Powdered wigs didn't win the American Revolution... scarred knuckles did. Host Ben Thompson is joined by David Schmidt, director of The American Revolution with Ken Burns, to tell the story of Daniel Morgan - a frontier brawler who survived 500 lashes, took a musket ball through the face, and learned to fight the British in ways they couldn't understand or stop. Morgan didn't look like a Founding Father and he didn't fight like a gentleman. He hunted officers from the treeline, turned militia panic into strategy, and delivered one of the most decisive victories of the war at Cowpens. This episode strips the American Revolution down to its rawest form:  mud, blood, rifle smoke, and a man with 499 reasons to never surrender.

Because we were created to be possessed. That word might sound unsettling because we often associate it with demonic possession, but in reality, God intended for us to be possessed by Him. Send us a textAfter the catastrophic defeat at Charleston, the Patriot forces were on the ropes.  General Clinton, commander of the British army, was so confident of the outcome, that he left his deputy, General Cornwallis, in charge and headed north.  Cornwallis planned to link up with Tory militias from North and South Carolina, to crush resistance, and to  remove two more stars  from the flag.  (The British already controlled Georgia, at least they thought they did).  The Tory militias, backed up by some regulars, had gathered at King's Mountain right on the border between North and South Carolina.  They were in a formidable position, holding the high ground.  The plan was to link up with Cornwallis, finish off the rebellion, and go home as heroes.  What could go wrong? But four battles (Musgrave Mill, Cowpens, King's Mountain, and Guilford Courthouse) changed the tragectory of the war. We have been watching the Ken Burns masterpiece on The American Revolution.  This story is told in the last episode.

You must decide to have the transplant. If you do, you will receive a brand new tender and responsive heart. It will not be a weak heart, but a powerful heart with a purpose! Without Christ, our hearts wander from thing to thing. We seek purpose and meaning in many places, but God offers a heart with meaning and purpose through Christ. Introduction We are talking about unity! Last week we talked about how important it was to work together. God has designed Christianity to be done with others and never intended it to be done alone. It is meant to be done together as a family, as a church, as a community, and as a nation of people who believe in Jesus! The absence of disagreements is not a testimony to the world—the testimony is the manner in which we deal with disagreements. Therefore, we need to maturely disagree! Scripture Reading Romans 14:1-13 – The Danger of Criticism Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don't argue with them about what they think is right or wrong…(Full passage: Romans 14:1-13) Main Points 1. Jesus is enough! Eternal life comes only through Jesus—not our convictions or deeds. Convictions, doctrines, and obedience matter, but they do not save us. Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ alone. Supporting Scripture: Luke 18 – The tax collector's prayer for mercy 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 – “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” 2. There are infinite things to disagree on! From food, to worship days, to doctrines, to personal convictions—even the color of the carpet! Disagreements are inevitable, but they should not divide us. Stand firm on the core truths of the Gospel, but show grace in non-essentials. Supporting Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:23-26 – “Don't get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights.” 3. The way we disagree should be a witness! A New York state appeals court on Thursday tossed out a massive monetary fine for civil business fraud imposed on president Donald Trump, his company, and other defendants related to the lawsuit by state attorney general Leticia James. Now let's go and remember what Leticia James said. And that is why I will be honored when I walk into that courtroom on October 2. Well, my role is civil, but I will come back before you soon with a check for $250,000,000. Yeah. The best we can do is zero. Sorry. Sorry, Leticia. No four what? I it got over 500 half a billion dollars in fines between her and and George George, George Ingeron. They overstated everything. Now remember, this was a, quote, unquote, crime that nobody said happened. There was no lending institution, no organization that accused Donald Trump of committing fraud. In fact, on every single transaction, there was always a disclaimer that these estimates are done and I'm paraphrasing here. These estimates are done using customary, accounting standards, basically saying, listen. This is the way we do things. If you don't agree with it, you do your own due diligence. But nobody did. Nobody wanted to because they were doing business with Donald Trump, and they wanted to do business with Donald Trump. So they did, and they were happy to do it and would do it again. Focus: The older brother's reaction and the importance of humility and joy. The Father celebrates the return of the lost son, but the older brother