"Do nothing for us without us." According to today's guest Robyn Bussey, that operating principle is the basis for effective community health work. "You don't go into a community and dictate. You go and listen and trust and be a partner," she adds. As you'll learn in this enlightening conversation, Bussey is following that approach in her current work as Just Health Director at the Partnership for Southern Equity, an Atlanta-based nonprofit advancing racial equity and shared prosperity across the South.  On this episode of Raise the Line from Elsevier, Bussey provides illuminating  examples of community-rooted work in South Fulton County and rural Georgia, and explains why community health workers may be the most underutilized asset in addressing health disparities. This wide-ranging interview with host Michael Carrese also explores: Bussey's candid perspective on what happened to the surge of interest in health equity that occurred during COVID; Why life expectancy gains in many Southern states have lagged behind the rest of the country; Her advice to students and early-career clinicians about where they're needed most.   Mentioned in this episode:  Partnership for Southern Equity If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. Today on Uncommon Sense, we're discussing the tragic state of the modern world. From the protests in Ireland to growing frustration across Western nations, many people feel as though their voices are no longer being heard by the institutions that claim to represent them. I'll share why I support the right of people to protest and why I believe the demonstrations in Ireland have resonated with so many people around the world. We'll also discuss what I see as a deeper spiritual crisis affecting modern society. Many of the political, cultural, and social problems we face today are symptoms of a broader moral and spiritual decline, one that cannot be solved through politics alone. In this episode:My thoughts on the protests in IrelandWhy so many citizens now feel disconnected from their governmentsThe growing divide between ordinary people and powerful institutionsThe role of faith, morality, and personal responsibility in rebuilding societyWhy I believe many of today's crises point to a deeper spiritual battleWhether you agree or disagree, this episode is an invitation to think critically about the direction of our culture, our governments, and our future.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app

As concerns escalate about the deadly Ebola virus outbreak in Africa, we bring you the unique insights of Dr. Peter Piot, a renowned microbiologist who co-discovered the virus 50 years ago during the first recorded outbreak of the disease. His on-the-ground account of that crisis was provided to us in April before the current outbreak was declared, but it contains valuable historical perspective and shares lessons learned that he carried forward in his consequential career.  “What I saw from the beginning is the most important thing is to listen to people and that you need to act fast to save lives, before you have the evidence you would like to have.”    He followed his contributions on Ebola by diving into the fight against HIV/AIDS, eventually reshaping global response in leadership roles at the World Health Organization and United Nations. As he shares with host Lindsey Smith, the learnings in that case were more pragmatic than scientific. “We had to redefine HIV/AIDS not as a medical problem but as an economic and security problem in order to get it on the political agenda.”  Tune in for a fascinating episode that takes you from the gritty frontlines of public health crises to the battles for funding and attention in the halls of power as Dr. Piot shares what it actually takes to move the world to respond effectively to health threats. Farmer & CEO Zara Lowien: How does government policy making and decisions affect community wellbeing

My big questions today is: What happens to the mental health and wellbeing of whole rural communities when governments make decisions that negatively impact them?High-quality government support acts as a buffer by fostering institutional trust and interpersonal trust, which in turn reduces mental distress. Conversely, when citizens perceive government interventions as inadequate in managing economic or social uncertainty, their trust plummets, leading to a marked deterioration in mental health. When governments and powerful institutions fail to protect people, deny reality, or cover up wrongdoing to protect their own reputations, it results in "institutional betrayal". When these patterns continue over time, the effects compound. We start to see:1. Declining trust People lose confidence in institutions, which affects everything from healthcare to elections – 2. Social fragmentation Communities become divided, often along ideological lines.3. Increased susceptibility to conspiracy thinking When official narratives are inconsistent, alternative explanations become more appealing.4. Learned helplessness People feel that nothing they do will change outcomes, so they disengage. This doesn't just affect individuals—it weakens the functioning of society as a whole. In this podcast, we're joined by Zara Lowien, Chief Executive Officer of the National Irrigators' Council—an organisation at the forefront of one of Australia's most important and often complex conversations: water. About how she sees the extraction of water from rural communities affecting the very fabric of those communities and the mental health and wellbeing.Zara brings a wealth of experience in public policy, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, working at the intersection of government decision-making and the real-world needs of rural and regional communities. In her role as CEO, she helps guide the national voice of irrigators—supporting farmers and industries that quite literally help feed and clothe Australia, and millions more around the world. Her leadership comes at a time when water policy is under increasing pressure—from climate variability, competing environmental and agricultural priorities, and the ongoing evolution of frameworks like those shaping the Murray–Darling Basin. Under her leadership, the National Irrigators' Council continues to play a critical role in shaping national conversations around water reform, climate policy, and the long-term resilience of irrigated agriculture. We talk not just about policy, but about people—about what's at stake for rural communities, and how leadership, collaboration, and innovation can help secure a strong future for Australia's irrigation sector.#theruralpsychologist #mentalhealth #ruralmentalhealth

