How can we improve the decision making in others? When we are delivering adventure to others, it isn't just the leader that needs to have good judgment. In every activity, there is a degree of decision-making skills that participants are going to need to be able to have, and if they don't, the odds of achieving a good outcome start to go down. There is of course another dimension to this in that many guides and instructors aren't just leading guests, friends or family. They may also be supervising or working with other guides or instructors. In this episode, we are joined by master guide, instructor, outdoor educator and friend of the show Bruce Wilson. Bruce returns to Delivering Adventure to explore how we can help others to improve their decision-making skills. When it comes to outdoor education and leadership training, Bruce is literally a Jack of all trades. He also provides coaching and guiding through his company Warrior Wolf Guide Services and Coaching. In this episode of Delivering Adventure, Bruce shares key strategies that leaders can use to help others to improves their decision making.Key takeawaysHow can we help others to make better decisions?Trust Them: Whether we like it or not, we have to trust the decision making and judgement of others. Micromanaging everything is not a sustainable option for anyone in a leadership position, and it can be argued that that isn't even leadership!Create Opportunities: We need to give people the opportunity to make decisions. Decision-making is a skill. To develop skills, people need time on task to practice.Right Process: Teaching them the right process can help to set them up for success. Part of this requires us to model and then explain what a good decision-making process is.Go to Completion: It is important to let people bring their decisions to completion: this allows them to see and experience the consequences firsthand. This increases learning.Take it Seriously: Treat every moment as if it is real. This can eliminate the risk of developing bad habits. It also maximizes the learning.Guest BioWhen it comes to outdoor education and leadership training, Bruce is literally a Jack of all trades. Bruce is an ACMG Hiking Guide. He now coaches founders to reclaim energy and focus using breathwork, nervous-system training, and AI-powered operating systems.   Key takeaways: Capacity beats hustle: Your brain's bandwidth drops when energy is split between yesterday's regrets and tomorrow's worries; calm focus raises the quality of every business decision. Breath first, then scale: A 10–15 minute daily breathwork practice can clear emotional noise, improve focus, and prepare you to implement systems and strategy. Good vs. bad stress: Brief, chosen stressors (e.g., an ice bath) can train regulation; chronic, ruminative stress erodes creativity, relationships, and revenue. Creativity needs calm: You create solutions in a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state, not while stuck in sympathetic (fight-or-flight). AI as leverage, not crutch: Use AI to (1) shortcut routine tasks, (2) act as a thought partner to structure ideas, and (3) expand possible solutions—while you retain human judgment. Founder standards: Roy only works with leaders willing to build a wellness routine; clarity and time come first, scaling second. From rock bottom to practice: Breathwork gave Roy just enough power to step back from a failing venture, accept worst-case outcomes, and rebuild. Personalize the routine: Ice, sauna, PT, meditation—pick what fits your life; the goal is consistent regulation, not a checklist.   How to connect with the guest   Website (Freedom Score survey): https://www.atpbos.com/ LinkedIn: Roy Castleman   Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Chuck says: "As a Type 1 Diabetic and Traumatic Brain Injury survivor, I have faced many personal health challenges. For years I was searching for practical and impactful ways to improve my health. In 2015 I was reintroduced to breathwork, and after feeling the benefits as well as the massive shift this brought into my life, I switched professions and dedicated my life to helping others discover their own personal power to help themselves.Since then I have traveled worldwide studying different breathwork modalities. My first introduction to conscious breathwork was through the Wim Hof Method, which included weeks of instruction from Wim Hof himself. I was the first American Instructor to help lead the Wim Hof winter expeditions in Poland, and I continue to expand my knowledge in this and other breathwork modalities. Now, for more than half a decade, I have been working in a healthcare setting applying foundational and functional breath coupled with specific breathwork protocols to help reduce chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. My goal is to empower people through their own personal and individual breathwork.""Everyone's physiology is different, I know there is no cookie cutter approach to optimal health, however I believe that functional breathing can positively impact everyone."