refuses to join. Scripture:Luke 15:11–32 Main Points: The Unfaithful Son Was Celebrated The younger son sinned, squandered his inheritance, and returned in brokenness. The Father (God) forgave and celebrated him—not because he deserved it, but because He could. Forgiveness and restoration are God's to give, not ours to withhold. We must not let our sense of justice override God's mercy. The Faithful Son Was Uncelebrated The older brother kept score and felt overlooked. Faithfulness doesn't always come with immediate recognition or reward. Our reward is eternal, not earthly. True humility accepts God's mercy for others, even when we don't understand it. Celebrate with Joy The older brother obeyed out of obligation, not joy. When our hearts align with God's, we celebrate what He celebrates. Spirit-filled living leads to joyful obedience, not resentment. A true child of God rejoices when the lost are found. Closing: Be humble. Rejoice when others return to the Father—because that is His will. Luke 15:31 – “Everything I have is yours.” God sees your faithfulness and will reward you in His time. This week: Even if the return isn't perfect, a win is still a win. Scripture:Luke 15:11–32 Main Points: Things Get Worse Before They Get Better The younger son dishonors his father, leaves home, and lives in sin. Sin leads to destruction and despair (Proverbs 14:12). God allows us to experience the consequences of our choices to bring us back. People Are Naturally Selfish—Even With God The son returns not out of love, but out of desperation. Many of us come to God for selfish reasons—but that's okay. Over time, love and relationship grow from that decision. A win is a win—even if it starts messy. The Father Doesn't Care—He Just Wants You Home The father runs to the son before he says a word. God celebrates our return, no matter how broken or selfish it may seem. Confession is still important (1 John 1:9)—saying it out loud brings healing and clarity. Closing: Pray for the win! Zephaniah 3:17–20: God rejoices over us and restores us. Jesus has already won—we share in His victory. It may not look perfect, but if someone returns to God, it's a win. Sermon Title: Prodigal Son – ReturningSeries: The Prodigal Son | Week 1Occasion: Father's Day Introduction: Launching a new series on the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32). The word “prodigal” originally meant “one who returns.” The father in the parable shows great faith by letting his son go, hoping he would return. Scripture:Luke 15:11–32 Main Points: Sin Brings Poor Decisions and Difficult Circumstances The younger son's request was selfish and dishonorable. He squandered his inheritance in wild living and ended up in desperation. Galatians 6:7–8 – We reap what we sow. Sin affects not only the sinner but also those around them. God Will Turn You Loose The father (representing God) allows the son to leave and make his own choices. God doesn't force anyone to stay—He honors our free will. Isaiah 53:6 – We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Sometimes people must be allowed to feel the weight of life without God. God Will Let You Taste What You Ask For The son had to experience the full consequences of his choices before he could return. God allows us to feel the emptiness of sin so we'll long for His presence. Heaven is not for those who reject God—it's for those who return to Him. Closing: If God can't bring them back, what makes you think you can? God wants us to come back. The story of the Prodigal Son is the story of all humanity—starting in Genesis 3. Don't be afraid to let go of someone you love. Trust that God is able to bring them back. Recap: Conflict is unavoidable, should be private (within reason), and we must remain faithful through it. Today's focus: God can use even evil or painful situations for good. Scripture: Acts 15:36–41 (Paul and Barnabas' sharp disagreement) Main Points: God Can Use Discouragement to Bring About Passion Paul and Barnabas' split led to the Gospel spreading in two directions. Personal testimony: God uses transitions and separations to expand His Kingdom. Psalm 119:71 – Suffering teaches us to pay attention to God's ways. Discouragement can fuel a deeper passion for doing what's right. God Can Use Division to Bring About Unity Though divided over John Mark, Paul and Barnabas remained united in Christ. Hebrews 12:14–15 – Work for peace and guard against bitterness. Healthy conflict, when handled biblically, can strengthen relationships and unity. God Can Use Failure to Bring About Restoration John Mark failed early but was later restored and became valuable to Paul. 2 Timothy 4:9–11 & Colossians 4:10 – Paul requests Mark's presence and affirms his ministry. Never write someone off—God can redeem and restore anyone. Closing: God can use anything—good or bad—for His glory and your growth. There was no clear “winner” in the conflict between Paul and Barnabas—both had valid perspectives. Let Jesus define you, not your conflict. Week two of dealing with conflict; encouragement to handle conflict well. James 1:2-3: Consider troubles as opportunities for growth. Scripture: Acts 15:36-41 Matthew 18:15-17 (Correcting Another Believer) Points: Don't try to win: Winning involves rules, audiences, and referees, making conflicts public. Winning can lead to resentment and is a worldly mentality. Philippians 2:3-4: Be humble and think of others as better than yourselves. Aim for peace, love, and restoration instead of winning. Don't pick sides: Avoid being dragged into others’ conflicts as a referee or audience. Encourage private resolution first, as per Matthew 18:15-17. If needed, involve 1-2 unbiased, mature believers to help resolve the issue. 