Shownotes The forever costs of America's war on Iran could disfigure economic life for generations to come, around the world and in the United States. In an earlier era, war spending helped pull the United States out of the Great Depression by pulling unemployed farmers into the cities and retraining them for manufacturing. Even through the Cold War, many Americans viewed war spending as a major driver of high-quality manufacturing jobs and consumer well-being. The war economy since 9/11 has been different. The wars themselves drive antidemocratic currents and undermine well-being even for people, like most Americans, who are far from the battlefields. These wars also undermine economic life in less obvious ways, like incentivizing endless private sector investment in defense rather than more productive industries. Eamon Kircher-Allen joins Order from Ashes to explain the profound distortions of the modern American war economy. Inflation and a possible recession are only the most immediate economic costs of the Iran war. As the forever wars after 9/11 proved, runaway war spending disfigures every aspect of the economy. The true long-term costs of this war will be much higher than the price of military operations. In this fascinating conversation with Raise the Line host Lindsey Smith, Crockett also highlights how AI enables tutoring-like interactions with students which supports deeper reasoning rather than rote memorization. That in turn, helps Elsevier achieve the goal of getting students ready to practice medicine, not just ready to take tests. In addition, limiting the AI's sources to the evidence-based material in the Osmosis and Elsevier content libraries provides both students and faculty with the level of trust and verifiability they desire. Tune in to learn how this meaningful shift from static content delivery to dynamic, data-informed learning experiences is changing healthcare education. Government Policy Moves Vendor Choice from Preference to Proof for MSPs

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2026 11:42

The structural mechanism highlighted in this episode is the shift of government policy from serving as a regulatory guardrail to acting as a direct steering function in technology selection, shifting liability boundaries and procurement decisions onto MSPs and their contracts. Federal agencies, including the FCC and the White House, are no longer just prescribing security outcomes but are increasingly specifying acceptable inputs such as specific routers, AI contract terms, and cloud platforms, converting technology choices into explicit compliance obligations. A consequential development supporting this shift is the FCC's move to ban imports of consumer-grade routers manufactured outside the United States, a policy change that directly impacts not only residential but also business environments such as home offices and smaller hybrid setups. Additionally, the White House's push for a unified national AI governance framework, rather than a patchwork of state-based rules, further codifies what vendors and MSPs must document and justify in both procurement and ongoing service delivery. Contractual requirements—such as the GSA's draft AI clause—are moving compliance from best practice guidance to enforceable terms, influencing which vendors can bid for federal contracts and what they must attest to regarding AI-enabled services. Related stories underscore the tightening of enforcement through procurement and certification gates. The transcript cites the FedRAMP system as an example, where conditional approvals and review backlogs highlight operational challenges and reinforce how authorization is less about technical sufficiency and more about meeting buyer and audit expectations. The trend toward requiring supply chain and AI attestations by default in master service agreements is consolidating vendor choice around those that can produce defensible documentation, while increasing burdens for those unable to do so. For MSPs and IT providers, the practical implications are increased operational complexity and contract risk. Vendor selection now carries liability exposure that extends beyond technical performance to proving decisions in audits, insurance reviews, and contract disputes. Maintaining evidence-ready reports for backup, recovery, and AI governance is no longer optional, as the inability to produce such proof can result in being excluded from regulated verticals. The expected tradeoff is a consolidation of vendors and solutions, weighted toward those who offer prepackaged compliance and attestation capabilities, but with an accompanying risk of over-dependence and concentration. 00:00 Contract Conditions 02:53 Gates, Not Laws 04:34 Compliance Consolidates 07:30 Why Do We Care?  Supported by:  ScalePad  Nerdio

“Every person deserves kindness, dignity, and respect, regardless of what their medical situation is,” says Madison Donnelly, PA-C, who joins host Dr. Parsa Mohri on the latest installment of our NextGen Journeys series. As you'll hear in this thoughtful conversation, Madison is bringing that commitment to patient advocacy and equitable care to her patients at Community Care Physicians in Albany, New York. A graduate of Hofstra University's PA program, Madison describes how the profession's flexibility and team-based approach enables clinicians to expand access to care, particularly in high-demand specialties like women's health and primary care. Drawing on her work in obstetrics and gynecology, she highlights persistent gaps in women's health, including America's troubling maternal mortality rates and the long delays many patients face in receiving diagnoses for endometriosis and other conditions. “There's a difference between telling someone something and being heard,” she notes, emphasizing that women's symptoms are still too often dismissed in clinical settings. The episode also explores overlooked populations -- including NICU families and patients with eating disorders -- where stigma, mental health challenges, and fragmented follow-up care can leave people vulnerable long after the initial medical crisis. Don't miss this Raise the Line dialogue about the evolving role of physician associates and how early-career clinicians can help build a more humane and responsive system. Dr. Alexander also believes these relationships can be leveraged to help people sort out facts from misleading or inaccurate claims. “I strongly recommend shifting our focus from combating misinformation head on, and instead working with the communities who we are seeking to serve.” This fascinating look at communication science also covers: How stories drive belief; The importance of working with community partners who are trusted messengers;  The power of audience segmentation. We have a special episode of Raise the Line on tap today featuring the debut of host Dr. Parsa Mohri, who will now be leading our NextGen Journeys series that highlights the fresh perspectives of learners and early career healthcare professionals around the world on education, medicine, and the future of care. Parsa was himself a NextGen guest in 2024 as a medical student at Acibadem University in Turkey. He's now a general physician working in the Adult Palliative Care Department at Şişli Etfal Research and Training Hospital in Istanbul.  Luckily for us, he's also continuing in his role as a Regional Lead for the Osmosis Health Leadership Initiative (OHLI). For his first guest, Parsa reached out to a former colleague in the Osmosis family, Negeen Farsio, who worked with him as a member of OHLI's predecessor organization, the Osmosis Medical Education Fellowship. Negeen is now a graduate student in medical anthropology at Brunel University of London, a degree which she hopes will inform her future work as a clinician. “Medical anthropology is a field that looks at healthcare systems and how human culture shapes the way we view different illnesses, diseases, and treatments and helps you to see the full picture of each patient.” You are sure to enjoy this heartfelt conversation on how Negeen's lived experience as a patient and caregiver have shaped her commitment to mental health and patient advocacy, and how she hopes to marry humanity with medicine in a world that yearns to heal.