Episode #96 – Chuck McGee III: Breathing Through the Ice and Everything Else This one's a deep breath in and a blast of cold air out. Chuck McGee III—aka @icedvikingbreathworks—joins me for a wild and wide-ranging conversation about breathwork, recovery, resilience, and the power of the cold. Chuck is a certified Wim Hof Method instructor who has helped thousands reconnect to their breath, their bodies, and their purpose—sometimes through submerging themselves in icy water. But Chuck's journey isn't all frozen rivers and calm breathing. We talk about his early life fighting in bars, how he dealt with over 20 brain injuries, and how those experiences ultimately led him to explore the transformative power of breath. From suicidal ideation to leading breath workshops around the world, Chuck's story is raw, real, and full of unexpected turns. We dig into: ·         How breathwork can shift your nervous system in seconds ·         Why he voluntarily gets into freezing cold water on purpose ·         The difference between stress and trauma—and how to work with both ·         Rebuilding a life after repeated head trauma ·         Finding peace after chaos This is more than a conversation - it's a breath of fresh (and freezing) air. How do our human needs affect our judgement? What happens fro our decision making if our needs are not being met?Using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Bruce Wilson joins Chris and Jordy to discuss the relationship between needs and judgment.Bruce Wilson is an ACMG Hiking Guide, a sea kayak guide and guide trainer for the Association of Sea Kayak Guides. He is an avalanche educator for the Canadian Avalanche Association.Bruce is a certified instructor in the Wim Hof Method, he has a master's degree in leadership, and is a Vision Quest instructor, just to name a few of his many qualifications and certifications.Bruce currently instructs the Outdoor Recreation Management Program at Capilano University in North Vancouver. He also provides coaching and guiding through his company Warrior Wolf Guide Services and Coaching and teaches avalanche and survival courses for Canada West Mountain School. In this episode of Delivering Adventure, Bruce walks us through the intricacies of how needs affect judgment using real life stories and examples. This is a thoughtful and engaging conversation that ends with a look at how some First Nations peoples have prioritized human needs in relation to how we contribute within a community.Key TakeawaysHow do our needs affect our judgement?Needs Checklist: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs works like a checklist that we can use to help us to identify where people are at and what needs to happen to enable them to reach their full potential.Psychological and Physiological Needs: When these needs are not being met, our entire focus can become consumed trying to meet them. This can cause us to develop tunnel vision as we work to get warmer or more comfortable. Being low on energy or being dehydrated can also erode our ability to collect and analyze information accurately.Safety and Security Needs: Our risk tolerance can cause us to perceive the risk around us in ways that are not accurate. If we do not feel that we are in a physically or psychological safe space, we are more likely to ignore our other needs like feeling connected socially to a group.Communicating Risk to Others: It's important to ensure that we are using language and framing information in a way that allows our audience to understand the risk accurately. This can help to improve their ability to make more informed choices.Love and Belonging Needs: People inherently want to feel that they are a part of the group. If they do not feel they belong to the group, they are more likely to make decisions that cause them to behave in a way where they are trying to increase their popularity. This can cause people to become manipulative or to undertake other attention seeking behaviours.Esteem Needs: If our esteem needs are not met, we are going to feel that we are not respected, and we may be less likely to trust others. When esteem needs are not met, we can start to develop self doubt. This can lead to us to second guess our choices. If our confidence is being eroded, it will directly undermine our competence.Self-Actualized Decision Making: This is when we can make reasoned and objective decisions by being open to the fact that we may not know everything. When we are self actualized, we are aware that we may not have all the answers and instead of having this undermine our confidence, it actually increases it.Guest BioWhen it comes to outdoor education and leadership training, Bruce is literally a Jack of all trades. About the Guest(s): Dr. Chad Woolner is an industry leader in functional medicine, focusing on innovative approaches to combating chronic health issues. As a clinician and host of the Simplified Functional Medicine podcast, Dr. Woolner emphasizes practical methods for improving patient health outcomes through stress resilience and hormetic strategies. Dr. Andrew Wells is a renowned expert in the realm of functional medicine, known for his expertise in stress management and holistic health practices. As a co-host on the Simplified Functional Medicine podcast, Dr. Wells brings valuable insights into the latest research and strategies for enhancing health through lifestyle and physiological interventions. Episode Summary: In this episode of the Simplified Functional Medicine podcast, Dr. Chad Woolner and Dr. Andrew Wells delve into the often-misunderstood topic of stress. Challenging the conventional advice to reduce stress, they explore the concept of hormesis, advocating for the introduction of good stressors as a solution to chronic health problems. This episode details how calculated stress can heighten resilience and improve cellular functions, providing a fresh perspective on stress management in the context of functional medicine. The episode navigates through various strategies to harness stress positively, discussing practical methods like breathwork, exercise, and cold immersion therapy. By focusing on these energizing hormonal interventions, Drs. Woolner and Wells outline how patients can enhance their stress resilience, improve mitochondrial function, and ultimately foster better health outcomes. The podcast also critiques the traditional view of stress, proposing instead that the perception of stress plays a crucial role in its impact on health, as supported by the work of Dr. Kelly McGonigal and