In a time marked by anxiety, division and disconnection, the path forward lies not in fixing the past but in expanding our freedom to imagine what's next. In this episode of Learning Through Experience, Dr. Heidi Brooks is joined by Suzi Tucker, a writer, teacher and pioneer of Family Constellations work. Together, they explore how our personal and ancestral stories shape the patterns we repeat—and how stepping into those patterns with curiosity can help us reorient toward hope. With warmth, wisdom and respect for the unknown, Suzi shares how facing uncertainty isn't about certainty at all—it's about accompaniment. It's about standing on the shoulders of those who came before us and choosing, even in fear, to take one generative step toward something more. Through stories of lineage, loss, and liberation, Heidi and Suzi offer listeners an invitation to slow down, pay attention and let learning emerge. “When I plant a seed, that's really all I have to do. I don't know what's going to come. That one generative step is enough.” —Suzi Tucker Learning Through Experience is produced through the Yale School of Management. Show Notes & Key Moments 03:00 – A Brother Remembered, a Path Revealed Suzi recalls how the absence of her institutionalized brother shaped her and how an encounter with Bert Hellinger—founder of Family Constellations—marked a turning point. “I decided I had a freedom my mother didn't have, and I used it. I went to meet my brother—not for him to know me, but for me to know him.” 10:16 – The Work of Freedom vs. HealingSuzi explains that her work isn't about fixing the past—it's about freeing people to move forward. “Healing is personal and beautiful, but not necessarily connected to something in the future. Freedom is.” 13:36 – Patterns, Habit and the Energy of StucknessHeidi and Suzi discuss how we get trapped in cycles inherited from our family systems—and how awareness opens space for choice. “Those places where I've done the same thing over and over again—and then I defend it, and get angry at the defense—that's when spirit gets siphoned off.” 18:00 – Group Work, Lineage and AccompanimentSuzi reflects on what emerges in her constellation workshops—and why showing up in community can be a pathway to hope. “When I look at a group of 40, I see 4 million. I'm working not just with people, but with the lineages sitting beside them.” 24:45 – Facing Uncertainty with Ancestral SupportSuzi names the emotional reality of living in uncertain times and how drawing from lineage can be a grounding force. “I call it the lethargy of despair. But then I feel my predecessors stepping in and saying, we've seen this before.” 27:29 – Writing as a Practice of PossibilityFor Suzi, writing becomes a tool to move beyond fear and uncertainty. “I'm writing my path beyond the threshold of fear.” 43:23 – Constellations and a Shift in PerspectiveConstellations offer a way to step outside the chaos and view one's story with new eyes. Heidi and Suzi discuss why representing others in a group can be transformative. “It's not about understanding the system, but knowing there is a system—and it looks different depending on where you stand.” 48:22 – Generative Endings and Ongoing UnfoldingSuzi explains that constellations don't end with solutions, but with new images that change the structure of how people move through life. “I picture my parents behind me, my brother beside me, and I walk forward. And I imagine them saying, We're so glad they didn't stay trapped in our fear.” 53:55 – Something to Sit WithHeidi closes by highlighting the invitation at the heart of this episode: not to solve uncertainty, but to meet it. “Fear is familiar. Possibility is harder to trust—but it's there. And we can take one generative step toward it.” Resources Suzi Tucker's website: Explore Suzi Tucker's website to learn about her upcoming retreats, workshops, and sign up for her newsletter. ‘Til Soon: Paradigm-shifting life prompts through the unique lens of Systemic Constellations, by Suzi Tucker. Through real-life examples and practical reflections, he explores how acknowledging hidden entanglements can unlock the path to personal and generational healing. Episode 478 features and interview with astrologer Jason Holley about Experiential Astrology, which is a dynamic approach that attempts to embody the symbols of astrology through creative and interactive methods, including making the chart come alive by acting it out in a group setting with Astrodrama. Experiential astrology has its origins in some of the experimentation with different psychological methods that were happening in the astrological community in the 1970s and 80s, and Jason highlights the work of astrologer Barbara Schermer in particular. Jason defines Experiential Astrology as engaging with astrological symbolism through multiple intelligences and perceptual faculties, including somatic, sensuous, imagistic, instinctual, kinesthetic, expressive, and relational. This approach emphasizes the full-consciousness experience of astrological symbolism, moving beyond conceptual understanding to a felt, lived experience. In the discussion we focused on one particular application of Experiential Astrology known as Astrodrama, which involves a group of people standing around and acting out a person's birth chart, and we discuss some of the different ways that this can be done. Today, I am delighted to welcome Nidhi Pandya, an Ayurvedic doctor and the author of the soon-to-be-released book Your Body Already Knows, to explore the interconnection between Ayurveda, yoga, and mindful living. In this insightful episode, Nidhi dives into her journey of growing up immersed in ancient Ayurvedic traditions. She shares the profound wisdom of those principles and explains how she has woven them into her personal and professional life. Join us for Nidhi's heartfelt stories and actionable insights highlighting the relevance of Ayurveda in modern-day life.Early Immersion in AyurvedaNidhi grew up in a large family in India, where Ayurveda was an intrinsic part of life, taught through rhythms and logic rather than explicit instructions. Her grandfather, an Ayurvedic healer, influenced her upbringing, and she learned to observe subtle connections between body, mind, and environment. That foundation sparked her curiosity about human behavior and health.Formal Training and Unique Education PathIn her early twenties, she moved to the U.S. and pursued formal Ayurvedic education despite the skepticism of her family. She studied at a rare Gurukul-style institution that offered intensive classes led by top educators from Pune's Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalay. That rigorous, classical training complemented her experience of Ayurveda and shaped her understanding of the science.Transition to Empowering PracticeAfter initially practicing Ayurveda in a prescriptive manner and becoming disillusioned with the dependency it created among her clients, she transitioned to teaching principles of self-evaluation and empowerment, helping people to integrate