:-The role family and extended family play for a founder-The changes in jobs as more companies utilize remote workers-Human centered skill sets-Training people in sales and how it has changed-How to deal with imposter syndrome as a founderConnect with Rahim on Twitter https://twitter.com/rahimthedream and find out more about SV Academy on Twitter https://twitter.com/SVAhq and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/svahq/ and their website https://sv.academySubscribe, Rate & Share Your Favorite Episodes! Thanks for tuning into today's episode of Startups For Good with your host, Miles Lasater. Dave Parker is an entrepreneur's Superman, ready to save them from disaster that could strike after being swept away by the passion of an idea.  So there's some dramatic exaggeration there, but it's true that many entrepreneurs are blinded by an idea and dreams of success, without exploring financial realities or even whether their idea is viable.  Dave is more than qualified to advise startups. He has founded multiple companies over the past 20 years, sold some, and served as a CEO and board member for others. These days, Dave spends 80 percent of his time helping founders actually land the deal that they started and 20 percent of his time involved with community development and community building work around startups.  He's been involved in a leadership role at Startup Weekend, and it was in part that experience that sowed the seed for Dave's book Trajectory: Startup—Ideation to Product/Market Fit, released on April 13, 2021.   Dave noted people would leave the Startup Weekend overwhelmed with passion for their business idea. They'd be saying things like “I've met my startup soulmate!” and were ready to quit their day-jobs with only an untested idea and no sense of the financials.   Killing Bad Ideas Fast Is A Great Option  Says Dave: “There's this phrase and startup land that the idea doesn't matter, only execution matters, which assumes by default, that it is a good idea.  “If it's a bad idea, you're just going to fail faster. And I think failing fast is a really bad idea. I grew up a son of a single mom on food stamps. So failure wasn't an option. I think killing bad ideas fast is a great option. It allows you to take the framework of learning and understanding what makes a great idea. And then applying that to your next idea if this isn't the only one.”     However, not everyone gets carried away by their idea. Some people don't have ideas but want to become founders. Dave met a woman at a seminar who was such a case, and she didn't know how to think about ideas. So his book includes a chapter on the 11 frameworks for ideas.  When it comes to financials, many startups don't focus enough time on them, or have the wrong financial model for their industry. This prompted Dave to investigate and he discovered that there are basically 14 revenue models in tech, including things like services, subscription services, market places, and new media.   Says Dave: “Hopefully, your startup idea is unique. But how you make money is never unique. And there have been very little changes with those financial models over the last six plus years.”  See the link below for the free excerpt from Dave's book available on DKParker.com where you can access the 14 revenue models detailed in the book.  A Book From Blog Posts  The second thing that prompted Dave to write Trajectory was that he fielded lots of calls or emails from entrepreneurs about their startups. The good thing about this was that their questions often led to blog post ideas; the bad, he often had to repeat himself, or direct an enquiry to his blog.  “After a while, I looked at my 150 blog posts and went: ‘Ha! That actually might be a book. So I started compiling them into the pieces.”  Some of the blog posts had added components from other authors, because Dave wanted to make sure he gave credit to them. Dave realized that he needed to include the 50 books that he believes are the most important 50 books in startups.   “You'll find that throughout the book, I've gone to great deliberate effort to really give credit where it's due to the standing on the shoulders of giants, if you will, the people who've written some amazing things.”  A Diverse Range Of Book Blurbs  Angel investor and venture capitalist Dave Berkus has written a blurb for Trajectory's cover, and describes Dave's book as “Awesome . . . this will be the handbook for startup founders.”  Dave was strategic in his request for blurbs for the book's cover, which are a powerful component of a book's marketing. He wanted them to be diverse from the start, and secured blurbs from an amazing group of people.  Dave covers a lot more in this interview, including product market fit, customer profiles, business categories, scaling a business, the importance of the customer interview, and his writing process.  LINKS Twitter Instagram LinkedIn DKParker.com Startup Revenue Models  SUBSCRIBE TO THE PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts.