other prominent researchers. Key Takeaways: Stress is not inherently detrimental; the perception of stress can alter its impact on health significantly. Hormetic strategies, or calculated stressors, can build resilience and enhance cellular function. Breathwork, particularly hyperventilation techniques, serves as a simple yet powerful method for boosting mental and physical energy. Regular physical activity, tailored to individual preferences, significantly benefits mitochondrial health and stress resilience. The brain can be trained to manage stress effectively through consistent exposure to controlled stressors. Notable Quotes: "Stress is only bad for you if you think it's bad for you." - Dr. Andrew Wells "Our bodies are designed not just to handle stress but to actually thrive when exposed to the right types of stress." - Dr. Chad Woolner "Each time you step into a cold immersion barrel or exercise, you're training your body that you have way more control over the stress response." - Dr. Andrew Wells Resources: Book: The Upside of Stress by Dr. Kelly McGonigal - A pivotal resource referenced during the podcast conversation. Book: Dopamine Nation by Dr. Anna Lembke - Important insights on the balance of stress and pleasure. Book: Brain Energy by Dr. Chris Palmer - Discusses energy deficiency in relation to chronic health issues. Angela talks to the amazing Laura Hof, about the transformative power of cold exposure and the Wim Hof Method, exploring how these practices can enhance mental resilience and emotional regulation. Laura shares her extensive experience in guiding individuals through the challenges of cold exposure, emphasising its role as a metaphor for overcoming life's stressors, and highlights the physiological and psychological benefits of ice baths and breathing techniques, including improved stress response, emotional regulation, and even pain relief. “In the interview Laura references a 2024 study of 1114 women. The statistics are - The majority of women with symptoms swam specifically to reduce these symptoms (56.4% for period and 63.3% for perimenopause symptoms.) Of the women using cold water swimming to reduce their symptoms, 85.8% said it alleviated the symptoms due to mental benefits and 92.6% due to physical benefits of the cold as the reason for the reduction of symptoms “ KEY TAKEAWAYS Engaging in ice baths serves as a powerful metaphor for overcoming various stressors in life, helping individuals build resilience and confidence by training their stress response. The Wim Hof Method has been shown to improve emotional regulation, which is particularly beneficial for high-achieving women who often face increased stress and anxiety, especially during perimenopause. Practicing the Wim Hof breathing method can significantly reduce stress sensitivity and improve emotional regulation, making it a valuable tool for managing daily stressors and enhancing decision-making skills. The experience of cold exposure reveals how individuals handle stress in their daily lives. Learning to relax and accept the cold can lead to a stronger mind-body connection, promoting overall well-being. BEST MOMENTS "The ice bath becomes a metaphor for those things that are very hard to do in your life, but you are doing them, overcoming yourself." "When you learn to overcome yourself and that stress response in an ice bath, you literally train to deal with any stress that you have in your life." "Emotional regulation is one of the most important things for women to deal with, especially high achievers." "Doing the hard thing immediately in the morning sets you up for success for the whole day." Healing the Body: A Guided Meditation for Self-Healing

Your body is designed to heal. Science has proven that the mind and body are deeply connected, and through the power of breath, visualization, and intention, you can activate your body's natural healing abilities. In this guided meditation, you'll be led through a practice that combines imagination, breathwork, and intention—helping you align with your body's innate wisdom to restore balance and vitality. Many studies on the placebo effect have shown that belief alone can trigger real physiological healing. Your thoughts influence your biology, and by engaging in this meditation, you're not just relaxing—you're sending signals to your body to repair and regenerate. Whether you're recovering from an illness, feeling stress manifest in your body, or simply wanting to feel more vibrant, this meditation will help you create the inner environment for healing to occur. Beyond the Meditation: Practical Steps for Healing Breathwork for Nervous System Regulation Studies show that deep, slow breathing (such as coherent breathing at 5-6 breaths per minute) activates the vagus nerve, reducing inflammation and supporting healing. Try: Inhale for 5 seconds, exhale for 5 seconds for 5 minutes daily to shift into a parasympathetic (healing) state. Visualizing Your Cells Healing Research in psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) suggests that guided imagery can enhance immune response. Try: Before bed, picture your cells glowing with health, repairing, and renewing—your brain cannot distinguish between real and vividly imagined experiences. Grounding with Nature Studies on earthing (walking barefoot on the earth) show it reduces cortisol and inflammation. Try: Spend 15-30 minutes outside daily, barefoot if possible, to reduce stress and promote healing. Hydration & Structured Water Dr. Masaru Emoto's water studies suggest that intention influences water structure—and since we are mostly water, our thoughts affect our biology. Try: Drink a glass of water infused with intention, mentally affirming health and renewal before you sip. Cold Exposure for Cellular Repair Cold therapy activates brown fat, reduces inflammation, and boosts resilience (Wim Hof Method research). Try: End your shower with 30 seconds of cold water to stimulate circulation and healing. Journal Prompt for Reflection "If my body could speak to me right now, what would it say it needs?" Take a moment to tune in and write freely. Let your body's wisdom come through. You may receive unexpected insights. Final Thought: Healing is a journey of both science and belief. By combining breath, visualization, movement, and conscious intention, you can become an active participant in your own healing process. Let this meditation be the start of a new relationship with your body—one built on trust, gratitude, and the knowing that you are capable of deep transformation.