Ayurvedic practices into their lives sustainably.Ayurveda Across Life Stages and ContextsAyurvedic practices shift with age and lifestyle demands. Regardless of the external circumstances, everyone faces internal battles, which Ayurveda can help address. Nidhi encourages integrating small, meaningful daily practices to prevent individuals from carrying their unresolved stress into the future.Ayurveda for Modern LifeWhile preventative care may dominate in younger years, repair becomes more critical with age. Nidhi advises everyone to create a sanctuary of peace regardless of their living environment.Group Work and the Power of CommunityNidhi works primarily with women in group settings. She highlights the unique challenges women face globally and believes that when women heal, it creates a ripple effect that has the potential to create widespread healing. Common Challenges Women FaceNidhi identifies burnout, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, and insomnia as the most prevalent challenges most women worldwide face. She highlights how societal pressures tend to force women to sacrifice parts of themselves, leading to emotional and physical strain. Her work addresses those imbalances by helping women embrace all aspects of their identities without striving for perfection.Reaching Millennials Through AyurvedaHer work naturally resonates with Millennials. Nidhi designed her approach to empower individuals by teaching logical connections between body and environment, emphasizing self-trust and practical experimentation rather than prescribing rigid solutions. The Concept of Inner ClimateNidhi introduced the concept of the inner climate to simplify Ayurvedic principles. She explains that just as the climate on Earth supports life, the body thrives when its warm and moist internal environment is balanced and aligns with the ideal conditions for microbiota, digestion, and overall health. Deviations from that balance lead to physical and emotional imbalances.Modern Imbalances...

If there's one thing you're certain to encounter in college, it's group projects. Some students love the collaboration, while others dread the challenge of coordinating and communicating with classmates. And while many might warn you to prepare yourself for uneven workloads, unclear expectations, and endless group chat notifications, it's not all bad.Group projects don't have to feel like a chore. In fact, they can actually create opportunities to learn essential skills, such as collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving. The secret to success lies in preparation, communication, and strategic planning. With the right approach, group work can be a rewarding experience for everyone involved – and a chance to deliver results that are better than what you might have achieved on your own.
Group work is often an obsession for teachers and other stakeholders. The truth is, like any other instructional strategy, if it is not used with appropriate learning objectives in mind, the lesson will be more likely to miss the mark. Effective educators know that we have to be intentional. When used appropriately, group work can lead to powerful outcomes.

He has published ten books and numerous articles, earning recognition as a top-cited researcher by Stanford University. Before we dive in, we have a new cohort of veterans starting The Mission After mentorship program. Head over to themissionafter.org to join the waitlist and join us this July for a 90 day program that will help you establish a solid foundation for your identity, relationships, and of course discover your next mission and execute. SummaryDr. Rich Tedeschi discusses the concept of post-traumatic growth, which is the ability to turn traumatic experiences into something positive and transformative. He explains that post-traumatic growth has been written about and experienced throughout history, but it is not widely recognized in the field of mental health. The conversation also touches on the limitations of diagnostic labels and the importance of focusing on wellness and prevention in mental health. Dr. Tedeschi describes the work of Boulder Crest Foundation, which provides programs for veterans and first responders to promote post-traumatic growth. The conversation explores the challenges faced by veterans transitioning back to civilian life and the importance of post-traumatic growth. It emphasizes the need for connection, purpose, and belonging, and the difficulty of navigating a new way of being after leaving the military. The use of peer support and group work is discussed as a powerful tool for healing and growth. The scalability of mental health services and the role of psychiatric medications are also touched upon.TakeawaysPost-traumatic growth is the ability to turn traumatic experiences into something positive and transformative. The concept of post-traumatic growth has been written about and experienced throughout history, but it is not widely recognized in the field of mental health.Diagnostic labels in mental health focus on problems and disorders, but there is more to people's lives than just these labels. There is a shift towards focusing on wellness and prevention in mental health.Boulder Crest Foundation provides programs for veterans and first responders to promote post-traumatic growth. Cultures are dynamic and powerful forces that shape our identities and influence our perspectives on the world. They serve as bridges, effortlessly connecting the depth of our heritage with the construction of our futures. But for Asian Americans, the balance between traditional values and modern ideals poses a distinct challenge as they strive to find their place within society.Between visibility and invisibility, the pervasive presence of racism, the necessity for adaptation, and the negotiation between individuality and community… The Asian American experience is as complex as it is resilient. Today's guest embodies this truth in more ways than one. Kris Yi, Ph.D., Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with more than 25 years of clinical experience. In today's episode, Kris invites us to step into her world. She illustrates her journey from South Korea to the United States, sharing the challenges of migration, the enduring impact of cultural trauma, and the art of finding the balance between two distinct cultures. Determined to break free from bias, Kris lends her voice to the Art of Listening, to offer a fresh and often overlooked perspective that defies stereotypes.Join us as Kris boldly rewrites the narrative of the Asian American experience, carving out a unique space within the realm of psychoanalysis.Chapters1 - Juggling Korean and American cultures (4:22)2 - Anti-Asian racism and the Model Minority myth (10:41)3 - Kris's experiences with Discrimination and Hypersexualisation (17:14)4 - Historical racism in Psychoanalysis (22:41)5 - Bringing new visibility to the Asian Perspective (26:08)LinksKris YiKris' Journal on the Asian Perspective in PsychoanalysisEileen DunnMore from ‘The Art of Listening'