1 Corinthians 1:10: Live in harmony and avoid divisions. Don't get distracted: Conflict is not the most important thing; focus on the mission and calling. Paul and Barnabas disagreed but continued their ministry separately. Understand that sometimes moving past unresolved conflict is necessary for the greater mission. Closing: Luke 17:3-4: Forgive repeatedly if there is repentance. Serious conflicts need resolution; follow Matthew 18:15-17. Aim for peace, unity, and forgiveness. This month, we focus on conflict through a passage in Acts. Conflict can arise unexpectedly and must be handled appropriately. Scripture: Acts 15:36-41 Points: Relationships are prone to conflict: Close relationships have more opportunities for conflict. Paul and Barnabas were close friends and ministry partners. Colossians 3:13-15: Make allowance for each other's faults and forgive. Conflict can arise out of nowhere: John Mark’s abandonment became an issue years later. Christians must prepare to deal with conflict. James 1:19-20: Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Even Christians will disagree: Paul and Barnabas, respected leaders, had a sharp disagreement. Conflict is common among Christians, even in church settings. James 3:17: Wisdom from above is peace-loving and gentle. Closing: Proverbs 15:1, Proverbs 12:18: Respond with gentle and wise words. Conflict is inevitable; be prepared to respond appropriately. How you handle conflict can be a powerful witness of your relationship with Christ. Over 2,400 scriptures pertain to Jesus’ second coming, more than His first. Living in a way that reflects readiness for Jesus’ return. There will be punishments and rewards: Heaven isn’t communist; there will be varying punishments and rewards. Punishments for those who know and refuse, and lighter punishments for those who don’t know. Rewards for those who are ready, including greater responsibilities and Jesus serving them. Jesus has expectations for you: Much will be required from those given much. Salvation should lead to a transformed life with purpose and calling. Living a Christian life should be impactful and fulfilling. Closing: Luke 17:22-24, 31: The return of Jesus will be unexpected, and we must be prepared. Join us for “What a King Should Be,” the third message in our series, “The Coming of a King.” We’re exploring the timeless question: are we seeking the King God intended, or one of our own making? Today, we tackle a fundamental question that echoes through history and into our own lives: What kind of King do we truly desire, and are we willing to accept the King that God has provided? From the Israelites demanding a king “like the nations” to the Palm Sunday crowds seeking a political savior, the human tendency is to define God’s King on our terms. Drawing heavily from Hebrews 10:1-19, we examine the limitations of the old covenant sacrifices – a system that could only remind people of their sins without offering true cleansing. We see the contrast with the perfect sacrifice of Jesus, who came to do God’s will and provide a permanent solution for sin and separation from God. In this message, we explore three key points: Abandon what's not working! (Hebrews 10:1-4) – Recognizing the futility of temporary fixes and cycles of guilt. What is God's will? (Hebrews 10:5-14) – Understanding that God’s ultimate desire is for our holiness through the finished work of Christ. Our King fixes things! (John 3:17, Hebrews 10:16-19) – Embracing the truth that Jesus came to save and make all things right, writing God’s law on our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is the King who serves, who sacrificed, and whose kingdom is eternal and perfect. He is exactly what a King should be. The call today is to surrender to Him not just as Savior, but as King, embracing the journey of holiness and confident relationship with God that His sacrifice makes possible. This week we'll be talking with Andrew Waters about his latest book, Backcountry War: The Rise of Francis Marion, Banastre Tarleton, and Thomas Sumter (2024, Westholme Publishing). In it Andrew weaves the history of three key leaders in the American Revolution into in a single narrative, focusing on the events of 1780 in South Carolina that witnessed their collective ascendance from common soldiers to American legends. It was a time when British victories at Charleston and Camden left the Continental Army in tatters and the entire American South vulnerable to British conquest. Yet in those dark hours, Sumter, Marion, and others like them rose in the swamps and hills of the South Carolina wilderness. Their collective efforts led to the stunning American victory at Cowpens and a stalemate at Guilford's Courthouse the following year that finally convinced British general Charles Cornwallis to abandon the Carolinas for Virginia and eventually to Yorktown where his beleaguered army surrendered.
